The Batman/Captain America Crossover is just a treasure trove of goodness
First you have cute little Dick glaring at the Nazi with his arms crossed: >:(
Tumblr media
Bucky bragging about having the better mentor 😂
Tumblr media
Lmao imagine walking into the bat cave and finding a 100ft tall playing card of Joker - BATMAN WHY?
Tumblr media
Bucky calling Dick a shrimp! Ngl I was expecting Dick to beef right back. Bucky reminds me of Roy sm in this comic.
Tumblr media
Even the Joker joining into fight the Nazi villain! Best villain vs villain battle!! He’s literally like “I’m crazy and evil but not that crazy and evil”
Tumblr media
The crossover teamups!
Tumblr media
Bruce bragging to Bucky about being cooler. He totally didn’t forget that comment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS ONE! THE ICONIC “MY LEGS ARE TOO LONG FOR THIS CHAIR IM GONNA SLOUCH” POSE. Batman invented this before it ever came into the 21st century.
Tumblr media
And finally, it all begins again!
Tumblr media
Dick!Bats and Bruce Wayne Jr!Robin break Cap out of the ice and then the marvel movies begin. Avengers Assemble!
I nearly forgot - Dick and Bucky get stranded in the middle of nowhere farm and have to radio in to get Batman and Cap to pick them up. It was very “when are you coming?” And “oh shit! I knew we forgot something!!”

Time to introduce some more (unofficial) members of the team, right?
Excerpt:
Chapter 12 - MIA
Camp Victory
“Hey, yo man!” Clint's voice shows his good mood. He smiles and greets the soldiers who cross his path. Casually walking through the camp, just the sight of the familiar buildings and the constant hustle and bustle brings back old memories for him. A touch of nostalgia is in the air and makes him pause briefly to turn around.
He has completed countless missions with Bucky and the other guys; they have been a well-rehearsed team in which everyone could rely on the other. Returning from missions was always special. After all, at the beginning of an assignment you could never tell whether you would make it back unscathed or even alive. He’s aware that this came with the job, but it often was overlooked that this brought a lot of tension to relationships back home. He’d experienced that too often.
Just like Bucky had. But both he and his friend do their best to establish a working relationship with their significant other despite all odds. And so far everything has gone fairly well. Nevertheless, he understands Lily all too well and knows that she was already longingly counting the days until her husband's return.
Who could blame her? Laura had done exactly the same thing.
After leaving active service, Clint had tried to live a normal life at home on his farm for a while. But what’s the definition of normal? Surely Laura had breathed a sigh of relief when he had completed his last tour. And he really tried. After his return, he began to spruce up the farmhouse and then the extensive area around the house.
But it was difficult for him. His thoughts were constantly circling back around to his company. As a sniper, he was something of a guardian angel for his comrades. And God knows, he loved his job. He helped to eliminate dangerous men, always hoping to make the world a little safer.
Unfortunately, this was a fallacy. The war is still in full swing and every day he hears about the official losses on both sides. He knows all too well from his own experience that reality is often different. Therefore, he’s lucky to have someone who can assist him in special cases without the bureaucracy. When it comes to obtaining reliable information unofficially, all he has to do is turn to Natasha Romanoff and he would gain access to data obviously not intended for the public.
The former secret agent worked in the background, pulling the strings necessary to make the interactions between everyone involved as smooth as possible. Over the years they had built up a close relationship of trust, and they are always in close contact.
“Hey, pencil pusher!”
“I'll never get rid of that title, will I?” Clint laughs out loud as he walks past a group of soldiers. He can't blame them, though. When he was still in the service, he had felt the same way about those whose job he’s doing now. But now, he has experienced himself how hard the job of the “pencil pusher” actually is. Some fought against the enemy, others - including him - against the bureaucracy.
"No, that’s for sure."
“To each his own!” he shouts after them without any resentment. He’s looking for Bucky to tell him good news. It’s just after 0100 hours, so most of the crew has already eaten lunch. Which in turn means that the sergeant will most likely be at Alpine's to give her some treats he has picked up from the canteen.
Pushing his sunglasses up to his forehead, Clint steps to the gate. “What are my decrepit eyes seeing?!”
Alpine doesn't come running towards him as usual, because she’s busy taking care of her kids.
“Since when?” he asks Torres, who is adding fresh straw to the small shelter that serves as sun and rain protection.
“It started last night. The two of them were there this morning,” Torres replies, brushing off his dusty gloves and walking towards Clint.
“And where is the new father?” Clint wants to know, letting his eyes wander.
Torres sucks in a sharp breath.
“What?” Clint asks immediately, noticing his counterpart’s reaction. “Don’t tell me he passed out? How will he react when I tell him that there’ll be a serving of a big, fat turkey on Thanksgiving? But hey,” he winks at Torres, “you didn’t get that from me, okay? I mean, I-"
“Didn’t you hear?” Joaquín interrupts his flow.
Clint frowns. "What do you mean?"
“Bravo Company was attacked and went missing.”
“Oh shit,” Clint blurts out. “But Miller is a tough guy who will-”
“The Sarge was there,” Torres adds. “Miller last clocked in 48 hours ago. The last radio messages from Sarge or Bell came almost 24 hours ago. Since then … nothing. Miller's Humvee was found burned out by aerial surveillance. There were no survivors.”
“Stop bullshitting,” Clint says. “You’re kidding me?”
Torres shakes his head in silence.
“But why… is Bucky with Bravo Company?” He can't really believe it yet.
“He was assigned at short notice,” replies Joaquín.
They are now facing each other. Clint can see the concern on the younger man's face. "Wait a minute! You said there were no survivors. And yet… there was a radio message from Bucky?”
“The unit was traveling with two Humvees. Miller's was destroyed, all occupants ... Miller and Jackson, as well as two civilians ... were found dead. There is no trace of the Humvee in which the Sarge was traveling with Bell and two other civilians.”
Clint raises his chin defiantly. “Okay, that’s a ray of hope.” In fact, a completely different scenario is running through his mind at the same time. Kidnapping and torture of foreign, especially American soldiers are not uncommon. However, he decides to rule out this option for now. “Bucky knows what to do.”
“I still have a really bad feeling about it.”
“What do you know about the mission?”
“Pretty much nothing,” Torres shrugs. “It was a very short-term thing. Some NGO workers who should be brought back. Colonel Fury isn't giving out any information. I only know about the Humvees from hearsay.”
“Fury,” Clint rolls his eyes. Then he puts his hands on his hips, looks at a point in the distance, narrows his eyes, and mulls over the situation at hand. “Okay, okay,” he mumbles, going through the options in his head. He needs more information to assess the situation better. In these kinds of cases, the right people who can give you this data are worth their weight in gold. “Maybe I should call in a few favors.”
Joaquín has secretly hoped to hear something like that, but he also knows that it’s difficult - or rather, forbidden - to act arbitrarily within the chain of command. A hopeful smile appears on his face. "Thanks."
“I can’t promise anything,” Clint reminds him.
“Understood,” Torres nods. “But at least I know you’re doing something. Nothing’s coming from the leadership.” He looks at his watch, “I have to go. Thanks again.”
“No problem, man.” As he watches Torres leave, he pulls his cell phone out of his pocket. With just a few clicks, he has established a secure connection and is waiting for his call to be answered. After the third ringtone the voicemail starts. “Hey Nat. Call me as soon as you hear this." Then he hangs up and puts the phone back in his pocket.
In the meantime, Alpine has trotted towards him and lets out a loud bleat.
Clint opens the gate and enters to kneel in front of her. In return, she immediately nudges him, smells him, and licks the material of the T-shirt. Whatever the reason, she finds it interesting enough to chew on a corner of it. “Don't do that,” he says with a grin, which Alpine takes as an opportunity to complain loudly. The animal seems restless. With her golden yellow eyes she keeps a careful eye on the surroundings, her ears steadily turning like she probably is waiting to hear a familiar voice. “Hey, old girl,” he whispers to her as he scratches the shaggy fur. “You miss him, huh? But don't worry. I'll take care of it."

Alyona (A-lona) Romanova-Barnes
Alias: Wolf Spider, Brown Recluse, Subject 3, Lonnie
Age: 18
Place of Birth: South Siberian Mountains
Parents: James Barnes, Natalia Romanov
Affiliations: Russia, Red Room (defunct), U.S. government
Abilities: super spy, super soldier, red room serum
Universe: Earth 616
Origin:
Alyona's creation start well before her time with the start of the Wolf Spider program by the Red Room. The Winter Soldier was used to train Constantin and was punished greatly when he failed. Dimitri Petrov was the scientist in charge and knew he would be next. Dimitri stole his unstable red room serum and gave it to his oldest son Sergei at 9 years old. The Winter Soldier killed both Dimitri and his wife leaving their two sons in care of the state. Sergei, much like the wolf-spider volunteer, was hostile and full of rage. Yet he was able to pull it together in order to get his doctorate.
The Russian Government became tired of the failures of the Red Room and largely stopped funding. However, they turned their interest to the young Sergei Ivanov (who changed his name in his youth). He proposed the idea of a soldier who was given no identity and knew nothing but Russia. It was a way to keep the Red Room in check and kill anymore subjects who went out of line. Of course, Sergei had his own plan in mind. Alyona's targets would be anyone associated with the Red Room.
Using D.N.A. from both Natasha Romanov and James Barnes, Sergei made several attempts to grow a child and eventually was successful. However, a girl was not pleasing to many funders. Alyona was dubbed subject 3 and was fed Russian propaganda from the moment she could breath. Isolated deep in the mountains of Siberia, Alyona was given no name, no parents, no background. She learned to talk from the history videos and Sergei barking orders. As soon as she could walk, she started training and had schooling by several child specialist one of them being Nikita Alexovna. Alyona started killing at a young age and was adept at hand-to-hand combat, espionage, and weapons. Her targets she was forced to kill were mainly red room survivors or retired government officials who approved the program. What Sergei did not plan for was Alyona's temper and stubbornness. She was often punished harshly by Sergei himself or left outside with nothing but her tanktop in the Siberian winter. After a particularly harsh beating, Nikita bandaged her wounds. This was one of her first kind memories.
Alyona was able to sneak into Sergei's private quarters with Nikita's key and read his files on her parents. She kept her head down and behaved herself. Soon she was on her first kill outside of the base. Her target was Katerina, a KGB agent and one of the founders of the Red Room. She wasn't able to pull the trigger and went on the run. Wanted by not only Sergei's guards but also the Russian government once they discovered their plan. She went into hiding deep in the forests at the edge of Moscow.
Hydra also heard of the opportunity to steal a Russian asset. Alyona was swarmed by Hydra agents that Captain America and Black Widow were tracking. Black Widow helped to guide her to cover. Sergei arrived with his personal soldiers. While fighting, Sergei yelled out "Laika". Alyona's main mission was started and immediately started to fight Bucky. He avoided her blows the best he could and was able to talk her down. Alyona was able to resist her programming albeit painfully. Natasha and Bucky were able to get her out before Russian forces came. Sergei was arrested by Russian forces after discovering his long list of government officials killed by Alyona. The officials still have a watch out for Alyona. Alyona was rendered unconscious and was unable to be awaken. SHIELD doctors discovered a chip in her neck that allowed them to control her, make her unconscious, and even had a kill switch. They were able to remove it safely leaving a small scar on the back of her neck. The relationship with her parents was rocky at first. She refused to trust Bucky until he showed her his red star. Bucky proceeded to train her and nickname her "Lonnie" and she got extremally close to her mom
Other Comic Tie-ins:
During the Siege of Asgard, Alyona watched her father be killed on T.V. and struggled while he was in the hospital.
The Breakup - When Leo kidnapped and brainwashed Natasha, he also targeted her daughter and wanted her to call him "dad". When Bucky left, Alyona was raised by Natasha and solely used the last name of Romanov. Natasha believed that Alyona was created from her DNA and a random red room donor. Bucky regularly called and checked on his daughter despite the face she often told her she hated him.
Captain America going Hydra: Alyona joined the army at 18 wanting to find herself and truing believing that her only point in life is to be a soldier. Once Captain America took over as a Hydra agent, Alyona abandoned the army not wanting to help Hydra and joined the underground. She spoke at her mother's funeral.
Afterwards: Alyona began her own vigilante work and really became her own person. Without Shield, the U.S. government hired Alyona and a few other military personnel to be trained to handle espionage and Hydra. This included working largely with the OFU along with Ian Rogers.
Natasha's revival: Alyona struggled to bond with her mom after she was cloned because she felt she wasn't real. When Natasha was brainwashed into her life with Stevie and James, Alyona was pulled in from a mission by her aunt Yelena and told the news. She was hesitant but agreed to let her be happy. After all, it’s been a rough few years. Albeit, she still felt hurt that she was not included in her mom’s perfect life. This was purposeful in the plan because Madame Hydra did want her daughter’s namesake to affect the brainwashing.

No because thats the whole point.
Shield was built and founded with Hydra already a part of it and using names like Bucky and Steve to prop it up. You think Peggy and Howard could have done it without the credit the two gave to their names? Peggy was a spy and Howard was an engineer. Their connections to Captain America and the Howling Commandos gave them the respectability to start Shield. Bucky was a martyr and a means to an end being used by an agency that kept him locked in their basement. Regardless of Shield's intentions all they ended up being was a respectable face on something gruesome. Like putting Bucky's name on the wall
How many Hydra agents walked past it knowing that Bucky was alive being tortured and brainwashed by their people? How many times did Shield agents justify what they were doing using men like Bucky as an excuse? Shield rotted from the inside wearing Bucky's and so many other's names to try and make themselves look unblemished, even Howard and Peggy got this treatment.
And it fucks me up because obviously not everyone at Shield was a Hydra agent. Most believed they were genuinely doing good work. Every janitor and HR manager and IT worker and intern and night guard and graphic designer could walk past that wall and see Bucky's name, and see all those names, and think: "I'm doing good, I'm working for something making the world a better place". Not realising that every little thing they do that helps any of the Hydra agents in Shield, even if its bringing Pierce his fucking coffee in the morning, helped with the pain and suffering inflicted on Bucky and every person Hydra hurt. And there was nothing they could do about it except look at that fucking wall and think what a shame it is that Bucky 'died'
I think the biggest and sickest joke in the world is Bucky Barnes having his name engraved in a memorial wall in a Shield building.
The same organisation that employed his captor and torturer.
Who is to say Armin Zola, Alexander Pierce, or other Hydra agents didn't walk in that very same building. Passed that wall, saw the name, and chuckled at their sick inside joke.

Chapter 1
Bucky's ears tingled with the sound of Cass and Aj's voices echoing through the house as they played, along with the clatter of feet smacking against the wood floors and laughter. A smile crept its way to Bucky's face as himself and Sam walked down the drive to Sarah's house, upon hearing the chaos that ensued inside. The sun beamed down in golden streams lighting the path towards the house, that's when he saw her, sitting on the front lawn with Sarah, smile on her face, eyes gleaming and laughing along with something Sarah had said to her. He felt it instantly in his chest, his heart stopped for a minute.
"You okay, Cyborg?" Sam nudged his vibranium arm arching his brow in question. "Yeah, yeah sorry, thought I forgot my keys but we're good" Sam side eyed him but continued down the path to the house.
"Sam! Bucky! Hey! Kids your uncle Sam is here!" Sarah called out to the boys, rising from her seated position from the floor, her unknown companion says something about drinks and heads inside, not before turning her head and nodding towards the two men. "Hey baby sis" Sam engulfs her in a hug as the pair reach, her reply about not being a baby is muffled by Sam's chest which gains a laugh from Bucky. "How are you guys doing?" Bucky asks as they split, nodding his head towards the house.
"You know, we're good, busy as ever, the kids miss their uncle though" she nudges Sam. "Hey, not just anyone can be Captain America, think of the street cred those kids will get" Sarah and Bucky both roll their eyes scoffing in unison. "Anyway I have a question, who was your hot friend that was sitting with you?" Sam wiggled his eyebrows smirking looking back towards the house, where you could be seen in the kitchen window making a pitcher of lemonade.
"Sam! That's my friend Y/n, she lives next door, and she has a bakery in town" She sighed as she answered knowing she couldn't avoid the question. "Yeah, yeah okay, but is she single" Sam enquired rather pointedly. "Not for you, she's not, stay away Sam! I'm serious she got out of a real bad relationship and she doesn't want to date!" Bucky couldn't help but feel his own heart break a bit, he didn't know what was wrong with him, he hadn't even met you. Just as Sam was about respond, no doubt some witty comment about being the hero to sweep you off your feet, the sound of the front door opening interrupted them, Cass and AJ came out carrying a pitcher and glasses placing them on the outdoor table before pouncing towards their uncle and his friend. But Bucky couldn't keep his eyes off the front door as you emerged with a little boy attached to your hip, he pointed at the sky and muttered something as your pointed back a smile adorning your face as you approached the group.
"Hey" you breathed out as you reached everyone, standing next to Bucky, you couldn't help but feel judged as you felt his strong gaze unwavering on you and your son. You didn't know much about Bucky, just what Sarah had told you, the former Winter Solder turned good guy, born in 1917, Hydra captive then the Wakandans broke his trigger words or something like that. But why was he staring at you, was it because there was no apparent ring on your ring finger and you had a baby, you knew he was from a different time but surely he didn't think so outdated. "Hi, I'm Bucky" he extends his had to you, you shake it nervously, unwrapping one arm from your child to do so. "Y/n".
"Hi I'm Sam, and who's this little guy?" Sam gives you a wave, then tilts his head smiling at the boy in your arms, who buries his head in your chest at the sudden attention. "Oh this is Forrest, you gonna say hi baby" you tickle the babies belly erupting the sweetest giggle from him as he nuzzles further into your chest, "sorry he's shy around new people" you smile stroking his curls away from his eyes. "Aw just like you Bucky" Sam laughs which earns him a smack from Sarah. "How old is he" Bucky asks quietly, still not looking away from you, "He's one and half" this time you speak directly to Bucky turning more and meeting his eyes, it's then you realise the soft smile he wears across his face as he looks rather intently at you.
As you turn towards him, Bucky takes notice of your face, committing it to memory, he notes every line, freckle, the way your smile curves, the slight indentations in your cheeks as you do, the way your nose crinkles as you look at your son, how your eyes seem to brighten when you talk about him, then he notices a small scar on the side of your face above your eyebrow, how the jagged little line fades into the skin. He spots another faded scar like it on your hand as you continue to brush back the babes hair away from his face. Forrest points up to the sky and excitedly squeaks "bird" as one flies overhead. Bucky again couldn't help but make another mental note, this time of the way the baby who very much resembled his mother, and how his little face lit up at the sight.
"Oh well done Forrest, bird!" Sarah came forwards enthusiastically clapping her hands pointing to the sky. "Bird! Bird! brr brrr brrr-" Forrest continued to babble away to himself, pointing to the sky at the birds. "Bird was his first word, that's pretty much all he says besides mama and bye, he loves birds" you laugh bouncing him on your hip. "Oh Sam he'd love you in your bird costume!" Sarah jokes, Sam however who's eyes seem to pop out of their sockets at the comment does not find it funny, while Bucky laughs. "Costume! it's a suit, a suit that saves the world I'll have you know! bird costume.." he tuts kissing his teeth.
"Well I think your bird costume is cool uncle Sam" AJ pipes in. "Me too" Cass adds though is overlapped by a heavily frustrated Sam "-it's not a bird costume!! you know what, next time any of you guys need saving I'm leaving y'all to fend for yourselves. pfft bird costu-" his rant was cut short by Sarah "Well that's not true and you know it, you love me big brother, kids get in on this" Sam is soon bundled to the floor by Sarah and the kids piling on top of him all of them laughing harmoniously.
"Okay as much as I want to stay I have to get this little angel down for his nap, so I'll head back to mine, thanks for letting us play guys" You shout at the group hearing a faint 'okay love you' from Sarah under all the laughing. You turn to Bucky and smile, "It was nice to meet you Bucky, maybe see you again sometime" this time you extend your hand to him which he took in a heartbeat. Smoothing his thumb over the soft skin as he stands a little taller nodding. "Yeah it was great meeting you guys, bye Forrest" he turns his attention towards the tired toddler in your arms who sleepily lifts his hand giving Bucky a small wave goodbye, making the old mans heart skip a few beats. "Bye Bucky" you gently let your hand slip from his holding eye contact with him for just a few more seconds before daring to tare yourself away.
As you carry yourself down the driveway, one thing you were certain of. Bucky had made your heart melt in just a few small moments.
Tumblr media
Bucky and Sam had been staying with Sarah for two nights now. The pair of them loving the 'uncle duties' as Sam liked to call it, playing with the kids while Sarah worked, showing them how to fly Redwing and dangling off Uncle Bucky trying to take him to the ground. Buck wouldn't admit it, but he secretly loved how the kids had taken to him so quickly. the thought of being a part of a family especially one with kids seemed so far out of reach, so he appreciated Sam for letting him join his. However, he did feel a tinge of disappointment over the fact that you had not been over to visit since the first day they had arrived. Sure, he had caught a glance of you cooking in your own kitchen window when they were on their way out yesterday afternoon, and sure you heard a commotion through your open window looking up in an instant hoping to catch a glimpse of a certain blue eyed beauty, eyes meeting for only a second before you had to tear them away to check your toddler wasn’t playing with knives or anything. Bucky again felt the small pang of rejection in his chest as you looked away just as quickly as you looked at him.
Over dinner that evening Bucky was surprised it was Sam that brought you up as a topic of conversation clearly reading the signals that he had wanted to know more about you without seeming nosy. “So, your friend Y/n” Sam suggested the topic after swallowing a mouthful of beer, finding the confidence, Bucky instantly perked up, waiting to see what Sarah would say. She only tilted her head to the side cocking an eyebrow. “What about her Sam” there was a brief pause, Sam looked between Sarah and Bucky, “You know, what’s her deal” he took another swig of his drink feeling slightly under pressure. The man could fight evil and not break a sweat but ask his sister a challenging question and the boy would crack. “Her deal is none of your business Sam” Sarah stated matter of factly. “Oh, common Sarah, we’re just curious” Sarah huffs and sits back in her seat looking between the two men. Bucky gives her a subtle nod letting her know it’s okay.
“If either of you say anything to her, I will beat you both senseless, got it!” she points across the table at both the men sitting next to each other. Bucky and Sam raise their hands in unison, the sight quite comical for Sarah.
“I told you she got out of a bad relationship, but I didn’t say how bad. She moved from Wyoming to get away from him, she was with him for years, he’d keep her locked in the house, put her in the hospital god knows how many times, but she was too terrified to press charges against him. Then she got pregnant and it got worse, she told me he said he was gonna kill her and the baby and she finally left while he was at work one day, got in the car and drove for a day straight until she got here, she didn’t know anyone, she was living out of her car, I let her stay at mine when I met her and found out what happened and got her in contact with her family again and they helped her buy her house and open her store, she used to have a café back in Wyoming before she met Matt, but he made her sell it, asshole. But anyway she has a restraining order against him but he keeps showing up here, we don’t know how he found out she lives down here, but he keeps coming and waiting for her outside her shop across the street and just stares at her, we don’t know if he lives in town now or if he just travels here to shake her down then goes back, but the guy is nuts.” Sarah’s chest felt heavy as she released the intel on her best friend, she couldn’t read the faces of her brother and Bucky, something distinguishable between disgust and regret of asking on Sams face but Bucky she could practically hear the gears turning in his Vibranium arm as he clenched his fist, nostrils flared and jaw tight, the man looked ready to fight.
“Have you guys not called the police about harassment” Bucky all but snarled. “Yeah, but they said they can’t do anything as he has never breached his restraining order, he’s not allowed within one hundred feet of her or Forrest and no contact is to be made, and so far he’s not done that, he’s never even met Forrest, I don’t think he’s ever seen him, he just sits on a wall in town opposite her shop, and the police say that’s not harmful and no means for arrest, or some shit like that I don’t know.” Sarah shook her head again at the thought.
“That’s bullshit” Bucky’s hand hit into the table with force causing the drinks to knock over and spill. Sarah let out a little yelp at the sudden boom of his voice. “Ah sorry” already picking up the classes and reaching for napkins and cleaning the mess. “Maybe we could hire her a bodyguard? What about Torres, I bet he’d love it!” Sam piped up again nodding to Bucky with a grin on his face. “She doesn’t need a baby sitter, what she needs is the police to do their job and arrest the creep who threatened her and her sons life multiple times but is still somehow walking around scott free” Sarah’s words seem to hit a nerve with Bucky, as he rises from the table storming towards the exit.
The thought of you in danger kept Bucky awake all night, not that he ever got much sleep anyway, but you and Forrest were keeping him up more than usual and he found it near maddening. Deciding to take things into his own hands the next day, he asked Sarah if you would be home, after finding out you would be in your Bakery he was very excited to pay you a visit, though that excitement soon turned to dread at the sight of a man having you pressed against the wall with his hands around your neck, while screaming in your face through the window of your shop. Matt had picked the wrong day to break his restraining order, and Bucky sure was happy of his saviour complex.

Billy almost flinched at the hand on his shoulder, he wanted to scream at Hopper to get his fucking hand off him. He just shrugged it off instead, rolling his shoulders back. He couldn’t help the chuckle that left his mouth, startling everyone. “Cap-” “What do you people want? A thank you? You all should have left me in that damn fucking ice.” He snapped, blue eyes turning cold as he stepped forward. Guns immediately were lifted up as if to aim and shoot. Yes, shoot me… kill me. You should have never brought me back. The ice was my prison, my grave. Don’t you all know better than to disturb the dead? The 2003 Script, Act 2b
Act 1 | Act 2a
We're breaking down The 2003 Script act by act!
In Act 2a, Ben stole the Declaration with less tension and more shenanigans, the henchmen are being picked off one by one, and Abigail is significantly less on board with this whole treasure hunt plan than in the final film. The news is reporting on an FBI manhunt for Ben & Riley, and on to Philadelphia we must go!
Tumblr media
The FBI come to Patrick’s house and:
SADUSKY Your son's in a lot of trouble, Mr. Gates. He's stolen a National Treasure.
→ I don’t have any affection for Cinema Sins but…Role credits!
Also, Patrick repeats Ben’s line about needing to do something wrong in order to do something right, which is a sweet callback and suggests they both got the line from the same place. Ben’s grandfather? One of the Founding Fathers?
Philadelphia
The setup of this sequence is similar to the movie, with the following exceptions:
This whole sequence is framed by a reenactment battle taking place outside of Independence Hall.
Ben and Abigail have already changed clothes, and are waiting here while Riley gets the next clue. (They bond by pointing out inaccuracies in the reenactment.)
The schoolboy is one of several people Riley employs to decode the cypher. The next person he sends is a prostitute.
The FBI, not Ian, stop and question the prostitute when Riley solves the last piece of the clue and disappears.
Said clue is still “Pass and Stow” but the full riddle is:
“The trove unfolds for he who tolls Pass and…”
↳ lame.
Ben and Abigail aren’t wow’d by Riley figuring out that the clue leads to the Liberty Bell, but he makes no further attempt to impress them (i.e. the daylight saving time bit, which is one of my favorite parts of the movie.)
Both the FBI and Ian are on Ben’s tail throughout this sequence.
→ In the previous parts we talked about differentiation, and this is another place where that occurs between this script and the film. Rather than having both Ian and the FBI going at Ben and the gang, as written here, we get to deal exclusively with Ian until he gets the Declaration, then the FBI steps in to become Ben’s next problem. It might seem like having two antagonists would be better than one, but this is a case of less is more. By focusing on one antagonist, then the other, we get to explore the unique problems each pose for our heroes. (Like, the FBI isn’t going to kill Ben, and Ian can’t arrest him.) In this version, they blur together and neither one gets to shine. In fact, they start to feel like they’re almost working together to thwart Ben.
Abigail pulls Ben in for a Captain America: The Winter Solder-style fake-out kiss when they spot Ian and Shaw in the crowd. It means nothing, she swears.
Tumblr media
Up in the bell tower, the clue isn’t a shadow, it’s a plaque commemorating the person who rang the bell when the Declaration was signed.
Abigail both knows about this guy and his plaque off the top of her head, which Ben doesn’t, and knows that the Liberty Bell rang E Flat. Damn girl.
→ I do like that this version gives Abigail and her historical knowledge more time to shine. However, as we will soon see, that comes with a price.
Ben pries the plaque up with the bayonet of a musket (that I think he took from the reenactors, but this part is unclear to me. Did you have better luck understanding it?)
The glasses are under the plaque. Riley is very unimpressed with this as a clue.
The Declaration was hidden in the musket barrel.
↳ clever, I'll grant them.
They unroll it, and Ben, then Abigail look at it through the glasses.
It shows a 3D rendering of a church and cemetery, with an X-marks-the-spot among the graves.
Riley has been griping that there is no X-marks-the-spot on any of the clues for the entire treasure hunt. He’s very excited that there is one here.
→ Overall, this script is much more genre-aware than the finished film. Once again, I think the film made the right choice. The script seems to be trying to lampshade all the places where someone could conceivably go “Hey, I’ve seen that in another treasure hunt.” It seems like it’s trying to defend itself against being derivative, but it’s those very mentions that feel most derivative of other stories. The final film just enjoys—and let’s us enjoy—the fact that it is a new entry in the Action-Adventure Treasure Hunt sub-genre without comparing itself (and thereby asking us to compare it) with previous movies.
Ian and crew catch them in the bell tower.
Ben and Abigail climb onto the belfry while Riley tap dances around gunfire as Powell shoots through the trapdoor.
Tumblr media
Outside, Ben and Abigail are looking at a 20 foot drop onto the roof. Ben holds the Declaration while she jumps, then throws it down to her and jumps after.
Powell bursts through the trapdoor and starts shooting at them on the roof.
Riley “KIPS DOWN from outside the Belfry’s archway and…KICKS POWELL in the FACE!”
Tumblr media
→ Because that’s a thing your tech nerd can usually do. Pretty cool though.
Outside, the Declaration falls, Ben and Abigail dive to save it, and they wind up with Abigail hanging off the building by the gutter, with Ben stopped on the edge of the roof. It’s a three-story drop to the ground, and Powell is coming. (He kicked Riley back through the trapdoor).
Tumblr media
→ It is this moment, dear readers, that drove me to search my cupboards for alcohol during my first read of this script a few years ago. It was this moment that had me hysterical with gratitude that this is not the final version of National Treasure, and flabbergasted and appalled that this could have been National Treasure.
Ben, he um…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
…he shoves the Declaration of Independence down Abigail’s bra, then stomps on the gutter so it starts to tear away from the building, leaving her to ride the thing down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For what it’s worth, she is “aghast.”
There’s a whole lot more action now.
Ben tackles Powell to keep him from using the access stairs to get to Abigail, but
Ian and Shaw grab Abigail and throw her into a Corvette.
Ben, and Riley, now back from the belfry, run along the roof in the direction of the car.
There’s a huge gap between Independence Hall and its adjoining building, Congress Hall.
Ben jumps and makes it.
Powell jumps, misses, and fucking dies.
→ Again, we are picking off the henchmen like flies in this version
Riley watches Powell fall, looks away, and decides to take the stairs.
→ This is funnier if you don’t kill a guy to make the joke maybe?
Anyway, Ben jumps onto a tree, which lands him on a moving truck.
→ Why yes, we are doing another car chase.
In the Corvette, Abigail’s in the passenger seat, and Shaw’s behind her with a gun to her head. She tries to stop Ian from taking the document out from between her tits but she can’t.
→ Btw, the script is going with “bosom” to describe this all. As in
…And SHOVES it down into Abigail's bosom. She's aghast.
Not as aghast as I am though.
Ben jumps onto the roof of the Corvette and dodges some bullets, until Sadusky sees the situation and runs after them.
Sadusky has a shot at Ben and can’t bring himself to take it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His finger tightens on the trigger…but…he…just…can't…do…it.
→ That’s interesting! It's a shade of the mutual respect Ben and Sadusky also develop in the final film, but much more dramatic. Clearly Sadusky sees something in Ben. Himself? A Purpose™? Stories he also grew up with?
Ian crashes into the reenactors. Ben reaches through the window and grabs the Declaration. Ian tries to stop him but Abigail bites him.
Tumblr media
HOWEVER, Ian turns the wheel, Ben and the Declaration go flying. The reenactment horses stomp all over the thing, which is just in a plastic sleeve by the way, not a hard case.
Ben dives into the stampede but something something, Ian drives up and swipes the document.
Abigail ELBOWS HIM IN THE FACE, and Ben pulls her to safety right before Ian can find the last letter of “bitch.”
IAN You little bitc—
Then, Ben jumps on one of the reenactor’s horses, ready to chase after Ian and the Declaration...
Tumblr media
...until Sadusky stops him at gunpoint.
Tumblr media
Both Abigail and Ben are taken into custody.
→ Framing this sequence with the reenactment battle is a cool idea actually! It lets Ben literally live out the yankees vs redcoats battle for American independence. Is it a bit on the nose? Sure. But Ben stealing a (fake) British Officer's horse to chase down the Declaration is pretty badass so 'rule of cool' might win here. That said I don't this I miss this in the final film. I love how much more intimate they made this entire sequence.
FBI Interrogation
Sadusky questions Ben, and the call from Ian comes in off screen. For ever hour they don’t comply, Ian will cut off a piece of the Declaration and send it to them.
Agent Johnson believes Ben and Ian have been in on it together the whole time.
Ian calls again and we only hear Ben’s side of the phone call as Ian directs him to the Intrepid.
The Intrepid
Cue our requisite sexy shirtless scene of Ben getting wired by the FBI. (Remember, Ben’s in his 20s in this version)
The chopper is still a decoy, but it’s because they already think Ian is coming in it. Much less dramatic than the final version of the scene.
Instead of saying he found Door Number 3, before he jumps Ben tells Sadusky that Abigail had nothing to do with this.
→ This is unfortunately true. Abigail has more sass but less agency overall in this version, I would say.
A diver pops out of the water…and it’s RILEY.
Riley then does a BRITISH ACCENT because HE’S THE ONE who was calling the FBI while IMPERSONATING IAN.
→ I get that this is fun, but I really like that Ben and Ian are forced to work together, and I like that Abigail is the one making the plans to set up the escape.
Back at the FBI, Sadusky let’s Abigail out of her cell because he believes Ben that she wan’t involved.
→ ?? I mean that feels a little too easy but whatever.
And thus we move into ACT 3!
With any luck there will not be a six month wait between parts this time.
