Page 14. ---- Bandit’s Car, Stolen in Toronto, Found in Central London ---- As Police Fooled --- Authorities Cannot Explain Crime Wave of Last Month ---- From the London Bureau of The Windsor Star LONDON. Ont., May 18. - Trail of the lone gunman, who robbed the West London branch of the Bank of Toronto of $725 yesterday, is growing cold, police admitted, with the discovery last night of the bandit car parked at the rear of a building on Bathurst street, three blocks from the city's main intersection. 

STOLEN IN TORONTO ALTHOUGH detectives are tracking down every clue in the city's first bank holdup in seven years. they have a gap of eight hour between the crime and the finding of the abandoned car to cover up. During this time the bandit could easily have left the city by train or bus.

The car, which was stolen in Toronto, Monday night. was found within stones throw of the C. N R and Arrow Bus depot.. When la-st seen fry several people who work in a factory near the parking lot, the bandit was heading for the station. At that time they did not know of the holdup it had occurred scarcely five minutes before. 

While city and provincial police were working on the theory the gun-man had headed his speedy car along Highway No. 2, he apparently cut down a side street after dashing  across Wharncliffe Road bridge and drove directly to the lot. He may have passed the police station on his way there, because it is one of the two probable routes taken by the robber. 

Ernest J. Slatter. of 163 Grey street, employed by Pine Paper Company, which has office in a building adjacent to where the car was discovered, told police about the machine. Slatter did not know there had been holdup until after he went home from work in the evening. He remembered the car which had been driven into the yard bv a tall man. and at once notified police. SAME DESCRIPTION Believing the bandit might be hiding in the vicinity awaiting nightfall, a cordon of police was thrown around the district, and an intensive checkup was made without success. 

After the car was found, several emploves of the paper company and a soft drink works which is located in the same building, said they had seen the gunman when he drove in with the car. Their description tallied with that given by Malcolm Patterson, bank teller, who was the holdup victim. 

Throughout the afternoon following the robbery, city and provincial police patroled the surrounding district. They are reported to have barricaded several highways and stopped all cars coming out of the city. 

First reports of the holdup said the bandit car was seen speeding along the highway in the vicinity of Lambeth, but by the time that information was given police, it is believed the criminal had safely abandoned his car nd quietly disappeared. 

17 ARRESTED The bank robbery eclipsed all previous crimes of the major wave which struck this district less than a month ago. leaving in its wake numerous break-ins. two safe-cracking jobs, and almost a score of stolen cars. 

To date, 17 persons, most of them between the ages of 18 and 25, have been arrested for the offences, and five have been dealt with in local courts. Three were sent to penitentiary, and two to reformatory. 

Toronto police yesterday claimed they had solved the brutal beating of Garfield O'Brien. 59-y ear-old service station operator in the Woodstock district, who was bound by two gangsters and left in his service station. They said they had under arrest James Cooper, age 25. of Toronto, as one of the two men who allegedly slugged O’Brien. 

With the arrest of Cooper, the number of Torontonians m custody for district offences now numbers 10. 

London was amazingly free of crime until three weeks ago when a trio led by 18-year-old Aldo Mizzau. of Toronto, drove a stolen car from Toronto, stopped off at Centreville, near Ingersoll, and Melbourne, 30 miles west of here, long enough to crack two safes and escape with $700 in cash. 

AWAIT TRIAL. Mizzau was arrested in Windsor when he was unable to elude a police scout car, less than three hours after the Melbourne burglary. His two companions escaped, but police allege they are Albert Hall. 21. and George Dobbie, 23, both of Toronto, who were picked up at their homes a few days later. 

When Mizzau pleaded guilty to charges of breaking and entering and was sentenced to Portsmouth penitentiary for five years, the other two elected trial by judge and jury and were committed for trial last week by Magistrate C. W. Hawkshaw

Two Toronto burglary artists, who broke into apartments in the city and stole goods valued at $500. also went to penitentiary for two-year terms. They were Edward Carter. 27, and Charles Brown. 32. 

Reformatory sentences were handed out to Charles Oakley, 23, and Murdock Harris, 21. both of Toronto, who employed a novel way of stealing a car from Frank MacRae, local car salesman, two weeks ago. 

The pair had MacRae demonstrate a high-powered machine on a road south of the city. and while they were driving along Harris, who was in the rear seat, ordered MacRae to stop and get out of the car. They fled in the machine and left a trail of gasoline thefts from service stations until they were captured in Orillia 36 hours later. 

CHARGES DENIED For the burglarizing of a garage at Wardsville, two weeks ago. and the theft of a car. Three youths. two from Toronto, are being held. Fred Cudney, 21, of Toronto. has pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering, but Orval Hardie, 22, Toronto, and Richard Dickenson, 18, of Chatham, have denied any knowledge of the crimes. They will be tried on May 20. 

City police, after the arrest of one youth on May, following a break-in at a Wortley road service station, stepped out and captured five other youths who they claim are members of a sang responsible for most of the district burglaries. 

Harry Watson, 25-year-old leader of the gang, pleaded guilty to one charge of burglary, but like four other of his pals faces a total of three counts. The rest. James Coughtrev, 18, Vido Rizzo, 18, Carlo Gaetano, 17, Arthur Cameron, 21, and Bertram Fricker, 27, all of London, have denied charges against them and will go on trial today and tomorrow. 

Four of them are charged with burglarizing a general store at Kerrwood on May 9. Watson pleaded guilty to the count after police had recovered most of the stolen goods at his home. 

District police are at a loss to understand the unprecedented wave of crime. They say that London and district has been free of major crimes recently, but for some unknown reason Toronto criminals have decided to invade the territory.

Despite the numerous offenses police have been able to solve nearly everry crime. If the bank robber is arrested there will be no outstanding crime remaining unsolved In the district. 

Camera Records Scenes After Gunman Escapes Nearly $1,000 at London THE London West branch of the Bank of Toronto was held up in London yesterday by a lone armed bandit who escaped with nearly $1,000. Asking for a dollar's worth of nickels, the bandit pulled a .32 revolver when Teller Malcolm A. Patterson handed them over and fled in a blue sedan. In the upper left, Patterson is shown checking his cash to determine the exact loss. In the upper centre are Maurice Delves, left, service station attendant, who saw the bandit's car pull away from the bank but failed to get the number, and Clifford Bice, who saw the blue sedan earlier in the day. Bice described the gunman as being dressed like a railroadman, with a bandana handkerchief around his neck. The upper right picture shows school children peering through the bank window as it was closed temporarily for stock-taking. In the lower left is Clare Heald, a junior in the bank, who was working at a typewriter when the bandit entered and was forced to lie on the floor during the holdup. Heald chased the gunman in a commandeered cleaner's truck but lost sight of the fast sedan. The lower right picture is a view of the bank, situated on the west side of Wharncliffe road north, a block north of Dundas street.

Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO, OBE (also known as Paddy Fermor) was born on February 11, 1915. He was a British author, scholar, soldier and polyglot who played a prominent role behind the lines in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War. He was widely regarded as Britain's greatest living travel writer during his lifetime, based on books such as A Time of Gifts (1977). A BBC journalist once described him as "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene".

In 1950 Leigh Fermor published his first book, The Traveller's Tree, about his post-war travels in the Caribbean. The book won the Heinemann Foundation Prize for Literature and established his career. The reviewer in The Times Literary Supplement wrote: "Mr Leigh Fermor never loses sight of the fact, not always grasped by superficial visitors, that most of the problems of the West Indies are the direct legacy of the slave trade." It was quoted extensively in Live and Let Die, by Ian Fleming. He went on to write several further books of his journeys, including Mani and Roumeli, of his travels on mule and foot around remote parts of Greece.

Leigh Fermor translated the manuscript The Cretan Runner written by George Psychoundakis, a dispatch runner on Crete during the war, and helped Psychoundakis get his work published. Leigh Fermor also wrote a novel, The Violins of Saint-Jacques, which was adapted as an opera by Malcolm Williamson. His friend Lawrence Durrell recounts in his book Bitter Lemons (1957) how, during the Cypriot insurgency against continued British rule in 1955, Leigh Fermor visited Durrell's villa in Bellapais, Cyprus:

After a splendid dinner by the fire he starts singing, songs of Crete, Athens, Macedonia. When I go out to refill the ouzo bottle...I find the street completely filled with people listening in utter silence and darkness. Everyone seems struck dumb. 'What is it?' I say, catching sight of Frangos. 'Never have I heard of Englishmen singing Greek songs like this!' Their reverent amazement is touching; it is as if they want to embrace Paddy wherever he goes.

After living with her for many years, Leigh Fermor was married in 1968 to the Honourable Joan Elizabeth Rayner (née Eyres Monsell), daughter of Bolton Eyres-Monsell, 1st Viscount Monsell. She accompanied him on many of his travels until her death in Kardamyli in June 2003, aged 91. They had no children. They lived part of the year in their house in an olive grove near Kardamyli in the Mani Peninsula, southern Peloponnese, and part of the year in Gloucestershire.

In 2007, he said that, for the first time, he had decided to work using a typewriter, having written all his books longhand until then.

He opened his home in Kardamyli to the local villagers on his name day. New Zealand writer Maggie Rainey-Smith (who was staying in the area while researching for her next book) joined in with his name day celebration in November 2007, and, after his death, posted some of the photographs taken that day. The house at Kardamyli was featured in the 2013 film Before Midnight.

Leigh Fermor influenced a generation of British travel writers, including Bruce Chatwin, Colin Thubron, Philip Marsden, Nicholas Crane and Rory Stewart.

Leigh Fermor was noted for his strong physical constitution, even though he smoked 80 to 100 cigarettes a day. Although in his last years he suffered from tunnel vision and wore hearing aids, he remained physically fit up to his death and dined at table on the last evening of his life.

For the last few months of his life Leigh Fermor suffered from a cancerous tumour, and in early June 2011 he underwent a tracheotomy in Greece. As death was close, according to local Greek friends, he expressed a wish to visit England to say good-bye to his friends, and then return to die in Kardamyli, though it is also stated that he actually wished to die in England and be buried next to his wife.

Leigh Fermor died in England, aged 96, on 10 June 2011, the day after his return. His funeral took place at St Peter's Church, Dumbleton, Gloucestershire, on 16 June 2011. A Guard of Honour was provided by serving and former members of the Intelligence Corps, and a bugler from the Irish Guards sounded the Last Post and reveille. Leigh Fermor is buried next to his wife in the churchyard at Dumbleton.

The Greek inscription is a quotation from Konstantinos Kavafis that can be translated as "In addition, he was that best of all things, Hellenic".

Jacob Jacobsz de Wet II  - Malcolm III 'Canmore', King of Scotland (1057-93) - 1684-6

Malcolm III (Scottish Gaelic: Máel Coluim mac Donnchada; c. 26 March 1031 – 13 November 1093 (age 62)) was King of Scots from 1058 to 1093. He was later nicknamed "Canmore" ("ceann mòr", Gaelic for "Great Chief": "ceann" denotes "leader", "head" (of state) and "mòr" denotes "pre-eminent", "great", and "big"). Malcolm's long reign of 35 years preceded the beginning of the Scoto-Norman age. Henry I of England and Eustace III of Boulogne were his sons-in-law, making him the maternal grandfather of Empress Matilda, William Adelin and Matilda of Boulogne. All three of them were prominent in English politics during the 12th century.

Malcolm's kingdom did not extend over the full territory of modern Scotland: the north and west of Scotland remained under Scandinavian rule following the Norse invasions. Malcolm III fought a series of wars against the Kingdom of England, which may have had as its objective the conquest of the English earldom of Northumbria. These wars did not result in any significant advances southward. Malcolm's primary achievement was to continue a lineage that ruled Scotland for many years, although his role as founder of a dynasty has more to do with the propaganda of his youngest son David I and his descendants than with history.

Malcolm's second wife, St. Margaret of Scotland, is Scotland's only royal saint. Malcolm himself had no reputation for piety; with the notable exception of Dunfermline Abbey in Fife, he is not definitely associated with major religious establishments or ecclesiastical reforms.

Jacob Jacobsz de Wet II (1641, Haarlem – 1697, Amsterdam), also known as James de Witt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for a series of 110 portraits of Scottish monarchs, many of them mythical, produced for the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh during the reign of Charles II.

Edinburgh Castle 1943.

Edinburgh Castle became a royal residence when James I was murdered in Perth and his widow Joan Beaufort moved the Royal Court and her son, James II, to Edinburgh. The oldest part of the building is St Margaret's Chapel dating from c.1100 and named after King Malcolm III's wife. The chapel only survived Robert the Bruce's attack in 1313 because he ordered his men to leave it untouched.
