1930 Ford Highboy Coupe
There’s always lots of detail work with any build and this ’30 Ford highboy coupe is no exception. Look closely and you will find Craftworks Fabrication handmade steel motor mounts. The license plate and valve covers were painted by Jeremy Seanor of Luckystrike Designs. He also painted all the accompanying engine and tranny parts. The powdercoat was handled by Pittsburgh Powder Coat while the chrome plating was conducted by Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating.
The chassis is comprised of a Roadster Shop custom frame that was stepped, stretched, and features contoured ’32 Ford-style framerails. It was also then boxed, capped, and has hole punch flared front framehorns. From here the frame is outfitted with a Super Bell 4-inch drop, drilled and plated I-beam axle, low-profile monoleaf spring with Ridetech tubular shocks paired to custom-made drilled billet radius rods from Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop. Steering falls to the Flaming River box and a LimeWorks Hot Rod column topped with a four-spoke Billet Specialties Sprint Car–style leather-wrapped wheel. In back there’s a Currie 9-inch rearend outfitted with 3.70 gears, 31-spline axles, QA1 coilovers, a Pete & Jakes Panhard bar, and a parallel four-link setup. Braking is a combination of disc/drum front to rear. The forward braking dark gray–painted Wilwood Dynalite calipers are neatly hidden behind the Pete & Jakes finned backing plates. While in back the 9-inch is outfitted with 11-inch brakes, this time hidden beneath the SO-CAL Speed Shop finned drums all the while the chassis rides on a full set of 16-inch Dayton wire wheels wrapped with Coker/Excelsior rubber measuring 5.50R16 in front and 7.00R18 in the back.
All hot rods have something fun settled between the ’rails and beneath the hood (well if they have a hood). In the case of our ’30 Ford highboy coupe it sure appears to be a vintage Ford Y-block but after more than a cursory look we begin to see the telltale signs that there’s something more. Indeed, while it may look like a Ford it truly is a 376-inch LSX iron block, with aluminum heads and ARP studs, plus adapter-equipped small-block Ford (Windsor) valve covers all from Don Hardy Race Cars and then assembled by Talik and Marc Mullin. The intake is an Edelbrock LS dual quad with a pair of Thunder AVS EnduraShine carbs dressed in OTB air cleaners. Delivering the gas from the Tanks stainless reservoir is an Earl’s Performance billet fuel pump. More engine accessories include an MSD 6AL box to go along with the MSD billet Ford small-block distributor that functions through a timing cover adapter from Chevrolet Performance all the while using an MSD coil and Lokar vintage plug wires. Powermaster also supplied the alternator and starter, the battery is an XS Power AGM, and a Wegner Motorsports water pump is used as well as a Wegner front accessory drive unit. This 500-plus hp V-8 utilizes custom headers made at Craftworks Fabrication based on Ultimate Headers LS header flanges. The pseudo-Ford small-block is backed up to a TCI StreetFighter 700-R4 with a 2,800-stall speed converter operated by a Lokar shifter. The trans cooler comes by way of Derale Performance and moves the power through a 3-inch-diameter custom-made driveshaft.

Page 5. --- Pair to Be Sentenced Next Week ---- Hamilton Youths Help Correct Charges; Third Believed Involved --- Two Hamilton youths, who could be dubbed "Slim" and "Shorty," amused Magistrate D. M. Brodie in city police court today by their unsolicited assistance in correcting two of 11 charges of breaking, entering and theft., to which thev elected summary trial and pleaded guilty.
PLEAD GUILTY With their pleading guilty to the charges, police rubbed their hands together and closed their files on the string of local school and service station break-ins. The youths were remanded in custody one week for sentence. The two, slim Douglas Bridgewood, 21, and short stocky, John Ellis, 19, were taken into custody in a downtown hotel, along with an industrial plant worker, who subsequently was charged with vagrancy and released on a personal bond today to appear later.
Constables Roy Brunt, Alfred Carter and Robert Irwin, became suspicious over the pair's activities when it as discovered that they were involved in stamp selling, the stamps having been stolen from one of the schools.
LOOT RECOVERED Police said that most of the loot involved had been recovered. To one charge, breaking into the Martin Service Station, 122 Tecumseh road, November 23. and stealing 300 gasoline ration tickets, four pen type flashlights, four large flashlights, $5 Canadian and $2 U.S. currency, the property of James Collins, fair-haired Bridgewood replied:

Do you have any pictures of the Mustang!!! I love the older ones, 86 was the Fox Body style right?
I’ve only got a couple, but yeah! Its the 1986 Mustang GT with the 302 5.0 Windsor V8. It’s the small block, compared to the 351 5.8 Windsor.
We’ve already done a lot of work to the back end- New brakes, shocks, fuel lines, fuel pump and float, and a brand new fuel tank that we haven’t put in just yet. We’ve been working on getting the Differential in better shape over all, so that’s whats stopping the tanks progress. It got super hot also, so we stopped.
86 was the first year they introduced EFI, so no carb for me :( But thats okay! I love this little beast and I’m excited to tear ass down the road in it.
We’re going to go through the rest of it and replace whatever we need to. When we brought her over to garage her, the only things that were keeping her from at least turning over was the fuel pump and the battery, but this car is 33 years old and has been sitting for at least 15 of them. She’s been in our garage for like 10 of em.
It remains to be seen if we’re going to pull the engine, but I suppose that’ll be determined by the ability to start it when we’re done farting around with the fuel tank and the battery.
Im just amped for the weather to get nicer so we can get back to work!

The engine is not original or numbers matching but it is a powerful, rebuilt 351 Windsor that has less than 3,000 miles on it, and comes paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. The exterior is a beautiful metallic red and the interior of the car is a red and white 2-tone vinyl.
The overall condition of the car is a show quality of 8 out of 10. Some of the notable features of the car are as follows; power steering, power brakes, owned since the 1960s, the undercarriage has been sprayed, white wall tires, bench seat, 2nd owner car, gas lines have been replaced and flushed, retro radio, new rubber bushing for the steering column, new ignition, battery. It also comes with the soft and hardtop but the hardtop does need to be restored. It also comes with tons of extra parts and a set of seat belts.
Some of the minor issues with the car are as follows; minor chips in the paint but overall the paint is great, glove box needs a new latch, and the upholstery on the interior needs some minor TLC. The car has a clean title, fresh fluids, and is insured for test rides.

As if to supplement their comrade's reference to the wage-level, such comments as the following came in from all corners: "He offered me 50 cents for two and a half hours of driving a truck": "Here's a Rose Park Drive job offering 12 1-2 cents an hour for garden work"; "The Board of Education gave us 8 cents per window (Inside and out) without safety-belts three stories up, and we worked for three and a half days under that contract and got $4. after supplying our own equipment": and "I was sent out to mow a lawn the other day. The lady supplied the equipment. I got 25 cents for the Job, which cost me two car tickets."
Most Married, With Families. Most of these workless men are married, have families, and have permanent relationship with the Welfare Department. It was here that the fact emerged indicating that "our main worry is how to keep a roof between us and the sky." A few disheartening details as to "evictions" and "keeping on the move" were here given.

The Soft Return: An Interview with Robyn Hitchcock, 2002
Sunday interview! Robyn has to be one of the easiest interviews ever ... you just let him talk. Amazing how long ago this was -- we could have a 40 year Underwater Moonlight reunion reissue in a couple years.
Few fans of English singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock could have predicted that the 21st century would see so much activity from his former band, the Soft Boys. But Hitchcock's long, winding and wonderful career has been nothing if not unpredictable. As a result of the reissue of the band's undisputed 1980 pop masterpiece, Underwater Moonlight, and the reunion tour that followed last year, the Soft Boys have, more than 20 years later, recorded that album's follow-up, Nextdoorland.
Out now on Matador Records, the album is a loose-limbed, psychedelic romp. Hitchcock's distinctive lyrical flair is in fine form, and the guitar interplay between him and guitarist Kimberley Rew reaches transcendent heights on "Mr. Kennedy" and "Unprotected Love." Nextdoorland's greatest success, however, is that it captures that tangled, glorious sound that countless fans have fallen in love over the past two decades. The band is on the eve of a US tour in support of the record, but Robyn took a break from rehearsals to chat with Junkmedia.
So where are you right now?
I'm on the ground floor of my house, next to a bicycle, which is leaning against a kind of wheel, like the wheel of a ship. You know, the thing the captain used to steer on the deck of an old sailing ship. It's actually the wheel of my girlfriend's etching press. And I'm sitting on top of a tiny little covered chest of drawers, which is about ten inches high. I'm staring at my 12-string guitar, which is in the distance. That's where I am. Where are you?
I'm in Boston, Massachusetts. In my kitchen.
Ah yes, you sound quite reverberant.
Yeah, I wanted the best acoustics possible. I guess I'll start with the most obvious question here: After 20 years as a solo artist, why did you decide to go back to the Soft Boys at this point?
Well, I'll give you the condensed version of the story. It had been 21 years since the Soft Boys' Underwater Moonlight had come out, and it was out of print. So we figured we should get it re-released. So I got in touch with Matador to see if they'd do it. And the rest of the Soft Boys, we thought, "Why don't we do a 21st anniversary tour?" The Soft Boys had never had very much clout originally—we could never manage to properly tour in the US. We could barely tour in Britain. But the Soft Boys had become quite successful posthumously. My career spring-boarded the Soft Boys, in a way. Quite a lot of people got to hear the band through me.
Yeah, you've been playing those songs live from the very start of your solo career.
Yeah, [fans] just discovered my work and then went back and discovered the Soft Boys. So, as I've always been the guy in favor of the hand on the clock running backwards, that was fine with me. So there we were, we had [the reissue of Underwater Moonlight] out, we said we'd do a tour to go with it, we got together and auditioned ourselves, and it looked as though there was just about enough juice left in the batteries. The other subtext is that, although it's indeed been 21 years since the Soft Boys dissolved, I have obviously worked with drummer Morris [Windsor] and Kimberley and bassist Matthew [Seligman] in the intervening period.
So it wasn't like you guys were long lost compatriots then.
No, I mean, that particular combination of the band hadn't worked at the time. But Morris and I did ten years as Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, and Matthew was on my first couple of solo projects—I used to record demos round at his flat in the mid-'80s. In other words, [the reunion of the band] is not quite as dramatic as it sounds.
The Soft Boys have become known over the years as the band that never really fit in during its time; you didn't fit in with punk, you didn't fit in with New Wave. Where do you suppose the band fits in now? Or do you fit in at all?
Oh, totally. We fit in musically the same way the Beatles do. We don't fit in the way the Beatles do as icons, or as a cultural phenomenon. But in terms of the way the songs are written, and the way the instruments go together, and the three voices singing harmony. Really, all my solo stuff has that, but with the Soft Boys it's even more Beatles-y, because you've got the two-guitar dynamic going. Nextdoorland reminds me of the White Album, really. Something like "My Mind is Connected to Your Dreams" — it's got no overdubs, it's just the four instruments sort of sublimely fighting for their own place without treading on each other. We're not doing anything in unison, we're just finding our own way of complementing each other.
Yeah, that's one of the best things on the album—the guitar interplay between you and Kimberley. Was that something that you two were able to just pick up from where you had left off, or did it take some work?
That was an interesting strand to the group getting back together. But I think it had to do with the both of us getting older really. We both had had the careers that we wanted. Maybe in the days of the Soft Boys we were kind of like the young pods that hadn't quite opened out entirely yet. He basically wrote pop songs and wanted to be in a pop group, and I didn't. I wanted to be a cult figure, really.
Is that what you always wanted to be? Someone appreciated by a select few?
Yeah, I remember telling the man from NME when I was a kid I wanted to be on the "cult fringe." Because the people I like, as is very well documented, are now known as "cult figures." Except the Beatles, obviously, they're the kind of universal anchorage, if you like. So this is simplifying it all quite a bit, but Kim went and had his worldwide classic hit [Katrina and the Waves' "Walking On Sunshine"], which shows no signs of going away just yet.
I think I heard it on a car commercial here in the States recently.
Yeah, yeah. And I—well, you know, I have my career. I imagine it will carry on doing the kind of things it does, being the kind of animal it is, if I feed it the right things. I just write songs and put them out on records. So I think, Kim and I, both having done that, having had our careers, it happened that five or six years ago, we just started turning up at one another's gigs. You know, if I played in Cambridge, he'd turn up and play on the encore. And then I'd be playing in London and I'd say, "Well, why don't you come down and play?" Kim will drive a hundred miles to play three songs. He's lovely like that. He lives for music. And then I'd be doing some session, and I'd say, "Well, why don't you come along and play on this song?" And then he got me to play on his solo things, and it just sort of grew from there.
Well, it sounds great. I saw you guys last year at Maxwell's [in Hoboken, NJ], and the best thing about it was how natural and unforced the whole reunion seemed. A lot of times, the rock "reunion" tours should be approached with caution. I guess other bands that get back together after so many years seem to be competing with their younger selves in a way, but the band didn't seem to be doing that at all. Maybe it's the type of music, or that you guys aren't identified with any image or scene...
Well, on the whole, we never wanted to be popular. We weren't popular. We weren't famous. We didn't even have a record deal. So we don't have much to live up to in terms of the past. I mean, we're not trying to recapture some glorious moment when we were young, beautiful and rich. Well, we were young and beautiful, two out of the three. But we weren't vain.
I only discovered vanity posthumously. I look at these old photos of the Soft Boys and I think, "Oh my God, we were so good looking!" [Laughs] And we didn't do a thing about it! We dressed like '60s kids and got a bit of grief for having long hair, since at the time you were meant to have short hair. But there's lots of groups coming up now that look like us, like '60s kids. My analogy is the stopped clock: you know, the stopped clock is right twice a day.
So, you know that when you're younger, you play faster and you're more intense. And you probably ejaculate quicker during sex—this is from the male perspective obviously—and you can fit into size 28 trousers, and you can smoke forty cigarettes a day, drink ten pints and then get up the next day and repeat the process. [Laughs] And when you're 50 ...
What, you can't do that anymore?
Well, you can do all that, but you have to try harder. [Laughs]
I see.
I think one thing I knew very early on was that older people are going to slow down and you are unfortunately going to "mellow out," so you may as well accept that. You know when we play things now from older records, we play them slower, the tempo slows down considerably. We played [a recording of] "The Queen of Eyes" at the Fillmore last year against "The Queen of Eyes" recorded in 1980 at Alaska Studios, and we're playing it at half speed now! You know, we have to have stops for hits from the oxygen masks halfway through. But we know that, and we're not attempting to mask anything. It's like you only make yourself look older by dyeing your hair. Actually, I think this tour you will actually see Kimberley and I wearing glasses on stage, just so we can get a proper look at the fret board.
That should be a rock and roll first. Did the band go into the recording of this new album with any hesitation? You are, after all, following up what is routinely called a "classic album." Did it feel like you were facing up against a hard thing to best?
Well, as you say, it's all a given now. Just as you know you're going to get older, you know what you did in the past is beloved. With Underwater Moonlight—people like it. Because they've heard it before. I mean it's good, the same way the Beatles albums are good or great or whatever, but people like what they're familiar with. Underwater Moonlight is a core album and is now very familiar, so people are very happy with it.
So, obviously, a new record is a terrible thing, because [laughs] we're trading on people's good will by being the Soft Boys. As long as we play "Insanely Jealous" and "The Queen of Eyes"—that's what we're paid to do, that's what people come out to see. It's not exactly to be our younger selves but to be a reasonable approximation, to have the same posture and to hit the same note. To be a reasonable facsimile of your younger self. And that's fine, none of us are obese, none of us have gone bald. But still, making a new album is really a kind of rotten trick, it's not something that you're meant to do.
Right, you're supposed to be sort of frozen in history.
Yeah, but the thing is, I still write songs. I love writing songs. When the opportunity to work together again came up, to me, what made it exciting wasn't getting together and working out "Only the Stones Remain" again but actually using that rehearsal time to see if the Soft Boys could produce something new. And I think that forces the band muscle to flex, and it makes it into a living thing, not just, well, "We can certainly do Underwater Moonlight." I just thought, "Great, I've got them all here, we can arrange a bunch of new songs." And they were all happy to do that.
Were the songs written with the Soft Boys specifically in mind?
No, the record is kind of in chronological order, with a few exceptions. "I Love Lucy," the first song, was actually recorded at the last session. On the whole, though, the songs drift on towards the end—"Lions and Tigers" and "Japanese Captain" are both very Soft Boys and were written with them in mind. And "Strings" is actually pretty direct from the band.
I noticed there were a few collaborative efforts from the band: "I Love Lucy" and "Strings." Is that a first for the band?
Yeah, [both of those songs] are total group arrangements. Whereas "My Mind is Connected to Your Dreams" and some others were things I had worked out beforehand. Although when I was writing a few of those, in the back of my mind, I thought they would be really good with the Soft Boys.
So would you say that Nextdoorland is a new beginning for the band, or a sort of tying up of loose ends?
Neither, really. I see it as a kind of checking in with time. You know, as we sink into the parking lot known as "middle age," beyond which there is only one further and more terminal parking lot, for us it's good to check in. It's not exactly looking back at our younger selves, it's simply marking the way time has passed through us all. I think that's psychologically what it's about, and whether we do another one or not doesn't matter. No one thought we'd be doing [the new record], really. It's obviously not Underwater Moonlight, the songs are nothing like the songs on that record.
I remember seeing you play solo a few years ago, and after playing "Insanely Jealous," you said something like "Thank God I don't write songs like that anymore."
Right, yeah. And it's not to put the song down, but it's just good that I'm not in that state of mind anymore. But again, that's the difference between being 25 and 50. It's not like one age is better than the other, they're just different. You just do what's appropriate to each age.
You mentioned "Strings," and I really enjoy that on the new album. Now, I know you dedicated "I Wanna Destroy You" to George W. Bush on last year's tour. Does he creep into this song as well? I guess specifically it's the lines "Evil is the new enemy / Evil is the new bad."
Yeah, 9/11 occurred about halfway through that song being written, and he'd made some kind of inane speech like that. You know, "We'll go out and find evil and kill it!" [Laughs] It's like the old Chaucer story where the men go looking for Death. There's three of them, and they're all going to a medieval bar, and someone decides to have some fun with them—he may even be Death himself—and he buys them all drinks and he tells them all about this guy, Death. He says, "Death beat me up and stole all my money and killed my family." And the guys say, "Wow, we'll sort this guy Death out for you." And the guy at the bar says, "You wanna find Death? If you go dig under that tree, you'll find him." So they all go out and dig under the tree, and they find a bag of gold coins. And of course during the night, the three manage to kill each other. So you know, Bush's smarts are on that level. I mean, he's our president, too.
Yeah, it does seem like more and more, the rest of the world ought to be voting in the US presidential elections. That might fix some things. Switching gears a bit, I wanted to ask you a bit about the label you run through your Web site [Editions PAF]. Do you have any more releases in the pipeline for that?
[Having my own label] is basically like being a tortoise and having your home on your back. I'm not contracted to a record company right now. Matador released Moonlight and they're doing this one as well, but who knows whether I or the Soft Boys will do anything with them in the future. I think since I left Warner Bros. and the Internet has become more potent, it's become useful for me to have my own sort of nuclear shelter, if you like, my own module that I can huddle in with my goods.
David Greenberger, who runs the Duplex Planet, runs the label for me as well. So I've got my "Robyn Hitchcock Module" that I can survive in and sell my records, and other old stuff. So, to answer your initial question, I think what I'll probably do is start putting out my back catalog—the stuff that was put out on Rhino a few years back is all out of print now—and maybe I'll put out a new album, I don't know.
Actually, I was interviewing someone a while back who was on your old label, A&M, and he said it was incredibly difficult to get a hold of his old master tapes, seeing as how the label barely exists anymore.
Well, it's just some warehouse in Burbank, and there's some guy sitting there with this supply of candles. And he waits until one candle burns right down to the stub and then he blows it out. And then he pulls a lighter out of his pocket and lights a new candle and puts it on top of his desk. And the camera pans back, and you see that he's all alone in this huge, dark warehouse. Bright California sun is beating down outside and he's sitting there with one glowing candle and thousands of master tapes, the whole A&M back catalog. I'm not sure I'm even going to attempt to dig that stuff up. But I do have the rights to the rest of it.
I don't know if you're tired of being asked about it, but I've been hearing about a novel you've been working on for a while now. Will that see the light of day anytime in the near future?
No, not as yet. The last draft of it went 'round to some people, but everybody thought it was a bit... uh... "surreal" was the word I had heard coming back to me. I don't know what they expected, really. [Laughs] Anyway, I'm sure it'll turn up in some shape or form. It's not imminently going to be published. I'm re-writing it all the time.
So it's not in its finished state, waiting to be bound and sent to the stores, I take it. Is it safe to say the novel is along the lines of some of the stories you've written that have been included with your albums?
Well, if you can imagine one of those stories breeding into a much longer story. That's been one of the problems—it's been quite hard to control. Because a song, you can listen to it in three minutes. You can stand back from it. But a book takes eight or nine hours to read. I've probably read it through twice over the last five years, and each time I've done it I've been changing it. I suppose it's not my primary job, so it doesn't get the quality time. It's always done in secondary time, whatever that is. But the book is pretty identifiably "me."
The Soft Boys are going on tour in October, right? Are you guys fervently rehearsing, or are you the type of band that doesn't need that kind of thing?
We've had a few run-throughs, nothing too strenuous.
Are you going to lean heavily on the new songs?
Oh no, that would be cruel. We'll do some more old songs, some of the ones we didn't get to last time. Because I think that's primarily what people are coming to see us for. I think even if you're a current act, people don't want to see you do your new album. The further you go back, the happier they are.
