Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914–1977) was a Brazilian writer, poet, and social critic who became one of the most important voices in Afro-Brazilian literature. She rose to prominence with her powerful depictions of poverty, racism, and social inequality in Brazil, documenting the struggles of life in São Paulo’s favelas (shantytowns). Despite her limited formal education, she became an internationally recognized author, proving that the voices of marginalized Black women could not be silenced.

Born in Sacramento, Minas Gerais, to a poor Afro-Brazilian family, Carolina had only two years of formal schooling but developed a love for reading and writing. As a single mother, she moved to São Paulo and lived in Canindé, one of the city’s poorest favelas, where she worked as a waste picker, collecting recyclable materials to support her children. Throughout her life, she documented her experiences in personal journals, detailing the harsh realities of poverty, racial discrimination, and class oppression.

Her breakthrough came in 1960 with the publication of Quarto de Despejo: Diário de uma Favelada (Child of the Dark: The Diary of Carolina Maria de Jesus), a raw, unfiltered account of daily life in the favela. The book became an instant success, selling tens of thousands of copies in Brazil and being translated into multiple languages. Her writing exposed the extreme social inequalities in Brazil, challenging the myth of racial democracy and forcing the middle and upper classes to confront the realities of the country’s poorest citizens.

Despite her literary success, Carolina faced institutional racism, sexism, and economic exploitation. The Brazilian elite and literary circles dismissed her work as "unrefined," and she struggled financially even after gaining international recognition. She continued to write, publishing additional books, poems, and short stories, but she never escaped poverty entirely.

Carolina Maria de Jesus is now recognized as one of Brazil’s most important Black intellectuals and social critics. Her work remains a testament to the power of Black women's voices, the struggle for dignity in the face of oppression, and the fight against systemic inequality. Today, she is celebrated as a symbol of Afro-Brazilian resistance, feminist empowerment, and literary brilliance, proving that knowledge and self-expression can be tools of liberation.

QUARTO DE DESPEJO (2023) Carolina Maria de Jesus e Ruth de Souza

Quarto de Despejo" é um livro escrito por Carolina Maria de Jesus, uma escritora brasileira nascida em Minas Gerais em 1914 e falecida em 1977. O livro foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1960 e é um relato autobiográfico que apresenta o cotidiano de Carolina Maria de Jesus na favela do Canindé, em São Paulo.

O título "Quarto de Despejo" refere-se ao local onde Carolina vivia, um barraco precário na favela. No livro, ela descreve as condições de vida difíceis, a pobreza extrema, a fome e as lutas diárias para sobreviver. Carolina registrava suas experiências em diários, nos quais ela expressava seus pensamentos, emoções e observações sobre a realidade à sua volta.

O livro ganhou destaque por retratar a vida de uma mulher negra e pobre no Brasil durante os anos 1950 e 1960. Carolina Maria de Jesus foi uma das primeiras escritoras negras a alcançar reconhecimento no país, e "Quarto de Despejo" é considerado um importante documento histórico e literário que oferece uma visão única das condições de vida nas favelas brasileiras naquela época.

Going to be honest this one is a little lazy. I'm reusing old art because I drank too much last night and couldn't make myself draw new refs. And with reusing the old art I am realizing that I don't think I want to use the superhero versions of the JLI in this au. So eventually I am going to have redraw and reexamine the concept I have for Earth 310. But that will be after I do a Buddy Thunderstruck rewatch which is pretty far down on the to do list currently.

Joint IFAD and IDB project in Brazil will improve the lives of 210,000 rural people in the semiarid Piauí State

The UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) have joined forces to increase small-scale farmers’ income, and improve food and nutrition security, in the Piauí-Canindé basins, reaching 210,000 poor rural people in Piauí, one of the poorest regions in Brazil.

The new jointly funded Sustainable and Inclusive Piauí project (PSI), which was launched recently together with the government of Piauí, will also improve access to basic services including water and sanitation and will support rural communities to adapt to climate change.

IFAD is providing a US$18 million loan; IDB, a US$100 million loan; and the state of Piaui is contributing US$ 29.5 million to the overall project cost (US$ 147.5 million).

Rossana Polastri, IFAD’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, stressed that this is the first jointly funded project between IFAD and IDB in Brazil. “The partnership with the IDB allows IFAD to step up investments in environmental recovery, healthy nutrition, and digital solutions, while scaling up our operations in water and sanitation, in line with our goal to boost the sustainable development of rural families in one of the most vulnerable regions of Brazil,” she added.
