So when he befriended Sabo it was no surprise he had accidentally hurt him. Punched too hard, squeezed his hand too tight ect. And normally he didn’t care it was funny if anything. But he also hugged too tight and punched too hard when he was being affectionate. And he either had to learn to be gentle or at least wait till Sabo could handle it better. So he waited.

But. When Luffy appeared, a boy made of rubber. Ace realised he could never really hurt Luffy. Sure the boy complained but he was always fine. Ace could squeeze Luffy as hard as he wanted knock him on the head all he pleased and he would be ok. He never had to hold back in fear of breaking something or making him cry. But, it was because of luffy’s kindness and innocence ace learned to be gentle, not because he had to, but cause he wanted to. Because he wanted to show Luffy he cared in other ways, especially after Sabo died.
