Thank you for this blog. I find old posts of Zero being cool and suave and having Sexual thoughts and actions when he likely literally does not know sex exists other than knowing organic life reproduces physically somehow. With how the x games ended up you could argue he has never met a human irl before other than Dr Cain. If the ambiguous consent argument is too much he might get scared and kill you (x9: WTF NEW MAVERICK VIRUS INFECTS HUMANS?)
if zero even knows what an intimate relationship is, i'll sit and fuck myself.
DID YOU KNOW, as far as i was able to dig, there is nothing anywhere ever that stated iris and zero were a couple? a lot of fandom perception is that iris is zero's girlfriend and they were in wuv, and that half the tragedy of X4 is that he was going against someone he loved. he killed someone he loved. so tragic. :(
thing is, that's kind of complete bupkis.
obviously Iris admired him a lot, and it's not like Zero hated her, but that's about as far as it went! it's one of those popular fanon things that cycles around, like samus being super-motherly to the baby the baby the baby metroid and wubbing her widdle babuu, or flandre scarlet being sealed in the basement to contain her massive power because she's crazy and could kill everyone with the drop of a frilly hat. but then you start digging for where it's from in the games and ????????????? where did it come from? where did it go?
the manuals?
that would be a nope.
the game script? you can look at both the japanese and english script for x4 at your leisure, and even go for the x5 japanese cutscenes, japanese bosses, and english script to look for mentions of Iris as well. iris' dialogue in Xtreme 2 is 95% the same between x and zero, too, but just for posterity's sake here's also the english and japanese script. either way, that would also be a nope.
what about encyclopedic material, like the X Official Complete Works or the Compendium of Rockman X?
兄のカーネルを失ったアイリスが、自らの姿を変身させてゼロと戦う。クリスタル状の本体とサイボーグ体に分離しているレプリロイド。/ Iris has lost her brother Colonel, and so transforms herself to fight Zero. She is a Reploid split into both a crystal body and a cyborg(?) body. (Most of the Japanese is difficult to make out, so apologies if this is inaccurate! I could swear that says "サイボーグ" / "cyborg", but that doesn't make sense...)
that would also be a nope.
the closest we get to this is that Zero Went On A Date, which is tucked away in the side of a Capcom Music Generation booklet for X1-X6
(Pieced together with commentary from the X Complete Works)
which is all fine and dandy, i guess, but a date can be anything. is it a hang-out date? a shopping date? a romantic date? a social date? a business date? a casual date? a competitive tournament-level date? it's difficult to argue the intent is supposed to be anything other than lovey-dovey romantic but i had to dig into page 5 of mini-booklet in a goddamn compilation album to find it and this is the only evidence they did anything other than vaguely acknowledge each other in the field.
it seems people just kind of hooked them together. and i can get that. i've got weirder ships. there's a couple reasons you could say why. you could be a sarcastic shit and say it's because they're a male and a female in a 90s anime and so get hooked by a red string of fate as soon as they look at each other because people had no idea how interacting with people work. or you could write better than capcom and say iris being emotionally tied to both zero and colonel, instead of just being related to colonel and hoping zero-senpai notices her new breastplate, is what forces her to get involved as an in-between rather than just jumping ship to be with repliforce from the getgo. or you could just say they're cute, in which case, yeah, that's cool
but the point that i am laboriously reaching around to make is that this is a consistent pattern with zero throughout the series. zero/iris is the most prominent of a companion bob capcom has pushed for him and he barely acknowledges she exists. you have to really dig for any indication that they're together. zero/layer comes next, but if you look over their interactions, she's just making anime girl blushing noises and zero has no clue what the fuck she's doing. is she overheating? zero/ferham? he wants to stab her. zero/leviathan? he also wants to stab her. zero/ciel? maybe if his preferred way of responding to a 12-year-old girl wasn't with "............" and i see you xzero shippers in the background, rubbing your hands and cackling and thinking you're getting off scot-free. zero's second favorite way of socializing with x is bailing on him. first favorite is attempting to stab him as well.
the dude is spaghettiman virgin prime, a buzzsaw with only two modes: "KILL" and "maybe don't kill". an intimate relationship? he's got a computer brain and he still doesn't even know what that means. a relationship is what you have when you fight someone, right? he's as smooth as a cactus rolling through a sandpaper factory. he's as suave as a can of worms used in spear-fishing. if you showed him a picture of sex, he'd think it was two humans attempting to strangle each other. the man installed titties on himself and he's still never touched a single one. and then he lost them in the future, so he's operating at a net titty-touching loss, which is honestly quite an impressive feat.

First, id like to say that i. love. your. meta analysis. Seriously, i love your beautiful and genius brain.
And the point is, ive been thinking about your romance outline for re4r and goddamn even the marketing stands out in this topic to me.
I got a little fixated with every detail that came out about the game until launch and i can fucking list some things that got even me, who ship them since day one unbelieved.
Here it is: there is the pfp of the official account on tiktok with them, the absolutely cute ghibli mini anime for the game, Ashley being mentioned in Woman's Day, mentioned in a recent official survey as well and the fucking puns with their lines in game on Valentine's day, "i got the key to your heart", "to me, you are big time" like what is going on guys, im feel so fed.
What is your thoughts on this, queen?
It was obvious to me and @theggning all the way back in early March that they were suspiciously pushing Leon and Ashley's improved relationship.
When I saw that they put Leon princess-carrying Ashley in one of the fucking trailers, along with him gently touching her face and sitting down on the floor at her bedside, I paused and went "wait what the fuck are they doing here, actually"
None of this has been subtle at any point. We as Old Guard just were too afraid to see it for what it was/admit it was there because we've been abused and ridiculed by this fandom for so long that we convinced ourselves we were crazy and just seeing shit.
Yeah, we were seeing shit because Capcom was putting that shit there for us to see LMAO Once we all got the courage to take our blinders off and look at RE4make for what it was and actually say the words out loud, it was like a dam bursting. ALL of this shit is suddenly coming out as being very obvious and just simply overlooked by everyone.
Leon/Ashley is canon and intentional, and Capcom wants us to know it without saying it outright.
Also completely unrelated, I found this while looking for the above conversation, and we're hilarious and everyone needs to know:

Sky Garden
After an exhausting day at Universal Studios Japan, bleachpanda and I kept up the momentum by using our last day in Osaka to visit several popular sites in and around the biggest city in the Kansai region. This meant paying a visit to Namba Yasaka shrine bright and early in the morning. Well, technically, it was after 9 AM but after the early start yesterday and the considerable step count bleachpanda and I accrued the day before, I thought it best to give my faithful companion a bit more of a break.
Namba Yasaka shrine is a Shinto shrine that's about a ten minute walk from Namba station. It's known for its very distinctive lion head-shaped buildings and by the time bleachpanda and I arrived, there was already a throng of tourists taking photos of the fierce lion head.
Bleachpanda and I didn't stay long, though. After taking a few snaps of the shrine and skimming through the charms on offer, we headed back to Namba station and took the Midosuji line up to Umeda again. However, unlike the day before, we would not be transferring to Universal City station. Rather, we headed out to the Umeda Sky Building, a two-tower mixed-use skyscaper that had its own observation deck, the Kuchu Teien Observatory.
But my, what a unique design!
The building was originally conceived in 1988 as the "City of Air" project, and was envisioned to have four interconnected towers. However, due to the Japan economic bubble of the 1980s, the plan was scuppered and only two towers were constructed - linked, still, by a sky deck. This sky desk was built on the ground and lifted up through the use of hydraulic elevators.
While one does wonder what Umeda Sky Building would have looked like if it still had four towers, the building we got was still an impressive spectacle.
Once bleachpanda and I reached the top, we were afforded a wide view of Osaka given the excellent weather. It was such a grand view, even bleachpanda was able to appreciate it although she was hankering to start shopping.
After coming down from the skyscraper, bleachpanda and I headed back to Osaka Station and Lucia 100 to visit the Disney Store there. What surprised me, as the two of us were looking at the merchandise, was bleachpanda actually buying a cute mini plushie of Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore. This was despite telling me she hated Disney.
Well, hate is too strong a word. Bleachpanda just never saw the appeal of Disney, especially when it came to the princesses. And true, much of the marketing is focused on fairy tale stories about a princesses finding their one true love BUT there's been a lot of experimental works as well! Look no further than Atlantis: The Lost Empire or Emperor's New Groove! Or, in this case, Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.
I, on the other hand, couldn't resist the very cute tsum tsums and even got persuaded to buy an Easter-themed Stitch doll! And I don't even typically buy plushies on the regular! But this was Disney, and even though there weren't many things in relation to Star Wars or Marvel, I was in heaven!
Heaven, too, might be too strong a word. I was disappointed a little by the selection available but given the Disney 100 pop-up stores in Australia didn't have many options, the Disney stores here in Japan were far superior and catered a little more to my tastes.
Once I shelled out far too much for Disney merchandise (which was then put into a Duty-Free bag I couldn't open and which also had far too much air in it), I slowly led bleachpanda to the Pokemon Center nearby.
Little did I know there was also a Nintendo Store, Capcom Store and Mugiwara store all nearby. Suffice it to say, many things were purchased before we managed to break free and head to Animate - a 12 minute walk away with several bags full of shopping.
Unfortunately, once we arrived, there was naught for bleachpanda to buy, although I did pick up quite a few goodies for my own personal use. Then it was a short trek to a second Disney store, with a short stop at a Sanrio store nearby (where bleachpanda spent about 9000 Yen on things she thought were cute) before we had a look at the Jump and Marvel store also located within the same department store.
By the end of the day, the two of us were laden down by shopping bags. Despite all the shopping we'd done, bleachpanda still wanted to check out the local Don Quijote at Dotonbori again where she bought several snacks and skincare products. And though we had hoped to ride the ferris wheel to look out over the canal and the many other shops, it was closed due to the large crowds in the area.

Sega Saturn - Arcade Gears Volume 3 - Wonder 3 (Three Wonders)
Title: Arcade Gears Volume 3 - Wonder 3 / ワンダー3 アーケードギアーズ Vol. 3
Developer/Publisher: Capcom / MBA International / XING Entertainment
Release date: 5 March 1998
Catalogue No.: T-26107G
Genre: Compilation / Variety (Platformer + Shooting + Puzzle)
Arcade Gears were XING's attempt to cash in on the late 90's retro fad that was sweeping Japan. And to be fair to XING they brought us some far better games than the likes of Irem, Nihonbusan (Nichibutsu), and even Konami with their pitiful MSX Collection. Of course, XING didn't actually make any of the games on their Arcade Gears series since most came from Taito but in this case, we have some little gems from Capcom. Makes me wonder why Capcom didn't release these as part of their Capcom Generations series.
Wonder 3 (aka Three Wonders outside Japan) was actually an arcade game collection of 3 games released on one PCB board. The player could select which game from the 3 he/she wanted to play. OK, let's get down to the games on this collection. First up we have Roosters [Chariot wo Sagashite] (Midnight Wanderers: Quest for the Chariot / ルースターズ ~チャリオットを探して~) which is a sort of cheeky Indiana Jones rip-off platform action game starring two little cute characters played in what seems like the Ghouls N Ghosts engine. Second up is a shooter called Chariot [Tenkuu he no Tabi] (Chariot: Adventure through the Sky / チャリオット ~天空への旅~) which also stars the same characters that are used in Roosters. The third game is probably the weakest of the three. This time we have the puzzle game Donburu (Don't Pull / ドンプル).
All games on the collection are of high quality even though the puzzle one and the shooter come to think of it do look a little dated now. Roosters is definitely the winning game on this pack and without it, I'd actually give this collection a miss due to the simple fact that the Saturn has many great shooters and puzzle games already.
This version I have came with a free Gamest Gears mini magazine giving you the lowdown on all three games in great detail.

Sega Ninja (Arcade)
Developed/Published by: Sega Released: 2/2/1985 Completed: 10/07/2022 Completion: Finished it! Version Played: Astro City Mini Trophies / Achievements: n/a
Bloody hell. Sega Ninja, aka Ninja Princess, has to be the toughest thing I’ve played yet chronologically, just about beating Twinbee in that I couldn’t do it with a “true” fake 1CC, having to actually save during levels. Unlike Twinbee, where it’s largely difficult because of the dreaded Gradius effect + those bloody bells, here your princess only ever gets one upgrade per level meaning the entire thing is just sort of a brick wall of hard.
Anyway, I better explain what it is though, eh?
Sega Ninja is not the earliest run-and-gun (it’s definitively beaten there by Taito’s Front Line in 1982, and probably some other stuff) but it’s interesting because it came out about a month before what’s generally considered the canonical example, Capcom’s Commando. And, as we’ve seen multiple times so far, while Japanese game designers at the time were constantly stepping on each other’s toes as they started to establish genre, what stands out is how divergent their approaches end up being.
Commando, for example, has you shooting in the direction of movement with a limited number of grenades that can only be thrown vertically up the screen. Sega Ninja, instead, goes for something a bit more complex: you’ve got one button that shoots in the direction of movement, one button that shoots vertically always, and one button that makes you turn invisible and invincible(!) for a second or so… which can be used as much as you like!
It is, honestly, a bit much. I was hoping for something a bit more like what I remember the control scheme of the Chaos Engine being (note, this might be totally wrong)–one button to fire in the direction you’re moving but if you hold it you keep firing in that direction no matter how you move–but instead you end up mostly trying to move so that you’re able to use the vertical fire, and otherwise still suffering that problem you’ve got in Commando where you want to shoot someone behind you but in order to aim at them you have to move towards them and they, like… kill you before you can shoot. Of course, here you’ve got the invincibility, but it’s actually pretty easy to get killed going into or out of it, so that’s not a panacea either.
However, that’s not to say this is terrible or anything. It’s actually quite fun, and when you are able to lock into the control scheme, quite exciting. It’s fair in that “it’s fair once you know the level layouts” way, and there’s a surprising amount of variety in it compared even to run-and-guns from much later, with levels where you’re dodging boulders, climbing walls and even riding logs like you’re frogger. Unfortunately all the end-of-level bosses are basically the same (and are pretty cheap–you’ll have to beat most of them by attacking them as quickly as possible) but it at least does have an actual ending, brief as it may be, so it all felt quite worthwhile in the end–and I spent basically a week playing this off and on, it was that hard.
Oh, and I guess it’s kind of interesting that Sega Ninja came out so rapidly after Twinbee considering they’re both “cute-em-ups” and there really aren’t that many examples of the genre (I certainly don’t have any coming up for a while.)
Anyway, Sega Ninja… pretty good, if a bit awkward and dated. Fin.
Will I ever play it again? I’m probably good; there’s a SG-1000 version that I believe is not particularly good and a Master System version that turns it from a cute-em-up into something a bit more manly (while adding things you need to collect to actually beat the game) but it doesn’t seem especially essential.
Final Thought: Might as well take this opportunity to talk about the Astro City Mini a bit. I like it, it’s a charming bit of kit if you’re desperate to have more plastic in your house, but it is also sadly a bit flawed. There’s no dip-switch settings or anything on games and no auto-fire (a bit miserable on Sega Ninja, I’ll be honest) and the graphic filter is… pretty rubbish. It’s passable, but only barely. In fact it seems like it was probably tuned for the system’s screen, rather than TV use, which (unfortunately) I find a bit gimmicky, because you can’t really get a good viewing angle on the screen when using the wee stick and buttons, and it’s just too small, really.
That said though, it’s a great plug-and-play system if you’ve got the official controller, because it’s great! Saturn-pad adjacent but with a feel of its own that remains evocative of playing in the arcade (somehow). Overall it could be better but for a few firmware updates, which is a little frustrating, but I like it well enough.

The Red Devil’s Chronicles’ Devil May Cry January 2022 News Updates: Crypto Trouble, Anniversaries, Merch, etc.
Hey, how's it going? Hope everyone's 2022 year has started off all right. Here are all of January 2022's Devil May Cry related news updates I've found:
1. There's going to be another Devil May Cry V pachislot game.
2. CAPCOM is looking for content creators from USA.
3. January marks Johnny Bosch (Nero)'s and Morikawa Toshiyuki (Dante)'s birth dates.
4. The Deluxe version of Asmus Toys' DMCV Vergil figure comes with spiral swords. b) Speaking of figures, I came across this really nice-looking Trish one on Ebay from H3ll.
5. January marks the anniversaries of Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, and Devil May Cry 4.
6. Prime1Studio celebrates Devil May Cry's 20th anniversary by selling certain merch that can only be found in the Shinjuku Marui Annex, in the Prime 1 Studio Gallery of Japan. b) Another thing you can find there.
7. Speaking of merch, the CAPCOM Cafe's holding another Devil May Cry V event this month with these cute little things available. b) And Dante's feature on the CAPCOM store's new art promo. c) And the CAPCOM store has these Devil May Cry V themed manicure sets. d) And more.
8. Crypto/NFT groups are stealing Casey Edwards' Devil May Cry V sound tracks. 9. The Visions of V manga got more updates.
My Thoughts On These Updates:
1. It's too bad that these pachislot/pachinko titles are exclusive to Japan, but we can thank Youtube for some of the wacky footage produced (these are from the previous pachislot title).
2. If I lived in USA and knew what to share from my own content I've created over the years, I would've loved to participate in the Capcom Creators program.
3. A happy (belated) birthday to Johnny and Toshiyuki. Great voice actors for sure.
4. I need more money....to have whatever figures Asmus toys creates. They definitely have improved on their figure building. I'm not much into female character usually, but that Trish figure looks really nice.
5. Happy anniversary to the 3 Devil May Cry games that came out January many years ago. I remember after playing the 1st Devil May Cry how excited I was to play DMC2. Even though I've played games since my preschool/kindergarten years, I still didn't understand gaming at first, I thought DMC2 was better than DMC1 due to the visuals, and stuff. But as the years went by, I understood more and can definitely see the reasons for the backlash with this game. But without it, there wouldn't have been a DMC3 to make up for the mistakes. And it had some pretty great concepts with it, too. Speaking of DMC3...Ahh, Special Edition. After playing the original 3rd, I got hyped when I found out that you can play as Vergil (my 2nd favourite character), fight Jester as a mini boss, and unlock more bonus content. Despite the lack of extra levels, I still enjoyed it. DMC4 on the other hand, I was so hyped about this game until I saw how repetitive and unfinished it was. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the cinematics, characters, and gameplay mechanics, but this game definitely needed more stuff happening.
6 and 7. That's awesome what CAPCOM features on their promo art for their store, and those acrylic stands in the next cafe event look so adorable. Japan really has better things when it comes to video game stuff. I got curious and looked up Devil May Cry stuff on Ebay, and I found out that you can get quite a bit of the CAPCOM store items on there, especially the Prime1Studio statues. Thing is, I'm not sure if Japan ships to Canada. Even if they did, it's very costly (according to the prices displayed). It's interesting that they have a manicure set 'cause I happen to be an aesthetician (someone who does nails and skincare stuff), so these would be interesting to have for my own enjoyment when taking care of my nails, especially the fact that they come with oils that are supposed to smell like the character fragrances.
8. If there's one thing I can't freaking stand, it's art thieves. Always get permission from artists if you want to share or sell something from them, even if they're credited properly. I've had to deal with a few Devil May Cry Facebook groups (and I got kicked out of 3 of them for this reason) for sharing fan art without the artists' permissions. Yes, giving proper credit like profile links and such is great, but please...please...PLEASE ask permission from them before sharing their stuff? If anything, you're just a clout chaser that’s stealing their clout and motivation of wanting to continue making any more content more than helping them out. I admit that I made these mistakes on my Facebook pages in the past, but I've removed all of them since 2020 and don't plan on reposting fan content anymore (except mod links) , unless I get permission which I will show proof of. I really hope that Casey gets his songs back. 9. I've been seeing some image previews and fan reactions on Twitter often of the Visions of V manga's continuation, but I still need to catch up. Glad it's still ongoing compared to the DMC1 comics and DMC3 mangas.

My April 2022 "toy haul" finally arrived (these are mostly clear files, stickers, acrylic stands, and Nendoroid parts). From left top row to bottom right row: Bellfine Attack on Titan Clear File A4 Eren; Square Enix NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... Hanging Pouch [Emil]; Bell house Acrylic Stand Skater ver. NARUTO Shippuden Sasuke Uchiha; M.I.C. PuriPla Puchi Studio Obitsu Kewpie (R) Part (Yellow Room) Plastic Model; Arma Bianca Attack on Titan Eren Ani-Art aqua label Clear File; B-Side Label CAPCOM x B-SIDE LABEL Sticker Devil May Cry 20th Vergil & Dante (Water-resistant PVC Stickers); COSPA Code Geass Re;surrection New Illustration Lelouch Waterproof Sticker; PROOF Attack on Titan Stand Panel Mini 1, 7, 6, 3, 2, & 5; COSPA Code Geass Re;surrection New Illustration Lelouch Tin Badge; Good Smile Company Nendoroid Doll Hand Parts Set 02 almond milk & cream.
I definitely need to stop hoarding clear files, and now acrylic stands. These are so expensive when you think, “they are only a few bucks.” However, when there are shipping restrictions, and so many of them (acrylic stands) at once, it gets kind of expensive to keep hoarding. It’s hard to resist when they are based on characters I love, however, so I am just hoping they won’t release more...anytime soon. Lol!
I love the Emil pouch, he’s so freaking adorable and has his skeleton torso under the cloak. The rest of the stuff is super nice too, I love the AOT acrylic stand panels -- I got all the ones with Eren, and a few clear files of him as well. Of course, I love the Lulu and Sasuke stuff, although I was almost not going to get Sasuke’s acrylic stand. I am not fond of him wearing street clothes. But then I saw it was in-stock, and my order hadn’t shipped yet, so I added him as well as the adorable PuriPla Kewpie plastic model. I hope I can get the other version as well; I got this one because of the black kitty in the scene. I am so tempted to leave it un-built, because it’s so freaking cute like this too (and so tiny!). DX

Ninty Direct Feb 2021 Thoughts
That was uh. Kind of disappointing, actually.
I suppose it was inevitable that we weren’t seeing Pokemon since they’re gonna do their own announcement. But like. Coulda done better here.
(oh no you’re now introduced to my awful awful handwriting, is this better or worse than my cursed interests? you decide)
Anyway I wrote down everything they announced so here we go
Pyra/Mythra in Smash: I don’t give a single shit about the Xenoblade series, but it’s one of like 2 IPs Nintendo has had in the last decade so sure whatever they can have second a character as a treat. I’m mostly just annoyed this wasn’t a third-party character.
Fall Guys Switch: This feels inevitable. It also feels about 5 months too late.
Outer Wilds Switch: I’ve heard some absolutely excellent things about this game, so fair enough. I’m not sure I’d buy it on the Switch, but I haven’t bought it at all yet, so.
Famicom Detective Club: This looks like a Ren’py game if it had an actual budget, but still used Ren’py for some reason. Prooobably not biting on this one chief.
Samurai Warriors 5: The only Warriors game I’ve played is the first hyrule warriors, and the only Nobunaga game I’ve played was Pokemon Conquest (it’s a trip), so. I don’t understand the obsession they have over there for this bloke, like imagine if Australia made like a tv series a year and a large handful of video games about Ned Kelly or something.
Legend of Mana: Shit I should go play Octopath Traveler huh
Monster Hunter Rise: Those monster designs looked pretty kickass, and those human designs made me crack up laughing. I’ve never played Monster Hunter, and I don’t think this is gonna change that.
Mario Golf: Hey look they confirmed Waluigi as playable ahead of time so people wouldn’t complain, good job guys. The multiplayer of this looked silly as hell, but I’m not spending 80 bucks on wii sports tennis for a multiplayer mode ill drag my mates to play all of once before we go back to playing Beetle Adventure Racing.
Tales from the Borderlands: Wait telltale is still around? Ok…? I haven’t played Borderlands and don’t really care for the Telltale style so nah
Capcom Arcade Stadium: They could have made a peripheral like the NES/SNES mini, but they didn’t, and it’s for the best. The fact that one of the games is free implies to me that the rest are going to be overcosted, though.
Stubbs the Zombie: What the fuck am I looking at. Apparently this is a remaster of an old Xbox game, but I’ve never heard of it. Weird as fuck, but sure.
No More Heroes III: No more Heroes is a franchise that I’ve never played, but always wanted to. It seems right up my alley aesthetic-wise, and the gameplay looks pretty solid too- probably gonna try one of the older ones first, though.
Neon White: Speaking of aesthetic. This looks anime as fuck and edgy in a good way, and the gameplay looks real fun. I actually really want to check this out, and no, it’s not just because of the skull masked goth gf on the cover. (Doesn’t hurt, though.)
DC Super Hero Girls Teen Power: Jesus, this looks like a bad tie-in game from the mid 2000s. Not like Battle for Bikini Bottom, more like a Jimmy Neutron. And while I really liked the Jimmy Neutron game as a kid (shame about the show), this doesn’t look like it’ll stand up to that…high bar. Listening to this trailer made me want to die a little bit inside.
Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for Neighbourville: I miss PopCap. Peggle 3, never.
Miitopia: This looks cute, and will probably lead to the same sort of 3am DMs that happened with Tomodachi Life. If it’s a full priced game, it probably won’t sell at all.
Animal Crossing New Horizons Mario items: uhhh sure. Don’t have that game, so.
Triangle Strategy: Aww fuck it’s a final fantasy tactics that looks like octopath and it might have an actually good story, shiiiiiiiiit. I’m gonna give the demo a try before I land on this, but I’m optimistic.
Star Wars Hunters: When was the last time we had an actually good Star Wars game? And don’t say Fallen Order. Yeah, didn’t think so.
KO City: Ah, the bottom of the barrel. Didn’t think it would take this long. At this point, the pseudo-cartoony style everything has because they’re trying to ape Fortnite is extremely grating on me. (I definitely thought this ad was for Fortnite stuff at first)
World’s End Club: OK this one has me actually hyped. I knew that Kodaka (director/writer of the Danganronpa series) and Uchikoshi (director/writer of the Zero Escape series) were working on a joint project, and we’re finally seeing the results. Both of them have multiple excellent games under their respective belts, and this new game looks like a fun spin on what I’m sure a lot of people were expecting from the pair. Literally both of them have made a game where (spoilers I guess, Keara stop reading here you haven’t played VLR yet) there’s a death game going on while the characters are unaware the world fucking ended, so to see the idea of the death game getting interrupted and the characters actually having to live in the dead world is really cool. I’m paying cloooose attention to this one.
Hades (Physical Release): Dang now if I buy hades I can choose to have some of my money go to EB games or JB hifi or something. Cooooooooooooool.
Ninja Gaiden Collection: This just made me wonder why Ryu Hayabusa isn’t in Smash yet. Is it because there’s already a Ryu?
Age of Calamity DLC: I don’t think I mentioned this in my post yesterday, but I would have put money on DLC for this game coming out. I still haven’t played it, but the first Hyrule Warriors had so much fucking DLC so this was inevitable in my eyes.
Bravely Default 2: Uhhh its another JRPG man idk what you want me to say. Didn’t play the first one, apparently its good.
Ghosts n Goblins Resurrection: Kinda funny having this next to the free original in the Capcom Arcade Stadium. Capcom is reviving old franchises, I guess? Where’s Mega Man Battle Network, cowards?
SaGa Frontier: I’ve heard good things about the SaGa series, but this looks awful. Not like gameplay wise, the style for the models and shit in game just disinterests me.
Apex Legends: Is anyone still playing this game?
BOTW 2 (no news): I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed. Next Direct, I guess.
Skyward Sword HD: I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.
Seriously though, I was expecting 3 of the best Zeldas ever made to get ports, and we got the one that I wasn’t interested in. Fuck you too, I guess.
Splatoon 3: I actually was super interested in this, seeing as the trailer looked like it was gonna be for some like… side game, 3D RPG or something, exploring the origins of the Splatoon world? But then it’s just Splatoon 3. And like, I know people really like that series, but it never appealed to me. The world is neat! But I’m not interested in the series as it is.
And that’s the tea.
ADDENDUM:
shit that’s this weekend? huh ok -New Hearthstone expansions revealed, kinda like WOTC does with magic every so often, just like “here’s the next couple sets btw”. Since they do nothing but plagiarise off each other and MTG is having a set based on another WOTC property this year (D&D), there’s going to be a Starcraft set. -Diablo 4 release date that will not be stuck to since COVID is still a thing -people are hoping for starcraft 3. Blizzard to announce Starcraft 2 Episode 1. -New WoW expansion announced, determined objectively to be “worst ever” before trailer is even finished

Nintendo Direct Mini live-ish thoughts:
- It took me way too long to occur to me that the first thing was Monster Hunter - I was guessing Dragon Age initially and wondering if Capcom makes that.
- 2B is finally eligible for Smash Bros! Too bad DLC support for it has long since ended. Oh well.
- I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Mega Man Battle Network games, and I’m not sure if they’ve been ported before. Neat! I like how they’re showing off the music mode and one of the songs is 3 seconds long. The aesthetic shown off at the end reminds me a lot of Digimon World 3. Maybe I’ll get it if it’s cheap.
- Blanc looks cute and heartwarming.
- Hooray, Monkey Island! One of my favourite games as a kid, despite never making much progress and not understanding the jokes (such as the Red Herring, or how the swordfighting been verbal exchanges references lots of movies where the winner would be the one with the best comeback - and not necessarily the most skill with a sword)
- I wish Rabbid Lumas didn’t exist. The Rabbid skeletons (or whatever they’re called) looked surprisingly cool though.
- Battle of Noah has a very similar aesthetic to Bravely Default. I like it.
- Railgrade looks neat.
- As does RPG Time.
- As does Sonic Frontier. I really hope they did proper QA testing for this one, since the relative lack of it in recent games has been their biggest shortcoming IMO.
- Live a Live is in good old 2D HD. Hot take, I don’t like that art style much. Demo save data being transferred to the full game goes without saying at this point - I don’t think they need to bother saying that anymore.
- Been spending most our lives livin’ in a Hunter’s Paradise.
- Ah yes, my favourite 3rd party Switch game, FEW Three Hopes.
- Hooray, Persona! I’m not sure if I saw it coming or not. I doubt I’ll get them though since I already have them - and P3P and P4G on a handheld system already. Maybe if P3P manages to re-add the overworld exploration P3 and P3 FES had I’ll get it, but I doubt that’ll happen.

MegaMan PSP Games - Powered Up / Maverick Hunter X
youtube
The Mega Man series has always been tough for newcomers to dive into. Its a series based on challenge, skill, and memorizing stages and patterns. The original series was restrained by the technical limitations of the time, so they look more cartoony and kid friendly. The Super Nintendo’s Mega Man X series was a sequel intended to carry the torch and bring the Blue Bomber into the 16-bit era with a new look, new moves, and a new, more mature storyline.
In 2005 Capcom announced a pair of simultaneous releases for Sony’s PlayStation Portable handheld console. Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X were remakes of the first games in the Mega Man and Mega Man X series that utilized the 3D capabilities of the PlayStation Portable to render new ways to experience these gems of gaming. Both were remade with the idea to be accessible to newcomers, and plans were in the works for sequels to both games based on Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X2.
Unfortunately, sluggish sales would lead to both sequels being canceled. Today we have the Mega Man and Mega Man X Legacy Collections to give us our fill, but these titles were more than just ports. There were new features, new bosses, they were practically their own games worthy of their own discussion. That’s why today we’re going to be taking a look at Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.
MegaMan Powered Up
It’s said that when designing Mega Man, Keiji Inafune wanted to use a “super deformed” style for the characters. Big heads on little bodies for a funny, cute look. The problem was that the technology of the time made it difficult to portray this style, so a compromise was made. The characters were still cute, but the proportions weren’t as exaggerated as originally intended. Inafune would get his chance to try his “chibi” designs when Capcom announced Mega Man Powered Up in 2005, a complete remake of the original Mega Man, updated for Sony’s new PSP handheld.
Gaming had changed a lot between the 1980’s and the mid-2000’s. Before, game design was influenced by arcade trends. Challenge and difficulty were added to games of the time to hide the fact that these games theoretically could be beaten within the span of a few hours. The original Mega Man games came from an era where rental services like Blockbuster made it easy for someone to spend $5 instead of $50 on a game for the week. If a game could be beat in an afternoon, then there was no reason for the gamer to buy the game. This was also helped by the lack of save features in these early games.
In the mid-2000’s, however, these tricks were irrelevant. Game development had reached a point where games had enough content. There was no longer a need to pad a game with challenge to keep them from beating it in a single sitting. With this in mind, Capcom sought to re-work the original Mega Man series for the next generation of kids who hadn’t grown up with the originals. Now there are multiple difficulties to cater to different kinds of players.
The premise, characters, levels, music, almost everything in the game are based on the original Mega Man, but now everything is expanded upon. Characters pop-out in 3D, and the levels follow the same designs, but now the world feels more alive. The story is played out through character dialogue and little cutscenes. This game would go on to influence the story and characters in the Archie tie-in comics.
Two new characters were created specifically for this game, each with their own unique level. Time Man and Oil Man bring the game’s original six Robot Masters up to eight, in line with the rest of the series. Oil Man’s design would cause controversy as it closely resembles the “Blackface” stereotype, with his black skin and big red lips.
For some background, Japanese artists are influenced by those who came before them, and a lot of the original manga artists learned from American cartoonists. Blackface portrayals were prominent in American cartoons and comics, which were imported to Japan after World War II. The average person in Japan doesn’t have any context for the history of Blackface in America, which doesn’t excuse the depictions. Because of this cultural misunderstanding, Oil Man’s skin was turned dark blue and his lips were colored yellow.
My favorite addition to this game is the ability to play as the boss characters you defeat. Each boss has their trusty weapon as their base weapon, and now the empty hole they left in their stage has been filled by a rogue Mega Man who’s looking for trouble. There are other playable characters, but I won’t spoil them for you.
I’m disappointed that we never got to see any sequels to Powered Up. It seemed like the perfect formula for Mega Man. Remake 1 through 6 in this style, maybe 7 and 8, then they could’ve done 9 and 10 too. Every time I see a new trailer for 11 I just think of it as a sequel to Powered Up, but with a more streamlined design. Don’t get me started on Mighty No. 9, the unfortunate “spiritual successor” to the Mega Man series.
Mega Man Powered Up is one of the best PSP games, and possibly one of the best Mega Man games. It’s unfortunate that it came out too early in the PSP’s lifespan to really take off, maybe if Capcom had ported the game to the PS2 or Gamecube it would have fared better.
MegaMan Maverick Hunter X
Maverick Hunter X, the companion title to Mega Man Powered Up, is a remake of the 1993 Super Nintendo classic Mega Man X. Unlike Powered Up, which completely redesigned the classic Mega Man, Maverick Hunter X stays relatively true to the original design and style of the Mega Man X franchise. It features anime cutscenes, similar to those used in Mega Man X3 and X4. One could argue that the animation and voice acting are noticeably better this time around.
While Powered Up was designed to be accessible for anyone, Maverick Hunter X is designed to be a more mature challenge. There’s no Easy Mode this time, only Normal and Hard. The first Mega Man X was never as challenging as later games in the series, but it wasn’t a walk in the park. Maverick Hunter X isn’t easier, but it does feel a little tighter to control.
The MegaMan series has never been strong on plot, but the Mega Man X sub-series does have a surprisingly strong lore. This has only ever been casually hinted at, with little exposition besides a few animated cutscenes or slideshows. Maverick Hunter X delivers a decent story in the form of an animated opening cutscene, as well as character dialogue between stages. Each boss battle opens with a back-and-forth between X and the boss in question where they explain their perspective before jumping into the action.
Once you beat the game you unlock what’s probably the coolest bonus a video game can have: a 25 minute animated film. The Day of Σ is a self-contained animated special that ties in with the game. The special is a prequel that ends where the game begins, and it tells the story of Sigma and the other reploids going Maverick.
This approach to video game storytelling works surprisingly well because it doesn’t interfere with the gameplay. Most story-driven games feel bloated with unending cutscenes, other games don’t feel fleshed out enough when they don’t include any cutscenes. Maverick Hunter X including an anime OVA is similar to 2003’s Dot Hack series from Bandai, which also came with a four part animated mini-series. 2010’s Dragon Ball Raging Blast, also from Namco Bandai, similarly featured a 20 minute special called The Plan to Eradicate The Super Saiyans.
Fans of the Mega Man X series have noted some inconsistencies with Maverick Hunter X and The Day of Sigma compared to the rest of the franchise. These story inconsistencies wouldn’t matter if Capcom had gone through with their plan to reboot the X series. Had they continued the groundwork started by Maverick Hunter X, future games would fill in the blanks, and re-tell the original stories in new and exciting ways.
As far as fan speculation goes, we can draw all of Mega Man’s problems in the late 2000’s/early 2010’s right here. Mega Man Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X were great games, but for one reason or another neither title was very successful at the time of release. What’s worse is, Maverick Hunter X was available digitally on the PlayStation Network Store when the PlayStation Vita debuted, but Mega Man Powered Up couldn’t get the same treatment due to technical issues.
Both games are great and it's a shame that they’re lost to time, trapped forever on a long forgotten handheld. I have nothing against the Mega Man Legacy Collections, but I miss the days when developers attempted to remake their classic games for later generations. While there’s no arguing against the value of preserving original games and making them available to be played as originally intended, I think the world would benefit from more modernized remakes that take advantage of today’s technology to do things they could never originally do.
I hope one day Capcom releases both Mega Man PSP games. Possibly alongside other mid-2000’s curiosities like Mega Man X Command Mission and Mega Man Network Transmission. There are enough oddball Mega Man spin-offs to fill a few more Legacy Collections, I think.
