Victoria Cross for Lancaster pilot Squadron Leader Ian Bazalgette – August 1944
Header main image: ‘Beyond Praise’ – Bazalgette’s blazing Lancaster ND811, ‘F2-T’, with only one engine still running, skims the village of Senantes, France, before crashing on 4th August 1944. (Artwork: Len Krenzler)
Eighty years ago this month, in August 1944, an incredible and selfless act of supreme gallantry by Lancaster Pathfinder pilot Squadron Leader Ian Willoughby “Baz” Bazalgette resulted in the subsequent award to him of a posthumous Victoria Cross (VC).
Ian Bazalgette was born in the Canadian city of Calgary in October 1918, to parents of English and Irish background. The family always called him “Will” and in 1927, when he was nine years old, they all moved back to England. When the Second World War began, he was almost 21 and having volunteered for military service he initially served with the Royal Artillery, being commissioned in 1940, before transferring to the RAF Volunteer Reserve. After completing his pilot training, he joined 115 Squadron at Mildenhall in September 1942, to fly the Vickers Wellington twin-engine bomber operationally. In the RAF his nickname became “Baz”.
When he had completed 13 operations flying Wellingtons, Bazalgette and his squadron transitioned to the four-engine Lancaster and he flew a further 15 ‘ops’ against heavily defended targets in Europe, surviving some harrowing experiences, including a crash landing. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), with the citation mentioning his “great courage and determination in the face of the enemy”. When his first operational tour was complete, he was posted as an instructor at No 20 Operational Training Unit, based at Lossiemouth in Scotland. Then in April 1944 he was ‘head hunted’ for the Pathfinder Force and joined 635 Squadron at RAF Downham Market, Norfolk, as a flight commander with promotion to acting squadron leader. He completed a number of Pathfinder target- marking operations in the lead-up to D-Day and afterwards.

This aircraft has the H2S radar dome under the rear fuselage and is fitted with the then secret ‘Village Inn’ radar-directed Airborne Gun Laying Turret (AGLT) equipment for the rear turret. Bazalgette flew Lancaster ED811 ‘F2-T’ on 4th August 1944.
On 4th August 1944, on his 58th operation, Bazalgette was the master bomber for a daylight raid against the V-1 flying-bomb storage caves at Trossy St Maxim, France. He was tasked with marking the target and controlling the Main Force bombing. Nearing the target his Lancaster, ND811 ‘F2-T’, came under heavy anti-aircraft fire; both starboard engines were put out of action and serious fires broke out in the starboard wing and the fuselage. As the deputy master bomber had already been shot down, with the deaths of all those on board, the success of the attack depended on Bazalgette. Knowing this, he pressed onto the target, despite the state of his Lancaster, and marked it accurately.
Sqn Ldr Ian Bazalgette DFC (far left) with his usual 635 Sqn crew (L to R): Geoff Goddard, Ivan Hibbert, Chuck Godfrey, Bob Hurnhall (who was replaced by Vernon Leeder on 4th August 1944), Douglas Cameron and George Turner.
After dropping his markers and bombs, Bazalgette’s crippled Lancaster dived almost out of control and bursts of ‘flak’ hit the nose of the aircraft badly injuring the bomb aimer, Flight Lieutenant Ivan Hibbert, whose right arm was almost torn off. The flight engineer, Sergeant George Turner, and the wireless operator, Flying Officer Charles “Chuck” Godfrey, dragged Hibbert from his position in the nose in a critical condition, carried him to the rest bunk, applied a tourniquet and injected him with morphine. The crew attempted to fight the flames inside the aircraft, but smoke filled the fuselage and the mid-upper gunner, Flight Sergeant Vernon Leeder RAAF, was overcome by fumes. Leeder was not part of Bazalgette’s usual crew, but had replaced Flight Sergeant Hurnhall for this sortie. Then the port inner engine failed and, with only one engine running, altitude could no longer be maintained. Bazalgette ordered those of his crew able to do so to abandon the aircraft, and four of them bailed out from low altitude. All four survived and subsequently evaded capture with the help of the French Resistance. Aware that his bomb aimer and the mid-upper gunner could not bail out and refusing to leave them, Bazalgette attempted to crash-land the burning Lancaster in a last effort to save them. He managed to put the aircraft down in a field near the small French village of Senantes, but moments later the Lancaster exploded and Bazalgette and his two comrades were killed.

In August 1945 Squadron Leader Ian W Bazalgette DFC was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroic sacrifice in not abandoning his two wounded comrades who remained on board. The citation for his VC in the London Gazette included the words, “His heroic sacrifice marked the climax of a long career of operations against the enemy. He always chose the more dangerous and exacting roles. His courage and devotion to duty were beyond praise.”

Who Does the NHL Instagram Account Love? It's not the Flyers. A (shortish) Statistical Analysis (December 1-15, 2023)
(I don't know anything about statistics.)
Recently, as a Flyers fan, I've kind of become sick and tired of seeing the @NHL instagram account NOT post my team. Of course, every fan of any team is going to feel their team is'nt getting enough love online, but I had a feeling that I wasn't just making this up. So I counted every single post so far in the month of December – from the 1st to the 15th – and added up each time the NHL instagram posted each team.
Qualifications for what counted as a post:
It could not be the list of nightly scores or weekly power rankings.
It could not be an official game announcement. Unofficial game announcements, like Connor v Connor graphics, were allowed.
It could not be a trade or coaching change – but signings did count.
If it was a video of a play during a game, the post counted as a tally for the the team with the successful play.
Any sort of list, play-of-game compilations, or fantasy team counted. However, if a team was listed twice in a post, they could still only receive one tally. In this essay I will –
The average number of posts per team was 18.47 and the median was 17.5 out of the 591 posts I counted. It's important to note that because I didn't count other types of posts – official NHL compilation videos with different players, game announcements, scoresheets at the end of every night – that the total number of posts between now and December 1st was probably around 700. I didn't look too closely at that number.
The team with the most points was the Canucks (20-9-1), with an outstanding 39 total posts, 6.6% of the total posts and 11 tallies ahead of second place with 28. Of course, the prevalence of Quinn Hughes and Brock Boeser on league-leading stat sheets, as well as the Hughes Bowl in early December and the recent influx of Luongo posting all helped to bolster this number.
Trailing behind them in the high twenties were the Rangers (20-7-1) with 28, the Oilers (13-13-1) with 27, the Devils (15-11-1), Isles (14-7-8), and Lightning (14-12-5) with 26, and the Avalanche (18-9-2) with a measly 25. All of these teams save for the Islanders had the help of league-leading scorers on their teams, which bolstered them in the compilation-post and fantasy-team standings.
On the opposite hand, trailing in the single digits were the Montreal Canadiens (12-13-4), Seattle Kraken (10-14-7), and yes, the Philadelphia Flyers (16-10-3), with 8, 9, and 9 posts respectively. (That is 4.39% or 4.4% percent of the total posts – these three teams combined for less posts than the Canucks.) The Nashville Predators (17-13-0) and the Calgary Flames (11-14-5) barely scraped into the double digits with 10 posts to their name each. The Flyers and Flames both struggled to even get on the board, and were the last two teams without a post after 3 days, when Carter Hart made a Goalie Save of the Week compilation. The Flames got on the board after 4 days worth of posts with a Noah Hanifin assist against the Avalanche.
Generally, better teams got posted more, and worse teams got posted less, but that wasn't always the case. (Clearly – the San Jose Sharks were posted 22 times! I love you san jose ❤️) Look at the Flyers and the Predators – two teams who have been good surprises this season, but have been neglected by @ NHL. Out of the teams who have been posted the least, the Flyers and the Preds have the best standings. On 12.15.23 the Flyers were at 16-10-3 with a .603 points percentage, and the Preds were at 17-13-0 with a .567 points percentage. Despite these extremely decent and reasonable stats, and the Flyers currently sitting in a playoff spot in the Metro, both these teams were only posted 9 and 10 times in the first half of December – out of 591 posts! That seems unreasonable.
In the first half of December, the Flyers received 3 solo posts for goals from Cam York, Sean Couturier, and Tyson Foerster. The Preds received 4 solo posts for goals from Yakov Trenin, two from Filip Forsberg, and Colton Sissons.
This other one though, that according to my rules, I had to count, pissed me off. These two tiny names counted as 10% of the total December postings for these two teams.
Knowing that this was the kind of post that counted for so many of these teams, this was the kind of post that bolstered the scores of the Oilers and the Canucks and the Devils, makes it nearly all the more egregious that this was the extent that it took to acknowledge the Flyers and the Preds.
Also, I think if I counted the posts that included videos of plays made against the Flyers in the games that the Flyers won, I would go absolutely bananas, despite the fact that, FOR example, Konecny is tied for 8th in goals this season with Pastrnak and Panarin. Konecny, with 16 goals and 24 points so far this season, was posted one time, on a December 5th Play of the Night compilation post with... three Coyotes. Compare this to the two 12.2.23 solo posts celebrating a Pastrnak goal.
Clearly, there's favorites. And it has nothing to do with how well a team is playing. The Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, and San Jose Sharks are sittin pretty in the bottom ten teams in the league but have a combined total of 66 posts. Is it about the engagement each team gets? Maybe people don't interact with Flyers or Preds or Kraken posts as much as the other ones. Is it secretly Gary Bettman, who hates me and the Flyers personally? Does the NHL just not like the Flyers? On another topic – does the amount that these teams are posted correspond with the amount they're posted on other sites, like Twitter or Tumblr?
And this isn't even getting into how approximately half of the posts about the Ducks were about Leo Carlsson, or the Caps were just Ovechkin, or the poor Montreal Canadiens, who are being shunted to the wayside to make room for the Chicago Blackhawks and their 32nd-in-the-league standing and their 17 posts, 16 of which seem to be about Connor Bedard. I didn't record these numbers, but they sure as hell SEEMED like this was the case, and I've learned to trust my gut.
I definitely know what I want to look for and need to figure out how I want to document these stats differently in the second half of December for a more thorough analysis on the types of post each team is receiving. This has been an interesting, if frustrating experiment, and I'm looking forward to part 2. I love you Flyers and I love you hockey, and I... I don't love you, NHL. You can rot.

Today is the 10-year anniversary of the Calgary v Vancouver game when Tortorella tried to get into the Flames locker room 😂
Maybe that's where management got the idea to turn Hughes into a Center, since Bieksa started as a Center in that one 🤣

I’ve seen a lot of people talk about wanting to change the playoff format to 1v8 but haven’t had much luck figuring out what the playoff format is now?
If the pens get the first wildcard spot they play Carolina and the second they play Boston, is that right? Would it would be better to stay in second, then? It seems like they’ve come close with Boston a couple times but get hammered by Carolina every time. 😂
hi anon! sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this. thanks for the question, i like this because there isn't really a right answer, it's a matter of opinion and priorities—of course i happen to think my opinion is the correct one (and sid agrees with me!) :D :D
so the current playoff format is as follows:
each conference has two divisions. the top three teams in each division automatically make the playoffs, followed by the two teams with the next-most points regardless of which division they're in (these are the wildcard teams). what this means is you could have five teams from one division and three from another, and the three teams from one division could all be significantly worse than the teams in the other division, but they're getting in by default because of the setup.
in the first round of the playoffs, the top team in the conference (winner of one of the divisions) plays the second wildcard team (the worse of the two wildcards). the winner of the other division plays the first wildcard team. the second and third team in each division plays each other. the second round is divisional, so for example whoever comes out of the winner of the metro vs their wildcard opponent will play whoever comes out of metro spot 2 and metro spot 3. the third round is the conference finals, and then the stanley cup is the winner of the east vs the winner of the west.
what a lot of people want, and what it actually used to be, is 1v8 format. so instead of each division getting three teams + two more teams, it's just the 1-8 top teams in a conference, with the top-ranked team playing the eighth-ranked team, the second-ranked team playing the seventh-ranked team, and so on.
how does that play out? let's use last year's western conference as an example so we can see the differences:
last spring, the avs won the western conference after the regular season, which means in round one they played wildcard 2 (nashville), and the flames won the pacific division, which means they played wildcard 1 (dallas). minnesota and st louis were 2 and 3 in the central and played each other, and edmonton and los angeles were 2 and 3 in the pacific.
so here were the matchups:
colorado v nashville
calgary v dallas
minnesota v st louis
edmonton v los angeles
in theory, the purpose is to promote divisional rivalries. however, what ends up happening is two very good teams that might have otherwise both gone far and met up in a later round, leading for higher stakes and MORE of a rivalry, end up playing in the first round, and one of them gets knocked out earlier than they maybe should have.
in 1v8, here's what the matchups would have been:
colorado v nashville (1 v 8)
minnesota v dallas (2 v 7)
calgary v los angeles (3 v 6)
st louis v edmonton (4 v 5)
the purpose of 1-8 is to reward teams that achieve in the regular season—matching them up against lower-seeded teams gives them more of a chance to move on, which they've earned for exceptional performance throughout the regular season. it makes the regular season victories mean more because you're fighting for a more favorable opponent in the postseason, and it means two quite good teams have a chance to meet later in the tournament, not right away (i like to use the wild vs the blues last season as an example of this).
i understand why the league tried out this wildcard divisional setup. but, it leaches meaning from the regular season. it doesn't reward elite teams with more favorable matchups unless they literally win their conference. and forcing three minimum from each division can sometimes means teams that are not in the top 8 of their conference make it into the playoffs. some divisions are more competitive than others. that also harms the final product, because it means there are good teams that aren't getting in and not-so-good teams getting in on technicalities.
i wrote this very quickly so i hope it makes sense! if it doesn't please let me know i and i will try to clear up whatever i wrote poorly for you! :)

Someone told me that the reason I chose my team is absolutely ridiculous but I think it’s funny so,
I moved to Canada (bc specifically) end of 2010 but like partway through the school year. Now we’re geographically very close to Calgary (and somewhat to Edmonton) and lots of people here are flames or Oilers fans, specifically these four little bitches in my grade who were assholes to me when I first moved & made fun of my accent, typical fourth grade bs. So here I am just trying to assimilate to Canadian culture by watching hockey but I don’t have a team yet because I don’t know much about any of them. I am nothing if not a petty fucker so I decided “these kids are assholes & support the two Alberta teams, fuck that” and picked the Canucks just because they were the next closest team to me (my one friend at the time was a leafs fan and said “it’s just a lot of pain, don’t pick them” otherwise I might have picked them. Idk, I was 10)
And then obviously the Canucks had a great season that year and I gloated to the rest of those little shits cause my team made the cup finals and theirs hadn’t even made the playoffs 🤭
I’ve picked up a few stray teams since then like the Avs because Byram is from near me so I have mutuals with him & everyone got v excited last year with their cup, and also the Devils cause I went to uni in Halifax and one of my friends knew Nico (through her brother) from his time with the Mooseheads so she’d make me watch devils games with her and now I’ve adopted half of the devils players so they’re stuck with me for life. The Canucks are still my main Hoe though
I love hearing these stories!

RANKING NHL GOAL SONGS !
30. San Jose Sharks - Get Ready For This by 2 Unlimited
this is so incredibly boring. when i went to leafs v. sharks earlier this year it was a great experience, but the goal song just didnt stick out. the sharks fans didnt even do shit when they scored goal until they scored during overtime. its not a good song im sorry it just isnt. p.s fuck the sharks
29. Florida Panthers - Sweetness by Jimmy Eat World
obviously Panthers fans seem to like this but its kinda boring. its not what id like to hear when my team scores. its not something id be screaming to. its kinda sad if im being honest. i will put it above the Sharks out of spite tho. sorry Panthers fans
28. Montreal Canadiens - stupid hey hey song
boooo tomato tomato tomato . HABS YOU SUCK !
27. Washington Capitals - random song accompanied by ambulance noises
makes my head hurt
26. Edmonton Oilers - Hell Yeah by Rev Theory
overwhelming
25. St Louis Blues - song i dont know the name of
take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowdddd
24. Carolina Hurricanes - Raise Up by Petey Pablo
no. it sounds like that song that goes like "welcome to the reddddddd kingdom"
23. Vegas Golden Knights - Vegas Lights by Panic! at the Disco
i dont like Panic! i dont like the song. i dont like the team. and the goal song is drowned out by the crowd chant ("Go Knights Go!")
22. Columbus Blue Jackets - For Those About to Rock by AC/DC / The Whip by Locksley
this one is so strange to me. if youre gonna start with a bangin song like for those about to rock, why change halfway through and mash it up with a song with such a large contrast? its such a big switch up like what??????? i think that the audience participation on this one is nice ("Woah oh oh, oh oh, oh oh ohohoh"). kinda lame ngl
21. Detroit Red Wings - no clue what this is called
eh good enough
20. Phildadephia Flyers - Feel the Shake by Jetboy
its an ehhhh song, but its higher than some of the others one because the Flyers make up with their mid ass goal song with Gritty
19. Winnipeg Jets - Gonna Celebrate by The Phantoms
one mid ass goal song, brought to you by your Winnipeg Jets! i wonder what Jesse from BarDown thinks about this. the title of the song reminds me of the video where its that like nursery rhyme that goes like "weve got to celebrate our differences!"
18. Anaheim Ducks - Bro Hymn by Pennywise
ehhhhh its fine.
17. Colorado Avalanche - Chase the Sun by Planet Fun
its fine. not much to say about it. audience participation is mediocre but its there ("Hey! Hey! Hey!").
16. Dallas Stars - Puck Off by Pantera
wowww so edgy and metal! i guess its fine. the chanting of "Dallas...Stars!" kind of makes it a bit better, but i just cant get behind it. crowd seems happy tho, so i guess thats good.
15. LA Kings - song that supposably has no name
its not bad, its just kinda forgettable... it has nice audience participation ("Hey! Hey! HeyHeyHey!"). songs i think wouldve been better/more memorable: Party in the U.S.A by Miley Cyrus, Valley Girl by Frank Zappa, California Girls by Katy Perry
14. New Jersey Devils - Howl by The Gaslight Anthem
i have a strong dislike for the devils and new jersey but this is an ok song. i cant tell if the crowd is shouting "Here we go!" or "YOU SUCK!"
13, Vancouver Canucks - Aint Talkin Bout Love by Van Halen
i like Van Halen, but do ya know what i like more? Greenday. do you know why Quinn Hughes looks so sad all the time? its because he remembered the Canucks goal song isnt Holiday anymore! bring back Holiday!
12. Tampa Bay Lightning - Goons by Mona
catchy, good crowd chant.
11. Nashville Preadtors - I Like It, I Love It by Tim McGraw / Gold on The Ceiling by The Black Keys
nashville is music city, so i expected something better, but the crowd chant ("YOU SUCK!") is good. i love me a good "YOU SUCK!"
10. Calgary Flames - TNT by AC/DC
its a good song. would make for good crowd chants ("TNT! Hey! Hey! TNT!").
9. New York Islanders AND Minnesota Wild - Crowd Chant by Joe Satriani
come on guys! could you be any more unoriginal? shameful. still a good song.
7. Arizona Coyotes - Howlin For You by The Black Keys
i like it. coyote themed. good audience participation ("da da dada da, da da dada da")
7. New York Rangers - Slaphot by Ray Castoldi
i dont have much to say about it, but its good!
6. Boston Bruins - Kernkraft 400
i actually quite like this one. its not bad at all. its easy for fans to chant the melody, its fun to listen to (haha funny beep boop music), and its a Bruins tradition! as a leafs fan, i am absolutely shaking in my boots, im terrified, i really am. great song.
5. Buffalo Sabres - Let Me Clear My Throat by DJ Kool
i know i was talkin some serious shit about the Sabres earlier tonight but their goal song is great ! it makes for good crowd chants ("here we go now! here we go now!")
4. Ottawa Senators - Song 2 by Blur
i love Song 2, i love Blur, and this is a great goal song. its great to pump the crowd up when a goal is scored and would make for some great crowd chants. ("woo hoo!")
3. Toronto Maple Leafs - You Make My Dreams by Hall + Oates
i may be a bit biased as a leafs fan, but i love this song and its just so great. hearing it is always so nice and makes me feel so good and its just an all around catchy song. its the best sound in the world for a Leafs fan.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins - Jump Around by House of Pain
i love this one !! its just so perfect and its sure to pump up pens fans and non pens fans alike.
Chicago Blackhawks - Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis.
now, do i absolutely hate the Blackhawks? yes. i hope that the Blackhawks association cant sleep at night, i hope everytime they look in the mirror it says "WHORE" in big red lipstick letters because they deserve it. what were they thinking having such an offensive logo and letting dylan strome play for them. i hate dylan strome. their only redeeming quality is their goal song. i LOVE Chelsea Dagger. its so catchy i just have to sing along. its great, it makes for great audience participation and its just a great goal song to pump up the fans!
