The queen paused when he asked her to repeat herself. "Pregnant." She said. When she'd fled Atlantis she had ended up in the Winter Court of all places. Most would have thought she'd be happier in the Summer Court because of the ocean. But she could hide better in the Winter Court.

☕️while I'm glad that neither Arthur or Atlanna had signed off on Orm's torture (which I was legitmately concerned about before seeing the film), it's still not great that they apparently hadn't once tried to find out where he was, given that both of them had expressed in the first film that they wanted to talk to him, get through to him especially Arthur. And I know this was partly down to COVID shutting down production and then the DCEU ending, but it's still something that doesn't sit right.

Yeah, that was all... really weird to me. From a strictly political point of view of course they shouldn't question it but like... how did they think he was being treated? They knew he was handed over to the Fishermen kingdom, and it seems like they even knew he was being held on land. How on earth was he supposed to contact Arthur to have a little chat when he's imprisoned by a kingdom that hates him, guarded by vampires, in the middle of a desert?

Besides no Atlantean does well without water. Being deprived of water is pretty much pure torture, and by moving him to the desert the Fishermen very clearly plan to not let him have water? Did Atlanna/Arthur really believe that he was gonna get treated at all well? Of course the Fishermen are gonna hate him and blame him for anything that went down. Of course he's going to be treated horrendously.

From a strictly political viewpoint of course it wouldn't make sense to cause a ruckus over Orm's treatment, and Orm was very much on the "I deserve this its my duty to Atlantis to just suffer" so it may have been a moot point but like. Why is Arthur so resentful to him by the second movie? It just seems odd.

Anything to say on Aquaman ? Especially nowadays after the clumsy Kaldh'ur push killed the franchise and left Arthur without a series ?

Highest grossing DC movie ever and DC managed to completely kill the franchise.

Hasn't had a book in years, and we don't know when if ever he'll get another one. No DCU Aquaman rumors, his animated miniseries got removed from MAX presumably for a tax write-off, and there's seemingly nothing in the works for him any time soon. Not since the GL movie bombed at the box office have I seen a franchise fall off as suddenly as Aquaman has. He should be an easy character to sell, a warrior-king married to a waterbending assassin-queen, with 71% of the Earth to cover all by himself. Arthur is an extremely flexible character who is suited to a wide range of stories. He can be a wild Conan esque hero, the barbarian hero imposing some measure of order on the seabed wilderness. He can be a regal figure, King Arthur ruling over underwater Camelot and protecting the realm from threats. He can be the star of murky Game of Thrones politicking regarding the throne of Atlantis. He can be about family drama, his mother ditching him, his dad frequently dead, his half-brother often serving as his enemy, his wife having tried to kill him and her side of the family continuing attempts to assassinate him.

Yet DC has seemingly given up on him for now. Not so Harley Quinn whose comic sales appear to be just as awful and whom starred in several high profile flops across multiple mediums recently. People bitch about the New 52 but that era was a Golden Age for Aquaman. For the record, every moron on social media who whines about Johns tackling all the stupid memes surrounding Aquaman head-first as being the wrong approach, only outs themselves as a midwit.

Sales proved Johns had the right approach. Aquaman became cool after the Johns run. Various other writers from Peter David to Kurt Busiek had attempted to rehabilitate Aquaman and their efforts failed for a variety of reasons, but my personal opinion is they failed because they tried to pretend Aquaman's bad reputation didn't exist. They weren't willing to address the criticisms head on, instead opting to bury their heads in the sand, or have Arthur beat up more popular characters to increase his own standing. Aquaman in the New 52 worked because Johns had Arthur all but look directly at the readers and say "shut the hell up, forget all the dumbass memes for a second, and watch this." Shockingly, it worked!

Chalk it up to prime Johns' ability to make any C-Lister appealing to readers, or that a bunch of new readers jumped on with the New 52, but Aquaman ran for 52 consecutive issues. Not feeling optimistic about any Aquaman book repeating that feat anytime soon. Feel free to rate Jeff Parker’s follow up run as superior in terms of storytelling, I think it’s fantastic myself, and it does make Atlanna an interesting character rather than the cliche dead parent, but we never would have gotten Parker’s run without Johns. He built the fanbase to support the book. Wan's first movie owes a great deal to Johns, the same spirit of swashbuckling fun that made the movie connect is present within his run, and anyone who attempts to claim he deserves no credit isn't worth listening to.

Like it or not, there was a misguided attempt to de-emphasize Arthur as the lead character as part of the disastrous push for legacies during Infinite Frontier. Young Justice Kaldur was my second favorite character after Superboy, yet I don't feel the same affection for Earth 0 Kaldur. He was barely Arthur's sidekick before they tried to make him Aquaman, and the attempt to reform Black Manta was a terrible creative direction. Tempting as it might be to lay all the blame on Kaldur, I don't think it's only his fault. We got a BL Aquaman book by Ram V where Arthur plays side protagonist to a bunch of OCs, with the expected result of said book flopping. Aquaman is not a franchise strong enough where you can sideline the titular character or use him to prop up other characters, a fact that the Black Panther franchise has also struggled to accept post Chadwick's death.

DC needs to get their collective head out of their ass and give Arthur another push. No sharing the mantle, no fighting over the Throne of Atlantis for the 50th time, let's try something else. If they don't have faith in a mainline Aquaman title, at least put out an Absolute Aquaman book. This is no way to treat the guy who gave you the highest-grossing DC film ever.

So, when Shalako creates the dome around Tritonis, they are pretty clear about continually referring to it (and other abilities associated with it) as hard water. And I think OK maybe that's just how aquaman writers refer to this type of water, it doesn't have anything to do with mera?

But then, when Atlan is giving Atlanna (Arthur/Orin's mom) predictions about her son, he says this:

So, was Mera initially supposed to have powers that were associated with the Dark Gods Shalako gained his powers from in Atlantis Chronicles, but David dropped the plot point? Was like... proto-xebel/re-imagined-dimension-aqua a place in the world of the dark gods or worshipers of such creatures???? We don't know b/c while these hints are here (shalako using hard water, which early comics define as something everyone in mera's dimension do, and then atlan referring to the woman arthur has a child with (and they both leave him) as from the world of the dark gods), David literally never does anything interesting with any of the female characters in his run aaaaaaaaaaa

M -  Qual é a sobremesa favorita deles?

Salada de Frutas ou apenas frutas frescas mesmo. Maçã, mamão ou morango. 

A -  Quais foram as melhores matérias desse personagem na escola?

Mareena sempre foi uma boa aluna, ainda que as suas notas costumassem ser medianas em comparação com as excelentes que Atlanna geralmente tirava. Se destacava em estudos militares, combate e historia. 

R -  Como são as mãos deles?

São mãos pálidas, magras e com dedos longos, porém são bem fortes. Um pouco rígidas e calejadas devido ao treinamento de combate com o tridente. E muito geladas como é o normal para um atlante. 

E -  Como eles são com crianças?

Marie nunca conviveu com crianças então costumava não ser muito boa com elas. Porém, ela não as odiava ou sentia raiva delas, longe disso. Porque ela sempre as viu como a esperança para o futuro. Desde que passou a conviver com a irmã mais nova de Jon, ela desenvolveu um dom para lidar com crianças ao ponto de que ela definitivamente quer ter filhos no futuro. Algo que até então não tinha cogitado.

Enquanto vivia em Atlântida, Mareena comia exatamente o mesmo que sua irmã mais velha. Mas depois que se mudou para a superfície, ela passou a comer fatias de pão integral com geleia de frutas vermelhas e a beber suco de laranja natural e alguma fruta.

Obviamente.

Mareena tem a voz firme e séria, falando de maneira polida e formal na maioria das vezes. Ainda tem uma voz considerada sedutora mesmo que não seja essa a intensão. Provavelmente, seja devido ao sotaque atlante que é considerado bem exótico.

Second Chance - Part One

Pairing: Orm Marius x Male Atlantean Reader

Request: Heey, can I make a request? I saw your post about Orm from Aquaman and I had this idea where the male reader is the royal consort instead of Mera. You are free to do whatever you want with that! Thxx :)

Note: My fingers slipped and this happened. Is up to you guys if I should continue with this story or not, so let me know!!

Orm was obsessing over his brother, again. He had always blamed the man for what happened to his mother and he being a half-breed only made the matters worse. Orm's father had raised his son to hate the surface world as much as it's inhabitants. (Y/n) didn't altogether agree with his king's beliefs.

Yes they were savages who only killed and raged war upon each other, polluted their planet and murdered the childrens of the ocean for sport, but Queen Atlanna had seen good in them and (y/n) had to agree with her, they weren't entirely evil as the Atlanteans weren't entirely good either. 

(Y/n) had seen it with his own eyes what the humans are capable off. He walked through the surface world. The atlantean saw injustice, discrimination, oppression and many unspeakable things, but the more he observed the more he saw his own world reflected before him.

The world of men had good traits too. Whenever (y/n) least expected he would be treated with kindness and everlasting compassion, things that he found lacking in Atlantis.

The world of men was only misguided, if only (y/n) could make Orm see that, the imminent blood shed would be prevented. But his future husband was as stubborn as his father before him. And his mind was set on war.

That is why (y/n) offered to help his little sister, Mera. That girl was set to stop her king's crazy plan and nothing would stop her. (y/n) knew it was foolish to try convince her otherwise so he was left with no choice but to help, only if he had known what her plan was. 

She went after the half-breed to convince him of his birth right as king of Atlantis.

“Are you out of your goddamn mind Mera!?” (Y/n) had traveled with his sister to the surface so they could talk without the fear of being watched. “I agreed to whatever you were doing to keep you out of harm's way, but this has gone to far.” The (y/h/c) haired man was trembling with barely concealed anger.

“What was I supposed to do? Orm won't listen to reason (y/n), not even YOU could make him change his mind.” The waves crashing upon the rocky sides of the cliff were almost enough to swallow her last words, but (y/n) still heard them and they cut deep. 

“He is my future husband, my king. What you're doing is high treason Mera. I'm trying to keep you safe, but I won't be dragged into this mess.” 

“So now you'll act like a loyal puppy? For your “king”?” The bitter tone in his sister's voice caught the man him off guard.

“What are you talking about? Yes, OUR king.” (y/n) made a point to emphasize the word. 

“He's not my king, not since he chose you to rule at his side and not me.” The girl was barely able to hold her tears at bay. “You remember, right? When I would spend day and night telling you about how much I dreamed to become queen of Atlantis just to have you take my place in the end.” 

(Y/n) couldn't believe what he was hearing. Mera was jealous of him for taking her place as royal consort. The atlantean thought his sister's obsession with becoming queen was just a child's fantasy. 

Orm didn't chose Mera because the king was already falling for her older brother. And (y/n) being the most skillful warrior in all Atlantis just came as a plus. But his sister wouldn't want to just dethrone Orm for petty jealousy… would her? Then the real reason came to (y/n) like a lightning bolt.

“You want the half-breed to reclaim his birthright just so you can be his queen?” (y/n) saw the way his sister looked down in shame, confirming his suspicion. “You would betray everything, your people, our father and me just so you could have a crown over your head?!” Just thinking about made (y/n) churn, the ideia that his sister could be so naive and irresponsible.

“It's not just the crown. It's the power that comes with it. I could finally be what I was always meant to be.” Mera said those words with a conviction of a mad woman, hungry for power and influence.

“Saving the people of the surface world was never your priority was it? How could I be so blind. I never wanted to take your place Mera. Me and Orm fell in love with each other, that is why I accepted. You know I never wanted this responsibility.” It pained (y/n) to say the next words but he knew with who his heart and loyalty belonged to, and it wasn't to some half-breed he never met. “I thought your heart and mind were in the right place, but I was wrong. If you continue with your crazy plan I won't support you at all. You'll be on your own. And tell your friend that if he ever try to harm my king in anyway, blood will be spilled. And you know I always win. Always.”

With that (y/n) looked at his sister one last time before jumping into the ocean and making his way back to Atlantis.

That same night (y/n) found his king in their shared royal bedroom, pacing, swimming in circles to be more precise. The man had his armor off, with just a purple almost transparent robe covering his body and his blond hair was lose, floating around his head. A sight that only his Royal consort was allowed to see, a fact that (y/n) was rather proud of.

When Orm heard someone at the door he turned around briskly as if expecting a threat. His worry lines softened and a half smile puled at his lips at the sight of his soon to be king.

“(Y/n), my dearest, where were you? I've been worrying sick.” The blond was at his lover's side in a second, giving him a soft kiss in the temple that (y/n) gladly accepted and returned.

“Don't treat me like a damsel in distress my king, we both know I'm very capable of protecting myself.” Orm knew how a ruthless warrior (y/n) could be, the best in all Atlantis, but the blonde still worried. Those were troubled times and the enemy could be lurking anywhere.

“I know you can protect yourself dear, but I can shake the feeling that something bad will happen.” The worry lines were back and the man's expression became haunted. “I feel lost, like I'm drifting through the open sea, without a direction. Except when I'm with you.” The half smile was back but it was somewhat dulled by the heavy subject. “I don't know what I would do if I lost you.”

“You won't. You're stuck with me, for better or worse.” (y/n) knew better than make a promise he had no control over, but he could at least lessen a few worries that plagued the king's heart. “And in a few weeks we will be tied together by Poseidon's blessing. So you better start getting used to the idea of having to look at this beautiful face for all eternity.” That last statement definitely drew a laugh from his king, and (y/n) was glad to ease the tension Orm was under even if a little bit.

“Only you to make me laugh at a time like this.” The king finally gave a real smile, with white teeth, dimples and blue eyes full of admiration. (Y/n) couldn't look at those ocean blue eyes for long without blushing like a teenager, so he turned away at the pretence of removing his armor. “Where were you anyway. It's unlike you to arrive so late.” The king asked while helping (y/n) remove the more complicated pieces of armor.

“I was just taking a walk above sea. I missed the stars.” Technically that wasn't a lie. (Y/n) did miss the sight of the night sky, sparkling with celestial life. Below sea was beautiful, it was his home after all, but the surface had it's own beauties to. He wanted to show all of them to Orm, but he never dared to ask the blonde to go with him. And he definitely wouldn't tell his king the real reason for his late night walk.

(Y/n) could feel the hand in his shoulder freeze, then the hold became a little tighter and suddenly it was gone. Orm had turned his back, his eyes were focused on his city that could be seen through the enormous window in the far side wall.

“We already had this conversation (y/n). I don't like when you go up there. That filthy place it's not worthy of your time or your presence.” The blonde's gaze didn't move from the window so the man behind him couldn't see his face.

“Our last conversation about this subject ended with you storming off and don't speaking with me for three days.” (y/n) left the last piece of his armor float to the floor before swimming towards his king and stopping in front of him, blocking the image of the city.

“Your infatuation with that place is insane.” The man's voice raised while he tried to control his irritation at the topic.

“Insane is your hatred towards an entire race just because of ONE man.” (y/n)'s voice raised to match Orm's, that was growing increasingly upset by the second, but the (y/h/c) haired man didn't stop, he couldn't. “Your brother didn't have anything to do with your mother's death, her choices were her own and if she was here today I'm sure she would agree with me. Atlanna's only dream was to prove to our people that we can coexist with the surface world. Which is exactly the opposite of what you're trying to do. Your mother…”

“My mother is dead!” The scream caught (y/n) by surprise, shocking him to silence. Eyes wide and red. Lips trembling and bared teeth. The king was crying, but the ocean was carrying away his tears.

“Yes she's dead.” (y/n) cupped the king's face with his hands while looking directly into those ocean blue eyes. “And you had to grow up with a man that only knew hatred. You were misguided, my love. War isn't always the answer. They'll only reply with more war and then the vicious cycle will never end. And if it ends someday, the winner would only be left standing in a pile of ashes.” At some point (y/n) had started crying to. It pained him to see Orm that way, helpless.

“What can I do? It's in their blood. They will never change.” The future king could see an opportunity to show Orm that not all men were savages. He needed to show the king how humans really lived, above sea level.

“Then let me show you what I see. Let me prove to you that they deserve a chance. And if I'm not successful in changing your mind, i'll support you and your war.” (y/n) didn't dare look away from his lover's gaze. If he had any chance to stop this conflict and the rise of a new half-breed king, he needed Orm to see reason, it was the only way.

But whatever his king decided to do, (y/n) would never live his side.

“Alright my dearest, I'll give this a chance. You're the only one I trust.” (y/n) sagged with relief as he hugged his king, the man he loved.

“You won't regret this, I promise.” Orm buried his face in the crook of his soon to be king and practically melted when (y/n) begun running his fingers through his hair, in the same way his mother used to do. They stayed like this for a few minutes untill the blonde broke the silence. 

“You look like her. My mother I mean.” Orm's whispered from where his face was still hidden in his lover's neck.

“How so?” (y/n) replied quietly, fingers never stoping their ministrations on the strands of blonde hair.

“You're fierce. I mean, you know hundreds of ways to kill a man. You probably could take down an army armed only with your Trident.” (y/n) could only listen to his king, trying to understand from where all of that was coming from. “But you have a heart. You can still be compassionate and benevolent, like her. She always saw the best in people, even when no one treated her with kindness.”

“I remember. She used to say that our people grew cold hearted from the lack of sunlight. And I agreed with her, and still do.” (y/n) gently cupped Orm's cheek, causing the man to look him in the eye. “Let me show you what your mother and I believe in. There's so much beautie up there. The sun, the sky and my favorite, the stars. And so much more. I've never seen so much kindness in one place. Our people can learn from them as much as they can learn from us.” (Y/n) had such an excited expression that Orm couldn't help but mirror it. “You won't have to do anything, I'll make the preparations, but don't worry we'll take it slow, it can be pretty distressing on your first time.” The king had a devilish smile when his lover finished talking.

“Are we still talking about going to the surface right? Or are you getting second intentions, dear?” (y/n)'s only answer for a while was furrowed brows and a look of confusion, and then his eyes lit up and his entire face turned red, making the king even more amused.

“I-I didn't mean to make it sound like that. It's not that I wouldn't be happy to do THAT with you, it's just… we-we should wait untill after the blessing, n-not that… Oh Poseidon help me.” (Y/n) finally got a hold of himself and stopped talking, but he couldn't look into Orm's eyes so he focused on a very interesting bubble by his feet.

His face was burning from embarrassment, if only his father could see him now. The most ruthless warrior in all Atlantis, blushing at the prospect of making love with his king.

“My dear look at me.” The king said while guiding the man's face with a finger under his chin, ever so gentle. (Y/n) couldn't do anything but obey, he let their eyes meet and those ocean blue orbs were shining with such intense adoration that almost brought (Y/n) to tears, again. “I was just teasing. We'll have a lot of time to get to know each other after the blessing, I'm sure. There's nothing I would want more.”

(Y/n) released a water he didn't know he was holding. He wasn't afraid that his king wouldn't feel that way towards him, if Orm never wanted to have sex so be it, but it was good to feel desired. And something in the king's eyes told him he would prove his point very soon.

(Y/n) cleared his throat, trying to get rid of the last bit of embarrassment before speaking. “So if that's settled, I'll talk with Vulko tomorrow about everything we will need for the journey. I think it's best if the whole thing remains a secret, no need to cause unnecessary speculations among the people.”

“Yes, of course. I trust you to get it done, but for now I think we should get some sleep. You look ready to pass out my dear.” Orm gently guided (y/n) towards the bed while the man mumbled about the things he needed to show his King when they got to the surface.

Once (y/n) was laid in bed and almost sleeping the king joined him. Orm hugged his soon to be king close to his chest, giving him a lingering kiss in the nape of the neck. (Y/n) was the only person he trusted in this world, and if he believed the surface dwellers could be redeemed than Orm would give him a chance to prove it.

If they were truly the scum of this world, like his father told him about then they would be destroyed once and for all, and his brother with them.

Y/N’s head rested on my chest, her breathes were slow and even as she slept. I slowly traced my fingers up and down her bare back. She was so beautiful, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her. Her soft y/c hair tickled my skin when her head would slightly move, her eyes fluttered underneath her eyelids as she dreamed. She was perfect in every little way.

We also had a lot in common. One, we ere both Atlantean. Two, we were both of royal blood. And three, we were both bastards. I was born to Atlanna, the queen of Atlantis and Tom, a simple, surface lighthouse keeper. Y/N was born to King Orvax and his maiden he had when my mother escaped to the surface. 

Fortunately enough for Y/N, her mother managed to keep her identity a secret until one day, she her secret slipped out. The king planned to show “mercy” and do a public execution of her and her mother, instead of being sacrificed to the Trench. Y/N managed to just barely escape, and ran into me. The infamous bastard of Queen Atlanna.I took her to the surface and we instantly became great friends. 

That was five years ago. Now, we were something more than just “great friends.” We were each other’s other half, lovers that were destined for each other since birth. 

Y/N started to stir, pulling me out of my head. She lifted her head and perched her chin on my chest, smiling a small, sleepy smile. 

“Hey there.” I said and continued rubbing her back.

“Hi.” She mumbled and kissed my chest. I smiled at the love of my life and moved my hand to play with the ends of her hair. 

“You’re up early.” I chuckled.

“How early?” She asked, still peppering kisses over my chest. I looked at the clock on the nightstand. 

“3:20 early.” She mumbled something I couldn’t understand and peppered kisses up my chest, to my neck, then finally to my lips. I kissed back and placed one hand on the back of her neck and the other on her waist. It was a slow kiss, filled with passion and love. It reminded me of our first kiss, how slow and perfect it was, just like this one.

She pulled away too soon and smiled down at me.

“We should go for a swim.” She said . I stared into her beautiful y/c eyes and nodded. 

“Let’s go.”

After hours of racing through the water together, we decided we should stop and take a break. I watched as Y/N slowly glided through the water with a small school of fish. She looked so happy. Suddenly, an Atlantan patrol ship came up from a drop off. Four guards exited the ship, blasters in hand aiming them at Y/N and I. 

“Y/N Y/L/N, by order of King Orm of Atlantis, you are under arrest.” The main guard said closing in on Y/N.

““Back off!” I yelled and made a move to get in front of her. Two of the guards stopped me with their blasters. 

“Arthur Curry, you’ll be coming with us too.” The first guard looked at me with a wicked smile. Not a moment later, we were being guided to the ship and shoved inside.

It took only a matter of minutes for us to reach Atlantis, we were moving so fast. We were unloaded and immediately chained and dragged to a large, open throne room. There, sitting on his throne was Orm, Y/N’s and my half brother. 

“Hello big brother... and sister.” He stood and swam over to us. “So good to see you both, and together!” He said with fake joy. Y/N and I both glared at him as he circled us. “I bet you’re wondering why I’ve brought you both here.” 

“Yeah we would.” Y/N snapped snarkily. I smirked at her fire and waited for Orm’s response. 

“Your execution,” One stopped in front of her and smiled an evil smile. “big sister.” Y/N’s eyes looked defeated. 

“Sir, we have everything ready.” A guard came up behind us. 

“Perfect, let’s not waste any time then.” Orm glided past us and into the awaiting ship. 

“No! You can’t do this! She hasn’t done anything wrong!” I yelled as I was pushed to the ship. I struggled against the restraints but failed at any form of escape. They were just too strong. 

“Shut it half breed!” The guard jabbed me in the back with his gun, causing me to stumble forward..

“Arthur, please just cooperate. This has alaways been my fate. I escaped it once but now there’s no way I can again.” Y/N said quietly, hanging her head. 

“Y/N, I can’t let them do this to you!” I pleaded with her. She looked up at me with a hopeless expression. 

“It’s already done.”

Time skip to when Arthur and Mera are on their way to the trench 

Mera and I had already been on a long journey, and it was about to get even longer. We were approaching the Trench. The place where I was forced to watch the love of my life get sacrificed. I remember the day like it was just yesterday. How they forced her off the ship and into the dark water, filled with mindless, savage creatures. I pushed the terrible memory from my head and stood up.

“We’re almost there.” Mera said. I nodded and looked out onto the sea. “Hey, are you going to be okay?” She placed a hand on my shoulder for comfort. 

“Yeah I’m fine.” I cleared my throat and gathered myself. 

Not too long after, we were fighting off the monsters of the deep. 

“Get inside!” I ushered Mera into the cabin and slid the door closed. I pulled out a case of emergency lighters and lit one up. The monsters immediately started to scare off at the sight of it. 

“They’re from the deep, they’re scared of the light!” I stated and handed Mera the one I was holding, grabbing more and storing them for later. 

Once we had managed to dive into the water, the light  successfully kept away the monsters. We had gotten pretty far when the last of our emergency lighters went out. We escaped through a thin crack in the trench wall and came to an odd whirlpool type thing.

“That thing’ll tear us apart!” Mera exclaimed. I looked behind us then back at her. 

“We have no choice.” With that, we grabbed hands and headed into the whirling cylinder.

Everything was a blur as I got violently whipped around, until finally being thrown out into calm water. I swam to the surface and looked around panicked. Where was I? Where was Mera? 

“Mera!” I called out. When I didn’t get a response, I took off to the closest piece of land. 

Once I got there I spotted Mera, as well as a figure looming in front of her. The person turned around and there stood the last person I ever expected to see. Y/N. 

“Arthur!” She dropped her weapon and ran towards me. 

“Y/N, oh my god!” I caught her in my arms and held her as close as I possibly could. “You’re  alive!” I felt tears already streaming down my cheeks. She pulled away just enough to look at me. 

“Yes, I managed to get past those creatures and I ended up here. Oh Arthur I can’t believe this is happening!” She placed her hands on my cheeks and stared into my eyes. I pulled her back to me and hugged her tight. In the corner of my eye, I saw Mera. She was smiling with her hands over her heart. 

“Y/N, I can’t believe your alive.” I pulled back and placed a hand on her face, stroking her cheek with my thumb. “This has to be a dream.” I mumbled. Y/N chuckled and shook her head. 

“No Arthur, you’re wide awake.” She leaned up and gently placed her lips on mine. They felt just as perfect as the last time I had felt them against my lips. I instantly kissed back, snaking my arm around her waist. I had found the love of my life, alive and well, and I was never letting her go.

so last time i was a complete idjit and misread the question so i’m just gonna go ahead and respond with the correct one

FAVOURITE AQUA.MAN ARCS

#01 - THE DROWNING

A mind-blowing start from Dan Abnett, taking over from Jeff Parker who wrote the last stories in the New52 (more on him later), Abnett starts Rebirth with a bang for Aqua.man. If you read this story and you don’t feel the maddening need afterwards to punch out anyone who says anything bad about Arthur then... you need to read it again. Dealing with a secret organisation who is trying to fuel a war between Atlantis and the Surface, Arthur is racing against the clock to try and prevent it while he seems guilty in the eyes of the whole world as well. Trying to prove his and Atlantis’ innocence while also having to deal with all his hurt due to his public image and his relationship to the rest of the Justice League. It’s a story of Arthur & Mera’s race against time and against the world. 

Every time I think of that story, I just become an even bigger fan of Arthur.

#02 - THE ATLANTIS CHRONICLES

You won’t see Arthur or any of the usual Aqua Crew in this, however this brilliant arc pulls together an intriguing history of the preboot canon of Atlantis, set up as ancient documents that have been found and now were turned into comics by DC. The storytelling is incredibly smart, every single issue written from a different point of view in different points in time in Atlantis’ history, a beautiful and truthful representation how there are no absolute truths in history and how the observer’s own point of view and beliefs can change the narrative. It’s a fascinating story starting from when Atlantis was still a thriving kingdom on the surface to the point when Atlanna realises she is pregnant. As I said this is preboot, specifically 80′s/90′s canon when Arthur was from Atlantis through and through, however the history of Atlantis is so fleshed out, something reboot has never done, I do take many points from it myself.

Also, watch out for strong and at times potentially triggering themes, this is not necessarily for the weak of heart.

#03 - THRONE OF ATLANTIS

The absolutely epic arc that birthed the cartoon of the same title (never seen it but heard it changes the story in many regards so boo) and also inspired some of the events of the DCEU film adaptation. In my opinion, if DCEU just went ahead and adapted this for the most part, it would’ve been a much more compelling story with a lot less cliché but Hollywood, eh? Anyway, this is the event that forces the reluctant heir to finally accept his legacy and become King of Atlantis. I love this story because you actually see a very reasonable Orm, who is a very good king and is a loving brother, supporting Arthur from the moment he turned up in Atlantis and realised he has a brother. Orm offers Arthur the throne because it’s rightfully his as the eldest son and Arthur is the one who initially refuses. These two brother don’t actually want to fight one another, however circumstances pit them against each other until they have no choice but to engage in battle.

It’s an epic story with loads of heart, it starts in Aqua.man #14 to #16 then concludes in Justice League #15 to #17 (also for some background info it’s good to read Aqua.man #0 of New52). It concludes in an epic battle and it tugs at your heart strings and there’s a very good twist there as well. I can’t recommend this story enough.

#04 - MAELSTROM

This story incorporates classic Aqua.man elements which are the underwater adventures, discovering ancient secrets in a Indiana Jones-esque way, written by Jeff Parker and how brilliantly! (I said I'll mention him later) Suspicions arise and Arthur starts to investigate into the past of Atlantis, specifically a part that is most painful to him; the death of his mother, Atlanna. Arthur & Mera go on an epic journey to uncover the truth and the conclusion is equally heartbreaking and yet heartwarming. I know I probably have screamed about this story many many times, again, parts of it have been adapted by the DCEU, but massively changed it, so in case you don’t know which story this is, I won’t tell you what happens but there were tears for me.

#05 - THE TRENCH

Just to show you how much DCEU Aqua.man has basically just done a megamix of the comic arcs, have this as well. It is a great story, the twist would be bigger if you didn’t know the DCEU story, it’s proper scary as well at times, it’s also the very first story in the New52, Geoff Johns open with this, and I know so many of you don’t like him for certain reasons, that’s fair enough, but you can’t tell me not to like him, sorry. He has brought back Arthur to basics and really handled it perfectly. This is a great start and also a fairly important read BEFORE you start on Throne of Atlantis. 

in conclusion...  i know that for the majority of people new52 was a step back, but if you look anywhere for best ranked aqua.man arcs, you’ll find most of new52 up there because it gave arthur a chance for a much needed restart. a lot of people know aqua.man for his asshole attitude and hook hand, but that wasn’t the case for most of his history, that was actually a deviation from his original personality (again, i’m not saying people can’t like that, i’m just saying that historically, that era tried to change a lot of things about arthur and his mythology). so new52 came in and said ‘no, we’re going back to basics, because arthur doesn’t need to be an angry asshole, he doesn’t need a hook hand to be cool. he is cool as he is’ and honestly, if you’ve ever read an aqua.man comic, you’ll know this very well, he has never not been cool, pop culture only relies on his image in super friends.

and that’s why i’m annoyed about the current arc, once again trying to make arthur edgier, but he doesn’t need that. his image was perfectly fine and ksd’s stories will never rank anywhere near the top in the history of aqua.man, they just miss that massive amount of heart, genuine love and emotion that was poured into the new52 stories and some of rebirth.

I just saw Aquaman!

And! I! Loved! It!

I think it was the aquarium bit right at the beginning where I just stopped and went, “oh fuck, I’m afraid of fish.” I had kind of… forgotten? that I have an irrational fear of fish? There weren’t many scenes where just little fish were going around so it was mostly fine. And despite this fact, I still very much loved the movie. It was amazing. So here’s some things I loved.

The absence of death for the drama: Firstly, let me just say how happy I am that they didn’t go the cheap route of killing off characters for drama. Like it would have been so easy for them to kill his dad. So easy. And through that scene (which was gorgeous btw, both the sound design and the cinematography) I was so scared that they would, but like… kind of resigned to the fact. And then they didn’t. And Vulko too! I thought he was gonna for sure get killed for motivation. First during the Ring of Fire (btw, the Johnny Cash song of the same name played in my head every time someone said it) I thought he was gonna jump in the way to prevent Arthur losing and die. Then during the rest of the film there were so many opportunities for him to get killed and he did not! It would have been so easy to kill his dad or his father figure but they didn’t, and you know why? Because then it wouldn’t have been about Arthur regaining his birthright and learning to accept both sides of himself, it would have been a plain and simple revenge story. Like so many other movies we’ve seen before. Good on them for avoiding the cliché that this has to happen for a hero’s journey.

Atlanna: While we’re at it, let’s talk about Queen Atlanna. Because I don’t think most people, who have seen movies like this before, really believed that she was dead. When there’s no hard evidence, you gotta assume they’re fine. And I love that, when characters are so pleasantly shocked and surprised to see their loved one alive. I live for that. And this film did not disappoint. Their reunion was beautiful and touching. And I definitely teared up when she asked about Arthur’s dad. And the person sitting in front of me was just absolutely sobbing. Either that or choking on their popcorn. I couldn’t tell.

Diversity: How about that love story between his parents eh! That was heartbreaking and beautiful. And it was just so, so refreshing to see non-white characters let me just say. Like Arthur’s dad is a gorgeous man and it hurts that we haven’t seen stuff like this before. It was just perfect. And I loved how Arthur was also still very much connected to the culture of his father and his family. That’s an extra layer of depth that you can’t get as easily when everyone is white. 

Comedy: So this movie was hilarious. It was so, so funny. Like… the octopus on the drums? During the Ring of Fire scene? I laughed so hard and so long that I set off the person sitting next to me who also started laughing. My god, I just couldn’t help it. It made me think of The Little Mermaid. But also like, the “bogeys on our six” “what does that mean???” “Bad guys behind us!” “Just say that then!” “Bad guys behind us! Bad guys behind us!” Just getting increasingly higher and higher pitched. Like that was priceless. Also side note, we talk a lot about female characters being allowed to make “unsexy” noises when fighting, but like there are also multiple points in this film where Jason Momoa isn’t just being all gruff grunts in fights either, like he gets thrown off a roof in Italy and his yell turns into a high pitched scream at one point like yes!

Mera: Also Princess Mera! Like damn! It is very clear she is very much an equal, and never lesser than the male lead. She’s the one who knows what she’s doing. And like the thing with controlling water? That’s something that’s uniquely her. It’s not something that she has to teach to Arthur. That’s her own insanely powerful thing and Arthur and everyone else can’t help but respect her and just be in awe. Also, trying to do things from the background to keep the leverage she has in her position, but not hesitating to just go for it either. When she sees no other choice she jumps feet first into her new role as a traitor because she wants to see her nation under better rule.

Arthur: As a character, I loved that he wasn’t like, the smartest guy, but he could still use his head and think through things. He’s not an idiot. He has knowledge about certain things like history. I loved that he was named after Arthurian legend and they kept with that, that his dad is a history lover and taught him stuff.  He differs to Mera, acknowledging that she’s brilliant. And he wins his battles not by brute strength (except for the first one which set up perfectly what he could do) or by outsmarting the other guy, but often by just stopping to talk (that monster that was guarding) or by getting help (the huge battle at the end with the sea creatures). An argument can even be made for it not being sheer strength that wins the final duel, but skill. He even acknowledges this by saying that he’s a blunt weapon and good at it. All he wants to do is help and protect people which we see plainly on both the sub and in Italy. Arthur is a great, well fleshed-out character that felt completely real.

Atlantis’ walls: Ok, the bit where they’re entering the city and Arthur says, “why don’t people just go over the walls?” and Mera says that it’s impossible and there’s hydra canons and whatnot, I just started chanting in my head Chekhov’s gun Chekhov’s gun Chekhov’s gun! (For those that don’t know, it’s a literary device that states “If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired”. Meaning, if you gonna mention something like that, do something with it). And by golly did they! I was assuming they were gonna have to break in at some later point, I didn’t think they’d be breaking out! That was great!

The ending: It was absolutely perfect. How everyone stands witness to the battle and their battle itself, including all of the talking they did in it. I adored the relationship between the two brothers. Like how Arthur said earlier that he had wanted to meet him and get to know him. Then at the end he tells him that they can talk when he’s ready and Orm actually hesitantly gives him a nod. And the fact that he spared him at all. He regrets not showing mercy to Manta’s father, and will not fail to show mercy again here. And how Atlanna shows up and talks to Orm and tells him she loves him and doesn’t blame him, she blames how his father raised him. It took my breath away with how genuinely fulfilling this ending felt.

Couple last points: The soundtrack was an absolute bop my dudes! Like wow! The song choices, the original music, it was all just so, so good and so, so perfect. Also enjoyed how the movie didn’t coddle the viewers. It didn’t explain everything straight up. There’s mentions of Vulko before we know who he is, they don’t tell us right when we met her who Mera is, they showed us through her short conversation with her father. The characters felt real, having conversations about things they knew about and not bothering to tell us until we had wondered how they knew, like how Arthur believed his mother to have been executed. They did show don’t tell extremely well throughout the entirety of the movie.

In conclusion, it was an amazing film with a terrific cast, great acting, brilliant and witty writing, breath taking cinematography, believable characters, and beautiful battles. And I loved every second of it.

(Slight Aquaman spoilers but also not really, I’m just bein safe).

Anyway- so Aquaman talks a lot about different worlds, and that Arthur is from both. So picture this: AU setting, Arthur is still half human and half Atlantian, but he grew up (mostly) in Atlantis. Sea dwellers and land dwellers are still at each other’s throats, but in this they explicitly know about each other and land dwellers are also elemental types.

Atlanna, after her kind of shit husband has been sacrificed to the trench for trying to kill Arthur b/c Atlantians will be slightly less dickish than they were in the movie but not really, decides she’s kind of done with the way land and sea can’t seem to work together. So she goes to the land people and strikes up a political deal- a marriage of land and sea so land dwellers will stop throwing trash in the fuckin ocean, and sea dwellers will stop eating their trading ships and stealing their shit. Seems like a good deal.

Cue Tony, who does not want anything to do with this and shit, neither does Arthur but he is the first born and even if he wasn’t he might think Orm is a bit of a dick but he still loves his brother and he wouldn’t let him suffer that way. So he bites the bullet and decides to marry the damn land dweller and hopes he’s an elemental type. Tony is, and an unusual one in that he can move things that are technically two elements in one like magma. Arthur is similar in that way because, while he’s better with air, he obviously lives in the water and does water stuff all the time (even if he’s not as skilled or practiced as Mera is).

At first they don’t really know what to do with each other and Tony is damn stubborn so he mostly refuses to speak to Arthur altogether, which really pisses the Atlantians off given this is supposed to be a marriage of land and sea and land is fucking right off, but Orm eventually figures Tony’s interests out. He happens to have an interest in the military given that he knows he’s not next in line to be king and while he wants that position more than anything else Orm isn’t willing to kill his brother for it, not the way his father tried to. But he’s studying weaponry when he finds Tony examining weapons too and asks, mostly because he’s trying to feel out of Tony is spying or not, if he has an interest in weapons. Tony, not catching that Orm is looking for potential spying, tells him no, what he has an interest in is engineering but weapons that work underwater are especially interesting because of the engineering difficulties.

So Orm considers this, debates on letting Arthur flounder more because he’s not totally above sabotaging his brother for a potential spot as king- he is pure Atlantian so he has that going for him, but eventually tells Arthur about Tony’s interests. Arthur ends up asking about an old piece of technology, one that supposedly hides the information on where to find king Atlan’s lost trident but the tech is too old, no one knows what to do with it. Tony quickly determines they can’t do much of anything because that piece of tech is meant to fit into something else and he begins his research, tracking down what its supposed to fit in to. That’s how they end up on land again, in the desert while Mera tries to track things and Tony makes an effort to keep them cool, a party trick Arthur finds especially neat given that its kind of the opposite of what Tony is supposed to be able to do.

They end up getting the message from Atlan, they go through the motions that happen in the movie, blah, blah, they find the trident, bring it back, bond, etc. And when they come back with the trident, thanks to Tony and Arthur having found it together, it ends up being a true marriage of the land and sea and everyone lives happily ever after and Mera is a lesbian because she’s got some chaotic gay energy.

- If this movie doesn’t get the Oscar for Best Special Effects I will RIOT this movie literally has the BEST greenscreening and CGI I have EVER SEEN IN ANY MOVIE EVER

- All of the fight sequences are STELLAR

- I love Mera so much she is a QUEEN and her dynamic with Arthur was everything I wanted in life after that one scene between them in Justice League??? Just the continually sniping at each other but also saving each other and being vulnerable with each other and gradually falling in love that is THE GOOD SHIT I might have a new DC OTP which is saying something considering Rick/June exists

- TOM AND ATLANNA. I DIDN’T NEED MY HEART ANYWAY.

- C R E A T U R E S. I KNEW JAMES WAN WOULD NOT FUCKING DISAPPOINT

- I ALREADY MADE A POST ABOUT THIS BUT THE SCORE AND SOUNDTRACK. ICONIC.

- You don’t need to have seen any of the other DCEU movies to watch and enjoy Aquaman and it’s also a great introduction to the character just in case you go in not knowing anything about him or his origins

- “I don’t play well with others” SAYS THE MAN WHO LITERALLY JUST SPENT AN ENTIRE MOVIE WORKING WITH 4-5 OTHER PEOPLE ARTHUR YOU’RE SO FULL OF SHIT

- THE TRENCH SEQUENCE JESUS CHRIST. I knew James Wan was gonna throw some horror elements into this movie and BOY DID HE EVER COME THROUGH IN THAT REGARD

- Atlanna is such a badass and I love EVERYTHING ABOUT HER

- Mera using the wine as a weapon was so fucking hardcore I nearly screamed “YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS SLAAAAAAAAAAAAY” in the theatre

- I really like what the did with Orm as a character honestly??? He’s such an effective villain and yet I like how they left things with him; plus I really want to know more about what his and Mera’s childhood was like

- The entire Sicily sequence just every single detail was perfection from the massive battle to Mera discovering more and more surface things that was so cute and reminded me of The Little Mermaid in the BEST WAY

- MEEEEEEEEERPEOPLE 8D

- I love the Princess of the Fishermen so fucking much protect her at all costs

- Atlantis being so technologically advanced like a huge underwater city was SO COOL

- I absolutely adored seeing all the different underwater kingdoms and the sheer diversity of it all 8D And SURPRISE JOHN RHYS-DAVIES
