If It Weren’t For The Wind

WC: 1.5K
Summary: Choosing between Matt and your career wasn’t something you thought you’d ever need to do
The light in Matt Rempe's New York apartment was dim, a single lamp casting a weak yellow glow across the room. Outside, the muffled sounds of the city filtered through the windows—honking cabs, distant sirens, the unending hum of people who had places to be. It was a city that never slept, a city that thrived on forward momentum. And right now, it felt like the entire world was moving forward without Matt.
He sat on the edge of the bed, staring at his phone. The text from Y/N was still unread, glowing like a taunt on the screen. He hadn’t opened it yet. He didn’t need to. He knew exactly what it said.
It’s not that she’d hidden the job offer from him. Quite the opposite, in fact. They’d talked about it a few times, in that vague, abstract way that couples talked about things they didn’t want to believe would actually happen. A “What if?” conversation. Something distant, something that felt more like a passing thought than a real possibility.
But now it was real.
Calgary. His hometown.
For two years, Y/N had promised Matt that if they ever offered her the top position there, she wouldn’t take it. She swore it as if it were some sacred bond, something they could cling to like an anchor. She knew how much it meant to him, staying in New York together, growing their life in the city where Matt’s NHL career had finally taken off. New York had become more than just a home—it had become their home.
But promises were fragile, and time had a way of wearing them thin. Y/N knew she’d make that promise, but she knew later she was bound to change her mind.
Matt tossed his phone onto the bed, his chest tightening. He didn’t know what he expected her to do, really. It wasn’t as though he hadn’t seen the signs. The job was everything she’d ever wanted, and Calgary, though it was his home, was also the place where her future was blossoming. The opportunity she’d been offered was once in a lifetime, the kind of job people dreamed about but never thought would actually land in their lap. But it had landed in hers. And now, they were standing at the edge of something that felt irreversible.
He ran his hands through his hair, standing up and pacing the room. His hockey bag was in the corner, half-packed for tomorrow’s game. His whole life was in this city. But the truth was, he couldn’t help but wonder if her life had always been waiting for her somewhere else.
Maybe if the weather had been different, she wouldn’t have gone.
Maybe if the plane never took off.
Maybe if she hadn’t left at sunrise.
But she had left. And she hadn’t looked back.
Y/N stood at the terminal, clutching her boarding pass as if it were a life preserver, the one thing that could keep her from drowning in her own indecision. The airport was quiet, the early morning crowd still thin. She had always liked traveling in the quiet hours, when the world still felt half-asleep. But today, the silence wasn’t peaceful. It felt like the calm before a storm.
She knew Matt didn’t understand. Not fully, anyway. She hadn’t been able to explain it to him because she hadn’t fully understood it herself. But something had shifted inside her the moment she got the offer. A door had opened, and no matter how much she wanted to stay with Matt, to build a life with him in New York, she couldn’t ignore what was on the other side of that door.
Maybe she would have settled down with Matt, dug in some roots in NYC. Maybe she would have found a farmhouse with him someday, somewhere far from the noise and chaos of the city. Maybe they would have grown old together, laughing about how they’d met, how they’d survived all those sleepless nights when his road games kept him away. Maybe if it was different time in a different life, it could have been perfect.
But this wasn’t another life. This was her life, and as much as she wanted to, she couldn’t stay. Not without wondering, forever, what could have been.
“Y/N?”
She startled, turning to see Matt standing at the edge of the terminal. His broad shoulders seemed to take up the entire space, his presence both comforting and suffocating at the same time. How did he even get here? She hadn’t told him she was leaving this early. But of course he’d found out. He always did.
“You weren’t going to tell me, were you?” His voice was low, quiet, as if he was afraid that if he spoke too loud, it would shatter the moment entirely.
She looked down, unable to meet his eyes. “Matt…”
“I thought we had more time,” he said, stepping closer, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his jacket. “You promised me.”
She winced at the word. Promise. As if it was so simple. As if she could just hold on to that promise and everything else would fall into place.
“I know,” she whispered. “I thought I could keep it.”
His eyes, usually so soft when they looked at her, were hard now, filled with something she couldn’t bear to face. Disappointment? Anger? Fear? She didn’t know, and she didn’t want to find out.
“What changed?” he asked, his voice breaking just slightly. “Was it me? Did I—”
“No,” she said quickly, finally looking up at him. “No, Matt, it’s not you. It’s not… It’s just… I don’t know how to explain it.”
“Try.” His jaw clenched, his gaze piercing.
She swallowed hard, searching for the words, but nothing came out right. Everything she wanted to say felt wrong, felt like an excuse. She could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on her, crushing her chest, making it hard to breathe. She loved him. She loved him so much it hurt. But she couldn’t stay.
“I need this,” she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I need to know what’s out there for me.”
“What about us?” His words were sharp, and she could see the hurt in his eyes.
She didn’t have an answer. Not one that would make this any easier. She had always told herself that she could have both—that she could love Matt and still chase her dreams. But now, standing here in this terminal, it felt like she had to choose.
And she had already made her choice.
Maybe it would have been different in a different life. If it weren’t for the wind. If it weren’t for the pull of something beyond the life they had built together. Maybe she would have stayed. But she couldn’t keep living in “maybes.”
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. She looked at him one last time, memorizing the way he looked under the harsh airport lights—the furrow in his brow, the tight set of his lips, the sadness in his eyes. She wanted to freeze this moment, to keep it forever, because she knew that once she walked away, it would never be the same.
But she couldn’t stay. Not now. Not with all the “what ifs” hanging in the air between them.
Matt didn’t say anything else. He just stood there, watching her, as she turned and walked toward the gate.
Each step felt heavier than the last, like the weight of her decision was pulling her down, trying to keep her rooted in place. But she kept walking. She had to.
As the plane took off, she looked out the window, watching as the city shrank below her. She thought of Matt, standing alone in that terminal, and wondered if he would ever forgive her for breaking her promise. Wondered if she could ever forgive herself.
Maybe she would always wonder. Wonder what could have been, what kind of life they could have had together if things had been different. If the timing had been better. If the job offer had never come.
But she knew, deep down, that no matter how much she loved him, she couldn’t keep wondering. Not anymore.
Maybe, in this other life, she would have stayed. But this wasn’t that life. And now, she had to live with the choice she had made.

Note
Matthew Tkachuk and his partner as the perfect couple and babysitters 🙈🙈 like maybe they have slightly older friends or the older couples on the team just know they'd be the perfect parents together but they're not ready so they do a lot of babysitting and are both great with kids!
(okay I honestly know nothing about anyone else on the Panthers roster except the Staal brothers, which.. 😬🫠🥴 no thank u.. so pardon my inclusion of Johnny Hockey and Keith “Ironman / SONK” Yandle instead 😇)
also, cw: slight breeding kink simply bc of who I am as a person
I feel like the switch would’ve flipped for Matthew when they were still back in Calgary and Meredith Gaudreau got pregnant. he watched you stroll through Target picking out clothes, toy, and other gifts for their baby, calling out to him in the aisles and holding them up with the sweetest, softest, frowny look on your face as he chuckled and shook his head. he watched you plan her baby shower and decorate your house in a neutral-toned Noah’s Ark (get it?) theme, watched you dote on her when she arrived and made sure she was comfortable, fed, hydrated. he watched you touch her growing belly (with permission, of course) with the gentlest of hands and “ooh” and “ahh” over the baby kicks you felt from the inside out.
and all the while he was trying to hide the fact that there was a weird, new gnawing in his gut that he just couldn’t ignore.
then, obviously, the deals happened, and both you and the Gaudreaus went your separate ways physically. that provided a welcome distraction from the baby fever for Matthew…
at least for a while. then, baby Gaudreau was born, and you were constantly showing Matthew photos and FaceTime screenshots of the tiniest, sweetest, softest, snuggliest, loviest little girl and fuckkkk that gnawing feeling was back. one day, when you had settled in Sunrise and he was on the golf course with old Tkachuk family friend Keith Yandle, you texted him a screenshot of you making a kissy face at Noa and her grinning back at you on the screen, and he literally groaned. Keith was driving the golf cart and glanced down to figure out the culprit. it took one look at Matthew’s phone to figure it out.
“uh oh… I thought she might’ve sent you a sexy pic but that’s even worse,” he said with a knowing chuckle. “you got it bad, huh?”
Matthew nodded. “and it’s only gotten worse. we have so much time, and we’re not even married yet, but… I dunno man, something about it…”
Keith nodded, too. “I get it. it’s tempting. birth control no longer needed, they’re lookin’ all hot when they’re pregnant, you get a cute little smushy baby. but it’s a lifelong commitment, man.”
Matthew sighs. he knows.
“tell ya what,” Keith suggests. “I got some kids you can babysit. how about you guys come over tonight and you start there?”
Matthew’s heart leaps at the idea, and he texts you to confirm before he enthusiastically agrees.
and in his head, babysitting was supposed to soothe the sting, to pacify (for lack of a better term) the need he couldn’t seem to escape. but watching you do cartwheels across the backyard with Lola and Mila, French braid their hair, film TikTok dances with them, and read them a few chapters of Harry Potter before they fell asleep… melted him. Matthew honestly couldn’t take it anymore.
as soon as you closed the door to the girls’ room after tucking them in for the night, Matthew wrapped his arms around your waist from behind and pulled you flush against his torso, kissing at your neck and jaw, making you giggle at the unexpected embrace. you were about to ask what he was up to when you heard his voice, soft but gravelly in your ear…
“I love watching you with kids. lemme put a baby in you.”
you stopped in your tracks and suddenly, nothing was funny anymore. you turned to face him and could tell that he was absolutely, deathly serious. and Matthew didn’t know exactly how you’d respond to that, but he definitely couldn’t have anticipated the next word out of your mouth to be…
“okay.”
you watched his blue eyes light up like fireworks and relaxed into him as he kissed you fiercely. suddenly you found you were walking backwards, being angled into the nearby guest bedroom where you’d be staying the night so that Keith and Kristyn could stay out late. as he swung the door shut with one foot, lips still covering yours, you realized…
“mm.. mm-mm, mm-mm, no, Matty. you’re not getting me pregnant in Keith’s guest room…”

An air quality alert was extended Tuesday morning to cover the city of Calgary as smoke from wildfires burning across Western Canada has descended on parts of southern Alberta, replacing the bluebird sky with an eerie orange glow.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued the special air quality statement shortly before 8 a.m., hours after Calgarians awoke to a hazy, red sunrise.
According to the agency, the air quality index for the city on Tuesday morning was listed at the top of the scale, at 10+, or "very high risk."
"The air quality is so poor that even those without pre-existing health conditions could experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, especially if you're doing strenuous activity outside," said Sara Hoffman, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.
"It's a potentially really dangerous situation that everyone needs to take seriously." [...]

⭐️ It's a Hockey Night in Pittsburgh! ⭐️
The Penguins (10-12-4, 7th in the Metropolitan) welcome in the 2024 Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers (15-9-1, 2nd in the Atlantic) for the first of three games in the season series between these two. The remaining games will be played down in Sunrise, with one in January and the other at the end of March.
The Penguins are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games against the Panthers. They have not won a game in regulation against Florida since December 2022. They took home an OT win the following month in a 7-6 barnburner, which ended in Kris Letang scoring the GWG in overtime.
🚨 A Peek Over Enemy Lines 🚨
🐱 Florida Panthers 🐱
Just like the Penguins, the Cats are riding a three game win streak as they begin their quick PA roadtrip in Pittsburgh before heading to Philadelphia. After dropping four in a row (WPG, CHI, COL, WSH), the Panthers had no issue picking back up with three dominant wins against the Maple Leafs and the Hurricanes.
With the absence of starting goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Spencer Knight has been confirmed to start in the net tonight. In his last start, which came against the Hurricanes last Saturday, Knight picked up his first shut-out of the season and the fourth of his career.
Just like back in February, the storyline is that forward Sam Reinhart is coming into Pittsburgh as the leading scorer for the Panthers in points and goals, (34P, 18G, 16A). Reinhart is also first in the league for goals. In his last five games, Reinhart has amassed 4 points, with three of them coming from goals.
Captain Aleksander Barkov leads the team in assists with 18, six of which come on the power play.
🏠 Home Team Advantage 🏠
🐧 Pittsburgh Penguins 🐧
The Penguins are in the thick of their schedule, with some major opponents such as the Bruins, Canucks, and now Panthers. They are in the midst of a three game win streak, with their most recent win being a 6-2 blow out at home against the Calgary Flames.
Tristan Jarry is inbetween the pipes tonight. He is looking to win his first three starts this season after capturing wins against the Bruins and Canucks. Jarry is 3-3-1 with 3.88 GA and a .881 SV%
During the game against the Flames, the Penguins racked up three power-play goals. According to AP, the Penguins have goals on the man advantage in six of its last eight games, which is a stark contrast to last year when special teams were at the bottom of the league. The team is also 33-2-1 in their last 36 games with three of more power-play goals. Ironically enough, the last time this happened was a game against Florida in January 2023.
The Penguins are led in points and assists by captain Sidney Crosby (25P, 8G, 17A, 5PPA). The lead goal scorer for the Penguins is Rickard Rakell, who enters the game tonight with goals in three consecutive games. According to Pens PR, only three Swedish-born players have more goals than Rakell's 10 this season. Ahead of him are Jesper Bratt (12G, NJD), Adrian Kempe (12G, LAK), and William Nylander (15G, TOR).
Happy watching everyone, see you all at the end of the first with notes and updates!

Hi!
I’m a university student in Calgary and this is literally just a self indulgent mental break from uni work.
I take pictures of what I think is fun or cool around Calgary and post whenever I remember. Mostly sunsets/sunrises, art, and birds will be featured but I’m also gonna try and get some landscape and transit photos too.
DMs and asks will be closed for the time being, this is purely a blog for me to just photo dump for now.
Hope anyone who finds this blog has as much fun looking through it as I do curating it.

Capturing the Glow: A Guide to a Maternity Photo Shoot in Airdrie
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, a time filled with anticipation, love, and countless memorable moments. One of the best ways to capture this magical period is through a Maternity Photo Shoot Airdrie. If you're in Airdrie, you're in luck. This charming city offers a plethora of stunning locations and talented photographers to help you document your journey into motherhood. Here’s a comprehensive guide to planning a perfect maternity photo shoot in Airdrie.
Tumblr media
Choosing the Right Photographer
Finding the right photographer is crucial to ensure your maternity photos turn out beautifully. Airdrie boasts several skilled photographers who specialize in maternity shoots. Look for a photographer whose style resonates with you. Whether you prefer a natural, candid approach or a more posed and polished look, there’s someone out there who can bring your vision to life. Don't hesitate to ask for portfolios and read reviews to make an informed decision.
Selecting the Perfect Location
Airdrie offers a variety of picturesque locations that can serve as the perfect backdrop for your maternity photos. Here are some top spots to consider:
Nose Creek Park: This park is a local favorite, featuring beautiful greenery, serene water views, and charming walking paths. The natural scenery provides a tranquil and lush background for your photos.
East Lake Regional Park: Known for its scenic lake views and lovely trails, East Lake Regional Park is another excellent choice. The reflections on the water and the vibrant foliage create a serene and captivating setting.
Downtown Airdrie: For a more urban vibe, consider the charming streets of downtown Airdrie. The unique architecture and vibrant street art can add a modern and artistic touch to your maternity photos.
Airdrie's Surrounding Countryside: The outskirts of Airdrie offer stunning open fields, rustic barns, and panoramic views of the Alberta landscape. These rural settings can create a peaceful and timeless atmosphere for your photos.
Planning Your Outfit
Your outfit plays a significant role in how your photos turn out. Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Flowing dresses in soft, neutral colors are a popular choice for maternity shoots as they accentuate your baby bump and add a touch of elegance. If you prefer something more casual, a well-fitted top paired with jeans can also look fantastic. Consider incorporating accessories like flower crowns or scarves to add a personal touch.
Timing is Everything
The timing of your Maternity Photo Shoot Calgary can greatly impact the final result. The best time to schedule your session is between 28 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, your bump is beautifully rounded, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around and pose. Additionally, aim for golden hour – the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset – for the best natural lighting. The soft, warm light during this time can create a magical and dreamy atmosphere in your photos.
