Starting today, for the next 13 days until Halloween, we would like to introduce you to one legend, lore or mythical creature from each province and territory in Canada. Some you may know, some might be in your backyard but join us on this mythical discovery of The Great Canadian Monster Adventure! 🎃🗿🕯🍬🍁 Today’s mythical creature is the Gaasyendietha. According to Seneca mythology, it is a dragon that dwells in the deep of Lake Ontario. This dragon could fly on a trail of fire, and it could also spew fire. 🐉 Jacques Cartier, the French explorer who mapped much of the St. Lawrence river, kept a journal and in it he recorded that he and members of his crew saw what they described as "a giant finned snake" that moved like a caterpillar, using its side fins to propel itself forward in the water. Cartier's crew tried to capture the beast, but it moved too quickly and dove beneath the waters. When Cartier consulted with the indigenous peoples of the region, they called the creature "Gaasyendietha.” Have you seen or heard this legend or had a close encountered with the “hideous water snake, or serpent, of prodigious dimensions” of Lake Ontario? Tell your story! #thegreatcanadianadventure #canadianeducation #canadiansocialstudies #canadiana #canada🇨🇦 #canadianhome https://www.instagram.com/p/BpJA5aVgoCP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=q923fhp9b58l

🇨🇦 How often do we struggle through the process of learning things that just don’t captivate us? We learn mechanically from rote because we are compelled to ... not because we want to. Our kids don’t differ from us in this regard. While it might not be possible to captivate our child’s imagination in every aspect of their learning, our aim at The Great Canadian Adventure is to make geography and history come alive! We want to take a subject that can be seen as hard and humdrum and transform it into something that is both meaningful and exciting! As parents (home-educators or not) we all aim to get our kids excited about learning. We want them to ask those tough questions, and to want to know why. We want them to be educated and to make knowledge seeking into a lifelong habit. Leave the boring and the humdrum behind. Subscribe to The Great Canadian Adventure and turn history and geography education into a good time! 🗺💡#thegreatcanadianadventure #canadiangeography #canadianhistory #homeschooling #homeschooled #homeschooler #unschooling #unschooled #unschooler #subscriptionkit #subscriptionkitsforkids #educationcanbefun #charlesmschulz #quotestoliveby #lovetolearn #lettheadventurebegin #educationaladventure #explorecanada #comewithus #curatedcurriculum #canadiansocialstudies #letthemlearn #historicalthinking #criticalthinking #bycanadiansforcanadians https://www.instagram.com/p/BjP0Pc4n0Qp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ebbopjqaag8t

🇨🇦 Glaciers are powerful ice flows with enough strength to move mountains! Big Rock is a glacial erratic made of quartzite and quartzitic conglomerate that began as part of a landslide in the Athabasca River valley. It was carried on the top of a glacier, later ice stream, to its present resting place outside of Okotoks, Alberta. One fascinating feature of this erratic is the large split down the centre. A Blackfoot legend describes how this happened: “One hot summer day, Napi, the supernatural trickster of the Blackfoot peoples, rested on the rock because the day was warm and he was tired. He spread his robe on the rock, telling the rock to keep the robe in return for letting Napi rest there. Suddenly, the weather changed and Napi became cold as the wind whistled and the rain fell. Napi asked the rock to return his robe, but the rock refused. Napi got mad and just took the clothing. As he strolled away, he heard a loud noise and turning, he saw the rock was rolling after him. Napi ran for his life. The deer, the bison and the pronghorn were Napi's friends, and they tried to stop the rock by running in front of it. The rock rolled over them. Napi's last chance was to call on the bats for help. Fortunately, they did better than their hoofed neighbours, and by diving at the rock and colliding with it, one of them finally hit the rock just right and it broke into two pieces.” (Wikipedia) This legend explains why the rock is split into two pieces and also, why bats have squashed faces. This is a cautionary tale; providing helpful advice against taking back what you have freely given away to another. The Blackfoot people used Big Rock for both a landmark and as a medicine rock through the centuries. 🇨🇦 Maktaaq, anyone? Maktaaq is an Inuit delicacy made from strips of whale blubber. Most often eaten raw, this dish is rich in protein, fat, vitamins A, C, D and E, and omega-3 fatty acids. That’s pretty amazing for whale blubber 🐋🐳 Foods like Maktaaq helped the Inuit people stay strong and healthy in the inhospitable North with few options for fresh fruits and vegetables. Some people say that it tastes like fresh coconut 🥥 Would you be brave enough to try this interesting superfood? 🤔#maktaaq #yesplease #interestingfood #inuit #delecacy #stayhealthy #vitamins #healthyfats #lettheadventurebegin #thegreatcanadianadventure #canadiangeography #canadianhistory #homeschooling #homeschooled #homeschooler #unschooling #unschooled #unschooler #subscriptionkit #subscriptionkitsforkids #educationaladventure #explorecanada #comewithus #curatedcurriculum #canadiansocialstudies #letthemlearn #historicalthinking #criticalthinking #seriousaboutscience #learning https://www.instagram.com/p/BmI_Llig7R9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=696x8xmacv3u
