Hello, I'm an aspiring game developer generalist but I honestly have no clue where to start, and my lack of attention span does not make it any better, do you have any advice on how to start learning to become a generalist?
It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to be a hobbyist, then I suggest reading my guide on the [minimum competence needed] to be able to contribute to a game development team. Then, start doing each of these things - write code, create art assets, build a level, make something playable. As you learn to do these tasks and level up, you'll become a generalist that's able to make a lot of contributions to a dev team.
If you want to be a professional generalist, the requirements are much more stringent. Generalists in the game industry really only exist at the upper mid-senior level, there really aren't any junior generalists because the juniors really lack the experience shipping and finishing games. A junior might enter without a specific specialty, but they have a lot of learning to do. It's much easier to learn one major thing at a time than it is to learn many things all at once, especially when the goal is delivering shippable quality results.
The minimum bar for competence for professional generalists is much higher. A professional generalist isn't someone who knows a little of everything and can get something started, it's someone who can finish a wide variety of tasks. A professional generalist can operate and produce work of shippable quality in multiple areas. I've personally worked on cameras, economy, combat, monetization, characters, AI, progression, animation, cinematics, localization, and lots of other game systems in my career.

CSS Positioning...
Today is the day I try my absolute best to focus on CSS flexbox.
Positioning in CSS is a complete guessing game to me currently, so today I'm going to specifically take the time to deep delve and try to fully understand what does what.
If you have any handy tips, I'd be grateful to hear them! Otherwise, I'll end up trying to make something that will hopefully make it easier to others too.
Wish me luck!

hey — i'm sorry if this question has been asked before. if it has, u can just link me to ur answer!
if you had to do your coding journey all over again, where would you start? what would you recommend to beginners?
Hiya!!
Yes, I have answered a similar question to this before, which you can view them here:
Ask link 1 | Ask link 2 | Ask link 3 | Ask link 4 | Ask link 5
Personally for me if I would start all over again, I would learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript then, after researching what area in programming I like (which would be web development and game development), I would learn some JavaScript frameworks like React and Vue. At the same time learning C# and Unity. The key part in what I just said is "after researching what area in programming I like" - find the niche you like and focus on the languages/frameworks/libraries etc you need to know to be very well in it.
Don't waste your time on things you don't need. Example: why would I learn about the data science side of programming? Right now it's not necessary for me to learn that... so I don't.
Don't know what you like and looking into having a job in programming? Look at the job listing's description of the kind of developer you want to be and look at what languages/frameworks/libraries they want you to know to apply. Obviously, you're not going to apply now but it gives you an idea of what the market is asking for.
As I explained in some of the asks I listed above, what I recommend for beginners all depends on what kind of programmer you want to be. But if you're confused and you're an absolute beginner, just try HTML, CSS and JavaScript as starters before having your full course meal, which would be the programming languages you researched that you need before the developer you want to be.
Here is a cool link that I am using currently to help me stay on track with different developer paths you could follow:
Roadmap.sh [LINK] - a community effort to create roadmaps, guides and other educational content to help guide the developers in picking up the path and guiding their learnings.
I hope this helps!! Good luck with your studies!

ugh reading a book of poetry based on really liking a single poem and then the rest is just sort of mid navelgazing with extra space is really depressing for some reason
#also makes me think well. why am i beating myself with hammers all the time and refusing to send anything in. if this gets published#when i know exactly why this got published; did a supposedly relevant MA about it at a place where they formed the relevant connections#which would just be good planning if it led to good poetry!!! but half the time. bad.#of course this is entirely subjective. might be fairer to say i just often don't like the output produced by that kind of career path#i think this is maybe because well. what are you writing poetry about. you don't seem very interested in anything beyond your own emotions#vague ideas about 'nature' might have developed into original ideas if you had studied something related to nature instead#writing poetry about trees without knowing anything about trees usually just ends up as particularly boring poetry about people#not even good poems about people because the only people you seem to socialise with are in creative writing MA programs. oof.

A little about me!
I'm learning to code through multiple means and websites, and I'm currently focusing on:
*HTML, CSS & Javascript (Harnessing those basics for Web dev) *Python (For my 8 month course that starts in January) In the near future, I hope to learn C#, so I can look into .ASP NET too! I'm hoping to become a junior Software Engineer or Developer this time next year.
I have a couple of side hobbies, learning the violin takes place over at @viowlett. I've recently started that and hope learning coding and violin side by side will keep my brain busy!

Hello, I'm only wondering how you would go about building a track to get a job in these lines of works, if you have advice. Thank you :)
Hiya! 💗
I have some advice yeah! Do bear in mind, the way I got into Software Development, now focusing on Web Development, was:
A couple of months of self-studying HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Python
Applied for a Software Development Technician apprenticeship - working in a company whilst studying at a college (had to do it online because of COVID restrictions)
Completed the apprenticeship + 2 exam certificates in Programming and Software Development
The company I did my apprenticeship hired me straight after I passed.
Other people had similar routes e.g. via higher education at a university or college, or did the complete self-study route and got a job at a company or just freelancing. Everyone's journey is different!
Building a successful track to get a job in Software Development requires a combination of a lot of things and not just learning how to program. I will assume you want to get into Web Dev, but this can be applied to other areas e.g. Game Dev or Moblie Dev. Here are some steps you could take:
Education and Skill Development
The most obvious: you need the skills...
Could find schools, online schools, colleges or universities to learn the subject: This is if you can. Some people learn better with a teacher there to help them so maybe attending a school setting is better for you!
Online courses and tutorials: Enroll in online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or Codecademy to learn specific programming languages (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript), frameworks, and development tools commonly used in web development.
Build a portfolio: Create a collection of projects that showcase your skills. Develop websites, and web applications, or contribute to open-source projects to demonstrate your abilities to potential employers. Use places like GitHub or GitLab!
Practical Experience
If you don't have the opportunity to be already working in a company in their IT department for experience, try these two types of experience you could try for experience:
Internships and part-time jobs: Seek internships or part-time positions in software development companies. This provides hands-on experience, exposes you to real-world projects, and helps you understand industry practices.
Freelance work: Take up freelance web development projects to gain practical experience and expand your portfolio. Platforms like Upwork and Freelancer can help you find clients and build a reputation.
Networking and Professional Development
Join online communities: Engage with online forums, developer communities (such as Stack Overflow), and social media groups to connect with like-minded individuals, seek advice, and stay updated on industry news.
Create a presence and show off your coding journey: I am a huge advocate for this. I had friends that I've mentioned on my blog that got their first developer job solely because they were posting their projects and learning journey on their Twitter accounts. For example, my friend Hikari (her Twitter) got her job because the employer saw her tweets of her progress then he noticed her portfolio page and asked for an interview with her - then she got the job. Try your chances with this method!
Contribute to open-source projects: Collaborate on open-source projects on platforms like GitHub. This not only helps you enhance your coding skills but also showcases your ability to work in a team and contribute to larger projects! Working in a team is a key skill!
Hope this helps! Thanks for the ask! 🙌🏾💗

Falling in love, again, with more OCs 🤷🏼
Yesterday my wife saw the color-coded post-it note tabs in one of my Fantastic Beast companion books and was like, “Can you make your next hyperfixation or special interest housekeeping?” and at first I almost walloped her, because rude, and then she quickly explained, “I’m just saying, in a perfect world where we could funnel your ridiculous ability to obtain and organize massive amounts of information into exactly what we needed, our house would be immaculate” and I was like “yes ma’am, and unfortunately they’re disorders for a reason”
We both had a good laugh. I then posted a fic I’d been working on, confident I’d be able to switch my brain back to another longtime interest (my research) after getting the current FB plot bunny out of my head…
And yet, less than 24 hours later, I’ve started another one. This is exhausting. Make it stop lmao. But 1969 Newt & his 18-year-old son are extremely humorous to me, so whatever
