Day 11: A Character You’d Love To Be Your Caregiver

Vulcan Tails

I'm not sure if it's known which fan "invented" Spock's tail, but in a nearly 60 year old fandom the actual pioneer is probably lost. I've been influenced by a ton of fan artists, notably shigeoreum here on tumblr and on twitter. They look very long and flexible, possibly prehensile, and end in a tuft of hair.

I've also seen the other obvious tail for Vulcans, a bifurcated tail like a demon, which is also cute but not my headcanon. From here on I'm just talking about my headcanons but I'm open to feedback/comments/questions lol. I just want to organize my thots

I really dig the imagery of a humanoid able to wrap their tail around their own waist semi-neatly. I think for most Vulcans this is the equivalent of poker face or maintaining composure, and in some formal clothing the tail is actually meant to be worn this way the entire time. It conveys several different attitudes depending on context, such as professionalism, objectivity, modesty, humility, etc.

And on the flip side, when the tail is "out" it is only mostly voluntarily controlled. It reacts to stimuli and emotions automatically and Vulcans work to control it as they mature the same way they discipline their own facial expressions and other bodily functions.

I think Surak had a docked/destroyed tail. Perhaps it was symbolic or a literal result of his outsider status. The tail could be your connection to your family line or community and when you are ostracized, it is literally cut.

This resulted in modern Surakians using the docked tail to signify the ultimate devotion to logic. And with the ritual of Kohlinar, the two meanings collide: a Kohlinar adept has achieved both perfect logic and perfect independence from their community. Your tail and your emotions are severed from you.

Along this same line, the tail is an instinctive object of interest for infants and small children. Many start walking as they hold onto their parent's tail. This could help a touch telepathy bond be maintained between children and caregivers while letting the caregivers use their hands freely.

I've read really interesting stuff about hunter/gatherer communities where babies almost never cry because they are in constant tactile contact with other people, including older children. They develop a tactile language before a verbal one and have all their needs for comfort met immediately. Sounds like how touch telepathy might work, or develop in a species.

A Vulcan in extreme distress might comfort themselves by stroking or holding their own tail. They may even comfort one another this way, or soothe a child by giving them an adult's tail to stroke. The equivalent gestures among humans might be rocking back and forth or hugging yourself.

The tail is prehensile to a certain degree but cannot lift heavy objects or ones that are too small to grip. The primary use of the tail is communication, it wants to wrap around the bodies of others as well as the Vulcan's own body. And remember that you can't pull on tails too hard because they're attached to the spine. Vulcans should have pretty well developed lower back muscles to wield this tail, I think

I have cats so I'm biased but I think the gestures are a blend between a cat's and a monkey's. Cats tails tremble, curve, lash, shake, whip, and wag to portray different emotions.

I'm writing a wedding fic and I realized that the children at the wedding would have bells and ribbons tied to the ends of their tails. But this would be seen as cringe on an adolescent or adult.

I think as far as touch telepathy goes it makes no sense for tails to be as telepathic as the hands, face, or genitals. BUT I would think that the skin of the tail IS somewhat sensitive. So, going back to the children touching a caregiver's tail, I think a Vulcan can naturally "sense" with their hands and attune to anywhere on a person's body that is ennervated. The tail is just very convenient and has developed to be a little receptive to telepathic touch, but not wield it as the hands do.

So the connotations of touching another adult's tail would be non-sexual intimacy and comfort. Maybe depending on how Surakian you are, or if you are in private, casual touching of tails is normal between friends and family members. It helps you coregulate to do so. Not only putting your hands on your friend's tail but putting your tail on their body. Maybe even wacking them with it to be annoying, I could see that as a sibling activity for sure.

Hey! How's you? So sorry I'm being a nuisance again. But do you think that they're trying to somehow minimize the bond between Pike and Una just to drag us into Pike and Batel thing (whatever that is atp)?

I don't understand why they're trying to make it happen when it's not happening? They're good actors but the chemistry is off, there is no organic growth, no bond, no depth of connection, no nothing. I'm not invested in their relationship.

And it's increasingly feels like they're downplaying Una and even other Starfleet character arcs to somehow prop up a pseudo romance which was not even needed? Why?

Unless there's a big twist with Batel, I don't get it.

Like I want to see more of Una and also about others. Does Una miss Illyria, her parents? Does she feels like she's standing between two lands: Illyria and Starfleet and Pike is the only anchor keeping her steady and grounded?

Like Una becomes an anchor for Pike as well, pushing him to at least try to attempt at a different future? But I don't know what the writers are trying to do!

Even with Pike there's already so much history and struggle and conflict within his own self and his timeline and the peace and resolution that needs to happen and the character growth but all we are getting is Batel?

I don't even know honestly what is up with Gorn and Batel. And with how Anson says that he wishes the relationship continuous because he likes working with Melanie. I'm losing hope about Pike/Una.

Hi, @acuriousmindsblog! ❤️ No nuisance at all. I’m not sure if you’re going to like all of my answers, though.

To start, I love a lot about how SNW has built the canon friendship between Pike and Una. However, I think the show doesn’t value friendship the way it should, as evidenced by Yellow’s conversation with Christine about Spock in Charades:

Yellow: What is your relationship to this being?

Christine: Oh. Um … he's my friend.

Yellow: Friends are not allowed complaints outside of the response period.

Christine: What? Why not?

Yellow: Because they do not have sufficient connection to the being in question.

Christine: Uh, but … friends are different in our world. We ... we care about them.

Yellow: You are each other's ... caregivers?

Christine: No. Well, sort of.

Yellow: This would answer a question we had. During the accident, the other being diverted the shields away from himself to protect you.

Christine: He what?

Yellow: He chose to protect you at the risk of his own life. So... can you explain? What is your relationship to this being?

Christine: I don’t know.

Christine said friendship is different, but the episode then torpedoes that idea and proves friendship isn’t enough because it took Christine (eventually) admitting her feelings for Spock to get Yellow’s help … as opposed to actually proving the power of friendship. (Plus Spock and Christine getting together in that episode.) This is the same kind of writerly thinking, imo, that completed Seven of Nine’s Voyager arc to regain her humanity by giving her a romantic relationship. And, hey, lots of people like romance — me included. But romance isn’t necessary to “prove” a character’s care for another (which is among my many, many issues with Among the Lotus Eaters because requiring romance to be the bond to memory wasn’t necessary; the bond to memory could have been anything else, including Pike’s delta as a talisman to remember his duty to his ship and crew).

So, I do think the show elevates romance above other bonds, but I don’t know if this is specifically done in Batel/Pike to minimize Pike’s bond with Una. It could be argued that Pike chose Una’s side over Batel’s side each time he had that choice (the arrest and the trial), so there’s that.

It’s possible that all of this gets to why the show is trying to make Batel/Pike happen — the idea that romance is somehow needed for a character arc. I agree with everything you said about why you’re not invested in Batel/Pike, and that the time spent on the relationship isn’t needed. I want to get to know Erica. I want more time with Pelia. (Honestly, even as a Pikeuna shipper, the ship possibility of Pelia/Pike is fascinating to me — the guy frightened of what he perceives as his impending death and the woman who lives practically forever.) I want stories about our crew as a crew on adventures.

But I think the writers don’t know what else to do with Pike.

Maybe Batel will die and show him a “good death.”

Maybe she’ll become a Gorn somehow, showing him the monsters he believes in aren’t so monstrous after all.

Maybe she’ll just come to her senses and dump him.

I don’t know. Like you, I want more Una. Una is my favorite character and I hope her belief in another way for Pike comes true in a way that brings both of them happiness. As for what you said about not knowing what the writers are trying to do:

I agree but, believe it or not, will give them some grace on that since we left on a cliffhanger.

I agree and also think they don’t know what they’re doing is proven by the hair and makeup changes when Batel went from season one fuckbuddy to season two romantic interest.

As for what Anson said, I could easily believe it would suit him to have a continuing love interest for Pike, thus avoiding the awkward actor moments of, “Hi, I’m Anson, nice to meet you. So, uh, for this stage kiss we’re about to do … anything I should know?” Plus, her character doesn’t have prosthetics (yet), which has got to be a plus in terms of stage kissing. (Watching Trek actors avoid prosthetics during staged intimacy should be a bingo game — though I guess Marina Sirtis wins that one by refusing to kiss Michael Dorn with his false teeth in.)

In terms of hope for Pike/Una — honestly, if those two had gotten together early in the show’s run, I would worry more that it would be just to blow the whole thing up. There are so few canon Trek relationships, after all, that break the rule of thumb that canon Trek relationships aren’t as good as the non-canon ones.

I think the key to sanity in all this (✨manifesting✨) is to keep the multiverse in mind. In the reality we’re seeing, Batel/Pike is a thing. In forty-seven other realities, Pike and Una are already married. Canon can be cruel, but it’s only one version of the fictional truth(s) you can hold in your heart.

Ward is a science officer (Lieutenant JR Grade), about 26-28 years of age. He's a trans man, uses he/him, and isn't interested in anything but weather!

He specializes in weather-related sciences and is good at the "lesser sciences" as well, but who cares about those fr

His usual range is between 7-10 when he regresses, and he's very much the eager and excitable regressor that needs to be engaged or else he becomes a nightmare. He's "independent" which means he prefers doing stuff by himself but you have to watch him the whole time. He's also very affectionately clingy and wants to sit right beside you all the time or at least be in the same room.

Bones is his CG (Usually just calls him Len rather than anything else) and Cooper (other oc) is his "little brother" (Cooper regresses younger + puppy-regressor). He's friends with Kirk when they both regress and Spock is an occasional babysitter (who tends to give him child-safe science projects instead, so maybe it's more like Spock is a science teacher).

He sometimes acts up on purpose and is playfully bratty, but sometimes winds up misreading people and getting worried that he's ACTUALLY annoying. And then he needs reassurance

His favorite thing ever is Commander Gale - she's his "caregiver" when Bones is away or busy. She's never far if Ward is regressed, and NEVER away at bedtime. Ward has a lot of bedtime anxiety when regressed, and if he doesn't have her, he just will not sleep - he will have genuine tantrums. Otherwise, he has several nightlights and Bones often has to put him to bed several times. Sometimes he crawls into Cooper's bed.

He has the same optional uniform all regressors have - the light green one! It's not enforced to wear them, but it is encouraged.

I love that post about Bajoran bluegrass and like... I raise you just childhood on other planets in general! Like what do Vulcans think of when they think of a childhood toy? I can imagine Vulcans giving their kids puzzles but they also keep sehlats, huge fluffy animals, so do they also give their kids big plushies for when the family sehlat passes away? What does a Vulcan children’s playground look like? Did Spock and Tuvok and Michael go on swings when they were kids or are Vulcan playgrounds just full of various logic puzzles? What’s on the curriculum in a Klingon classroom? Their culture values excellency in battle over everything else so how does a Klingon teacher convince a classroom of kids named after Kahless that no, you need to do your maths homework not just fight each other? When Keiko tries to convince Rom to send Nog to school with human and Bajoran kids we learn that the Ferengi education system works via apprenticeships rather than a rigid school structure with mandated materials, which is so interesting! It means that it must be really common for Ferengi to have massive blindspots in their knowledge for sectors they have no personal experience in. And we also learn that Quark used to read baby books to Nog when he was a baby so... Ferengi children’s literature! Ferengi kid’s cartoons! I bet Ferenginar has lots of Chuck E Cheese type establishments for kid’s birthday parties it’s probably an entire industry tons of people have stock and investment in. What about Cardassian kids! It seems that Cardassians have quite authoritarian parenting styles but they also value family over everything and it’s common for multiple generations to live together, so the pressure to move out of your family home doesn’t seem as prevalent in their culture. So Cardassian kids must be used to multiple caregivers and grow up with the expectation that they will care for their elderly family members. What does a Cardassian kids bedroom look like? Is it common for siblings to share? What about Bajoran children? What was the childhood of the last generation of Bajorans who got to have a childhood unburdened by the occupation like? How many culturally specific toymakers had their shops destroyed and how many children’s games haven’t been played in decades due to a lack of space and safety? If you’re a Bajoran parent who lost their youth to the occupation with a baby who’s been born in a free Bajor, what’s the thing you most want them to experience that you never got to have? I never stop thinking about this.

Hi, I was wondering if you have any headcanons for Regressor Jim Kirk and Caregiver Spock?

I decided to combine these two asks, thank you both for this request!!

Little!Jim Kirk with CG!Spock

Using age regression as a coping mechanism is normalized in the Star Trek universe

Of course you have small groups that hate on this, but there are few and harmless

On Enterprise most people know about Kirk being chaotic regressor

He mostly regresses to 2-7 range

After any hard mission he regresses to 2-4, he just needs to unwind after so much stress

If you think that Kirk will calm down while regressed then you are mistaken, this young lad will ZOOOM through the whole ship twice before sleeping

Somehow Spock can calm him down regardless of what's happening

After little!Kirk noticed this he just went: YOU! THE CHOSEN ONE! YOU'RE MY CG NOW! THERE'S NO WAY OUT OF THIS!

(just translate this to how typical 5 year old speaks. and yes, half the time little!Kirk speaks he screams)

Spock accepted his fate, they didn't have a choice

Spock is a good caregiver, but they still have work to to as a first officer

Usually Bones babysits Jim, occasionally Scotty

Both Spock and Scotty can make up really great bedtime stories, but sometimes they resort to describing their 'adventures'

Especially when Jim doesn't seem to be getting tired after the first three stories

Anyways

Spock is strong enough to pick up Jim and uses it to his advantage

By picking captain up when he is near regressing and going to Jim's quarters

Jim likes to be spun around by Spock and they indulge

Spock is very strict about no sweets before bedtime rule

Jim doesn't like that

This isn’t phrased perf because I’m tired but I do think in all these conversations about recognizing coding/hurtful tropes/bad narratives/ect y’all need to like start doing it for the disabled community too we can’t be the only ones who see ableism in media and point it out and I’m not talking about freaking Batman guys. Like learn the coding, learn any disability activism theories, learn what narratives harm us if you can do days of research to accuse every kids cartoon on the planet of q bait you can like spend two minutes online and get that bad guys with facial scars = bad. Like it’s not hard guys

Anyway a short very short list of like the most basic coding and narratives and just really general guidelines guys

Any and yes I mean any #quirky character, comedic relief, or airheaded character is coded to some degree as autistic or adhd for obvious reasons it’s not always good

Genuinely most “stupid” characters are coding with some form of learning disabilities

Characters who have trouble moving, easily tired, often in pain pls give em an aide

Odd, slow, or simple were all words to convey the character as some form of disabled in literature up until frankly now guys they still do it

Literally any fatphobia is ableism

Character talks too much? Fidgets? Has trouble paying attention? My dude that’s adhd

Also like obv autistic/ ocd detective trope here

Literally most non human characters are coded as Nd/ect famously. Spock

Facial scars? Sexy. Visible scarring only on the bad guys? Rancid ableist move on yes this is @ the ww movie

Literally anything that portrays a scarred character as inherently scary or villainous

Evil mental ward patients (yes mental wards have a history and currently are ableist but there’s a difference between a disabled person talking about it and abled people just villainizing the whole thing)

Cures yes almost any cure narratives is bad there’s a thin line with chronically ill characters as a community sims of them obviously do want to be cured but outside of that any narrative with physically disabled people is in fact ableist

Magical disabilities (nuance here)

Pls just learn to let blind characters be blind none of you are Garrett from Quest from Camelot none of you will be Garrett from quest from Camelot pls stop trying

Let us talk about wanting more characters and! Let us be critical of the characters we have. Yes we know Toph exists

Literally when we say x is ableist or y is z coded just listen to us it’s not hard no ones mad at you for not knowing

When physically disabled people are talking you have to listen yes even if you have depression physically disabled people get to talk about physically disabled specific ableism too just as much as you get to talk nd specific ableism

Cr/pple is a physically disabled specific slur don’t use it to explain your depression or your economy

Mentally Ill people aren’t inherently violent if that’s the plot of the story yeah it’s ableist

Mental age is an ableist concept

If your disabled character is #independent because just because you’re disabled you don’t need to rely on anyone? Yeah that’s ableist

Yeah disabled people sometimes do need constant care and help we’re people god

Low independence people are no more childish than any adult

If you’re disabled character can be independent that’s great just don’t insult every other disabled person to do it

Asthma is not just using an inhaler after recess pls just do five minutes of research here

Same with diabetes just like. Five minutes

If you’re confused talk to disabled people ( who are cool w being asked) but remember we are not a monolith and we have different comfort levels ect

Yes we can have s/o’s who in some level take care of us because relationships are about taking care of each other no they aren’t our caregiver (all the time this is when nuance happens) if you’re writing that dynamic just run it by a sensitivity reader literally it’s not hard dhfhdggg I have an aunt who takes care of her husband and an uncle who hired a nurse both these things are common just like. Use nuance. Don’t infantize. Gfhdgdhdgdyf

Dwarfism isn’t a joke neither is gigantism

Unless you’re disabled generally speaking none of it’s a joke honestly

That’s just off the top of my head this isn’t everything or even close but it’s like half of the bare minimum do some research y’all r annoying

I think that Rey is a regressor and also a caregiver, she's more familiar with her regression because she grew up alone and never had anyone to take care of aside from herself but she's so good with regressors. Anyways Ben is surprisingly not a regressor to me but I think that being a caregiver is a super duper vulnerable position for him

I'm such a sucker for the idea of breaking ships down to small and simple art: the shoes, the hands, art of a bookshelf that subtly makes it clear which couple is living there together. This deviantart of Spock and Kirk sharing a Vulcan kiss is such a charming example. As far as I can tell, it's done with pencil crayon and the shaded layers are soooo pretty and intricate. The fact that it's this fantasy form of affection, the brush of finger tips... it's simultaneously so romantic and so touching as an autistic person who sometimes prefers nontraditional displays of affection, you know?

Second/Right Art:

When I was looking through my favourite art, it was clear that I really like glowy art, but with Night In The Woods it's canon-accurate, and I just adore this piece so much. It was my phone background for a good couple of years. The abandoned but glowing town... the big ol' nightmare eyes... the band, as symbols of the origin of the town and the tradition it's trying to hang onto... it's SO GORGEOUS and also I just love the nightmare sequences from this game so much.

(fictional or real) BONES IS MY DAD FR!!!! also jim kirk is just a little guy and i think both spock + bones look after him. shared custody of the littlest guy ever. I think sometimes they pretend bicker when he's small because he immediately is like "D: NO!!!! WE R FRIENDS!!!" and its cute :)

also. also bones is 1000000% actually secretly a regressor too. but he has a very hard time regressing so he just pretends he isnt and doesnt regress.

DATA!!! is a regressor too and geordi is his cg. he has a literal baby mode i know this. also julian bashir is a baby mode and miles + keiko are his cgs.

nonstar trek uhh Link + zelda LOZ are flips for each other. ESPECIALLY breath of the wild era.

tigger is a kid regressor too and rabbit is his "reluctant" cg. Owl offers to look after tigger instead and rabbit is like "WRONG."
