So true, the 5/Simon dynamic is just *chef's kiss*!

Can I ask what your 5's relationship with Simon was like pre-betrayl? What kind of things did they do together and we're they just friends or was there maybe something there that could have been, in a different life?

Also (because I have to sneak in a question about my other fav ship), what was your 5's relationship like with Peter pre-reveal? And did your 5 see it coming or was she completely blindsided?

I really haven’t talked much about my specific five so thanks for asking! It’s kind of long so I have a read more.

Pre-Betray my Five, Callista, and Simon were besties. They loved going on runs together and Callista cared about Simon quite a bit and vice versa. Callista didn’t have any attraction to Simon romantically or vice versa during early seasons, although their friendship was strong in a way that made them almost seem like platonic soulmates. During the time Callista couldn’t speak, she taught him sign language (she’s American but she knows British sign language) although it didn’t help much because I say that Simon would always grab her wrist while they ran together. It made running a bit awkward and uncomfortable, but it became a habit and it kept Simon from having to worry about Callista being the little crow she was from running off to collect a new trinket and nearly giving him a heart attack when he turns around to see her gone.

They hung out a lot, but usually with some OCs I made just for my world that were people Callista cared about. Callista loved reading as an escape so she babbled to Simon about books a lot, and she is a pretty good cook so cue her dragging Simon into the kitchen to help her with a recipe. And since she is American and lived in the southern region she cooked those kinds of foods which Simon always was skeptical about but tried anyway because she looked so happy to be reminded of home again.

Speaking of her being American, when she regained the ability to talk, it became pretty common for the two of them to make fun of each other’s accent. They teased each other a lot but it was always in good fun.

Basically in those early seasons my Five and Simon were best friends who loved each other platonically but much more than most friends did.

In the seasons with Peter pre-reveal, Callista did feel drawn to him and she trusted him way quicker than she normally would. It confused her, honestly. But it felt nice to be close to someone again in that platonic way, although this time there were romantic notes in there that was the start of an a extremely slow burn… because neither of them actually believe they have feelings for each other until much later. Peter didn’t realize he had romantic feelings for Callista until near the end S7 and Callista didn’t realize she had feelings for him until the gap between S8 and 9, and neither of them even admit it to each other until about 1/3 way through S9, and things are complicated because of other failing relationships they were both in but not sure if they should let them go.

Back to pre-reveal though, Callista has smart and stupid moments. She’s an amazing runner and is quick in coming up with plans and spotting things but she always did not see the reveal coming for two reasons:

1. She can be really fucking stupid and oblivious when it comes to these things.

2. After Simon “died” in S3 finale she refused to believe there was a chance he might be alive because if she gave herself that hope and then never saw him again and he was actually dead it would destroy her. (She was so devastated by Simon’s “death” in S3 she actually stopped talking and only spoke via sign language, which she hadn’t done since she regained her ability to speak in early S2. She was mute during the entire time skip between S3 and 4 and only spoke again because her sister came to Abel and she was so angry because she and her younger sister have major beef that she started speaking just to curse her out.)

Back to the point, there were obvious signs, but Callista was oblivious and in denial so she never saw it coming. Peter even did the same habit of grabbing her wrist while on runs and she would just awkwardly pull away and tell him only one person had that privilege (but Peter still did it out of habit and Callista eventually just let him). Callista tries not to think too much about it.

When Peter admits that he’s Simon, Callista’s brain short-circuited and she nearly had to be dragged to safety from the zombies around them because she just froze. There was an argument later because Callista wasn’t sure how to process all of this, but it ended in tears with Callista’s much shorter frame hugging Peter right enough to hurt as she sobbed “I missed you,” over and over again.

Usual culprits of Christian stories being bad:

A) absolute lack of substance. Either the author themselves doesn't really know the theological ideas they should be writing about, or if they do, they or their publishers prefer to cut them in favor of "reaching a wider audience". The result is so generic and watered down, that offends no one, but also pleases no one. If you pick some of the most famous and classic Christian novels, you will most definitely get the sense that the author had OpinionsTM. I may not agree with Charlotte Brontë's or Anne Brontë's theological ideas, but I most certainly find them in their work, and they put them there without any consideration of who might disagree or get offended. And that makes for engaging material.

B) This doesn't stop the books from being preachy, somehow. They are preachy about absolutely milquetoast stuff like being kind and reading your Bible and accepting Christ as your lord and savior. And this is because so much of it is written half as didactics and half as apologetics: the writer writers to present an instructive or edifying example to other Christians, but also DefendTM Christians and Christianity and show some hypothetical non-Christian reader wrong in their hypothetical negative assumptions about Christians and Christianity. I think one of my favorite things to present this contrast in is cardinal Wiseman's Fabiola vs St. John Henry Newman's Callista. Fabiola is not necessarily bad -it's inspiring and moving at many points- but this heavy didactic-apologetic intent is very, very felt. Whereas Newman's Callista is filled with Newman's own questions about what it means to be a Christian and a Catholic and how the communities and times in which you live influence the way you live your faith, how do they contribute to strengthen it or weaken it, etc, etc.

C) One of the severe consequences of the didactics-apologetics aproach, is the inability to take oneself (and fellow Christians as a whole) lightly. I remember this post that was going around about things that you shouldn't do in representing Catholic orders and Catholics because they are offensive, and it made me think of so many episodes of my life as a Catholic that belong in a comedy. That time it was the bishop's birthday, an old lady suggested having a cake with a picture of his face on top, and pastor commented "and who'll be the first to stab him on the face I wonder". That time I went to sing at the cathedral and there was this random abandoned cardboard cutout of St. John Paul II in the choir loft. That time I rode a van with nuns and a coffin. And the list goes on. Saints lives! We have blessed Carino, who was the murderer of St Peter of Verona. Like, yup, he was an assassin, but then circumstances happened and he ended up at a Dominican convent and liked the life so much he joined. The same order the guy he murdered belonged to. Not the only case. Bad Christian fiction absolutely refuses to admit the funny, the ridiculous, the actually strange and quirky in its Christian characters and their lives -it takes Christians way too seriously because instead of writing about people and their lives, it's writing didactics and apologetics.

The God's not Dead movies are such a case of study of... everything I just said turned up to 11, but I think it illustrates the humor aspect perfectly. It is aware that it needs a relief of tension with some comedy. But it cannot stop itself from being oh so preachy about it. So the humor is all about... a pastor being somewhat pessimistic and not upbeat 100% of the time. This is treated as a little joke, but just in case you are not aware that being a pessimist is wrong and bad, we will put pastor McOptimist to preach you about hope and faith and cheerfulness. That is exhausting.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Giovanni Guareschi's Don Camillo stories (and their excellent classic adaptations with Fernandel) are such beloved stories for those who know them because A) they have a clear idea of what they want to say. Don Camillo is always talking to Christ in the crucifix, and Christ answers. B) Don Camillo is not a perfect model Christian. He gets angry easily, he's vindictive and and a little vain sometimes. Those faults are evident for anyone and have a real impact in his life. They also don't stop him from being passionately dedicated to his vocation as a priest, generous, steady, and even tenderly affectionate sometimes. His struggles, triumphs and defeats as he stumbles through life are endearing, but the comical his faults produce are always around the corner to stop the narrative from being sacharine. C) The context in which Don Camillo lives isn't easy and clear cut either: the mayor of the town, Peppone, and a significant number of inhabitants, are communists. But Don Camillo and Peppone fought the war side by side. Many of these men and women he's known for a long time. He taught some of them music! The more-Catholic-than-the-Pope Miss Christina taught them all to read and make sums and pray! And it makes everything so complicated. And because of that it makes it compelling.

About this week's episode. I just want to give a massive shoot out to the stellar cast!

Izabela Vidovic and Olivia Nikkanen are perfect as young Kara and Alex and form a perfect duo! I love what they bring to the characters, while also being very similar in terms of acting to the original cast.

Elizabeth Helm was a perfect Cat Grant! She made a perfect imitation of Callista Flokart's representation of Cat. Her posture, facial expressions, the way she talked it was all there, and it really felt like seing Cat Grant again!

Peter Sudarso as Kenny Li was just the sweetest! Not just his role but the actor himself. He was perfect as Kara's companion, I love how he portrayed an enthusiast and carring first Superfriend!

And of course special mention to Nicoles Maines and Jesse Rath who were their perfect selves as usual!

It’s kind of long because I have a lot to say, but it’s not all negative. There’s just one thing that’s mentioned in particular I feel the need to elaborate on

While I was wanting to punch Maryam in the face for dismissing Sam’s VERY VALID worry for Peter, I’m happy to know Peter is safe and unharmed.

But if Maryam says shit like that again idk if she secretly knows he’s safe my Five is punching her on sight. Like the amount of times Peter’s safety has been dismissed this season is insane and I’m not here for it.

Also Maryam being a spy 😱. Who would have guessed? It’s not like we’d been all theorizing it since she was introduced or anything. True she’s not a RSB spy but still.

But I don’t trust her bc there is one thing thats very sus. RSB had cameras of places all around the world and yet they somehow have no idea what’s going on in United States? Like you’re telling me they have connections to countries they aren’t even a part of, but being an outpost to America they haven’t been able to contact one (1) military base in the US? Like do you know how many bases there are in the US?

Also like Maryam saying “no one knows what happened in the US”. Like if any place could survive the apocalypse it’s America bc the southern regions have guns and as a born and raised Arkansan I know motherfuckers down here blow shit up for fun. Also hunting is huge here. You’d never find these ppl hiding in camo. Also some 90 year old hillbilly could give you some homemade Moonshine and if that doesn’t make you immune to the zom virus, you can throw it at a zom and it would probably melt it.

And here I am just talking about the south. The Midwest lives in buttfuck middle of nowhere and knows how to can good and grow their own food, the north is cold as fuck and can survive it. New Yorkers would see zoms, shrug and then probably make their way to the subway bc they have to get to work. Also in places like Florida and New Jersey and specially Chicago Illinois, the zombies would be more afraid of the humans than humans afraid of zombies bc it takes a special type of person to live in those areas. I don’t know much about the west coast besides the fact that California is always on fire or having an earthquake so tbh I feel like zombies are like the secondary problem for them.

There is no way they haven’t been able to make contact with America. Also Ernie I love you. He and my Five are clone buddies, or they will be after some character development and Callista trying not to be a hypocrite bc she knows she’s not the same as the person she’s cloned after but it’s hard to have that logic against the clone of the guy who experimented on you and gave you lifelong trauma.

Also there was no Janine this ep so extra points for that. Also Maryam said Janine said it was unlikely that Peter would be hurt, and then it’s revealed that Maryam knew that Peter was picked up by one of her spy friends. This gives the implication that Janine may have known Maryam is a spy. If she did, and she knew Peter was safe and withheld that from us my Five is going feral on her. Like I’m already mad she had us leave him but IF it turns out she knew he was okay and said nothing im not gonna be happy.

Bc Janine knowing stuff and not saying Is why Peter unnecessary cut off his own nose (don’t think I’ve forgotten about that S2S). I haven’t.

Also no Mo and Peter this ep so it also loses points for that.
