definitely one of the most difficult moments of my professional career was when i was doing tech support for [REDACTED]'s automated biomed research lab and like. hang on lemme greentext this
>tell them i can fix this issue in half an hour with a remote support session (aka Teamviewer)
>"you want to... control our computers???? over the internet????? like some kind of HACKER???????"
>their IT submits my request to upper management and after two weeks they reluctantly allow me to get remote access to their systems
>by logging into a virtual machine using a 20-digit password and then using a specific program inside of that virtual machine
>while sharing my screen with someone from their IT team the entire time
>finally get remote access to the PC with the issue
>go to open log files to start troubleshooting
>ERROR: User does not have read permissions.
>what the fuck
>ask their IT guy why it's saying that
>"...because we don't want you looking at our stuff, duh?"
>take deep breath before calmly explaining that i need to open files in order to fix their problem
>IT guy submits my request to upper management
>after another week i go through the whole process again but can actually open the log file this time
>cool, it's exactly the issue i thought it was and i know exactly how to solve it
>open the relevant settings file, change a single number, hit Save
>ERROR: User does not have write permissions.
>what the FUCK
>ask IT guy how i'm supposed to fix their system if i can't change literally anything on it
>takes 20 minutes of arguing to get him to admit that maybe i need write access
>he submits the request to upper management
>a week goes by
>upper management denies it
>says i can just verbally tell the IT guy on the call what to type and he'll do it for me
>deep breaths. deep breaths.
>start third remote session
>go to open the relevant .log file in notepad, which isn't the default program it opens with for some reason
>they fucking disabled right clicking
>[REDACTED] has a $118 billion market cap btw
>manage to walk the IT guy through using the command line (which he had never seen before and was scared of) to edit the relevant file
>three weeks go by
>new support ticket in my inbox
>"why didn't your fix fix this completely unrelated issue?"
>they still won't give me write access
>VP of [REDACTED] yells at me in our weekly meeting for taking so long to fix a third unrelated issue they never submitted a ticket for and is also not actually an "issue" but an intended feature of our software that they don't like
>i went to college for this
#second worst part of that job was getting emails from a customer like#“hey can you bump our ticket to the top of the queue? it's really impacting our ability to do research. no pressure though! :)”#and then i'd check who it's from and it's fucking St. Jude's Children's Hospital#“no pressure but you are directly killing kids with cancer”

The remainder of the crew’s time in orbit was spent carrying out nearly 40 science experiments and research, including some that sought to better understand space adaptation syndrome — a type of microgravity-specific motion sickness.
Gillis, a trained violinist, also brought her instrument along for the mission and delivered a rendition of “Rey’s Theme” from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Gillis’ music was sent back to Earth using SpaceX’s Starlink as a test of the satellite network’s potential to provide in-space connectivity.
Menon also took time to read a book she coauthored — called “Kisses From Space” — to her family as well as a group of patients from St. Jude Children’s Hospital as part of a fundraiser.
Sunday’s anticipated return marks the conclusion of the third trip to space for the specific Crew Dragon capsule powering the Polaris Dawn mission.
The spacecraft — named “Resilience” by the NASA astronauts onboard its first trip to space in November 2020 called (Crew-1) — flew the 2021 Inspiration 4 mission.
That trip, also funded by Isaacman, saw him and three crewmates circle Earth for three days as part of a fundraiser for childhood cancer research.

Love getting phone calls from a number identified only as "SEATTLE CANCER."
Reassuring. Subtle. No notes.
(It's the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, recently merged under Fred Hutch since it was all pretty much shared resources anyway, but obviously not all of the renaming has caught up yet...)
#i also enjoy how the fred hutchinson cancer research center got shortened to 'fred hutch' cause nobody was saying all that ever#adventures in branding#also: adventures in health care when nobody thinks you have cancer but you keep getting sent to the cancer hospital anyway#again i say: reassuring. no notes.

addendum to the last post but more positive: the player who had the Other health issue is scheduled to travel with the team and play in their next series, his jersey sold for $8,000 in the auction tonight. his mom bought it <3
#all the proceeds from the jersey auctions (100%! ALL of them!) and the 50% of the 50/50 pot that usually goes to the org#all gets donated to our local hospital and their cancer research center#the jerseys sold on friday and saturday alone are bringing in almost $60k#that’s a HUGE deal for a town like this. we are not a wealthy populace by any means. not traditional wealth at least#fairbanks ice dogs#originals

Over the past few months, various events or things have triggered me.
Some are minuscule, such as a sound or smell that will set off several memories. Others are more significant, a bodily sensation, an ache, cough, or the like that provokes a more powerful emotional/psychological response.
I note these reactions, a tactic I use to help ground myself. From there, I can move forward, understanding more about it (the trigger) and my relationship with it. If I can, witnessing myself is the trick; detecting what is occurring before being consumed.
The milestone of the five-year cancer-free mark is not an exemption from fear and worry. Sometimes they peak at the same level they did while amid treatment -- periodically even more so.
Nights are difficult. Anyone who has experienced a tumultuous and life-altering event can attest that this is when the little dark fears come out of the woodwork.
A few weeks ago, I returned from Samsø, Denmark (see the previous update here or blog post on cyclical.life). A small island with under 4,000 inhabitants, nestled snuggly off the Jutland peninsula. Though it has several adorable little towns, the 40-something square mile island is used primarily for agricultural purposes. To say that it is a walkers' paradise is an understatement.
When I am state-side, I often sit with these "little dark fears" only to a certain point. It wasn't a bold pursuit or some other brave endeavor that granted me the time and pace to do so on Samsø; it happened as if on its own.
One night, awoken by worries and fears, I got dressed, grabbed my raincoat, and went for a walk. It was almost a knee-jerk reaction. As I joked to a few people, the beautiful thing about an island is that you can't get lost; you ramble through fields and upon well-worn tractor paths, and sooner or later, you'll encounter the ocean.
Every evening I filled my rucksack with: a rainjacket, another base layer, extra socks, a flashlight, a field recorder, and bread, butter, and honey, just in case. Then, I'd begin walking if I woke in the night, regardless of the time and conditions, to discover that the fears were present.
State-side, if my worries and fears become too great, and my audiobook or music doesn't cut through the mix, I'll bust out trusty ol' Netflix. I didn't have such distractions there. Though I purchased a Danish SIM card for emergencies, I didn't carry my phone or bring my pre-downloaded audiobook.
Bringing the field recorder was the best decision. I didn't intend to record myself, but I'd sit on some slight rise or the beach and try to collect my thoughts and gather my ideas while talking aloud - a practice I began while in school as it helped me work out ideas. My words were wandering much in the way I was rambling physically.
I have a project in mind for the recordings. Though what follows are some excerpts and snippets I pulled that I found revealing.
*
I move forward in this place (of recovery)
A beacon pulling / a signal drawing
Being held - here
I have learned to live with the memory of you [cancer], as one does with something that echoed, a thing that came.
The lights of Aarhus could be another world - a gentle glow (western paling sky). Aarhus could be Boston from here - Mass General could be anywhere. I could be anywhere. I am here.

Leukaemia and Your Risk Factors: Is It Hereditary?
When exploring leukemia and its risk factors, a common concern arises: “Is blood cancer genetic?” This crucial question addresses many individuals' fears about family history and the hereditary nature of this serious illness. In this article, we will delve into what leukemia is, examine its risk factors, and specifically address whether blood cancer can be inherited.
What is Leukemia?
Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It is characterized by the production of an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells, which crowd out healthy blood cells and disrupt the body’s ability to fight infection, control bleeding, and transport oxygen.
Types of Leukemia
Leukemia is classified into various types based on the speed of progression and the type of blood cell affected:
Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL): Common in children, progresses rapidly.
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML): Affects both adults and children, known for its quick progression.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): Primarily affects adults, progresses slowly.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML): Can occur at any age but is more common in adults, characterized by a slower progression.
Risk Factors for Leukemia
Understanding the risk factors can help assess the likelihood of developing leukemia. Key risk factors include:
Genetic Disorders: Certain genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome, are associated with a higher risk of leukemia.
Family History: A family history of leukemia can increase one's risk, although it is not the most significant factor.
Previous Cancer Treatment: Individuals who have undergone chemotherapy or radiation therapy for other cancers have a higher risk of developing leukemia later in life.
Exposure to Chemicals: Exposure to chemicals like benzene is linked to an increased risk of leukemia.
Smoking: Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that can increase the risk of acute myeloid leukemia.
Age and Gender: Leukemia can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed in older adults. Certain types are more prevalent in males than females.
Understanding Heredity
Heredity involves the transmission of genetic traits from parents to children. While not all cancers are hereditary, some genetic predispositions to develop cancer can be inherited. However, most leukemia cases are due to acquired genetic changes rather than inherited mutations.
Is Blood Cancer Genetic?
The answer to whether blood cancer is genetic involves understanding both inherited and acquired genetic changes:
Inherited Genetic Mutations: Some genetic mutations that increase leukemia risk can be passed from parents to children. While having a family member with leukemia does slightly increase your risk, most leukemia cases are not directly inherited.
Acquired Genetic Changes: Most genetic changes leading to leukemia occur during a person's lifetime and are not inherited. These changes can result from environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, or random errors in cell division. For instance, high levels of radiation or certain chemicals can damage DNA in blood cells, leading to leukemia.
Research and Genetic Testing
Ongoing research into leukemia's genetic factors and advancements in genetic testing have improved our ability to identify genetic mutations associated with increased risk. Genetic counseling and testing can be helpful for individuals with a strong family history of leukemia, providing insights into their risk and potential preventive measures.
Prevention and Early Detection
While preventing leukemia entirely is not possible, understanding and managing risk factors can help. Avoiding known carcinogens, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and staying informed about your family medical history are proactive steps. Regular medical check-ups and awareness of leukemia symptoms can improve outcomes if the disease develops.
In conclusion, while the question “Is blood cancer genetic?” can be answered affirmatively, it is crucial to understand that most cases of leukemia result from acquired genetic changes rather than inherited mutations. Awareness of risk factors, preventive measures, and early detection are essential for managing and potentially reducing the risk of leukemia.

I hate to link to Bezos but it’s apparently the only place selling it:
