I'm seeing a worrying amount of idiots on tumblr dot com push that "Kamala hates trans women" and I am losing my mind at how they are pushing it, constantly, saying she is a proven transmisogynist, despite it being a complete lie and her actively working behind the scenes to help trans women in prison. Is there like, sources that could help debunk this shit because I'm at my wits end as these people scream and cry and vomit trying to get biden to drop out but then are like "eghhhh still don't wanna vote for a transphobic cop..." when she's NEITHER-

any ways the root of the idea she's transphobic comes from one case in 2015. Two inmates in the California State Prison system sued to get GRS, which as inmates would have been covered by the Prison system. It's worth noting here, both women got what they wanted, one was paroled and got the surgery covered by California Medicare while the other serving a life sentence was ultimately covered by the prison system.

Two things are important to bear in mind here, 1. Part of the job of California Attorneys General is to defend the state when it is sued, thats the job, 2. It seems early on in the case Harris was not personally aware of it, about 1,000 lawyers work in the Cali AG's office and so the AG cannot be personally aware of every case, and check this quote from the Lambda Legal lawyer handling the case:

“The California AG’s office shifted its handling of these cases significantly after now-Sen. Harris took over,” Renn said. “Initially there was language in briefing for the state that glaringly misunderstood the medical necessity of transition-related medical care and was patently offensive. But then, there was a dramatic change, which seems to have gone along with important policy shifts.”

in 2019 Harris talked about the case and working after it was settled to change the policy of the California State Prison system

"When that case came up, I had clients, and one of them was the California Department of Corrections. It was their policy. When I learned about what they were doing, behind the scenes, I got them to change the policy," Harris said.

"I commit to you that always in these systems there are going to be these things that these agencies do. And I will commit myself, as I always have, to dealing with it," Harris said.

Any ways Harris can consistently spoken out for and supported Trans people, banned the hateful Trans panic defense when she was AG, in the Senate supported the Equality Act, during her 2020 campaign for President she drew attention to the hate crimes against black trans women while holding herself accountable for the 2015 case. As Vice-President she drew fire voicing support for Dylan Mulvaney during the hellish Bud Light backlash. Her Husband Doug was tapped to host the first ever White House Trans Day of Remembrance

basically you're looking at a great ally who clearly supports trans rights, who was involved in a case, which involved two people who got the surgeries they were looking for paid for by the State of California, close to 10 years ago now, there's evidence that both she moved the case in a better direction when she took over it and also that she changed the polices of the state to before more gender affirming.

A lot of people on mogai Tumblr talk big game with very clearly fake the-whole-bus-clapped stories about the real world concerning acceptance towards mspec monos, Neopronouns and Xenogenders and it's my job as an adult and guiding voice to remind people these experiences may happen but rarely do and you absolutely should not just tell random people you use purr/purrs pronouns or your a bi gaybian or you identify as Chronosian or other things like that because it's really fucking dangerous even in hyper progressive places like new york, cali and Detroit. It can be deadly in many many small towns, including ones in progressive states. Especially dangerous in non accepting states.

I don't say this to burst your bubble or ruin your hopeful world view but many stories of acceptance are fake, even if some are true, most of the community is underage and just cause your teacher may approve of your Soniccharic identity, doesn't mean they won't tell your transphobic parents. It's scary and dangerous out here for trans and gay people rn and I won't be one of the idiots who tell you to run and frolic with your Xenogender pins Infront of increasingly hostile transphobes. I want the younger gen z trans people to survive and I won't lie to you about the reality of the battle we all are staring down concerning project 2025.

Most of the people telling these stories live in progressive states and do not tell you about the failed times or exaggerate the acceptance they supposedly received. I'm telling you from the mouth of someone who grew up in a tiny town in South Ohio with less than 1,000 people, it's still just as dangerous as it was 10 years ago. I still get followed in my home town. I still get stares in my home town. My actual home town, a place I grew up in where people knew me as the gnc dyke for a good while in my last 2 years of school. Do not spread this shit around to everyone. Nex didn't think they would become a victim, Brianna didn't think she would be one of the unlucky ones, plenty of those we've lost did not think they would die in hate crimes. I almost died in two of the hate crimes I've experienced.

You need to be really fucking careful and although I love than Neopronouns and Xenogenders are becoming more accepted by the larger LGBT community, you need to be very very VERY careful about what you do, what you wear and who you tell what because word spreads fast in suburbia and hate spreads faster. You do not want to be wearing a pin the day some white cishet magat decides he's tired of the "pedophiles" and chooses you as the first victim because you were the first he saw. Don't hide who you are but Be. Fucking. Careful.

California Analysis

California is an interesting character. Because he’s supposed to be hypocritical. It’s not bad writing or Ben forgetting who Cali is when he writes the sketches. It’s on purpose. California is hypocritical.

And I think he’s also an unreliable narrator character. He does things to make himself look better/make other people look worse. 

His reactions to other states having “good ideas” is pretty evident of it. Like- he’s trying to convince people that Kentucky or New Mexico or Kansas having a good idea is a rare and unheard of thing. That these states just aren’t “as good” as him. 

I think it’s really interesting how he does this with his friendships. 

Because he does have friends. He states it himself in a sketch (”My gay friend Michael” which I’ll also cover his group vs individual interactions because I think that’s interesting. And plays more into my hypocritical point above)

And- if California did not have friends, nobody would have shown up to his Halloween party. And this isn’t just me saying that- it’s shown in that sketch itself when Washington and Oregon purposefully ignore California calling/inviting them. 

Kentucky was kind to him and offered to go somewhere with California in one sketch. But California heard that it was to “Hillbilly” thing and turned it down because of his own biases.

I think part of why some states aren’t as nice to him is because he’s not as nice to them. Whether they started it and California is just returning it. Or it’s like the Kentucky situation or the way he reacts to things like mentioned above. At this point I think he’s got himself stuck in an endless loop of behavior with the others. And they’d actually need to work to break out of the non-stop nastiness to each other. Because California isn’t as innocent as he likes to act. But the others aren’t as awful as California thinks either

I have a theory that every time he complains that he doesn’t have friends- it’s during an instance when one of his friends did something that he didn’t approve of or that made him upset. And it doesn’t have to be like- they insulted him and that made him upset. It could be like when Austin corrected California (something Cali does to other people a lot- another for the hypocritical side) and California acted like Austin was attacking him. The “I have no friends” is an attempt to guilt people around him. An unreliable narrator type of thing. Victim complex scenario? (Whatever words best describe that. I’ve been leaning a bit toward victim complex because of his reaction in the Austin situation and stuff)

Speaking of Austin and stuff- his actions towards a group versus and individual. Or rather- an idea/concept versus an individual

Because yes, we do seem him being on the pro-LGBT+ side. But also, as we can see in his actions in the Gays Join the Table sketch, he’s still like- a Straight Cis Ally (tm) when it comes to interacting with Dan 1-on-1. Or how he talks about Michael as though he’s Cali’s Token Gay Friend. (He also has a tendency to try and center himself in the conversation. Make it about what he does right.)

He speaks of promoting services to help people. With housing, etc. But Texas has that snow storm the first time. And California’s reaction is “Let him freeze”. Because it’s Texas. A Red state. A “Bad” state. (And I could get into Texas also being a hypocritical character, though he goes about it differently so maybe my next analysis will be him) (Also an analysis on Gov. I think he’s a character that goes through a cycle, and I’ll have to explain that later)

The second time Texas freezes- California is just like creepily obsessed with Austin. And when Utah says “hey, we’re facing a similar issue” California shuts him down. Because California views Austin in a higher light than Utah. In a weird possessive/obsessive way. (Truly- I don’t think he likes Austin for Austin. I think he likes him because he appears to be the “anti-Texas” and California can’t separate his perception from reality. As we can see with again- his reactions to other states doing things he doesn’t expect from them)

The walk in sketch- there’s a few characters I would have thrown things at in that one. And California is at the top of the list. He lacks an understanding of consent in that situation. It’s implied that the person changing is saying that they want him to leave, and he’s ignoring them because “it’s ok, you don’t have to be uncomfortable with your body” which is also kinda missing the point of the whole thing. And this next part will be interpretation- but I feel like if it was a conversation at the table as a hypothetical, in that situation California would be more so on the side of “they said no so listen to them”. (This is more of a hypothetical based on his past behavior around things)

(Also in that Walk in sketch I would probably throw something at Rhode Island for his reaction. Florida for not leaving. Delaware, probably New York. And definitely Utah)

I dunno. Just some thoughts on California. A little analysis on what we see in sketches

 I might try to explore the “Unreliable Narrator” aspect of him in some fics. Maybe conflict it against how some other characters fill the role at times. I’ll add it to my WIP list

There’s many examples they talk about Mike being associated with rainbows a lot which he isn’t. I’d argue Max actually has more association with rainbows than Mike or even the actual two canon gay characters in Will and Robin. Notice too how no one questions Maxs sexuality which I think is to do with the fact she’s girl doesn’t have the same pull as a boy being gay. Rainbows were a big thing in the 80’s and not for lgbt reasons a lot of kids clothes from the 80’s are rainbow patterned. It’s very easy to pull evidence as well when you’re looking for a narrative as humans were programmed to find patterns that fit. I could argue quite easily argue Elmax are endgame based on Els fascination with girls being pretty and Max’s whole tomboy/rainbow vibe.

Now onto Mike and Eleven although Bylers deny this the monologue was actually a very pivotal moment for mileven. When Mike expressed he loves El it triggered her will to fight back against Henry much very like in her first fight with him at the lab. It’s actually a parallel to in both fights she was completely overpowered and on the brink of death before a declaration of love brought her back. The first time being her mothers the second time being Mikes that’s called “pure love” and it’s also showing the classic love vs hate scenario El is fuelled by love Henry is fuelled by hate. The whole argument too of the monologue not working because it didn’t save Max or Hawkins crap holds no validation either. It was two plans colliding together the Hawkins group has no idea what the Cali group were going to do or vice Versa nor did they know El had her powers back. Mikes only focus in the moment was not having El suffocate to death right infront of him which was literally happening right infront of him the monologue worked because it saved El had Mike not spoke both El and Max would be dead and that’s a fact Bylers cannot deny! Also take note of the parallel afterwards too Lucas begging Max to stay with him Mike begging El to wake up (i can list many of ways how Lumax and Mileven parallel to) Mikes words also being what gave El the courage to bring Max back to life.

Interesting. But on your first point, there are quite a few people who headcanon Max as queer and point out her association with rainbows, so that's not exactly true. But I agree rainbows don't necessarily mean anything and I don't think anyone genuinely believes Elmax is endgame.

But yeah, I agree with everything else. The monologue did work and Mike is in love with El, he was telling the truth. Bylers misunderstand the monologue so much and twist it to mean what they want.
