Leader of my old rwby oc team is coming back as a classic Clover self insert (i.e. Literally just me plopped into the universe) and (aside from my pokémon self insert) I have never been more tempted to just give them my name. But alas, color rule. Also there’s already a guy named Clover in there
#I know clover is a shade of green but it’s funnier to use color rule as a reason not to than the guy. rip clover sorry you’re from atlas so#I don’t remember you like at all <3 (didn’t like those volumes very much and haven’t gotten to them in my rewatch) (just finished v6 lol)#also I was not intending to do a full rewatch. at first I just wanted to watch the qrow v tyrian fight. but v4 is my favorite volume so I#went eh I’ll just rewatch the whole volume for it. but of course you can’t have v4 without v5. and well I was already that far I may as well#watch v6 too. and at this point it’s like well I don’t really remember v7 or v8 I probably should see them again. oh well!#rip volumes 1-3 maybe I’ll watch them again after v8. cause I just saw v9 I don’t need a rewatch of it yet lol#oh yeah secret third reason I can’t give this guy my name is they’re team leader and I can’t think of a good team name color that starts#with c and has an r in it. (gotta have russet on the team of course)#cerulean would work wonderfully I love cerulean but uh. it doesn’t condense to 4 letters very well#and yes. I know. not all team names are colors. but come on it’s gotta be a color#zoracontent

"That's not good. You should sleep." His mind was reduced to thinking very little at once. To be fair, he found comfort in that and maybe he would even admit that it was the reason for his drinking.
"You won't let me sleep my way, will you..." James grumbled pushing himself up again. He swayed. Up was a very loose concept. Took him a moment to kick his boots off.
"Alright." Climbing the bed wasn't as easy as it should, but hooking his hand over Qrow and pulling him down on the mattress was easy. "You must sleep too."
"I won't sleep well no matter where you sleep, you can share the bed with me." Qrow insists on the matter, patting the bed next to him.
"Maybe then you'll agree that your beds suck."
He finds it oddly comforting to hear that James doesn't get wasted with guests, but is still concerned about him getting wasted at all.

Hot take: Ozpin isn't even morally gray. I guess he is if you count past lives (slaughtering potentially thousands of ppl to end a war), but otherwise?? I really don't think he is.
Imo, Qrow is more morally gray, Ironwood pre-villain arc was morally gray, etc. I really don't think any of Oz's actions could count as 'morally gray', even when considering that he kept important information to keep his circle and by extension RWBY and Co hopeful, regardless of if you think it's manipulative or not (technically yes, but there was good intentions behind it so imo it's fundamentally different).
Oz really isn't the bad guy the entire fndm tries making him out to be. If he was I think the show would show him in that light, which it doesn't. It TRIED showing him as morally gray, but generally his actions aren't that bad. The FNDM loves saying Oz is an awful manipulative compulsive liar who's intentions are weird and muddy. But honestly I think if he was like that, he wouldn't be portrayed as good. Most of Salems own opinions on Oz is her projecting and being a hypocrite. I don't think the characters narration is reliable when it comes to Oz. The show itself tried making him seem like that in v6, but ultimately failed.
An example people use to say he's morally gray is pointing out that he made the Academies. Which, I won't lie, is a pretty stupid take. The Academies train older teenagers (17-21, possibly older if they allow older ppl to join) who have already been learning how to fight presumably since they were young. Ruby had presumably already had Crescent Rose for a few years by the time she was 15, and there's several combat schools to teach kids how to fight. Remnantians count as a warrior race! They HAVE to fight to survive. Even if you haven't been to an academy, it's normal to know how to fight to defend against Grimm. Controlled by Salem or not, Grimm are a constant that you NEED to fight against. The Academies just give widespread access to tools and education to learn in a safe environment filled with other hunters. They just so happen to fight off Salems Grimm forces, and unknowingly defend the Relics inside. It's a win-win-win on everyone's side. Yes, people are going to die. But they'd be MORE likely to die if a) they can't defend themselves properly b) don't have proper tools to do so or c) don't know how to fight at ALL. Thanks to the Academies, militaries don't need to be used (except Atlas). The possibility of war goes WAY down, and it's harder for the kingdoms to be actively corrupt (not impossible just less easier to be enforced). Objectively? The Academies are a GOOD thing.
Another example is people saying Oz brought RWBY and Co unwillingly into the shadow war. Which... is objectively incorrect. Qrow was the one who told Ruby about the information Cinder and Co were going to attack Haven, and Yang eventually went after her after she left. Ruby brought RNJR with her, because they all experienced trauma and reasonably wanted justice, thinking it was just Cinder behind everything. Then Qrow was the one who told RNJR roughly the truth. He didn't particularly want to, bit he relented anyways, and even then he held back information like Oz being immortal. He didn't even tell them about Salem, just that some nasty people wanted the Relics and Maiden powers and that one of them was named Salem. I guess you could count Ruby being brought into Beacon early, but even then that was the SAFEST option. If Cinder or Roman noticed her silver eyes in ep 1 and that got back to Salem, Ruby would be FUCKED. She was already involved in fighting Roman at that point, and thus would likely get targeted again, silver eyes or not. So Oz brought her in, citing her skill as the reason, while the others likely knew the truth. Qrow OR tai wouldn't have been fine with it if Oz only brought her in to put her into the circle. They would've torn him a new one. Not only that, but obviously he DIDN'T KNOW about the upcoming fall of Beacon. He genuinely thought Ruby and her team was going to be fine for the next 4 years, and when he was starting to suspect something was up, he STILL had no idea the Academy was going to be attacked during the festival. Why would he?? A direct attack isn't typical of Salem, iirc he or someone else said it themselves, especially since it had been 80 or so years since the Great War, which is implied that Salem started. Even IF he wanted to bring her in, he would've waited until after she graduated, which is what happened with STRQ and was going to happen with CVFY. Oz places an emphasis on letting them be kids for as long as possible. He only had to involve them when Qrow already told them everything. And even then, Oz repeatedly gave RWBY and JNR an out. He DID NOT WANT them involved, not yet at least. And with Pyrrha, he didn't exactly have a choice. He gave her time they didn't have, and required her to wait n think, and then needed her verbal consent WHILE BEACON WAS BEING ATTACKED. Yes telling her stressed her out, but I think if she knew the same thing could be offered to anyone else, she'd prefer to take on that burden. It wasn't fair, but it visibly pained Oz to have to give her the choice. He didn't want to, but war is never fair. He would've had to go to SOMEONE regardless.
As for Oz keeping the truth that Salem can't be killed a secret, imo, that is a very VERY hard call for anyone to make. For him it was the option of: tell them immediately and not have any allies (something he values heavily) or have them join Salem out of fear, wait first and tell them later and have them possibly freak out like Ironwood/betray him/lose hope and thus not have any allies, or never tell them so he has important allies and they possibly don't betray him or lose hope. Obviously, he chose the last option, and it's entirely possible he wanted to, eventually, tell them the truth, but we just don't know that. Of course I agree that Oz should've told his circle anyways, but for someone as traumatized and paranoid as Oz who's had to make this decision countless times, you can't exactly fault him for keeping the truth hidden. He's likely told the entire truth before and it bit him in the ass several times before he finally decided to keep it hidden. He said it himself, Leo was NOT the first nor was the last to betray him. As for not telling RWBY and Co? They're CHILDREN he's barely known for, what, a year?? And all of that he was their teacher/Headmaster who didn't often interact with them, or their mentor. He barely knew them and as far as we know, didn't get the chance to actually know and get close to them. They already knew just how dangerous Salem was from the fall of Beacon and battle of haven, plus the fact that she controls Grimm. They could've easily assumed Salem was hard to kill at LEAST since she's immortal and been around for countless thousands of years, and there's no way they thought no one tried to kill her. Oz barely knew them and they almost proved him right by nearly giving up. Plus, he was FRESHLY betrayed at that point. I'm sure yall noticed he was immediately pretty closed off due to the revelation of Leo's betrayal. He genuinely considered Leo a friend, so Oz's trauma response is to hold everyone else at arms length.
Another thing is the fact that he hid the truth from Salem as well early on in their relationship. Thing is, Jinn (a presumably reliable narrator) stated that they BOTH hid things from the other. Salem likely didn't tell him that she lied and manipulated kingdoms into turning against the gods, just that she wanted him back and the gods didn't like that bc that ABSOLUTELY would've upset Oz. Oz, knowing Salem didn't like the gods from her story, likely decided right then to keep the full truth from her, worried she wouldn't react well to it, something anyone would do. Not only that, but right after, Salem convinced, possibly manipulated, Oz into acting as a god-king with her, something he clearly didn't want to do. Jinn herself said "the hearts of men are easily swayed" as Salem convinced him to become a God-king with her. So yes, it's very possible that Salem manipulated him into doing that. "But Salem was fine with the truth later when he told her!" Yes, she was, but Oz couldn't have known that. And the whole reason he tried to leave her was because Salem was turning into a dictator tyrant, something Oz didn't want and something Salem was set on. He did overreact a little bit by bringing the kids instead of communicating with her, but it wasn't his fault that Salem immediately attacked him instead of trying to talk to him, or at least waiting until the kids were in a safe place before attacking him. Most of this wasn't Oz's fault, if any of it. Salem overreacted heavily by attacking him with the kids being react there. Had Oz and the kids lived and escaped her, they would've been TERRIFIED of Salem afterwards, traumatized by the ordeal. And it's never shown that Salem actually cared that they died, just that they "could've had freedom", blaming Oz instead. Meanwhile Oz, afterwards, spent whole LIVES drowning his sorrow and regret and trauma in alcohol, and he's clearly STILL affected by it if Salem using the silhouettes of their children is any indication, since she was likely taunting him (but also reminiscing, regardless of her feelings on the matter) and never brought up their children in any matter.
Overall I really don't think Oz is as bad as the fandom says he is. People like to think he and Salem are the same (something i might make a post on later), when they're very, very different. Oz really isn't bad, he's just traumatized and is basing current events off of past experiences. He's far from manipulative, uncaring, or really any negative adjective I've seen people describe him as. I've probably missed some things, but my point has been made I think. The fndm really likes to misinterpret Oz's character, saying he's exactly like Dumbledore, but in reality he's a subversion of characters like Dumbledore. He's a seriously good guy, and I think people miss that.

Things Beacon Students are No Longer Allowed To Do: Rule 54
54 The word “Ligma” and its variant “Ligma balls” is officially banned on campus.
54 a So are “Sugma” “Cho chon”, “Lee Condeez” and any other variation of said joke.
(While I find them annoying, why are you banning them, Qrow? - Prof. Goodwitch) (Trust me, you do NOT want to know. - Prof. Branwen) (Qrow… - Prof. Branwen) (…fine. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. - Prof. Branwen)
54 b Students are reminded that “SucOnDeez Nuts” is a joke, not an order. You are under no obligation to actually do as it says.
(What? But it’s LAW! - Cardin) (It is the Bro Code, Profsssor Goodwitch - Ren) (I was under the impression that Beacon was fine with us participating in intercourse. Has that changed? - Blake) (… - Prof. Goodwitch)
54 b i To clarify. While students can “SucOnDeez Nuts” in their off time if they choose to, they are reminded that they aren’t allowed to do it in public hallways.
(…oh. Okay yeah that’s fair. - Blake) (Thank you. - Prof. Goodwitch) (Wait, who was dumb enough to do that in a public hallway where everyone could see it? - Blake) (… - Weiss) (Weiss??? - Blake) (Look it’s the fastest way to get them to shut up with their stupid jokes, leave me alone! - Weiss) (Do I even want to know who you were doing that to? - Blake) (… - Jaune) (…somehow that doesn’t surprise me in the slightest - Blake) (In my defense, that was literally the first time I made that joke to Weiss. I was more surprised than anyone when she dragged my pants down. - Jaune) (Weiss. - Blake) (Shut UP, go blame Yang, she’s the one who started this whole dumb thing - Weiss) (Don’t drag me into this! I dragged Jaune into the teacher’s lounge for privacy before working him over! - Yang) (… - Prof. Goodwitch) (…fuck. - Yang)
54 c Students are banned from entering, let alone having private “liaisons”, in the teacher’s lounge.
(You all are disgusting. - Prof. Goodwitch) (Oh please, don’t play innocent. You know that’s not even in the top 10 raunchiest things that have happened in the teacher’s lounge. - Prof. Branwen) (… - Prof. Goodwitch) (…you…did know that…right? - Prof. Branwen)
54 d Following the recent fire in the teacher’s lounge, students and staff are now banned from using black lights anywhere on campus. Ignorance is bliss.
(Look, blacklights pick up a lot of things. It could have been blood, Glynda. There could have been a perfectly reasonable and sanitary explanation. - Ozpin) (It was everywhere. It was on the floor, the counters, the ceiling. It was on the CEILING, OZPIN. The FUCKING CEILING. Fire was the only solution. - Prof. Goodwitch)

what if qrow Fell into the ever after instead of his nieces? how would Taiyang and Raven react to that?
assuming that a) raven would be able to tell via kindred link that qrow is still alive, b) her semblance would still alert her that something has happened, and c) the news would make it to tai in timely manner. . .
denial lol. i'm pretty sure that to this day, tai is holding out hope that summer is going to walk through their front door any day now. like, realistically knowing that it's unlikely, she's not coming back... but what if, ya know? so qrow being gone, with reasons to believe he's not dead, is like. he'll return. that's qrow; he always does.
like it would take a long, long time for both tai and raven to reach the point of acceptance, fully believing that qrow isn't coming back. it might turn more into a waiting game rather than actively searching, but giving up hope quickly is not something i see happening.
that is, of course, if those three assumptions are true. if not, they might just be unaware that qrow's been missing for who-knows-how-long, only learning after the fact, and at that point it might as well be one of qrow's overexaggerated tall tales.
qrow would be having one heck of a time in the ever after though. he's been through so much, learned of so many unbelievable things, that everything he comes across there might as well happen.
think he'd get frustrated once his great plan of turning into bird and flying to the tree doesn't work, tho.

TEAM RWBY IDEAS
some ideas i have for my rewritten version of RWBY MAIDENS Maidens can only control environments and the weather. Also they can change their surroundings, from a high tech hallway to a red maple forest (like an illusion). (so no sword making or whatever just purely environmental) - team rwby becoming the Maidens a. Ruby becomes the Spring maiden (can control flora and wind) b. Weiss becomes the Winter maiden (can create snow storms and ice powers) c. Blake becomes the Fall maiden (tornados and clouds/rain) d. Yang becomes the Summer maiden (heatwaves and thunderstorms) Maidens can used their combined powers to make combos, Fall and Winter making it hail or Fall and Summer making a dessert storm. YANG Technically she shouldve graduated at this point, however she chooses not to, after finding out that Oz invited Ruby (15) to train at Beacon Academy, she managed to convince Oz to let her redo her senior year at the academy to support Ruby. JAUNE the Jaune we know will be put in the bully team from the 1st vol, my version would be more of an androgynous-femme presenting guy BLAKE & RUBY they can make their own little book club :) BLAKE & WEISS I think Blake would stand up for Weiss (and the other way around), especially if Jacques would come to visit Beacon, after finding out that Weiss went to Beacon instead of Atlas Academy. Before Jacques would be able to hit Weiss, Blake would step in and put him in hsi place. BEACON, HAVEN, SHADE & ATLAS ACADEMY DRESS CODE Most strict in dress (1 being most strict to 4 least strict about it/only cares about results) 1. Atlas (has to wear assigned uniform, miss a tie or want to wear pants instead of a skirt? get expelled scrub (also the most discriminatory school)) 2. Shade 3. Haven 4. Beacon (''male student wears a skirt? ok and?'') Beacon Academy ''Dress Code'' Honestly they dont care if you bribe a fashion student or get a tailor to make a longer skirt or flared pants, as long that it has the Beacon Academy Pattern™️ and ''wearing'' the tie, anything goes
ADAM (vs YANG & BLAKE) Making him more obsessive and weird by wearing Blake's tail (which he cut of before she escaped) as a belt. Also making him more Bull than original, because to this day i still dont see what makes him a Faunus. Like the black colored horns are cute but those can be easily mistaken for colored hair. Fall of Beacon (Adam vs Yang & Blake Round 1) Same story but instead of Yang immediately being defeated after getting her arm cut off, she powers through and uses her firey semblance the stop the bleeding in her arm, while Blake keeps up the good fight. After the bleeding stops Yang steps back into the ring to give Adam a burn scar. After losing too much blood Yang caves in while tries to keep her on her feet. Adam also takes Yangs severed arm Comm Tower (Adam vs Yang & Blake Round 2) Adam teases Yang by throwing her severed arm at her, but shrugs it off and tells him he can keep it. QROW & RAVEN Instead of turning into normal looking Ravens/Crows, they turn into a Nevermore look alike. Originally a power given by Oz, now turned curse by Salem. Both Qrow and Raven now constantly have to fight for control with their Grimm halves. Qrow has partially given up, hence the drinking, so his hands look like bird claws and his body is covered in feathers. Raven keeps her distance to avoid hurting anyone. Unbeknownst to them Salem is using their eyes to spy on Oz. SALEM/White Fang im not sure of this idea but instead of the White Fang (which will be renamed to something else) being a equal rights group, they're followers of Salem, the False Goddess, who gives promises that by serving her, they can save their world/make their world better. And that the Grimm exist to ''get rid of the bad people/sinners'' However i think there is a sort of White Fang group but only in Atlas where the most hate crimes, slavery and discrimination happens. As SDC and other companies in Atlas use Faunus for entertainment (for example Bull fighting for Adam) or for slavery. Yes that would imply that Blake was once a follower of Salem's, but turned around after the train incident. TEAM STRQ this might be the worst idea but hear me out. Team STRQ was a polyamorous quad. (in this version Raven and Qrow are >NOT< related) After Summer's death (at assuming Salem's hand), there was a lot of trust issues after, considering neither Qrow nor Raven told Tai what actually happened, and they slowly drifted apart but they all stayed in touch or checked up on the kids and Tai, Qrow would visit more often, while Raven stayed away for their (R&Y) safety. Raven and Qrow keep butting heads cuz they blame eachother for Summer's death/not saving her, but deep down they still care for eachother. Both Ruby and Yang are their kids (its Remnant they can like make kids in a tube or something). Yang has Qrow's alcohol problems (they sometimes drink together) Ruby has or had Raven's selflessness well thats all the ideas i have, nothing solid, just seeing what sticks to the wall. Admittedly the STRQ one might be a bit out there, considering Qrow and Raven are well known as siblings, and yes its weird as fuck idea to have them being/or were together as a couple. But if you remove the context of them being siblings, and see them having arguments, they argue as if they're a divorced couple. Also Qrow is more of a dad than Tai, protecting the gang when they're going on a trip, when Ruby is 15-16 yrs old (in the actual show). And generally being there for the gang. Even before Vol 4 Tai didnt even visit once, but was able to send Zwei. Qrow stayed the whole time, hanging out with Ruby and Yang but i dont remember in vol 1-3 Ruby or Yang ever calling Tai, y'know their dad? But again these are all ideas, nothing solid, just me rambling about RWBY stuff, uh uhm.... are these good ideas? most likely not feedback and criticism is appreciated :) my team rwby redesign v

That makes me question what was the point of the Atlesian Knights. I guess Ironwood only wanted mindless robots that wouldn't ask questions to work for him.
you know how in Jurassic Park, Hammond keeps talking about how he 'spared no expense' when it came to the running of the park, and the film reveals some massive, gaping problems with the management because the IT system was run by one guy that they didn't even pay well enough that he was willing to sabotage InGen for their competitors?
it's like that. the image of security and safety and Atlas superiority (prioritising the aesthetics over practicality for. robot soldiers. 'a little less scary' why is that a priority to you James? where are you deploying the robots in places that civilians might be scared of them?) and 'removing the human element from the battlefield' was more important than designing those things to be able to take a hit, or programming them to actually use what they're working with (we see in volume 8 when Watts takes control of one that they're capable of sprinting and have explosives in their chests that can be remote detonated, which would both be really useful if you're sending them into Grimm territory. but no, it's always a constant slow march, and they're down in one hit to a Grimm. or a civilian armed with a trash can. or Qrow ripping them apart with his bare hands - plus they were likely made by whichever military contractor bid the lowest)
the only times we see them used to any degree of effectiveness was a) with older models which were clunkier and more durable, b) in larger numbers and c) within enclosed spaces (Black trailer where they were able to pressure Blake and Adam for a minute within the train car, and in the opening to JLxRWBY part 2 when the girls were trying to connect a portal to Earth when there were more deploying than they were destroying)
it's also just a demonstration of how fucked the priorities were in Atlas that the fragile robot drones were primarily deployed for the military when there were much better jobs they were suited for (like. Dust mining. which is repeatedly shown to be horrendously dangerous and life-threatening. cheaply produced robots that can be piloted remotely would reduce the risk to life and limb, not to mention the established long term health risks inherent to Dust mining)
but no. Ironwood doesn't trust anyone so we get his papier-mâché tin cans consistently wasting military money, which is super funny when it keeps backfiring on him
#rwb/y#it is genuinely hilarious that the only time they're shown to be remotely effective is when literally anyone but the military controls them

Oscar: ...Well, I'm gonna go now, so... try not to go all-
Ruby: Oscar, wait! You... You really saved me out there today. And... I really, really like you... So... Would it be okay to ask you to come inside so I can... give you a reward?
Oscar: Uh... Sure!
Oscar: T H A T S O U N D S N I C E . . .
--------------------------------------------------
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
Oscar: Oh god, oh god! (Peeks 'round corner) Circumcision is NOT supposed to be foreplay! (Runs) I need to hide!
Oscar: (Opens door)
In that moment... I had no idea... how opening that door... would change my entire life...
Oscar: (Sees mountains of) French Toast?
Ruby: (Behind Oscar) YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT.
Oscar: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
--------------------------------------------------
Qrow: ...So, uh... You kids have a fight?
Ruby: (Covered in blood)
Oscar: (Head rolls off)
Ruby: ...
Oscar: ...No.
Ruby: (Giggles, Smiles)

Rules: You will be given a word. Share one sentence/excerpt from your wip(s) that start with each letter of that word.
@shadow-pixelle tagged me with ECHO, so congrats - have some 'Got a Light?' (my RWBY fic) snippets! And, to have some extra fun, since they're all from the same fic, I'll get one snippet from each of the first two books I've written this fic in and two from the current book (because it's the biggest), and you'll get the sentences in the order I wrote them... but not necessarily in the order they'll come in the fic, because I'm writing non-chronologically. ;D Enjoy!
E
"Easy for you to say," Jaune gives up on meditating (because he's weak) to glare at Roman, "You're probably just saying that because you had a stupid one, like- like bad luck or making your pockets bigger or something!"
...Branwen had flinched at the first suggestion. Interesting. Neo'll have to look into that. More importantly, however, Roman has frozen in place, dust crystal fallen to the ground beside him. He stares straight up into the sky unmoving for a good twenty seconds before he lets his arm fall across his eyes with a distraught groan.
"Dangit, that second one actually sounds like an amazing- that would have been so useful for shoplifting or, hells, just storing extra ammo without ruining the lines of my suit- dammit, now I'm sad, thanks a lot."
C
"Consider: would any of you say you are quite the same people now that you were at the beginning of the school year? How about ten years ago?" he smiles at the range of reactions this elicits. "To me, it is much the same, albeit on a far larger scale. It seems as though we each carry a certain amount of... ourselves, for lack of a better word, with us to each new life.
"For example, it may surprise you to know that, in regards to myself, while I have heard many times that I seem to have gained a certain level of maturity overnight when my memories and powers are unlocked, oddly little in my personality or mindset of my new life seem to change beyond that. I will confess, it inspires a certain amount of curiosity these days, whenever the end of a current life draws near, as to what new myself I will have become the next time my memories return."
H
"Hey, what about all the nice things you were gonna say to Pyrrha?!"
"They will be formatted as an extremely flattering eulogy!!!"
Qrow is drawn away from this amusing interaction by Neo, who has removed a glove and stolen a fistful of bacon with her bare hand, wiggling it enticingly at Qrow with a big smile.
"I feel like I'm being mocked," he states, examining it with each eye suspiciously.
"You're not," Torchwick says, finally calm again and theatrically wiping his eye, "She just likes watching birds eat. Used to sneak into kitchens at restaurants so she could get table scraps for it."
...eh, fair enough. Qrow obliges and daintily tugs a strip of bacon free with his beak, holding it with one claw to peck at. Neo beams.
O
"Oh, um- yes! He says... 'Thinking of mew.'"
Ruby glances up from skimming her texts to see Weiss staring blankly ahead.
"...he's a dork," she says, voice dazed, "He's an enormous dork."
"Weiss-" Uncle Qrow groans, only for Jaune to hold his hand up.
"Don't bother, Mr. Branwen, I've got this."
"Kid, it's Qrow."
Jaune ignores him, going to put a steadying hand on Weiss's shoulder. "Look, I'm sorry you have to find out this way, but the thing about guys is... we're all dorks. And Neptune is our king."
"...I see." Weiss nods, and Ruby goes back to her own texts, "Is it a bad sign that I still like him, even though he's flawed?"
"I mean, he didn't realize you wanted to keep seeing him after the dance until you cried at him for flirting with other girls," Nora comments, "You kinda already knew that he wasn't perfect."
"I suppose that's true... In that case, I'm going to respond in kind! Nora, I require your assistance!"
---
(Told you guys it's not as dire as my research subject list makes it sound!)
I'll be tagging @fullbattleregalia and @elektricangel, along with anyone else who wants to play - your word is LIFE (because my fic's about Roman coming back as a ghost and I'm funny).

James Ironwood: Or how not to retool a character.
Of all the characters and storylines bungled and wasted in RWBY, Ironwood may be the most contentious. (and that's saying something given the franchise). Some claim he was 'the real hero' of the show, others claim him nothing but a rat-shaped pustule on the devils anus. Below the cut is my take on the character and how he was written: A character who, when initially presented as a Red Herring antagonist did his job excellently... But who, when recycled for a 'fall from grace'-story was never given the grace required for that to work.
It should be noted that, early RWBY didnt do a lot of worldbuilding for Atlas as a Kingdom, beyond generic buzwords about discipline and hierarchical order, that were deliberately designed to sound fascist/dictatorship-coded. As such he's initially presented in the beacon era as a presumable dictator with a literal iron fist, and even the scenes that present him as a member/ally of the Oz-spiracy all emphasise him as the obvious traitor in their midst (serving as a red herring to protect Lionheart, who didnt even exist yet) Combined with the fact that Salem hadnt been written into existence yet, He was presented as the most likely contestant for the 'who does Cinder work for' mystery. The implication to the audience being that Cinder was an Atlesian Agent using the Fang for false flag purposes to justify his bringing his army for purposes of, presumably, an eventual invasion. Its only in the climax of S3, when Cinder hijacks the robots that we're informed she doesnt work for him, and it is at that point we realise he was only a disagreeable ally. Up until that point 'Cinder works for Ironwood' was the leading theory. And the very second his innocense is established and the curtain is drawn to reveal Salem's existence. Ironwood has served his only narrative purpose and gets booted from the show. But after 4 seasons of roadtrip, it was inevitable that they'd get to Atlas, the place where this character held power. So it was time to bring him back, and without the ability for him to red-herring a second time. That means they needed to retool him, give him a new narrative purpose. And they chose a classic: 'The heroes fall from grace'.
But to do this retool, they needed to accomplish 2 things: 1-Remind everyone Cinder wasnt actually working for him, (should be easy) and that the manipulations the audience was initially meant to assume he was doing in the Beacon Era are wildly out of character. 2-Establish that he was never the dictator they wanted the audience to initially assume he was.
Unfortunately, while they undeniably tried, they (in my opinion) failed before they ever started. Because while we hear about the elections quickly and are thus quickly informed of his not-being-a-dictator... A-He immediately, as his very first lines delivered in-person (not as a TV screen), Introduce his complaints that other countries wont let him put his murderdroids in them. (a reasonable concern on the other countries' part given what happened to Vale, especially as we know for a fact that he never updated his firewalls in the aftermath of them all getting hacked.)
B-Introduce the 'My dissenters keep being mysteriously murdered but I swear im only being framed'-plotline. (yes its true that he's being framed, and we'll get evidence later but we're initially meant to take him on his word here and evidence is only provided after E.) C-Follow AB imediately with exposition on 'operation unite the world', D-Have Qrow point this out would cause a repeat of the Fall of Beacon, (not necesarily bad) E-which Ironwood then answers by saying 'yes, that is the point. It means they'll have no ability to refuse his putting his armies inside their kingdoms' and well... this proves that the allegations in the beacon-era werent so much a 'i would never' as a 'not me this time' situation. Tenet A of his 'hero retool' is broken, and we're like... 2 episodes in And Retool tenet 2 doesnt last long either, because: F- At the dustmine, they have him tell Jaques Schnee explicitly on screen that; Though the council is democratically elected, the council has no actual real power. Goven that the council lacks the ability to deal with or even know of matters of military secrecy or strategic import. But that he, as general, can unilaterally and without oversight or accountability make any decisions in matters of military secrecy, including deciding unilaterally what even is considered a military asset. The entire plot of this season hinges on the simple truth that the council James and Robin are looking seeking to be elected to, has no functional power. Because the Council only makes decisions if the general chooses to allow them to make the decision (and even then, the general has 2/5 votes so needs a unanimous voting block), the mine-scene establishes that in all ways that truly matter, He has always been the dictator he was presented as in S1-3.
If either points A, E or F were moved to S8, or even mildly obscured rather then said explicitly in center-spotlight, his hero retool could've worked. But given that this all happens in the first half of S7... He literally couldnt escape the allegations of the beacon era. And without grace? there was nowhere for him to fall. The central conceit of the Atlas Arc, failed before it even started.
--- Now an ending note before the Ironwood Stans show up: I do believe the character, as written in S7-8 was presented as true in their desire to protect the kingdoms he was seeking to annex from Salem.
But that does not justify that his strategy to accomplish this protection was to deliberately engineer the apocalypse, so he could politically justify an act of global conquest.

Your Song
Whitley: Neon? C-can we speak?
Whitley: …in private…?
Neon: Sure, snowflake? Is everything okay…?
Whitley: I…um, well…
Whitley: …please, just come with me…
Neon: What could Whitley want? He seems really serious and preoccupied…Could something be wrong with him? 🤔
Neon: …wait, could something be wrong with ME? Is his family giving him trouble for dating a Faunus? 😨
Neon: Oh, no! Is he going to break up with me?! I’ve had boyfriends before, but…I think I really like him! I don’t wanna lose my little snowflake! 😭
Neon: *anxiously starts replaying every breakup she has ever had in her head, getting more and more upset and convinced that her relationship is collapsing* 😰
Whitley: *takes Neon’s hands, interrupting her train of thought*
Whitley: *guides Neon to a chair*
Whitley: *climbs up on a small raised platform with a piano*
Neon: 😶
Whitley: …Neon…I haven’t had many friends…or ANY relationships…
Whitley: …but through everything that’s happened in the past few months, when my father was arrested, the fall of Atlas, and my family losing everything when we came to Vacuo, you’ve been there for me!
Whitley: *sits down in front of piano* I suppose, what I’m trying to say is…
Whitley: *starts playing* 🎶…It’s a little bit funny…this feeling inside…I’m not one of those who can easily hide…🎶
Whitley: 🎶…I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do…My gift is my song and this one’s for you…!🎶
Neon: *watching with her mouth open, heart fluttering* …woah…little boyfriend has really gotten good at singing…! 😦
Whitley: *gaining confidence* 🎶…and you can tell everybody this is your song…It may be quite simple but, now that it’s done…🎶
Whitley: 🎶 I hope you don’t mind…I hope you don’t mind…that I put down in words…🎶
Whitley: *turns to look at Neon while playing* 🎶…how wonderful life is…while you’re in the world…!🎶
Neon: Holy crap, I’ve heard stories of people being serenaded but I didn’t think anyone actually DID that! I think I’m about to physically swoon! 😳
Whitley: *looks into Neon’s eyes while still playing piano* Neon, I’ve never felt like this about anyone before…
Whitley: So much has happened, with the fall of Atlas, the vault, and trying to rebuild in Vacuo, all while Salem is out there threatening all of us…
Whitley: …I suppose what I’m trying to say is, I don’t know what the future will be like…
Whitley: …but it would be…so amazing…if you were in it with me…! 😖
Neon: …did…
Neon: …did you just…propose to me…?! 😳
Whitley: *accidentally mashes piano keys* I-I-I-I-?! 😨
Whitley: …I…I think…I did…?
Neon: …
Whitley: …
Elsewhere…
Winter: *in the middle of planning strategy with Qrow, Raven, and Theodore* The north wall remains a weak point in our defenses, but by freeing up some spare brick from older construction projects, we should be able to-*interrupted by Scroll call*
Winter: Hm? Whitley? Are you all right-
Whitley: SISTER I NEED YOUR HELP!! I PERFORMED A SONG FOR NEON AND IT WORKED TOO WELL AND I ACCIDENTALLY PROPOSED TO HER!!!
Winter: …
Winter: …what…?
Still elsewhere…
Flynt: *chilling on a bench, feels his Scroll vibrate*
Flynt: Hello! Go for Flyn-
Neon: FLYNT THIS IS AN EMERGENCY WHITLEY PROPOSED TO ME WITH THE SWEETEST SONG EVER AND I’M FREAKING OUT HERE WHAT DO I DOOOOOO?!?!?
Flynt: First thing’s first, take five minutes to calm down…
Flynt: …and for my eardrums to heal…
Flynt: …and then we’ll talk through this!

Generate 10 headcanons for my muse and I'll either accept (✔️) or reject (❌️) them
James only eats organic food ❌/✔️ He's not picky nor he cares, but that's probably the basic food they have in Remnant, I'd guess.
James can't roller skate for the life of them ❌ It's close enough to ice skating and he used to skate a lot.
James reads too much fanfic to be healthy ❌ Probably doesn't know what a fanfic is.
James likes board games, but no one else wants to play with them ✔️ Board games are fun, but not to anyone matched against a strategist, who can calculate way too many variables.
James speaks in riddles involuntarily ✔️ A stretch but among friends he tends to speak before thinking through how it sounds. It's fun mishaps c:<
James crashed a car into a tree once ❌ He probably would, but he limited driving after Beacon as he'd rather not cause any accident nor has time for it.
James has a younger sister ❌ He's an only child, but in one verse he has a brother! In this house we love and cherish Alec Ironwood
James will be last boss in Elden Ring DLC ✔️ Yeah, probably. A tormented soul that tried so hard and got so far, but in the end...
James sings in the shower ❌ He might humm or sing when he's happy - so hardly ever. And never in the shower.
James was dropped out of a window as a child ✔️ He jumped out of a ground floor windows more than once. Doors are too far away, so... And he got thrown out of the window in his office once. Qrow threw them both out during a bad argument turning violent. (Old, old, thread, not just hc xD Always some level of unhinged with my writing lol)
