WRITERS - Read More Nonfiction! (With Recs)

Okay so before I start I'm making it very clear that I don't say this as some generalized statement about how All Online People Aren't Reading Right. I doubt that's true! But based on some of the threads and discourse I see on my corner on Writeblr, it definitely seems like a lot of you would greatly benefit from expanding the scope of what you read.

I think there's probably a big stigma against nonfiction for a lot of people - there was for me for the longest time. Maybe six years ago, though, I stumbled into the genre and found that it can actually be rad as shit. It's been an invaluable form of research from people who definitely know what they're talking about, as well as a way to open myself up to new ideas.

You have chronic writers block? It could potentially be because you're consuming exclusively one genre of media. If that's the case, this will definitely get the gears turning!

Below are a collection of my favorite nonfiction books from my own shelf. The funny thing I immediately learned about suggesting more than like three nonfiction books at a time is that it does paint a kind of intimate picture of who I am. Feel free to tell me if these recommendations surprise you based on who you view me to be.

Clove's Favorite Nonfiction Books!

The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth by Thomas Morris - a collection of historical medical cases back when someone would see a doctor for a gunshot wound and the doctor would treat it with a laxative. WILD stuff.

American Monsters by Linda S. Godfrey - US cryptids! Lots of first person accounts.

Cursed Objects by J. W. Ocker - Famous cursed shit. Quick read but very fun.

The Cloudspotter's Guide by Gavin Prector-Pinney - this was written by the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, a real organization. It tells you everything you need to know about clouds. Fascinating.

Gory Details by Erika Englehaupt - stories and studies of more morbid and "gross" aspects of science, like the guys who stung themselves with instincts to measure the pain or that beach that feet kept washing up on for a while. Cool interviews with science people.

Fuzz by Mary Roach - wild animals break the law a lot actually and we still as a species don't really know what to do about that.

Spook by Mary Roach - an account of Ghost Believing from all sides of the argument. There was a guy who measured dying bodies to see if he could see them get lighter as their soul escaped.

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimberly - an indigenous-influenced look at our relationship as a species to nature around us. Really beautiful prose from someone who I believe is primarily a botanist and activist?

All the Living and the Dead by Hayley Campbell - stories and analysis from different aspects of the death industry! Embalmers to crime scene cleaners! Super interesting!

American Afterlives by Shannon Lee Dawdy - I have. A lot of death culture books. A lot. This one talks about all the neat things people in America do with their bodies after they die in the modern age. It's fun!

Dark Archives by Megan Rosenbloom - so this IS a book on the history of Anthropodermic bibliopegy, or books bound in human skin. I'm actually midway through this now and it's super fascinating and cool. Also my wife refuses to talk to me about this so I'd love someone else to talk to.

The Secret Lives of Color by Cassia St. Clair - I read like four books on color theory and pigment for a novel I wrote a few years ago and this was my favorite. It's a look into a ton of major hues and pigments throughout history as well as a peek into the timeline of color making. Did you know making green fabrics used to be illegal?

Atlas Obscura - a fucking cool look into weird and unique spots across the globe. Every artist who works with places should have access to this. It's awesome.

Every Caitlin Doughty book they're all great. She's a modern mortician and founder of the Order of the Good Death. Just an incredible human being and a super engaging and informative writer.

Transfem authors of fiction: a list

I wrote a version of this list in Swedish for a meatspace friend, figure I might redo it for a tumblr audience. The books recommended are usually novels, and in case of prolific authors, the one recommended is usually the most successful and acclaimed one. I haven't read all of these, but I'm working on it. The list is in alphabetical order after the author's last name. I added some notes to the list, to introduce the authors and their books.

Nota Bene this list is based on my personal research, and largely reflects my own tastes in fiction, as in what I've read and considered reading. And it is of course not at all complete. And it's a transfem authors list, so no transmasc authors no matter how worthy. And it's about authors of fiction, not memoirs or non-fiction. So no Christine Jorgensen, even if she wrote a book I want to read. And Jan Morris gets in based on her two Hav novels, not her more prolific non-fiction work. Links are to my reviews on this blog if they exist.

Anders, Charlie Jane - SF/F writer, debuted with Choir Boy (2005), but most famous for All The Birds in the Sky (which won a Nebula).

Aoki, Ryka - her latest sf/f novel Light from Uncommon Stars is her most popular, but she has published both fiction and poetry before.

Becker, Saga - Våra Tungor Smakar våld (Swedish author, her book is untranslated, although quite good)

Binnie, Imogen - Nevada

Daniels, April - Dreadnought and its sequel Sovereign. Novels about a teenage trans girl superhero.

Deane, Maya - Wrath Goddess Sing

Felker-Martin, Gretchen - Manhunt (horror novel)

Kaveney, Roz - Tiny Pieces of Skull (also wrote the Rhapsody of Blood fantasy series, plus numerous poetry collections and non-fiction)

Kiernan, Caitlin R. - Usually categorized as a horror author, written numerous novels and short stories since her debut novel SIlk in 1998. The most acclaimed are probably her novels The Red Tree and The Drowning Girl (which won the Bram Stoker Award)

Leitz, May - Fluids and Girlflesh (review forthcoming)

Morris, Jan - Hav (mostly wrote non-fiction, history books and travel literature, Hav is an omnibus of her two novels about Hav, both "imagined travelogues" about a fictitious country)

Peters, Torrey - Detransition Baby

Plett, Casey - Little Fish (Lambda award winner)

Pollack, Rachel - Prolific writer of several kinds of books, including a pioneering career as a sf/f writer. Did her fictional debut with a short story in a 1971 anthology (credited under her deadname) and published her first novel Golden Vanity in 1980, which are literally the earliest pieces of fiction by an out trans person (not memoir or non-ficton) I've been able to find. So very much a pioneer. Her most acclaimed book is probably Godmother Night (1996) which won the World Fantasy Award. Also wrote comics, most notably Doom Patrol.

Rumfitt, Alison - Tell me I'm Worthless

Serano, Julia - 99 Erics (her debut as a novelist after years of pioneering transfeminist writing and poetry)

I'm writing Flash (TV) fic and reading Dracula Daily and so here's a Flash Dracula AU that I'm not going to write:

(Warnings: Major Character Death, Child Death, Bad Doctoring. It's a Dracula AU)

Casting:

1. Kamilla Hwang as Mina Murray

Our opening character, currently holidaying in [Whitby] with a dear, dear friend of her fiancé who should be joining them any day now, but he doesn't seem to be sending any letters...

2. Caitlin Snow as Lucy Westenra

Wanted a nice relaxing time at the seaside really getting to know her bestie's new fiancée and thinking about her own upcoming wedding, but her mother is clearly trying to hide something and her own fiancé's father is ill and her best friend appears to be missing and now she appears to have fallen back into her old sleepwalking ways...

3. Cisco Ramon as Jonathan Harker

Kamilla's fiancé and recently made a full solicitor. This will be an easy first job they told him. Travel overseas, get some signatures on this paperwork, he'll be home in no time.

He has been having The Worst Month

4. Ronnie Raymond as Arthur Holmward

Caitlin's fiancé. Loves her so much. Would be with her but his dad's not been doing so well

5. Julian Albert as Quincey Morris

Adventurer. Ronnie's old bud. Also in love with Caitlin but just really, really happy for his friends. Down to shoot a bat.

6. Hunter Zoloman as Jack Seward

There's got to be a twist somewhere, right? He's the head of an asylum. He should not be in charge, really, especially not with that one patient he's dubbed his 'favourite'. Also in love with Caitlin. Bitter she did not choose him. But there's an idea for how to change their fates...

7. Iris West as Abraham Van Helsing

Not a doctor but a journalist, Iris has ended up studying local legends and mythic creatures ever since the loss of her daughter and the rapid decline in her husband's health. She's something of a vampire expert- not that she believes in them, but understanding might give her a way to help her husband. She did not expect it to actually be practical knowledge, but then she hears from Zoloman about the state of his friend Caitlin and maybe there's some truth to the tales after all

8. Barry Allen as Renfield

The latest patient admitted to Zoloman's asylum and his latest source of fascination, Barry is convinced his mother was not murdered by his father but by some monstrous creature she managed to save eleven-year-old Barry from, but one he could not save his own daughter from, and Barry has sworn revenge. Probably has some pet spiders. He gets lonely. Doing some dubious science in his cell. Also gets bored and really, really wants to kill this one guy.

9. Eddie Thawne as Patrick Hennessey

Actually takes good care of everyone in the asylum. Feels bad for Barry. Hopefully someone will promote him when Zoloman winds up dead. Knows a little more than he's letting on

10. And, of course, Eobard Thawne as Dracula

A massive dick

Notes:

We get the reveals as Kamilla does- so what happened to Cisco at Castle Thawne when she reads Cisco's journal, what happened to Caitlin when she gets to read the notes, ect.

This includes the reveal Hunter Zoloman is the one working for Thawne

He's the one who lets Thawne into the asylum to go after Cisco- who was left behind out of concern for his mental health

Luckily Eddie had the bright idea to enlist Barry's help when he figured out what was going on

Zoloman had to bright idea to think Thawne would a) make him immortal and b) make Caitlin immortal and c) this would mean she'd pick him instead of Ronnie

Only Iris knows what this mysterious new "Killer Frost" wandering the nights is and stops her before she can kill anyone, with help from Ronnie and Julian

Barry does fight Thawne and gets very injured for his troubles. This means he's left behind with Eddie when the gang go on a "let's track down Eobard Thawne and murder him" quest, but he does live (it seems unfair for Iris to lose Nora and Barry)

Zoloman's like super dead though. Eobard kills him so he doesn't let any secrets slip not realising Zoloman went and recorded everything in his diary.

Caitlin's dead too. Sorry. Maybe she can be a ghost

We’re still enjoying our stay on Deep Space Nine after a great week of chilling with our favorite DS9 minor and one-off characters last week. This week, there’s a tussle at Quark’s as we’re about to go toe-to-toe with the best villains, antagonists, or general scallywags of the station-bound series. We did it before with our favorite baddies from TOS and from TNG, so who are the biggest bads this time around?

There’s a lot of competition for this one, but some of the picks are obvious because Deep Space Nine just put so much time and effort into making its characters believable, motivated, and always incredibly well developed. Chris – Bring out the big guns

Chris is highlighting the heaviest hitters of all of Deep Space Nine, and for good reason! We get the most of these frequently recurring guest stars, and every time we see them, they are consistently compelling and compellingly consistent. From the deliciously acerbic religious leader who serves only herself, to the utterly deluded leader in the Cardassian ranks who is convinced he’s always in the right, to the simple tailor who is capable of some really, really diabolical stuff, these three are examples of how to write naughty characters well.

Caitlin – Scum of the earth… er, space

On Caitlin’s list, we’re going to get some characters who just leave a nasty taste in your mouth, but you’ll keep coming back for seconds. These three are just slimy individuals who commit some really atrocious things and all get exactly what’s coming to them. We see the kai who takes out her irritation that the prophets don’t talk to her on an entire people, the Vorta middle manager who gleefully lets all of his troops get slaughtered as long as they saved him first, and the megalomaniacal Klingon Chancellor who started rewriting history in his favor.

Jake – Same face, different day

Jake went with some characters we see a little less, though we see some of their faces pretty much every week. Let’s start off with the mirror universe equivalent of Major Kira, who may not be the best villain, per se, but she is the most entertaining to watch. We also see a slightly different take on Odo from an alternate timeline, with a slightly more believable face and much more capacity for freakin’ genocide. Finally, a familiar face from Jake’s Top Ten Worst Admirals blogpost who seems to love declaring martial law… when he’s not a Changeling, that is.

On my list are three villains whose side you can almost convince yourself to take, if it weren’t for all the constant murdering. My love for everyone’s favorite swaggering lizard man is well documented, but it’s so easy to be taken in by all that charisma, confidence, and neck. I have to share a little love for a Vorta who just seems so reasonable while she’s negotiating with you… until you realize she’s absolutely not to be trusted. And finally, my favorite Jem’Hadar who, in a different reality, we could have called friend, played by Phil Morris to boot!

2024 MAD Design Fellows announced

Since its launch in 2022, the MIT Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) has supported MIT graduate students with a fellowship, allowing recipients to pursue design research and projects while creating community. Pulling from different corners of design, they explore solutions in fields such as sustainability, health, architecture, urban planning, engineering, and social justice. 

On May 1, MAD announced the 2024 cohort of Design Fellows at the MIT Museum.

Meet the MIT MAD 2024 Design Fellows Video: MIT Morningside Academy for Design

Sofia Chiappero, MCP student in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and MITdesignX affiliate: Chiappero is working around the intersection of community development and technology, aiming to address the challenges faced by underserved communities at risk of displacement in Latin America. Through a blend of social science and digital inclusion, she seeks to design a new approach to researching human interactions and replicating them in virtual settings, with the ultimate goal of preserving the identity of these communities and giving them visibility for resilient growth.

Clemence Couteau, MBA candidate in the MIT Sloan School of Management: Couteau is tackling the rise of postpartum depression among U.S. mothers by aiming to develop a digital solution empowering at-risk pregnant women to improve mental health outcomes. This involves a self-directed therapy chatbot in a mobile app, based on the “ROSE” protocol.

Mateo Fernandez, MArch student in the Department of Architecture: Fernandez explores how to depart from the current construction industry, designing alternatives such as growing buildings with biomaterials, and deploying advanced 3D printing technologies for building.

Charlotte Folinus, PhD candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering: Folinus creates new methods for designing soft robots, using these tools to design soft robots for gentle interactions, uncertain environments, and long mechanical lifetimes. “I am really excited to be surrounded by people who can do things I cannot. That’s when I’m the best version of myself. I think that’s the community I’ll find here,” she says.

Alexander Htet Kyaw, master’s student in the Department of Architecture and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and MITdesignX affiliate: Htet Kyaw’s current research utilizes robotic assembly, multimodal interaction, and generative AI to challenge conventional manufacturing and fabrication practices. He is working on an AI-driven workflow that translates design intent into tangible objects through robotic assembly.

Dení López PhD candidate in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning: As a Design Fellow, López uses design research to evaluate and extend the scope of Bicheeche Diidxa’, a long-standing Participatory Action Research initiative for disaster resilience focused on five Zapotec communities along the Los Perros River in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Caitlin Morris, PhD candidate in media arts and sciences: Morris’s research explores the role of multisensory influences on cognition and learning, and seeks to find and build the bridges between digital and computational interfaces and hands-on, community-centered learning and teaching practices.

Maxine Perroni-Scharf, PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Perroni-Scharf is currently working on developing techniques that enable the discovery and design of extremal metamaterials — 3D printed materials that exhibit extreme properties arising not from their chemical composition, but rather from their structure. These can be applied to a variety of tasks, from battery design to accessibility.

Lyle Regenwetter, PhD candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering: Regenwetter develops methods to incorporate design requirements, such as safety constraints and performance objectives, into the training process of generative AI models.

Zane Schemmer, PhD candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Schemmer’s research aims to minimize the carbon footprint of the built environment by designing efficient structures that consider the availability of local materials.
