The Crinoline Skirt – A Victorian Fashion Trap
Andreas Hunæus (Danish, 1814 - 1886) • Princess Dagmar of Denmark with her dog • 1860s
A crinoline (/ˈkrɪn. əl. ɪn/) is a stiff or structured petticoat designed to hold out a skirt, popular at various times since the mid-19th century. Originally, crinoline described a stiff fabric made of horsehair ("crin") and cotton or linen which was used to make underskirts and as a dress lining. – Wikipedia
While the crinoline skirt was fashionable, it could also be very dangerous to wear. It is said that at least a few dozen women died in the mid-1800s because the widened skirts caught on things such as carriage wheels and machinery and also posed a fire hazard. A March 16, 1858 article from the New York Times described an incident where a woman's crinoline-widened skirts caught fire and she died. The same article discussed many such deaths occurring in London in the preceding months as well. The article went on to caution women about wearing such large skirts, because of the danger that they posed.
The crinoline hoop was pattened in April, 1856 by a Paris fashion designer.

There was much attention given to the crinoline by the media of its time, not only cautioning women about the dangers of this fashion contraption, but also ridiculing it through caricatures.

Dandy man
I don't know who this is, but I acquired this carte de visite of an unknown fashionable gentleman because I think he looks very well-dressed. Also because the picture was taken by Camille Silvy (1834-1910), a famous French photographer who had set up his studio at 38 Porchester Terrace in 1859. William Coningham once owned a house at 42 Porchester Terrace, but by the 1861 census a different family was living at that address.

Thoughts on Emily in Paris Season 4
Here's a list of my thoughts on the latest season in a random order. Feel free to add yours, too. I love how ridiculous this show is!
Do they not know that there are more European cities than just the capitals? The show is set in Paris, Alfie is from London, now they visit Rome and I think Sofia is from Athens?
What the actual fuck was this baby rattle perfume? Why??? Why would a baby need a perfume? Also isn't that dangerous af?
The Eurovision storyline was so stupid! The deadline for the song release is in September, and as soon as they are choses as the French act everyone would know about them. And then Mindy gets to be on Chinese Popstar and claims it’s better than Eurovision? Sorry, girl, nothing beats Eurovision!
In general, what is the timeline? Eurovision would be in May…how many months, years has Emily actually been in Paris? Just one year, I think, by the end of the season? How could all this plot, the relationship drama etc. fit into one year?
Why couldn't they have just make Camille move to Greece and be happy With Sofia? And is she fit to be a mother if she behaves so childishly and can't make decisions without her mother?
Languages: why is everyone's English so good? Also if Silvie is fluent in Italian, why would she speak English to her Italian lover? And why doesn’t Emily’s French improve?
I did not like Genevieve from the moment we met her. But I also don't understand why she wants to steel Gabriel after looking at his insta? Like I get why Emily likes/loves him. They have chemistry. But for Genevieve to lie about the French conversation and immediately make a move on Gabriel, she would have to know him a little better.
Emily and Gabriel: They were at the point where they said I love you to each other and now this? That was really lazy writing.
Skiing: So this reminded me of Bridget Jones: On the Edge of Reason. I've been skiing since I was 3 and it is not like riding a bike. Due to an injury, I couldn't ski for one winter and already after a two year break, I felt like I needed to take it slow the first day back. So to put Emily in this situation was really dangerous. Gabriel should have immediately taken the lift back up. This behaviour seemed totally out of character.
Emily can’t really move to Rome permanently…it wouldn’t work in the show. But she’ll definitely say “It’s Rome” a hundred times as an explanation for everything before she leaves Rome again.

Sarah Forbes Bonetta 1862, photograph by Camille Silvy (1834–1910).
"In 1862, the celebrated French photographer Camille Silvy captured the likeness of Sarah Forbes Bonetta (1843–1880) in a series of photographs that are now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
Often known as Queen Victoria's protegée or ward, Sarah lived a remarkable life, one which served to undermine pervasive imperialist attitudes in nineteenth-century Britain.

Sara Forbes Bonetta, (born Omoba Aina; 1843 – 15 August 1880)
Lithograph of Forbes Bonetta, after a drawing by Frederick E. Forbes, from his 1851 book Dahomey and the Dahomans; being the journals of two missions to the king of Dahomey, and residence at his capital, in the year 1849 and 1850
Sara Forbes Bonetta, (born Omoba Aina; 1843 – 15 August 1880), was an Egbado princess of the Yoruba people in West Africa who was orphaned during a war with the nearby Kingdom of Dahomey and later became the slave of King Ghezo of Dahomey. Her birth name, historians believe, was Aina but in the high society of 19th-century England she was Sarah Forbes Bonetta, an enslaved little girl from what is now the west African country of Benin who became Queen Victoria’s goddaughter. The historian David Olusoga has described Bonetta as a symbol in that “she became biographic shorthand for the perceived accomplishments of Britain’s civilising mission”.
Sara Forbes Bonetta, god-daughter of Queen Victoria, with her husband James Davies on Sept. 15, 1862
At one point Bonetta was photographed by the society photographer Camille Silvy, an image that is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
The story of Bonetta is a fascinating one that shines light on more uncomfortable sides of colonialism, such as how she was “viewed as a specimen of what a negro woman could become with the right patronage”.
