"It's a process of really digging, and I enjoy it."
Thirty years ago Mario, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez created Love and Rockets. Known collectively as Los Bros Hernandez, their impact on the indie cartooning scene has been immeasurable, with their respective Love and Rockets serials, shorts and other work canonized by fans and critics as sacred texts. The reverence is well-earned, but Los Bros are also just like you and me -- they love comics.
During this 30th anniversary of Love and Rockets, I thought it might be fun for readers -- who might never have the chance, otherwise -- to get an idea of what it's like to go shopping for comics with Mario Hernandez. In July we asked longtime Love and Rockets publisher Gary Groth, head of Fantagraphics, for $50 and set to spending it at Comic-Con International in San Diego earlier this year. What follows is a photo essay of our comic book shopping spree.
Tumblr media
Lassie No. 20 (1955)
I love experts; especially when their expertise dovetails with my own interests. Considering the narrow focus of those interests, I end up knowing a lot of people who know a lot about comics.
One of those people is Love and Rockets creator, Mario Hernandez. Mario shares my enthusiasm for titles published in the 1950s and '60s. These include, as brother Jaime says, "All of them..; Archie, Dennis the Menace, Marvel, DC, Harvey, Mad, Cracked, Gold Key, Dell, Tower, Warren, etc..."
Whenever I get the opportunity -- comic book conventions, mostly -- I like to tag along with Mario while he searches through the back-issue bins. I've been following him around for years now.
Tumblr media
Dell Four Color No. 529 (1953)
1/2 price boxes in the $4 range are his hunting grounds today. Mario buys a lot of these comics just for the cover. "The insides might suck," he warns.
Mario's drawn my attention to many series I would have passed over and filled in many gaps in my knowledge of the great cartoonists who made them. He always seems to know which dealers to work with, and, of course, since Mario is so well-liked by everyone he always gets a bargain.
Tumblr media
Finally, a good Tin Tin comic
Having had a peek at Jaime Hernandez's want-list before, I was anxious to read and photograph Mario's. He surprised me, though, by claiming to have no physical list. Instead, Mario claims to keep track of his collection mentally. Should he end up with doubles on an issue, it will be passed along to a friend or relation.
Tumblr media
Classics Illustrated No. 146 (1958)
I know collectors can be pretty cagey about their lists, so it may be that Mario just didn't want to share his with us. It can be frustrating to see demand drive prices up on a collection you've been trying to complete. Of course, getting a look at a renowned collector's want-list can tell you what they want, but it doesn't tell you why.
Tumblr media
TOPIX Vol. 09, No. 29 (1951)
"For three bucks, you're on a roll." - Mario Hernandez
Tumblr media
Dell Four Color No. 1261 (1961), $2.00
One of the highlights of the day was finding this copy of Rawhide with Clint Eastwood's face carefully cut out. We were pretty excited and misidentified the art on page one as being Jesse Marsh (look at that cheekbone on that right-hand profile!). Marsh is best known for his Tarzan work, but also drew many westerns.
Afterwards, Mario sent this update: The art inside that book is Dan "The real freakin' man" Spiegle. Not Jesse Marsh but a great artist in his own right. He pretty much drew almost all the live-action Disney stuff for movies and TV.
Tumblr media
HOT TIP: "They stick a lot old stuff in between the new stuff so I always look for the brown spines" - Mario Hernandez
Tumblr media
My Romantic Adventures No. 134 (1963)
"They [romance cartoonists] would do them as jams. You could see a Mike Sekowsky panel, then inked by somebody else, and then the next panel's a Gil Kane panel so they used to pass these things around." - Mario Hernandez
"Since [Mario] was the comic book buyer in the house, whatever he brought home was looked at as something new if not always liked. The only kinds of comics we didn't read were romance comics, being five boys in the house for so many years and only later a little sister showing up." - Gilbert Hernandez
Tumblr media
The Best of Dennis the Menace No. 21 (1964)
"I remember seeing one time... there was, in the next town, a used book store, and it would have a little ad in the newspaper that said 'old comics' -- or something like that -- '10 cents.' And I was like, 'I want to go to this place!'" - Mario Hernandez
Tumblr media
Mario Hernandez and Lori Graham of Graham Crackers Comics, Chicago. "This lady is making me very happy today," said Mario. Graham Crackers has been exhibiting at San Diego's Comic-Con for over 20 years and plan to be back next summer.
Tumblr media
Maybe next year I can follow collector Zack Carlson around for a while. This copy of Star-Studded Comics (1965) he found looks pretty good.
Tumblr media
All of this and $14 change. I also got a copy of Classics Illustrated No. 85 (The Sea Wolf), but would trade it in a heartbeat for that issue of Lassie at left.
Digging through longboxes with one of the architects of alternative cartooning is a thrill every nerd should experience. If you ever get the chance, DON'T BLOW IT!
-Steven Weissman for Comics Alliance, 2014.

2 and a half weeks until JC passes Cactus Jack!
It took me a little bit to figure out what you were referencing, but yes, Jimmy Carter will pass John Nance Garner as the longest-living President or Vice President in American history on September 18th. And if he is still with us on October 1st, Carter will be the first President or Vice President in American history to celebrate their 99th birthday.
And since I'm a huge dork who finds this stuff interesting, here's the big, complete list of longest-living to shortest-living Presidents and Vice Presidents in American history: (Presidents are in bold text, Vice Presidents are in italics, and those who served as both POTUS and VP are in bold italics.) A/N: Lately, I've been in a sour mood - apparently - and I got into a nasty habit to continuously hurt my boys. Then, @geralts-yenn sent me this fun little prompt - and it just had to be Mike because I've been putting that boy through it, lately, holy shit. So here! Have some more (even more) Mikey fluff...
Pairing: Mike (Hellraiser) x reader (Specifically German!reader, I guess)
Summary: When Mike comes home, you're looking to pick a fight. Until it turns out he hasn't been sneaking around. Well... Not like that, anyway.
Word count: 656
Warnings: None. A little angst. Some German...

You looked at him, tears in your eyes. Your entire vacation together hinged on what was going to come out of Mike’s mouth in response to the question you were terrified to ask. In fact, you had been scared to death to even breach the subject for weeks now, but you knew you had to. If he was the lying, cheating bastard you thought he was, he could forget about coming with you on your trip to visit your family. And he could forget about your fantastic home cooking and your fabulous ass. And about you in general. In fact... He could fuck all the way off and never return.
“What the fuck is going on with you, Mike? You haven’t been yourself lately. And the sneaking around... Are you cheating on me?” Fuck. Too many words... And did you have to sound so desperate? What happened to 'staying strong' and ‘getting to the bottom of this’ and several other girlboss power phrases your friends had thrown at you when you had discussed the situation.
“No,” Mike said, his voice lacking any emotion. “How can you even think that?”
Guilt hit you right in the gut. Hard. How could you? Mike would never do that... Would he? You had your reasons to be suspicious... Exhibit A: he had been very distant lately. Exhibit B: regular, unexplained cash withdrawals. Exhibit C: for weeks now, he had been feeding you bullshit about working late, when you knew for a fact that he hadn’t been working any of the nights he said he had been. What the fuck else were you supposed to think?
“Alright,” Mike said after listening to you ramble on and on about your proof that he had been up to something shady, “I see how that looks bad, and I didn’t think this all the way through... You obviously weren’t supposed to find out and...”
“Mike!” you yelled, grabbing a pillow off the couch and lobbing it at his stupid head. “Why the fuck does it matter that I wasn’t supposed to find out? What the fuck are you doing, Mike, if you’re not two-timing me with some skank from god knows where? Which, by the way, I’m still not convinced you aren’t!”
“Babe,” he said, while trying to wrap you up in a hug. No way you were going to let him, so you took a swing at his arms each time they came closer. Eventually, he caught your hands. “Babe, listen. Babe! Ehh… Es ist nicht was du denkst.”
You looked at him in disbelief for a few moments. “Come again?”
“It’s not what you think,” he said hastily, eyes on the floor. Yeah, that’s what you thought he’d said. But… Had he been speaking German? That was impossible. Mike didn’t speak German. “I’ve been taking German classes a few nights a week. I… For when we visit your family this summer. I wanted to surprise you.”
“Can you say that in German?” you blurted out as you wrapped your arms around his neck, never happier about having been wrong than you were right now.
“Hm? Dass ich dich überraschen wollte?” He seemed hesitant, clearly not comfortable speaking your native language, but it was the sweetest thing ever. And he wasn’t half bad, either. He had the cutest American accent. (= 'that I wanted to surprise you?')
“Well, it worked,” you laughed before kissing him. “Sorry I ever doubted you.”
“Nah,” he shrugged, “I can see that it looked real fishy…”
“All of this because we will be visiting my family? My parents are going to love this!” you said. “You won’t be able to understand my grandmother, either way.”
“Not just because we’re visiting your family,” he admitted. As he said it, he sounded so guilty that you almost instantly panicked again. The only thing that kept you from spiraling was the tight hug he gave you. “Ich wollte dich eigentlich auch noch fragen, ob du mich heiraten willst.”  (= I actually also wanted to ask you if you want to marry me.')

1, 5, and 10 for any MCs you want
Hey! Thank you for the questions!
This is going to be a long post so I'm putting my answers under a cut.
1). How did you choose their name?
Brooklyn Moore (RCD MC) - I have actually liked the name Brooklyn for a while (idk why) so I picked it for her as I felt it fit. Her last name was picked through a random name generator.
Claire Evans (OH MC) - Claire was actually the first name I thought of when I first thought about changing my name, but so far that hasn't happened and I don't like the name that much for myself anymore so I gave it to her. Evans was just the first last name I thought of.
Adelaide Barnes (OH OC) - Adelaide was another name I thought about changing my name to. But I also thought it was interesting because I have it to where she was born in Australia and there is an Adelaide, Australia. Also Barnes was interesting because at the time I was really into Marvel/Sebastian Stan and I thought it was interesting because DEJ and SS did a movie together so i had chose the last name Barnes because of that.
Catherine "Charlie" Howard (AME MC) - So I had my FC (Leesa Tulley) for Charlie before I had her name. I was also really into Graceland at the time of creating her character (still mostly am) and one of the characters is named Catherine but she goes by Charlie. And then I thought Howard was funny for a last name as then her name is Catherine Howard and Leesa played Katherine Howard in Six.
Briar Boleyn (TRR/TRH/THF MC) - So the name Briar came to mind because one of my favorite disney princesses growing up was Aurora/Sleeping Beauty. And her name when she's hiding away from everyone is Briar Rose so I named her after the disney princess version of Aurora. Then Boleyn was just because I am into tudor history (not 100% into it but a decent amount) and I find Anne Boleyn to be one of the queens I find most interesting.
Odette Foredale (DAD MC) - I just liked the name.
Lillia Thompson (HSS MC) - I honestly have no idea how/why I picked this name for her.
Olive Karagach (HSS: CA MC) - Again, don't know why I chose her name to be Olive. Karagach was because my favorite pro on DWTS is Daniella Karagach and I just like the way it sounds (I was also going to make Olive a dancer at first but then changed my mind).
Emilia Anderson (OH MC) - Again another MC where I had the FC before the name and I just thought it fit.
Daniella Warren (Platinum MC) - Again, I like the name Daniella b/c of Daniella Karagach. Warren is because of Graceland and a character named Mike Warren.
Ericka Montgomery (TPS MC) - TPS gives me The Princess and The Pauper vibes and the barbie version was one of my favorite barbie movies and the pauper's name is Erika but I changed the spelling as I liked Ericka better. The last name was through a name generator.
Lauren Caldwell (QB MC) - Names of former queens in six (Lauren Drew, there have been other queens named Lauren/Loren/Lorren but this she was the one I thought of. And Jennifer Caldwell, which again there is Erin Caldwell who has been in six but I thought of Jen first)
Izi Arnold-Wilson (ROD MC) - I have liked the name Izzy for a while but Izi Maxwell (ironically another six queen/alternate) made me like this spelling better. I don't know why I chose the last names.
Aspyn Brooks (ROE MC) - First name I thought of when deciding to make a ROE MC)
Now that I did this I just realized how many names/faceclaims I have that are of six queens, whether it be Principals, Alternates, or Super Swings (and this isn't even all of them). And they're all from UK queens which is interesting as it is more likely that I would see the US queens before the UK queens (as I live in the US). Just something I find interesting but random.
5). Did they have a pet as a child?
Brooklyn Moore (RCD MC) - Yes. She had one dog.
Claire Evans (OH MC) - Yes. She had 2 cats and a dog.
Adelaide Barnes (OH OC) - Yes. They had two dogs, some chickens, and some fish.
Charlie Howard (AME MC) - Yes. She had one dog (her and her sisters wanted a cat but her dad and brothers are allergic)
Briar Boleyn (TRR/TRH/TRF MC) - Yes. She had 2 dogs.
Odette Foredale (DAD MC) - No
Lillia Thompson (HSS MC) - Yes. She had two cats.
Olive Karagach (HSS: CA MC) - No
Emilia Anderson (OH MC) - Yes. She had two birds and a dog.
Daniella Warren (Platinum MC) - Yes. She had three dogs.
Ericka Montgomery (TPS MC) - No
Lauren Caldwell (QB MC) - Yes. She had the farm animals plus a dog.
Izi Arnold-Wilson (ROD MC) - No
Aspyn Brooks (ROE MC) - No (Her brother is allergic to both cats and dos and her sisters are allergic to cats)
10). Free Space #1: Which of your OC's would be most likely to survive a zombie apocalypse? Which would die immediately?
I think most likely to survive would be Claire, Briar, Emilia, and Izi. I think the first to die would be Odette, then Olive, then Daniella.

ONE . The first rule of my blogs will literally always be don’t be a dick. I don’t have time for it. You don’t have time for it. Just don’t do it.
TWO . I don't have any triggers, but if you do please let me know!! this blog will contain a boat load of triggering content including but not limited to gore, violence, and mature situations. I generally don't tag triggers unless I'm asked, but I tag things with NSFW when it needs to be.
THREE . I do practice mains and exclusives, because sometimes you just click with people and that's ok! I will follow duplicates of MY muse, but unless it's a friend, I generally won't follow duplicates of exclusive muses.
FOUR . This blog is limited to interactions with mutuals. i always follow back / follow first if i feel like we can write together. if i haven't followed you back after a few days, it probably means i won't be following back to write. for the sake of my profession (i'm a high school age educator) i will not be following back anyone younger than 21.
FOUR CONT. While i do not follow back younger than 21 because i feel icky if you're young enough to be my student, my messages are always open if you ever need anything! if you need an adultier adult to talk to about something i can always try to be that for anyone. i know how important trusted adults are.
FIVE . This blog will be mostly private. I'm here for a good time not a long time. If you want to write with me, the best way is to DM me and say yo bitch let's RP.
SIX . My name is bee. i'm 32 years old. i've been writing on tumblr for like 10 years and rping in general for over half my life. i met my significant other through rp. we just moved across the country so i could go to rabbinical school. obviously i'm super busy but i love making friends!
CREDITS . psd is a combo of two by supersources. all graphics made by me unless otherwise stated.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Stranger Things Crossover Comic Incoming
Tumblr media
IDW Publishing and Dark Horse Comics have partnered on a four-issue comic miniseries where the kids from Hawkins will meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things hails from writer Cameron Chittock and artist Fero Pe.
“Eleven, Max, Dustin, Mike, Will, and Lucas are looking forward to a nonthreatening, fun-filled trip to New York City. With the gang hundreds of miles from the otherworldly weirdness of their hometown, they’re sure to catch a break this time…or at least that’s what they think until they encounter a threat both bizarre and familiar. To face that threat, they must unite with a fearsome fighting team every bit as bizarre…but green!” (IDW Publishing)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things #1 (of 4) goes on sale in July 2023. The first issue features Cover A by Fero Pe, Cover B by Jorge Corona, Cover C by Jenn Woodall, Cover D by Adam Gorham, and retailer incentive variants by Rafael Albuquerque and Daniel Warren Johnson.
