Random Facts About Alec Marrs:

He is completely deaf! He communicates with sign language and writing notes in a notebook he carries around

Tobi taught himself sign language so he can easier communicate with Alec, and Alec is teaching Rory

Alec is the one who turned Rory into a werewolf and got him a job at the bookstore

While in his wolf form, Alec is a large, thick wolf with curly, light brown hair. He has very thick fur, and he remains deaf in this form

Alec no longer communicates with his family

He chooses to be mute

Alec loves cooking dinner for those he cares about!

He is about 5'6"

Alec has a bit of a thicker build, and he also has moles scattered on his skin

He has two siblings but has no contact with either of them

Prospecting for Performances @SPARCsymposium #Cobalt2018

If you know your “Voyageur periodic table” you’ll know that a piece of silver from the famed Beaver Mine in Cobalt Ontario is inlaid into the centre of the first fret. And if you already know that, you may also know it’s partly there to reflect the importance of what has been called “Ontario’s Most Historic Town” and partly there because of my own deep connection to Cobalt. It’s the town where my grandfather was mayor and provincial MPP, the town where my dad was born, the town where my cousins still live and the area where the whole extended family shares a cottage – just down the road at Bass Lake – where we’ve been coming since we were babies.

So it’s always very special to be able to make the presentation in Cobalt and even more special to work again with Felicity Buckell – a gentle but powerful and persistent force for developing cultural capacity and cultural demand in this community – this time as the local organizer of the SPARC Symposium, a gathering of remote and rural community arts presenters from around Ontario. Back in 2014, Felicity and I collaborated on building what I consider to be the gold standard of integrated education/outreach/community programming – including school presentations at local French, First Nations and English schools, songwriting workshops, community presentations and portraits – with her Pied Piper Kidshows organization, which was also a sponsor of this symposium.

Our activities with the symposium included participation in a panel (with Jack Langenhuizen of the Motus O Dance Company) at one of our favourite local haunts, the Chat Noir Book Store Cafe in New Liskeard; a presentation at the coolest bar in Northern Ontario, the Miner’s Tavern (our third presentation there over the years – a record) and portrait sessions at both the Miner’s and at SPARC HQ at the Community Hall (a former YMCA facility above what are now the town offices).

In truth, turnout of SPARC delegates at the Miner’s presentation was a bit disappointing but the crowd was fleshed out with locals and some visiting prospectors who were in the area prospecting for the mineral cobalt – much in demand these days for use in rechargeable batteries such as the ones used in Tesla and other electric vehicles. As you know, people come forward with the most amazing connections to the project at pretty much every presentation I do and this one was spectacular. One of the members of the prospecting team, Kevin Tateishi, approached me during the portrait sessions after the presentation and let me know the player with his arms folded second from the left in the bottom row of the 1941 team photo of the Vancouver Asahi baseball club that comes up in my presentation was his great uncle Ken Kutsukake. Just amazing!

Also amazing was having lead prospector Jessica Bjorkman bring some tools and cobalt-rocks into the photos AND finally getting a bunch of portraits with one of our favourite Cobalters, Miner’s proprietor and local councillor Rochelle Schwartz!

The “performance pocket” segment of the presentation was beautifully filled with original songs by Robyn Dewar, John Shymko (who also saved the day with the loan of his portable sound system!) and Temagami songwriter Dave Laronde taking his third turn on Voyageur over the years and proving yet again that there are some powerful songs and stories being told in this part of the country. After the show, as we were setting up for the portraits, Kevin Closs (in town for SPARC) did his extraordinary acoustic arrangement of “O Canada” for what was perhaps the 10th time over the years on Voyageur; local songwriter Alec Morrison covered a Grievous Angels tune in honour of local MP Charlie Angus (also speaking at SPARC on Cobalt’s vaudeville era in the boom-town years) and a young man (10? 12?) named Tanner Montgomery (pictured) – who travelled with his family from Thunder Bay to see the show, carrying his own electric guitar as an accessory, no less. Tanner got up on stage and wowed everybody with a passionately rendered fully acoustic version of the Tragically Hip’s “Grace, Too”.

Thanks to all the musicians, to Rochelle for her always perfect hospitality and to everyone who came out to see the show. Thanks to portrait station volunteers Peter & Lara Zwarich (at the Miner’s) and Kevin Closs and Jake Koza (at the Community Hall). Tobi: By supporting a musical artist that's been cancelled. Most of the time, he doesn't keep up on celebrity drama, and even if he knows that a musician he likes is problematic, he's gonna enjoy their music anyways.

Corbin: He'd probably say something super out of pocket with no context like "Sometimes I wish I could throw children in a river" just because one cut him in line at the store or something. And he would not elaborate on what he means.

Stephen: Stephen is the king of toxic positivity. He believes that if people are unhappy, then they're probably doing something wrong and just need to try harder. So he'd probably post something that could seem like he's very dismissive of mental health and the struggles that come with it. He's just oblivious to those things since he personally doesn't struggle with them.

Alec: Alec would probably make a post calling a celebrity or something out for problematic behavior (with proof of it), and that celebrities' white knights will try to pounce on him for it.

Silas: Silas's interests may involve material that others could find problematic or has problematic elements (certain anime or games with very sensitive subjects). So he might post something about it or a cosplay he did from it and someone would be like "uhm, doesn't [insert anime/game name] glorify [sensitive topic]?" and he'd be like "idk fuck off"

Rory: I can't really see Rory getting cancelled for anything other than by a misunderstanding.

Armen: She would post about the benefits of weed and whatnot, and people would come at her and say it's dangerous and she's spreading propaganda or something.

Ji-Ho: She'd probably dox someone for being homophobic.

Marina: She likes older literature (which a lot have some controversial topics or content), so she'd post about a book and someone would try and say she supports racism or whatever just because she likes "To Kill a Mockingbird" or something.

Anastasia: She doesn't use social media.

Tate: If someone acts like a dumbass or a creep, he'll post about them publicly. He doesn't care if he's ruining someone's reputation, don't be stupid or a weirdo. (Especially because they get the occasional weirdo at the cafe who hits on the girls)

Did Rory Want to Become a Werewolf?

Okay, so Rory is actually the only one of the werewolves who wasn't turned into one by Stephen! He was actually changed into one by Alec, but it was a complete accident.

Rory had freed Alec from a bear trap while walking in the woods when Alec was in his wolf form. Alec was panicked and lashed out and scratched and bit Rory before running off.

When Alec was back to his human form, he talked with Stephen about what happened, and they found Rory and explained things to him, and Rory was a little hesitant to believe at first, but then believed them.

So even though Rory was turned into a werewolf on accident, he quickly accepted it and was actually really excited to be part of the pack! He was accepted into a close-knit group and given a job at the bookstore. He's really happy where he is now, even if it was due to a total accident.

Sleeping with the babes:

ARMEN: Armen is all about physical touch. She's gonna be all over you and cuddled against you in a sea of blankets. She'll probably wanna steal one of your shirts and she'll be in that and a pair of panties and nothing else. She's probably gonna be all sprawled out on top of you at some point.

RORY: Rory is super shy, so he'll be a bit hesitant at first, but he would love to be the little spoon! He's really long and has super long legs so your legs are gonna get tangled at some point.

ANASTASIA: Ana is really weird about physical touch due to some trauma, so at first she'll be sleeping on the complete opposite side of you. But in the middle of the night, she'll keep scooting closer and closet until she has her arms gently wrapped around you.

AUGIE: Augie is gonna wanna hold you close. He's actually an incubus, so he's also super warm and he has a tail, which he'll wrap around whatever part of you he can get to.

ALEC: Alec is a little cuddle bug, he's gonna hold you and run his fingers through your hair and mouth sweet names to you. (He's mute so he doesn't speak other than through notes and mouthing things)

Bathtime with the babes:

ARMEN: Armen is gonna splash you with water and her feet are gonna end up all in your face because she'll wanna be on opposite ends of the tub. She'll probably try to smoke in the tub but then dramatically sob when she drops her pipe into the tub.

RORY: Rory will be super super flustered and embarrassed. He's pre-op trans, so he would be really hesitant about showing his body to you, but with some encouragement, he'll happily bathe with you and he'll want a lot of bubbles!

ANASTASIA: Anastasia will be shy about showering herself to you, but once she gets over her nervousness, she'll wanna lay on top of you and just cuddle in the warm water. She might doze off on you though.

AUGIE: Augie is gonna want all the candles and bubbles and soothing music, and honestly he'll probably end up getting horny and wanna fool around in the tub.

ALEC: Alec will wanna take care of you and wash you, then let you wash him. He'll be gentle and give you little kisses all the time, and he'll caress your face and make you feel special.

ARMEN MOORE: ODing alone in a house she was squatting it. This led to her becoming a vampire.

JI-HO CHEONG: Practically dying in a car crash with her little brother in the car. This led to her becoming a vampire.

MARINA TORRES: Getting stabbed while she was being robbed walking home one night. This led to her becoming a vampire.

ANASTASIA PARK: Her father's abuse and him taking advantage of her to the point where she nearly died. This led to her becoming a vampire.

TATE ANDREWS: Watching his wife and 8 year old daughter get slaughtered by vampires.

OWEN WOODS: Seeing his partners die when the three of them got snowed in in a cabin and they died from the elements.

AUGIE FISHER: When his wings were cut off when humans discovered he was a demon.

**Note: The reason why I put "this is what led them to becoming a vampire" is because these events for the characters pretty much killed them. But Tate found each of them and turned them into vampires to give them a second chance at life.**
