🧩 - carmen and daxton

"this is so fucking stupid!" daxton all but groaned out in frustration, looking down at the puzzle pieces sprawled out in front of them. they'd been carefully inspecting each piece for the most part of fifteen minutes and found nothing but a headache. when carmen had suggested they do a puzzle together, of course daxton wasn't going to turn the opportunity to spend more time with her down, thinking maybe it would be fun. things had been tracking well for the two of them and when daxton wasn't working out on the farm, they were helping her out with the bakery and cafe. all their spare time was spent with her, falling more in love with each moment. "all these tiny pieces look the same, how am i suppose to find the right one?" puzzles had never been something daxton had success with, even from a young age. usually they ended up in a mess on the ground and daxton in trouble for their temper. something like building lego was much more appealing to them, the way they got to work with their hands, didn't have to stare at the same looking puzzle pieces. their clenched fist sat atop their bouncing knee, "i'm really trying to keep my shit together but this puzzle is testing my new anger management techniques. it should not be this hard to find a piece of the damn border, fuck!" it was extremely overstimulating for them but they wanted to persist for carmen, "and fuck, yos-e-mit-e national park and it's stupid five hundred piece puzzle."

processing the fact that carmen had been with someone after they had left was hard enough but they were not prepared for what was to follow that information regarding who it was she had dated. of course they knew who charlotte was, everyone did. it made daxton sick, the woman was practically perfect in every way. they'd even joked with ashton numerous times about how attractive she was whilst they watched sports broadcasts together over the years. it was clearly visible that the gears were turning in daxton's brain as they comprehended what carmen was saying. that they had been the cause behind their parting of ways. carmen could have had everything, a life far from anything they could provide for her and yet that wasn't enough for her.

"why?.... why would you do that?" they asked finally, their mind still stuck on the fact she could have lived comfortably with someone who adored her. "why would you give up an incredible life with someone so stable in every way? someone who clearly loved you? for me. the idea of me. i'm just some junkie fuckup and she's - she's charlotte fucking spencer, carmen." she had no idea if they'd crossed paths again and gave that up for what? a hope that daxton would come home? "she could have given you a life i could only dream of providing you." the thought of meeting the woman made daxton feel even more nauseous, knowing the woman knew way too much about them for their liking. "if i were her i'd hate my guts. i can't even hate her for being with you because she helped you be a person again after i fucked everything up." hearing the two were good friends didn't surprise them, carmen was so easy to like and get along with and charlotte sounded like a breeze to be around but that meant meeting the woman was inevitable, yet their brain also couldn't move past the chemistry the two supposedly shared and daxton was a jealous person. "i think i need a little time before i meet her."

admitting the relationship she had after daxton was almost painful, but she didn't regret the relationship. carmen learned how to love again and learned to slowly put down her barriers. she loved charlotte but she wasn't daxton as mean as that sounded. but even charlotte knew that deep down but still was willing to be with carmen. carmen shook her head at daxton's question. " no. they moved here from the city years ago. she's a sport newscaster. you've probably seen her on tv." thankfully their relationship had been lowkey that there was no media tabloid to expose their relationship. that is what she loved about her small town. they didn't care much unless it was something scandalous (i.e. the matthews twin being booted from their home, or her family moving into the neighborhood). carmen cleared her throat. " charlie spencer." they were silent for a moment before speaking up again. " she came into the cafe a lot and ashton thought i should shoot my shot with her cause i guess we had chemistry or whatever." she shook her head. " anyways, we both mutually separated. it wasn't fair for me to date her when my mind was still on you after all these years; and she knew that but didn't say anything because she was enjoying what we had. we both still have a lot of love for each other but as friends. im sure she would love to meet you."

Carmen had been at Eclipse just to get the house keys from Chai since she’d forgot hers inside of her room that morning, she waited quietly at the bar while he ran to the back. Taking a seat as she ordered a water from the other bartender working, she took a sip from it. As she waited for Chai a shot appeared in front of her and she looked over at the man next to her with a curious expression. Clearly he was having one hell of a night, but she wasn’t sure why he had picked her. “Sorry, but I think I have to decline.” She knew better than to take a drink from a stranger considering that she’d also been the stranger who was poisoning others drinks. Pushing the shot back to him softly and she gave a smile. “I’m just here picking up keys, not to dance or drink.”

He could feel the music pounding through his system as he headed towards the bar, like a second heartbeat. A wicked grin across his face as his head slightly nodded along to the music as he walked. He needed his routine. Wake up early and write, head to Starlight Bar to bartend, then to Eclipse until he dropped from exhaustion. A perfect cycle of lack of sleep and enough alcohol to keep his magic safely out of his grasp. So here he was, having danced the night away, ordering two shots. "Cheers!" He said, sliding the shot to the person next before downing his shot and licking the salt and lime off the back of his hand.

He padded through the bookstore quietly, eyes scanning over the titles taking every one in. He owned too many books to count, far too many, and yet here he was with a stack of seven books in one arm and an eighth in his other hand ready to be added to the pile. Seeing his one of his own books on the shelf he moved it slightly to display it better so the cover could be seen among the forest of spines. Feeling eyes on him, he looked up guiltily, catching the other's eye, not sure if they realised what he was doing. "What? I'm not doing anything... nothing at all."

"Did you know the guy who invented the ice pick lobotomy killed a guy cause he turned to have his picture taken while he literally had an ice pick looking thing in the guys brain?" Linden said bemused to the person at the next table over, peering over the top of his book slightly. His coffee sat in front of him, having long gone cold. "And people think the supernatural are monsters. This dude was horrible."

Dark smoke curls all around you, the black ash clogging up your nose and choking your throat. The sound of sirens is muffled in your ears. The base of your skull feels like it's split in two, a sharp pain blooming on the back of your head. Your eyesight is blurry but you can just make out the body writhing around on the ground.

You're hurt and blood seeps out of your wounds. You should be dead. You shouldn't be able to move, but here you are struggling to breathe. The acrid air in your lungs burns. Your vision tinges red. You can't help but watch as the body across the street from you sits up, rotten eyes fixed on your own.

It's jaw unhinges as it lets out an unearthly scream. It's hungry– no not hungry, ravenous– filthy drool dripping down it's chin. In a flash it descends upon you.

Starving.

Yearning for something to eat.

Desperate.

Yearning for food.

Famished.

Yearning to tear your flesh apart.

In your senior year of high school, you remain the sole survivor of a brutal car crash that kills your father. Grief stricken, your mother decides that it's time for a fresh start. Javier Delgado | he/him | 23 | ISTJ-T | Puerto Rican American

Javier has short, dark brown hair that curls just slightly around the edges. His down turned eyes are light brown and speckled with green. His golden tawny skin is lightly smattered with freckles across his cheeks. Javier is 5'10" and he has a thin, lanky build which makes him seem much taller than he really is. A pair of plastic-rimmed, light green glasses sit on his hooked nose. He says that they're just for reading but in truth, his eyesight just really sucks. His thick eyebrows are almost constantly furrowed, causing people to think that he’s always upset. Javier favors more muted, earthy toned colors in what he wears. He's not particularly fashionable however, wearing whatever is clean and comfortable.

Carmen Bautista | she/her | 23 | ESFJ-A | Filipina/Brazilian American

Carmen has long, wavy hair that stops just below her shoulder blades. Her hair is dark brown turning into a blonde ombre the further down it goes. She normally keeps it pulled back into a low bun or a French braid. Her wide eyes are almond shaped and dark brown. Carmen’s olive skin is completely flawless. Her full lips seem to be set in a perpetual smile, showing off the deep set dimples on her cheeks. She is 5'9" and has a plump, hourglass figure. She can normally be found wearing jewelry. However, Carmen doesn't wear rings, saying that she prefers to keep her hands free of any obstructions. She does have her nails painted a bubblegum pink though. Carmen favors pastel colors and soft clothing that she can easily move around in.

Max Friedman | she/they | 22 | ISTP-A | Jewish American

Max has wildly curly, dark copper hair that reaches just below their ears which is choppy since they cut it themself. Their eyes are a pale stormy gray and droopy, giving them a sleepy appearance. However, paired with her thin lips that seem to be constantly set into a scowl, it only highlights Max's less than friendly demeanor. Max has pale skin with warm undertones. She's covered from head to toe in freckles. They have a small cut on the right side of their upper lip. Their nose is slightly crooked, having broken it from a skateboarding accident. She's the shortest out of the group (not including Gwen), standing at 5'2" and she has a lithe build though the baggy clothes she wears make it seem that Max is skinnier than she really is. They carry around a skateboard wherever they go. 

Eun-Woo Park | he/him | 20 | ESTP-T | South Korean

Eun-Woo has short, pencil-straight black hair that's been styled into an undercut, his bangs left longer than the rest. Thick eyelashes rim his monolid eyes. The irises are a brown so dark that they're almost black. Eun-Woo's milk white skin is spotted with moles, the most notable being the two that sit underneath his left eye. His hands are covered with old calluses and jagged scars mar his knuckles. Eun-Woo stands at 5'7" and has a sinewy, toned build. His ears are double pierced and he has a helix piercing on his right ear. Eun-Woo's nails are painted black. He likes wearing black clothing however, he always wears a red SSG Landers cap along with a NY Yankees letterman jacket.

Derek Campbell | he/they | 24 | ISFP-A | African American/Caucasian

Derek has dark brown, shoulder length dreads. The ends are dyed a light honey brown though he's constantly changing the color. He normally keeps his dreads tied back in a loose ponytail or bun. Their full lips seem to always be set in a sweet smile. Their dark brown eyes are round and wide set, emphasizing their friendly demeanor. Light stubble softens their sharp jaw. Derek has light brown skin, having two scars on his face: one that runs down the corner of his left eyebrow and the other running across the bridge of his nose. He's the tallest of the whole group, standing at 6'5" and his chubby, thick-set build seems imposing at first. They're really just a big marshmallow though. Derek seems to favor more athletic wear, though they'll wear whatever feels comfortable to them. They like bright colors, especially pink and yellow.

Elijah/Elizabeth Watts | he/him or she/her | 26 | ENTJ-A | African American

Eli has dark umber skin with cool undertones. Jagged, old scars crisscross all over their body. They have a full sleeve tattoo of a snake surrounded by lotus flowers on their left arm. F!Eli has long, tightly coiled black hair which she normally keeps tied back into a low ponytail or a braided bun. M!Eli has short, tightly coiled black hair that's cut into a fade, his coils either left free or tied back into cornrows. Even if they're not upset, Eli's eyes seem to be constantly narrowed, the warm honey brown irises standing out against their dark skin. Their full lips hide a gap-toothed smile. Both M!Eli and F!Eli stand at 6'0". They have a toned, muscular build. They wear no makeup or jewelry, other than the dog tags that they keep hidden underneath their clothes.

Gwen Nguyen | she/her | 10 | Vietnamese American

Gwen has warm toned, honey skin and wide, black eyes. Her chubby cheeks are dusted red, only further highlighting her innocent appearance. However, the sneaky rude gestures and hidden eye rolls show that she's much more cheeky than she looks. Gwen likes to wear anything soft and pastel colored. She always has her favorite pink bear plushie with her. Gwen is also deaf, so she wears a pair of sparkly hearing aids. Other than using sign language, she also communicates with a small whiteboard that she keeps tucked away in a pastel yellow backpack.

Pa and Ma Hazel:

Pa is a 10 year old German shepherd and Ma Hazel is an 11 year old cocker spaniel. Pa is short coated and his fur is a dark sable color with his underside being a honey brown. His muzzle is also lightly streaked through with gray. Ma Hazel is medium coated and her fur is a brown roan. Her muzzle is also slightly graying and her nose is spotted. In lieu of collars, Pa wears a forest green bandana around his neck. Ma Hazel doesn't wear a collar at all.

Carmen wasn’t sure she was ever going to come back to town, but as she stood outside of Thin Ice she sighed. Se knew she owed a number of people an apology, but the main one was JC. Now she’d taken two shots at him in two different ways; she could barely live with herself over it. Pushing open the door as she made her way towards the ice, she nervously picked at her nails. Dropping her skates at the bench when she saw JC and she gave a defenseless wave. “You owe me nothing I know, but could you maybe spare a moment to talk to me?” She asked softly. “I promise I won’t take up too much of your time.”

Option A

Carmen walked up the deck of the boat with a smile and her sword. Leaning against the railing when he turned around and she gave a wave. "Oh you see I came aboard for a fight." She told him with a laugh. It had been ages since the two had sparred, but she figured now was the perfect time to put some of her old training to use. "What do you say Captain? Want to risk your title on a fight with this fair maiden?"

Option A: The Jolly Roger

Chai had been leisurely resting across one of the lower masts of the ship. His arms were crossed behind his head, propping himself up enough so that he could stare out at the Faire festivities going on below. Only bothering to call down as a townsgoer made their way onto the deck of the ship. "You there," He said, pulling himself up to his feet as he hooked his sword over one of the many ship chords, propelling himself down onto the deck beside them. "What brings you aboard?"

Option B: The Feast of Thieves

"How do you? Do you just-" She blinked over at the Turkey leg in hand, tilting her head to the side to attempt to take a bite, only to pull back again and look at the leg questionable over once more. "Oh what the hell?" Bri finally decided as she took the biggest bite she could muster. The now vampire had been a vegetarian most of her human life, but now that she had to survive off a diet of blood, she had decided what the hell? Might as well see what she had been missing out on all this time on the meat front. "Huh," She swallowed down the bite, motioning to the person beside her with the turkey leg. "You know not as good as I thought it would be?"

Option C: The Knight's Joust

 "Doth thee liketh excitement? Doth thee want to be entertained? The next joust starts in 20 minutes and, if thee couldst doth me the honor? You'd join me in the right corner of the arena. It is the shady corner. Right under the big Oak Tree. You won't have to worry about drying up under the sun and, when thou art standing in the right corner, Sir Lancelot the Galavanting Lover and Arguable Traitor, but all around Decent Fellow's corner - tis I, by the way- thou might cheer on the right side for victory? Aye? For Sir Lancelot? Huzzah? 'Twill beest a valorous time," Caleb called out as he trotted around the arena on horseback, only to hop down from the horse to offer a passerby in the crowd a rose. "A rose for thee. May thee cometh to the joust? It's sure to be a great time?"

I've been thinking a lot about the Valdez family—and not just Sammy, Esperanza, and Leo—so I decided to make my own in depth Valdez family list with headcanons (obviously, since some we don't even know the name of)

Sammy Valdez was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the first in his family to be born in the United States, his parents having immigrated from Mexico right before he was born.

Sammy's wife (Leo's bisabuela), Otília Delgado-Fuentes, was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to Houston as a teenager with her parents. She met Sammy at his shop when her car broke down and the rest in history. She ended up working the business side of Sammy's shop, selling spare parts, as well as putting in transactions for what Sammy was doing.

In addition to Sammy Jr. (I'm just gonna be calling him Samuel for the sake of simplicity for now on), I think they had three editional kids: the others being Emilio, Aleyda, and Evangelina. Samuel was the eldest, followed by Aleyda, Emilio, and finally, Evangelina.

Samuel, as well as Evangelina, followed in their father's footsteps and became mechanics. Aleyda became a writer, and Emilio helped his mother run the business portion of the shop. Both Emilio and Aleyda decided to attend college, while Samuel and Evangelina did an informal trade school under their father's tutegale.

Aleyda moved away to New York and married a fellow latine writer named Salvador García, and barely keeps in touch with the family. They have no children.

Emilio married a woman named Martha Delacruz and had three children—Silvia, Estefania, and Enrique.

Evangelina never married, instead focusing on her career. She was Esperanza's favorite person when Esperanza was a girl, and her biggest inspiration, and also adored Leo. I haven't decided why or how, but unfortunetely, Evangelina died sometime before Esperanza, because I'm convinced she would have fought tooth and nail to get custody of Leo if she was there.

Samuel, of course, had two daughters, Rosa and Esperanza. Samuel married Margarita Rosa Iglesias-Perez, a Mexican immigrant who went to Houston to attend college.

Rosa, in addition to Raphael (who Leo mentions in Mark of Athena, I believe) has two more children, María Rosa and Carmen with her husband, Matías Cisneros-Cortez.

Esperanza, obviously, has just Leo, who is the eldest of Sammy's great-grandkids, as stated in Mark of Athena. Some childhood Leo Valdez headcanons of mine is that he attended a bilingual school up until third grade (we know why third grade) and that he had to be taken to another classroom during math because he would act out due to boredom. (He has ADHD and was at a college math level at 8, of course he'd be bored.)

These next three are future, or my headcanon for Leo's kids, so if you were just here for the possibly canon-compliant ones, that's over! I'm totally fine with people using the previous name headcanons in fics without giving me credit, as it is just names, but I'd appreciate it if people tell me about some Valdez family fics! I'm always looking for some, and have only read like one or two. However, for Leo's children, if you take more than just their names, I'd appreciate the tag. I've had them since like 2016, and am really attached, even though some details have changed a lot since then (example being, back then, I thought canon couples were infallible and I had to make them Leo and Calypso's kids, when now, they're just Leo's).

This part is detailed in my Solangelo future fic, Surprise? but my favorite hc of all time is aro/ace Leo who adopts demigods to give them the childhood he deserved. So all three are demigods (children of Hephaestus as well, because I think that's fitting) and Leo's a single father who gets help from everyone at Waystation.

The eldest is Madalena Esperanza, who has her own POV in Surprise? in Chapter 7: Leo and Calypso's Garage: Auto Repair and Mechanical Monsters. She was born in Portland, Oregan, and her mother died of childbirth. With no other living family members, Hephaestus took her to Waystation to see if Emmie and Jo could take her (as Leo was still in college, at 20), but Leo saw her and instantly realized that he wanted to adopt her because he saw bits of baby him in her, and had the funds to as he was working part time at a local mechanic shop on weekends that paid decent, and Emmie and Jo were able to help. Madalena was the name her mother had planned to give her, and Leo added Esperanza when he officially adopted her. Random fact about her is she grows up to be an Olympic level skateboarder, and Leo built her a few pipes to practice.

Next, also in Surprise? is Leo's middle, Aidan. His story is detailed almost completely in the fic—his bio mother didn't want a kid and was going to give him up for adoption so Hephaestus went to Leo to ask him if he wanted to adopt another kid. Leo said yes, and him and Lena went to Illinois to pick him up from the hospital. His bio mother also didn't want to name him, so Leo and Lena did.

Finally, not in Surprise? is Emilia. Leo's youngest, who's seven years younger than Aidan, and thirteen younger than Lena, so she's not present in the fic, but is special in my heart. Her bio parent, like Lena's, died in childbirth, and Hephaestus once again asked Leo if he had room for one more kid. She was born in Miami, Florida.

So, there's my Valdez family tree! Again, feel free to use everyone in your fic, but Lena, Aidan, and Emilia are my children so I'd like a tag for them.
