The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters

I remember disliking this book so much more when I read it before! I think I was mad that it didn't have lesbians in it, and that's not entirely fair to Waters. She is allowed to 'have other characters' and 'explore other voices'. I SUPPOSE.

As with any Waters book, I can't keep myself from wild conjecture, she just brings it out in me I don't apologize in the fucking slightest.

Anyway, this book is actually pretty good if you're into the fading post-WW2 death throes of the landed class in the UK, played against the romanticism surrounding that whole blueblood situation ironically coming from people who could never touch it.

I think what I like best about it, though there is a lot to like here, is Faraday as being guilty of that very strange working-class illness of romanticizing title and blood, and wanting on some level to be a part of it. I would love to make this a British problem, but I regret that it is not, as I have seen it in plenty of My Fellow Americans of an older era obsessed with the idea of using ancestry to chase down a claim to being "noble," though I admit this is probably actually somewhat more common in a country not descended mostly from people needing to get the fuck out of Dodge for one reason or another.

This is no longer in the fashion--most peers my age looking for ancestry, which I am gonna cop to not being something I love, are looking for a connection to struggle or oppression. But I do think it's roughly the same thing: Using something someone had in the past to create ourselves as character and authority in the present.

Faraday has thought about this fucking house and everything it represents since he was a child. He falls in love with Caroline not for her own sake, but because of his growing desire to be a part of this house even in its teardown ruin. He doesn't even get a first name, because, a little bit like in DuMaurier's Rebecca, his existence is about POSITION, and lucking into being a part of a 'great house' even though in the great house is a sort of rot. He desperately wants to claim Caroline but more than that, Hundreds Hall. Look at me now, I'm married to the gentry and have a stately home.

The Uk was (and maybe even is on some level) in this tug of war between tradition and everything around that, paired with a post world war necessity of modernity, of providing for the actual people of this country instead a bunch of people quite literally born lucky. It's extremely easy to be like, 'The rich people wanted it to stay the same and everyone else was against it" but you know that's actually too simple, we've all known people who couldn't dream of being in these worlds lionizing the ~grand traditions of nobility~ and even Faraday mentions being against the NHS because he can see his time as a private doctor and thus 'special' coming to an end.

OKay I've talked too much about Faraday.

It is also a lot of fun, for me, this idea of destructive rot coming from within, that the seeds to destroy the class the Ayres belong to are planted within the place itself. That the weakness for them to self-destruct was just waiting for a moment. It's a fun ghost story! Sarah Waters can write her ass off! Is it my favorite of hers? No, but I also don't think I gave it a fair enough shake.

Quel régal ! J’ai adoré ce roman anglais aux accents gothiques, et pourtant bien ancré, intelligemment, dans une critique sociale fine.

On est dans l’après-guerre, et l’arrivée du méritant Dr. Faraday, dont la mère était femme de service du domaine Hundreds, château de la famille Ayres qui, ayant connu le faste, ne parvient plus à cacher sa déréliction, est l’occasion de confronter ces deux mondes. Sur cette toile de fond toujours présente se greffe le schéma gothique attendu, espéré, comme dans les romans victoriens : la maison, autrefois sublime et luxueuse, tombe en ruine, et la famille semble en proie à une mélancolie lugubre.

Des phénomènes étranges se succèdent, et le docteur Faraday, le narrateur, devient un ami de la famille, qui essaie de rassurer les uns et les autres… mais les forces obscures semblent insatiables…

Ce que j’ai aimé, c’est évidemment l’atmosphère, car c’est de cela que se nourrit un bon livre à suspense qui veut évoquer des fantômes sans susciter l’hilarité du lecteur. Mais aussi la grande finesse d’écriture, la psychologie subtile qui saisit habilement les personnages : le narrateur lui-même, solidement cartésien, progressivement envoûté par ces aristocrates tourmentés, la mère, délicate et complètement obsédée par la perte de sa plus jeune fille, le fils fougueux, blessé de guerre et tourmenté, et enfin Caroline, personnage plein de paradoxes, à la fois solide et terrienne, énigmatique et indépendante.

Plus de 700 pages. Ça pourrait paraître long au vu du peu d’événements marquants qui se produisent, et pourtant, j’ai été complètement happée, par l’histoire, l’atmosphère, la fluidité de l’enchaînement des actions, la justesse de ton, la limpidité de la narration. Pas de gros sabots, pas de macabre lourdaud. Une délicatesse, une élégance simple et efficace qui vous prend par la main, et vous emporte.

On peut réfléchir pour interpréter le roman, plusieurs voies s’offrent à nous grâce aux allusions de la narration. La version quasi politique m’a bien séduite, à vrai dire. Mais elle n’exclut pas l’irrationnelle. Comme dans tout bon roman fantastique classique, l’hésitation est de mise, c’est ce qui en fait tout son sel.

Je suis ravie de ma découverte et vais vite plonger dans un autre roman de l’autrice galloise.

i think i saw you mention reading the little stranger once..? if not disregard this but if you have, im curious as to your interpretation of the ending and the ghost's identity 👀

[MAJOR spoilers in this: I go into intense detail of the whole plot. if you're thinking about reading this book please DON'T read this until you're done! it's such a good story and it should absolutely be read with as little prior knowledge as possible.]

OK [rubs hands together] first of all let's look at the part of the book that its title comes from:

The subliminal mind has many dark, unhappy corners, after all. Imagine something loosening itself from one of those corners. Let's call it a---a germ. And let's say conditions prove right for that germ to develop---to grow, like a child in the womb. What would this little stranger grow into? A sort of shadow-self, perhaps: a Caliban, a Mr Hyde. A creature motivated by all the nasty impulses and hungers the conscious mind had hoped to keep hidden away: things like envy and malice and frustration…

I think the clue is right here. the ghost is Faraday, our narrator.

from an early age, Faraday has been obsessed with Hundreds Hall. he attended a garden party there as a child, and in fact was only born because of its existence -- his parents were staff at the house, and met there. he is fascinated by the house, by its grandness, by his forbidden access when he was a child; immediately he wished to possess a piece of it so badly that he vandalised it, taking a small piece of the wall with him.

later, as an adult, he gets intimately entangled with the family there. he is overly concerned with their business, and is very protective of the legacy of the house. the book focuses a lot on legacy and grief; of changing times and the inevitability of decay -- not just of buildings (quite literally; Hundreds Hall is collapsing around their ears) but of entire time periods. the Ayres are of a vanishing generation, a class of people who were already becoming obsolete but whose exit was hurried by the Second World War. they, and their grand house, are outdated -- but Faraday has a profound attachment to the place, and feels that this natural decay (as all things must, eventually, cease to be) is a threat to the house. he wants to protect it, and everything it stands for for him (his past; his childhood that he seems to idealise at least a little; and of course his personal attachment to it -- and his possessiveness) and this manifests in concern for the family.

gradually, over the course of the story, the ghost gets rid of all threats to Hundreds Hall. Roderick, the heir, is mentally unstable because of the war, and also has no loyalty to the house past a duty that he feels he cannot escape from. the ghost begins by tormenting him into insanity and driving him from the house. Angela, the aging mother, seems to gradually come around to the idea that this way of life is useless, and seems to slowly lose her own attachment to the place -- and the ghost torments her in the form of her small daughter who died young, and whose death she never got over. she kills herself, and it's strongly implied that her daughter's ghost encouraged her to do this under the guise of them being together. even the dog, which, after biting a neighbour's child, could have opened the Ayreses up to lawsuits that would have cost them the house, is killed directly by Faraday when he puts it down.

Caroline, the daughter and sole heir after her brother is deemed mentally unfit, escapes this fate for some time. despite the fact she's perhaps the harshest and most realistic about Hundreds Hall, Faraday is in love with her, and therefore she's safe because, if he marries her, he will be the master of the house. Faraday thinks he can save it; that the two of them can do something with it, and I believe that his infatuation with Caroline has nothing to do with her. she represents the house to him -- ownership of it, and its future. he loves her for what she is and what she represents, but not for who she is. Caroline initially accepts his proposal because she does have some feelings for him herself, and also because she's under pressure to wed (such was the time then, where a woman was expected to marry), but she obviously senses that it isn't right. she breaks things off with Faraday (who has naturally not noticed her reluctance at all, being literally delusional with happiness), Faraday is heartbroken and jilted, and shortly afterwards Caroline encounters what appears to be the ghost on the stairs, and falls (or is thrown) to her death.

let's look at that quote again. the subliminal mind has many dark, unhappy corners; a shadow-self; a creature motivated by all the nasty impulses and hungers the conscious mind had hoped to keep hidden away: things like envy and malice and frustration.

is not the ghost often described as a shadow? on the stairs; outside the nursery -- was it not a dark shape, a shadow-form? and it's beyond doubt that Faraday harbours all of these things: he is profoundly unhappy, even if he doesn't acknowledge it himself; he has a lonely, unfulfilled life; he is envious of those who own the house, envious of those outside his class, self-conscious of his working class background. this in turn leads to frustration, and then to outright malice -- but he is a controlled man, for the most part, and all of these urges go somewhere deep. as soon as he starts becoming intimately involved with the house, the haunting begins. and look at the nature of the haunting at first: fire. destructive and purifying: "if I can't have it, no-one can!" once Roderick -- his biggest threat as an umarriagable (for Faraday) heir -- is out of the way, the fire ceases. the haunting turns to the form of the little girl, the dead daughter, in order to torment the mother. it could even be argued that the dog was tormented into violence because Caroline was so close to it, and Faraday wanted to remove her entire support network and drive her closer to him. the haunting shifts, targeting each of the Ayres family individually and personally, often using private information that Faraday knows because of his position as a friend of the family. then, finally, when his last chance fails, it rises up as one final act of malice and kills Caroline ("if I can't have her, no-one can!").

and still Faraday wanders the abandoned house, long after the occupants are dead or otherwise gone. the house has a reputation for being haunted, but he never experiences any of these things for himself. is this because the work is done, now there are no human threats to Hundreds Hall, and Faraday can technically wander it whenever he likes? or is it because he is the ghost, if unaware he is so, and only trespassers -- anyone who is not him -- are terrorised out? there could be an argument for either, but I think the question of the ghost's identity is beyond doubt.

Science Saturday

This week we present Conversations on Chemistry: In Which the Elements of that Science are Familiarly Explained and Illustrated by Experiments and Plates, written anonymously by the English author Jane Haldimand Marcet (1769-1858). The first edition of the book was published in 1805, with many subsequent editions in both England and the United States. Here in Special Collections we hold an 1809 edition published in New Haven from Sidney's Press for Increase Cooke & Co., and an 1830 edition published in Harford for Cooke & Co. The 1809 edition has illustrations that are based on drawings by Jane Marcet.

Jane Marcet (maiden name Haldimand) and her husband, Swiss physician Alexander Marcet were very involved in the literary and scientific circles in London. Alexander was a fellow of the  Royal Society, and Jane attended many lectures there with him. Jane Marcet is known for popularizing scientific principles, especially the works of chemist Humphry Davy, whose lectures Jane attended. As is clearly shown by the many reprintings, Jane Marcet’s Conversations on Chemistry was wildly popular. The book was framed as a conversation between a teacher Mrs. B and her two pupils, Emily and Caroline. In the preface to the 1809 edition, Jane Marcet explained she wanted to write a book on chemistry especially to educate women on the subject because it was something that really caught her own interest. Jane wrote:

“On attending for the first time, experimental lectures, the author found it almost impossible to derive any clear or satisfactory information from the rapid demonstrations which are usually, and perhaps necessarily crowded into popular courses of this kind. But frequent opportunities having afterwards occurred of conversing with a friend on the subject of chemistry, and of repeating a variety of experiments, she became better acquainted with the principles of science, and began to feel highly interested in this pursuit.”

Jane was particularly skillful at making scientific principles easier to understand. An advertisement for the book in the 1830 edition states:

“The familiar and agreeable manner in which the “Conversations on Chemistry” are written renders this one of the most popular treatises on the subject which has ever appeared. The elegant and easy style also, in which the authoress has managed to convey scientific instruction is peculiarly adapted to the object of the work.”

Jane Marcet’s Conversations on Chemistry is credited as being extremely influential to Michael Faraday, an English physicist and chemist whose many experiments contributed greatly to the understanding of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Faraday started his early career as a bookbinder but pursued a life in science after reading Conversations on Chemistry.

'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.

This is the first (and so far, only) video with Kiril Kulish in the role of Billy. Unfortunately about 15 minutes of the show is missing due to battery issues. What's missing is: Grandma's song "We Go Dancing", the scene between Dad and Tony, the beginning of "Deep Into The Ground", and the scene between Mrs. Wilkinson and Dad discussing Billy's ballet. It appears the filmer was trying to conserve battery power and was trying to focus on Billy's scenes. DVD has been enhanced with main menu and thumbnail images for access to the various songs. A-

A very solid and funny cast. Nikki does a fantastic job acting and vocally. On wide shots there can be heads on the sides, but nothing that really obstructs the action. During Broadway previews, less than a month before the official premiere. So there are differences from the Cast Recording. Very nice video of the show however a bar can be visible in wide shots but it doesn't interfere with anything.

NOTES: A fantastic capture of the second tour cast. This is the first known dvd of the 2NT, and the cast doesn’t disappoint. David and Cody are strong leads with great voices and comedic timing. Pierce is perfect as McKinley. Tallia also does a great job; she has a strong belt and does an endearing rendition of Sal Tlay Ka Siti. This is a very nice capture with no obstruction or blackouts, and only a bit of washout in superwide shots of high-contrast scenes. The video is very steady and the sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call.

Yuletide 2020 fandom promos: family drama in big old houses edition (The Little Stranger + Edward, Edward) 

Crossposting from the Yuletide DW canon promo post, I give you all my first two spicy promos this year! I may well do one of these for Mary Reilly if I can find the time. Putting this one behind a cut because it is a long-ass post about books;  content warning for discussion of incest, abuse, and consent issues in the second promo.

FANDOM NAME: The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. (Yes, that Sarah Waters, which makes all the lesbian subtext seem extra intentional.) WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Wiser people than me have described the gothic novel (at least in its 20th century form) as the romance between a woman and a house -- if that's the case, The Little Stranger is a sort of fucked up love triangle that turns that model and its gendered assumptions inside out. Off the top of my head, I'd say Waters does a killer job echoing gothic literary precedents (Daphne du Maurier, Henry James, among others) without slipping into a pastiche -- the novel is a fairly serious treatment of postwar societal change and the British class system in the first half of the 20th century at the same time as it's a subtle and psychological ghost story pulling double-duty as a horror story about very human motives and resentments. Faraday is a sensible country doctor returning to Hundreds Hall after a single boyhood visit decades ago only to find his fascination with the house reignited. The house's sole residents are the Ayres family, along with their perceptive teenage maid Betty whose uneasy complaints are the initial cause of Faraday's presence at Hundreds. Caroline and Roderick Ayres are the last two surviving children, both unmarried; Caroline's a sturdy ex-Wren left a little at sea in civilian life and Roderick's a once-boyish RAF pilot who's struggling to manage the family estate while still physically and psychologically recovering from serious injuries. The hot and haunted matriarch is struggling to maintain the family residence, but she has plenty of private grief on her plate due to previous losses, and there are considerations to the family's survival at Hundreds that extend beyond the financial into the house's dark past and uncertain future. Faraday generously/""""generously"""" agrees to assist the family with their medical and practical concerns, and somehow things just seem to get worse from there as he grows increasingly entangled. Queasy class envy! Creeping horror! Wack sexual tension! Viable queer readings! Lots and lots of careful and atmospheric descriptions of crumbling creepy old houses! WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: The novel should be widely available in various formats (including audiobook) and is still in print, published in 2009; in paperback it's around 500 pages. There was a recent (and good, imo) film adaptation released in 2018 starring Ruth Wilson and Domhnall Gleeson. FANDOM: Edward, Edward - Lolah Burford WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Edward, Edward is a 1973 historical novel set between 1795 and 1816. It concerns a sensitive and beautiful youth coming of age in the early 18th century and his tumultuous relationship with his guardian (and perhaps more), the cruel and compelling Earl of Tyne. Conceived out of wedlock in the commission of a terrible crime, Edward grows to be a spirited and capital-r Romantic young man to whom every bad thing in the universe seems to happen in rapid succession (benevolent kidnapping, less-than-benevolent kidnapping, thrashings aplenty, hazing, imprisonment in a priest hole, brain fever…); the Earl is a bitter Byronic freethinker whose titles and privileges can’t make up for the deep wounds of his past. The two of them end up in a battle of wills that only intensifies as Edward grows older, but its romantic and sexual dimensions likewise intensify and grow even more complex. The foreword of my copy describes the novel as follows: This is the story of the tortured, inextricably entwined lives of the Earl of Tyne and his illegitimate, unacknowledged son, Edward. A deep bond of affection existed between father and son... and though Edward frequently suffered violence and imprisonment at the hands of the Earl, a physical love which could not be denied finally overwhelmed them and threatened to shatter their lives… Yes, ellipses and all. You probably know already if this novel is likely to be your thing, but to sweeten the pot it includes revenge plots, the fallout of shitty libertine life choices, poetry, Methodism, lots of duels, a detailed description of snuff-taking, plucky girls dressed as boys, a cameo by Beau Brummell… basically, a lot. At the time it was published, it seems to have been understood as a romance novel much like Lolah Burford’s other extremely-consent-issues-happy historical fiction, but it’s about as different from a modern historical romance novel as chalk from cheese. Edward has other love interests along the way (including a dreamy revolutionary boyfriend in college, a glamorous courtesan, and a nervy Regency waif) but there is a lot of dark, brooding, can’t-stand-each-other-can’t-stay-away-from-each-other action between father and son to go around. The novel is ~564 pages in hardcover, about ~252k words in fic terms. As you may have guessed, this novel features incest front and center, as well as a significant amount of dubious consent, sexual assault, physical whump, and parental abuse. (It also features an interlude of supposedly benevolent but still grimace-worthy anti-Romani racism.) If you need more specific content notes or spoilers, let me know. This novel is the most. It is the absolute most. It is the only thing I’ve ever read that ever made me feel like I was perched on a sofa in a smoky fire-lit room reading a scandalous novel in secret, even though I bought it with my own hard-earned money and was reading it in January of 2020. I wouldn’t say that it’s a gothic novel in the sense that 18th century gothic novels are gothic — not enough Catholicism for that, alas — but it’s gothic like a highbrow V.C. Andrews novel — absolutely dripping in astonishing operatic twists and interludes, sexual transgression, family tragedy, and dark secrets. The author (a scholar of 18th century literature) absolutely piled in her research shamelessly and delightfully, and I suspect her other novel Vice Avenged is basically fix-it fic for Georgette Heyer’s novels not having enough dubcon in them for her youthful liking. WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: The novel is out of print in a major way; second-hand copies are available on places like Bookfinder. However, an ebook copy is readily available on at least one file-sharing site focused on books.

The R.M.S. Titanic sank on a moonless night in April 1912—but the sky wasn’t completely dark. Instead, the Northern Lights shimmered green overhead.

Formed when the charged particles of a particularly strong solar storm hit Earth’s magnetic field, exciting oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere, the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, illuminate the sky in a stunning display of swirling colors.

As Mindy Weisberger reports for Live Science, the solar storms responsible for this light show can disrupt magnetic signals and radio waves. Such interference, argues independent Titanic researcher Mila Zinkova in a newly published paper, may have contributed to the luxury liner’s untimely demise.

Writing in the journal Weather, Zinkova outlines evidence linking the Titanic’s sinking to the celestial lights. Among other factors, she points out that the solar storm’s charged particles could have thrown off the ship’s compass, placing it on a collision course with the iceberg widely blamed for the disaster.

“Even if the compass moved only one degree, it already could have made a difference,” Zinkova, who is a retired computer programmer, tells Hakai magazine’s Chris Baraniuk.

“There was no moon, but the Aurora Borealis glimmered like moonbeams shooting up from the northern horizon,” wrote James Bisset, an officer stationed on the Carpathia, of the night of April 14.

James Bisset, an officer assigned to the R.M.S. Carpathia, which rescued 705 survivors from the sinking Titanic, described the April 14 light show in his logbook.

“There was no moon, but the Aurora Borealis glimmered like moonbeams shooting up from the northern horizon,” he wrote, as quoted by Live Science.

Five hours later, Bisset added that he could see “greenish beams” as the ship approached the Titanic’s lifeboats.

Another witness of the night’s events, survivor Lawrence Beesley, later noted that the aurora borealis’ glow “arched fanwise across the northern sky, with faint streamers reaching toward the Pole-star.”

According to NASA, solar storms known as coronal mass ejections send a wave of electrified particles into space. When Earth is caught in the wave, the charged particles travel along the planet’s magnetic field, interacting with oxygen, which produces red and green light, and nitrogen, which generates blue and purple light.

The planet’s magnetic field protects Earth from most solar storms’ effects. But severe space weather can still interfere with magnetic equipment like compasses, as well as the electrical grid and space traffic, reports Caroline Delbert for Popular Mechanics. Today, some people store precious digital records in Faraday cages to protect them from electromagnetic pulses.

Zinkova suggests that a solar storm may have pulled the Titanic’s compass needle in the wrong direction, steering the ship off course. If the Carpathia’s compass was similarly affected, she argues in the paper, the interference may have inadvertently guided the steamer to survivors, making up for the fact that the original SOS signal had directed the Titanic’s rescuer to a spot almost seven miles away from its actual location.

The study also posits that the solar storm affected the Titanic’s radio transmissions. The nearby La Provence didn’t pick up the Titanic’s signal, according to Hakai, and the Mount Temple’s responses never reached the sinking ship.

Speaking with Hakai, historian Tim Maltin, who has previously studied the impact of optical illusions on the collision, says he agrees that a solar storm probably occurred on April 14, 1912.

But, he adds, “I think it was not a significant factor” in the disaster.

A 1912 Congressional investigation attributed the sinking to failures of ship design and crew protocol, as well as amateur radio enthusiasts jamming the airwaves used by professional ships. In response, the legislative body passed the Radio Act of 1912, which required all radio operators to hold a federal license, ensured ships stayed on alert for distress signals and limited the frequencies available for use by amateurs.

I’m almost done with The Little Stranger and I wanna finish so I can watch the film because....I have a feeling it might better handle some of the pacing things I didn’t care for in the book. And going by the trailer the film has like...NAILED the atmosphere I imagined in the book. Even tho I feel like the Dr. Faraday and Caroline Ayres casting choices are...too pretty.
