⋆✧˚ ༘ i love you, im sorry
pair: caitlin clark x reader
warnings: none!
summary: you’ve been in a secret relationship with caitlin and you’ve finally had enough
hi loves! i don’t know why i wrote this lmao i was feeling angsty but dw there’s a happy ending :) i hope yall enjoy love u!!
‧₊˚ ☁️⋅♡𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
“i wasn’t saying we go public now, cait. i was just asking if you thought we could sometime soon,” you say, tears welling in your eyes.
“god y/n, you know this stresses me out. i don’t know what to tell you, i can’t predict when we’ll go public. i just need time.” she covers her face with her hands, sighing.
you and caitlin had been dating for almost a year now, in private. the two of you had met back at iowa where you’d been a manger for the women’s basketball team and she’d been a player. the plan was to come out together as a couple after she graduated, but once that happened, caitlin was too nervous about the worlds opinion of her. then she said she would include your relationship in her draft speech, but she was too afraid. she was the #1 draft pick of course and more eyes than ever had tuned into her and the wnba. she kept telling you that after her first season, your guys’ secret could be shared. but the more and more you waited, the more and more exhausted you became keeping up with this secret. you started to think you’d have to live this way forever.
“i understand cait, i just hate living this way. i want to show you off and take you out on real dates. you are so important to me and i just hate hiding this part of my life,” you sigh. her face turned red, anger creeping onto it.
“i am the biggest name in the wnba right now, what do you expect me to do? you know i love you, but all eyes are on me and this could ruin my reputation. i’m in the running for rookie of the year, y/n, i need to focus on that.” she exclaims, throwing her arms into a shrug.
you felt a tear fall. this could ruin my reputation, she had said. “oh i’m so sorry that i could ruin your reputation. maybe you should’ve thought of that before asking me to move here and spend my life with you. you say you love me, but you’re a coward. is that how you want to live your life? hiding who you are? you told me we’d go public once we graduated, but that didn’t happen. then draft night and that didn’t happen either. what now? what about what i want? i understand that you’re under the public eye more than ever right now, but i wont sit around and wait forever.” you stand up, making your way toward your shared bedroom.
“where are you going? can we please just talk about this? i promise we’ll go public at the end of the season.” caitlin follows you and sees you packing a bag.
“i’m going to stay with lauren for a bit, i guess i just need some time too.” you say, shoveling clothes into the bag. maybe staying with your sister was best for you right now. you understood caitlin, but that didn’t mean that it didn’t break your heart a little more every time she went back on her word. you knew coming out wasn’t easy and especially when everyone was watching her, but you hated being led on. you loved her so much and couldn’t imagine your life without her, but if she was going to keep you hidden forever then you just couldn’t do it.
“please y/n, don’t go. i love you.” she pleads, grabbing your arm and trying to stop you for walking out the door. you rip your arm away.
“i love you too, but i deserve better than being your secret. i wouldn’t want to ruin your reputation,” you say with a sad smile and walk out the door. you truly loved her more than anything in this world, but when she went back on her word so much it was hard to trust her. you knew how hard this was on her, but it was hard on you too.
a few days after your argument, caitlin had tried to reach out everyday. you told her you needed some space and you’d talk to her when you were ready. caitlin on the other hand was going insane, worrying every second of the day. you were the best thing that had happened to her and she just let you get away like that? no, it wasn’t right. this wasn’t how you ended. caitlin knew that you were beginning to not trust her anymore, she was just so afraid of what everyone else would say. she felt exactly how you felt though. she was exhausted and was suffocating. she hated hiding who she was, and even more than that, she hated hiding you. especially every time she was asked if she was seeing anyone and she had to say no, she was focused on basketball. she hated disappointing you. she knew what she had to do. what she needed to do.
you settled on your sisters couch, laptop in your lap with the fever game on. caitlin was playing lights out, earning her first triple double and the first for a rookie. the fever ended up winning with a huge upset against the new york liberty. you were ecstatic for her, but you still felt a massive pit in your stomach due to your argument. nonetheless, she was still the girl you loved and you had to congratulate her.
you: congrats cait, i’m so proud of you
cait<3: thank you baby, i’m so sorry again. tune in for my post game interview?
you: of course
you turn on her post game interview, her sitting beside her teammate aliyah and her coach. they answered the standard questions, caitlin answering a few more because of her triple double. you can’t help but smile and feel proud of how hard she works. she deserves this. although you’re still upset with her, you can’t help but feel like you may have been a bit selfish. she has worked so hard for this moment and you didn’t want your relationship to become the big headline instead of her talent. sighing, you grab your phone to text her as her interview ends. then you hear her voice.
“wait. uh before we go, i just have something i want to say. i am so grateful for my teammates, coaches, and fans support, but none of this would be possible without the support of my girlfriend. our relationship is the most important thing in my life and i’ve been hiding it because i was scared… but im not scared anymore. i want to show her off and i want everyone to know her like i know her because she is amazing. y/n, if you’re watching this and i really hope you are, i love you and i really hope i see you at home,” she finishes with a smile. then she walks out. the room goes dead silent before the interview ends and the camera shuts off.
you were speechless. you couldn’t believe she just did that. everybody would know about the two of you now. after staring at your screen for what feels like an eternity in shock, you grab your bag and dash out of your sisters apartment. you quickly arrive back at your and caitlin’s apartment, sprinting up the stairs. you rush into the apartment and see caitlin sitting on the couch, hands covering her face. once she hears you open the door, she stands and takes a deep breath.
“cait i… i don’t know what to say. are you okay? im so sorry, i never meant to pressure you! your career is important and we can wait until-“ the words come flying out of your mouth, but she cuts you off. you are undoubtedly happy that you can finally live freely with her, but you still feel some guilt as she walks over to where you’re standing.
“baby just stop. you were right. you didn’t pressure me to do anything. i was a coward and i was miserable keeping us a secret. i love you and im so sorry for saying you would ruin my reputation. you are the best thing that has ever happened to me and i want you and everybody else to know that. the world deserves to know my beautiful girl, just like i do.” she breathes, putting her hands on your shoulders to bring you closer. she engulfs you into her arms and you release a sigh of relief, mumbling an i love you into her neck. as nervous as you were to check social media and see what everyone was saying, the two of you felt the happiest you’d been and you couldn’t wait to share each other with the world.

You're Mine - CC
Tumblr media
Pairing: Caitlin Clark x Reader
Summary: Caitlin's jealousy grows when your attention isn't on her (based on THIS request)
Warnings: mildly suggestive
Word Count: 2.1k
Sweetbans Masterlist
AN: Okay but a jealous CC is something else...
It all started when they were moving into their apartment in Indianapolis.
Caitlin would not typically call herself a jealous person. She was confident enough in herself that jealousy was never a dominate feeling. That comes with being the best on the court. When the two of you started dating, it was the classic trope of her falling first but you falling harder. It was something the two of you would joke about often and even though you are pinned as the one that has fallen harder, you know Caitlin is right there with you.
The two of you met sophomore year of college. You studied to be an athletic trainer and got placed to work with the men's basketball team at Iowa. Due to the both the men's and women's teams playing in the same season there was a lot of overlap with athletes in the trainers nook. That is how you met Caitlin, she would typically be the first one in and one of the last ones to leave. You being you, would be the last one out. Cait would use that to her advantage and would often strike up a conversation as the two of you were finishing up your time there. One thing led to another and after declining a date with her three times, you finally said yes.
Over the course of college, the two of you build a relationship that has you moving to Indiana with Caitlin and her younger brother.
It's the three of you with Cait and Colin's parents as you guys move in. Once everything is in the apartment, everyone is quick to set up the apartment. You are the one directing while everyone is doing the physical movement.
The living room is set when you ask Mr. and Mrs. Clark to unpack the kitchen boxes which really only leaves both bedrooms.
Colin comes up to you with a shy smile and you know what he is about to ask. You have a major soft spot for the youngest sibling.
"Will you help me with my room?" Colin asks. You smile and nod at him the same time Caitlin waves you over to set up your room. Colin heads to his room and you turn to Cait.
"Let me help Colin then I will come in and help, I trust you," you say trusting her to start the set up. You give her a quick peck and head into Colin's room.
Caitlin stands there a little disappointed as she looks at what will be your shared room. She doesn't know where to start, you have the better eye for this stuff. It didn't help that she had pictured the two of you setting up the room together for the past few weeks. It's the first time you are living together and Cait really wanted to share in this moment with you.
Caitlin starts moving stuff around and quickly gets frustrated as she doesn't know what the best set up would be. She throws in the towel and heads into Colin's room to find you and him laughing over some old photo he has of him trying to keep up with Caitlin and Blake.
Caitlin frowns when she finds the room is set up and the two of you are sitting on the floor.
"Oh Cait! This is pure gold!" You say looking at the photos. "You were adorable."
"Were? Aren't I adorable now?" She asks, the comment hitting deeper that she would like to admit.
"Well you are grown now," you say as if it was obvious.
Caitlin doesn't hide her disappointment well.
"Are you guys almost done here?" Caitlin asks. "We need to unpack our room."
"I'll be there in a little," you say, eyes still on the pictures in Colin's hands.
Caitlin doesn't like the feelings that arise in her as she walks back. She swallows them down thinking it is because she is tired and it has been a long day of driving and unpacking. When you finally make your way into your shared room Caitlin feels herself relax. You come in and do exactly what Caitlin needs, telling her where to place things and helping her move the bed. Once everything is where you want it, the two of you fall on your bed.
Cait curls herself around you like a sloth, a common occurrence when the she was missing you or on the sleepy side. You chuckle at your girl.
"Sleepy babe?" You ask. She rubs her face into you, one of your favorite things she does. She only speaks after she is content with her little face rubs.
"Missed you," she says with a sigh which causes you to chuckle.
"We have been together all day," you say as your fingers find her neck, starting to massage her.
She doesn't say anything because it sounds silly in her mind. You are right, the two of you had been together all day, only parting when you helped Colin with his room.
"Why don't you and I do some exploring tomorrow?" You ask. Caitlin smiles and nods rapidly.
"Just you and I?" She asks.
"Just you and I," you say.
The next time Caitlin feels that unknown feeling arise is when she comes home from a particularly hard day at practice. She walks into the apartment in hopes of pulling you into your room for her to be held.
When she enters the apartment it's empty. She calls your name, in hopes that you would magically appear. After no response she sees a note on the kitchen counter that read 'Colin and I went out, we will be back soon. Love you'.
Cait sighs and decides to lay down. She hates the feeling of an empty bed and would much rather have you there with her. She shifts all of your pillows, not caring about keeping the bed made, trying to makeshift something that resembles you. When she fails, Cait gets up and decides to put on a pair of your sweatpants and sweatshirt then climbs back into bed.
When you get home, you see remnants of Caitlin leading up to your bedroom. Her shoes by the door, training bag on the floor next to the kitchen counter with her jacket hanging over the couch.
You smile at her trail and make your way into your room. You peak in to see Caitlin laying in bed, wearing your clothes, and scrolling through her phone. Caitlin doesn't see you enter and jumps a little when she feels the bed dip. Her eyes shoot up to find you crawling in next to her.
She doesn't go directly to you even though that is what she desperately wants. It is also what you expect her to do. You give her a questioning look and throw the pillows off the bed.
Caitlin stays put.
"No cuddles?" You say softly, seeing the tiredness in her eyes. You see the conflict in her eyes as she hesitates but slowly makes her way to her sloth position.
Once Cait is next to you, her body releases the tension she didn't realize she had been holding.
"Do you want to talk about it?" You ask and Caitlin shakes her head no. The only thing she wants right now is to lay there and listen to your heartbeat.
"Okay love, you know I am here if you want to," you say kissing the top of her head.
It isn't until the third time that Caitlin can name what she is feeling as jealousy.
She is sitting next to you on the couch while you and Colin are knee deep in a movie, pausing it every now and again to discuss what was happing and offering opinions. You went from being curled up in Caitlin's side to a foot a space between of the two of you. Caitlin sat there itching and that is when she feels her jealousy reach a peak.
You are in an intense conversation with Colin when Caitlin shoots up from the couch and heads into your room, shutting the door a little harder than she had intended to.
Caitlin is frustrated.
She is frustrated with Colin for taking your time when Caitlin wants it. It is a first for her to have to share you with anyone else, let alone her brother. Whenever Cait wanted to spend time with you, you were already doing something with Colin.
She is frustrated with you, only slightly, but still frustrated at the fact that you are not choosing her.
But Caitlin is mostly frustrated with herself. At no point during your Iowa days was she jealous and she has seen you a lot less due to her schedule. Now she sees you daily and nightly and she hates the feeling that she gets when she sees you bonding with Colin. Caitlin knows there is absolutely no threat in Colin. If anything, she should be thrilled that the two of you are getting along so well.
Caitlin sits on the edge of the bed and puts her head in her hands. She hates this.
She hears the door creak and knows you have entered. She feels you come and stand in front of her.
Caitlin's hands find your waist as her head is now on your stomach. Your hands come to her shoulders. You both don't move, only breathing with one another.
"Talk to me, Caity," you say breaking the silence. Cait lets out a sigh. She hates this.
"It's stupid," Caitlin says as she looks up at you.
"It's not stupid if it has you feeling like this," you say as your hands come to her neck. Your thumbs soothe over her face.
"The transition has been hard, I am not adapting to the league like I want to," she says and you both know that although that is true, it is not what has Caitlin feeling this way.
You look into her eyes and it is as if you can see her walls fall.
"I don't know what it is but seeing you with Colin has been making me feel like you are choosing him over me which I know is dumb but I can't help it. Whenever I want to spend time with you, you are with him and I get this feeling and it just burns inside of me," Caitlin says and you can see her frustration.
You can't help but let a smile creep to your lips.
"Caitlin Clark," you say and she already knows what's coming. "Is my girlfriend jealous?"
Caitlin groans as he head comes to your stomach again, shaking her head.
"Baby," you say bringing her eyes to meet yours again. "It's your little brother, you have no need to be jealous."
"I know!" Caitlin says. "It's just, we haven't had much time for the two of us, you know? Between my practice and Colin..."
You choose to not bring up the fact that the two of you saw each other less while you were at Iowa and lean down to kiss your girl.
Her hands grip your waist as she pulls you to straddle her waist.
She breaks the kiss and buries her face in your neck.
"How about we have a code word," you say and Caitlin perks up.
"What kind of code word?" She says.
"One that allows us to show each other that we need some alone time with one another," you say.
Caitlin smiles, "Okay, I like that."
"Any ideas of what it could be?" You ask. Caitlin smiles.
"How about buns?" Caitlin says as her hands squeeze your butt.
"Cait!" You squeal.
"It's buns," she says, wrapping her arms around you and laying both of you on the bed.
You roll your eyes but accept.
"Fine," you say as you look her in the eyes. "You know, jealous Caitlin is kind of hot," you says as you see Caitlin's pupils grow dark.
"Yeah?" She says as she licks her lips. You nod and lean in.
"To bad I have a movie to finish," you say sitting up.
Caitlin looks at you like you are crazy.
"You are seriously going to to choose watching a movie with my brother over having sex with me," Cait says in disbelief.
You make your way to the door.
"Yes." You say without a hitch. "Because I know, the longer I make you wait, the more rewarding it is for both of us."
You walk out and you hear Caitlin groan.
AN: I may or may not be doing a prequel to this with the 3 times you declined a date with Caitlin and the time your finally do... I am a fan of the concept. Let me know if you are interested in that. And as always, thank you for your love and support 🤍

Caitlin Clark X Reader
Courtside Secrets
Tumblr media
The fever game is intense and the energy in the arena is magnified. You’re in your usual spot, sitting just a few rows behind the bench. Cheering loudly every time your girl makes an amazing play. She’s in her element playing with a confidence that’s impossible to ignore, and you can feel the pride in your chest. But your excitement simmers every time you feel another gaze in your direction. It happens more often than you like to admit…
Tonight is no different and just before halftime a guy a few seats down leans your way, giving you a casual friendly smile that’s a little too comfortable.
“You’re always here, huh?” he says raising his voice to be heard over the crowd. “You must be a big fan.”
You nod politely, sending him a small smile. “Yeah, I guess you could say that.”
“Well, maybe you could show me around sometime. I don’t know many people who are this dedicated to the game… I kinda like that.” he says, his eyes checking you out as he watches you.
Out of the corner of your eye, you catch Caitlin glancing over. She’s usually focused and unbothered by anything off the court, but tonight her gaze stays on you for a moment too long and her eyes narrowing as she takes in the guy’s obvious interest. You see the way her lips press into a hard line before she pulls her gaze away, channeling her frustration into the game.
When the second half starts Caitlin’s intensity has somehow turned up even more. She’s putting on a show driving to the basket with an aggression that makes it clear she’s got something to prove. She sinks a lay up and for a brief moment her eyes lock with you, the fire in her gaze unmistakable. It’s as if each point, each block, is a silent message to everyone else in the arena telling them exactly who you’re here for.
If the extra intensity was supposed to discourage people….it’s not working. During a timeout a woman a few rows down catches your eye and walks over, flashing you an excited smile.
“You must be her lucky charm or something” she says nodding toward Cait, who is breathing hard…her focus on the court. “I see you at every game. She really knows how to put on a show, doesn’t she?”
You nod, giving her a polite smile. “Yeah, she’s amazing.”
The woman tilts her head and eyes sparkling with interest. “Maybe after the game, you could show me around the area? It’s my first time in town… I could buy you a drink.”
You hesitate trying to think of a polite way to brush her off without giving away too much. You’re here for Caitlin of course…and part of you wants to make it clear, to shut down any hint of interest. But you both agreed that keeping things low key was the best way to protect her during this rookie season. So instead, you kindly thank the woman and turn back to the game.
Still the moment doesn’t go unnoticed by Cait. You see her jaw tighten from where she’s standing and when she returns to the court, her frustration is there. She’s relentless in every play almost as if she’s trying to make a point to every single person who thinks they can just walk up to you. She scores again and again…barely celebrating with her team, her eyes returning to you between plays, her frustration clear in every look she shoots your way.
When the game finally ends and the crowd begins to dwindle down…you linger in the seats, waiting for her. But before you can move, another guy (someone who’s clearly noticed you are in regular attendance at Caitlin’s games) approaches with a confident grin.
“Hey” he says, offering his hand. “I’ve seen you around here a lot. Huge Clark fan, right? Maybe we could link up and go to a game together?”
The idea that anyone else could think you’re free…that they have a chance to steal even a moment of your attention, feels almost laughable. But you’re still stuck unsure of how to respond without making things complicated for Caitlin. Before you can even respond, you feel a hand slide around your waist…warm and unmistakable.
“Sorry, we already have plans” Caitlin says her voice smooth but her grip is firm as she shoots the guy a look that would send anyone backing away. He mumbles a quick apology and disappears into the crowd.
Caitlin turns to you her face a mix of irritation and something deeper, almost raw vulnerability hidden behind her jealousy. “We need to go” she says her tone low with unspoken frustration. She doesn’t wait for a response, simply intertwining her fingers with yours and leading you out through a side exit into a quiet hallway away from the crowd.
The silence stretches and it’s heavy, until she finally lets out a sigh running a hand through her hair. “Do you have any idea how hard it is to watch them hit on you? To see them trying to make plans with you, thinking they actually have a shot?”
You reach for her other hand, squeezing gently. “Baby, i’m only here for you. I don’t flirt back…I don’t even encourage them. You know that.”
She meets your gaze, her frustration clear but her tone softening. “Then why don’t you just shut them down? Tell them you’re taken… tell them you’re with me.”
You glance around remembering all the conversations you’ve had, all the times you both agreed to keep things low key, especially during her rookie year. “Because we agreed this was for the best…for your career. We didn’t want anyone making a mess of things and taking away what’s ours, remember?”
She lets out a frustrated sigh looking down at your hands, her thumb rubbing gentle circles against your skin as she contemplates with her emotions. “I know…but watching them act like you’re free, like they can just take you out..it drives me insane.”
Her grip on your hands tightens, her gaze intense as she continues. “You’re mine Y/N and I hate that I can’t just make it clear to everyone. I can’t sit there and pretend it doesn’t matter when all I want to do is tell the whole arena you’re with me.”
You step closer running your free hand gently up her arm until you’re holding her face, forcing her to meet your eyes. “I know it’s hard baby, but it’s only temporary. After this season we’ll tell everyone…we’ll let the whole world know. But for now we know I’m yours, whether anyone else knows it or not.”
She closes her eyes leaning into your touch, letting out a soft sigh as if she’s finally letting go of some of the tension that’s been building up all night. “It’s just hard” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t want anyone else thinking they have even a chance…it pisses me off.”
“Babe, no one else is even close” you assure her, your voice steady. “You’re the only one I’m here for, Cait. I don’t care what anyone else thinks.”
She pulls you closer her arms wrapping around you tightly as she rests her forehead against yours. For a moment it’s just the two of you, wrapped up in the quiet. Caitlin’s jealousy, her protectiveness is something you’re used to seeing. You know that every possessive look, every intense glare is her way of showing how much you mean to her.
“You know what, baby?” she murmurs, her lips brushing against your forehead. “Once the season’s over, I’m telling everyone. I’m done watching from the sidelines while everyone else thinks they can get close to you.”
You smile, your heart swelling at the fierce determination in her voice. “Then it’s a deal, sweetness. Once the season’s over, we don’t have to hide anymore.”
She pulls back, just enough to look into your eyes…her expression soft but her gaze showing the same intensity. “Until then, I’ll be counting down the days.” she says softly, her voice thick with promise.

alanna kennedy, “I always preferred macca anyway”, tillies night out at a bar
competitive streak II a.kennedy
"everyone is going to give us shit for being late!" your girlfriend groaned in annoyance, checking her watch for the tenth time as the uber zoomed through the streets of manchester.
"lani are we talking about the same girls? the girls who are late for movie nights when we're all in the same hotel?" you laughed in amusement, squeezing her leg reassuringly.
"we wouldn't be late if you hadn't taken a hundred hours to try on every single piece of clothing you own." alanna grunted with a huff, thumbs flying against her phone screen.
when she felt your eyes burn into her head she looked up and met your unimpressed glare. "i mean but you look just so gorgeous that its worth it babe. so so gorgeous!" alanna attempted to fix things, smiling charmingly as you only hummed.
"mm thats what i thought you said." you warned as she grinned and kissed your cheek a few times, the uber nearing the restaurant you were meeting a handful of your national teammates at.
by some scheduling miracle a large group of them were all down in manchester with games this weekend allowing for the impromptu meet up. "el is jealous." you chuckled showing your girlfriend the annoyed selfie from your best friend who was living and playing in france.
"film this." alanna tapped your knee as you chuckled but clicked record. "serves you right for living in france carpenter, fuck you and i hope the fomo eats you up!" alanna flipped off the camera as you laughed and ended it, sending the snapchat to the blonde and tucking your phone back in your bag as you arrived.
"thanks mate." your girlfriend smiled appreciatively, sliding out of the car first before holding the door open and a hand out to help you up which you took.
"i've changed my mind, looking drop dead gorgeous or not if they give us shit for being late i will be throwing you under the bus."
~
"alright, pair up and lets get a tourney going!" sam clapped her hands together eagerly as you all hovered by one of the pool tables in the sports bar you'd all moved onto after dinner, losing a few of the girls to their beds along the way there was only six of you still standing.
"not a chance babe!" your girlfriend laughed grabbing caitlins arm as you tried to pair up with her and made a face of shock. "lani!" you huffed in offence as the blonde shook her head firmly.
"i'd just like to win baby, nothing personal." the taller girl winked as you sent her a scowl and someone else drew you into their side. "such a shame you won't be winning then. i'll be taking your girl and the trophy!" mackenzie grinned with her arm slung over your shoulder.
"with her hand eye coordination skills? you can have her." alanna dismissed with a shrug as your mouth formed a small o of shock and even caitlin winced at her best friends words. "you've never even seen me play kennedy." you reminded with a roll of your eyes.
"nah but i do live with you babe, and theres a reason i'm on an undefeated streak at game night. so get ready to lose!" the blonde smirked cockily as you scoffed again.
"hope you're hungry lanz, cause you'll be eating your words soon!" macca swooped in with a grin, guiding you away as you sent your girlfriend a mean glare over your shoulder.
"hope your couch is comfortable tonight lani." cait sighed and patted the taller girls back who rolled her eyes and pushed her away, sam and steph teaming up to play against the two of them for the first game.
you watched on with a silently smug smile at the range of shocked expressions which rocked your girlfriends features as you proved your worth, mackenzie grinning with delight as the pair of you won game after game.
"no way! you bumped the fucking table." alanna scowled as you sunk two balls in one shot, blowing on the top of your cue like a smoking gun before lining up and sinking another ball.
"just call it now! you and cait haven't won a single game lani." sam laughed, she and steph having beat them but no one was yet to beat you and mackenzie.
"nah fuck this, they're cheating somehow!" the blonde huffed dropping her stick onto the table as you sunk a further two balls, winning the game, and storming off to the bar.
"good news! you don't need to get me a birthday present this year, because the look on her face just then...priceless." mackenzie kissed the tips of her fingers as you laughed and pushed her lightly.
"better go do some damage control, hey cait take my place. you might even win a game!" you teased as your friend smacked you lightly and took the cue in your hands, sam setting up the balls for a new game.
it took a few minutes but you eventually located the defender who was leaning against the balcony of the empty smokers area, scowling out into the chilly night air making you smile.
"so is this where the losers hang out then?" you teased appearing beside her as she rolled her eyes and refused to look at you, crossing her arms a little tighter with a huff.
"you know if you'd have just paired up with me like i wanted, you'd have avoided all this horrid horrid humiliation." you knocked your shoulder into her, looking up at her with an amused smile as she groaned.
"don't remind me, should have known cait would be fucking useless." your girlfriend grumbled, flicking you a frown and huffing again before her eyes returned to the skyline. "i'm sure she's thinking the same babe, you sunk what maybe...two balls? and they weren't even for your team." you laughed as alanna groaned again.
"go gloat somewhere else, cockiness doesn't suit you."
"well are you going to be this pouty and moody all night? because i think i deserve a reward for playing so well." your tone shifted as the defenders eyes snapped toward you, seeing the familiar smile tugging at your lips.
"you just want to ditch them?" she questioned a little in surprise as your own eyebrow raised at the unexpected reaction of her not jumping at the opportunity like she normally would.
"no its fine, we can just go back inside and play a few more rounds. i mean i always preferred macca anyway." you smirked as you started to back up toward the door and her face hardened.
you grinned in victory as she surged toward you, taking your hand and practically dragging you toward the exit, calling out a goodbye over her shoulder and ignoring the shouts of protest from your friends in the distance.
"alanna!" you laughed as the blonde called an uber and promptly shoved you against the wall outside the bar, looming over you with a wolfish grin, leaning down so her lips ghosted you and ignoring the ping of her phone that the uber had arrived.
"think i've got a better idea of what i'd like a few rounds of tonight babe."

caitlin clark x reader where the reader is very feminine and people don’t realize that shes 💅
She likes girls . CC
pairing: caitlin clark x reader
synopsis: although you’re a raging gay, you don’t typically look the part. if you had a nickel for every time you and caitlin got mistaken for beings besties or sisters, you’d be rich
A/N: thought this would be a cute little blurb, so anon, if you want me to edit this and make it longer, please message me :)
༶•┈┈୨♡୧┈┈•༶
“i don’t know maybe i’m doing something wrong?” you asked caitlin, legs draped over her lap. it was a sunday afternoon spent on the couch, relaxing after brunch with her family.
“baby” she patted your leg “you’re not doing anything wrong!”
“then why do people not take us seriously?” you were incredibly frustrated “if someone treats us like we’re best friends one more time i’m going to lose it”
it happened often, definitely more than you wished. you would be mistaken as caitlin’s sister or her best friend constantly. at first it just started when you started dating publicly. you’d receive comments like “you and your friend have a nice day!” or “she’s a good friend, keep that one around!”. it was sweet at first, but then cait introduced you to her team. they thought she was kidding when she announced you as her girlfriend. it wouldn’t necessarily have been a big deal, but it hurt your feelings that they didn’t genuinely believe that caitlin would date you. even when you met her family, the entire lot of them thought caitlin was bringing home a roommate for the holidays.
“i’m so sorry! you just don’t…look gay” her mom would exclaim, trying to apologize. you tried to not look hurt, you understood even.
“mom” caitlin interfered, already knowing how you were upset once again that you were mistaken for a friend. “it’s ok, but can we just drop it? please?”
now, today at brunch, the waitress asked for caitlin’s number right in front of you. while her parents and brothers were talking about work and school and while you and cait were discussing plans for next week, the young woman scurried over to hand caitlin a napkin with her number on it. caitlin had one arm around your shoulder, another fiddling with the rings on your fingers, and the waitress still didn’t catch a hint. after unfolding the crumpled napkin and seeing the bold black numbers, caitlin immediately declined and motioned to you, she was taken.
“oh my god,” the waitress said “i thought you guys were like friends or something i’m so sorry”
you weren’t surprised.
“i feel like something IS wrong though!” you reply to caitlin, running your hands through your hair in annoyance. “i hate that people don’t even see me as your girlfriend and it sucks!”
“i know, but we’re together either way and that’s all that matters” her words of reassurance were doing little to change your mind.
“maybe it’s the way i dress? i know i’m very feminine and stuff, so maybe that’s the issue”
caitlin laughed “YN, it doesn’t matter how you dress, ok? just because people assume we’re friends or assume you’re straight doesn’t mean that it changes your identity at all. i love the way you dress and i don’t want you to change just because people are blind.”
“you’re right, i just want people to know that we’re together” you sighed.
“me too,” she agreed “but at the same time, i really like saying ‘she’s my girlfriend’ to people”
god she was so sweet, “i really like that too”

Incident at the Trampoline Park
Summary: You break your arm at the trampoline park
Warnings: Dislocated Shoulder, Ambulance
Tumblr media
“You excited Monkey?” Kyra asked as she threw you up in the air and caught you.
“Yesss!” you squeal.
“Guys, inside voices, and Kyra be careful, we don’t want any injuries today.” You Mum told you both off.
“Geez, when did you become such an old lady, we aren’t even there yet”.
“Calm down Cait, it’s okay, no one will get hurt and it will just be a fun day out” Your Ma told you Mum.
“Yeah okay, but is this really the best idea, I mean-” “Babe it’s going to be fine,” your Ma cut your Mum off as she placed a kiss on her check, “ready to go Munchkin?” you nodded eagerly.
Today was team bonding day, it was your Ma’s turn to choose the activity and organise it but because your Birthday had just passed and she wasn’t there with you because of international break she let you choose, and you chose to go to a trampoline park, everyone was hesitant to go at first but once they found out it was your choice not Katie’s they were all ecstatic to go. But there were still some on the team that were a bit cautious, your Mum being one of them. Everyone had been informed by their skippers that no one could get injured, as Jonas would kill them if someone got hurt, he strongly suggested to stay away from such activities.
The day had been going great, you met all the girls there and had heaps of fun.
“See, I told you everything would be fine,” your Ma told your Mum.
“Yeah, I guess so-” your Mum was interrupted by a blood curtailing scream, which was accompanied by a “Shit! KATIE! CAITLIN!” both your Mum’s looked over to where the sound came from and saw a bunch of commotion and before they knew it, they were running as fast as they could to get over there. When they reached the area, they saw your little body standing in the middle, Leah was supporting you, keeping you upright as you leaned on her, you were sobbing, face all wet, your left arm just hung by your side, you kept trying to touch it, but Leah kept pushing your arm away from it, which made you frustrated.
“Oh Munchkin,” your Ma cooed as she gently and carefully placed you in her lap.
“Does your shoulder hurt Monkey?” your Mum asked as she pushed the hair that had stuck to your face out of the way. You nodded.
“Coming through,” a path was cleared for the two paramedics.
“Hey little one, can you tell me your name?” the younger one asked you, you shook your head, you just wanted to the pain to go away. “That’s okay, does it hurt?” you nod before adding “f-feels wie-wierd”.
“Oh, that’s no good, I’m just going to touch you here okay,” he touches his own collar bone area, “I promise I won’t touch your shoulder though” you give him a small nod before he starts to feel your collar bone, a certain spot he touches feels very ouchy and you wince in pain.
“It’s okay baby,” your Ma says to you as she rubs your back.
After some more checking he turns to your Mum’s “Shoulder is definitely dislocated, however as she is a child we can’t reset it here, so the hospital will do that, she could also have a small break in her collar bone.” Your Mum’s nod.
______
You wined as Katie put you in your car seat, “I know its uncomfy but you have to sit in your car seat, how bout I sit next to you?” you gave her a small sad nod, “Cait, catch” she threw the keys at Caitlin, who managed to catch them.
“Since when do you let me drive?” “Since princess wants me to sit in the back with her,” “I think I remember you asking her. Not her asking you but anyway get in”.
A few minutes into the drive, you fell asleep. “Love you babe” Katie said from the back seat.
“What was that for? But love you too.” “Can’t a girl just tell her girl she loves her, does there need to be a reason” both of them chuckled. “I’ll update the girls”.
~~
North London is What?
Katie: Just thought to give you all an update, little miss had a dislocated shoulder and a hairline fracture in her collar bone, they were able to reset her shoulder in the ED. Has to wear a sling at all times for the next week and then we will find out more next week.
~~
They were flooded with heaps well wishes messages from the girls.
When you arrived home you were still sleeping so Caitlin when ahead to get some cushions, blankets, and other items to help make you comfortable on the couch and Katie carefully got you out of your car seat and inside, both women were thankful that you had stayed asleep. With you asleep on the couch they went into the kitchen to get some of the necessities, so they had them at arm’s reach, you were always very clingy whenever you were sick or hurt.
“You okay?” Caitlin asked Katie.
“What do you mean?” Katie asked almost defensively, Caitlin knew there was something definitely wrong, Katie only reacted like that when there was, and she had a small suspicion she knew what it was, well it was more than one thing.
“Babe, come here,” she said as she pulled her in closer for a hug, “you know you’re an amazing Mum.”
“It doesn’t feel like it Cait,” Katie’s voice broke, Caitlin unwrapped her arms from around Katie and move her hands up to either side of her face, using her thumbs to wipe away the few tears that had fallen out of Katie’s eyes, “hey, don’t cry, it’s okay, you are an amazing Mum she adores you.”
“But does she? She always chooses to go with you on camp, I’ve never been picked once.” More tears started falling out of Katie’s eyes and Caitlin wrapped her in another hug.
“You know, she only chooses to go on camp with me because of Harper, Kyra and Charli, I swear it’s like I don’t even exist on camp,” Katie lets out a small laugh, “Hang on, can you hear that?” Caitlin said, it sounded like there were voices coming from the living room.
“Hello?” Katie questioned as they walked into the living room seeing some of their teammates sitting there.
“We just thought to let ourselves in to drop off our gifts, we didn’t want to disturb you, but then we saw monkey and couldn’t help sitting down,” Steph admitted, Leah, Kyra and Beth all nodded in response.
Caitlin sat down next to a now awake you and Katie sat at your feet next to Leah, “You okay?” Leah asked Katie.
“Yeah,” Katie said as she nodded and gave a weak smile.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” Your Mum asked you as she went to pull you in for a hug, but you climbed out of her arms and shuffled over to Katie.
“Want Ma,” you said, and with that Caitlin gave Katie a smile.
______
“No, want to stay with you,” you grumbled from your car seat, Katie had told you that you were going to stay inside with Oscar today at training, usually you loved spending time with Oscar, but you were still ouchy and wanted to say with your Mum’s.
Your Mum’s phone buzzed before she looked at it, “How-bout you sit on the side with Steph Monkey?”
“Stephy,” your voice perked up at the mention of one of your favourite people. Your Ma, looked at your Mum confused, “Steph just messaged the group chat, said her period is bad today so she messaged Jonas, he told her to sit out, so she is going to watch training from the sidelines.”
“Does that mean Stephy will be grouchy?” you questioned “No, Monkey, at least I don’t think so” you Mum replied laughing, your Ma sent her a death stare. Your Mum’s had told you what a period was when you first asked as they wanted to be open and honest about your body, but it washed over your head, clearly too young, the only thing you remember is it’s a lady problem that happens once a month, and it's why your Ma gets grouchy every month around a certain date, or at least that’s what your Mum said.
You arrived at the colony slightly later than normal today as it took a bit longer to get ready this morning due to the circumstances, so you went straight through to the training pitch, when you walked out on the grass you saw Steph in the shade near the water bottles, leaning again a wall, with her knees tucked into her chest.
“You alright?” Your Mum asked as you got closer to her.
“Yeah, just you know,” Steph replied, “Rough time?” she asked when she saw you, you seemed sadder than usual, for obvious reasons, but also extra clingy and you held your stuffy and blanky in your good arm which Steph never saw you with unless it was nap time or bedtime.
“More like rough last 5 minutes, there were some tears shed as we got out of the car seat, but yeah also rough night, someone didn’t get much sleep” she replied to her teammate before kneeling down in front of you “do you want to ask your question to Steph?”
“Stephy, I sit with you, please?” you asked softly.
“Of course, Monkey, how bout you sit in my lap?” you nodded softly at her suggestion.
“You sure, she has a pillow, Katie has it, she can just lay down next to you,” Your Mum said, she was concerned for her friend, she had never seen her bothered by her period.
“I’m sure Cait, don’t worry it’s fine, and plus I don’t think she is going to be causing me much trouble” Steph said as she opened her arms for you, she helped keep you steady as you climbed into her lap, you put your legs out in front of you, they were much shorter than Steph’s, your feet barely touched her knees, you then leaned your back on her stomach and your head rested just below her chest, the wind was chilly so your Mum put your blanket over you and soon enough you had fallen asleep.

Romanced! FO4 Companions and the Little Things They Do in Relationships
Alright, so this one wasn't really a request, but just a lil amalgamation of relationship headcannons that I compiled recently.
I'm definitely still getting back into the swing of things in terms of writing, so my output hasn't been fantastic lately, but hopefully this lil tidbit makes y'all smile 😊
I hope you enjoy!
Cait:
Gives her partner massages often. When there’s that rare bit of downtime, she’ll take the opportunity to help both her and her partner relax, and this is a great way to do it. She's exceptionally gifted at them, given her time spent in the ring and having to combat that bodily soreness herself. She also loves how they tend to end up leading to a lil something more with her partner (wink, wink).
Curie:
This girl compliments you at every turn. Any little good thing that comes to mind, she's the first to say, and she does it often. Always the first to see the best in people, to see their potential, and you, of course, are no exception. Her compliments tend to be about your clothes, words, and actions rather than just flattering your physical appearance. Though, she definitely does that on occasion as well.
Danse:
He always checks in with his partner a few times a day. Even if you're both working on projects separately, he likes to come over and ask how your day is going/how you're feeling. Even if you spend the whole day at each other's side, he takes a couple rest stops and asks how you're doing along the way. Maybe it stems from his time as a CO, always checking in with his team and getting/giving status updates, but it’s one of the main ways he shows that he cares.
Deacon:
He notices a lot about his partner. The way your nails are torn and shortened means you're stressed, or when you bite your lip that certain way it means you're nervous, when you’ve been particularly spacey, it means you’re dwelling on the past and probably not in the best headspace that day. He’s not great at bringing it up and chatting about it, but he adjusts his behavior and his humor to fit the mood you’re in, and when time and space allow, he does what he can to distract you from some of the more negative feelings that may be rising up.
Hancock:
He always needs a hand on his partner, or just to be touching them somehow. It's not that he's really trying to be possessive, per-say, he just can't get enough of you. Always is holding your hand, or throwing an arm over your shoulders, or pulling you practically into his lap with a giddy smile on his face. When you’re not actively in his lap, he’s happy to settle for leaning his head on your shoulder, or brushing your thigh with his own, or even just holding pinkies.
MacCready:
He's a great gift giver. Definitely the partner that often finds little things that remind him of you, and he tends to gift them to you with a blushy explanation of how you come to mind with so much of what he sees. He’s also quite crafty, and enjoys giving homemade gifts as well. Definitely the one to suggest homemade presents for anniversaries and birthdays and such.
Nick:
Always kisses you before he leaves, and it's the first thing he does when he returns to you. Real old-fashioned, but it's a trend that he'd never give up, cuz it means all the more when it's with you. The memories of it with the old Nick just don't hold up the same way.
Piper:
The partner to leave little notes all over the place to let you know she was thinking of you. In the bathroom, on the kitchen counter, over your pillow, anywhere really is fair game. They just contain little compliments and inspirational quotes or reminders of memories with you. Whatever good thing she thinks of you, she just writes it down and leaves it for you to find and reminisce upon yourself.
Preston:
He always brings you flowers (or another, equally thoughtful, gift) whenever he returns home. Usually he tries to find your favorites in terms of blooms, but he just loves the extra color in the house and the way you light up when you see them (he doesn’t really realize that the true reason you’re lighting up is because he’s coming home to you).
X6-88:
He remembers all of the little details about you that anyone else would usually ignore or forget. Favorite color and food, your allergies, your favorite number, favorite song and the artist it's by. All of it is duly noted by the courser, and put into consideration when he's gifting you something, when you two go to eat, or when the radio is playing. He may not be too long-winded in speech, but he’s a tremendous listener and observer.

plot: during jada’s live the fans get to see a glimpse of you and cait’s relations
Hopelessly Devoted - C.C. x Reader
on the weekends, you always made it a point to hang out with caitlin. it didn’t matter if it was just you two, or your whole friend group; you were always around her. making sure you spent time with her and being in her presence was important to you and your relationship, as one of your love languages was quality time. with you, caitlin, and the rest of the girls being so busy with the basketball season in full swing, you and her hadn’t really had your weekend hangouts or date nights.
that was why when gabbie suggested the group come over to her apartment for a chill night everyone agreed. at first, cait was a little reluctant and wanting to spend the night off together alone, but you assured her there would be plent of time for that later.
so there the five of you, kate, jada, gabbie, caitlin, and yourself, sat in gabbie’s living room spending some quality time together. you all enjoyed the time spent together until jada had an idea.
“guys, wanna go live?” she asked, to which you all agreed. jada pulled out her phone and clicked on the instagram icon and started the live. comments quickly flooded in, fans having a field day they got to see all of you together. you all took turns answering questions from fans.
y/nfan1 | are y/n and caitlin a hallway couple 😕
“oh my god this question is hilarious! are y/n and caitlin a hallway couple?” jada read the comment out loud and started cackling. gabbie and kate joined in on the laughter. jada turned the camera back to her face and nodded silently then flipped it to you and caitlin’s rolling your eyes.
“bro we are not a hallway couple.” caitlin said, as she pulled you back into her. you looked up at your girlfriend and kissed her cheek to shush her. “babe,” you started, “you’re proving their point shhh.”
you were sitting on the couch with caitlin behind her legs, your back up against her front. she lightly rubbed and massaged your shoulders in an attempt to break up some tension you’d been having from the long practices. you leaned back into her and were greeted with caitlin peppering a few kisses on your head. kate gagged.
“you guys are like, disgustingly cute. can’t believe it took so long for you to get together.” she said and the other two girls laughed along.

caitlin clark x reader
warnings:straight reader for a min
Tumblr media
being teammates with caitlin clark on the indiana fever was incredible. she was a superstar, both on and off the court, and quickly became your best friend when you joined the team. you clicked instantly—whether it was cracking jokes in the locker room or pushing each other to be better during practices, you two had a bond that went beyond just basketball. caitlin was someone you could rely on, and that meant the world to you.
but for caitlin, it was something more.
from the day she met you, caitlin felt that spark. it started as a crush, the kind you get when someone just captivates you. you were beautiful, smart, and a killer player. but then you became her best friend, and caitlin was stuck. she watched you with your boyfriend, always laughing, always happy—or at least, that’s what it looked like from the outside. you were straight, or so you believed, and caitlin knew she didn’t stand a chance. but she couldn’t help it—the way she felt about you only grew stronger, even though it killed her to see you with someone else.
the worst part was how often you talked to caitlin about him. about how you’d had a fight or how he wasn’t as attentive as he used to be. she wanted to scream every time, wanted to tell you that he didn’t deserve you, that she would treat you better, but she held back. after all, what could she do? you were in love with him—or at least, you thought you were.
“ugh, he’s being so distant lately,” you muttered after practice one day. you were sitting in the locker room next to caitlin, texting your boyfriend and frowning at the screen.
caitlin clenched her jaw, trying to keep her expression neutral. “maybe he’s just busy?” she offered, though she knew that wasn’t the real issue.
you sighed, putting your phone down. “i don’t know… sometimes it feels like we’re just going through the motions, you know? like, he’s there, but it doesn’t feel like he sees me anymore.”
caitlin bit her tongue, resisting the urge to say what was really on her mind. “you deserve someone who’s going to be there for you—really be there,” she said quietly, her voice laced with frustration. “someone who actually sees you.”
you smiled weakly at her, not catching the deeper meaning in her words. “thanks, cait. i don’t know what i’d do without you.”
she forced a smile, though inside, it felt like a knife twisting in her chest. she hated seeing you unhappy with him, but what could she do? you were straight. you weren’t going to leave your boyfriend for her, no matter how badly she wanted it.
but then, everything changed.
one night, after a tough game, the team went out to celebrate a hard-fought win. you had a few drinks—nothing too crazy—but enough to loosen up and relax after the stress of the game. caitlin was by your side, as always, laughing and joking with you. as the night wore on, the two of you ended up outside the bar, sitting on a bench, a little tipsy but still aware of what was happening.
you leaned your head on her shoulder, sighing contentedly. “i don’t know what i’d do without you,” you mumbled, the alcohol making you more affectionate than usual.
caitlin’s heart raced at the contact, but she tried to play it cool. “well, i’m not going anywhere,” she said softly, her hand resting on your knee.
you turned your head to look at her, your gaze lingering a little longer than it should have. something in her eyes made your stomach flutter, but you quickly brushed it off. it’s just caitlin, you told yourself. you’re straight. you have a boyfriend.
but then she leaned in, just a little, and suddenly, the air between you felt different.
“what are you staring at?” she teased, tossing you a wink, but her voice was softer, more intense than usual.
“nothing,” you teased back, grinning. “no big deal.”
she chuckled, but her eyes never left yours. “you know,” she began, her voice low, “i’ve been wanting to say something for a while, but i wasn’t sure how you’d take it.”
you frowned slightly, the playful mood shifting into something more serious. “what do you mean?”
caitlin swallowed hard, her heart pounding. this was it—the moment she’d been dreading, but also the moment she couldn’t hold back any longer. “i like you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “i really like you.”
your breath caught in your throat, and you blinked, trying to process what she was saying. “caitlin… i have a boyfriend,” you stammered, though your voice sounded less convincing than you’d hoped.
“i know,” she said, her eyes locked on yours. “but i can’t help how i feel. and i don’t think you can either.”
you opened your mouth to protest, to say something, anything to push this away, but the words wouldn’t come. because deep down, you knew she was right. there was something between you—something you hadn’t let yourself acknowledge until now.
“i’ve never been with a girl,” you whispered, your heart racing.
caitlin smiled softly, her hand sliding up your thigh, sending shivers down your spine. “you don’t have to decide anything right now,” she murmured, her lips just inches from yours. “but i can’t pretend anymore.”
before you could think, before you could stop yourself, you closed the distance between you, pressing your lips to hers. the kiss was electric, like a spark had been ignited between you, and suddenly, everything made sense. it wasn’t your boyfriend who made you feel like this—it was caitlin. it had always been caitlin.
her hands slid up your back, pulling you closer as the kiss deepened, and you melted into her touch, your mind spinning. you’d never felt like this before, never wanted someone the way you wanted her.
when you finally pulled back, breathless, you stared at her in shock, your heart pounding in your chest. “what does this mean?” you whispered, your voice shaky.
caitlin’s lips curved into a small smile, her hand still resting on your thigh. “it means you’ve been with the wrong person all along.”

Protective Caitlin Clark x Reader
Summary: Reader has an interesting encounter with her mom, CC is there for it all.
Warnings: Toxic family
A/N: I really thought the kate fic was going to win that poll. Lmk if you still want me to post it. Also posting two fics in a week is crazy for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Caitlin had been together for nearly three years, a relationship that had withstood the judgment and disapproval of those who should have supported you the most. Pursuing photography, joining the basketball’s media team at Iowa—these were choices your parents couldn't understand, let alone accept. But choosing Cait over them when they gave you that ultimatum was the hardest thing you'd ever done. Caitlin, though, was your rock. Her and her family had welcomed you into their lives, making you feel at home in a way you hadn't in years.
Now, in your fourth year at Iowa, things were better. The sting of your parents' rejection had dulled over time, and you were happier than you ever thought possible. You were at the grocery store with Caitlin when it happened—one of those moments that bring the past crashing back into the present.
The grocery store wasn’t usually your idea of a fun date, but with her anything could be an adventure. You walked into the store together, your hand securely in hers, laughing at the way she was rambling about how drinking water with your off hand is less efficient than with your dominant hand. This girl had an interesting mind.
It was a Saturday afternoon, She had practice very early today and you two had decided to do a little “grocery challenge” where you’d each pick out ingredients for a dish and see whose creation turned out best.
"Okay, so rules are simple," Caitlin grinned, pulling out her phone to set a timer. "We split up, grab what we need for our dish, and meet back here in fifteen minutes. Loser has to do the dishes."
You raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on your lips. "You know I’m not losing this, right? I’ve been practicing my culinary skills."
"Oh, I’m terrified," Caitlin teased, rolling her eyes dramatically. "But we’ll see, hotshot. Ready... set... go!" she said but followed it up with a fast “wait!”
You stopped in your tracks and turned around. She grabbed your face in her hands and gave you a sweet kiss.
“good luck buddy you’re gonna need it”
You both took off, laughing as you darted down different aisles. Caitlin made a beeline for the produce section, and you headed toward the dairy, each trying to gather your secret ingredients without the other seeing. Every so often, you’d pass each other in an aisle, sharing a playful wink or a mock-serious glare before rushing off to find the next item on your list.
The store wasn’t particularly busy, which gave you the freedom to really enjoy yourselves. Caitlin even managed to sneak a small bag of candy into your basket when she thought you weren’t looking, clearly planning to snack on it while she cooked. You pretended not to notice, already plotting how you’d use that information against her later.
You were just rounding a corner, checking the shelves for the perfect seasoning to complete your dish, when you heard a familiar voice behind you. It was so unexpected that you froze mid-step, the excitement of the challenge instantly draining away.
The familiar voice hit you like a ton of bricks. "Oh wow, it’s been a while," your mother said, her tone unmistakable. You froze, the playful mood of the grocery challenge evaporating in an instant. She was standing there with a friend, both of them looking at you with judgmental eyes. Your stomach twisted as the anxiety rushed in, the past crashing back into your present.
You turned slowly, dread pooling in your chest as you met your mother’s cold gaze. "How’s that photography dream turning out? Still with that girl?" she added, her words dripping with condescension. Her friend snickered, and you felt yourself shrink under the weight of their gaze.
All the fun you had been having just moments ago vanished. The lightness, the joy—gone, replaced by the familiar sting of shame and doubt. You couldn’t find the words to respond. You just wanted to disappear.
Then, like a lifeline, Caitlin appeared at the end of the aisle. She had that determined look on her face, the one that told you she’d seen everything and wasn’t about to let it slide. Her eyes met yours first, softening for just a moment as she took in your distressed expression. Then, she turned her attention to your mother”
"Is there a problem here?" Caitlin asked, her voice steady but laced with an edge that you knew meant she was ready to defend you.
Your mother’s eyes narrowed at Caitlin’s arrival, clearly displeased. "I was just having a chat with my daughter. Is that a problem?"
"Depends on what you consider 'chatting'," Caitlin replied coolly, moving closer to you, her hand finding its familiar place on the small of your back. The gentle tracing of her fingers instantly started to calm your racing heart.
Your mother’s expression hardened. "Maybe if you hadn’t led her astray, she’d be on a better path."
Caitlin’s eyes darkened "Led her astray? The only thing I’ve done is love her and support her. All you’ve done is make her doubt herself, question her worth. You don’t get to do that anymore."
Your mother’s friend shifted uncomfortably, clearly taken aback by Caitlin’s fierce defense. Your mother, however, seemed stunned, not expecting this kind of confrontation. Caitlin leaned in slightly, her voice a soft but firm whisper. "You lost the right to criticize her when you made her choose. And she chose to be happy."
Caitlin’s words hung in the air, leaving your mother speechless.
With a final glance at your mother, Caitlin turned to you, her expression softening as she placed a gentle kiss on your head. "Let’s go, baby."
The ride home was quiet, the earlier playful mood long gone. Caitlin kept glancing over at you, her concern evident, but she didn’t push. She knew you needed time to process.
Once home, you headed straight for the bathroom, needing a moment to yourself. You stared into the mirror, trying to make sense of everything, but all you felt was the sharp sting of your mother's words replaying in your mind. How could the person who was supposed to love you the most feel that way about you? A tear slipped down your cheek, and you quickly wiped it away, but Caitlin had already seen it.
She walked in silently, her eyes meeting yours through the reflection. Without a word, she wrapped her arms around your waist from behind, holding you close. "It’s okay, sweetheart. I got you," she whispered, her voice steady, comforting.
You turned in her arms, resting your head against her chest as more tears fell. "I just... I don’t understand," you choked out, your voice trembling. "How could she... how could she feel like that about me? She's supposed to love me, but all she does is make me feel worthless. And even though I know better, I still... I still want her to love me."
Caitlin gently wiped the tears from your cheeks, her expression soft and full of love. "I know, baby. I know. But she doesn’t get to define your worth. You’re amazing, and strong, and kind, and I love you more than anything in this world. You’re doing so good right now, love. Think about all the hard work and sacrifices you made to get to this point. You stumbled and fell, but at the end of the day, you’re here, and you’re happy. No one can take that away from you. Especially not her." She paused, her thumb brushing gently across your cheek as she looked deep into your eyes. "I know it hurts that she doesn’t love you the way she should. That she doesn’t see how incredible you are. But you need to know this—she might not love you most in the world, but I do. I’m so proud of you,baby, for everything you’ve overcome, and for the person you’ve become. You deserve all the happiness in the world, and I’m going to be here, by your side, loving you through it all."
Her words wrapped around you like a warm blanket, easing the ache in your chest. You let out a small sniffle, managing a faint smile through the tears. "Are you only saying that because I take good pictures of you?"
Caitlin chuckled softly as she pulled you into another hug, placing a tender kiss on the top of your head. "Was it that obvious?" she teased, her voice full of warmth and affection.
You couldn’t help but smile a little wider, feeling the comfort of her embrace and the lightness she brought back into the moment. Caitlin had a way of making everything better, even on your darkest days.
Brief explanation on my interpretation of these guys
Cait; an animal, when cornered, begins to roar. It puffs itself up, feathers and fur raised, teeth bared. An animal with its claws out is an animal afraid. Cait does not want to hurt—but she doesn't want to be hurt. A victor is not a victim—a predator, not prey. She had it beaten into her, and beat it into herself so she'd never forget. The claws are always out, teeth always bared, eyes always flicking across the room. But once she starts recovery, she's free to be herself. Cait slows down. She sleeps in when she feels like it. She eats when she has an appetite. She takes the time to bathe, to brush her hair and teeth. Once the loudest, brightest burning fire in the room, she mellows into a match—the potential of explosion is there, but for now, she's only a little light. Her eyes are no less sharp, but Cait only wants to be left with her friends, and enjoy the peace and quiet she can steal away for them. Her ambitions are small and unimpressive, and she appears more like a cat lazing in a sunbeam than any pit dog.
Curie; well meaning, and sweet, but too smart for her own good and she knows and acts like it. She wants the best for you, but she thinks she knows what that is. Sometimes she does, but Curie often forgets that people are more complicated than the biology that comprises them. Curie is bubbly, and social, but struggles with the idea that her perception of things is just that—her perception. It could be a result of her coding, her nature as a preprogrammed robot with set realities, or it could be a sign of her humanity. It's the critical flaw every human has, after all. Her sense of justice is too strong for her body. Her grief is too strong for her body. She examines each sensation—anger is in her cheeks and chest. Joy is a lightness in her head. Sorrow is a bitter lump in her throat, and cold hands. She wants to help everyone and everything. She knows she can't. She will try, anyway, and no one needs to know if it hurts. There is no other fate for someone so kind.
Danse; He once called the thing in his chest Wrath. Righteous connotations, implied justification and the promise of vengeance. Whatever brought this Wrath will meet it. The Wrath was provoked, summoned, and therefore, the summoner is the hand of their own undoing. Danse doesn't think about how this frees him of accountability. What he does is not his fault. The blood is not on his hands. He's a tool of Wrath—not one man of thousands, free to choose for himself. Danse doesn't respect himself enough to believe in his own judgement. He finds himself a stumbling fool, soft in the heart, fragile outside of his armor. Gentleness comes naturally to him. Such a huge man, and his heart is still too big for his body. He is equal parts intelligent and kind, but a soldier has no need for his own mind, and kindness has no place in war. Danse doesn't trust himself. He doesn't trust that his choices, his ideas for the world, are right. He leaves himself in the hands of the Brotherhood. The responsibility is no longer his.
Deacon; You can't change a soul, and Deacon seethes at this. He is the same man he was all those years ago. It's only his body that he can change. Even then, only by so much. His eyes are recognizable. Silvery blue, tired, and paradoxically, as sharp as they are dull. He never looks like he's fully there with you. Always a few steps into some other reality. Deacon wants to be good. He wants to clear his name. It really is Deacon, but no one needs to know. He is the same man. He lies about what he's done, the things he's seen, but he'll never lie about what matters. So, he will always be Deacon, because the important parts never change. He knows and hates this. The synths are what drive him now—people looking to be themselves, to wear their own face. He gets it more than any other human. Sometimes he wishes he was a synth, just so he didn't have to be Deacon. But he's stuck with himself. He keeps himself company through all the faces he wears, and leaves them when he feels to close to a life he could make for himself. A lie left to settle could grow into a truth. He loathes himself but fundamentally, there is a good man in there. Only a good man can want to be better. But he feels that good man isn't good, that being good is what he has to reach for first. He is stuck in a loop of trying, when he doesn't have to try. Deacon is Deacon, and he doesn't know. He isn't unsalvageable. Just buried so deep under attempts he doesn't need to make. The only forgiveness that can save him is his own.
Gage; if Cait is a pit dog, Gage is a bull. This creature is no gentle thing, those horns are not merely regal. But in other life, he could have sat with his field and his herd. He could have watched the clouds roll on by with the wind, and kept watch on the outskirts of his pasture. A gentle thing, lumbering and quiet, but on guard. Always waiting to gore. Even as he circles his farm, he has kept it this long because there is nothing more dangerous than he. But as it stands, he has found what he thinks is a calling in violence. It doesn't come as naturally to him as the stray dogs he runs with. Meat has no place in his flat teeth. But he runs with them nonetheless and keeps pace. He leads the charge whether they admit it or not. Gage is strength and sharpened bone, but they were never meant to initiate. He is meant to stand his ground. He was meant to protect. But no one saw it coming, the bull with the predators, and surprise is a deathblow. It's easier to hunt than be hunted. You eat what you can get even if it fits wrong in your jaws.
Hancock; There is a flavor found in the guilt of the privileged that you can't find anywhere else. He was raised wealthy, well off. When he was younger, he watched others starve, die, suffer, and knew it was an aspect of life. It was nothing to mourn. It was inevitable. Between the exile and his revival of Goodneighbor, Hancock feels his biggest crime is not finding his shame sooner. He will say he has no shame, no embarrassment. Hancock lies awake at night thinking of every meal he's eaten when there was enough to spare for everyone else, but they went hungry. He thinks of people beaten in streets and how quickly he turned around. He thinks of how his own survival is selfish when so many good people die. Hancock is anger given flesh. It's not like Cait's; his is a wailing misery, stalking the ruins and knowing what Graveyard he steps in. Hancock feels too much sympathy for him to handle. He has to numb himself or he will lose it. He'll break under the shame of not knowing better sooner. Hancock finds blood on his hands that isn't there. Most of all, he hates how bad it makes him feel. Hancock thinks he has no right to the shame or the pain. There is worse. His disgust at his inactions is not enough. It's isn't enough that he tries to help now. He didn't help then. Hancock doesn't forgive easily.
MacCready; A quiet boy raising a quiet boy of his own. MacCready seeks peace in a way most people can't. He finds sunbeams filtering through windows, plants creeping through concrete, birdsong on the wind. MacCready is the everyday wastelander; too young to see the things he's seen. But he's different. Robert finds enjoyment in the world around him. He entertains himself, takes pride in his skills, and takes pleasure in good company in such a simple way, he feels almost out of time. In other world, he could have been the one crawling out from a Vault. MacCready is haunted like anyone. His ghost doesn't terrify him. Her memory is a comfort. It hurts and always will, but MacCready wanders on. He finds toys for their child and takes interest in them as if he's still a little boy himself. He feels as much, most days. MacCready is often distrusted, but often very beloved, because he is himself. There is no character, no mask, nothing warping the man you speak to. He is a kid trying to take care of his kid, but he'll take a moment to crack jokes at you and talk about something he read in a magazine. For someone so materially greedy, on a personal level, all he wants from anyone is pleasant conversation. It's refreshingly human in a time where even humans seem more like monsters.
Nick; A painful period of one man's life, etched into hardware and frozen forever. The man dies but his pain lives, trapped in the agony of grief and betrayal. If Hancock is anger in flesh, Nick is disgust in a jar. Disgust at the injustice, at the trickery of a mastermind, the wasted life of a fine woman. Disgust at himself, fading away into a bitter old man who failed his city and his love. Valentine was a very good man who took a very dark turn after Jenny. Nick is the moment before he fell off that precipice. If Nick knew who Valentine hardened into, he'd have yet another crisis, another thing to brood over. Nick is so loved by Diamond city because he is an inhuman thing, but so capable of love and tenderness. He is all give, and incapable of take. You can't give him anything in return, and you don't need to. He's a robot very good at comforting. A robot doesn't need comfort. Nick convinces himself of this, as well. But people try. Humans get attached to the inhuman. A child hugs his leg and says they're glad he made it back. A guard throws an arm over his shoulder when he can't save someone and tells him he still did good. People hand him patches of fabric for Ellie to sew into his trench coat. Nick is loved. To be loved is to be known. Nick doesn't even know himself.
Piper; The plight of the angry woman rarely leads to a happy ending. The angry woman has her reasons. She is right. However, there are techniques to achieve results. A battering ram doesn't fix a door, it merely opens the path. Piper sees problems, but her solutions forget the complicated world around her. She wants to fix things. Some things can't be fixed, or the problem isn't actually what she thinks it is, or maybe it's just not the right time. Piper sees a problem, and the simplicity of knowing it has to change is enough for her. She barrels at the betterment of the world and doesn't think about it. She is angry that things are wrong. Piper is a young woman scared out of her mind, for herself, her sister, her community. The people around her beg her to be careful, to slow down, to not burn herself in the attempt to set the evils around her on fire. Piper doesn't realize how reckless she is. She doesn't realize that her life has value beyond fixing everything. A reporters job is to report. It is not to be a savior. Piper speaks the truth, but when nothing changes, she thinks her job isn't done. Her job is to spread the word. Piper thinks it is up to her to act on it. Her work will never be enough for her.
Preston; A good man hanging on by a thread. So close to being a monster to the people preying on him and his kin. Preston holds civilians in one arm, and a gun in the next. He has lost much of his mercy, and much of his patience. But he still acts on it. He knows right from wrong even if the wrong seems like it's the only thing that can soothe the fire in his gut. Preston lets people talk about him as if he is a gentle soul, still. As if he's merely a gentle lamb. Preston feels more like a guard dog who can still smell the bloodied wool of all the herds he's failed before. He won't even grace the next pack of wolves with a warning howl. This rage terrifies him, but Preston feels that being scared is how you stay alive, now. If you're not scared, you're not paying attention, you haven't noticed the torches on the hill. He is so angry it makes him sick. Gunshots from Quincy still ring in his ears. He still hears Hollis hit the ground dead. Preston wants to be a good person. He is one. But there is so much fury inside him, that he fears any chance of revenge that he gets will rip that away from him. He just needs one chance, and he'll be a monster like the Commonwealth has never seen before. He'll just be on its side.
X6-88; A robot with human traits, different from other synths. All of them have humanity they hide away, but X6 is exactly what he seems like. There is no internal softness, no tenderness or wanting. He doesn't stare at the sun and ponder his existence. He doesn't count the stars and think about what makes up a soul. Oddly, his disinterest in his humanity is rather human in itself. X6 is not concerned with his rights or his status as a living thing. This frustrates many in the Institute. Synths were made to be adaptable. In many ways, X6 isn't. He's the most inflexible motherfucker they've ever met. There is one way to do things. There is always an answer for a question and if you haven't found it, the question is pointless or you're stupid. Humanity doesn't seem efficient so he doesn't want it. He fascinates many. Most synths will give a long, careful answer about their existence, worded just so they don't get wiped. X6, when asked if he is human, will say no and look vaguely irritated that you could compare him to one. This is not intended. No one programmed in this lack of curiosity. He is so robotic, so one note, that he sticks out like a sore thumb from the other synths. X6 wears his inorganicness like a badge of honor. He is not human. He is better. The Institute argues about him constantly, whether he is an accidental success they didn't know they should strive for, or a black mark against everything they believe.
Sweetbans Masterlist
AN:
Caitlin is the light of your life. She has been since the first day that you met her. The friendship that was built between the two of you is one that has kept you going even when everything else in the world seemed to be working against you.
The two of you met freshman year during summer training - your high school had conditioning days to help get everyone into shape before their respective seasons or pre-seasons.
You had been talking to the soccer coach and they encouraged you to go to training, talking about how varsity was very promising for your freshman year. You were one of three freshmen that they were looking at joining the varsity team.
Caitlin was one of the other girls they were looking at. The two of you were some of the first people to show up on the first day, immediately hitting it off and talking about how competitive you both are. The two of you spent the latter part of the summer suffering through training together. You thought Caitlin was insane for playing both basketball and soccer at the same time but seeing how much she enjoyed playing the game, it made sense.
She made the transition into high school bearable. Your freshman year the two of you spent most of your time at school - either in the classroom or on the field. You learned that having her as a teammate was the best possible outcome that you could have ever had.
It was the summer going into sophomore year when the two of you spent pretty much every day at her house. The two of you would keep up with your training so once pre-season workouts started you wouldn't die like the summer before.
That summer was one of the best summers you have ever had - most of it was because you spent it at hers and didn't have to be home. It was also the best because, after a night of deep life conversations, you admitted your feelings for the girl. To your delight, she reciprocated them and the two of you started dating that summer.
During the school year, you would always go watch her play basketball when you weren't both on the field for soccer. And any time the two of you hung out, it would either be doing something out and about or at Caitlin's.
It wasn't until the end of sophomore year that Caitlin questioned why she hadn't met your parents yet.
Your soccer team made it to State and it was the talk of the town. It was the first time the girl's soccer team had made it and for the championship game, the whole school was going to support.
Up to this point, Caitlin hasn't said much but knowing how excited and proud you were for this game she decided to test the waters.
"Hey babe, I have a question for you," She says as the two of you are walking out of practice.
"What's up?" You ask as you are trying to make sure your bag is closed as you juggle carrying everything you need to bring home before the game.
"Why is it whenever we hang out, it is always at my house? You have gotten to know my parents and you know they absolutely love you but I haven't met yours yet?" She asks. In her mind, the reason you haven't introduced her to them is because you were ashamed of her in some way.
You see how her shoulders slump a little and how disappointment lingers on her face. It makes you stop dead in your tracks and she stops but doesn't look at you.
You turn to face her but her eyes don't meet yours. You try to get her to look at you but she keeps avoiding your gaze.
"Hey, hey. Look at me Cait." You say as your bag comes to the ground and your hand comes up to her arm, forcing her to stay facing you. She finally gives in and makes eye contact with you.
"My parents would love you." You say. "They are just super busy all the time. I barely see them." You don't know if now is the time to dive into the whole story as to why you spend so much time at her house and not at home. Ever since you have gotten to high school - you did everything in your power to stay away from home which was easy to do with all the events and extracurriculars. You never wanted to get in their way since they made it very known any time you did.
"I just thought it was because of me or that we are dating or something like that," she says, avoiding your gaze again. "I know some parents are as supportive of the relationship we have."
"Oh babe, that's not it, I promise. When the opportunity presents itself I will introduce you. It is just hard when they are so busy." You say reassuring your girl.
Caitlin trusts you. She knows how much you love her already and has no doubts that you want her. It is just hard at times when Cait sees how much her family loves you and wants that to be reciprocated with your parents. She knows you spend most of your time at hers, whether it be after practice or spending the night but it would be nice to be able to see your home.
Cait also knows how you look for them in the crowd during games but never says anything. It is the polar opposite of her family who is at every one of her games - even pre-season. You never bring it up, nor does Cait, but she notices.
The championship game was no different. In the first half, she noticed how your eyes would scan the crowd in hopes of seeing them there. It isn't until after your team has won that hope fades from your eyes as you are congratulated by everyone except the two people who should be there. Caitlin almost misses the tears that threaten to fall from your eyes as her parents come up with flowers and a poster for you. She doesn't say anything but takes note.
You told yourselves that if your parents couldn't get themselves to come to one of the biggest games of your career thus far, then you would truly stay out of their way and just bear what you needed before heading to college.
The next time Caitlin brings it up is during junior year when she offers to pick you up for a date and you turn her down, saying you will meet her at hers.
Caitlin pushes it and insists on picking you up, suggesting that the two of you spend the night at your house this time since her parents will be throwing a dinner party with their friends.
You tell her that they can't stay yours because your parents have a project that they are working on and have taken over the house.
Cait doesn't cave and continues to bug you about it which is the cause of your first fight.
The two of you don't end up going out due to being frustrated with one another. Caitlin doesn't understand why she can't go to your house since the two of you have been together for almost two years at this point and she still hasn't met your parents. You on the other hand don’t know why Caitlin pushes so hard when everything is perfectly fine the way it is currently.
You rarely talk about your parents or home life and for good reason. You didn't lie when you said your parents were always busy but it also wasn't the complete truth.
The relationship with your parents changed drastically when your family moved to Des Moines, IA. Before the move, you were one big happy family. Your parents were super involved in school events and they were always supporting you in sports. But then your dad's job had you moving to a new city and pulling your family away from its community and everything shifted.
Your mom fell into a major depression - taking away from her being a mother. Your dad was always busy with work, making sure to provide for your family. This left you to have to fend for yourself. As you grew up you realized that the less of a burden you were the happier your parents were. They began to enjoy life again but the second you needed something or pulled them from the life that they began building without you - it was like all hell broke loose. They changed from being their happier selves and treated you like you weren't even wanted anymore.
It wasn't hard to see that your parents enjoyed life better without you so you decided to be the least of a burden as you could. Staying out late so they wouldn't have to see you and leaving really early. The less they saw you the less you had to deal with the verbal abuse.
That is why you worked so hard in school and in your sport. You needed an out and didn't want to give them any reason for them to say no. Although knowing your dad, he would pay for you to go whenever you wanted as long as it was far away. But you didn't want to owe him anything. So you poured yourself into your academics and soccer, making yourself one of the top recruits for college.
Caitlin and you made up shortly after the fight, both apologizing for what was said. The two of you decided that your relationship with each other was more important than your relationships with others.
It isn't until senior year that it comes up again but in a very different way than you would have expected.
It is signing day for seniors and you and Caitlin were both signing to Iowa to play your respective sports. Cait dropped soccer going into her junior year as basketball became her main sport. She verbally committed to the University of Iowa that year and you verbally committed to be a Hawkeye for soccer just a few months later. But today is the day the school sets up an assembly where you physically sign your papers.
Your parents are coming to the assembly, knowing the only reason they were there is because it was mandatory for them to be there. If it didn't involve you leaving, they wouldn't give it the time of day.
You are nervous as this would be the first time they are in the same building as Caitlin and her family. You know Caitlin's parents will be amazing, they always are, but for yours - you have no idea how they would react.
They know you have been dating a girl named Caitlin for a while now but never asked you about it. They could honestly care less, which is saying something considering their care for you was almost nonexistent.
You are sitting at the table, listening to your coach's speech on how proud your school is to have you go to the University of Iowa on a full scholarship to play soccer.
The ceremony ends and you see your parents talking with your principal who is showing them what they need to do. Before you know it, you see them walking out - without even a hello to you.
You run them as they walk out of the gym, catching them right on the other side of the door.
"Hey, you weren't even going to come and say hi?" You say as they just stand there looking at you. "I have a few people I want to introduce you to."
Little to your knowledge, Caitlin had run after you when she saw you go after your parents. She stopped when she heard you saying that you wanted to introduce them to people. She stayed on the other side of the gym door listening.
"You know we don't care about meeting anyone - the only reason we are here is because we were required to be in order to get you to leave come the fall." Your father says.
"This is already cutting into work day and the last thing we need is for you to take more of our time." Your mother says.
"It takes two seconds for you to meet them, that's it." You try and ration with them knowing it will only make things worse. But this is the closest you have ever been to making this happen and you know how much Caitlin wanted this.
"Oh trust us, there is no reason they would want to meet us, we have nothing to say about you.” Your mother says. "You have already caused us this headache of having to come out, now asking us to be social with people we care about less than we care about you. You should know us better than that by now to know we just don't care at all."
You swallow the anger and pain that is rising in your chest.
"Oh and about your senior night," your father begins. "Your principal mentioned that we should be there to walk you down the field but that doesn't seem important. Don't expect us to be there."
"Actually, if you could, make sure you are packed and moved out right after graduation. You're 18 and will be out of school therefore you are no longer our problem." Your mother says and it feels like you have just been stabbed in the chest.
Not that it came as a surprise to you but you didn't know where you would go or how begin to begin explaining this to Caitlin.
You just stare at them, not trusting your voice and they walk away.
You take the time you need to compose yourself - thinking through all the possibilities of where you could go after graduation. You feel like you have just been hit by a truck.
Caitlin, on the other side of the door, is now in tears. She is crying for you and hearing the words your own parents said to you. She is crying for all the times she has pushed you, trying to meet them or go and spend time at your house when really you were just protecting her from them. She is crying because she feels guilty for having such loving parents when yours are the polar opposite.
Cait knows you would be extremely embarrassed if you knew she had just heard the way your parents were talking to you so she gathers herself to the best of her ability and makes her way to her mom. Her mom notices how her little girl has broken down and asks what's wrong.
"They are terrible Mom, absolutely terrible," Caitlin begins. "They aren't going to her senior night. I doubt if they will go to her graduation and they are kicking her out the day after we graduate. How can someone's parents be so hateful towards their own child?" Caitlin is now sobbing in her mom's arms.
You finally collect yourself and enter the gym again. As you do you see Caitlin and her mom walk out. You head over to her dad as the plan was to head out to get a meal after the signing.
"Where did Cait go?" You ask as you take a seat next to him.
"Oh I think they just went to the restroom, they should be back right back," he says and you start a conversation with Caitlin's brother.
Caitlin's mom takes her out to calm her down. And they begin to plan how Caitlin and her family can help support you as your family fails to do so.
The next few days, you spend a lot of time at Caitlin's. You don't say why and Caitlin doesn't dare ask, already knowing. You don't tell her about your parents not going to your senior night, not wanting to cause any drama but as it rapidly approaches you dread it.
It wouldn't the first time a players parents were there, but you know for sure you would be the only one this season who walks out alone. Caitlin will be in the crowd and that is all that you need.
Your team gets ready and makes their way out to the field, excited to greet their parents. You are talking with some teammates as they begin to line you girls up.
The way they decided to do this senior night was by calling players by position and then finishing with captains. You would be going third to last - being the first captain called. It eases you a little knowing you will not be the last person on the field with no one walking to meet you in the center of the field.
The ceremony begins and they start calling girls names. You cheer on all of your teammates, holding your breath as you are the next one up.
Your eyes are closed as your head is down. An exhale escapes you as you hear your name called. What you heard next, gave you whiplash with how fast your head flew up.
"Our first team captain going to play for the University of Iowa on a full ride is met by parents Brent and Anne!"
Your eyes fill with tears, falling freely as you see them walk their way to meet you in the center of the field. As you walk you realize they called Caitlin's parents your own. In the seconds it takes you to walk to them, you reflect on how they have loved you and cared for you as their own. Even more so when Caitlin and you told them that you were dating. They had chosen to be your family not only in this moment, but over the last four years.
They meet you in the middle of the court, both are holding flowers for you. Caitlin's mom envelopes you into a hug and you melt into her, savoring the love of a mother's hug.
"We may not have raised you, but you are a part of this family. Today, tomorrow and always. We love you, baby," Anne says as she releases you and uses her sleeves to dry your tears.
You step over and hug Brent.
"We are so proud of you," he says with a smile. "We can't wait to watch you lead the Hawkeyes to the NCAA college cup."
You all walk down and they shake the hands of your coaches. Each one of your coaches has some sort of idea of what your parents are like thank Brent and Anne for showing up for you.
You later learn that one of your closer coaches would have walked out to greet you if the Clark's hadn't asked to do so. You don’t know how but you are incredibly thankful someone was watching out for you - a literally angel.
That night you lead your team to victory, scoring 3 goals, one of them in the last few seconds going into the half putting your team in the lead. The win was a sweet one to top off the night, not that you needed anything else to make this night better.
At the end of the game - Caitlin finds you on the field and you immediately pull her into a hug.
She holds you.
"Doesn't matter what the case, doesn't matter where you are. I got you babe. I've always got you." Caitlin says not letting you go, she refuses to let you go first and will hold you as long as you need.
AN: I hope this did your prompt justice, I thought it was cute. Let me know what you think! And as always, thank you for your love and support 🤍
𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙚𝙨 - 𝙘.𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙠
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: caitlin and yn are both rookies for the fever and hit it off immediately
-> ik cameron was second pick but let’s run with it for the story
𖦹 masterlist
“𝙒𝙄𝙏𝙃 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙁𝙄𝙍𝙎𝙏 𝙋𝙄𝘾𝙆 in the 2024 wnba draft, the indiana fever select caitlin clark.”
“with the second pick in the 2024 wnba draft, the indiana fever select yn yln.”
i clapped harder than ever when i heard caitlin’s name called for first pick. we’d played against each other in college, uconn vs iowa was the rivalry.
immediately after, i almost had a heart attack when they called my name. tears welled in my eyes as i walked up to the stage, had my photo taken with cathy and followed the security to where caitlin was.
she swept me up in a huge hug, squeezing me tightly.
“i knew you would make it. you always were the hardest to play against.”
she teased me as she released me from her grip.
“i didn’t think i’d make it, i wasn’t expecting to hear my name so soon.”
i tried to laugh but only ended up choking on my tears as i wiped them away. caitlin brought her hand up to my face to gently swipe away the remaining drops as she grinned down at me.
“at least we can play together at the fever.”
——
one month later
i walked into the indiana fever gymnasium, almost gawking at how big it was, and how decorated it was with accolades. many of the girls were already there and they all waved me over.
“welcome to the fever, yn. good to have you.”
erica wheeler greeted me, along with caitlin who was already there. she had come up behind me however, and slung her arm over my shoulders with a grin.
it was the first training session we had as a new team, so we started off with the basics.
i worked hard, trying my best not to disappoint anyone but most of all, myself. it took some effort but within a month of the season taking off, i was on the roster for the indiana fever. and just as everyone expected, caitlin was also in the roster.
we formed an easy link-up on the court, always nailing our passes and getting steals from our opponents. we were like the dream team.
it was a game day against the connecticut sun, one of the top teams. we knew it would be a hard game but i was confident we could do it if we tried our hardest.
when we arrived at the stadium before the game, me and cait walking in together as the paparazzi snapped photos of us and our outfits.
warm up started after that, and we were just shooting baskets. i was taking turns at shooting free throws with cait, and while she was lining up to take one i stood back and watched. i let my eyes memorise her face, her eyes, her mouth, her hair. she looked so pretty concentrated on the throw.
while i was letting my mind wander, cait took the shot and landed it perfectly. it was my turn and she snapped me out of my daydream. we continued shooting baskets for a bit then moved on, eventually going back to the locker rooms and gearing up for the game.
they announced the starters for each team, calling my name then caitlin’s, along with aliyah, nalyssa, and kelsey.
the first quarter started and it was game on. i immediately got on the ball, running it up the court to the basket and landing a shot. by half time we were up, 45-30, which was impressive for the fever.
it was just before the end of the game, the score was close and i knew that we had to put some distance between us and the suns. our coach called a break and we all jogged to the bench. caitlin and i found each other instinctively, and when the break was over we went back out there with renewed intensity.
in the five minutes left, i managed to get possession of the ball, run it down the court and pass out to caitlin who scored a three. then i did it again, stealing the ball back off a rebound and getting to caitlin who scored another three.
we worked hard the whole game to keep the score in favour of us. caitlin was basically pulling three-pointers out of her ass with the amount she had landed. when the ref blew the whistle for the end of the game, we all cheered loudly. it wasn’t an important game by any means, but it was a big win for the fever especially against one of the top teams.
i ran to caitlin and she pulled me into a hug.
“you killed that! ceo of three-pointers right here.”
i poke cait as she grins and shakes her head at me.
“nah i couldn’t have done that without your passes, they were fire.”
she nudges me back. neither of us leave each others side until we get back to the locker room. all the girls are talking about the win, and i’m running on an adrenaline high. the girls are all jumping and dancing around, shouting out to whatever music is playing on the speaker in the room. so i join in with cait, grabbing her hands and jumping around. it was an amazing vibe after a great win.
Sorry my tags got long and don’t even cover everything in the post 🏃🏾‍♀️
OP articulated everything here so well, sorry my tags got long and don’t even cover everything in the post 🏃🏾‍♀️
Tumblr media
@mdccanon I'm not sure what you are getting at. I never claimed that Mel was without flaws.
In fact, in my most recent post on her I specifically wrote:
Tumblr media
Also, Mel doesn't have a conquered nation? Just because she is an exiled citizen of Noxus. Nor does Noxus own Piltover and Zaun at this point. And reading kid!Mel trying to come up with a justification to save the live of the captured girl as "Mel is promoting manipulation against her conquered nations", I'm sorry, that is a pretty messed up take on 1.) a young child 2.) who clearly didn't have any say or else her mother wouldn't have done the opposite of what her kid just asked her for 3.) IMO clearly motivated by compassion and not "aha, I'm the Moriaty level master mind at at age 13 already and I have deduced that sparing the life of the other girl will indeed be more effective in subjugating!".
I'm also not saying that Mel is not using sneaky tactics. I actually said that I don't think that in season 1 Mel had an arc about NOT being manipulative. I say this because Mel in season 1, to me, never had a "oh shit, that blew up in my face" moment, the way let's say Jayce has when his violence gets a kid killed.
If Mel is a major character in season 2, I wouldn't except her to be anti politics/anti manipulation at this point. Mel to me sees manipulation/politics as a tool.
IMO she could still have an arc in season 2 where she realizes those tools are bad, but that to me is the case because she did not have this arc in season 1.
To me Mel in season 1 gets puts into situations where she doesn't particularly need manipulation and she adapts to it. But at this point, if faced with a situation where manipulation is useful, from her point of view, why shouldn't she use it when she has found it useful for some circumstances in the past? Again, there was no big "aha" moment in the show where using politics blew up in her face.
I guess the closest could be that Jayce goes rogue and takes over the council in ways she didn't intend to, but she doesn't react on that by swearing off Jayce or swearing off politics. Instead she sticks with him and actually teams up with him/subsigns his cause.
In the future, she could turn away from it if she has a "blow up in your face moment" that makes her think that manipulation is immoral. Or she could have a moment where she becomes disillusioned by politics and wants blood instead. Point being, that didn't happen in season 1, so Mel's season 1 arc was not about learning that manipulation is bad.
To me the climax of Mel's storyline in season 1 was her confrontation with her mother, where she stands against her mother and defends Piltover to her, which leads over into her supporting that Piltover should give Zaun freedom. (I actually think that that is an actually poignant and real feeling story, that sometimes immigrants can have a more rosy and idealistic view on a place and be more starry eyed about how a place should live up to its potential and "what it says on the tin") Within this arc to me Mel has a moment of weakness in that she slides into fear/Noxian thinking about the weapons, but through exchanges with Jayce and Viktor and through coming face to face with her mom and being reminded of what she dislikes about her mom and Noxus, she jumped out of Noxian/pro violence thinking again and (back?) into idealism. I don't think that that says anything about her stance on manipulation/flattery.
Other arcs I can see for her is that she learns to warm up more to Jayce and that she shares Heimer's arc of "they all realize that they've been ignoring the undercity".
I guess it's feasible that she could have her "oh, right, manipulation is bad" arc in seaason 2, but considering that she isn't the most major character and considering the themes of the season, I would put my money that if she has an arc like this at all, it might be more about "she gets scared off idealism and back into violence" again, after her support of Zaunite freedom literally blew up in her face. So the lesson she could draw from that could be "idealism and peace is wrong". I'm not sure how that would circle back to politics/manipulation for now.
Again, I'm sure it will depend heavily on how large a role both Mel or her mother have next season. Maybe Mel will spend most of next season in a coma while her mom tears apart the city. Maybe Mel's mom will get murdered within the first episode by Jinx or Warwick. Maybe both of them will have only small roles. Maybe they will continue the dynamic of Ambessa being the challenge Mel's idealism or the reminder of what she doesn't want to be, or maybe Arcane will try some more sneaky fliparounds. The sky's the limit. But to me, in season 1, Mel the character, the "person" did not have an arc about how manipulation is bad.
As a character we see Mel use manipulation mostly in relation to the other council members. I actually don't think that she uses particularly with Jayce. She sees him, she likes him, she sponsors him, she sexually approaches him imo because she wants to combine the useful with the fun and because they live in a setting where they have no concept of sexual harassment laws. I think she invites him into "her world" by showing him how the council ticks because to her that is a really cool thing she is teaching him, something that will help him live up to his potential, something she genuinely doesn't see as bad, something that she finds useful and is sharing with him.
Jayce then has his own "student supercedes the master" moment when he does things at the council which Mel didn't count on. Mel then overall spends more time with people like Jayce and Viktor where she doesn't need manipulation (compared to the council) and hence she stays away from it mostly.
I think she show was intentionally playing with the idea that Mel COULD be trying to manipulate Jayce, but I also think that after dangling the idea the show also comes hard down on the answer being "actually no, she doesn't". Or at least not in the truly devious "Actually Mel is spying for Noxus and waiting to sell Piltover out kind of way" kind of way.
Arcane is very, very in tune with the League of Legends fanbase, this was very clear based on all the promo and interviews they were doing with streamers and lore fans when the show started. IMO they were very aware that when they dumped the first hints of Mel being Noxian (though Mel's painting and later though the promos that showed Ambessa's guards) this would raise certain expectations within the League fanbase. Because League fanbase is conditioned to see Noxus as a place of bad news, of violence and conquering and evil spy cults.
IF Mel for example was spying for Noxus or working for the Black Rose that would give her a motivation to want to seduce Jayce and install him in the council for more insidious reasons as opposed to "she thinks he's kind hot and he shows a lot of promise and she wants to make a name for herself within Piltover". But this does not happen. Mel lacks the truly mastermind motive for manipulating him.
Mel's scene with Ambessa is her equivalent of Silco's scene where he offers to take responsibility of Jinx's crime with Jayce and the scene where he rants to the Vander statue.
The show intentionally plays with the idea "does Silco actually care about Jinx or is he coldly using her as a tool". The scene with Jayce shows that to Silco Jinx isn't just a tool to be discareded, he at the very least feels loyalty to her. While the scene with the Vander statue shows that he's deeply emotionally affected. (with Silco you can still debate whether on the whole he stil made Jinx's life worse despite his genuine attachment to her, but imo you can no longer claim that he was just coldly, indifferently using her)
In Mel's scene with Ambessa, there are not witnesses that she could be trying to impress with her defense of Piltover. It the scene that shows that she's loyal to Piltover, not Noxus. Again, meaningful if like the other loreheads you were expecting her to have been a spy all along or a Black Rose member.
Arcane loves subverting certain expectations. Many youtubers have made long videos about it. IMO Mel is part of that tradition. "We'll make the League fans think she's a Black Rose spy or working for Swain, but nope, actually her big secret is that she's the peaceful Noxian".
(and generally: yes, even if manipulating and politicing isn't great, it is indeed better than slitting people's throat (this is indeed non negotiable, people who are being politiked at least have a chance to wise up to that and resist, people who are dead don't have that option) and yes, even if Piltover is a place of assholes, being loyal to it is indeed superior to being loyal to Noxus which is an even worse place of assholes)
#I’m very late to this post but UGH#everything op presented and how they defended Mel reminds me so much of what the arcane fandom gets wrong#1. ARCANE SEASON ONE ISNT GONNA BE THE LAST SEASON DANG IT#some people give opinions on characters as if this is all they are and all they’re going to be#Mel is going to be a MAJOR STAPLE in season two and we are going to truly see her progress as a character#she’s flawed literally like everyone else and she has an arc we have yet to see but will most definitely witness#2. how we look at piltover characters vs how we look at silco#I’ve seen this happen with Cait a lot and I’m not super into the mel part of the fandom#but it’s the way that we have piltie characters trying to BE BETTER and they’re immediately shut down then hated for being a priveleged#piltie#genuinely have no idea what some people want from these characters#it’s as if they don’t want to see Piltover and Zaun reconcile#ive said that a million times but jeez#2.5 about Silco#silco is far from a saint we all know that#pretending like he was this stand up guy who only wanted the best for the Undercity takes so much away from his character#he was driven by resentment and anger and because of that he left so many people behind#I Will NEVER get over the way he sat and watched the people he apparently wanted to defend become addicted to the drug he co created#some say ‘well wouldn’t you make a drug to fight against a city that’s oppressed you for years’#that’s not what shimmer did#silco was in cahoots with the enforcers so that any problems related to shimmer were brushed off#it’s insane that the council KNEW about shimmer but it was so minimized in their eyes that they didn’t do anything about it#silco didn’t fight piltover he worked with them and became them in a way#the Chembarons was Zaun’s council and he controlled them (kind of)#overall mel had faults that we’re going to see throughout the show but like….. that’s the whole point ?#mel has flaws and traumas that we’ll get to see even more in-depth later on#that’s kinda the point of having….. characters#arcane#mel medarda#mel arcane
