Mason was, admittedly, not the smartest guy. He struggled through school, both here and in the states, and he would probably forget his head somewhere if it wasn’t firmly attached.
But kpop stars? Even ones from disbanded groups? No. Mason knew those very well.
It was almost comical how encyclopedic of knowledge he had on kpop. He knew song lyrics, he knew the years of comebacks, and he especially knew the faces of members. He never forgot a face, and he knew he had seen that one before.
That was Niel of Nexus.
“Love Equation” was a fun bop and Mason knew the arm motions of the choreography by heart, so much so that seeing Niel after the meeting made his arms start to make little movements to the beat playing in his head. It was too soon after the first meeting, but Mason made a mental note to talk to him before rehearsal started for their team.
That morning, Mason waited patiently inside the rehearsal room a half hour early. Sure, he would have done that anyway (he had to make a good first impression), but this killed two birds with one stone.
When Niel finally arrived, Mason tried to keep his smiling to a minimum, but was failing as he waved enthusiastically before remembering huh, maybe bowing was the right way to go. He bowed before introducing himself. “Hello! I’m Lee Mason, and I’m really excited to work with you!” He brought up his head before adding “I’m a Nexus fan.

Am I the only one who feels very…off about the end of the writer’s strike?
Here’s what I mean.
1. The tentative deal met only last for a short amount of time, three years. So my thinking is that when the strike is over and the WGA and studios meet again, the studios are gonna try pulling their shit once more and another strike is going to go on, leading to another settlement. I can just see Hollywood pulling a PR stunt where they in the long-term try to play off that the WGA are a bunch of "whiny babies who are never satisfied" or some shit like that. Call me a pessimist, but I feel some long-game BS stuff is being set up here.
2. The actors have no contract. To me, this is coming off as the studios making a con that's deliberately weakening the solidarity between the writers and actors because one group is still striking and the other no longer can.
a. It makes the actors' strike suddenly so much weaker because their biggest co-strikers are no longer striking, and I'm worries that with those weakened forces, studios are going to use that as a means of more efficiently stopping the actors' attempts at getting a fair deal. They can starve them out faster and eventually force them to takes those AI deals.
b. I feel like the studios are trying to instill an "f-you, got mine" mentality that's going to further divide them as the writers get back to work while the actors keep striking. I mean, I don't doubt that the writers are going keep pulling for the actors to get a fair deal, but it's going to be a priority that needs to be juggled in the face of getting back to work, and I worry that there is going to be an inevitable resentment built up that was completely calculated by the studios to happen.
c. In the public eye, there are more actors that are prolific and wealthy than writers. Now, obviously, both are paid terribly and treated worse, but by that I just mean that it's a lot easier for the general public to name ten actors than it is to name ten writers. With the WGA, there was this clear underdog dynamic between the writers and the studios, making it very easy for people to take the writers' side in the strike. However, so much of the court of public opinion thinks that actors are rich and famous, and I worry that having them alone is going to risk a lot of the general public turning on the actors because of that incorrect presumption.
Obviously, the guilds leaders are smart, and I really want to believe that these things and others have been thought through before a writers' deal was reached, but there's a lot about this deal that doesn't feel right to me.
I can't be the only one whose thinking of these things and worrying, right?!
Hey, @niel-gayman and @wilwheaton, given that you two are industry professionals, can I get your takes on this, please? I don't want to risk spreading misinformation, but I just can't let go of my apprehension for this agreement and don't want to stay silent about these worries.

When you talk about Philippino history and then Roman history, as a Venezuelan it's been making me think about our history and like, I've always thought there's a lot of similarity there but now it's like...its so similar. Your house is haunted too! I always think about how we won wars against the colonizers but their ghosts are still there, and they still sit at the dinner table with us every night. Your work is so cool, I feel like I can extend that train of thought further through time. I've never been interested in Rome but now I kinda am!
Venezuela 🤝the Philippines: being haunted houses (colonized by Spain)
also that is so SO real, the ghosts really are with us!! THEY ARE AT!!! OUR DINNER TABLES!!!!! ngl, once you start noticing it, it's impossible to NOT notice how they've crawled into the spaces and just. stayed.
ancient Rome is so weird for it too, because if you asked me about it, I wouldn't immediately put ancient Rome down for haunting the Philippines, except for the fact that like Catholicism, it's fucking everywhere. it's gotten in the cracks and spaces between the walls. On the stage of theater, Nadres' Hanggang dito na lamang at maraming salamat: the main character is named after Julius Caesar
Closet Queeries, J. Niel C. Garcia
and so many people are named after figures from ancient Rome (I know enough Mark Anthonys I've run out of differentiating nicknames for everyone) that it rivals Catholic saints for naming conventions. neo classical architecture had it's moment in the sun in Manila, our ilustrados brought some of it back when they returned from Spain to call for reform, and then independence, and I am struggling to hold back a plague-infection comparison about that. like, something else crept in with Spain, and like Spain's ghosts, it Did Not Leave.
but on the other hand! there's a long, centuries long, tradition of using the events of the Fall of the Republic to discourse, discuss, to vent or call for action, current events. it provides a interlocutor when something hurts too much to say directly, it provides a stage to explore a tragedy that echoes in our own histories, it gives a script to voice an ideal that a government might otherwise put down. how many centuries have we used Brutus (and Cassius) to rail against Tyranny, and how many centuries with equal enthusiasm have people used Julius Caesar as a martyr to justify the rights of Kings and Empires? these things are equally as important (in a different way) from the ancient events that actually transpired. (this specific topic, of Brutus & the Assassination of Caesar and it's literary revivals in history, are the focus of The Brutus Revival, Manfredi Piccolomini)
and the cores of these things conflict with each other, but in that friction, it's like there's an invitation to sit down and think for a minute. to look back at history and feel it's immediacy in the present.
ANYWAY I got carried away, but I am glad!! that my stuff could make Rome interesting!!! I hope that you find new doors of thoughts to explore!!!!!!!
#holding this ask in my heart forever thank u for sending this anon#ask tag#idk sometimes i draw goofy shit because its fun. and gay stuff because I Like Men ofc im going to explore things thru that lens#but also. i feel a little like im trying to look at this lurking ghost of imperialism without. addressing it directly#my love for spectacle and drama directly against knowing that the historical horror is not. that far removed. heugh.#so this meant a lot to me!! i feel seen in a good way. thank u again!

However misshapen we might feel His arms are not shortened.
You are not beyond the reach of God’s love – He will never stop loving us
When you can’t feel God’s love, we shouldn’t consider the possibility that it’s because God has stopped loving us until after the mountains and hills have gone.
There are different ways of feeling and receiving divine love.

Feeling the rain on your skin, or a breeze
Music
Keeping a journal
Ask people you trust to share how they feel divine connection
If you could choose a place for you and Jesus to meet – He may have already found you there.

The church is not a location or a building – it’s the people
The church is an instrument
Keeping our covenants provides us access to God and transforms us
The church is special only if it is built on His gospel.
The church enables access to God’s power because it’s authorized by Him to teach His gospel and offer His ordinances
Jesus Christ wants nothing more than for us to repent and come unto Him so He can sanctify us. He is relentless and unwavering.
Immerse yourself more fully in the church and the gospel – this is God’s dynamite and with it He will transform us
Elder David P. Homer 70
We have a loving Father in heaven who will care for us wherever we are no matter the circumstances
The boundaries between right and wrong are not for us to define – they were already established by God
While some things may depend on context, not everything does.
Don’t be surprised if our personal views are not initially in harmony with the teachings of God’s prophets. – in time you will receive more spiritual clarity
If we heed God’s word, we will receive more. If we ignore God’s counsel, we will receive less and less until we have none. This does not mean that God’s will is wrong, just that we have lost the capacity to understand it.
D&C 6:36
Look unto the Lord before acting; our faith will overcome our concerns.
Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith.
Don’t let doubt stop us from seeing God’s divine gifts in our lives.

I finally have some time, so I decided to make some portraits of PCs (And Esmerelda) from our campaign
Starting from the top
🌸Saffine🌸 Our cute half-drow warlock (Who was killed by Rahadin in the last session :c)
✨Niel✨ Looking almost like a copy of Esher half-elf bard
🔥Nemeia🔥Tieflieng paladin of vengeance who joined us recently (And has a crush on Esmerelda)
💥Asta💥A teenage monk who is just learning the world after leavin the monastery
❄Mal❄ Harsh dragonborn ranger who became a group mom (and is addicted to dream pastries)
I don't think I need to introduce Esmerelda to anyone. She joined the team at the same time as Nemeia (Which may have had minimal, tiny, little impact on the feelings of our tieflieng)

Thank you for your service (posting about reading the Laudna book so that I can confirm it's something I don't have interest in)
glad to be of service. you know, famously, one of Niels Bohr's most scathing critiques was "this isn't right, it isn't even wrong" and I feel this describes this book. Like it's certainly not good but it's not car-crash bad either, it's just kind of like. ah you wrote this at 3 am the night it was due and I have to give you a C- because technically it achieves the bare minimum, anyway, onto better things.

Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated movie “Oppenheimer,” set for release July 21, 2023, depicts J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. But while the Manhattan Project wouldn’t have been possible without the work of many accomplished female scientists, the only women seen in the movie’s trailer are either hanging laundry, crying or cheering the men on.The only women featured in the official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ are crying, hanging laundry or supporting the men.
As a physics professor who studies ways to support women in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – fields and a film studies professor who worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood, we believe the trailer’s depiction of women reinforces stereotypes about who can succeed in science. It also represents a larger trend of women’s contributions in science going unrecognized in modern media.
Lise Meitner: A pioneering role model in physics
The Manhattan Project would not have been possible without the work of physicist Lise Meitner, who discovered nuclear fission. Meitner used Einstein’s E=MC² to calculate how much energy would be released by splitting uranium atoms, and it was that development that would prompt Einstein to sign a letter urging President Franklin Roosevelt to begin the United States’ atomic research program.
Einstein called Meitner the “Madame Curie of Germany” and was one of a pantheon of physicists, from Max Planck to Niels Bohr, who nominated Meitner for a Nobel Prize 48 times during her lifetime.
Meitner never won. Instead, the prize for fission went to Otto Hahn, her male lab partner of 30 years in Berlin. Hahn received the news of his nomination under house arrest in England, where he and other German scientists were being held to determine how far the Third Reich had advanced with its atomic program.
Of Jewish descent, Meitner had been forced to flee the Nazis in 1938 and refused to use this scientific discovery to develop a bomb. Rather, she spent the rest of her life working to promote nuclear disarmament and advocating for the responsible use of nuclear energy.
Meitner was not the only woman who made a significant contribution during this time. But the lack of physics role models like Meitner in popular media leads to real-life consequences. Meitner doesn’t appear as a character in the film, as she was not part of the Manhattan Project, but we hope the script alludes to her groundbreaking work.
A lack of representation
Only around 20% of the undergraduate majors and Ph.D. students in physics are women. The societal stereotypes and biases, expectation of brilliance, lack of role models and chilly culture of physics discourage many talented students from historically marginalized backgrounds, like women, from pursuing physics and related disciplines.
Societal stereotypes and biases influence students even before they enter the classroom. One common stereotype is the idea that genius and brilliance are important factors to succeed in physics. However, genius is often associated with boys, and girls from a young age tend to shy away from fields associated with innate brilliance.
Studies have found that by the age of 6, girls are less likely than boys to believe they are “really, really smart.” As these students get older, often the norms in science classes and curricula tend not to represent the interests and values of girls. All of these stereotypes and factors can influence women’s perception of their ability to do physics.
Research shows that at the end of a yearlong college physics course sequence, women with an “A” have the same physics self-efficacy as men with a “C”. A person’s physics self-efficacy is their belief about how good they are at solving physics problems – and one’s self-efficacy can shape their career trajectory.
Women drop out of college science and engineering majors with significantly higher grade-point averages than men who drop out. In some cases, women who drop out have the same GPA as men who complete those majors. Compared to men, women in physics courses feel significantly less recognized for their accomplishments. Recognition from others as a person who can excel in physics is the strongest predictor of a student’s physics identity, or whether they see themselves as someone who can excel in physics.
More frequent media recognition of female scientists, such as Meitner, could vicariously influence young women, who may see them as role models. This recognition alone can boost young women’s physics self-efficacy and identity.
When Meitner started her career at the beginning of the 20th century, male physicists made excuses about why women had no place in a lab – their long hair might catch fire on Bunsen burners, for instance. We like to believe we have made progress in the past century, but the underrepresentation of women in physics is still concerning.
Diversity as an asset to science
If diverse groups of scientists are involved in brainstorming challenging problems, not only can they devise better, future-oriented solutions, but those solutions will also benefit a wider range of people.
Individuals’ lived experiences affect their perspectives – for example, over two centuries ago, mathematician Ada Lovelace imagined applications far beyond what the original inventors of the computer intended. Similarly, women today are more likely to focus on applications of quantum computers that will benefit their communities. Additionally, physicists from Global South countries are more likely to develop improved stoves, solar cells, water purification systems or solar-powered lamps. The perspectives that diverse groups bring to science problems can lead to new innovations.
Our intention is not to disparage the “Oppenheimer” movie, but to point out that by not centering media attention on diverse voices – including those of women in physics like Meitner – filmmakers perpetuate the status quo and stereotypes about who belongs in physics. Additionally, young women continue to be deprived of exposure to role models who could inspire their academic and professional journeys'

It's the weekend! So the Subjects go out on the town! Pascal wanted to buy some clothes, so we stopped at the clothing store first and bought some bits for the kids. Then, we went down to this spanish restaurant I built (which I am yet to name).
Bonus Erin stanky-legging her way into the venue because, hey, zombies need to eat too.

Earth Day 2024
April 21, 2024, update: . . . " the average global temperature on Earth has increased by at least 1.2° Celsius (1.9° Fahrenheit) since 1880 (it increased 0.4° Celsius since 2016). There is only 0.3° Celsius of increase left before we hit the first tier of cataclysmic thresholds, according to environmental scientists.
According to an ongoing temperature analysis led by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), "the average global temperature on Earth has increased by at least 1.2° Celsius (1.9° Fahrenheit) since 1880 (it increased 0.4° Celsius since 2016). The majority of the warming has occurred since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15 to 0.20°C per decade. . . . . The data reflect how much warmer or cooler each region was compared to the base period of 1951-1980. (The global mean surface air temperature for that period was 14°C (57°F), with an uncertainty of several tenths of a degree.)"
Adding to this is the growing number of methane sinkholes, each releasing several gigatons of gas per day. This growing phenomenon is changing all the current climate projections. Indeed, we might already have reached the climate tipping point.
There was a time when we believed that we were the center of the universe and that we should have dominion over the Earth. But then Copernicus came along, who asserted that the Sun is indeed the center of our solar system, the Moon being the only body that revolved around the Earth. I'm sure you know that this resulted in a bit of an uproar. As for the dominion idea, our use of resources, overhunting, and factory farming of animals has contributed to climate change and the current sixth extinction. Watch Marvin Gaye's video, Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology), released in 1971.
The following two photos show a contrast between Greenland's Tunu Glacier in 1933 and 2013. This melt-back is characteristic of ice all around the world, though melt-back varies widely, depending on location.

The Greenland Ice Sheet - 80 years of climate change seen from the air.
/ Bjørk, Anders Anker; Kjær, Kurt H.; Larsen, Nicolaj Krog; Kjeldsen, Kristian Kjellerup; Khan, Shfaqat Abbas; Funder, Svend Visby; Korsgaard, Niels Jákup. 2014. Abstract from 44th International Arctic Workshop, Boulder, Colorado, United States.
It wasn't so long ago that Carl Sagan and climate scientists started sounding the alarm that we were going down a dangerous path. Subsequent climate data has revealed that those early projections vastly underestimated what was happening, since we now know that climate change is not a linear but an exponential process. That is, it happens faster and faster over time.
Via Voyager 1 (click to enlarge)
The now famous photograph of Earth as a pale blue dot was taken on February 14, 1990 by the deep space probe, Voyager 1, from a record distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles). The more recent
Via Cassini
photograph was taken by the deep space probe, Cassini. Though more striking with Saturn in the foreground, it also shows how Earth is but a spec in the cosmos. As Sagan said in his book: Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. (Carl Sagan, The Pale Blue Dot, 1994)
People often say we have to save the Earth. Not so! The Earth will go on just fine without us. The issue is preserving the current biosphere that supports us and the other higher vertebrates. There will always be life on the planet so long as there's liquid water. As I present every year, here is my fictionalized account of our worst scenario. Let's do better!
