full name — Dakota Perry
faceclaim — Madison Iseman
gender & pronouns — Female & She/Her
sexuality — Straight (As far as she knows)
age & birthday —  25 & October 2nd, 2000
Zodiac — Libra ☼ , Pisces ☾, Aries ↑
occupation — Stagehand @ The Stone Pony & Musician
hometown — Lexington, NE
living — Meadowlark Apts.
~Biographical Stuff~
Dakota grew up in Lexington, Nebraska to Caleb and Holly Perry.
Caleb became a Pastor at one of their local churches well before Dakota could clock a first memory. Holly a bible study teacher at the one and only private elementary school in town.
Childhood was made up of weekly church sermons, Wednesday & Sundays a given - TV was allowed, but only select channels and previewed wholly first by Caleb and Holly.
As children Dakota and her older brother Deacon— the golden child of sorts, would spend most the waking hours (outside Catholic school ofc) running a muck around town. Getting hands dirty in the sprawling farm lands until dinner time.
It wasn't until Dakota turned thirteen that she met her BFF India in home room at the only middle school in town (unfortunate for Caleb and Holly, it was public).
The two became inseparable and through their teachings and practices tolerated the fast friendship — India a product of one of the few "liberals" in town.
To say India and her family broadened Dakota's horizons is an understatement, as they grew up together, Dakota was submerged in a new culture and visa versa.
The later years of youth group when she started writing and performing — already knowing how to read music for playing piano for her fathers church all these years — here she discovered poetry and lyricism, guitar and band set up.
At eighteen her parents found out she had sex with her then bf (name so very unimportant lskdmf) and ended up kicking her out of the house, no sex before marriage and all that. So Dakota lived for the rest of the summer with India's family until India was headed to NYU.
Two weeks after and a sense of wearing out her welcome and restlessness on her end Dakota up and left to crash with India in her dorm for two weeks.
When that wasn't obviously sustainable (another wearing of a welcome, especially for newb roommate - though she was cool) Like fate knew when to hit her over her head, Dakota picked a "roadie wanted for traveling band" tag posted on one of the student bulletin boards on the campus.
Two days later she was on the road with Cody and the Drum Eaters.
Life of a roadie was exciting for sure, exhausting, scary, all of the above. That tour lasted a little over half the year taking her along the east coast and down south places she'd never thought possible just a couple weeks prior.
Ofc it's never all rainbows and sunshine — Dakota ended up in a relationship with one of the band members that was much older than her. That relationship alone opened her world yet again until the honeymoon ended the moment the tour did.
A new opportunity arose — woman to woman and few and far between in the roadie world, she landed another touring gig with a bigger band, (think The 1975 sound) High Shoulder.
A little more widespread than Cody's, Dakota got to travel if only even for hours at the time the west coast. In true fashion and maybe the Libra/Pisces combo she fell for the lead singer Adam.
When in middle of nowhere Arizona she got a call telling her of an opening at The Stone Pony in New Jersey — reality was she knew the tour was ending soon and she'd have nothing lined up and she sure wasn't going to go back to Nebraska, New York was out of the question, India now with a handful of roommates all her own— Asbury and the Stone Pony being the iconic venue it was felt right.
to add to the kismet of it all, it happened to the be the small jersey town her cousin on her dad's side, @alex-perry that she always liked was now located. She had to do it.
Dakota's been in Asbury now a year and a half working as a stagehand at The Stone Pony, writing her own music, playing around town at coffee shops and open mic nights. Making ends meet by dog walking with Rover and odd jobs to supplement the days nothing going on at The Stone Pony.
~Random Stuff~
is currently in the midst of learning the drums —it's been the most challenging instrument so far and she can be found at the stone pony on off hours using one of their sets. she has three tattoos, a cross on her middle finger, a matching set on her forearm for her best friend India, and her bf's name Adam on her ribcage (tragic I know)
does dabble in drugs, mostly psychedelics and vapes despite all warnings.
loves drinks with a fizz, almost always is drinking energy drinks and coffee.
hasn't fully caught up with pop culture and media that she missed growing up, always a learning curve. Currently into Glee, Parks and Rec, and Sons of Anarchy - (taking forever, its like going on 4 years now trying to get through) ~Possible Connections~
roommate - always can do roommates, good times.
fellow roadies from the past - or really anyone she'd come across on the road/in the touring world. anything's possible.
someone from NY/with her bestie - wasn't a long stint but she's been back to visit a lot especially now. Someone maybe that lives with her BFF that something went down with.
Nebraska folk - not likely but NEVER KNOW
Church goers - Dakota's got a lot of religious trauma to sort through, she's not fully left the church or the beliefs engrained in her. So someone in that realm perhaps.
an ex of her current bf Adam? Why not, some drama. Someone Adam's cheating with. (He's gaslighter a-hole to the max so) who says he's not doing it to someone else too? Legit down for anything, if there’s ideas toss them out. On dash chem is my favorite and just love winging it too! I’ll fill this all out more as time goes on for sure!

is it weird to "miss" soupmoths?
my time as soupmoths was fun. soup madness was at its height, i had recently gotten into the mechs and tma, i was also super into hermitcraft. i was... really happy? i think? during that era.
i am not the same person i was back then. it was barely a full year ago and yet if i were to change my url from donatelloturtle to soupmoths i would feel like i were wearing a mask made out of the skin of a younger me.
i am still me. the baselines of me are still there. still silly. still autistic (even more so). still having a good time. still into what i was into back then.
what do i feel nostalgic for? if anything, im happier now than i was then. i dont want to return to that. but i look back on that era with fond nostalgia and i just dont remember why.
perhaps its because it spanned such a long time.
my other urls. they all have one, at most two, things associated with them. there was a main profile picture and a main thing id post about.
eyemoths? tma. no icon or color remembered. lasted a couple weeks at most. thestarshipaurora. the mechs. tim pfp, lot of brown. lasted a couple months. casinomoths. lifesteal. the art of csoupie, brown and pink. lasted a month? wlttebane. toh + tdp. caleb and callum icons, lots of yellow and brown. lasted a couple months. sonadowt4t. sonic. shadow pfp, brown and yellow with vague black n red for colors. lasted a couple months?
but soupmoths.... soupmoths was long.
soupmoths lasted 8-ish months, spanned multiple interests (the primary one was hermitcraft), icons, and colors.
perhaps soupmoths' vagueness in what it was is what gives me such a feeling of nostalgia? is it nostalgia?
soupmoths was me, at their core. they still had their fascination with the ocean and dinosaurs they still loved their friends in the same way i do. and yet i still feel like we're so different.
it's just what growing up is like, im aware.
its still just such an odd feeling. its not too dissimilar to how i feel to me prior to figuring out im trans. (hell, even me after finding out im trans. ive been through a lot of change these past few years.) just... less intense?
i suppose it just might because soupmoths was more "solid" than other eras.
eh. i dunno. i dont know shit about the brain

MAJOR spoilers for the C2 finale of Critical Role so read at your own risk of you haven’t caught up!
I have so many feelings regarding Caleb and Essek’s intertwining character arcs I needed to explore, so strap in folks, you’re in for a bit of a ride! (But seriously though, this is like 4000 words long, I basically wrote an essay 😂)
At the start of the campaign, Caleb Widogast was dripping in guilt and self loathing and refused to believe he could ever absolve himself of his sins. Essek Thelyss was a cold, aloof individual who betrayed his people for selfish goals, and their differing yet mirrored narratives have been an absolute delight to watch unfold.
In the beginning Caleb truly hated himself. He shot down any attempt at a compliment, described himself as a ‘disgusting person’, outright rejected the idea that he was worthy of love, and never let the blame shift from him for what he’d done. When Beauregard and Veth/Nott pointed out that he was coerced and manipulated into killing his parents, he reacts in an incredibly visceral way, and I’ve seen several comments likening it to a victim of child abuse who was groomed into believing they were as responsible as their abuser, and I think that’s exactly how it was meant to be read. He doesn’t see himself as a victim, only a murderer, and punishes himself for it every day. We see this in the way he presents himself, dirty and unkempt because in his mind he doesn’t deserve to feel good about himself in any way. Other than Nott/Veth and Beau to a certain degree, he purposefully isolates himself from the rest of the group and it’s a long time until he feels relaxed enough in their company to drop his defences a little.
(Speaking from a purely meta point of view, Liam did an absolutely phenomenal job of showing this through body language and I’d love to see someone do a compilation video of it. He starts off very hunched and guarded, leaning his body away from the closest person to him and avoiding eye contact and physical touch; but by the end stands tall and sure of himself.)
Early on there were a few moments where he had the option to do some pretty dark shit, and I’m sure there’s a possible timeline where he gave into his desire for revenge and really lost his way, but I’m glad he stuck it out and worked through his trauma in the way he did. His PTSD and disassociation when casting with fire was tragic, but over time he was able to work through it thanks to the constant love and support of his friends who kept him from going off at the deep end.
Molly’s death was the catalyst for change in a lot of the party, and Caleb is no exception. On the verge of leaving the group prior to his death, the grief they shared, combined with their frantic attempt to rescue the other half of their party put things in perspective and gradually he learned how to be a person again, to care.
Altering time to save his family had been Caleb’s only goal in life, and so when Essek and by extension, dunamancy was introduced, you could see his eyes light up at the possibilities.
A huge turning point for him is aligned so closely with Essek’s redemption arc which feels quite apt I think. When Essek confesses to his crimes, Caleb delivers a beautifully iconic piece of dialogue where he acknowledges their similarities and how much he himself has changed as a person since meeting the Mighty Nein. (Source - CR wiki)
‘You listen to me. I know what you are talking about. I know. And the difference between you and I is thinner than a razor. I know what it means to have other people complicate your desires and wishes. And I was like you. Was. I know what a fool I have been for years. You didn't account for us. Good. That is life. Shit hits you sideways in life and no one is prepared. No one is ready. These people changed me. These people can change you. You were not born with venom in your veins. You learned it. You learned it. You have a rare opportunity here, Thelyss. One chance to save yourself, and we are offering it.’
This is not the same Caleb we met back in the Nestled Nook inn way back in the first episode. While not yet fulfilled or entirely convinced of his own worth, he knows he’s on the right path. That alone is progress enough, but that he uses his own experiences to help another escape those same chains of guilt says such a lot for his development. When he tells Essek that his ‘venom’ was learned, he’s also talking about himself and his own history of being manipulated and gaslit, with the implication being that it can be un-learned just as efficiently.
Caleb Widogast is selfish no more, or at the very least, doesn’t let his goals undermine anyone else’s anymore. Contrary to what he himself might still think, he is in no way a bad person. He loves fiercely and cannot abide seeing those he cares about in pain.
Early game Essek is what Caleb could have been if he’d rejected his friends and focused solely on his own selfish goal to undo his mistakes. Both are impassive at first and see the Mighty Nein as means to an end...until they get to know them and then their fate is sealed. The Power of Friendship wins once again!
At the beginning Caleb said he wanted to ‘bend reality to my will’ (sic) and in the end he does just that, though not in the way he originally intended. Destroying the T-Dock, and by extension the one thing he’d been building towards from the start, the chance to go back and change time, for me personally was the absolute peak of his journey. I rewatched the scene where Caleb revealed the truth about his parents death today, and it was really jarring to see just how far he’d come since then. It made me oddly proud actually.
I always felt like his plan to save his parents was the one thing holding him back from truly accepting their deaths, which is why the final scene of him in the cemetery with the letters for them hit so hard. He never truly gave up hope that they’d be reunited, but ultimately he realised he was merely postponing the inevitable and never allowing himself to live his own life. While time travel shenanigans would have been incredibly interesting to explore in game, choosing to let the past lie and not go back for them finally allows him to grieve and move on, and perhaps most importantly of all, to forgive himself at last.
I know some people were annoyed by Caleb’s decision in the finale to spend the rest of his life teaching rather than continuing to adventure, but I see it as the natural conclusion to his whole arc and his own personal victory.
He looked Trent Ikithon in the eyes, a man who he’d spent years wanting to kill and run from in equal measure, stripped him of his power and his voice (and ultimately his ability to harm anyone else) and finally spared his life so he had to live with the indignity of his defeat for the rest of his miserable existence. You couldn’t have asked for a more damning rejection of everything he’d been brainwashed into believing as a child. His dismissal of Trent’s position in the Assembly played into that as well. He never really wanted power for the sake of it; he had no desire for politics, he just wanted his family back, and while he didn’t get the one he started with, he made a new one for himself in the end.
As Caduceus once very wisely said:
‘Pain doesn’t make people; it's love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential; it's love that saves them.’
Caleb gets to break the cycle of abuse and teach a new generation of mages the way he should have been, with kindness and respect, and I’m pretty sure he’d have introduced a handsome drow as a guest lecturer from time to time. 😉
Speaking of...
Essek described himself as selfish and as a coward, forever putting his own wants and desires first, yet over the course of his journey with the Nein we see his priorities change drastically.
Having friends gives him people to care about, something he’s never had before, and it changes his outlook on life completely. For me, the first time we really see this is when he joins them for dinner in the Xorhaus and stops levitating. It’s a subtle thing, but meaningful. He explains that it had become an expectation of him, a quirk he’s known for, and so to feel comfortable enough around the Nein to drop that pretence is quite bold I think.
Much later, when he chooses to destroy the mini beacon they discover in Aeor in order to give everyone a long rest before the final confrontation with Lucian, he’s essentially giving up everything he betrayed his people for, just to keep his friends safe. The existence and context of that single artefact could have had an earthshattering impact on the Dynasty’s entire culture, forcing them to reevaluate their entire belief system and attitude to the Luxon, something he’d wanted from the start, something he helped start a war for, but he offered it up as a sacrifice without a second thought.
I’d say that’s a pretty big morality shift, and I’m super interested to see if Matt reveals if his alignment changed in the post campaign Q&A. I have a feeling he set him up as a potential BBEG but the party was like ‘no, you can’t have him, he’s ours now’ and that was the end of that. 😂
I think it says so much about the other characters too, that they befriended this person they barely knew, and when he was revealed to have done such terrible things, their first reaction was to give him comfort and an opportunity to atone. Jester held his hand while he confessed, and afterwards, while they didn’t immediately forgive him, they saw the good in him and wanted him to be better, which ultimately feels like what the entire campaign was about, leaving places (and people) better than they found them. It’s obvious that he’s never really had many friends before and has therefore never had the opportunity to be emotionally open with anyone, so seeing him gradually warm up to the Nein and allow himself to soften around them was really lovely to watch.
(Obviously, from a realistic moral perspective, he still fucked up big time. He’s still a godsdamned war criminal and really should have been put on trial for what he did, but I think from a narrative and personal point of view, his redemption arc was far more satisfying, so I’m glad it happened the way it did. (And not to derail but the rest of the gang have done some pretty horrific stuff as well, though perhaps not quite on the same scale)
He has a few moments towards the end that I absolutely love because they show that beneath the guilt and anguish, there’s an incredibly sweet and sensitive soul in there, just wanting acceptance. His dry jokes which often don’t quite hit, (the ‘I will punish the bakery’ line is such an under-appreciated one 😂) his simple joy at learning to garden in the Blooming Grove, and realising that he’d never been asked what his favourite food was before was actually kind of heartbreaking, because it highlighted how lonely his life must have been until that time. There was a moment pretty early on I think when he cast disguise on the party and Jester asked if he could cast it again to change the look of her outfit a bit and while he seemed to find it amusing, he refused, not wanting to waste a spell on such a frivolous request. Cut to their time in Aeor where he burns a fly spell just so he and Caleb can flirtatiously swoop around each other for a couple of minutes, all the while trying to beat Lucian to the city.
His breakdown when Molly’s resurrection failed really cemented to me how much he’d grown as a character. He never met Molly, his only knowledge of him was secondhand, through the eyes of his friends, but seeing it fail just broke him because he knew how much it hurt them to go through it all over again.
His comment to Caleb about not admitting defeat and wishing he could do more did get me wondering at the time if he was going to try and do something crazy, perhaps sacrificing himself via the Temporal Dock to make amends or somehow forcing another reroll, but I’m glad he didn’t. The conversation following that with Fjord was one of my favourites- he shows him acceptance and belief in his potential for the future, something he’s lacked for a long time, and when Caleb bluntly affirms afterwards that he is indeed an official member of the Mighty Nein, it’s the start of the rest of his life, and something he’s exceptionally grateful for.
It all leads to that final moment in Aeor with Caleb, when, presented with the opportunity to alter time and undo everything, he chooses to accept his decisions and carry the weight of his sins for the rest of his long life. That’s...huge.
He’s essentially choosing to live the rest of his existence as a fugitive, forever on the run, with no guaranteed peace or safety. He chooses to spend his life making up for his deeds, rather than looking for an easy way out.
I think that may have had a big impact on why Caleb ultimately made the same decision, as if Essek had been up for altering his timeline I think he’d have struggled to resist it himself. The conversation they had earlier in Aeor about their priorities and resisting temptation really comes to mind as well.
Now, to the relationship.
It was subtle, and not as ‘in your face’ obvious as the other characters, but I’ve been watching and hoping for a long time and I must say, it feels good to be vindicated.
(And if you have any doubt, both Matt and Liam confirmed on Twitter that their post finale relationship was 100% romantic)
I’d been hoping that Shadowgast would be a canon endgame relationship for a while, so the finale, and the aforementioned T-Dock scene in particular had me quite literally shaking with emotion as I watched live. Here you have two men, both damaged and guilt-stricken in their own ways, who find in each other a kindred spirit and a path to redemption.
They’re both very guarded and closed off people, but Essek in particular has a definite shift in the last arc of the campaign especially when it came to his interactions with Caleb. At the start he was quite aloof and stoic, though charming, and they had an instant connection through their shared love of the arcane, (anyone who couldn’t see them making heart eyes at each other when Essek was describing the different types of magic he could teach Caleb was clearly blind) but by the end he was incredibly open to showing his vulnerabilities and that takes a lot, especially for someone whose primary focus was to stay in control of every aspect of his life. The ‘Caleb, I’m scared’ moment during the Trent fight in particular made my heart ache.
No, we didn’t get a dramatic declaration of love or a cinematic mid-battle kiss, but I’d argue that their relationship was just as, if not more intimate than any of the other main characters were. They understood each other in a way the others didn’t, their shared guilt, feelings of inadequacy and their obsession with magic forged a deep connection from the get-go. Neither of them are big fans of PDA I think, though Caleb is tactile as hell (forehead touches and kisses, oh man, I’m so weak for those 😩👌) and some of their most iconic moments have them putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the other. Essek shaking off his forced guilt trip immediately after the now infamous forehead touch in ep140 was beautifully poetic, as was using his fortune’s favour to pull Caleb out of the rubble moments before. Caleb trying to include him in his Sphere of Invulnerability in the finale and Essek staying close to him the whole fight despite being obviously terrified of Trent was the icing on the cake. It’s clear that they care for each other a great deal; whether by the finale they’d consider it love is up for debate, but we know that’s eventually where it ended up and honestly, I love that. I deeply appreciated the fact Matt and Liam both emphasised that they took their time with their relationship, letting each other heal in their own way before they took the next step. All too often in media, and real life too sadly, a romantic relationship is seen as some kind of quick fix, and that a lover will somehow complete you or make all your problems vanish. They knew this wasn’t the case here, and that made it all the better.
While I would have *loved* to have seen them together as a couple right to the very end, the change in their relationship felt right, if bittersweet. I doubt they ever stopped loving each other, and if anything, choosing to shift to a deep and lifelong friendship over a romance that would cause them both so much pain is one of the kindest things you could do for someone you love. After all, friendship isn’t a downgrade, just another way of experiencing that same love, and it wasn’t as though they broke up and never saw each other again, it was pretty strongly implied that they remained a major feature in each other’s lives, they just changed their label slightly. Caleb would hate to have forced Essek to watch him wither away, and although his eventual passing would hurt Essek regardless, incompatible lifespans being what they are, having a period of time to adjust to it, to give them a buffer between the inevitable heartbreak was actually really sweet.
Their romance was no accident, they knew going in that it had a time limit, that it wasn’t going to be forever for one of them, and the fact they did it anyway says so much. They began their adventure wholeheartedly believing that they were both, in their own way incapable of love, only to later find it with each other. Whether their relationship lasted for a couple of years or multiple decades is irrelevant, what matters is that while it did they had a happy and fulfilled life together.
I know some folk wanted Caleb to use the transmogrification spell on himself so he could live on with Essek as another elf, or make him human instead, but that would have been way out of character for both I think. If they could have backwards engineered one of the rejuvenation stations in Aeor and used it to extend Caleb’s life by a hundred years or so, so he’d have a similar lifespan to Veth, now, I could have seen him possibly doing that, so he could spend more time with his best friend too, but nothing further I think. He longed to be reunited with his parents too much to postpone death unnaturally like that.
That both Caleb and Essek ultimately chose to live with their mistakes and make peace with themselves was incredibly cathartic, and I couldn’t imagine it playing out any better.
The fact Matt has explicitly stated Essek is Demi too means so much to me personally because the latter is a label I’ve been identifying with a lot recently, and it’s so rare for aspec relationships to get any representation! It has honestly given me a lot to think about over the last few days, and I really appreciate it.
To conclude, here’s a bit of shameless self promotion. I wrote this after watching the finale and honestly feel like it sums up my feelings on the nature of their relationship pretty well.
‘A casual hand on a shoulder, a waist, a wrist; a gentle kiss placed on a forehead is common between them now, an intimacy born of trust and mutual affection. Over time it grows, like a fire born of seasoned timber; gradual and steady, no spluttering kindling that flares and sparks, but a slow burn, one which lasts.
Their love is embroidered into every aspect of their lives together. Acts of service, of comfort, of understanding.
Sometimes a kiss leads to more than a kiss, sometimes it doesn’t. Either way they are content.‘
So yeah, I love these two wizard boys so very much and I couldn’t be happier with the conclusion of their stories. ❤️

Review : Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Tumblr media
As a child of the 1980′s, there are certain cultural things that I am almost obligated to be a fan of, and somewhere high on that list are the Bill & Ted movies.  As a fan of the first one, I was over the moon when a sequel was released two years later, but if someone would have told me then that, nearly three decades later, the pair of films would become a trilogy, I would have laughed long and hard.  This sentiment only grew stronger with each passing year that Keanu Reeves became an icon, while Alex Winter (unfortunately) was veering towards the realms of an afterthought.  Then, in 2019, the announcement of Bill & Ted Face the Music went from rumor to greenlit project, and even with the world shutting down, the film still found its way into the hands of moviegoers, answering many of our ‘what if?’ questions about the franchise.
In the year 2020, Bill S. Preston Esquire (Alex Winter) and Theodore ‘Ted’ Logan (Keanu Reeves) are still struggling with the their prophesized task of uniting the world through a Wyld Stallyns song.  Unbeknownst to the duo, their inability to fulfill the prophecy is causing damage in the space time continuum, specifically in the form of a collapse that is displacing people and objects randomly throughout time and space.  At the behest of The Great Leader (Holland Taylor), Kelly (Kristen Schaal), the daughter of Rufus (the late George Carlin), travels back in time to bring Bill & Ted to The Great Leader, who informs them that they have until 7:17 PM that day to write the song before the space time continuum fully collapses.  Unsure of themselves, and scared at the possibilities of losing the Princesses (Erinn Hayes and Jayma Mays), the duo begins travelling throughout their lives in hopes of finding a version of themselves to give them the universe-saving song.  Meanwhile, Bill & Ted’s daughters, Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine), secure Kelly’s time traveling device in hopes of securing the most righteous band they can, but as the legend-filled roster prepares to assist Bill & Ted, all parties find themselves not only rushing to beat the clock, but to avoid Dennis Caleb McCoy (Anthony Carrigan), an android sent by The Great Leader to kill Bill & Ted prior to their failure, should they fail.
For a film that could have easily sat back and played the nostalgia hand, Bill & Ted Face the Music is a surprisingly insightful look into the process of self-fulfillment, unconditional love and finding ways to support your family while achieving your hopes and dreams.  Seeing the Bill & Ted characters in a grown-up capacity, while strange at first, ultimately opens the door for viewer self-reflection as well, especially for those that grew up fans of the original two movies.  While there are echoes of the previous two movies (journeys through time to collect important figures, a pit-stop in hell), these moments are auxiliary to the main focus, which finds Bill & Ted literally attempting to take command of their loves and lives by a symbolic (and literal) examination of all aspects of both.  While the duo are quite literally ‘facing the music’ of fulfilling a universal destiny, they also find themselves equally ‘facing the music’ of how even the most sincere, openly loving people can still leave those close to them unfulfilled and wanting more, which further illustrates the fact that we’re never too old to rediscover ourselves.
The casting callbacks throughout the film are wonderful, with Missy, Mr. Logan, Deacon, the Grim Reaper, The Great One and even Rufus all making appearances throughout the run of the film without succumbing to the trope of fan service.  We are also treated to the original phone booth as well, while simultaneously seeing the improved technology that occupants of the future now use in place of the phone booth, similar to how many of us have evolved from using phone booths and house phones in our modern world.  Putting the educational journey into the hands of Thea and Billie also works beautifully, as this duo takes a journey down the halls of musical prowess rather than historical figures.  Even the joke of Bill & Ted’s musical ability has evolved, with the duo now brave enough to pick up a litany of standard and obscure instruments, covering a wider base of genres than the pure rock we knew them for, and somehow still finding themselves unable to fulfill their assigned destiny.
Production-wise, all of the expected beats are hit, and narratively, the chaos of time travel takes a much bigger placement in the driver’s seat than in previous films.  The real joy comes from seeing Bill & Ted interact with the many different versions of themselves that they encounter, be it run-down alcoholic versions, super-buff prison inmate versions, or even deathbed Bill & Ted, all of whom are given distinct personalities while still fitting into the classic Bill & Ted mold.  Being able to pull so many previous members of the cast back into the story definitely helps as well, as their years of working with one another not only jumps off the screen, but gives the new characters a safe foundation to work with as they integrate themselves into the story.
Despite their previously mentioned day and night career trajectories, seeing Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves working together again is a joy to behold, as their undeniable chemistry is stronger than ever, and any sense of an ego is not visible to the viewer.  For as talented and accomplished as Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine are, it’s fun to see them fall into a sort of female Beavis and Butthead situation, where they can let their guard down and just go along for the incredibly silly ride.  Kristen Schaal is hilarious as always, finding ways to milk her comedic moments without upstaging the stars or hamming things up.  William Sadler also falls right back into his old ways as the Grim Reaper, including my favorite sequence of all where he shows how upset he is for being sued after trying to take the Wyld Stallyns name away from Bill & Ted.  Erinn Hayes and Jayma Mays step out a bit more as the Princesses, even getting a chance to play older versions of themselves at times (albeit it dialogue-free).  Amy Stoch, Hal London Jr. and Beck Bennett also sit right back into their respective characters, while Holland Taylor steps in wonderfully to replace the large void left in George Carlin’s absence.  DazMann Still, Jeremiah Craft, Daniel Dorr and Sharon Gee all meet the task of playing their respective legendary musician roles, while Kid Cudi finds the humor in the task of cameoing as himself.  Appearances by Jillian Bell, Dave Grohl, Anthony Carrigan, Patty Anne Miller and Win Butler round things out, with a few fun faces popping up in the credits as well.
If you’ve ever had an inkling of enjoyment for any of the movies in the Bill & Ted franchise, then Bill & Ted Face the Music was made for you.  It may not win any awards this trophy season, and it certainly won’t reinvent the way that we look at movies, but it will entertain you, and it may even remind you of a simpler, more innocent time that we enjoyed as film fans.

Unpopular PLL Opinions: Episode Edition
Months ago, I made a few posts regarding some of my unpopular opinions on specific PLL scenes. This time, I’m going to address a few overall episodes that I tend to either like or dislike more than most seem to.
1. A is for Answers
Tumblr media
This may be one of my most controversial opinions on a single episode. The season four finale seems to be many fans’ favorite episode of all time, even hailed as the ideal episode, but personally...I can’t say I agree. As satisfying as it was to finally hear Alison’s full story, and get all of those juicy flashbacks, something about it just fell a little flat for me after all of the anticipation and build-up. Aside from the reveal that Jessica pulled her out of the grave, nothing we learned was all that shocking. My biggest issue, though, is that we spent four seasons wondering what Alison did that led to someone wanting to kill her, and this episode was a huge letdown in that regard. It started the trend of paining Ali as an innocent, virginal victim, and it really destroyed the entire mysterious narrative that I’d been intrigued by for so many seasons. Don’t get me wrong, this is definitely a quality episode and still relatively high on my list, I just don’t have the love for it that many fans seem to.
2. How the A Stole Christmas
Tumblr media
On the other hand, the Christmas episode is one that I can’t help but enjoy, whereas most of the fandom seems to have a pretty universal hatred for it. Aside from, of course, that scene, I find it to be fun, cheesy in a good way, but still fairly exciting. Ghost Mona and Alison’s scenes are too much fun, and it was a different kind of episode that we’d never seen before. For me, it provided a nice break from the usual dark and heavy content of the show. It might be silly and cringy at times, but something about it entertains me every time I rewatch.
3. Grave New World
Tumblr media
I’m not quite sure how much of an unpopular opinion this is, but I definitely don’t believe that most fans dislike this episode quite as much as I do. Yes, that ending scene is undoubtedly iconic, but the reveal that Alison is alive would have packed a little more of a punch had it not already been confirmed prior to this episode. And aside from the last several minutes, the episode was filled with cliches and contradictions (who was Alison running from the whole time if no one was actually trying to kill her?), and is more of a promo for Ravenswood than anything else. The few times that I’ve convinced myself to rewatch this one, I find myself skipping all of the irrelevant Caleb and Miranda scenes...which is a good half of the episode.
4. Can You Hear Me Now?
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t particularly see any dislike for this episode within the fandom, but I don’t see much love for it, either - and it’s actually one of my favorites! Up until this point, A’s game had been little more than sending a few taunting text messages here and there. This episode marks the raising of the stakes. After the Liars take matters into their own hands by blocking anonymous texts, A proceeds to break into Spencer’s house, sent Ella a letter about Byron’s affair, send Hanna a message over the radio, and slip photos of Emily kissing Maya into her science book. This is the point where I first realized how intense both the A game and this show was really going to be, and I carry an extra appreciation of this episode for that reason.

Why It Worked: The Prince of Egypt
Tumblr media
Introduction: The Prince of Egypt is a 1998 animated Biblical historic epic directed by Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner and Simon Wells. Produced by Penny Finkelman Cox and Sandra Rabins, with the screenplay written by Phillip LaZebnik and Nicholas Meyer, the film retells the Biblical story of Moses and how he freed the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. The film stars Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sir Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Steve Martin and Martin Short and features music and songs by Hans Zimmer and Stephen Schwartz respectively. Released on December 18, 1998, the film received very positive reviews (scoring an 80% out of 87 critics aggregated on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 7.08/10 average rating), was financially successful (making $218.6 million on a budget of $70 million), won an Academy Award for Best Original Song (When You Believe), spawned a direct-to-video prequel focusing on Joseph (the dream interpreter) and a stage musical at TheaterWorks in California in 2017. Out of the 37 animated films DreamWorks has made, I always viewed The Prince of Egypt as not just my favorite, but also their best film in terms of quality. In this post, I'm going to explain why that is and why we need more films like this.
Tumblr media
The Plot: For those who aren't familiar with the story of Moses, it's a tale about hardship, sacrifice and deliverance. A young Hebrew baby is saved from the slaughter of Hebrew babies ordered by Pharaoh out of fear. That baby is picked up by Pharaoh's wife and is named Moses, for he was pulled out from the Nile river. Moses grows up being Pharaoh's son until he finds out his true heritage and essentially exiles himself in the wilderness. There he meets God in the form of a burning bush who tells him that He has heard the Hebrews suffering and has chosen Moses to free them. 12 plagues and 1 crossing of the Red Sea later, the Hebrews are free and Moses is hailed a hero. While this film stays true to the original text for the most part, it does make a few additions and subtractions so that the film flows naturally at an hour and 40 minutes. I could talk all day about the changes made from the text to the film (such as Moses having a stutter and Mirriam giving Moses to the Queen) but in an instance I wish was more common place when it comes to adaptations, the filmmakers provided an opening statement at the start of the film. "The motion picture you are about to see is an adaptation of the Exodus story. While artistic and historical license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, value and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The Biblical story of Moses can be found in the Book of Exodus." It's clear that the filmmakers had nothing but respect for the material and told a strong story about two brothers going on different paths in life. They also don't shy away from the brutality of the story, while still making it accessible for children. People are whipped, drowned, attacked by locus, and even straight up killed. What makes this film stand out from other Biblical films is that it's animated, but not like that of Disney. Where Disney tends to go for the fantastical and colorful, The Prince of Egypt is more reserved and grounded. The characters move more like humans and are designed more like Egyptian hieroglyphics and paintings than fairy tale illustrations. This grounded approach makes the fantastical stuff all the more powerful. The parting of the Red Sea (with blends 2D and 3D animation perfectly) is still one of the most iconic scenes in animation history. The animation in this film is so unlike anything I've seen before or since and it also helps that the story is well written and is brutally honest with it's depiction of slavery and a tyrant ruler.
Tumblr media
Cast and Characters: The cast they got for this film is excellent. Sure they're celebrities who (at the time) didn't have prior experience in voice acting (with the exceptions of Michelle Pfeiffer, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, Sir Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Steve Martin and Martin Short). That said, in this film they nailed their respective characters. Starting off with our hero, Val Kilmer gives such a nuanced performance as Moses, making him cockey and arrogant at the start and then making him so well spoken and wise by the end. Moses is such a relatable protagonist and has a genuine arc through the film. His brash and fun loving demeanor is in direct contrast to his uptight older stepbrother, Rameses. Speaking of which, before he was Voldemort, Ralph Fiennes gave such an amazing performance as Rameses, who's at the top of my list for the best villain is DreamWorks' animated catalog. The thing about Rameses is before he became a ruthless tyrant, he strived to be just like his father, who he saw as wise, percise and a real king. At the same time he had such a good relationship with his stepbrother, Moses, that he hoped that they'd make Egypt a better place together. That all changed when Moses came back from his self imposed exile and asked him to release the Hebrews in the name of God. Ralph Fiennes showcases the right amount of worry, stubbornness and sadness of this character, and the chemistry he shares with Moses is perfect. Everyone else does a great job voicing their respective characters as well. Michelle Pfeiffer gives Tzipporah such a snarky personality and makes for a good wife to Moses, Sandra Bullock makes Mirriam such a motherly sister, Jeff Goldblum made Aaron as essentially the voice of the cynical people which this film couldn't function without (also Jeff Goldblum is always a win), and Steve Martin and Martin Short work off each other perfectly as Hotep and Huy. Then there's our Lord and Savior Himself, God. In this film, God is portrayed as the all powerful being He is as described in the Bible. He protects His people, He tells Moses exactly what to do and how to do it, He shows mercy and good favor towards the Hebrews, and He does keep His promise in bringing His people out of Egypt. Val Kilmer provides the voice of God and it sounds so majestic and calm, it's like listening to your best friend.
Tumblr media
Songs and Music: There is not a single song in this film that I don't catch myself humming to on a daily basis. That is how powerful these songs are. The opening number, Deliver Us, perfectly captures the oppression of the Hebrews as they are whipped, pushed, and yelled at by the Egyptians. Oh and also babies are slaughtered during this scene, making the song even more powerful. Moses' song, All I Ever Wanted, plays after his encounter with Miriam and Aaron and brilliantly showcases his doubts to his upbringing; right before he's hit with that amazing dream sequence done in the style of Egypt wall paintings. Look at Your Life Through Heaven's Eyes was such an upbeat and fun song that shows you your life has meaning and you should look at it with a more optimistic perspective (through Heaven's eyes, if you will). Playing With The Big Boys is an amazing number, showing the dark mockery of God from Hotep and Huy as well as some impressive visuals (also there's this dope rock cover of the song by Jonathan Young and Caleb Hyles you should really check out: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gqlNY5iX-nA). The 12 plagues are shown via a reprise as All I Ever Wanted and it is genius. The visuals get noticeably darker with each passing plague until all of Egypt is covered in darkness. And Moses and Rameses' duet perfectly captures their opposing viewpoints during this time. Then there's the Oscar winning song, When You Believe. It's the ultimate song of hope, of faith, of belief; it's the song that should be song and heard around the world, especially today when hope and optimism are seen as being ignorant. Also, Hans Zimmer's score for this film is nothing short of magical. The way he uses brass instruments to emphasize God's power is just glorious and the choir is used in the exact place you expect there to be a choir. It's so soothing and majestic, I wish I had the soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Where it Falters: My only gripe with the film is the ending. Not that it's bad, but that, well, it ends. Despite the film promising to bring the Hebrews to the promise land, we never actually go there. I thought they'd get to that in a sequel, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon because DreamWorks Animation swore off 2D animated films after Sinbad tanked and they're not nearly as ambitious now as they were back in the 90s and 2000s. Cosmodore made this really insightful video about how DreamWorks Animation almost went bankrupt twice and why their recent output has been geared more towards families (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dLa7xe5GTWw) but the tl;dr is DreamWorks Animation was 1 more financially disappointing year away from closing up shop completely. Still though, I would love to have seen a sequel to The Prince of Egypt focusing on how Moses lead the people through the wilderness.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: The Prince of Egypt stands as one of the best animated films ever made. With an amazing soundtrack, memorable characters, beautiful animation, and a stellar voice cast, it's one of a select few films I consider a masterpiece. You could argue that it's not accurate to the story told in the Bible (a fact the filmmakers themselves acknowledge), but it does stay true to the spirit of the story and it doesn't go out of it's way to convince nonbelievers that this is truth. As a film on it's own, it's great and I hope it's watched and remembered for generations to come. Thanks so much for reading and I'll see you soon ;)

Caleb, Peter, the Oracle/Himerish and Yan Lin for the ask game.
Alright, after a VERY unexpected hiatus (for which I wholeheartedly apologize), I’m finally back with responses to the ask game I reblogged with the expectation of answering much sooner.
Answers below the cut, with the exception of favorite photo (I just didn’t have the time to search through both comics and cartoon to find the best ones).
Caleb
• favorite thing about them:
I guess the fact that he pulls off Badass Normal pretty well, surrounded by all of these powerful women. He can still hold his own in a fight, and managed to coordinate a successful rebellion in a world long under tyrannical rule. Also, can’t forget the literal dream-guy aspect of his initial comics characterization.
• least favorite thing about them:
On the animated series side, I really dislike the toxic masculinity and sexism fueling his characterization, which was especially prominent in season 1 (and thankfully waned as the series went on). Which I guess is also my problem with him in the comics, except that trait came out of the blue well into his time in the series and served the sole purpose of breaking up his relationship.
• favorite line:
I do like the first romantic scene between Caleb and Cornelia, so I’ll go with his speech there.
• brOTP:
Listen, “D is for Dangerous” is one of my favorite episodes of the animated series, so Caleb and Matt is always a favorite relationship. He also has a fun relationship with the girls in season 1 (when he’s not being all “Ugh, girls”), and I do like his comic partnership with Vathek.
• OTP:
I don’t really ship them actively, but Cornelia and Caleb have a fun dynamic in the animated series, and the initial concept of them in the comics is really sweet.
• nOTP:
I’m not a fan of Elyon/Caleb for a number of reasons, and with the way CxC ended in the comics, I just don’t see there being a good way for them to get back together later on, so I really don’t ship Caleb with anyone after about issue #20.
• random headcanon:
Well, my knee-jerk reaction here is that cartoon-verse Caleb would find one unusual—by his peer group and personal characterization’s standards—hobby and be amazing at it and honestly enjoy it. Like in “Divide and Conquer” we got natural snowboarder Caleb because the sport had a Meridian counterpart, for a hot second he played a guitar on the school roof, and then “D is for Dangerous” was rife with his inability to understand Earth teenager things. So based on all of that, I’m thinking he’d somehow latch onto some activity that’s quiet and leisurely—because the guy needs it, he’s basically been raised in and for battle since conception—but still involves some skill and concentration. Something that can help him take his mind off things but also be productive, allowing him to create something fun and useful.
Basically, this is my roundabout way of saying that I had the mental image of Caleb taking up knitting and being great at it, maybe making the girls shawls and scarves for Guardian business in colder climates (because Kandrakar knows that the uniforms don’t offer optimal coverage). There’s just something comforting about the repetition to stitching, where he can either tune out to everything or focus on something else while his hands still work the needles without interruption. It makes even war rooms for the latest universal threat less of a stressor for him, and oh no I think I’m attached to this concept that started as a stray thought based on one of my own hobbies.
• unpopular opinion:
Mm, maybe just the fact that he’s not my favorite love interest in either media, even when on his best behavior? In terms of ship-related stuff, I most frequently see CxC as the popular canon pairing, and while I’m glad to see the love for them (means that this series overall is getting the love it deserves!), I’m personally just neutral and can’t really muster up any strong feelings. I pretty sure that’s just a ME thing, because many a time I’ve just been chill with major canon pairings, not really caring either way, while I’ll positively be clutching my heart and wanting to cry over my tiny canoe of a minor or even wildly non-canon pairing. So I’m totally down with and supportive of Caleb/CxC fans, even if I don’t feel what they do as potently.
• song i associate with them:
I feel like I use this song for every “enduring fight against evil” situation, but I’m still going to go with “The Good Guys” by the Elms (and of course, I can’t find a YouTube link for it…). I just feel like it captures the weariness of leading a rebellion against an oppressive superpower—especially in the days before the Guardians’ involvement—and the fact that Caleb is just a guy fighting without any powers. “When all you got is a single shot/You do the best job that you can/’Cause it’s a long road for a simple man.”
Peter
• favorite thing about them:
Look, he’s just a really great guy all-around. Best older brother, caring boyfriend, good friend, and the coolest dude who’s simultaneously a complete dork.
• least favorite thing about them:
I’m just going to go with the fact that he really doesn’t have any character in his short time in the animated series except to be a) Taranee’s brother (without really seeing anything with their relationship) and b) Caleb’s short-lived romantic foil for Cornelia.
• favorite line:
Not so much a line as a particular scene that sticks in my head as an iconic Peter moment, and it’s just this one comic image of him balancing on a kitchen chair like it’s a surfboard, excited that Taranee got accepted for the Redstone exchange program because it’s a “surfer’s paradise.” Like he’s super proud of his little sister for her achievements, but he’s also very much a surfer dude dork who’s going to geek out over some choice waves and get yelled at by his mom for standing on the furniture.
• brOTP:
He is the BEST big brother to Taranee, so of course that has to be my top choice.
• OTP:
Peter/Cornelia deserve so much more love than what I’ve given them in the past, they’re precious.
• nOTP:
I don’t really have one, at least not a specific one? PxC is the only thing I know in terms of Peter shipping.
• random headcanon:
In the instance where he finds out about the Guardians, I imagine he’d be like the Team Mom (or Best Boyfriend, in Cornelia’s case). Much like his sister, he’s not going to be pleased with the Council and what they put the Guardians through—really, if you throw Judge Cook in here too the three of them would probably put the entire establishment on trial and win. But in the meantime, until definitive change can be made, Peter devotes his time to making sure the girls are taken care of and maintaining a proper balance between their two lives. He’s probably there with cookies and hot chocolate and fuzzy blankets after every rough mission, letting the Guardians finish the initial debrief before ushering them to a mandatory movie night or something to decompress. Date nights with Cornelia invoke a firm no-Guardian-business clause, where all conversation is on everything but and any lingering concerns are checked at the door, where they can remain for a few hours.
It’s just… this is Peter’s sister and girlfriend and their best friends, and it’s in his nature to be a very chill, caring dude. If pre-New Power Matt was ecstatic about providing support by running interference while the girls are away on mission, then I imagine Peter would be the go-to guy for emotional support after a battle.
• unpopular opinion:
Mmm, just as a stray thought, I guess I’d have liked to see more of him in the animated series? Not sure if that’d be unpopular, but given the fact that CxC have something of a better relationship there than in the comics and Peter was pretty much introduced into that canon for the sole purpose of a love triangle, I thought it might be. So yeah, I’d have liked to see cartoon Peter some more—give me the good brotherly moments with Taranee, and I’d be curious to see a platonic friendship with Cornelia (and maybe even Caleb) assuming endgame CxC.
• song i associate with them:
Because I’m such a cheeseball, we’re going with an era-appropriate selection in “Catch Your Wave” by the Click Five, a song I still unabashedly love nearly 15 years later (and consider criminally underrated compared to the popularity of “Just the Girl”). Chosen partly because of the ‘00s feel and partly because Peter is a surfer, and frankly I think he’d be enough of a cheeseball to sing this one for Cornelia.
The Oracle/Himerish
• favorite thing about them:
I do enjoy that the “Trial of the Oracle” arc humanized him a bit. I feel like it’s not often that you get to see such a higher-power character be brought down a bit and not only reveal their more normal past, but have them return to it for a time. It was an interesting change of perspective, both as a reader and for Himerish himself.
• least favorite thing about them:
Probably everything related to the “these are young teenagers fighting your battles and enduring what will almost certainly be lasting psychological trauma (given the prior generation, where, FYI, one of them killed another and you just kind of locked her away and let two of the distraught survivors be banned from your sky fortress for eternity because they dared question your judgement in expression of their trauma from losing two best friends to this madness), and you’re still going with this, huh, Himerish?” situation. We’re not going to delve into that any more because we will be here for a while.
• favorite line:
Oh, I can’t remember which arc it’s from (the end of Book of Elements, maybe?), but there’s this one sequence where Himerish and Yan Lin are simultaneously (yet separately) getting ready for a celebration and having a bit of fun with it, and Himerish jokingly looks at his reflection and says, “Maybe I’ll get a haircut!” I’m just laughing thinking about it, so we’re going with it.
• brOTP:
I mean, Himerish and Tibor (and Yan Lin) is the ultimate Kandrakar BROTP. Himerish also had a much more human relationship with the Guardians and Orube with the fourth arc, which I appreciated.
• OTP:
Uh, frankly not something I’ve thought of for him, so we’re going to pass.
• nOTP:
Again, not something I’ve considered, but I guess I’d say Oracle ships with the Guardians are not my thing?
• random headcanon:
Oh, he definitely kept that outfit with the baseball hat and the Cupid t-shirt. Both Tibor and Endarno almost had an aneurysm the first time he wore it to a Council meeting.
• unpopular opinion:
Ehn, well I guess I’ll go with the fact that even after Trial of the Oracle he’s still not one of my favorites. The arc definitely humanized him, a fact for which I’m grateful, but I’m still not huge into Kandrakar overall.
• song i associate with them:
You know, for someone who massively associates songs with characters and/or stories, this one was a really tough one. But I was trawling my music library and stumbled on Rascal Flatts’s “I’m Movin’ On” and it just slammed into me.
Now I know I largely don’t recognize the arcs post-Ragorlang, partially because I don’t know them well (having only read them once) and partially because what I do remember was bad, but I still have this lingering image of Himerish’s final page in the series, where he just quietly walks away and disappears from Kandrakar. I don’t remember the context of this in the slightest—like I can’t remember if it was his choice to leave (unlike during Trial of the Oracle) or if he was being called into question again—but I do just remember this silent sendoff, and seeing this song made me think of this scene. From the title alone, it’s very much a bittersweet goodbye kind of song and I’ve loved it for that purpose, which I think it serves perfectly here. Particularly the line “I never dreamed home would end up where I don’t belong”—for so long, Himerish had been synonymous with the position of Oracle and Kandrakar itself, yet as Trial of the Oracle showed us, he led a very different life prior to taking the title. The fact that he’s leaving (presumably by choice, because that’s the way my memory is leaning at the moment) just reads to me as him no longer feeling like he fits within the infinity of Kandrakar—the place that once encompassed the whole of his being—and knowing that it’s time to be moving on.
Yan Lin
• favorite thing about them:
She’s just the ultimate grandma. So very sweet and supportive to her granddaughter and her friends, and always the one to dispense wisdom. Also, she’s one of the few characters—if not the only—where I honestly can’t decide if I love her comic or animated counterpart more. They’re very different characters—comics Yan Lin is traditionally wise and kindhearted, while cartoon Yannie is the kind that will teach you an important lesson and then make some sort of witty comment and/or break out her old tennis racket that she found in the attic—but still so great.
• least favorite thing about them:
Hmm, maybe just how she had to watch one friend go power-mad, another get murdered by the first, and two get exiled forever from Kandrakar for saying this isn’t right, and yet she has no apparent fears or concerns about her granddaughter serving as a Guardian and running the same risks, amongst others? I get that Yan Lin would be proud at the very beginning because by the time the Nerissa arc happens everything was well out of the creators’ hands and thus nothing could be foreshadowed, but you’d still think that there’d be some level of terror once Nerissa awakens.
• favorite line:
Just because it’s in my head, I’m going with the aforementioned tennis racket bit from the cartoon. After she gives Hay Lin the map and Hay Lin questions if it’s because they’ve matured enough in their powers to handle the burden: “Nah, it was in the attic. I couldn’t find it. Found my old tennis racket too. [swings racket] FORE!!!”
• brOTP:
Honestly, I love Yan Lin as the honorary grandma for all of the girls. I’ll also say BROTP to C.h.y.k.n. (pre-everything awful, obviously), and Caleb and Yan Lin’s cartoon relationship, especially in season 1, is pretty fun too.
• OTP:
Well the animated series paired Yan Lin (or at least her Altermere) with Zacharias Lyndon, so I guess I’ll go with that.
• nOTP:
Don’t really have anything specific in mind?
• random headcanon:
Not really a headcanon, but I have to wonder what younger Yan Lin—particularly the animated one—was like with her (presumed) late husband. I mean, the woman was a literal force of nature in her youth and is uniquely wise in her prime, so what was the love story between her and Grandpa Lin? Was it more of an opposites-attract sort of thing—solid bedrock to her whirlwind—or was it more like-to-like?
Given Chen’s overprotectiveness in the animated series, my thought is he was the rational child of two eccentric spirits.
• unpopular opinion:
Granted, I don’t remember these arcs well at all to judge the execution, so this is based more on the concept: I’m not super into the Oracle Yan Lin idea. Not as a testament to her ability to do the job or anything, but it just doesn’t work for me with her character. While she’s had apparent faith in the Council and Himerish all along—even after Nerissa’s betrayal and Cassidy’s murder, the breaking point for both Kadma and Halinor—Yan Lin will always put her granddaughter’s safety first and foremost, as much as she can given the dangers of Guardianship. She’s gone out of her way and behind the Council’s back to get crucial messages to Hay Lin, and even smuggled the key to the Crown of Light to Will while Elyon was being held prisoner under Phobos-as-Endarno’s—AKA the new Oracle—rule. For as much as she outwardly believes in the laws of Kandrakar and the power of the Oracle, Yan Lin is not afraid to quietly go rogue and do what she knows is right.
That last point could arguably be a positive to Oracle Yan Lin—Kandrakar knows that plenty of modifications could be made to Kandrakar’s policies (i.e. the dangers of Guardianship)—except for the fact that Yan Lin’s stealth aid almost always comes as a last-minute, dire situation save. It’s not a preemptive way to diffuse the situation (which you’d think she’d want to do, given how maybe both Nerissa and Cassidy could have been saved if the Council had intervened sooner and with a better plan) when she comes to Hay Lin with the analogy about the oak and the rush, but a survival tip for when Will attacks the girls. Similarly, Yan Lin only gets the fragment of Elyon’s power to Will when she knows Phobos is hot on her tail and will take her out of the picture in mere moments. The fact that she only interferes when desperate times call could speak to her trust in the girls to handle things on their own, but it doesn’t bode as well for future change to the burdens of Guardianship that she could viably make as Oracle. Plus, the fact that her granddaughter is a serving Guardian almost certainly clouds Yan Lin’s actions—would she take similar actions even if it wasn’t Hay Lin’s life on the line?
And we’re going to stop there because that’s getting into different territory than I intended, but the short of it is I’m not into the concept of Oracle Yan Lin and much prefer her as the devoted Council member who’ll still sneak behind the laws of Kandrakar to protect her girls.
• song i associate with them:
First thing that came to mind was “Cassiopeia” by Sara Bareilles. Normally I’d say this is more of a Hay Lin song, just in terms of the star imagery and whimsical sound, but what sold me is the first line: “Come in close now, it’s time to tell a story.” And isn’t that the epitome of Yan Lin’s character! The revelation of the girls’ Guardianship, the Four Dragons—all of them start as stories that Yan Lin tells. So I guess it could still work as a Hay Lin song too, just within the frame of it as a story told by her grandmother.

Oh, look! Beatrice “Tris” Prior was just seen walking down the streets. Is it just me, or does she look like Virginia Gardner? It must be the eyes. I hear she’s nineteen and living in Montfort. She’s known for being intelligent, reckless, and selfless. She has to be from the Divergent Series.
                                                the basics.
Born to the faction Abnegation, Tris found that she didn’t fit in with its standards, or the standards of any other faction in her community. She was considered Divergent, which wasn’t a good thing. Tris chose to go to the faction Dauntless, a group of risk-taking, brave individuals. She met Four, who turned out to be like her.
Tris and Four are forced to flee due to their Divergence, which leads them through a series of trials in which Tris discovers things about the world she lives in and about her family.
                                              relationships.
Caleb Prior - When they were in Abnegation, Tris was always in Caleb’s shadow. When they transferred factions, she got to make a name for herself and be known. Tris hated her brother for transferring to Erudite, though. Despite this hatred, she sacrificed herself for him and told him that she loved him.
Tobias “Four” Eaton - Tris was concerned that Four only wanted her for her body, but over a period of time, she found that that wasn’t true. The two bonded and even found that they love each other. After taking Caleb’s place by going into the lab, she told him to tell Four that she didn’t want to leave him.
Christina - Tris and Christina met on the train leading to Dauntless. During initiation, Tris and Christina stuck together. They’ve had their severe ups and downs, but they always seemed to be by each other’s side when they needed it most.
                                                      other.
This character was aged up to fit into the roleplay. Please include in your app a small backstory that discusses the time between her leaving her story to today. (Tris was 16 in the series, so a few paragraphs that cover the span of 3 years)

“Focus, Yasha”
Prior to episode 120, Yasha was a relatively quiet individual. She was in the back of the group & didn’t really say a lot. She kept her feelings between just herself & two other people. Not sure how to maneuver the love that she harbored for Beau. Having a simple conversation was painfully awkward for them. Five months later, after an epic date with talks of mutual admiration that concluded with “I love you”s, Yasha is making out in hallways, kissing Beau in front of their friends, openly saying babe (baby), & being more open in her thoughts (no matter how off track they are). I like this version of Yasha that Ashley is RPing. The character growth is amazing & some may have wanted it a long time ago, you cannot rush great character development. Yasha is being her best self & pulling Beau right along with her. No matter what happens, these two will be iconic characters in Critical Role. Forever.

Rewatching C2 & realized just how much I miss hearing Beau’s voice. It’s weird to think when C3 starts, there will be 7 new voices & none of them will be Beau saying “Yasha! Are you watching?” Or Yasha saying “Beau.” Or Jester Sending to anyone!

“Before we walk in...I wanted to do this at the end of the last game, and just stop Yasha, because we're in the back.” For some reason this kept playing over and over in my head. I went back and watched the last about 2 & half minutes of ep 119, give or take. Like with some episodes, you can tell that someone is getting ready to do something or say something just from their demeanor beforehand. At around 3:25:47, Marisha gets this look on her face like she is nervous as hell. Then Matt calls it a little bit after that. At 3:26:27, while Sam, Laura, & Talisen are talking about what to do with the Threshold Crest, Marisha is in her own little world. Looking like Matt just pulled the rug out from under her. She isn’t even paying attention to anyone else at the table except for a glance to her right which could be in Ashley’s direction or Talisen’s. Afterwards she says, “Shit. I have so much more I want to do.” The conversation about the crest is still going on, but she is not a part of it. At all. The last thing she says is “Fuck. Okay. Okay. Okay.” Still has nothing to do with the other conversation, but whatever is going on in her head. It’s like she had psyched herself up to do something & is now having to convince herself she didn’t screw up. Something I feel Beau would actually do. It would have been great to have the show go another 30 minutes to hear what Beau had planned, but glad that it happened the next week. IF Beau had talked Yahsa at that moment, the episode probably would have ended right after & we might have had a different follow up episode. But because she didn’t, in 120 we have those amazing moments from their date conversation, to Yasha throwing her sword, & the interaction between Veth with both Beau & Yasha. All of those could have been lost had the ending of 119 been different.
Knowing that Marisha had this all planned out prior to the episode of Talks with Ashley and Laura makes it that much more interesting to me. Or at least when it aired I should say, since we don’t know when the episodes are taped, its hard to really say. But I love how honest both Marisha & Ashley play these characters when it comes to their feelings for each other. Watching from episode 1, you see how taken aback Beau is with Yasha & vice versa, but then their relationship building is this slow burn that lasts almost 114 episodes when Beau reads the letter & learns of Yasha’s feelings. Granted, there are hints here & there that pretty much all but hit Beau over the head, but coming from someone who doesn’t want to misread someone’s intentions, it makes sense that Beau would wait until it was in black & white. I think that is why so many people are into this relationship because it feels so real & natural & not rushed or made to seem insignificant because it is two woman. That is an amazing thing to see play out. I honestly cannot wait until the next episodes & really hope that they have their date sooner than later, without interruption.

A year ago today I watched my first episode of Critical Role. It was Curious Beginnings. Campaign 2 episode 1. I had no idea how a simple show with a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors would change my life. This show literally saved my life & brought me back from the brink & I am very grateful. Through this show, I was able to learn about 8 amazing people who, in a lot of ways were just like me. Socially awkward, nerdy, video game player, & just trying to fit in to life somewhere. Through this show, I got to meet 7 amazing characters who I think about almost everyday in some form or fashion & who I miss getting to see every Thursday. Even though they will never know it, Matt, Travis, Sam, Liam, Taliesin, Laura, Marisha, & Ashley will forever be in my debt. And because of this show, I found this crazy place & this crazy fandom & made a few friends along the way. Thank you Critical Role & all of you, for everything you didn’t know you did.
