saw a post yesterday (3 months ago now) that was like finale reactions from not-wincest shippers saying wincest won - but wincest shippers said it wasn't even wincest. which brings me around to my pondering how there's this divide of the ship into wincest / weirdcest / gencest which I'm still not totally sure the difference between the last two. but like, if I'm talking about wincest, I'm not talking about them with fucking required? it's just the dudes in a not-strictly-familial-platonic relationship. which to me, canonically, even in the most literal reading they've got a queerplatonic situation, so that qualifies

i think what i'm boggling over is that (sometimes?) the ship isn't the ship (the key is the key, man) it's like, ship+what they're doing with their dicks.

which led me to reading fanlore's gen and slash and smarm etc articles -> looked for a gencest article, reading the gen sam & dean one and the sam/dean one which is understandably packed with the related shipwar-ish stuff and i'm reminded i just. shouldn't read what anyone has to say about ships and this show. I feel like I'm rarely on the same page as anyone else, which is impressive in a fandom this large. i still don't really understand how the lines between them get drawn. but after all that i read, it sounds like people aren't really in agreement out there on the internet either.

so, this has been in my drafts since december and another post/reply got me to open it back up, someone saying if you want to tag the non-sexual situation it's gencest or weirdcest, not wincest. but I think now my personal understanding/interpretation is that those are just a subset of wincest, not standalone. I think another component of why it gets under my skin too is the inherent devaluation of queerplatonic relationships. a definition borne of the aromatic and asexual communities

and who's to say it isn't romantic? if the lines and beats are romantic, does it stop being so because they're brothers? would we have the same splitting up of the ship if they weren't related? (can guess what my answer would be)

ANYWAY. this was supposed to be how one ship has been split in a way I haven't seen before and find really weird. I can see how say, on tumblr, it's nice to have a tag that's just the qpr relationship, but not to the exclusion of the main ship.

I thought on AO3 it would be more clear cut, but of the 282 tagged with "Gencest | Emotionally Incestuous but Non-Sexual Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester" only 118 are tagged with Dean/Sam. and in the 79 works tagged "Weirdcest | Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester Appear Incestuous to Others Due to Lack of Boundaries", 40 are Dean/Sam.

and while I like the expansion of the tag name to include a definition, what even is emotionally incestuous :p and if there's incest in your definition, how does that not fall under the ship rubric

but being that there's 34,387 works tagged with Dean/Sam, and while there's more things tagged with gencest pre-2020, the majority is 2019+. and weirdcest is nearly exclusively 2021+. so, large consumer of fic that I am, I am sure things that would fall under those labels weren't tagged as such in the main tag.

going back to fanlore, the article about qprs:

but I think a lot of this, for me, circles back to what is a ship even, and why doesn't love for each other above all else+life partners qualify

and yet, look at me the hypocrite, because I tag stuff with "sam and dean" that are the canonical qpr things, but I wouldn't tag wincest because I know a lot of people would have it filtered. whereas anything remotely shippy in xfiles canon, I tag with msr. *facepalm*

and the advice/explanation I've received about tagging other people's posts, canon gifs, what have you; as wincest - that you might be putting their personal squick right in their notifications. so, don't do that! and I've internalized those rules.

and I guess there's plenty of people that watch the show and think they're just regular brothers ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I very rarely write angsty endings, so they're kinda notable when they happen: "Cold" (Eobard Thawne/Killer Frost, The Flash) (Very short but I've been told it packs a punch. 🥰😉) "Dark/Light" (chapter 1) (Harry Wells/Caitlin Snow, The Flash) (An experimental fic where the dialogue is exactly the same in ch1 and 2 but they tell vastly different stories. 😉) Honorable mention to "Gray Sunflowers" (Caitlin Snow/Hunter Zolomon, The Flash) as a rare one where the entire fic is a metaphor for depression and even though the ending isn't super angsty by any means, it also isn't particularly hopeful either. It's still one of my favorites, though, because I felt like it has a distinctive voice.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I'm resisting the urge to put "Side Effect" and the, er, multiple "happy endings" that occur in it here, lol! 🤣🤣🤣 Honestly, basically all of my other fics have a happy ending. I might go with "The Thousand and the First" (NSFW)(Eobard Thawne/Caitlin Snow, The Flash) because I wanted it to carry through a complete redemption arc for Eobard and I think it succeeded. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯😉

Do you get hate on fics? So far, no. On vids... oh yeah. 😑

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Um, yep. Lots. I tend to write smut with a funny tone. I've very rarely done a conventional "romance novel" type scene. "Balancing Act" (Ten/Donna, linked above) was one of the first I'd did with that quasi-realistic/funny tone to it.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I've only written one so far: "Cold Hands" (Caitlin Snow/Jordan Mahkent, The Flash/Stargirl), which also has a vid, "Gasoline."

What’s your all time favorite ship? To write? Any variation of Eobard Thawne/Caitlin Snow and the Wells dopplegangers/Caitlin or Killer Frost, The Flash, John-117/Kai-125 and John-117/Reader.

What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? "Try" (both versions of Eobard Thawne/Caitlin Snow, The Flash). I have 3 chapters completed and it's definitely the fic with the most world-building in it and it would also be the first full-fledged poly fic I've done. But my inspiration for the Flash just got smushed by the show so repeatedly I doubt I'll ever get enough oomph to finish it.

What are your writing strengths? Funny smut? Taking fandoms that are very not domestic and writing domestic fics in them? (I'm looking at you, Halo. Apologies to all of the Halo fans out there who absolutely hate people like me. 🫣I know you're out there but I appreciate you only vague-posting about me/people like me and not calling me out by name.)

What are your writing weaknesses? I don't write plotty fic very well, nor do I stick to canon very often. Worst thing is how easily I can sabotage myself and get convinced that everybody hates what I write. I've had SO many wonderful comments telling me otherwise but mannnnnn, my Evil Inner Editor can make me feel like the worst imposter ever. 😔

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I've written for Sherloque Wells a handful of times, most notably "Unrequited" (Sherloque/Caitlin, The Flash) but I had help from a genuine French speaker to make sure it was saying what I thought it was saying, lol! It's not something I would want to do a lot, though, because I don't have a good enough grasp on any other language to feel comfortable with it. I greatly admire those who can, though!

First fandom you wrote for? Lord of the Rings, though it's no longer online anywhere. Doctor Who was my official entrance in the awesome world of fanfic after that!

Favorite fic you’ve written? Well, ask me my favorite child, why don't you? 😮🤣 How about I pick one two that haven't been mentioned so far that I'd love to see get more attention? "Phase Two" (Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Doctor Who) is a sentimental fav and "Offer" (Eobard Thawne/Killer Frost, The Flash) is honestly a world I would've loved to have written more in because I found it so interesting.

THE BOYS / GEN V: khione has been injected with compound v much like her parents before her. she's got access to cryokinesis and hydrokinesis, though. she's currently enrolled in god u and, due to her parents, chose the crimson countess track despite the fact that she's got what it takes and actually wanted to try her hand at getting into the lamplighter track. while people called her freeze girl in high school, these days, her chosen hero name is frostbite.

INVINCIBLE: third gen with hydro/cryo abilities. goes to the same school as mark and samantha. declined an invitation to join the teen team and joined up with the stronghold six, which then turned into the stronghold seven.

MARVEL: mutant with hydro/cryo abilities. think iceman. (she wants to meet iceman so bad.) her parents wanted to send her to xavier's but ended up relenting when khione made it clear that she wanted to go to sky high and sky u (but that win came with a price).

the gifted: a mutant with hydro/cryo abilities. she's with the mutant underground and has made a sizable donation (it's not like her parents will miss the money.)

DC: metahuman with hydro/cryo abilities. think caitlin snow. except khione's had hers since birth. she has an undisputed love for ice heroes and ice villains.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY: has hydro/cryo abilities. her parents - who have similar powers - run in the same affluent circles as allison.

DESCENDANTS: a well known auradonian. daughter of two retired heroes (permafrost and ganga) who have been planning out her entire life. her parents have since retired and are now tv celebs.

TEEN WOLF: third gen ice (and water) elemental who has lived in beacon hills since forever. it doesn't take her that long to figure out that werewolves are a thing. she's not part of any pack but wouldn't balk at helping out if need be. has a soft spot for scott mccall and the mccall pack as a whole.

TWILIGHT: vampire who has a combination of hydrokinesis and cryokinesis as her special ability. comes from a long line of vampires with similar abilities.

FIRST KILL: legacy who comes from a long line of vampires with extra abilities: her dad is a cryokinetic and her mom is a hydrokinetic. khione has inherited both powers, which is great. she's also inherited their enemies, which is not so great.

TVD: third gen ice (and water) elemental who is around jeremy's age and has been posing as an ice witch so far. not really part of the mystic falls gang but wouldn't say no to helping them either.

THE ORIGINALS: third gen ice (and water) elemental who is wandering around new orleans in search of her friends.

LEGACIES: third gen ice (and water) elemental, starts out at mystic falls high but ends up transferring to salvatore's when her powers get exposed. thinks malivore is a dumb name. not part of the super squad or the anti squad but helps both out if need be. she mostly hangs out with the stronghold six (and when she joins the group as their seventh and final member, the name changes from the stronghold six to the stronghold seven).

COBRA KAI: khione is trying her best to stay out of the karate war, lest anyone finds out that she actually has powers. but her parents want her to get lessons from daniel, specifically, because he's so well known. khione would really rather not, though.

ONCE UPON A TIME: khione arrives in storybrooke much like elsa did in season four, turning storybrooke into a winter wonderland. the young elemental is only here for one thing and one thing only: finding her friends.

dammit hedgi day prompt: write a scene where yj wally wakes up star labs after having been pulled out of the speed force by cisco. caitlin and dr. wells are also there, and maybe wally realizes pretty quickly that something is Not Right Here.

One minute Wally had been running through a field of snow, hard-packed ice slick under his shoes from friction’s meltwater. The cold air had burned his lungs as the energy struck again, again, again, like lightning.  And then it was all gone, and he ran through a field of stars, instead. Wally stumbled, looking down where his yellow booted feet met nothing at all. He ran on for what seemed like forever. His legs, aching, never gave out as he ran through the lightning-struck darkness, alone. What happened to Bart? What happened to uncle Barry? What is this place? “Hey! Hey! Over here!” he turned towards the unrecognized voice, pitched desperate over distance, on instinct, though he wasn’t sure what he could do here.  Warm blue light radiated outward, blinding him to the caller. He reached out anyways. Somehow, Wally didn’t care what kind of rescue, or trap, or whatever this was, dismissing even the momentary fear that this was the light everyone said waited. If this storm was death, he wanted to be done, whether he was going back or…not. He just didn’t want to be alone in the dark. A hand locked around his, pulling him forward. * Everything from the soles of his feet to his scalp ached when he woke. He was on a hard, white-sheeted bed, surrounded by beeping machines and the smell of antiseptic and saline. A sense of deja vu hit him like a truck. “I didn’t mean to blow up the garage,” Wally croaked. A woman leaned over him, her hair a shade too brown to be his aunt Iris. “What?” “I told you he was a speedster,” the voice from the void, which apparently belonged to a man with long dark hair. “Cisco, we knew that from the suit,” the woman said. “I’m Dr. Snow. how are you feeling?” Dr. Snow sounded too familiar, but Wally couldn’t quite place it. “Uh. Just checking, I’m not dead?” “No, and we would know. Our machines can pick up even hearts going as fast as yours.” Dr. Snow said, tilting the bed up. “I’m still working on a reliable painkiller, though. Sorry.” “No worries, I’m used to it,” Wally said. He craned his neck. “ where am I, exactly?” it did not look like a hospital, or the watch tower, or any of the various safehouse medbays he had frequented before retirement. That, and the too-much-equipment-made-for-speedsters honestly started to fill him with more than a little dread. Probably not evil scientists who wanted to know how he’d gotten his powers, but probability was a bitch sometimes.  He could hear a couple people yelling out in the hall, and ignored Dr. Snow and his mystery rescuer’s questions. “I don’t care! We can’t trust him, you saw what he was wearing! Dr. Wells, it’s not safe.” Someone was seriously angry, in a scared kind of way. “Mr. Allen, I was not aware that evil had a monopoly on the color yellow.” A patient response came coupled with a sigh. “I--you know it’s not just that.” “Barry, if you’re upset that Mr. Thawne is still in this time, that should be discussed later. Right now, this takes priority over a murderer in the very secure basement.”

“Thawne?” Wally repeated, blinking. That was a name he knew way too well. The man who’d helped him leaped back, dropping the lollipop he’d apparently been about to offer and filling his hand with blue energy. “You’re a Thawne?” he asked, and wally shook his head fast. “No, I just heard--them arguing--Allen? Barry Allen?” his headache was easing by the moment.  “Uncle Barry?”

“Uncle?” Dr. Snow frowned, waving at the door as if gesturing for people to stop.“ Cisco, drop it. He’s an only child. Who are you, exactly?” Cisco, the rescuer, did not drop his fistfull of light. “Uh, West. Wally West,” Wally said, because if Barry was here the secret Identity thing was out anyways. “Iris’s nephew?” “Iris doesn’t have any nephews.” Someone from the hall came storming--literally, with sparks in his wake--in. “If you’re Iris’s nephew, why are you white?” Dr. Snow asked at the same time. “Oh my god, Caitlin, you can’t just ask why he’s white.” Cisco dropped the blue energy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to read #79 for the year- Daughter Of Hounds by Caitlin R. Kiernan.

A brilliant and action packed finale to her Deacon Silvey trilogy. This is a reread, and it gets better and better every time I read it. Kind of like a Kiernan’s greatest hits collection. The ghouls , Madame Terpsichore, The Bailiff, the underground labyrinth beneath Rhode Island’s Swan Point cemetery, The Children Of The Cuckoo, The Yellow House at 135 Benefit St, time manipulation, mini universes captured inside snow globes… all kinds of cool shit! Kiernan’s imagination and brilliant prose are on full display here. Can be read as a stand-alone, but my recommendation is to start with Threshold and then read Low Red Moon before tackling this. You will get so much more out of it. All three books are very different, and are all fantastic. As a matter of fact, go read everything by Caitlin Kiernan! 📚📚📚

💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

“Cold” (Eobard Thawne/Killer Frost, The Flash) is one of the very few fics that I’ve done that includes major character deaths and no happy ending. It’s also super short, barely a double drabble, but I was proud to have gotten comments that it still packed a punch.

The real answer, though, is that my heart is broken by the WIPs I don’t think will ever get finished. That truly makes me sad. 😕

💞 Who's your comfort character?

Present day, I find it very rewarding to write for John (aka Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, Halo), no matter the pairing.

I haven’t actually written John/Makee, btw, but I’ve used several of their scenes to make GIFs for “15 Minutes” (John/Reader) so that counts, right? 😁😇 Also, that soft little smile of his MELTS MY HEART. 😍😍😍 I adore this big Spartan Boi SO MUCH.

Overall, though, my comfort character to write for for the past 7 years is Eobard Thawne (The Flash).

“He’s so tall and handsome as hell, he’s so bad but he does it so well...” could’ve been written for these Murder Bois, what can I say? I’ve written for both versions, though Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard has the lion’s share. Weirdly, though, I do feel a definite difference in writing Matt Letscher’s Eobard, so I hope that has come across in the fics he’s starred in.

I’m not sure why my comfort characters, the ones I find it easiest to fall into their voice, are all male. 🤷‍♀️ (I do truly love writing for Kai, for my “15 Minutes” Reader, for Caitlin and Frost, though, so I hope I’ve been able to do them all justice over their respective fics. 🤞😣🤞)

💋 First kiss fics. Love em or hate em?

Loooooove, most definitely! I’ve written a ton of them by now, though I do occasionally like to write established relationships.

First first kiss fics: “Proper Motivation” (part 2 of the Partners In Crime series, I recommend starting with the first fic in the series, “By Any Other” if you’d like to check it out but hey, you do you, and I support you in that, 😉 Caitlin Snow/Eobard Thawne, The Flash) and “Answer Enough” (Kai-125/John-117, Halo). 🤗

Oh heck yeah, I do, lol! Most popular in the three fandoms I’ve written the most in would be (all of these are, of course, NSFW 😉) “Balancing Act” (Donna Noble/The Tenth Doctor, Doctor Who), “The Thousandth and the First” (Caitlin Snow/Eobard Thawne, The Flash) and “Side Effects” (John-117/Cortana, John-117/Kai-125, Halo).

Honorable mentions to “Elevated” (Killer Frost/Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher version), The Flash) and “(In)vulnerable” (Eobard Thawne/Reader, The Flash) for being the first extremely explicit fics I wrote, even if they’re not the most popular. 😉 (There would’ve been no “Side Effects” without those two first. 🥵😂😉)
