On September 23rd 1880, John Boyd Orr, Nobel Peace prize winner, was born in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire.

John Boyd Orr's pioneering research led to millions of children across the UK being given free school milk from 1946 to 1971 when Margaret Thatcher, then education secretary, cut provision giving her the mick name Thatcher, "Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher”

Boyd Orr was born in Ayrshire into a religious and highly literate family, and it was perhaps inevitable that he should be destined for a career in teaching after studying theology. However, his studies at Glasgow University also opened up new avenues for him. He became interested in the theories of Darwin, and this led to a fascination with zoology.

When he graduated with his MA in 1902, he was assigned to a teaching position in the Glasgow slums to fulfil the obligations required by his scholarship. He lasted only a few days before resigning and going back home to Ayrshire where he was reassigned to a school in Saltcoats. There he completed his teaching but left as soon as he could, saying: "though I liked the children, I hated teaching them”.

Boyd Orr returned to university to study biology and medicine, and he graduated with a BSc in 1910 and MB ChB two years later. He only practised for one month before returning to university to undertake nutritional research. His MD thesis in 1914 was awarded the Bellahouston Gold Medal for the most distinguished thesis of the year.

On the recommendation of his supervisor, he was asked to be the first director of a new research institute in Aberdeen, which would later become the world renowned Rowett Institute. At the time of his appointment, it did not exist, but he would spend the next twenty-five years raising both funds and the profile of nutritional research to make it a reality.

The initial work to build the institute was, however, interrupted by the outbreak of war. Boyd Orr enlisted in the RAMC and saw active service on the Western Front where he was awarded both the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Order. Later he would never wear the medals saying that the truly brave men had all died.

In the interwar years, he travelled widely and published extensively, emerging as one of the country’s leading experts in nutrition. He first came to national attention in 1936 with the publication of Food, Health and Income, a report of a dietary survey by income group, which revealed that the cost of a diet meeting basic nutritional needs was beyond the means of half the British population.

This led to similar studies being conducted in nineteen other countries and prompted the creation of a Commission of the League of Nations, which tried to formulate a global food policy. It became the forerunner of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Boyd Orr would become the Director General of the FAO from 1945-48. These were important years because the predicted European post-war famine was averted in part by policies put forward by the organisation.

Boyd Orr was no stranger to the challenges of developing and implementing food policies, many of which are still with us today. He spent his later career trying to persuade governments and presidents, organisations and companies to rethink the way they did things. However, he would often bemoan the fact that while he could persuade farmers of the importance of the nutrition of their animals, he could not stir their interest “in the food of their ain bairns, far less in the bairns of ither folks”.

His was a life filled with honours and awards, from Gold medals at University to military decorations to honorary degrees and more. He was elected Rector of Glasgow University and subsequently became its Chancellor. He was briefly a British Member of Parliament, and in 1935 he was knighted for his services to agriculture. In 1949, after he was awarded the Nobel Prize, Prime Minister Clement Attlee ennobled him as Baron Boyd Orr of Brechin Mearns.

Reading of Boyd Orr’s long career it seems he had a series of false starts and perhaps even failures. But he was no dilettante. He combined a powerful intellect with an admirable work ethic to achieve a mastery in everything he tried. That he chose to move from a career in teaching to medical practice, to research, to politics and then to governance and policy making was not evidence of mere restlessness but of a constant desire to do meaningful work.

Boyd Orr was at heart a man with an ambitious vision for the world, and he firmly believed that real peace and prosperity would only ever be achieved when no one was hungry.

The citation for the 1949 Nobel Peace Prize read: “for his lifelong effort to conquer hunger and want, thereby helping to remove a major cause of military conflict and war”.

I guess I've never really shared my full study journey on here, so here goes! :)

I actually started out wanted to go into acting! I still love it a lot, I did a lot in high school and I was part of a few local theatre things that I still hold very dear to me. I did go to film school for acting a few years ago now and it was one of the most amazing times of my life. I was living away from home for the first time, in a different province, and the people in my class were literally from all over the world 🌎 I still follow them on other socials and it's phenomenal to see what they've all been up to since then <3

I moved back home after film school with the intention of saving up to move to Vancouver permanently to pursue my acting career but the Covid pandemic hit literally a week after I got a job 🙃 over the course of a month I watched all of my acting/entertainment friends be out of a job and theatres shut down all over the world. it hit me in a way I hadn't expected and I reflected on how much stability I wanted in my career. acting is already a very fickle industry. you're never guaranteed anything and it can be so much work to get even the smallest jobs. I realized I needed more stability than that in the face of a global pandemic. I was mulling over my options when NASA launched their Mars Perseverance rover.

I woke up at 5 am to watch the live stream of the launch and I felt a draw to it like I was a kid. space and its exploration have always been fascinating to me, so I began looking into it more. astrobiology was a very up and coming field and I wanted to be part of it so I applied to an astrophysics program (the closest I could get) at the university in my city and got in! 📚

I stayed in that program for a year and in the fall semester of my second year I realized I wasn't having fun with the physics. I didn't understand a lot of it and even though I still passed the courses, I didn't feel like I was learning anything and it wasn't exactly what I wanted to do. the one part I did love was the data analysis we had to do in our physics labs and I enjoyed the one compsci course I had taken as an options class. so I switched programs and am now working towards a BSc majoring in stats and minoring in computer science! 💻📖

university has always been an investment for me. no matter what path I take, I know the work will be worth it for me to have a higher quality of life after I graduate. data analysts are needed for everything so I don't doubt I'll be able to find a decent job after graduating. I'm currently in year 4/5. programs here are normally 4 years if you take 5 courses a semester, but I simply cannot do that, so I'm spreading it out a bit more (plus I had to play catch-up with switching programs).

overall I'm happy where I am. I still miss acting but I'll get back into it as a hobby once I graduate. in summary: acting -> astrophysics -> stats and cs

Momona Tamada, a Vancouver-born actress, is stepping into a dream role as Ty Lee in the live-action adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender." “It truly feels like I’m living in a dream. Avatar was on my list of dream projects, and now bringing that series to life feels so full circle,” she shares. Known for her dynamic performances in Netflix’s "The Baby-Sitters Club" and "To All the Boys" series, Tamada’s journey into acting began through dance, evolving into a flourishing film career. Tamada’s preparation for the role has been both exciting and challenging. “Some characters are easier to access, while others need a bit more time and experimenting to uncover. Hi Momona how are you? What’s keeping you creative nowadays?

I’m good! Thank you! Recently I’ve been loving exploring the things that spark my curiosity the most. This can look like a lot of different things. Sometimes it’s drawing, and writing, other times it’s dancing and experimenting with movement! As an artist I believe we must honor the things that inspire us and follow them to wherever the journey takes us!

How did you get started in acting, and what drew you to this career?

My introduction to acting and the film industry actually began through my love of dance! At first, I expected to work as a background dancer on films to broaden my experiences. Through that, I was introduced to the acting side of the industry! Although I never planned to start a career in film, I truly feel so lucky to have found something I love and am growing in by the day! 

Can you share a memorable moment from your early days on set?

Some of my favorite memories were made on set of The Babysitters Club. 6 other girls and my first “big” project as an actress, it was everything I could’ve ever asked for! We had the best times everyday, on set off set, it was all a blast. One specific memory I still cherish was getting to spend my 13th birthday on set. We were filming a scene reshoot for the bsc and that date ended up landing on my birthday. I got to celebrate it with the cast and crew -and the girls threw me a surprise bday party after!! 

How do you prepare for a new role, especially one as significant as in "Avatar: The Last Airbender"? 

My preparation looks different depending on the requirements of the role and project. As well as the “connectedness” I have to the character from the beginning. Some characters are easier to access, while others need a bit more time and experimenting to uncover. In regards to Ty Lee, I feel as though we share many similar traits which makes the process very fun! It’s also helpful to have such a well written and loved character to look to in terms of character and performance.

What challenges have you faced in your acting career, and how have you overcome them?

There have been many challenges I’ve faced over the last few years, but it’s important to work through them with both patience and kindness towards yourself. Acting is an art at its core, so it can often be discouraging when you feel as though you aren’t able to connect or perform something in the way you want. That being said, something that has really helped me through my challenges is reminding myself that by trying something, you are already taking a step forward in it! You don’t have to classify things as “good” or “bad” rather the mindset you have towards an experience!! 

Let’s talk about “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” How does it feel to be part of the live-action adaptation of such a beloved series?

I say this all the time, but it truly feels like I’m living in a dream. Avatar the Last Airbender was a show on my list of dream projects and roles, so to be a part of the live action adaptation is something I can’t even describe in words! I fell in love with the series when I watched it for the first time in 2020, and now bringing that series to life feels so full circle. 

Can you tell us about your character in "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and what drew you to this role? 

I play Ty Lee in Avatar: The Last Airbender. She’s originally a talented contortionist and circus performer, and also known to be a chi blocker. This is a technique that allows her to temporarily block others’ muscles using pressure points, and in turn, their abilities to bend elements. Ty Lee is bubbly and full of life, and is often seen with princess Azula and her fellow best friend Mai!

How do you stay grounded and maintain a work-life balance?

I think I owe a lot of my ability to stay grounded to my family and friends. They’ve been there with me since day one, long before I thought I’d step into the world that is this line of work. They know me in every way and remind me of the importance of maintaining my who I am outside of the industry.

What role has your family played in supporting your career?

My family has been my biggest form of support. Through my love of dance to now acting, they’ve made endless sacrifices for me to be able to continue what I love. I don’t think I realized it then, but as I get older, my appreciation for them grows daily. Especially for my parents. They supported any crazy thing I wanted to do, encouraged me when I needed it, and reminded me of the love I come from. 

How would you describe your personal style, and what influences your fashion choices?

I think my personal style is constantly changing. The thing I love about fashion is that it is an expression of yourself. What you wear is ultimately your choice and is a place in which you’re able to express freely. It’s been fun getting to see how my tastes have changed as the years go by. I definitely look to the people around me as well as my own personal preferences to craft my own wardrobe and style.

Can you share any causes or social issues you are passionate about and why? How do you use your platform to raise awareness for these causes?

In terms of the world, I believe that we should be there for each other, at all times, but especially when others need it the most. It doesn’t take away from you to help others or to ask for help. Some of the things I feel deeply passionate about are mental health awareness as well as equality rights. In this day and age, social media seems to carry so much of the information we consume, so getting to use my platform to spread knowledge, encourage others, and find ways to support those around me brings me joy. 

What advice would you give to young people who want to make a difference in their communities? 

To go for it!! I think it can be easy to feel underestimated as youth, but we prove time and time again that our ages don’t limit us and the changes we are making in the world. It inspires me to see how other young changemakers are redefining the world we live in. They inspire the world around them and are making the changes!!

How do you define success, both personally and professionally?

This is such a great question and something i’ve been thinking about a lot recently. I think constantly striving for “success” can become a daunting cycle if it falls into unhealthy habits and perspectives, so recently I've been trying to redefine what success may look like to me -even if that may not be the typical definition of success. Discovering sensations and exploring the idea of “new” has been something that I prioritize as success as of recently. Even if you didn’t grasp or complete something in full, it should still be deemed a success if it makes you feel good and or helps you grow as an individual.

What life lessons have you learned from your experiences in the entertainment industry? 

The value of your authenticity and self. The industry is filled with thousands of talented individuals that are all making their mark on the world, but that doesn’t mean it takes away or creates a lack in your talents. It's been valuable to explore and develop an understanding and acceptance that you are your own person and have a unique way of impacting the world. As long as you follow your own heart, trust that you will end up where YOU need to be. 

How do you deal with setbacks and failures, and what motivates you to keep going? 

In the heart of this question, I believe the thing that ultimately keeps me going is passion. My love and eagerness to learn more and to experience growth drives me through the many setbacks I may encounter. Sometimes, certain obstacles are tougher than others, which is where I lean on community and those around me for support, especially if I feel that I cannot overcome them alone. We should not fear failure as a reason to keep us from achieving what we want! 

If you were a book, what book would you be and why?

If I were a book I think I'd be one filled with feel-good comforting quotes and messages. Something that you can look at any place, at any time, as a reminder of your unique place in the world. A book that feels like a warm hug!!

I don’t know whether I can do the reblogging part because I haven’t really posted anything in a while due to mostly doing it for other people’s posts, but for things that make me happy, I’ll say:

Music on Spotify (British Pop, EDM, Country and VGM)

Pokémon - specifically Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. I have an appreciation for Super the most because it was the first game I ever started playing, but I like all the games equally based on what I’ve seen. :)

Splatoon. I started with Splatoon 3, but since then despite not having played 2, I’ve become obsessed with the series and it’s become the second thing I absolutely enjoy, most of all squid parties XD My main Splatoon sona is an Octoling that I want to get around to drawing in my own style after Art Fight 😭 XD

Writing & Drawing - I love doing stories and drawing to my heart’s content, because it’s always good to see what can come out of something done by my own hand. Completing an artwork or a story chapter just feels very satisfying 👌

Gaming - Playing games since I was a kid is the very reason I’m attempting to gain a career in the field I’ve now graduated from, which is a BSc in Computer Games Technology. Becoming a developer and playing a multitude of different video games is something I hope I can use as inspiration moving forward as a part of me that hopes to improve himself as time goes on as much as possible.

I don’t think we talk enough of what happened to people in their late 20s and early 30s during Covid.

You had just graduated and entered the workforce a few years back. Started building your career, taking steps up on those ladders. You had maybe moved in with a spouse a few years back.

Suddenly, everything changed. You were locked in with the spouse. Or perhaps you missed out on your golden years of finding a spouse. Work changed. Suddenly everything was Gen Z this and that. You were suddenly too old for the specialist level and way too uncool as per your year of birth, and too young for management and exec level. You were supposed to have children, but the spouse left during the lockdown, or you didn't find anyone because of the said lockdown.

And now you're this person with a strange period in your CV when you've been stuck. It doesn't matter if you took courses in Yale, Harvard, or Cambrigde to boost your knowledge. Your still the one who got stuck during Covid.

I literally have BBA, BSc, MBA, MSc, diploma in information technology, and a degree worth of courses from universities like Yale, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins, and can't get a job anymore because they either go to Gen Z just graduating or Boomers in the end of their career, and my doctor keeps asking me if I'm pregnant soon while my fiancee left after lockdown to run away with a younger girl.

Krista Diamond (Nonfiction)

Krista Diamond's essays and fiction have appeared in or are forthcoming in The New York Times, Slate, Hazlitt, Longreads, Catapult, Joyland, TriQuarterly, Beloit Fiction Journal, Porter House Review, and elsewhere. Her writing has been supported by Bread Loaf, Tin House, Sundress Academy for the Arts, and the Nevada Arts Council. In 2022, she was writer-in-residence for Desert Companion Magazine for whom she wrote a series of essays about Las Vegas lore. Her essay 'That Girl is Going to Get Herself Killed' was recorded by Oscar-nominated actress Naomie Harris for Curio. Prior to moving to Las Vegas, she worked in the national parks. She has an MFA in fiction from UNLV and is looking forward to continuing her journey at UNLV where she will be happy to offer personalized recommendations about desert hiking and Las Vegas tiki bars.

Arpita Roy (Poetry)

Arpita received her MFA in Poetry from George Mason University, where she was the Thesis Poetry Fellow for 2023-24. She has been awarded Cheuse Center Travel Fellowship and Bread Loaf Katharine Bakeless Nason Award. Her work can be found in Thrush, Psaltery & Lyre, Couplet Poetry and X-Ray. Arpita is from Kolkata, India.

Gustavo Alvarenga

Gustavo Alvarenga is a Salvadoran born writer whose cultural background and strong family bonds play heavily into his fiction. He was raised in the suburbs of Northern Virginia but moved to Las Vegas during his sophomore year of high school when his parents relocated for work. He worked as a technician in the telecom industry for over a decade before deciding to switch careers and commit fully to the art of writing. He enjoys board games, hikes with his dog, rainy days, snowboarding, rock climbing, and meeting new people.

Jade Bailey

Jade Bailey grew up in Kansas. After completing a BSc in Anthropology at the University of British Columbia and an MSc in Applied Social Research at Trinity College Dublin, she worked as a social researcher in Dublin, Ireland. She is pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at UNLV.

Shayla Felix

Shayla Felix (She/her) is a disabled writer born and raised in Seattle Washington. She originally attended Eastern Washington University but later transferred, completing her BA in English with a Creative writing Emphasis at Western Washington University. Most of her writing focuses on hybridity with topics orbiting around Magical realism, feminism, nature, and self-identity. Some of her favorite pieces that she’s written appear in Voidspace_, Quarter After Eight, and Cold Mountain Review. She also hopes to travel to all 50 states one day.

Julia Lu

Julia is a fiction writer currently living in Houston, Texas, where she was born and raised. She studied film production in college. Julia enjoys cooking and baking, taking walks, and picture books. Her favorite season is summer.

Izuchukwu Udokwu

Izuchukwu Onyedibiemma Udokwu is a Nigerian storyteller. His work has appeared on LOLWE, Kalahari Review, AFREADA and others. He was shortlisted for the 2020 K & L Prize. His shortlisted story was published in an anthology of speculative fiction on Africanfuturism, Black Skin No Mask. He lives in Lagos, Nigeria, where he is a fashion designer and an interior designer, and still makes time to read and write stories.

Hüseyin Arıkan

Hüseyin Serhat Arıkan is an immigrant and poet from Ankara, Turkey. He earned his BS in Political Science from METU. He's excited to have his second collection, "Firar Folkloru" (The Folklore of Escape) published in Turkey this year. He is a progressive rock enthusiast and he can't manage to maintain a streak in Duolingo.

JM Huck

JM Huck is coming to creative writing with a background in visual art. She studied photography, printmaking and textiles at many schools in New York City, where she lived for eight years. JM spent three years teaching English in Japan, and she grew up a "third culture kid," graduating from an American High School in Italy. She has been placemaking her whole life and is happy to call Nevada her current home. Huck's undergraduate degree is in Economics from Agnes Scott College.

Seth Kleinschmidt

Seth Kleinschmidt is a poet from rural Wisconsin. Hailing from Lorine Niedecker's hometown, he proudly champions the Midwest in his poetry and is currently at work on a collection of sonnets about the Black Hawk War. He graduated with a degree in literary arts from Brown and has worked in the radio industry, both on and off the air, for fifteen years. Seth arrives in Las Vegas from Washington, DC, and in free moments plays soccer, bakes pies, and browses adoptable cats.

Lindsay Loughin

Lindsay Loughin is a nonbinary bipolar poet and essayist born in California and raised everywhere else. At one point a US Marine, and at another a high school marching band instructor, their current boss once said their resume looks like a fake person. They live with their two cats, collect cassette tapes and N64 games, and have a complicated relationship with the Oxford comma.

Anesce Dremen

Anesce Dremen is a U.S. writer and educator often found with a tea cup in hand, traveling between the U.S., China, and India. A first generation college student and domestic violence survivor, Anesce studied in four cities in China with the support of the Critical Language Scholarship and Gilman Scholarship. She was a 2022-23 Fulbright-Nehru ETA in India. Anesce’s work has been published in Stillhouse Press, Gordon Square Review, SPAN Magazine, Tea Journey, Persephone’s Daughters, The Bombay Literary Magazine, Tiny Spoon, and Shanghai Poetry Lab, among others. Taylor Wright

Taylor Bradley Wright graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Playwriting before moving back to Los Angeles and founding a non-profit production company: 48 Hours Theatre. She's written and staged multiple original works, including A Dead Rabbit, One by One, and When the Lights Go Out, and was a 2023 finalist for the Dramatists Guild Foundations National Fellows program for her play, 1976: A Motel. For the past decade, she's been working event logistics, publicity, and talent relations for large-scale events across the country, including the Oscars, The Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival, and over 100 film premieres, luncheons, screenings, and galas. She published her first novel, There's No Place Like House, in 2021 and has travelled from The Tattered Cover in Denver, CO to Prairie Lights in Iowa City for live readings and book signings. Her next book, Los Angeles: A Eulogy, is forthcoming. She is over the moon to be moving to Las Vegas with her banjo-playing husband and rescue pup, Olive, this summer to start this new chapter as a grad student at UNLV.
