A Grumpy Troll and A Prince
Chapter 3: The Adventure Begins
Tags: Comedy, action, adventure, and romance
With the kingdom safely hidden, prince Four set off to rescue his friends with the utmost confidence he would make it to Bergen Town on his own. That was until he was face to face with the cunning Mr Puzzles. He tried to fight back, but his head got ripped off and the remaining corpse laid dead on the ground. He failed. He had...
"Snap out of it Four!"
He backed out of the intrusive thoughts that had put him in a trance and looked down at his journal, filled with memes. The scenarios that played in his head were all that filled the page. Back in reality, he was following the footsteps of those dusty, respectable-like shoes that the TV man was wearing.
"I totally got this. It's not like he is taking your friends to their impending doom where they will all be eaten..." He nervously told himself, trying to hope for the best. No, that was exactly Mr Puzzles was doing...and he knew it. Taking a breath, the troll forced himself to carry along and make it all the way in one piece.
"I really hope I can do it because they're all depending on me."
He had just left the Mushroom Kingdom and was now standing on the flower petal that looked over and colorful field of the Flower Kingdom.
"I know that I must leave the only home I've ever known and brave the dangers of the forest, saving them before they're eaten. I mean how hard can that-"
He then heard a snapping sound and looked down to find the petal he was standing on had broke.
"Be..."
He was falling to the ground, but caught himself just in time. Once his feet were safely back on the ground, he dusted himself off and thought it might help to look at the more positive side of things.
"There's a sunny sky that's shiny and blue."
A butterfly flew past him and thought that maybe this journey wouldn't be as scary as he thought. That idea was thrown out the window when some kind of spotted, four-legged creature caught the bug with its tongue, a clear, speckled one ate him, buzzards flew past, eating skin, leaving nothing but bones, and then a fire flower burned it to ashes. Four was left standing with his mouth agape when the flower turned to him. He waved nervously when the flower asked "I wonder what Gombas taste like?" Four thought "What the actual heck..." and slowly backed away.
"It's gonna be a fantastic day..."
He made it to the Koopa kingdom where volcanos were puffing everywhere and he bounced along rocks under a river of lava.
"Such marvelousness this is gonna bring. Iv'e got so many songs that I wanna sing. And I'm ready to take on anything. Yippee!"
He got launched so hard that he made it up to a castle, but a giant turtle stomped in front of him. Bowser was certainly not happy as he started to chase the poor troll. He couldn't give up as he kept running and running, jumping off a ledge just before Bowser's fire breath roasted him to a crisp.
"So many fun surprises around each corner. Just ride along a rainbow, gonna be okay. Hey! I'm not giving up today. There's nothing getting in my way and if you knock, knock me over, I will get back up again."
He couldn't tell which kingdom he was falling into next, but then saw a giant bird heading his way. Trying to duck out of the way just made him get eaten in one fell swoop and the Cookatiel took him back to her soup bowl in the Luncheon Kingdom.
"If something goes a little wrong well you can go ahead and bring it on."
The Cookatiel spat him back out into the soup bowl, water bubbling until Four popped out, gasping for air.
"Because if you knock, knock me over, I will get back up again!"
He managed to escape the bird on a piece of carrot and felt relived watching the furious bird over the boiling pot of stew. Whatever kingdom next would surely be better, that is until he saw a bunch of spikes up ahead.
"Oh crap..."
He was marching through the rainy New Donk City, overheated in the Sand Kingdom, almost a block of ice in the Snow Kingdom, swimming through the Lake Kingdom till that giant eel swallowed him, now traveling through his intestines, and pushing through the Windy Kingdom.
"I'm marching along, iv'e got confidence, I'm cooler than a pack of peppermints, and I haven't been this excited since...I CAN'T REMEMBER WHEN!"
He began stomping and jumping along flying Koopa's until when they ran out, he found he was high up in the air, falling once again. (Is this a habit of his?)
"I'm off on this remarkable adventure. Just ridding along a rainbow!"
He opened his eyes to find a piranha plant, shutting it's mouth tightly. God that hurt. Was he..
"What if this is all a big mistake? What if it's more than I can take?"
"NO!"
He pried open the piranha plant and kept going. As long as he reminded himself of his friends, he would surely still stand.
"I can't think that way because I know that I'm really going to be-"
Till a chain chomp came out of nowhere and ate him. Going out by that retractable dog was not how he wanted to go.
"Okay! Hey! I'm not giving up today. There's nothing getting in my way because if you knock, knock me over, I will get back up again."
He managed to escape the jags of teeth in its mouth, wondering why so many thing wanted to eat him. Even the place he was searching for was filled with creatures, ready to get their hands on him.
"If something goes a little wrong, well you can go ahead and bring it on. Because if you knock, knock me over, I will get back up again."
He tore through several giant spider webs and collapsed on the ground, stuck in webbing. No problem. Just got to get out of this web.
"And if you knock, knock me over, I will....get....back......up.....again......."
What was wrong? His spirit was still persistent on going, but his body was giving up. He could feel his heartbeat slowly decrease and his eyes closing. No. Not now. You can't give up now. He soon passed out and everything went black.
...
Hours had passed, but someone had finally found him. Four eyes had caught sight of the poor troll. It turns out that a bunch os spiders had found their next meal and slowly descended from their webs to feast on what they saw as food. They opened their mouths wide, ready to take a bite when all of a sudden, someone grabbed Four just in the knick of time. The spiders turned to find that what you might think would be the least expected troll to come. That's right. Three had saved the prince, but the spiders didn't care. More food for them anyway.
They started to crawl towards him as he backed up, but then Three took out a bomb and tossed it at one's face. The explosion barely startled them as they paused for a few seconds...and then got back to dinner. Uneasiness began to take hold of Three, but he stood his ground and as it turns out, he had the same kinds of abilities with his hair that Four did.
Using his hair like a whip, he sent the spiders packing back into the mouth of some creature that swallowed them up and went to rest. He breathed a heavy sigh and finally it was quiet. Quiet? He looked back to see that the prince was still passed out, not making a sound. That wasn't normal for him. Three became panicked as he rushed over to the blacked out troll.
"FOUR!?"
He kneeled down to the spider web that encased him and leaned close for any signs of life. No heartbeat. "Hang on Four!" He grabbed a sharp petal from a Spider Mum flower (yes I googled that) and two glowing bugs. He used the flower petal to cut open the web containment and rubbed the two bugs together like AED to restore the prince's heartbeat.
Concern was expressed in his eyes as he hoped he wasn't too late. Four's eyes shot open as he sat up. He saw Three standing next to him and his expression turned more smug. "Three! You are right on time!" Three went back from his strange, caring side into his immodest, grumpy self. "Oh sure...Like you knew I was coming." Four actually did know he was coming because he had set him up. "Yep. I figured after the third hug time, you'd realize being eaten by a Bergen wouldn't be so bad."
Three shot back "And I figured there was no way you could do this by yourself. Looks like we were both right." He returned the smug grin and crossed his arms while Four just dismissed it and carried on. "Okay then onward!" He started walking off and Three ran after him. "Oi! Don't ignore me!"
"Sooner we can rescue everybody and make it home safely." Three pushed through some plants and asked "Wait! What's your plan?" Four turned back to him and gave him a look that said "We're you even listening."
"I just told you. To rescue everyone and make it home safely." Three sighed and told him "That's not a plan. That's a wishlist."
"OHHHH I suppose you have a plan."
Three nodded and cleared his throat before speaking. "First, we'll get to the edge of Bergen Town without being spotted. Then, we get inside by sneaking through the old escape tunnels which will then lead us to the Troll Tree, right before we get caught, AND SUFFER A MISERABLE DEATH AT THE HANDS OF A HORRIBLE, BLOODTHIRSTY BERGEN!" Three was just trying to scare Four into reconsidering, but it didn't work because what he saw next was...
"Hold on a second! Are you memeing my plan!" Four enthusiastically nodded as he held up a meme that had them and all of their friends cheering "We did it!" and dancing along to that cringey Dora song. Once again, glitter got shot into Three's unimpressed face. He scowled at Four and said "There will be no more...memes..." Four sighed sadly and the two continued on.
They began walking along a huge tree trunk that had conveniently fallen on top of a river, making it the perfect bridge to get across. Four tried to lighten the mood by dancing and humming along the trunk. Three did not appreciate it though.
"Do you have to do that?"
"I always dance and hum when I'm in a good mood."
"Do you have to be in a good mood?"
"Why wouldn't I be? By this time tomorrow, I'll be back with all my friends!"
He pondered to himself on how they were doing and said "I wonder what they're doing right now!" Three thew some sarcasm into his answer with by replying "Probably being digested." Four looked at him seriously and strictly told him "They're alive. I know it." Three then stopped in his tracks and faced Four coldly.
"You don't know anything Four. And I can't wait to see the look on your face when you realize that the world isn't all fun and laughter, cause it isn't! Bad things happen and their's nothing you can do about it!" He pouted to himself and walked off.
Four could tell something was up with Three, but pushed it aside for not being shown up like that. "Hey! I know that it isn't all fun and laughter, but I would rather go through my life thinking that it mostly is instead of being like you. You don't sing, dance, and so grumpy all the time. Seriously, what happened to you? Three didn't want to talk about it so he stuck a finger over the prince's mouth and shushed him.
Concern started to melt into Four's mind as he squeaked out "A Bergen?" Three slowly removed his finger and whispered "Maybe..." Four looked around in fear, but then squinted his eyes. He sighed and said "There's no Bergen is there.? You just said that so I would stop talking!"
"Yeah. And?" He continued walking as Four rolled his eyes. They realized it was getting late, so it seemed like a good idea to find a spot to camp and resume the journey in the morning. They had found a quiet spot in the forest to sleep, except they weren't sleeping. Three was angrily covering himself in the covers while Four was unable to sleep.
He took out a picture of all of them together and lied it in the grass in front of him. "They're all so special. Good night Meggy. Good night Boopkins. Good night Tari. Good night Melony. Good night Mario. Good night Bob. Good night Luigi." He chuckled a bit on the last one with a smile and playfully said "Good night Tag6. Boop." as he laid his finger on Tag6's nose in the picture.
"AND GOOD NIGHT FOUR." Three sternly said, wanting sleep. Four sighed and looked up at the start night sky with the full moon out. It was perfectly placed to be seen through the trees. That ding sound signifying the special time had gone off on his bracelet. He sat up and looked over at Three. "Don't...even...think about it." Four rolled his eyes again and mouthed "Muh muh muh." to tease Three's demented attitude.
Back to looking up at the sky. You know what this needed. A song. "Stars shinning bright above you-" Three sat up, fully awake and looked at Four like he was joking. "Really? Seriously? More singing?"
"Yes seriously! Singing helps me relax. Maybe you should try it." Three was really started to get fed up with this. How hard was it to get his way of living life into Four's mind? "I don't sing and I don't relax! This is the way I am and I like it! I would also like a little SILENCE!"
He tried to fall back asleep, but then heard the sound of a soft Ukulele playing. What the hell!? He whipped his head around to see Four, playing the instrument and looking at him in an arrogant manner.
"Hello darkness, my old friend. Iv'e come to talk with you again."
Creatures began flying around and singing along while Three looked confused and speechless. A small spider came up next to him and whispered "Hello..."
"Because a vision softly creeping."
Three flicked the spider off his arm without breaking eye contact with Four.
"Left its seeds while I was sleeping."
"And the vision that was planted in my brain."
"Still remains."
"Within the sound....of silence."
All the creatures disappeared just as mysteriously from when they arrived and Four strummed one last time on the Ukulele. Three got up and softly asked "May I?" Four smiled and gave him the instrument. Three instantly threw it into the fire and he went back to sleep while Four watched his Ukulele burn, mouth agape. This was going to be a long adventure...

Magical Recipes; how to approach an established recipe as a Kitchen Witch
Art by forestfolke on Deviant Art I think one of the most confusing things for new, or even experienced, kitchen witches is how to expand their recipe catalogue for their practice. A lot of new kitchen witches think you need to follow a recipe that has been written special for Witchy Cooking. That the regular recipes they find or use just won't have any magical purpose. But that's just not the case.
You don't need to buy special cook books with recipes exclusively for Kitchen Witches. You can take any recipe that already exists and apply it to your wants or needs. To help explain this process, I'm going to take a recipe I found online then reverse engineer it into a Kitchen Witch Recipe.
The Recipe
My Partner often donates blood, so eating foods that keep his Iron up is important to us. But I also want this dish to be emotionally satisfying Vs just eating a Steak, which neither of us find particularly appealing. I thought I'd try a Cottage Pie (also called Shepperd's Pie) because I want to find a new recipe that will help use up ingredients. Don't get me wrong, soups are awesome; but I tend to go a little light on the meat/alternatives. I tend to keep a good supply of ground meat in the freezer, so know I'll have most of the key stuff.
So I'm starting with this recipe since I don't have my own Cottage Pie recipe. Here are the Ingredients: Filling
1 lb lean ground beef
1 lb ground sausage (I use Jimmy Dean pork sausage)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 small yellow onion , chopped
2 ribs celery , chopped
1-2 carrots , chopped (about 1 cup)
3 cloves garlic , minced
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cube beef bouillon
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon fresh thyme , chopped (or ¼ teaspoon dried thyme)
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary , chopped (or ¼ teaspoon dried rosemary)
2 bay leaves
½ cup frozen corn
½ cup frozen peas
Topping
2 1/2 pounds Russet potatoes , Yukon gold or russet potatoes
¼ cup sour cream
½ cup milk
4 tablespoons butter
salt and pepper , to taste
½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese , for topping
So let's start with the topping since it has less ingredients to worry about. For those unfamiliar with cottage pie, the base of the pie is mostly meat and Veggies, and then it's topped with some mashed potatoes before baking. It's common to just use leftover mashed potatoes. So, I'll just use my mashed potato and cauli recipe. In short, it's half potato and half cauliflower with roast garlic and seasonings. Both Potatoes and Cauliflower have protective properties. Since this is the protective top layer of the Pie, I thought the symbolism carried itself further. The Cauliflower will also work well together with the Garlic to Banish any negativity from the pie, as well as from those who consume it.
Now let's break down the filling. Starting with the largest Ingredients. Ground Beef and Ground Sausage. Ground meats in general are fantastic for grounding energy. I'll probably sub the ground beef for whatever ground meat I have on hand, so the grounding aspect is what I'll focus on for now. Potatoes are also good for grounding. This is over all is going to be a very down to earth, hearty meal. Next, the vegetables. Onion, Celery, Carrots, Peas, and Corn. Corn is not something I use on the regular, but it's has a good use in Kitchen Magic as a power multiplier. Similar to Rice. Carrots have heath and energy properties, something I want in a dish for improving Iron Levels. Though I never particularly enjoyed peas, I'll use them for their health and abundance benefit. Green Peas are also high in Iron. Celery is great ingredient to add to a dish to add lasting happiness and satisfaction. Which I defiantly want so when the dish is consumed, you don't feel disappointed. Onion will add onto the Protection and Health. But Onion also has good cleansing properties, so I have the habit of adding it to my pan first to cleanse my cooking station. I'll probably cook some or all of the onion with the meat. Now the Seasonings. Not everything used in your cooking needs to have a magical purpose. It can just be there to enhance the taste of your food. I use Worcestershire sauce often in my cooking with no thought to it's magical abilities. I use it all the time when I want to add some extra umami or savory flavour. But there are some things we can add to help enhance the magic. Thyme, Rosemary, and Bay. All three of these herbs are good for health and healing. I can feed this to my SO before a donation to make sure his Iron is up. Then I can feed it to them after when their body is recuperating. Though I may forgo the Bay leaf. I tend to worry I'll leave it in my food when it's not supposed to be eaten XD But that said, I think I'll add a few of my own. Marjoram seems like it will go well in this, which will add to the Happiness and Comfort of my meal. I wanna add some Basil and Cayenne to this. The Basil I'm hoping will help stop long term fatigue, so my SO's mind is not affected by the donation. Cayenne for a blast of extra energy. I'll also add some extra Garlic and Parsley. I'll also make a few other personal tweaks like swapping the Flour for Cornstarch. I prefer using corn starch in my sauces, and I already have corn as an ingredient anyway, so it should mesh together better on their property levels. Cooking/Assembling Now that I have the magical properties of all my ingredients established, I simply need to assemble them according to the recipe directions. The only difference is, when I add something to the dish, I know what I'm adding not only on a Mundane level, but also the magic properties of the food. I'm adding ground meat to ground my dish and the people consuming it. I add Celery to help the food be emotionally satisfying. I'll add peas to enhance health and healing. Ect.
Also note, you don't need to do as big of a dissection every time you want to cook a recipe as a Kitchen Witch. If you come across an ingredient or two you are familiar with the magic properties for (Or the ingredient just has a spiritual meaning to you personally) You can add it to your meal with that meaning in mind. Like adding a little honey to your tea to sweeten and brighten your day. Also note, most ingredients have multiple magical uses. Just as they have multiple culinary uses. You can add honey to tea for happiness, or may may choose to add it help heal and get over a cold you have. Or you can add it for both reasons! Or neither reason; maybe you just want some honey. You are the Castor, the Decider, the Kitchen Witch!
Eat well and be well 💜💜💜

7 Vegetables That Support Healthy Blood Sugar
Managing blood sugar can feel like a never-ending battle. But what if I told you that something as simple as veggies could help? Eating the right vegetables not only adds nutrients to your diet but can also play a role in controlling your blood sugar levels. Let’s dig into seven fantastic vegetables that can support your health in this area.
1. Spinach: The Leafy Powerhouse
Spinach is a true superstar among vegetables. Packed with vitamins and minerals, this leafy green is low in calories and carbs. With its high fiber content, spinach helps slow down glucose absorption. Toss some fresh spinach into your salad or blend it into a smoothie for an easy boost to your meals.
2. Broccoli: The Blood Sugar Fighter
Broccoli is more than just a side dish; it's a warrior when it comes to blood sugar control. It's rich in fiber and contains compounds that may reduce insulin resistance. Eating steamed or roasted broccoli brings out its flavor without losing its benefits. Plus, it’s an easy veggie to sneak into casseroles or pasta dishes.
3. Carrots: Naturally Sweet and Savory
Carrots bring a natural sweetness to the table. They have a low glycemic index, meaning they won't spike your blood sugar levels. Snacking on raw carrots makes a healthy choice, or you can add them to soups and stews for a hearty flavor. Who doesn’t love that crunch?
4. Bell Peppers: Colorful and Crunchy
Bell peppers aren’t just pretty to look at; they’re also incredibly healthy. They’re loaded with vitamins A and C, and their high water content helps keep you hydrated. Their fiber helps manage blood sugar, making them perfect for salads or stir-fries. Grab a variety of colors to enjoy different flavors and nutrients.
5. Kale: The Nutrient-Dense Green
Kale is another leafy green that deserves a spot on your plate. It’s packed with antioxidants and is low in carbohydrates. Adding kale to your meals can help regulate blood sugar levels and keep you feeling full longer. Try kale chips for a tasty snack or mix it into your favorite smoothie for a nutritious punch.
6. Sweet Potatoes: A Healthier Starch Option
Unlike white potatoes, sweet potatoes are higher in fiber and have a lower glycemic index. This makes them a better choice for those looking to keep blood sugar steady. Bake or mash them for a delicious side dish, or even make sweet potato fries for a fun twist on a classic.
7. Zucchini: The Versatile Veggie
Zucchini is more than just a low-calorie vegetable; it's loaded with vitamins and minerals. With plenty of fiber, zucchini helps keep your blood sugar levels stable. Use it in stir-fries, bake it, or spiralize it for a healthy pasta alternative. It adapts well to any dish, making it a kitchen favorite.
Conclusion: Adding Veggies to Your Plate
Incorporating these seven vegetables into your diet can support healthy blood sugar levels while offering a variety of flavors and nutrients. Whether you enjoy them raw, steamed, or roasted, these veggies can become your allies in managing your health. So, next time you’re planning a meal, think about how you can add a splash of color and nutrition to your plate!

I've always loved to cook, but since I started working from home in 2020, I've really leaned into it as a joyful hobby. I live with three other adults and I'm the only cook, so I have a lot of opportunity to practice and flex what I've learned!
I've never posted my own words much on here, but honestly, I've been missing the LJ days in the current social media hellscape. So fuck it, I'm gonna start sharing what I've made when the urge strikes me. I want to share home cooking tips that I love, too - I still use recipes a lot of the time, but I love to freestyle and make the dishes my own.
Tonight I made one of my favorite quick dinners that's nice and flexible with the ingredients - pesto pasta. I grew up on basil pesto, but truly anything goes!
1/2 cup nuts or seeds - the classic is pine nuts, but those are expensive. My favorites are pistachios and sunflower seeds.
1/3 cup hard sharp cheese, like parmesan or pecorino romano, cut into chunks.
3-4 cups greens and/or herbs - I've used arugula, chard, mustard and carrot greens, blanched kale and collard greens... I don't think you can go wrong. Herb-wise I've only gone with basil or cilantro, but I bet there are a lot of possibilities.
4-6 cloves of garlic - note that I'm of Italian heritage and have already increased this level beyond what you'd find in a lot of recipes lmao.
A few teaspoons of salt, fresh cracked pepper, and a few dashes of lemon juice - vinegar would also work, just needs a bit of acid.
About 1/3 cup of olive oil, more if needed to get the blender going. You can also loosen it up with some water from cooking the pasta if needed.
Throw it all in a blender and go until it's all emulsified! This makes enough for two pounds of pasta. It's a fantastic meal to have leftovers of, we eat it for lunch throughout the week after I've made a big batch.
While I usually make this for pasta, you can also put a dollop on steak, chicken, eggs, steamed or roasted vegetables... universal condiment as far as I'm concerned! It's a great way to use up greens and herbs that are starting to wilt.

Baked Chicken with Potatoes and Carrots (1 spoon)
Today was a prime example of “completely out of spoons” and how it can affect cooking. The original plan for today was one-pan chicken chasseur - I had everything I needed for it, all was cool - but it was a particularly bad day pain-wise, with the added ‘fun’ of a hard day at work. (Even though I work from home, there’s not much that having to type not one but two fifteen minute-long dictations of medical reports as dictated by a gentleman with a slightly difficult accent, a tendency to speak too close to the microphone, and an annoying habit of skipping around in the dictation and going back and correcting something he dictated two paragraphs ago, this on top of the usual workload, will improve.)
What I really needed was an even simpler recipe - fewer ingredients, less fuss, nearly zero effort. Plus actually using the chicken leg quarters I bought for the chasseur. I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be nice if I could throw a full set of meal components into the oven and just let it sit for awhile, and come away with dinner all ready for serving?” Which gave me an idea. I dug around for the best way to roast chicken leg quarters with potatoes and veg all at once. I found more or less what I wanted on a site called Eatfoodlicious, though I am going to recommend some changes to the recipe. Not for ease of cooking; no, that’s fine. More for flavour and so on. But I thought this one was worth sharing, so here we go.
Here’s what you’ll need
Four chicken leg quarters (though you could probably do breasts too)
1lb potatoes (I found three good-sized ones worked fine), chopped into 1″ pieces
3 large carrots, also chopped into 1″ pieces
OIl of your choosing (see recommendation notes later)
Spices to taste
Like I say, I have a few things I want to try next time, but they’ll go in the recommendation section because I don’t know how they’ll work yet and I try not to throw untested recipes out into the world.
Here’s what you do:
Heat oven to about 425 degrees F (215 degrees C, about 190 degrees C fan assist)
Put your chopped potatoes and carrots in a bowl; add about 2 tablespoons of oil and some salt and pepper, then mix until the vegetables are fully coated and place the vegetables in the bottom of a deep baking dish a layer deep.
Coat your chicken quarters with a bit more oil and season to taste (I recommend scoring the skin a bit so more of the flavour gets into the meat), then place on top of the vegetables
Put the whole thing into the oven and cook for about 45-60 minutes or until chicken is done (if you’ve got a meat thermometer, apparently you want an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees F)
Again, literally that simple. It’s more or less the epitome of “throw everything into a suitable vessel and cook for an extended period of time’. You get your veg, you get your potato, you get your meat, and you get lots of leftovers. Still, not quite perfect, and there are some things I’m going to try next time, as follows:
About the oil - I used sunflower because it’s what I had, but salt and pepper isn’t quite enough for me. Next time, I might spice it up with some of the same spices that went on the chicken, maybe some garlic puree or minced garlic. Roasted garlic is great on its own, so why not here? Alternatively, there’s an option of using melted butter or, if you have it available, goose fat. Goose fat is fantastic for using in roast vegetables.
For the spices on the chicken, I used garlic pepper, onion granules, a little bit of celery salt, some ground coriander, some paprika, and some salt. Next time, I think I’ll use garlic puree to give the skins the oil treatment, use regular pepper instead of garlic pepper, and maybe up the celery salt a little. But honestly, you do you; spices are a thing you measure with your heart.
Not much else to it, really, which is good because I don’t have the spoons to keep going much today anyway. But it just goes to prove how easy this one is, since I managed to get it cooked despite not having a whole lot left in the spoon budget and still managed to update. Of course, knowing I have another three days’ worth of meals in microwave-safe containers helps too. And I can use the little individual bottle of red wine for bolognaise sauce later. (Which I’ll probably provide the recipe for at some point, probably when I do a post about lasagne.)

DOVAHJOJO: a bizarre adventure.
Saturnalia Sorrows.
Jotunn Jostjarna or "Jojo" is a young boy living on his family's farm in Cheydinhal, Cyrodiil. Tonight will be the last Saturnalia he will spend with his family.
On the outskirts of Cheydinhal city sat a little farm, Jostjarna Ranch. The cozy little farmhouse sat beside a tiny pond with a field of grazing cows on the other end, inside the farmer, his wife and their young son were all waking up to the morning of Satinalia.
“Happy Saturnalia Mama, Papa!” the young boy chipped as he excitedly hugged his parents goodmorning, “good morning and happy saturnalia to you too, Jojo” the boy’s father said mirthfully.
“Would you like to come with me to pick up some ingredients for tonight’s feast?”, “yes mama” Jojo hopped excitedly down the stairs and into his winter boots.
Cheydinhal was beautiful this time of year, the whole city was decorated in cheerful red and blue hues, candles lit up the streets and the scent of baked goods filled the air.
Snow was piled high all throughout the city and children took to making snow-soldiers, snow-aedra, sledding and throwing snowball fights. “Mama can I go play with the other children?”, “of course, just come back when we call you” his mother smiled and as she watched her son gleefully run off to play.
“Hi guys, is it ok if I play with you?”, “ew no!” a girl shrieked, “why should we let an elf like you play with us?” a boy snickered, “yhea, go find another snooty Altmer to play with!” another boy laughed.
Jojo held back tears as the bullies ran away laughing at him.
“I-I’ll play with you” a scrawny boy with bright red hair said, he was hiding shadows and was dressed in fine clothes “what’s your name?”, “Jotunn Jostjarna but people call me Jotti or Jojo for short” he grinned. “What’s your name?”, “Cicerolli Zeppli but I like being called Cicero for short” the boy said.
The duo made a snow-soldier with a bucket for a helmet, pebbles for eyes and a carrot for a nose, “carrots are my favorite food” Cicero hummed “and sweetrolls”.
“You should try my Mama’s carrot cake sweetrolls they are fantastic!” Jotti beamed.
Jotti heard his mother calling for him.
“Oh I gotta go, but here take this, consider it a saturnalia gift” Jotti said as he wrapped his patchwork blue scarf around Cicero’s neack, “this…f-for me?” Cicero said in tears “thank you”.
Jotti and his mother returned home to feast, they dined on roasted venison, vegetable soup and holiday treats like birch cookies and sweet nogg. “Are you ready to open your presents?” his mother turned to him and laughed a little as she saw her son had a mustache of sweet nogg on his upper lip, “I am mama, WAIT you should open my presents to you first!” he excitedly hopped about.
“We can wait to open ours, you go ahead and open yours” Jotti’s father chuckled.
The gift from his mother was a ring that regenerated his magicka and the gift from his father was a strange dagger “whoa dad what is this made of?” Jotti eyed the blade amazed, “skyforged steel, I saw a vendor selling it, he had come from my homeland of skyrim”.
“Papa, do you think I’ll ever get to visit skyrim?” Jotti’s big blue eyes sparkled with joy, “perhaps one day” his father smiled and rustled his son’s deep brown hair.
A loud banging at their door took their attention away from the night's festivities.
“Oh? I wonder who that could be?” Jotti’s mother pondered as she got up to open the door, “Jojo…head into the kitchen and be quiet” his father said as he reached for his sword which rested on the fireplace mantle.
Just as Jotti had reached the back door he heard an awful sound, his mother screamed and his father shouted for him to run, Jotti did as he was told and booked it out the door.
He looked behind him and saw strange elves like his mother dressed in black and gold robes or in golden armor.
“Go! Kill the hybrid abomination!” one of them, a cruel looking woman ordered, “yes head justicar Elenwen” her men replied as they chased after Jotti.
Jotti ran, he ran like the freezing wind.
He ran into the forest and dove into a frigid river to escape them, his half nord blood gave him some resistance to the cold.
Jotti kept running even after he thought he had lost them.
Eventually he grew weak, he could not run forever.
Jotti collapsed in the snow…
Jotti awoke later in a temple, the priestess, a kind argonian woman, told him he was found by the guard and that he was in the city of Bravil.
Jotti stayed at the temple until he had recovered, while recovering he learned that the empire was being invaded.
The people who had killed his family were the Aldmeri Dominion, the Thalmor.
Jotti left the temple and now lives on the streets…but fate smiles kindly on him.

top 5 best meals you've ever had (so far) - seriously the way you talk about foods/restaurants in your area has me intrigued
Oh Lords okay we're going to stick SPECIFICALLY to meals in my area (Baltimore) and recent meals because if i were to bring in places I've traveled and go back past years the list would go on forever lmao
In no particular order-
Cosima- for my birthday last year we went to our local favorite Sicilian restaurant and had mussels with spicy Italian sausage and broth, a pizza to share with scallops/bacon/chili oil, I had the duck breast with yam puree and cranberry confit, and they brought us a limoncello tiramisu for dessert. The drink parings were an Italian golden ale and an amaro Manhattan.
Lamb tajine - i made this myself in the traditional clay tajine my bf got me for Christmas. We take half a leg of lamb, dice and marinade it in olive oil and Ras Al hanut, then brown it in a skillet. Once that's browned you add yams, beets, onions, figs, carrots, about two cups of beef broth, and a cup of red wine. Let it simmer for ten minutes then carefully ladle it into the warmed tajine, which should have been brought to temp in the oven. It cooks at 300° for about three hours or so, occasionally adding water if it gets too dry. It's excellent with pita and saffron rice.
Petit Louis - after i got out of my recent cancer treatment and isolation we went for dinner to my favorite french place here in Baltimore. It's a classic bistro style place with dusty mirrors and red leather seats and wine bottles on the wall. Their best deal is the prix fixe lunch they do from 11-2pm but i can't get away with it all the time. We shared the Pâte de campagne, had a glass of wine each to pair with our main courses, and i got the roast lamb, which was some of the best I've had in a while. And yes i treated myself to a pot of chocolate mousse and a glass of Armagnac for dessert.
Neopol Smokery - this is the smokery/deli I've been talking about a lot recently they have a store front set up in an open market and visit a few farmers markets where you can get their prepared salmon filets, pies, grav lox, and more. The smokery in the market however makes some of the best sandwiches I've had and they also have smoked mussels, duck confit, salmon plates, all kind of daily rotating offerings for lunch and dinner and the staff are phenomenal, everything you want out of the old school deli you become a regular at.
Mason's Lobster Rolls- look. I do not live in New England. I know that. Our lobster will not compare. These are however the only lobster rolls i will eat outside of New England. They do them every still, CT/Bar Harbor/RI, and have a few soup options as well. It's pricey as good seafood usually is, but it's filling and delicious so i tend not to mind as a treat. Also fantastic crew running the show.
Honorable mentions
Wet City Brewing - great drinks, great brisket poutine, excellent vibes. Highly recommended for hanging out and getting some food after a long day though parking will be a headache.
Di Pasquale's - old school Italian deli and market that is so old school Al Capone once did their book keeping as a teenager. Yes it's actually true the owner has the old employee registers from his grandfather hung up on the back wall of the new store. The sandwiches are stunning, the arancini are authentic, the cannoli are worth getting two. Tied with Pastore's for my favorite Italian deli (the latter is closer to work).
Clark Burger - great burgers, great poutine, next to a vintage 1920s movie theater that routinely shows golden age classics alongside new films. My favorite local burger joint.

ALL OF THIS.
I was vegetarian for a decade and the food I made was so good that my omnivore friends would be BAFFLED there was no meat. It was only when I tried to imitate a meat dish that the lack of meat became obvious.
Now I have a garden and grow my own vegetables (not many, but BOY OH BOY can I grow the FUCK out of radishes and carrots!) and my five year old son rarely lets any of the veggies make it to the kitchen since he just eats his way through the veggie garden, munching stuff straight out of the ground/off the plant. He eats his own weight in vegetables because we’ve shown him how delicious they can be when they’re grown fresh.
Vegetables are excellent. So is meat. Everything can taste good when done right. Hell, I’ve even eaten oysters I loved because a fantastic chef prepared them in the most delightful way.
If you’re scared of vegetables or don’t know what to do with them, ask. Ask friends for their favorite recipes, look through old family cookbooks, experiment with flavors, try things! There’s an entire world of amazing flavor waiting for you! When in doubt, splash them with oil and seasoning and roast those babies. Roasted veggies get nice and soft with a little crisp on the outside and are DIVINE.
I’m always happy to share fun ways to make veggies taste amazing. Even as a filthy meat-eater, I still eat primarily vegetable based meals because they’re just that damned tasty.
As an omnivore who likes vegan and vegetarian cooking I think the mistake a lot of people make when trying to convince meat eaters to go plant based is trying to convince them that something you’ve got will replace meat for them.
I like vegan nuggets and real chicken nuggets for different reasons. They taste different. They only taste identical to you because you haven’t eaten meat for five years.
When cooking for myself I only eat meat maybe like three times a week because vegetarian cooking is often cheaper and it tastes good.
Like just give people the actual recipes you use that aren’t pasta. Every time you ask what to eat on a meatless day people are like. Pasta. I don’t want pasta every day.
Point out the foods people already eat that are vegetarian. Like sweet potato fries, veggie chow mein, grilled mushrooms, mashed potatoes, black bean enchiladas, peanut butter sandwiches. Tell people what you microwave when you’re drunk at 3am. Show people that vegetables are so good they’ll want them in their diet.
Also some people are just never gonna go vegan. They’re just not. I’m certainly not, and I love vegan food. But since I’ve fallen in love with vegetarian cooking I eat meat much less and I’m much more careful about picking the meat I do eat. Doesn’t that align with a lot of your goals?
Impossible burger doesn’t taste like meat. But you know what tastes really good? A mushroom fajita taco. Falafel. Potato pancakes with applesauce. Smoky vegan collared greens. Hot potato salad with herbs. Palak paneer with rice. Tofu Pad Thai with extra peanuts. Some of my favorite foods of all time, and I’m a dirty rotten meat eater. Use THAT to get your foot in the door. And be more accepting of some half-assed victories. I’m on your side for the most part, believe it or not. But stop trying to claim certain things are just like meat. You and I both know you don’t plan most of your weeknight dinners around meat substitutes.

Cooking on a Budget: Affordable Meals from Douglasville, Georgia
Douglasville, Georgia, a city with rich Southern charm and a thriving community, is also home to a growing food culture. With its mix of rural and urban influences, residents can access fresh, affordable ingredients that make cooking on a budget a breeze. There are plenty of delicious, budget-friendly meal options, whether cooking for a family, living solo, or simply trying to save money.
Simple Southern Comfort Foods
Southern cuisine is known for its hearty, comforting flavors, and the good news is that many of these dishes can be made on a budget. A classic fried chicken is one of the most popular and affordable meals in the South. With just a few ingredients—chicken, flour, eggs, and seasonings—you can whip up a crispy, golden batch of fried chicken. Consider buying bone-in pieces, often cheaper than boneless cuts, to keep costs low.
For side dishes, think of the staples that pair perfectly with fried chicken, such as mashed potatoes and collard greens. Potatoes are incredibly versatile and affordable, and a large bag can last you for multiple meals. Collard greens, a Southern classic, can be made with simple seasonings and often come from local farmers markets in the Douglasville area. This creates an inexpensive, filling, and satisfying meal, perfect for feeding a family without breaking the bank.
Utilizing Local Farmer's Markets for Fresh, Affordable Produce
In Douglasville, the local farmers market is a treasure trove of fresh produce, often sold at prices lower than those at chain grocery stores. Shopping at these markets allows you to purchase seasonal fruits and vegetables that are both healthy and affordable. You can pick up fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash for next to nothing, and many local vendors also offer bulk discounts, which is ideal for those looking to cook in larger quantities.
One popular budget-friendly dish that utilizes fresh produce is vegetable stir-fry. Stir-fries are an excellent way to get a variety of vegetables into your diet while keeping costs down. You can throw in whatever you pick up at the farmers market, such as bell peppers, carrots, and zucchini, and sauté them in some oil with soy sauce or teriyaki sauce for flavor. This meal is nutritious and easy to prepare, making it perfect for anyone looking to make the most of their grocery budget while enjoying tasty meals.
Creative Casseroles for Leftovers
Another great way to save money while cooking is by using leftovers creatively. Casseroles are the perfect dish for turning small portions of leftover meat, vegetables, or rice into a hearty meal that stretches further. For example, a simple chicken and rice casserole can take leftover roast chicken, cooked rice, and some veggies and transform them into a filling dish that can feed multiple people.
In Douglasville, many grocery stores carry store-brand items, which are significantly cheaper than their name-brand counterparts. Buying canned goods like cream of mushroom soup or a bag of frozen mixed vegetables can be an excellent base for casserole dishes. With some creativity, you can come up with endless variations, from tuna noodle casseroles to cheesy vegetable bakes, all made with ingredients you likely already have in your pantry. You can also enjoy leftovers throughout the week by cooking in larger batches, saving time and money.
Easy, Budget-Friendly One-Pot Meals
One-pot meals are a fantastic way to save time and money in the kitchen, and they’re trendy for busy families or individuals on a tight budget. These meals typically require fewer ingredients and minimize cleanup, making them cost-effective and convenient. A classic one-pot meal in the South is jambalaya, which can be made with rice, sausage, and various vegetables. If you prefer a vegetarian option, a simple bean chili can be made with dried beans, tomatoes, onions, and spices, creating a delicious meal for a fraction of the cost of pre-packaged chili mixes.
In Douglasville, you can often find beans and rice in bulk at local grocery stores, allowing you to prepare hearty, filling meals without spending much. Also, sausage and chicken are on sale regularly, providing affordable protein options. One-pot meals like these are budget-friendly and perfect for meal prepping for the week ahead. A big pot of jambalaya or chili can be stored and enjoyed for days, reducing the need to cook multiple times during the week.
Budget-Friendly Cooking Tips for Every Kitchen
Cooking on a budget in Douglasville doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor or quality. Creating tasty meals that don’t cost a fortune is easy with some planning. Create a weekly meal plan using ingredients in your pantry or fridge. Shop for sales, use coupons, and buy in bulk when possible. Additionally, making larger batches of food and freezing leftovers can help ensure you always have a budget-friendly meal ready.
Another helpful tip is to utilize versatile ingredients that can be used in multiple dishes. For example, buying a large bag of rice can allow you to make everything from stir-fries to casseroles to soups. Additionally, using less expensive cuts of meat, like chicken thighs or ground beef, can help lower the overall cost of meals. By making minor adjustments to your shopping and cooking habits, you can enjoy various delicious and affordable meals that fit your budget and satisfy your appetite.
