Don't Get Stuck in Reverse: What NOT to Say at the Car Dealership (and What to Say Instead)
Did you know that according to a study by Edmunds, a leading car buying platform, 78% of car shoppers say negotiating the price is the most stressful part of the process? Saying the wrong thing at the dealership can definitely add to that stress, and could even cost you money!
This guide equips you with the knowledge of what NOT to say, while offering alternative approaches to secure the best deal on your dream car.
If you're in the market for a used car in New Jersey, it's essential to explore all your options to find the best deals. One way to do this is by considering cheap used cars in NJ. Websites like Tijara Autos offer a wide range of used vehicles at affordable prices. By visiting their vehicle listing page, you can browse through their inventory to find the perfect car that fits your budget and preferences. Whether you're looking for a compact sedan, a spacious SUV, or a fuel-efficient hybrid, Tijara Autos provides various options to suit your needs.
Phrases to Park in the Penalty Box:
Certain statements can give the salesperson the upper hand and weaken your bargaining position. Here are a few to avoid:
"I Need a Car Today!" Desperation is a salesperson's best friend. They'll be less likely to offer a discount if they know you're in a bind.
"What's Your Best Price?" This opens the negotiation at their preferred price, not yours.
"I Can Pay in Cash!" While tempting, blurting this out might incentivize them to raise the price instead of offering financing options that might benefit you.
"I Love This Car!" Revealing your emotions can make you less likely to walk away if the deal isn't ideal.
Focusing on Monthly Payments: This distracts you from the total cost of the car. Negotiate the final price first, then discuss financing options.
Shifting Gears: What to Say Instead
Here are some alternative phrases to empower you during negotiation:
"I've Been Pre-Approved for Financing at [Interest Rate]." This shows you're prepared and strengthens your bargaining position.
"I'm Also Considering [Other Car Makes/Models]." Lets them know you have options and keeps them competitive.
"Based on My Research, a Fair Price Would Be [Your Target Price]." Do your research and come armed with a realistic price point.
"Let Me Know When You Have a Counteroffer That Meets My Budget." Puts the ball back in their court and shows you won't budge easily.
"Thank You for Your Time, But I'll Keep Looking." Be prepared to walk away if the deal doesn't meet your needs.
Remember: Knowledge is Power!
Do your research beforehand:
Know the car's fair market value using Kelley Blue Book (KBB) or Edmunds.
Research similar car listings in your area to understand typical pricing.
Practice negotiating: Role-play with a friend or family member to feel confident.

Setting the Stage:
Buying a car can be an exciting but daunting experience, especially when it comes to negotiating the terms of the sale. Many buyers find themselves at a loss for words when faced with a savvy salesperson or overwhelmed by the pressure of making a decision on the spot. However, certain phrases and statements can inadvertently weaken your bargaining position and result in less favorable terms. By understanding what not to say when buying a car, you can avoid common pitfalls and increase your chances of securing a better deal.
Key Points:
1. "I Love This Car!":
Expressing too much enthusiasm for a particular car can signal to the salesperson that you're emotionally invested in the purchase, giving them leverage in negotiations.
Instead, maintain a poker face and keep your emotions in check. Remember, the goal is to negotiate from a position of strength and avoid tipping your hand too soon.
2. "I Need a Car Today":
Communicating a sense of urgency or desperation can put you at a disadvantage during negotiations. Salespeople may be less inclined to offer discounts or incentives if they sense that you're in a hurry to make a decision.
Instead, convey a sense of patience and willingness to explore all available options. Take your time to research different cars and dealerships before committing to a purchase.
3. "What's the Lowest Price You Can Offer?":
Asking for the lowest price upfront can limit your ability to negotiate effectively. Salespeople may quote you a higher price knowing that there's room for negotiation, resulting in a less favorable deal for you.
Instead, focus on gathering information about the car's features, condition, and market value before discussing price. This allows you to negotiate from a position of knowledge and clarity.
4. "I Can't Afford That":
Revealing your budget or financial constraints too early in the negotiation process can limit your bargaining power. Salespeople may be less inclined to offer discounts or incentives if they believe you're unable to pay more.
Instead, keep your budget information confidential and focus on negotiating based on the car's value and your preferences. Let the salesperson make the first move when it comes to discussing price.
5. "I'll Think About It":
Indicating that you need time to think about the offer can weaken your negotiating position. Salespeople may interpret this as a lack of commitment and be less motivated to offer discounts or incentives.
Instead, express interest in the car and ask for time to review the offer in detail. Use this time to gather additional information, compare prices, and consider your options before making a decision.

“vintage” - Jegulus microfic - @into-the-jeggyverse - 253 words

Regulus is standing with James in their garage looking at what is probably the saddest excuse for a car Regulus has ever seen.
“It’s old.” Regulus says.
“It’s vintage.” James counters.
“It’s ugly.” Regulus is walking around the car.
“It’s… okay, yes, it is ugly. But it won’t be when I’m done with it.” Regulus walks towards James with a skeptical look.
“I promise, it’ll be beautiful. You’ll see.” James tells him. “Please, can I keep it?” James pouts.
Regulus smiles fondly at James and wraps his arms around his waist.
“Jamie, you don’t need my permission to keep it. But I don’t understand why you don’t just want to buy a new car. You know, one that actually runs?” Regulus asks him.
“Restoring it, rebuilding it, is the whole point. It’s not just about the car, it’s about the process.” James has a glimmer in his eyes that makes him look absolutely beautiful.
“The process?” Regulus says, amused and endeared by how excited James is.
“Yes! It’ll be fun. Doesn’t it sound fun?” James runs his hand over the hood of the car and his finger tips turn black from the dust and dirt.
“It sounds dirty.” Regulus tells him.
“You don’t want to help?” James teasingly wiggles his fingers towards Regulus.
“I’ll watch.” Regulus grabs James’ wrist to avoid the dirt but uses his hold on him to pull James in for a kiss.
And Regulus quickly realizes that watching a sweaty, greasy, dirty James is, indeed, a lot of fun.

NEED HELP WITH CAR REPAIRS + FOOD + BILLS + TRANSPORTATION!
Tumblr media
PAYPAL | AMAZON WISHLIST | KOFI | GOFUNDME |PATREON | HOLIDAY WISHES LIST @ DREAMWIDTH
11/21/24 - New Post!
So we have a ton of bills and overdrafts to pay, including both of our PayPal accounts, but this holiday season I'm worried about food as well. We don't have working transportation, so I rely on delivery via DoorDash and Walmart+ to get my food. I can pay for both with PayPal, so if I can cover the $201 debt my mom owes, anything else will go to food purchases.
We also need to raise $3000 for the car repair, $565 for the movers and $600 to put towards rent. Any help with this would be amazing.
$1800/$6000
Also, if anyone wants to make the holiday season better, we could use anything for the home on our Amazon wish list or any of the fun stuff on our Holiday Wishes list, both of which are linked above. And I have my Patreon linked if you want to get short drabbles or graphics and help my income out every month as well!
EDIT: I desperately need the transport chair and all the accessories on my Amazon wishlist. My mom woke up last night too weak to walk, and she thinks she needs a wheelchair now. I have one that's a combo transport chair/walker with some accessories, but if anyone can help, that would be a huge help in keeping her mobile.
EDIT 2: I think my mom needs to go to the hospital, but I need about $275 to the PayPal to cover what's owed to PayPal and the rides itself. If anyone could help, I'd be most grateful.

Purchasing a Vehicle with Only an NJ Driver's License
Tumblr media
Purchasing a vehicle with only an NJ driver's license is a straightforward process, but it's important to navigate the steps correctly. Whether you're a new driver or a longtime resident, here's a comprehensive guide to help you smoothly transition from the dealership to the open road.
1. Prepare Your Documentation:
Ensure you have the necessary documentation ready before heading to the dealership:
NJ Driver's License: Your valid New Jersey driver's license is a primary form of identification.
Proof of Insurance: Contact your insurance provider to get proof of insurance for the new vehicle.
Proof of Residency: Some dealerships may require proof of your current address, such as a utility bill or lease agreement.
Payment Method: Decide on your preferred payment method, whether it's financing, a certified check, or another option.
2. Choose the Right Vehicle:
Determine your budget, preferences, and needs before stepping onto the dealership lot. Research different models, check reviews, and consider factors like fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, and insurance rates.
3. Visit the Dealership:
Once you've identified the vehicle you want, visit the dealership. Inform the salesperson that you have a valid NJ driver's license, and they will guide you through the necessary steps.
4. Test Drive and Inspection:
Take the car for a test drive to ensure it meets your expectations. Perform a thorough inspection or have a trusted mechanic examine it for any issues.
5. Negotiate the Price:
Negotiate the price of the vehicle based on your research and budget. Be prepared to discuss financing options if you're not paying in full.
6. Complete the Paperwork:
The dealership will provide you with the necessary paperwork. Carefully read and understand the terms before signing. This includes the sales contract, financing agreement (if applicable), and any additional documents.
7. Payment and Title Transfer:
Submit your payment using the agreed-upon method. The dealership will handle the title transfer process and may provide you with temporary tags or registration.
8. Insurance Activation:
Contact your insurance provider to activate coverage for the new vehicle. Provide them with the necessary details, including the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
9. Drive Away with Confidence:
With all the paperwork completed, payment settled, and insurance in place, you're ready to drive away in your new vehicle. Enjoy the journey on the roads of New Jersey!
Considerations Beyond NJ:
While an NJ driver's license is valid for identification purposes throughout the US, it alone doesn't guarantee the ability to purchase and register a vehicle outside of New Jersey. Here's what you need to consider:
Purchasing:
Dealership: Reputable dealerships typically handle most of the registration paperwork based on your driver's license information. Ensure they understand your residency status and handle registration accordingly.
Private Seller: Purchasing from a private seller in another state might be more complex. Some states mandate the buyer holds an in-state driver's license for registration. Consider temporary registration or third-party services for assistance.
Registering:
New Jersey: When registering the vehicle in New Jersey, you'll need to prove residency along with your NJ driver's license. Acceptable documents include utility bills, lease agreements, or bank statements with your NJ address.
Other States: If registering in another state, you might need to obtain an in-state driver's license depending on their policy. Research their specific requirements before purchase.
Additional Considerations:
Insurance: Ensure your car insurance covers the vehicle regardless of purchase location. Update your policy with the new vehicle information after purchase.
Sales Tax: You might be liable for sales tax in the purchase state or New Jersey, depending on their policies. Research and understand which state you owe sales tax to avoid double taxation.
Emissions Inspections: Some states require emissions inspections before registration. Check if your new vehicle needs one and where to get it done.
Overall:
Purchasing a vehicle with only an NJ driver's license outside of New Jersey can be done, but it requires understanding specific regulations and potential obstacles. Research the purchase state's laws, consider temporary permits or third-party services, and ensure you meet residency requirements for registering in New Jersey.

Saw a video on tiktok of someone re-binding a copy of the Hobbit and giving it a really beautiful new cover and I could not get the idea of Steve doing that for Eddie out of my head.
He hears Eddie mention in passing that he's always preferred homemade gifts (partly bc of the thought that goes into them but also because people spending money on him makes him uncomfortable) and Steve decides he needs to think of something he can make Eddie.
Steve may not be considered "clever" by the others but I'm convinced that boy is a do-er. When it comes to physical and practical skills, he will just learn and do it. He painstakingly researched and buys leather and special glue for book blinding, and even learns calligraphy so he can write beautifully on the inside cover.
And when he presents it to Eddie, wrapped in stiff expensive wrapping paper, Eddie asks where he got it and Steve says casually
"I made it"
As if he didn't spend months, didn't ruin at least 5 other copies of the Hobbit before he got it right, as if it wasn't so much work and time.
But Eddie gets it anyway, he understands and that's why he immediately bursts into tears.
