Ugh, I really gotta stop getting into stuff because somebody describes it has having homoerotic relationships. This is not silence – a short poem.

My brain it fizzes and whirs,

My face hot and heavy,

My brain aching but alive,

The almost silent fizzing and popping of the carbonated drink poking at my mind as it struggles to decipher the needlessly complex wording of the English language,

The clicking and clacking of my computer keyboard as my fingers dance across the letters,

The cars outside roar and hiss in my ear despite my distance,

The clock, in its endless need to distract me, thawks at my eardrums with an obsessive, repetitive passion I cannot ignore,

The fabric of my sleeves scrapes across my skin with an unyielding fury, catching on the corner of my laptop and dragging my fingers backwards with it,

My hair trails sits behind my neck, its thin fibers agitating my skin,

The cat slumbering on the bed shifts, the rustling adding its part,

The boiler, insistent on joining the chorus, breaks out in a great hiccuping song, stealing my attention completely from my work,

This is not silence.

Do not whistle!

Do not speak!

I am deafened enough as it is!

And I have work to do.

Anyway, it is basically five am and after making a cardboard inkle loom to try tablet weaving, I enjoyed it. Both the cardboard carpentry and the tablet weaving.

Good news/bad news in regards to the weaving, the pegs finally gave out bad news, good news, I realized the tv dinner tables have two parallel bars between the legs, so flipping it over on top of ANOTHER tv table, and I can set up a weighted warp without worrying about the cats smacking the weights.

It’s still fumbly, and the sound of 4 dollars worth of pennys clacking about in plastic bags is a bit grating. But it’s something I can work on.

Between the pegs giving out, trying out a weighted warp set up, and just trying things, I ended up with a lot of scrap yarn.

Specifically, crochet cotton.

Now I don’t use crochet cotton often, and with the amount of joins I’d end up having to make, even if I crocheted something with it, I don’t think it would make me happy.

So what to do with all these bits?

I’ve already mentioned cats, multiple cats, so multiple slicker brushes exist in the house. And the Ren faire before last, I learned you could use slicker brushes to card fibers for spinning on a budget.

So I’ve been working through the scraps as best I can, having to relearn carding because cotton fibers are shorter than fleece and need to be treated differently.

The short fibers of cotton also means, that any attempts at spinning should be done with an specific awareness of weight/tension, as the draft and yarn are more susceptible to snapping. Now I have a top whorl drop spindle, I’ve used it for wool and even cat hair (no I didn’t use the cat hair yarn, it was just for something to do) and it lasted a bit, but after too much over spin and the dowel end smacking my desk, it snapped.

So I had some options,

Try the drop spindle again, carding out the end of the snap and drafting back into it

make a supported spindle, I have dowels, I have chunks of cardboard I could soak in modge podge for the whorl, and I’m willing to try whittling a point, if using a pencil sharpener wouldn’t work

Did you guess the most convoluted and labor intensive option?

Because I did.

It’s called a Charkha, a spinning wheel that’s design originated in India, and to my understanding, was built with cotton in mind.

It’s hand operated opposed to pedal powered (I’m assuming modifications could be made) but that along with the fact the actual wheel portion of the spinning wheel isn’t a usually a wheel, but instead two sets of spokes connected via string, I figured it would actually be possible to achieve with cardboard carpentry.

I got one of the spoke sets done already, I have to finish the other one then see how they act when tied together and spun.

Theoretically, this set up should be pretty sustainable, considering how little tension is required to hold certain things in place, and how few actually moving parts there are, theoretically, it could be a functioning replacement for a full wooden charkha. Not permanent, that’s just the nature of cardboard, but certainly more long lasting than the inkle loom.

Rivulet was born in a tropical area, but their family moved up north when they were a pup, so they don't remember much of it. She's been best friends with Saint her whole life and begged her parents to take them in after their mother passed (it worked! They're adoptive siblings :)). She also has ADHD, and has very intense RSD.

Rivulet was always very interested in marine life & anything to do with water, and they've been told since they were young that they'd make a great athlete someday. She was on every track and swim team throughout school, and was a highly valued member of her teams. In her late teens, she was offered something she couldn't turn down -- a scholarship at a sports-focused college down south. Even if it meant leaving her childhood home, she was more than happy to accept.

They have now graduated college and are now working as a mechanic to pay off their loans and start a life for themselves. They still live with Saint, but have moved out of their parent's home. She's worried her parents will want to move back up north (her younger siblings are not fans of the new scenery...) but she figures even if they do, they'll always come back to visit.

Since coming to town she's made a few friends, her closest friends being Monk and Moon. She's also developed a massive crush on the mailscug, Spearmaster. They're horrified to confess, though, since they've never been in a relationship before. But no matter what happens, she'll always have Saint to help her through it :))

Ooh ok so hot tip I learned while working at the library. If you have problems buying things online because of the retail therapy or the excitement of the delivery, order things into the library. You can order as much as you want without spending a dime and then you get books! Or movies! Or board games!

It's like drugs but library

as a librarian, i can't encourage you enough to check out stuff you don't think you'll get around to reading

like other institutions, at the end of the day we have to use numbers to justify our existence and inform our financial decisions

check out that novel by that author you like even if you know there's no time to finish it. check out a movie you like even if you can't watch it. check out a sewing machine even if you don't have time for a project. we don't check if you finish anything, and it all adds up.
