Your bad day has been utterly forgotten. 

It’s not incredibly hard for them to cheer you up, Logan and Wade have learned. You’re so rarely sad that it’s hardly an issue anyway, but all they really need to do is redirect your energy into something else. A distraction to take your mind off of whatever’s gotten under your skin.  

There’s a little carnival that’s set up near the apartment. One of those ones which is constantly on the move, overcharges for everything, and is exactly the kind of place you love. So it was a no-brainer to take you there for the evening. 

Logan bought you a necklace made of hard candies, Wade took you on all the rollercoasters which were definitely not safe but you screamed with joy while riding. You’d insisted all three of you squeezed into a boat through the tunnel of love, and they’d come out the other side with your lipstick all over their faces, you smugly sandwiched between them. 

And through the evening you’ve been fucking jubilant. Your laughter rolls like thunder, but the kind which means a storm is going to clear out the oppressive atmosphere of a muggy day. A sweet, loud kind of laughter which peals from your very soul. Wade and Logan catch each other’s eye as you absolutely decimate a stick of neon blue cotton candy: they’ve done well. 

The three of you are preparing to go home when something catches your eye, slowing you to a stop as you stare. It’s a prize booth - the kind where you have to knock over a tower of tin cans to win. Hanging from the rafters are huge plushies of your favourite animal. 

“C’mon baby, you know these games are rigged,” Logan sighs, aware he’s marching into a losing battle. You lick the sugar off of your fingers and dump the wooden stick into a garbage bin, eyes wide in the fluorescent lights of the bumper cars nearby. 

“Aww… but they’re so cute…” you sigh, looking really disappointed. 

Well, neither of them are ones to let that happen, so Logan and Wade find themselves speaking in unison when they say: “I’ll win you one.”

They exchange a look and you grin. Oh. This has become a challenge, and both are too stubborn to back down. Together they step up to the counter, each slamming five dollars down and making the poor teenager manning the booth jump. 

“Uh, okay, you have two balls and need to knock the whole tower—”

The teen doesn’t even get a chance to finish their explanation before Logan has launched one of the pathetic beanbags at the cans with such force that it crumples a couple of them in half. They’re cleared off completely in one hit. The attendant can only gawp as he smugly points to one of the huge plushies which is dutifully fetched. You let out a little woop of joy as he passes it into your arms, giving Wade a look which says beat that. 

Wade hums, throwing the beanbag up and down in his hand, testing its weight. 

“Okay, well, not all of us are barbarians who need to use brute strength to compensate for our advanced age. It’s all about the finesse, pookie.”

Wade angles his throw so it bounces off the side wall, clearing all of the cans but one. Logan lets out a smug huff. Wade frowns. 

“Hey, look, is that Spiderman doing full-frontal nudity?” he says, pointing into the distance, distracting the teen with one hand while he whips out a knife with the other and skewers the can to the back of the booth. 

“Prize please!” he says when they turn back, turning pale at the sight of what’s been done to their game. They pass him another plushie from the roof with shaking hands, and Wade presents it to you with a flourish. 

“That was cheating,” Logan states as the three of you walk away.

“Uh, I cleared the cans, old man. No cheating about it.”

“You had a second ball to throw,” you point out, and Wade pauses. 

“Do you want the toy or not, sweetcheeks?”

And that is how you find yourself more stuffed animal than human, waddling out of the carnival with a huge smile and arms full of polyester. The whole thing is sort of ridiculous but, honestly, if you’re smiling? Logan and Wade can agree it’s totally worth it.

- Suddenly, your eyes catch Charlie's, her giving you a sweet smile, your conversation forgotten, the both of you too lost in the others eyes to keep it going

- Almost as if you both were thinking the same thing, your eyes darted down to her curled lips, wondering how they would feel against yours

- You both looked back up at each other, and slowly leaned in. Just before you kissed, your lips brush against each other, you hesitating to lean fully in.

Vaggie

- The extermination was coming up, and you were struggling a little with the actual fighting but refused to just stay inside the hotel during it, wanting to fight alongside your girlfriend

- And she appreciated it, and seeing the determination to learn how to fight the angels burn in your eyes made her feel nostalgic in a way

- And so, your training began! She took you to a quieter part of the land outside of the hotel, away from the cannibals that were still training

- She gave you a small selection of blades to choose from, all of which were made of angelic steel, supplied by Carmilla Carmine (Carbine?). As you looked through the weapons, you decided on [y/w] (your weapon) and raised it up to Vaggie. She nodded, then put the rest of the weapons away, then started explaining the best ways to use your weapon

- As she explained, she did a few examples, and answered any questions you had as you went. Eventually, she handed you the weapon, then asked you to do a simple attack. And you did pretty good! Vaggie gave you a small clap, very proud of her girlfriend. She asked you to do a more difficult attack, but not much harder than the first one. You did okay, just needed to adjust some of your posture

- She walked over to you and started adjusting your posture, nudging your foot to the side, adjusting your hold, then her hands went to your waist

- Vaggie didn't even realize where her hands were until you went stiff, then she looked up at your tinted cheeks and realized what happened

- She almost removed her hands from your waist until you muttered a small "w-wait.." and she also went stiff

- You gently drop the angelic weapon on the ground, then put your hands on her shoulders. A blush creeped on her face as well, realizing how close you both were.

- Vaggie's eyes dart down to your lips, then back up to your eyes, when she realized that your eyes were also looking at her lips

- She smirked slightly, then brought a hand up to brush your hair away from your eyes, her other hand going to the small of your back to pull you in closer to her.

- As she tucked your hair behind your ear, she leaned in slightly, tilting her head. As you got on, your blush became deeper, but you still tilted your head to the side, then your lips finally meet

- As soon as it begins, it ends. A small peck, but it spoke a thousand words from Vaggie. "I will protect you, because I'll be your armor." <3

Niffty (nifty?)

- You both had been working hard recently, more shipments are being made, gathering the angelic steel from around the pentagram, and lots of paperwork that needed to be done

- You both could feel your backs dying as they hunched over those mounds of paperwork, however your saving graces showed up from a weapons delivery. Clara and Odette (Carmilla's daughters if you didn't know, I sure didn't) opened the doors to Carmilla's office, and tisking at the tiredness in both yours and their mother's eyes.

- That's how you both got kicked out of your own home and forced into a reservation at a nice restaurant lmao

- You both enjoyed your time there, finally relaxing, letting your hair down (OUT FOR LOVEEE) and joking around. Now, on the way home you held each other's hands, talking about how you needed to pay back Clara and Odette for their kindness in getting you out of the house and taking care of the paper work

- As you both returned, you were giggling happily after a story you told from when you were alive. You entered the front door holding onto each other as you hunched over, holding your stomachs from how much you were laughing.

- You both felt so relaxed, especially you, who had some wine at the restaurant and was feeling less shy about showing Camilla affection, and it showed.

- Your giggles died down as you both looked at each other, slowly leaning, and sharing your first kiss.

- As you part, a blush crosses both of your faces and you look away shyly

- Around the corner, Clara and Odette were silently cheering and giving each pats on the back for their perfect set up

The Dark, Twisted Tragedy Of Queen Nehelenia

While I really like Queen Nehelenia as the Evil Queen/Maleficent hybrid incarnation of nightmares and darkness from Takeuchi's work, I still gotta give credit to the 90's Toei SuperS anime incarnation of the queen, who was every bit as malevolent and frightening but, with the alterations made to her, is also layered and so damn fascinating on top of that, and I find the tragedy of her character arc to be so heartrending, so disturbing, so haunting, that I had to post about it. Disclaimer: this is purely about Queen Nehelenia from the Dream Arc covered in Sailor Moon SuperS, not the one from the Nightmare Arc of Sailor Moon Stars, which does not exist for me

The backstory for Queen Nehelenia in this series is that she comes from "the other side of the Moon", really a small asteroid that orbited Earth's moon. She was so renowned and adored for her ravishing beauty by all the other inhabitants of this dominion that she was made the ruler of the colony kingdom formerd there, a kingdom with a bright, colorful party/carnival theme to it. The young queen was praised 24/7 for how beautiful she was and routinely spoiled by her rettainers with parties and gift giving in her honor. As you'd expect, this made her very vain, sheltered and flighty, but she was far from a bad person. She actually seems quite sweet, generous and demure, more of a Snow White than a Queen Grimhilde. However, one of the gifts she was given was a very particular...shall we say magic mirror.

And since the mirror was believed to be magic, she does the whole "mirror mirror" thing and wishes to see her future, wishes to know that she is still beautiful and loved by all for many years to come. But instead, a haggard, wrinkled, hideously worn face emerges from the darkness behind the looking glass. In retrospect, we can classify this as the original Zirconia, the first distorted reflection of Nehelenia.

Not only is Nehelenia's reflection aged and hideous, but she begins to see the room around her changing to how it would look years in the future, decaying and full of cobwebs threaded across everything. Upon realizing that the ugly old hag in the mirror is her reflection and is representative of her in the far future, Nehelenia freaks out and has a nervous breakdown as she then starts hearing the voice of the hag in the mirror speaking to her: "Always remember not to forget, a child's dream is a dream that they should never get." Over and over.

Now what I find so sad about this is that what I believe is really going on here is that the mirror, though cursed and twisted by evil power, is displaying to the young queen the worst possible version of her future; a future where her dream, to stay beautiful and loved by all forever, fails to come true. It's not a future that's absolutely set in stone, but it's a possible future should Nehelenia set her life down a certain course. The words she hears, the "Always remember not to forget..." rhyme, are telling her that if she, growing up from childhood into adulthood, does not grow up her dream along with herself, instead clinging to the exact same dream she had as a child, then that very dream will be unattainable. Which makes sense seeing as you cannot fight or stop aging, it happens to everyone. Perhaps if Nehelenia found a new, more feasible dream to work towards, it would make her happy and she'd not age as poorly as what the reflection showed her. But instead, Nehelenia just stood in front of the mirror for longer periods, watching her reflection go from young to old to back young again to back old again to young again, and it entranced her, misleading her mind and corrupting her heart, the darkness of the mirror and her own heart's darkness becoming one.

From Queen Nehelenia's spirit bonding with the mirror, Zirconias are created. Yes, Zirconias. Malformations of Nehelenia's soul made to ressemble her worst nightmare, distorted to look even freakier than the initital old crone reflection did. The Zirconia that ran the Dead Moon Circus for her is merely one that she was able to let loose from her later mirror prison and was given sentience of her own. In the finale we even see a new Zirconia be spawned from right out of her!

YIKES.

So Nehelenia allowed her kingdom to decay into the exact sort of cobweb covered ruin that she saw that day, all while using the magic she acquired from the mirror to rip the dream mirrors from all of her subjects and servants, consuming their dreams for herself, which makes their souls spontaneously waste away and their forms change into sideshow freaks - "the living corpses of her people" as Nehelenia refers to them. The asteroid was no longer a dark moon - it was now a Dead Moon. And that is how the Dead Moon Circus came to be.

But there were only so many dreams to feed off of, and they alone would not sustain Nehelenia's dream for eternity. This got her to turn her attention back to the place she'd always envied, the White Moon Kingdom of Silver Millennium. That kingdom's queen, Serenity, was actually physically ageless thanks to the power of her Silver Crystal, and her kingdom had always been more prosperous than the Dead Moon's shabbier tent-filled colony. Queen Nehelenia began coveting Queen Serenity's position, kingdom, and crystal. If she could usurp her as Queen of the Moon, she could become a goddess-like ruler who could scour the galaxy for more beautiful dreams and with her power dominate the entire universe so that all its inhabitants would be made to worship her and adore her for her everlasting beauty. So she traveled to the realm of Elysian (shown to be a physical planet in the anime, so we know Nehelenia has the ability to voyage to other worlds at this time) in hopes she could obtain the Silver Crystal's counterpart, the Golden Crystal, held by Elysian's guardian Helios, which would grant her the power to overtake Serenity. Helios allowed her within its reach, but the crystal sensed her dark intentions and repelled her with golden flames, rejecting her as its master. Cast out for the darkness of her heart, a furious Queen Nehelenia embraced this identity as a "queen of darkness" and attempted to invade the White Moon with her own dark powers. It did not go so well for her. She was sealed away into her own magic mirror and cast off into a dreamscape when the New Moon (a lunar eclipse) came around.

We know the rest. As the dreamscape is tied to Elysian, Nehelenia was able to conquer Elysian and corrupt it into a state of decay and misery plagued by nightmares. Helios' spirit left his body and fled to Earth in the form of a pegasus. And during a solar eclipse, the Dead Moon was able to travel to Earth and set up their circus there to do their wicked queen's bidding. From here Queen Nehelenia is played up as a straightforward sinister villain until Helios is back in his original body in Episode 37. Helios simply gives the queen a fierce, judgmental yet pitying look just like he gave her on the day she failed to take the Golden Crystal and Nehelenia has a panic attack over it, and during this we see wrinkles beginning to form under her eyes. This gives extra incentive for Nehelenia to seemingly kill Helios as she rips the Golden Crystal from off his head, and enjoys doing so.

Then there's the "Zirconia as Nehelenia's reflection" reveal. Zirconia and Nehelenia were two sides of the same coin; Zirconia saw her beautiful queen as her fondest dream, while Nehelenia looked at her servant as her worst nightmare, her appearance and voice always disgusting Nehelenia, so she takes great pleasure in doing away with the crone. One hand of Nehelenia comes out from the mirror, and Zirconia's hand starts to glow. Nehelenia's full body comes out, Zirconia's body starts glowing. As Nehelenia fully emerges, Zirconia vanishes. The dark queen is finally free, with Golden Crystal in hand.

During this time, the sky over Tokyo has been darkened by the New Moon, more Dead Moon Circus tents have invaded, citizens who had their dreams stolen have turned into zombie husks, and there are cobwebs. covering. the whole place! Once again bears a striking resemblance to the young Nehelenia's mirror-induced nightmare...

Sure enough, as Nehelenia is blasted with the radiant power of the Golden Crystal, it wears away at her until the physical image of her dream fades and she's exposed for what she truly always was by this point in time - the hideous old hag she saw in the mirror all those years ago. Her pink-toned skin had already gone pale, but now it looks a pale shade of purple. Yes, she looks exactly like Zirconia!

What Nehelenia fails to realize is that she made herself this way. In clinging so desparately to her own would-be eternal dream from her youth, a dream that bases her entire self worth and right to exist on keeping her youth and beauty, in order to prevent the future she saw in the mirror from coming to pass to the point where she'd steal away the dreams of others and leave terrible nightmares in her wake, Nehelenia self-fulfilled the mirror's prophecy. She created the dark environment she'd been surrounded by during her breakdown. She became the wretched old monster that had disgusted and disturbed her so badly. And because of this, she gave up looking for any sort of happiness that did not concern her looks and her childish dream. She isolated herself, wallowed in lonelinesss and succumbed to bitter malice, hatred, and insanity. Queen Nehelenia believes the very idea of losing what she'd cherished the most grants her liscence to embrace nihilism, to lash out in wrath towards others and care for no one but herself and her own dream that she wished so badly could be everlasting. She feared the flow of time and the changes of life, so she preferred to retreat from any reality where she is not a youthful, beautiful, majestic and powerful goddess among all women. She is the living embodiment of childish self-absorption and nihilism, stuck on her own vanity and willfully stagnating in internal growth.

But as Usagi told directly to the face of this cautionary tale, "I'm not like you." Usagi sees her own cherished thing, her "dream" in the form of her future daughter, ripped away from her right before her eyes when Nehelenia throws the child off the levitating, crumbling palace. But rather than give into despair, loneliness, envy and hateful rage like Nehelenia hopes she will, Usagi takes a dive right after Chibi Usa, still willing to fight for the best possible future she knows is possible (Crystal Tokyo) rather than be overcome by dread of the worst possible future to the point of losing herself along with her care for others. Nehelenia is unable to do this. She is internally broken well past the point where she is capable of doing this. So while Sailor Moon dives towards a scary reality with an uncertain future, Queen Nehelenia retreats from it, willingly sealing herself back into her mirror as it's lifted up towards the New Moon. She is condemned to a lonesome eternity in complete darkness, stuck in a limited, stagnant space within the mirror with nothing and no one around her but her own self and her dream. But hey, she has her dream. She's got her youthful good looks, her precious beauty. She's all alone with just her dream of everlasting beauty, and that's just what she wants, right? She's happy this way! Happy ending....right??? And so vanishes the queen into the blackness of the New Moon, never to be seen again.

Always remember not to forget, not to let dream become delusion instead. Because otherwise, you end up like Queen Nehelenia.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack originated as a Angelic shapeshifter. He was made to be a “imaginary friend” to help sad and terminally children. Used to make children happy or enjoy their last moments. He was fairly weak during this period of time, feeding off the little emotions around him.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Although due to being trapped in his box for years due to Isaac leaving he began loosing his colour due to his box feeding off Isaac’s mothers negativity. And eventually watching Isaac torture people he was corrupted. LJ lost his colour turning him monochrome, and his body began only feeding off the negativity and souls that were in the house. Due to this he was corrupted and ended up turning into a demonic creature instead of an angelic creature.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack is a shapeshifter and has multiple different forms he takes. One of those forms being “Laughing Jill”, I personally headcanon them being the same person. He also will occasionally shift into child like versions of both of his forms, along with turning into animals for convenience. He’s Genderfluid!

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack doesn’t kill children. He doesn’t believe children deserve to suffer. Although he kidnaps children after killing their abusive parents. He typically takes the children and drops them off in completely different states, and sometimes different countries in hopes that they’ll have a better life. Sure it’s strange but he just wants to help children get better.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jacks box is what keeps him alive, it’s like his soul to him. He often keeps it safe with Sally whenever he’s not helping another child. He can morph it into different things as well. He turns it into a small necklace for Sally to wear, Sally also feeds off of the energy from the Box to have a physical form; so without LJs box she wouldn’t be able to touch anything. If his Box is broken he’ll die with it.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Speaking of Sally. Laughing Jack adopted her almost immediately after they met. He felt bad for her due to her situation and promised he’d help and protect her. They’ve got a Father Daughter bound.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 The inside of Laughing Jacks box is like a huge carnival! It used to be colourful but unfortunately it lost all of its colour when he was corrupted. Although LJ is a Kleptomaniac and often steals things from his victims. He also has a compulsive hoarding addiction so his carnival is a mess.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack claims to be Pansexual but in reality he isn’t really attracted to people. He often finds himself accepting dates just for convenience and too have fun. Never being fully interested in people. He’s too busy being a Dad to care about others

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack sees nearly everything in black and white, although he sees the colour red. He’s often fascinated by anything red and will gravitate towards it to check it out. Due to this Him and my OC ARK have a fairly confusing relationship. LJ with randomly touch his hair and he’ll panic.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack often doesn’t understand personal space. He finds himself leaning against people and using them as shoulder rests. Or getting in their face without realizing.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack can sense people’s emotions and will often make his body admit certain pheromones to cheer people up or to make them feel other emotions.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack has a never ending pocket that he keeps candies and small toys in. Often handing them out to the people around him. If you need a fidget toy just ask him and he’ll give you one! He often will drug the insomniacs with melatonin candies just to get them to sleep.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack is only at the mansion due to Sally enjoying it. If Sally wasn’t with him he would continue to do his own work alone.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 Laughing Jack can teleport, along with being telepathic. He knows almost everything and it’s scary.

ᯓ ᡣ𐭩 If Laughing Jack finds a love interest (although it’s very unlikely he would) he’d be obsessed with them and grow very clingy of them. He’d honestly do anything for his partner. Also he’s one loyal MF…

Women In Anime

I came across this tweet a few days back, and did give it a response on Twitter back then, but I keep thinking about it, so I wanted to bring a longer discussion here.

I think hating that anime ends up a male dominated industry is totally fair, I think that hating that men end up bringing a lot of negative stereotypes and tropes and whatnot is valid.

There's a mountain of problems with men in the industry, and just the industry in general. But there's also a problem with the awareness of the NA community. Scrolling about the quote tweets and replies, it's probably one in ten responses at best, that show an opening that's actually from a woman.

Hate like this ends up performative, and targeted at the most negative aspects, rather than being used as a tool to shine a light on the people that deserve it. Directionless and generalized points like this do nothing, and in the end can actually take away from uplifting the voices and talents that they should be.

So, I wanted to bring a list of ten women in anime that have worked on openings over the years.

Karneval OP - Satou Akira

Openings that really cut deep into the core of a series can be a little hard to come by sometimes. I think a lot of openings get suckered into "looking cool" and tend to neglect their creative ability to depict something deeper within. Satou Akira falls into no such trap with Karneval, providing an incredibly strong opening that consistently relays several themes to the viewers through its visuals of things like, well, carnivals, for one. Also included is clock faces, butterflies, gears, and a few other pieces. It's really great work, so it's a shame that they haven't returned to the role since then.

They have, however, been in some pretty impressive roles elsewhere. For example, their biggest role was boarding for the second Fate/Grand Order Camelot movie. Important to note that it's the second movie, and not the first, as the second movie is considerably better.

Akira is still only reaching the tip of the iceberg though, as they recently were the lead director on Ao Ashi, and are being tapped for the Kinnukuman anime in 2024. They certainly have a good relationship with Production I.G, so I'm really hopeful to continue to see them on future projects with the studio.

Skip and Loafer OP - Deai Kotomi

Yeah, it hurts my soul to have different embeds, but I've had to source some of these OPs as they don't exist on YouTube.

Anyways, Deai Kotomi definitely had her limelight moment this year with Skip and Loafer and it's very fun and energetic opening. It's a great reflection of the characters and story, which really highlights Kotomi's understanding and ability to work with the content of the series. She did an absolutely wonderful job leading the production of Skip and Loafer, but I think a lot of people don't know about her history and connection. I mean, the reason she's following up Akira and Karneval is because Kotomi actually did the ending for Karneval! Really cool little piece to learn.

Make no mistake though, this isn't Kotomi's first rodeo, it's just the one she's most known for. But man, does she have a good history. Starting off with assistant direction credits for Kids on the Slope and the first season of Silver Spoon, she then moves on to helm the follow up season of Silver Spoon, and take over for Natsume's Book of Friends.

Though with the new season of Natsume's Book of Friends I'm a little sad to see Kotomi relieved of the role as the Chief Director for the series, Hideki Itou, steps into the role. Still have high hopes, but was looking forward to more Kotomi. Just means I need to wait and see where she ends up next, and I highly doubt it'll take too long for her to appear once more.

Sk8 The Infinity OP - Hiroko Utsumi

Speaking of people that I can't wait to see more of Hiroko Utsumi. I'm sure everyone that's seen it is a fan of Sk8 The Infinity and its opening, and there's not really a better person to handle the opening that Utsumi herself. After all, she's the original creator for the series.

But let's rewind a little before I get ahead of myself. Utsumi has probably one of the most prestigious careers on this list. Utsumi originally started with KyoAni, working her way up from second key animation to first key animation, to episode direction and storyboarding, finally making their directorial debut with Free! back in 2013, quickly following it up with the sequel.

Interestingly enough though, Utsumi then goes silent for 2 years before re-appearing outside of KyoAni, doing some storyboarding work with Bones and Mappa, leading into the next crazy piece of her story: the lead director of Banana Fish. Then of course it's to Sk8 The Infinity, and now she has Bucchigiri?! on the horizon, as well as a continuation of Sk8 The Infinity.

Talk about a career with no misses. Even better is that with her new works, we'll almost certainly be getting more of her expert openings, as with every series she's directed, she's also done the openings. So really, lots and lots to look forward to with Utsumi.

Arakawa Under The Bridge OP - Yamamoto Sayo

I know, not the opening that most would pick, but I wanted to be ✨Different✨. Everybody surely knows Yamamoto Sayo from Yuuri!! on Ice, but I just wanted to show off a bit more of a her range with an opening like this one. Clearly, she's a very talented woman, and the industry recognizes that with her work as she's done quite a few openings, especially with Mappa as of late.

These are all of her openings (and some endings), in order of appearance: Rozen Maiden Traumend, Michiko and Hacchin, Arakawa Under The Bridge S1 & S2, Hanamaru Kindergarten (ED), Attack on Titan S1 (ED), Space Dandy S1 (ED), Yuri On Ice, Kakegurui, and Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul.

Quite the list, to be sure. I just wish they did more direction work, as they've been stuck at Mappa for the Yuuri!! on Ice movie. Hopefully that'll come out some day and Sayo will be free of that hell, but all we can do is sit and wait.

Kaguya-Sama: Love is War - Ultra Romantic OP - Eiko Hirayama

I mean, it's Kaguya-Sama, do I really need to say more? Great effort, and great direction from Hirayama here to really cap off the best season of the series. But did you know that she also did the work for the first opening of Love is War?

Hirayama is probably the most curious staff member on this list though. They do have a good few credits for various openings, but by and large they're all special or visual effects credits. For example, they most recently did the visual effects in the opening for the Nier anime, and they also did the same for 2 of the Vivy openings.

I think it's really interesting to see someone like Hirayama step out of their comfort zone to do something like an opening, because you can absolutely feel their experience shape the opening.

Here, let me add a little breakdown of the opening for Kaguya S3. If you pay close attention to the opening, you'll realize that there's not a crazy amount of animation. Rather, there's a lot of camera and 3 dimensional movement, and a lot of interesting composition. I mean, just look at the sequence of Kaguya running, it's a compositor's dream as they shift through all sorts of different visuals and styles.

And I just think that's really cool. Sure, Hirayama isn't a thoroughbred director like the others on this list, but I think their storied experience with composition gives them an angle in this opening that a lot of others just wouldn't find.

Heike Monogatari OP - Naoko Yamada

Naoko, alongside her work with Heike Monogatari, will always have a special place in my heart. Much like Utsumi, Naoko started her career with KyoAni. However, she was a part of the studio for longer, and because of that, was present during the arson attack on the studio in 2019.

This opening, and really the entirety of this story, hits really close to home with its ideas of the loss of family and suffering through a cycle of violence, and she does a beautiful job of juxtaposing that idea against the pieces that Biwa fondly remembers of those around her. It's very, very strong work from Naoko that feels almost like a rebirth as her first major work following the arson attack.

Regardless of what she went through at the end, her time with KyoAni was incredibly impressive. I'm not sure how many will know her name from it, but she was the director behind the incredible success of K-On!. Similarly, she also worked on Tamako Market and the follow up movie. She's an incredibly talented woman, and has continually put her best foot forward with everything she's done, so I'm really hopeful to see her continue that hot streak with wherever she goes next.

Naruto Shippuden OP20 - Chiaki Kon

Had to bring a bit more of a classic pick out, no? Chiaki Kon is certainly not a staff member that tends to really be seen as someone popular, if that makes sense. They're rather light in terms of individual expression, so having a stronger opening like this that hones in on individual character arcs while relating them to larger interactions within the world is really great to see.

Though that's not to say that Chiaki tends to get lost as a staff member, but that I think her work is very subtle. For example, she directed the recent (and popular) Sacrificial Princess anime, which is one of J.C Staff's top 3 anime in the last 5 years. It undoubtedly has Chiaki to thank for a lot of that, where she's kept a reasonable distance on the project while still providing a lot of her overarching vision to it.

But man, has she been active lately. While she does do lead direction, she's insanely present as an episode director and storyboarder, getting anywere from 6 to even 12 or more episodes boarded and/or directed in a year. Odds are if you watch any amount of anime, you've seen an episode done by Chiaki Kon.

Given OP - Hikaru Yamaguchi

Maybe a bit of an odd choice, but I feel like that makes it all the better to give them some spotlight. Not everyone is going to be a "knock it out of the park anime rockstar", and that's perfectly fine. Though I might still argue that Yamaguchi fits that bill. It's just that they're not as productive as others on this list.

After all, they did the OP for Given and directed the series (as well as the movie), and it's a very good show. It's interesting though how long it took her to get another lead direction role. There was 3 years between the Given movie, and the Osomatusu-San movie that she directed in 2023. And you might be thinking, "well hey, what about smaller roles to fill the gap?". Nope, not really any of that.

There was a 2 year gap between the Given movie and her next staff position. Though I mean, it's a pretty damn cool one. She did the storyboard for episode 3 of Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War. For those that don't know, that's the episode of Ichigo vs Quilge Opie (which was very cool, by the way).

Yamaguchi is certainly an interesting staff member in that regard, as she doesn't have many projects she's worked on, but they've almost all been very big name ones. Certainly has me curious to see what she'll manage to appear on next.

Dance Dance Danseur OP - Sarisa Kawamura

If you thought Kawaguchi was an odd pick, wait until you hear about Kawamura. This is the second ever credit for her that I've been able to track down. The other comes from VFX assistant role on the Undead Girl Murder farce ending. So you can imagine my surprise considering the insane quality and creativity displayed with this opening that she boarded for.

I mean, when I first watched it when the anime aired, I was stunned. Absolutely incredible work with the first person perspective and the ideas with all the reflections and the wild expressiveness of the characters. Seriously, this was a shoe-in for opening of the year back in 2022, and I'd still say one of the standouts in this decade for sure.

I just, really, really hope that we'll see Kawamura board something else soon, because I absolutely need more of her incredible vision.

And that's the end of the 10 women, that I chose to use for this list. Seriously, there's a mountain of them that have done all sorts of other openings, or endings, and an unimaginable amount that have done creative work outside of those things.

I wouldn't say I'm disappointed that nobody talks about anime staff (in general, really, but also more specifically women), but a lot of people just don't have the interest in looking this stuff up. I really, really wish that streaming services would start translating credits to make it easier for people to get a grasp of who it is that's working on their favorite series, but we can't always rely on companies to do things like that.

Thankfully, the community out there is really, really dedicated so you can find staff credits on websites like MAL, Anilist, Anidb, and even Anime News Network. Sure, it takes a little bit of time to go and find those credits, but I think it's really valuable time that's well spent. You're bringing more awareness and understanding into the hobby and community, and that can change the trajectory of it in really wonderful ways.

Highlighting the works of women in anime is just one way of doing that. It inspires people in the community, it makes people aware of the idea of who is making their favorite works, that women are a central and pivotal part of the industry.

I really hope that people found out something cool with this list, and I really do encourage everyone to do a bit of digging into their favorite series to find out the names behind them. I mean, we all know who directs a movie or TV series over here, and we certainly know all about the actors and whatnot, so I'd love to see people bring that same understanding to anime.

namely: saifah is right. the first 72 hours are the most important, as long as you're resting it, keeping it elevated, icing it, compressing it, you'll be all good to walk on it in no time. after that, you need to make sure you're still taking care of it, like by wearing a compression sock all the time, and not walking on it too much if it starts hurting, stuff like that. that's the part I didnt do. I took care of it for three days, then kept walking on it like nothing happened, and it's still really painful sometimes, it never properly healed, but like it's fine im surviving

My Summary: SAD ENDING, the only fic to ever capture what childhood feels like, I cried over this and I Never cry over anything wow, one of those fics you are forever changed by, I felt hollowed out, like someone scooped out my insides, also has some of the most beautiful verses I’ve ever read in fic, unbearably beautiful and beautifully unbearable

My Summary: I always have such a difficult time summarizing longer fics, because so much happens over the course of them, but take my word for it this long-fic is worth it! A classic for a reason

fake married... with huey back, one could say a sorcerer is no longer needed, but the harem couldn't disagree more. to keep eiden with them, each and every single one of them claims to have some tie to him. so many fake husbands. rei's experimentation actually required some more elaborate soul/essence binding to work which could be considered actual marriage in nucarni world, but upon reading through the rough documentation, huey deems it not valid to keep eiden after all and sends him back to his own world. sad times all around

2.1. favorite non-belcher character (and why)?

I'm gonna class teddy as a belcher here otherwise it's gonna be an obvious answer asdfghjkl. Man this is HARD, I like so many for very different reasons. Honestly it might be Zeke or Tami, which I never expected! I absolutely adore Tammy's phrases (Tammyisms? Lmao), like "snorgasm", "boob punch", "crap attack" - if anyone has a list of them all please may I have it🙏 - I also love how emotionally intelligent Tammy can be (a detailed explanation here). As for Zeke, pretty similar reasons! Zeke's relationship with Jimmy Jr is one I find really interesting. Zeke is obsessed with wrestling/fighting like a Typical Lad™ however, he also pushes J-Ju to be more emotionally literate. For example S9E3 Tweentrepreneurs;

J-Ju: one day Zeke wasn't around and I was bored

Zeke: lonely?

J-Ju: no, more bored

Zeke: sad?

J-Ju: no, bored!

Emotional illiteracy causes the inability to understand one's own emotions, listen to others, as well as empathising with their emotional stages. Thus often leading to decreased engagement with reality, resulting in boredom. Here we see Zeke teaching J-Ju new ways of describing how he (Jimmy Jr) may feel when he (Zeke) isn't around. Encouraging emotional literacy and in turn encouraging emotional responses to reality, a pattern which with consistency can prevent 'emotional stagnation' that can manifest as boredom! Whilst Zeke probably wouldn't be able to explain what he's doing, the fact he has the recognition of when to do it is an incredible skill for a 13 year old!

2.2. What’s your favorite episode and why?

So this is the question that's taken my days to answer this. I could not decide at ALL. But I think I have finally landed on S13E16 What a (April) Fool Believes! As for why, the first and foremost reason is the sheer happiness I get from hearing Bob finally day 'got you Mr Fischoeder!". There is SO much joy in H Jon's voice when he says it. My body biologically responds to it and fills me up with the same glee that babies should do (for my age, anyway). But the entire episode is just feel good, nothing bad actually happens to anyone at any point (iirc). It's just an easy, joyful, watch!

Ohhhh man. Ooohhhhh MAN. This is so tough. There are so many that I can't think of any sjdjakdk. The most prevalent that comes to mind right now is from S14E5 Bully-ieve It or Not, when Trev charges Bob $7 for a glass of water and then goes "got you! classic me". Just the "classic me" tickles my soul I really respect the audacity LMAO.

This is going to be an obvious one but the carnies! I come from the Concrete Jungle™ (an industrially significant city at that), so the idea of living in a tiny rural town that has carnivals seems to whimsical to me! Background: Created when the universe was born, it knew that it had the job of guiding the souls of the living to Mirotein, a world where souls waited to be 'remelded' and sent back to Ratein and the Underworld. As time passed, it discovered that there were numerous souls who refused to pass as they were scared of what awaited them. Not wanting them to be afraid, it did their best to comfort them and promised to be with them no matter what. It also adopted a humanoid appearance to make the souls feel more at ease, though its likeness was always 'almost there' according to the souls who were brave enough to point out the inaccuracies to it

It soon realised that whenever it came to guide souls to Mirotein, their bodies tend to be in what the living called 'rigor mortis', and assumed that beings were aware of its somewhat tangible existence. It then decided to go by the name, until one of the chronovens informed it that it was the term used to describe stiffening of the muscles of corpses, and it was usually an indicator that someone had died

With the help of said chronoven, they rearranged the term to form Trigis Morro such that it sounded like an actual name. Fascinated by Ratein, as well as surprised that the chronoven could even see it to begin with, Trigis decided to bond with the souls it guides so as to learn more about the world on the other side of Mirotein, while also helping to comfort the souls. With the help of the Hourly Twelve, it was able to get a sizeable number of beings in Ratein to believe in a being called The Caretaker that would care for them when they passed, boosting Trigis' reputation

On 5 Primna 1436, it had guided Nadia and Leonardo to Mirotein, with the young girl soon asking it to let her go back to Lyuharrno to comfort Alena. Trigis didn't know how to send Nadia's soul back to the mortal plane, but did its best to make her wish a reality. It succeeded by creating a seemingly wood portal that allowed the souls to enter the mortal plane in 1497, however fearing that a sudden influx of souls in the mortal plane would cause imbalance to Ratein, it made it so that the souls can only visit the mortal plane for only a month

Inspired by this, Trigis decided to find a way to allow non-Miroteiners to show that they treasure those that had passed. It received inspiration from Ma Li, who had shared that in the Fuusamoa Empire, there was a 'silly' annual tradition that involved burning paper money to their dead relatives. Trigis eventually invented soul paper that when burnt, it would appear as 'souls' with its written contents on it. Thrilled, it asked the chronovens to spread news of its invention and find a way to work it into a holiday. With the chronovens' help, Tierna was the designated month for beings to burn their soul letters as Trigis didn't want to make the chronovens constantly busy as they helped it to collect the 'souls' despite protests that Trigis should be able to manage as it was Death personified

As a result, Trigis decided to make Unaeim the month when the portal was opened so that the souls can visit their loved ones after receiving letters. It wasn't sure if it should make it so that the souls have some form of communication as beings aren't able to hear souls speak, but the chronovens intervened and reassured it that it had done a lot to make the Miroteiners happy

Currently, it's trying to understand how 'remelding' works in Mirotein as there have been souls who lived for centuries still remaining in the afterlife, yet souls who have barely stayed in Mirotein for a day could be 'remelded' and sent off to either the mortal plane or the Underworld. Trigis is also trying to improve on its appearance, though the souls and the Hourly Twelve have already grown used to how it looked like. Trigis is also interested in pursuing a friendship with Viegin, though no one, not even Alexia and Salvatore, from the Hourly Twelve seem supportive of this...
