On March 1, 1984, a short article titled "Imprisoned Armenian Dies" appeared in the New York Times: “Gourgen Migirdic Yanikian, an Armenian author and engineer who killed two Turkish consular officials in California in 1973, died Monday in prison of natural causes. He was 88 years old. He was sentenced to life in prison in July 1973 for first-degree murder."
But who was this man? And why did he commit this "crime"?
Tumblr media
Gourgen Yanikyan was born on December 24, 1895, in the city of Karin, Western Armenia, into a traditional Armenian family. Gourgen was six months old when the hamidian massacres began, claiming the lives of approximately 300,000 Armenians. His father had good relations with the Persian consul in Karin, and with the consul's help, the Yanikyan family found refuge in the Persian consulate, escaping the massacres. After two weeks of safety, they were transferred by a mountain road to the village of Kyotah near Kars on the consul’s orders. Suddenly, it was discovered that Gourgen was missing. He had fallen on the road from his mother’s arms that were numbed from the cold. Despite the danger, his mother and brother Hakob went back and, after walking about six kilometers, found Gourgen nearly lifeless. They revived him with the warmth of their bodies.
Six years later, the mother returned to Erzurum with Gourgen and Hakob, intending to take back the money and documents hidden in their barn back. While digging, two turks arrived, captured Hakob, beheaded him, and took the iron chest. The mother and Gourgen witnessed everything from their hiding place. A terrified Gourgen tried to scream, but his mother held his mouth shut. Gourgen never forgot this tragedy throughout his life. For political reasons, he became a Persian citizen and later moved to Switzerland with his family, where he continued his education, which he later pursued in Tbilisi and Moscow.
Like many Armenians of his time, he experienced the devastating effects of the massacres committed by the turks against Armenians. He lost 26 family members to the Armenian Genocide of 1915, as well as his homeland—Western Armenia.
Although Gourgen was far from his homeland, the injustice of the genocide never left him. He had exhausted all peaceful means to inform the world about the genocide and hold turkey accountable for the atrocities they committed.
He chose cinema as the means to achieve his goal: “Our plan was very simple. With our personal funds, we secretly planned to make a film showing the world the sufferings of our people and the barbaric turkish massacres, not forgetting the Armenian genocide and the conspiracy of so-called civilized nations against our rights."
Tumblr media
Yanikian's factual book "Paradise" (originally in English), which his wife Shushanik had titled, became the basis for a screenplay. Several foreigners joined the film project, and they shot 20 hours of material depicting turkish atrocities with striking authenticity.
"The film was to be shown simultaneously in the capitals of three different countries, free of charge. Flyers explaining the purpose and our demands were to be distributed with the tickets… The goal was to return the land stolen from the Armenian people to its rightful owners and provide compensation for our two million victims. Many individuals were to join the cause once the film was ready."
Despite the strong dedication to completing "Paradise," the endeavor was unsuccessful because U.S.-Turkey alliances and strategic interests were prioritized, and the US government hindered the production of the film.
Yanikyan, by then old but not despairing, had spent decades using every peaceful means to punish the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide and avenge his compatriots, but he ultimately felt compelled to choose an alternative.
"In all my writings, I always defended the belief that violence should disappear from our lives. But when all of this happened and humanity and the world remained silent about the Armenian Question, I made the decision to take action in order to bring the Armenian cause to the attention of humanity and world governments."
Tumblr media
On January 27, 1973, at the age of 78, Gourgen Yanikyan, without hesitation, fired 13 bullets at the turkish consul and vice-consul in Santa Barbara in his room at the "Baltimore" hotel. Following a highly publicized trial, Yanikyan was sentenced to life imprisonment, and in 1984, with a clear conscience, he passed away into eternity.
But his sacrifice was not in vain: the Armenian Question was finally brought back from the dusty archives of history. By sacrificing his freedom, Yanikyan ignited a movement. His act became the catalyst for a wave of Armenian activism, inspiring the creation of ASALA, who would go on to fight for the recognition of the genocide.
Everyone condemns violence but, alas, it is the only language the world understands.

Coming to America! (In truth, it's already here).
After the gruesome killing, video footage was posted online of Sajjad Heidarnava walking the streets of Ahvaz while smiling and carrying his wife’s severed head.
An Iranian man has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for decapitating his wife and displaying her head in public.
Mona Heidari, 17, was killed last year in February by her husband, Sajjad Heidarnava, and his brother Heydar in Ahvaz, the capital of the southwestern Khuzestan province.
After the gruesome murder, video footage was posted online of the murderer walking in the provincial capital, Ahvaz, while smiling and carrying his dead wife’s head.
Heidarnava was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for murder and eight months for intentional assault, judiciary spokesman Massud Setayeshi told the media on January 18.
Heidari's family had forgiven the murderer and declined to demand qesas -- Iran's Islamic law of retribution.
"The accused has no right to protest against the verdict and the decision is final," the spokesman said.
Heidarnava's brother, Heidar, was sentenced to 45 months in prison for complicity in intentional hom1cide, Setayeshi said.
Heidari was married at the age of 12 and was the mother of a 3-year-old boy when she was murdered, according to Iranian media reports.
She had fled to Turkey several months before being persuaded to return to Iran by her father, according to the girl’s mother-in-law.
Human rights activists called for changes to the law to protect of women against domestic violence after Heidari's murder and to increase the minimum age of marriage for girls, which is currently 13.
In another notorious case, an Iranian man was sentenced to nine years in prison for beheading his 14-year-old daughter with an axe in a so-called “honor” k1lling that prompted widespread outrage in the country in August 2020.
In Iran, “honor” killings are only punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Otherwise, murder is punishable by a life sentence or the death penalty.
Many in Iran have blamed the Islamic legal system as well as the country's patriarchal culture and traditions for fostering an environment that allows for "honor" k1llings.
Iran is currently enveloped in a wave of unrest over the death of a young woman while in police custody for allegedly wearing a head scarf improperly.
Tumblr media
Women and girls have spearheaded the anti-government demonstrations demanding more rights and freedoms.

I would listen to a audio drama about "your boy jonah" but also, tell me about your boy! Here is a free space to ramble. Please info-dump.
Free space to ramble?! Don't mind if I do!
So, in case anyone is unfamiliar with the story of Jonah, it begins with Jonah minding his business and suddenly being called upon by God to go to Ninevah [the capital city of the Assyrian empire] to call them out for their sins. Instead, Jonah seals his place in my heart by running away from God.
I just find it so immediately endearing that his reaction to being given a divinely ordained job to do is to absolutely nope the fuck out and run for the hills. It's not just hilarious, but it also feels so honest? Like yeah sometimes we know rightly what we're supposed to do, either because of the leading of the spirit or because of our own morals, and sometimes it's fucking terrifying!!
So he runs away, he gets on a boat to sail off to Far Off Lands (poss. southern Turkey) and obviously... God knows. Because it's God. You can't just duck behind a tree and suddenly God forgets you're there lol And God is big mad and sends a storm that threatens to break the ship into matchsticks. The sailors are terrified - I imagine them as these hardened sea-faring men who are used to all sorts of things, and this storm is so fierce they're absolutely terrified.
And Jonah... is fast asleep. Conked the fuck out on one of the lower decks, like he isn't moments from being smithereened. Running away from God is a tiring business, I guess! Also, as a chronic procastinapper, I can't help feeling like he just felt like he had too much on his plate and decided napping is way less scary that That Whole Mess.
So the captain drags him up and demands that he pray to his god because clearly the gods of the sailors are not paying attention lol But they also want to know where the storm came from and why, so they draw lots to see who's to blame? And of course Jonah draws the short straw.
And then this bit I imagine Jonah being super sheepish about OK. Because in this era and place, it was quite normal to accept that other people's gods were real and powerful, but they just weren't your gods. But different gods have different areas of power, so the sailors ask Jonah who his god is. And very grudgingly, Jonah admits that ummm yeah ok so actually his god is... the one who created the sea and the land.
And I imagine there's this moment of absolute silence as these sailors take in the fact that this guy has pissed his god off and who's his god again? Oh yeah, only the one who MADE THE OCEAN which is currently trying to KILL THEM.
"So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea."
But Jonah doesn't drown! God sends a fish to swallow him up, and he sits in the fish for three days and prays while he's in there, because actually all things considered it was pretty neat of God to send a fish to swallow him instead of letting him drown and he's like "I think maybe I have got close enough to death and I would like to stop having an adventure now and go back to being all the way alive."
Which is very cool having his time in the fish being this sort of pseudo-death? Like he was getting a little taste of it. And he even talks about it as being in Sheol, and being out of sight of God and longing to be alive and back where God can see him.
So God tells the fish to vomit him up and tells Jonah again to go to Ninevah, which this time he does! It's a huge city, it takes three days to walk across it, but Jonah made a promise and he sticks to it. He walks and talks and the city repents and God relents from whatever punishment he was going to send.
Which, in a turn that never fails to touch my heart, makes Jonah... absolutely fucking livid. He is so mad about this decision. He's like, "I fucking knew it!! I knew you weren't going to smite these fuckers!" and God is like ??? excuuuuse me ???
And Jonah - I love him so much - he storms off, he stomps out of Ninevah and builds himself a little hu and he sits in his hut and he stares at the city, wishing hellfire and damnation on everyone in it, and sulking like nobody on earth. He is raging and I love it.
But it's the fucking Assyrian desert, it's hot as balls and even in his wee hut, Jonah's got the sun beating down on him. And God makes this plant grow next to him for shade, which Jonah is pretty pleased about - until the next morning, God sends a worm that attacks the plant and kills it. And also throws in some scorching winds and fiery sun for good measure.
And Jonah's lying there about to pass out and he's like, "I would literally rather be fucking dead" and then we get my favourite exchange in the whole Bible:
But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”
I just love it!! He's having none of it! He is furious and he is feeling more righteous and miserable than any angsty teenager ever could and he's telling God straight out, "You have pissed me off like nobody has ever pissed anyone off before" and I love him so much!!
And God points out that he's that angry about the plant dying, which he didn't even grow or tend to, but somehow it's not fair for God to not be particularly keen on destroying an entire megatropolis full of people and animals who by the way God is responsible for and cares for? Double standards much? And the book ends! It's made its point and off it fucks.
Also there's a bit at the end there where it describes the thousands and thousands of people in Ninevah as "not knowing which is their left hand and which is their right" which I assume is a metaphor for not knowing right from wrong but which I also just love as such a read. Like, "Really? You expect me not to look after these people? Look at them. They're morons, Jonah. They're the kind of morons who would think, oh, I don't know, that they could hide from God in a boat."
I just love how angry Jonah is, and how afraid, and how human! And I love that he has this sassy back and forth with God and that he gets angry at God and argues and has to get put in a fish for a time out. It feels like such a close, bickering sort of relationship and I think the world would be a better place if more people felt like they could look God in the eye and say, "YES! I AM ANGRY!! I AM SO ANGRY I COULD DIE!!!"

And it is so.

Iranian film director Mohammad Rasoulof said Monday he had left Iran after being sentenced to jail on national security charges, a day ahead of the opening of the Cannes Film Festival where his new film is in the main competition.
"I am grateful to my friends, acquaintances, and people who kindly, selflessly, and sometimes by risking their lives, helped me get out of the border and reach a safe place on the difficult and long path of this journey," Rasoulof, whose film "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" is to premiere at Cannes, wrote on his official Instagram page.
Rasoulof was sentenced by an Iranian court to eight years in jail, of which five were due to be served, on charges of "collusion against national security", his lawyer Babak Paknia said last week.
"I can confirm that Mohammad Rasoulof has left Iran and will attend the Cannes festival," Paknia told AFP on Monday.
Rasoulof, 51, was not believed to have been in jail. It is common in Iran for defendants to be outside prison when sentences are handed out and later called to jail to serve their terms.
'Dangerous journey'
A statement from his French distributors was more circumspect on his attendance in Cannes, saying Rasoulof was "currently staying in an undisclosed location in Europe, raising the possibility that he might be present at the world premiere of his most recent film."
"We are very happy and much relieved that Mohammad has safely arrived in Europe after a dangerous journey. We hope he will be able to attend the Cannes premiere," Jean-Christophe Simon, CEO of Films Boutique and Parallel45, added in the statement.
It was not clear how Rasoulof had left Iran. Dissidents who feel in danger from authorities in the Islamic republic have been known to seek to cross to Europe via the mountainous land border with Turkey.
Rasoulof, who won the Golden Bear, the Berlin Film Festival's top prize, in 2020 with his anti-capital punishment film "There Is No Evil", had himself been detained in July 2022.
He was released in late 2023 after anti-government protests that began in September 2022 subsided.
Paknia had said earlier this month that some crew members had been "interrogated" this week and last week while actors on the film had also been questioned and barred from leaving the country.
The subject matter of the film and its cast remain under wraps, according to film industry media. It was not immediately clear how many people working on it were interrogated.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/erdogan-battles-key-rival-turkeys-local-elections-2024-03-31/
ISTANBUL, March 31 (Reuters) - Turks dealt President Tayyip Erdogan and his party their biggest electoral blow on Sunday in a nationwide local vote that reasserted the opposition as a political force and reinforced Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as the president's chief rival.
With most of the votes counted, Imamoglu led by 10 percentage points in the mayoral race in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, while his Republican People's Party (CHP) retained Ankara and gained 15 other mayoral seats in cities nationwide.
It marked the worst defeat for Erdogan and his AK Party (AKP) in their more than two decades in power, and could signal a change in the country's divided political landscape. Erdogan called it a "turning point" in a post-midnight address.
He and the AKP fared worse than opinion polls predicted due to soaring inflation, dissatisfied Islamist voters and, in Istanbul, Imamoglu's appeal beyond the CHP's secular base, analysts said.
"Those who do not understand the nation's message will eventually lose," Imamoglu, 53, told thousands of jubilant supporters late on Sunday, some of them chanting for Erdogan to resign.
"Tonight, 16 million Istanbul citizens sent a message to both our rivals and the president," said the former businessman, who entered politics in 2008 and is now widely touted as a likely presidential challenger.
Erdogan, who in the 1990s was also mayor of his hometown Istanbul, had campaigned hard ahead of the municipal elections, which analysts described as a gauge of both his support and the opposition's durability.
Addressing crowds gathered at AKP headquarters in Ankara, the capital, Erdogan said his alliance had "lost altitude" across the nation and will take steps to address the message from voters.
"If we made a mistake, we will fix it" in the years ahead, he said. "If we have anything missing, we will complete it."
Elsewhere in Ankara, thousands more supporters had earlier waved Turkish and party flags for a speech by reelected CHP Mayor Mansur Yavas, who trounced his AKP challenger in another disappointment for Erdogan.
According to 92.92% of ballot boxes opened in Istanbul, Europe's largest city and the country's economic engine, Imamoglu had 50.92% support compared with 40.05% for AKP challenger Murat Kurum, a former minister in Erdogan's national government.
Polls had predicted a tight contest in Istanbul and possible CHP losses across the country.
Yet partial official results reported by state-run Anadolu Agency showed AKP and its main ally giving up mayoralties in 19 key municipalities including big cities Bursa and Balikesir in the industrialised northwest, possibly reflecting strains on wage earners.
The CHP led nationwide by almost 1% of the votes, a first in 35 years, the results showed.
Mert Arslanalp, assistant professor of political science at Istanbul's Bogazici University, said it was Erdogan's "severest election defeat" since coming to national power in 2002.
"Imamoglu demonstrated he could reach across the deep socio-political divisions that define Turkey's opposition electorate even without their institutional support," he said. "This makes him the most politically competitive rival to Erdogan's regime."
IMAMOGLU'S RISE
In 2019, Imamoglu had dealt Erdogan a sharp electoral blow when he first won Istanbul, ending 25 years of rule in the city by AKP and its Islamist predecessors, including Erdogan's own run as its mayor in the 1990s. CHP also won Ankara that year.
The president struck back in 2023 by securing reelection and a parliamentary majority with his nationalist allies, despite a years-long cost-of-living crisis.
Analysts said the economic strains, including nearly 70% inflation and a slowdown in growth brought on by an aggressive monetary-tightening regime, moved voters to punish AKP this time.
"The economy was the decisive factor," said Hakan Akbas, a senior adviser at the Albright Stonebridge Group. "Turkish people demanded change and Imamoglu is now the default nemesis to President Erdogan."
Erdogan said ending the second election cycle in less than a year will itself bring a reprive for the economy.
In front of the Istanbul Municipality building, flag-waving supporters said they wanted to see Imamoglu challenge Erdogan for the presidency in the future.
"We are very happy. I love him so much. We would like to see him as president," said Esra, a housewife.
Rising popular support for the Islamist New Welfare Party, which took an even more hardline stance than Erdogan against Israel over the Gaza conflict, also sapped AKP support. The party took Sanliurfa from an AKP incumbant in the southeast.
Imamoglu was reelected despite the collapse of the opposition alliance that failed to topple Erdogan last year.
The main pro-Kurdish party, which backed Imamoglu in 2019, fielded its own candidate under the DEM banner in Istanbul this time. But many Kurds put aside party loyalty and voted for him again, the results suggest.
In the mainly Kurdish southeast, DEM reaffirmed its strength, winning 10 provinces. Following previous elections, the state has replaced pro-Kurdish mayors with state-appointed "trustees" following previous elections over alleged militant ties.
Violence erupted earlier in the day, including one incident in the southeast in clashes by groups armed with guns, sticks and stones, killing one and wounding 11. In another, one neighbourhood official, or "muhtar", candidate was killed and four people were wounded in a fight, Anadolu reported.
Several others were hurt in other incidents while one person was shot dead and two were wounded overnight ahead of the vote in Bursa, the Demiroren news agency reported.

Tumblr media
By Jean-Pierre Isbouts
1 December 2022
After Jesus' death in A.D. 33, his early followers began slowly spreading out from Jerusalem to find sanctuary in places such as Cyrus, Phoenicia, Damascus, and Antioch.
The authors of the New Testament, like St. Luke the Evangelist who is believed to have penned the book Acts of the Apostles around A.D. 80, tell the struggles believers and the early church faced in their nascent days.
In Acts, Luke tells the story of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr to be gruesomely executed in A.D. 36.
Stephen's stoning, Luke says, prompted other followers to flee so as not to fall victim to similar persecutions.
So, what does the Bible say about how this vulnerable faith got jumpstarted, eventually evolving into the world’s most populous religion with some 2.3 billion followers today?
Mystical conversion
Tumblr media
Acts of the Apostles tells the story of one man, Saul of Tarsus, who played a huge role in spreading early Christianity.
Devoutly Jewish and a Roman citizen, he was an unlikely proponent of this new faith.
It describes how he witnessed the mob scene around Stephen’s death and came to believe it was his solemn duty to persecute Christians, going so far as to drag Christian men and women to prison, punishing them to deny their faith.
He obtained permission from the high priest in Jerusalem to pursue and arrest fleeing Christians.
On his way to Damascus, Syria, however, a light from heaven flashed around him.
He fell to the ground and heard the voice of the resurrected Jesus saying, “Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4).
From that moment on, Saul (later called Paul) devoted himself to the Apostolic mission.
Spreading the message
Tumblr media
Among the places where early Christians fled for safety from persecution was Antioch, capital of Roman Syria.
The newly converted Paul found himself there and, with the apostle Barnabas, spent a year preaching the gospel and establishing the first Christian church.
It was there that the term “Christians” — "followers of Christ” — was coined (Acts 11:21).
It was also from Antioch that Paul embarked on three separate journeys, detailed in Acts, traveling over 10,000 miles between A.D. 46 and 57.
It tells of Paul’s visits to present-day Israel, Syria, Greece, and Turkey, walking roads that Romans built to facilitate control over the empire and enduring uncomfortable passages on weather-exposed decks of boats.
Along the way, he argued “persuasively about the kingdom of God” (Acts 19:8) and performed “extraordinary miracles” (Acts 19:11), such as curing the sick.
In Cyprus, he baptized a Roman consul, Paulus Sergius.
He shared Jesus’ gospel and established churches throughout the Roman Empire, communities of faith that featured confessions, liturgies, bishops, priests, and deacons.
Resistance, arrest, and martyrdom
Tumblr media
Everywhere he went, however, Paul also encountered Jewish followers, who called him a heretic.
He endured beatings, stoning, and arrests for preaching the gospel.
In Athens, Acts recounts how Paul became distressed over the preponderance of idols.
He tried to reason with the citizens:
“As I walked around and looked at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: To an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship” (Acts 17:23).
He debated that this “unknown god” was the biblical God, the creator of heaven and earth.
Some sneered, but others said they wanted to hear more from Paul (Acts 17:32). Just by talking to people, he successfully made converts, one by one.
Acts records that Paul was arrested several times by the Romans and imprisoned twice in Rome.
The first time, between A.D. 60 and 62, he was arrested for causing a riot in a Jewish temple in Jerusalem.
He was allowed to live in a house, where it’s said he converted his Roman guards.
The Romans arrested him again sometime between A.D. 62 and 67.
This time, he was confined to Tullianum, a maximum security prison. Soon after, Paul is said to have been martyred.
His end is unclear, but the most common account claims he was beheaded at the order of the Roman emperor Nero, who blamed him as a Christian leader for Rome’s burning.
Paul’s unique ways
Tumblr media
Many other apostles and missionaries evangelized Christianity at the same time as Paul.
While biblical accounts show that Paul didn't claim to be anything more than an ambassador for Christ, he did have a unique strategy.
He worked to baptize souls regardless of whether they were Jewish or Gentile.
One big question centered on whether converts to Christ should also be expected to become Jewish.
For the Jerusalem apostles, the answer was yes. For them, faith was inseparable from Jesus’ teachings as a Jewish rabbi. Paul disagreed.
He welcomed Gentiles who were attracted to Christianity but were not interested in adopting Jewish customs.
Paul was intelligent and controversial, pouring his experiences and thoughts into letters throughout his travels.
Some say he wrote so many letters because so many people argued with him.
Whatever the case, the letters summarize his views on Christianity, ideas that became the bedrock of the Catholic Church.
Tumblr media
In his Letter to the Romans, for example, he said that faith in Christ supersedes Jewish Law; that each community is part of the “body of Christ” and should be governed by love; and that faith in the Christian God holds the promise of eternal life.
In all, he authored 13 epistles (seven of which are undisputedly his, six of which are disputed), making him the most prolific writer in the Bible.
Fourteen of the 27 books in the New Testament are attributed to him (though scholars also differ on this number).
Through it all, Paul articulated Jesus’ “kingdom of God” message into an idea that the largely Gentile population could understand and accept and his ability to spread the message of primitive Christianity is truly extraordinary.
His three journeys described in Acts permanently established the fledgling faith in Gentile lands and beyond.
Without him, the Greco-Roman world might never have heard about the teachings of a charismatic rabbi from Nazareth whose redemptive program went on to embrace the world.

The uprising was a mutiny, not a coup: Mr. Prigozhin’s stated goal was to oust the senior military leadership, not to take over the country himself, and on Monday he called it a “protest” over the order to make Wagner fighters sign contracts.
It also ended quickly. By late Saturday night, the Kremlin announced that Mr. Prigozhin would leave Russia for Belarus, and his troops would not face repercussions.
Now, the question is what the mutiny tells the elites who keep Mr. Putin in power, and whether it has changed their incentives.
“Mutinies can signal dissatisfaction within the ranks that future coup plotters can capitalize on,” Dr. de Bruin said. One large-scale study of military mutinies in Africa, for instance, found that they rarely escalate directly into coups, but they are associated with an increased likelihood of coups in the near future.
Sometimes the opposite is true: In the aftermath of a failed coup, leaders often take the opportunity to purge those whom they suspect of disloyalty, strengthening their hold on power. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, for instance, cracked down on tens of thousands after a failed coup attempt in 2016, purging the military as well as institutions like the police, schools and the courts.
But that may not be possible in this case, Dr. de Bruin said. Because Mr. Prigozhin withdrew, rather than being defeated by Russia’s army, “Putin doesn’t come out of this looking like he won the confrontation,” she said. The public saw that Wagner troops could race toward Moscow, and that they now seem to face little punishment.
Even if there was more going on behind the scenes, appearances matter. After making a brief statement on Saturday, Mr. Putin vanished from sight, making no further appearances during the dramatic uprising and its aftermath. Then his government announced a deal with Mr. Prigozhin, even though the president had publicly called Mr. Prigozhin’s actions “traitorous.”
Mr. Putin’s response, analysts said, may signal that disloyalty is not as costly as many might have imagined.
Mr. Prigozhin is an “exceptional phenomenon” and isolated among Russia’s elites, according to Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, but she wrote over the weekend that he still dealt Mr. Putin a blow. “I won’t discount the possibility of future imitators, but there will never be another one like him.”
None of that means that Mr. Putin’s days as president are numbered. But his hold on power looks less certain than ever before. Mr. Putin “is now marked as weak enough to challenge,” said Naunihal Singh, a professor at the Naval War College and the author of a book on the strategic logic of military coups. “I think there may be other challengers now.”

ISTANBUL—Since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has provided a lifeline of people and money for Turkey—and received plenty of benefits in return.
Over the past year, Russians have flooded into Turkey in droves. Many are buying up property, whereas others came to escape conscription into the army, bank their savings outside Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sanctioned economy, or open businesses; last year alone, Russians opened 1,363 new companies in Turkey. At immigration offices throughout Turkey’s biggest cities, it’s now mostly Russians applying for residence permits, and more than 155,000 of them have been granted, according to Turkish government data.
Turkey and its economy have mostly welcomed the newcomers and their cash. To an extent, they have—at least temporarily—changed the faces of Turkish cities, such as Istanbul or Antalya. Rent has shot up, but natural gas prices have remained low; coffee shops are crowded with Russian visitors; and even the occasional billboard is now in Cyrillic.
For Turkey, maintaining and even deepening relations with Russia while also maintaining its place as one of NATO’s biggest members is a tricky but much-needed balancing act. Turkey is squeezed between Iran and the West, has a land border with Syria, controls the Black Sea’s only access to the ocean, and has a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia. Since the war began, Turkey has managed to prop up both the Ukrainian military effort and Russia’s war-battered economy.
On its northern shores, Turkey has supplied Ukraine with drones—used to great effect against Russian forces—and helped negotiate a deal that allows Ukrainian grain to be shipped out of Black Sea ports. At the same time, Turkey has stepped up its purchases of Russian gas and oil and partially helped shield Moscow from punishing sanctions.
For Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, it’s a devil’s bargain born of his own geopolitical, political, and economic needs. Erdogan faces perhaps his most challenging election in May, and Russian support might just help carry him through.
“Russia and Turkey: That’s a marriage of convenience,” said Alper Coskun, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. It certainly isn’t an easy marriage.
In 2015, relations between the two nations soured when Turkey shot down a Russian jet that violated its airspace in southeastern Turkey on the Syrian border. In June 2016, Erdogan apologized and signaled readiness to restore ties. A month later, Russia offered help to Erdogan after a failed coup attempt in Turkey.
To Turkey, Russia offers an opportunity, but it also poses a threat. An aggressive Russia controlling Ukrainian coastal cities certainly isn’t in Turkey’s interest, but neither is the rise of a Kurdish statelet in northern Syria. Since 2014, the United States has supported Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, whereas Turkey claims the Kurdish militias have deep ties with the militant-political Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a designated terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. Russia has been on the other end in Syria, supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Turkey’s support to Ukraine is not a game-changer in the war though, said independent Moscow-based Russia expert Kerim Has. “Military aid is certainly there, and it shouldn’t be underestimated, but it’s not crossing Moscow’s red lines. Turkey is not sending tanks or fighter jets. It’s at a tolerable level for the Kremlin.”
Economically, especially since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has propped up Turkey’s economy with huge inflows of capital, even turning a blind eye to Ankara’s limited military support for Kyiv. The two countries are currently negotiating a potential gas discount, and Turkey has asked Russia to postpone gas payments until 2024, offering at least temporary economic relief.
It’s still a two-way street. For the isolated and sanctioned Kremlin, Turkey has become a financial safe haven. Last year, trade between the two countries amounted to an estimated $70 billion, with Turkey one of Russia’s biggest trading partners. At the same time, hundreds of Western companies are looking at circumventing sanctions by opening up offices in Turkey to continue trade with Russia, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News reported.
Ahead of Turkey’s May 14 elections, Putin’s moves to empower Erdogan are his best bet.
“Putin doesn’t really have any other choice, so it’s a pragmatic approach,” Has said. “While Erdogan isn’t always a reliable partner for Moscow, Putin doesn’t have a better alternative to work with in Turkey and beyond: All other alternatives are more pro-Western leaders.”
For Turkey, pragmatism rules too. Geographically and militarily, Turkey places itself with the Western block and has been a vital ally for the West, but economically, Turkey has no other option but to work with Russia. “If Russia cuts gas to Turkey, it would be a disaster,” Has said. “Likewise, if the Turkish economy collapses, European banks will also suffer with the number of loans Turkey has taken from them.”
Still, like all marriages—of convenience or otherwise—there is plenty of history and potential friction on the horizon. Erdogan recognizes Russia as a reality in the Black Sea region, especially with the United States largely absent economically and militarily. “Erdogan has adapted to this: the U.S.’s shifting focus away from the Black Sea region,” said Muhammet Kocak, an Ankara-based independent foreign affairs analyst.
Still, historic animosities and long-term rivalry could return to trump today’s immediate economic and political symbiosis, he said.
“Due to its partnership with Russia, Turkey has addressed its immediate, mostly Syria-related security issues but, at the same time, values its NATO membership and security alliance with the West,” Kocak added. “In the long run, Russia remains a historic competitor and threat to Turkey’s security. These dynamics likely outweigh the economic advantages.”

Israel Intensifies the War
On September 17, 2024, thousands of pagers/beepers owned by Hezbollah supporters in Lebanon exploded causing deaths and wounding thousands. Hezbollah vowed "fair punishment" against Israel which is suspected of causing them to explode. Some Jews claimed this killing was like what happened when God sent an angel to destroy the army of Assyria King Sennacherib in 2 Kings 19--was it? Or could it be consistent with a Roman Catholic warning that near the end of the world Israel would commit "a terrible crime'? On September 18, 2024, Hezbollah owned walkie-talkies exploded killing more people and wounding hundreds. Hezbollah then vowed "harsh punishment" against Israel. Some Syrians and Iranians were affected by these explosions. On September 20, 2024, Israel bombed a building in Beirut, killing various ones associated with Hezbollah. Could these attacks in the Summer of 2024 be the start of a broader regional war? Hezbollah reportedly has 130,000 rockets and missiles--will Israel's 'Iron Dome' system stop all destruction from them if they are launched. But does the prophet Isaiah warn that an Iranian-Syrian-South Lebanese confederation will cause great damage to Jerusalem in Isaiah 22:1-14? If we see a peace deal of Daniel 9:26-27 being confirmed sometime in 2024, could Jesus return in 2031? Dr. Thiel and Steve Dupuie address these topics.

IDK, Liz, that sounds a whole less outrageous when you take into account that the Russian Empire was never punished for what they did to the Circassians and the German Empire was never punished for what they did to the Herero and Nama people of what's now Namibia...
These days, the Circassian and Herero and Nama Genocides are still not widely well-known of and neither Russia nor Germany have ever even apologized for them.
The current German government just ignores what it did in Africa, while the current Russian government actively denies that it systematically murdered, ethnically cleansed, and expelled 95–97% of the Circassians (who, to this day, predominately live in Turkey, not their ancestral homeland of Circassia) and frames it as some kind of voluntary migration.
These days, Sochi (once the capital of Circassia) is the largest resort city in the Russian Federation. 70% of the population is Russian and Russians from elsewhere travel there regularly to frolic on Sochi's beaches and take in its botanical gardens. If that doesn't strike you as macabre and at least as exploitative as Americans' love of vacationing in Hawaii, then you lack any sense of perspective.
Point is, the nationalism and colonialism are a fucking blight on humanity and it matters very little at all who was doing the nationalism and colonialism.
If you're deluded enough to think there's a type of nationalism that does not have at least some genocidal maniacs who think they can do wrong amongst its adherents, you should look into having a proctologist remove your head from your ass.

The golden rule
Are naturally occurring hot oil springs real? I'm picturing this:
Tumblr media
I also like to think that the best way to regulate lakes you can deep-fry food in would be to make one rule punishable as a capital offense: you MUST eat every single thing you put in the lake! I can't imagine a better littering policy.
DALLE Prompt: Please show me a picture of a hot springs filled with clean, natural cooking oil rather than water. It should resemble a Yellowstone rainbow pool. A man on the shore dressed in a white collared shirt, khakis and a panama hat reels in a small deep-fried turkey leg with a fishing rod (and no other supplies), while sitting on a folding beach chair. The turkey leg itself is still in the hot oil, bubbling and simmering as it fries much like a fighting fish. Render in Fauvist style with many non-overlapping color planes. No other people or man-made objects are present. The tone strives for a bizarre serenity and evokes an awareness of near-realities we will never experience.
