Every couple months I get obsessed with Fortress Maximus for a bit. this one of those months.

I feel perfectly normal when I suddenly remember that Melkor is probably the only character for whom we know for sure Mairon felt real, genuine, and positive emotions.

Don't get me wrong — I’m not saying he never felt anything like that for anyone else at all. Even for such a hopeless angbang trash like me, that’d be too extreme. But when it comes to other characters he interacted with, we have to think, guess, and headcanon.

Whom among the other Ainur did he respect or feel friendly toward? Was it Aulë — did he have fondness for him, was he neutral, or was there some underlying displeasure with his master from the start? What about Yavanna — did he admire her? Did he respect Manwë and Varda? And what about the other Maiar — Curumo, Eönwë, etc?

It’s a blank space you can fill with whatever scenarios you like.

However, Tolkien could have easily mentioned one of these names to illustrate that Mairon wasn’t always evil, that there was a time when in him existed "a shadow of good: the ability once at least to admire or admit the superiority of a being other than himself" (c) "Morgoth's Ring".

But none of those "good and worthy" characters were chosen, and the only one explicitly mentioned was Melkor. His master is that character we don’t have to speculate about. That’s already set in stone.

It amazes me because Tolkien didn't have to write that Mairon "admired and adored" Melkor, and without that detail, it would be easy to assume that he only served Melkor for power, that he was purely pragmatic about it, or even that he never liked him at all, which would have been the expected route. Because it’s Melkor, the horrible, cruel Melkor. Who in their right mind could even like him? Everyone, even his own allies, was supposed to fear and despise him. But no. The canon says otherwise, and that fact brings me so much happiness.

Of course, I’m writing all of this as angbang shipper, I’m very biased, and not even trying to hide it.

I'm sorry if this question comes across as ignorant or rude I just wanted to know. How does one respectfully ship an aromantic character?

A character in the fandom I'm in is often headcanoned to be aroace and quite a few people have been a lil aggressive against the shippers in the fandom. I'm ace and aroflux but I don't mind the shipping especially since the aroace part of the character isn't 100% canon. But I've really only recently properly labelled myself and started interacting with other aros. In doing so I saw a lot of posts in regards to Aro characters being shipped.

Which is what led me to ask, if one were to ship an Aro character, how should you go about it? Genuinely sorry if this comes off rude. And thank you for making this blog, it's been great with coming to terms with my identity!!!

This honestly depends on the fandom, the character and more! If the character is canonically aroace then keep it that way!

The most respectful way is to just not ship them to be honest. It’s like when an entire fandom decides a character is gay or trans and then suddenly you come out with a cis straight fic. It’s kind of a low blow.

BUT also recognises that this is fandom, and you can do what you want. Don’t ship cannon gay men with canon lesbian women but feel free to ship undefined characters or characters within their canonical sexuality.

To be on the safe side I would make a not at the start of your fic about either you yourself being aroacespec or about acknowledging the character as such.

Don’t be a dick and write “finding C changed them” or write something about them being “cured” of being aroacespec. That’s gross

I have a lot of things I like! I think most of the things I like have to do with music, Japanese literature, and dancing. I love libraries and their smell, as cliche as it sounds, I think the smell of books is really comforting. I also think this with rainy weather, and the after smell when you walk out.

I like a lot of more feminine clothing choices, and sometimes it does cost me a couple stares of judgement when I walk down streets, or admiration. Do you think that the gaang atla movie might make casual fans realize bryke are not the best writers? Like Everywhere they get praised but honestly if the writing in the movie is at the levels of the comics I could maybe see ppl turn on them a bit ( it also sucks bc I doubt katara and zuko will even interact in the movie)

Hi anon! I think people will almost certainly be disappointed in the new Avatar Studios movie, because nothing has even come close to the quality of ATLA after the original show ended. However, from what I’ve observed in the fandom, there’s always someone other than Bryke to blame. For example, when people rag on Korra, they blame Nickelodeon. When they rag on the comics, they blame Gene Yang (and incidentally I’ve actually seen a K/ataang shipper say that the reason the comics are so bad is because Gene Yang is a Zutara shipper — as if a grown ass professional would compromise his contract / reputation for a ship war). And when they rag on the first live action movie, they rag on M. Night. I’m not saying that Bryke are completely at fault for the shortcomings for these projects — collaborative creative pursuits are wonderful, magical things and it’s hard to know where credit and blame go when the whole point is that collaboration is beyond the sum of its parts — but the bottom line is that when certain fans are hellbent on not blaming Bryke, there are always other scapegoats.

I’m friends with many casual fans, and they were the ones who got me into the show. Honestly, I don’t think they even gave a second thought to Bryke until they left the Netflix production, which is convenient because now people can credit Bryke for the ingenuity of ATLA and blame Netflix for driving them away. I’m not sure casual fans will turn on Bryke for making a mediocre movie…BUT: if Zuko undergoes a character regression similar to his comics arc, people will probably get mad. Zuko’s redemption arc is widely considered one of the best on TV. You cannot find a Reddit thread about “best redemption arcs of all time” without Zuko being one of the top answers. From Bryke’s interviews, it kind of feels like they don’t really understand his appeal, and if they butcher his character in the absence of writers who got him more…well, I think people will be real mad about that. I mean, people got so mad about NATLA Katara, and she’s nowhere near as beloved as Zuko b/c misogyny and racism and many people found her annoying but that’s a whole other thing

And on a related note, I agree that Katara and Zuko will probably barely interact in the new movie, and it will seem kind of stilted and awkward. I remember an interview with Aaron Ehasz where he said that he’s not really a shipper and he doesn’t write stories with shipping in mind: what matters more is letting the narrative drive itself. That POV, undoubtedly shared by others in the writers’ room (including MVP Elizabeth Welch), is what was responsible for the development of the Katara - Zuko friendship in the original show in the first place. It’s very, very stifling to prioritize a ship war over the actual story. Antis claim Zutara shippers create convoluted fanfic plots where other characters and relationships are downplayed in favour of their ship, but that’s exactly what happens in the canon comics wrt K/ataang. I don’t know if it’ll seem so transparent to the casual viewer, but even if the motivations aren’t obvious, the decline in quality sure will be. For the sake of my love for all Gaang-related shenanigans I hope Bryke won’t go down that road for the new movie, but…well, they’ve done pettier things.

In all seriousness I think the lack of Karl shippers is just because people either

A) Don’t watch Pearl’s streams so they don’t actually see her and Karn interact,

B) Don’t know Karn exists or

C) Most people ship the ‘characters’ not real people so when they do shipping stuff they tend towards things with “in character” interactions like GemPearl or PearlTek.

Or the alternate option which I think I’ve only seen like twice which is that they think Gem and Pearl are actually secretly dating and Pearl is lying about being straight. Which. Not even gonna touch that. I did my time in the Twenty One Pilots Gulag I’m not going back.

I don’t really tend to get into shipping much in any fandom as much as I get attached to characters. So for me, I just reblog any art or fics of Pearl I like that are shipping with others on my main blog (not picky about ships because again I don’t care) and put content about Pearl and her actual partner on here.

How many works do you have on AO3?

11. I was actually surprised when I checked. It feels like I’ve written 6 at most.

I started writing fanfic in 2013, then took a really long break from posting. I still wrote (mostly unfinished novel-length stories) and read a lot, but no fandom pulled me in enough to publish my own stories. Until JJK in early 2024.

It’s the tragedy, I think. It’s not that I want to fix canon, I love it for the pain it’s caused me, but I am strongly motivated to write happier outcomes for my ship.

The Darkest Deluge - Kingdom Hearts series, Strifehart & Soriku, 123k words (unfinished, on hiatus)

This is a plot-heavy soft sci-fi story with a big cast and four major POVs. At first, I managed regular weekly updates, but then life happened and I took longer and longer breaks. I still intend to finish it. In fact, everything except for the final battle and dénouement is already drafted. The second my JJK obsession fades a little, I’ll sit down and finally get it done.

Born to Die - JJK, stsg, 40k words

My first JJK fic, a plotty, vaguely futuristic vampire AU. I got to play with very interesting themes in this one. I’ve promised a sequel and I will deliver, though I’m not sure when.

The first part in a magic realism/witch AU. I expected the series to get barely any traction, since it starts with the unresolved romantic tension tag. Each installment is a self-contained case fic, which is my favourite genre, centred around a theme. For this one, it’s grief.

Part 5 in the same series, themed around forgiveness. This is where the romantic tension finally gets resolved.

A silly, fluffy getting together fic. Technically canon compliant, but I’m always hesitant to use that tag when writing about a non-canon ship.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Every single one, and usually in a timely manner. I also try to match the commenter’s energy, so I’ll leave a long reply to a long comment, and respond to an emoji with an emoji. I want to make sure that each commenter feels appreciated and knows how grateful I am, but also, the reason I write and post fanfic is that I want to be an active participant in my fandom, to be a part of the community. The best way to achieve that, I think, is to interact with people.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

There he is, happy - it’s a canon compliant stsg fic with the MCD archive warning 🤷‍♀️ Alternatively, it’s The Deep Well, but I’m not saying why.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

I’m not sure. I guess Unknown-C is the most lighthearted. Aside from the two stories mentioned above, I haven’t written any properly bad endings, but I mean… I’ve been focusing on themes like death and grief. I can’t claim those are happy fics.

Do you write crossovers?

No. I just don’t find the idea compelling. I might do a fusion someday, though. Specifically, JJK characters in the world of Stardew Valley.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not once. I have a small audience, so the likelihood of getting hate is really low for me.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Since September this year, yes. What kinds of smut are there? I guess I’m not super interested in writing penetrative sex? I’m a switch/vers shipper focused on mlm ships (unfortunately; I hope to get hooked on a wlw ship some day).

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I sincerely doubt it.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope!

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Also nope. I’d love to try it, but as a discovery writer that plans primarily in themes, I imagine I would be horrible to work with.

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Listen. I don’t have an all-time favourite anything (except maybe Assam tea, but I haven’t tried every variety out there, so this could very easily change). I go through phases, come back to old ships after years and years, and just generally follow my whim.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I have a bunch of WIPs for the early Assassin’s Creed games that I will definitely never finish. They are a decade old.

What are your writing strengths?

Plot? Despite planning in themes, I think my stories are usually plot-driven. I’ve been told my characterisation tends to be true to canon, though that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s strong… Oh! I think I’m good at echoing the original material in different ways, usually through AUs, to explore canon themes from new angles.

Also, worldbuilding. I mostly write AUs, so it’s kind of a given, but I think of myself as a worldbuilder first, writer second.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Action scenes are definitely one. I find the choreography of a fight horribly boring (to read and to write), so I tend to fast-forward through them.

Character voice. I’ve seen people do absolutely incredible things with POV characters. I want to be that good. I will probably never be that good.

Originality of structure, if that makes sense. I think fanfic is an incredible medium for trying out new formats, pretty much without any constraints. But even though I really want to do fun things with story format and structure, I end up falling into safe habits.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

It can be great if it serves a purpose. Sometimes, hiding information from the reader/achieving vibes over understanding is the goal. It can also be useful for settling the reader more firmly in the POV. But it’s the sort of tool that should be used very sparingly, or else it will become frustrating.

What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

The Old Guard’s Joe/Nicky. Maybe when the sequel finally comes out? Also Arcane’s Silco/Vander. Unfortunately I can only do one fandom at a time, and I haven’t yet been released from my current obsession.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Oh wow. Hm. I’m gonna say Born to Die, because it was the beginning of my writing journey in a new fandom and it got me out of a fanfic writing slump that had lasted years. Also, it was my first, raw attempt at working through my JJK-related feelings, so it’ll always be special to me in that way.

It’s come to my attention that a lot of people in the BES fandom are new to fandom-culture in general (or lack there of; we denizens of tumblr are residents of a cesspool) and don’t know a lot of general old school online manners, laid down in Days of Yore by earlier generations. So let me bring up a crucial one that is generally being ignored on tumblr in the BES-sphere: ship tagging!

I am not doing this to condescend, I genuinely want to be helpful and to help us all enjoy our enclosure and our enrichment in said enclosure together. I think a lot of grief going around the blue eye samurai world on social media could be solved if everyone remembered one good old cardinal rule of fandom bullshit:

you do not put ship wank in a ship’s general tag.

let me say that one more time in different terms:

If you want to rant about how much you hate a ship, general practice has always been, on tumblr anyway, not to do so in the safe space created for said ship.

once again, lemme be very clear; I don’t give one rat’s ass or 800 collective asses of rats what you ship, why you ship it, whether you ship anything at all, why you hate x y z, etc. That’s great, that’s what fandom is for! Enjoy yourself! The issue is that there’s all this infighting fuckery going on that is exhausting to even watch from the sidelines, and I think there’s a lot of confusion as to why anyone is fighting over any of this shit at all as it is 2024 and ship wars are 2011 superwholock garbage that we all collectively agreed to jettison into space by 2015, ya feel me?

(and if you like to start shit and throw hands then obv this post isn’t for you as you know what you’re doing, this is for the folks who don’t know and are confused as to why they can’t rant without blowback)

So if you’ve gotten on tumblr recently and noticed your anti-ship post blowing up for some reason or other and asked yourself “Jesus why are these assholes from that ship always coming for me?? They’re such dicks!!” ask yourself:

did I tag them in my post?

Because when you tag a ship in a post about how much you hate it, it’s not a beacon that says “Hear Ye Hear Ye, Interacteth Not Ye Fuckos From Ship I Hate, This Is About How Much I Hate Your Ship”. For that to be the case, you would need old-school anti-ship tag nomenclature, like this: #anti-[shipname] or #[shipname] wank. Those tags would communicate your intent to rant, which is your sacred fandom right to enjoy doing! It is not, however, your sacred fandom right to enjoy doing it in the wrong space, that’s what’s happening here. A post that tags a ship with its normal tag, but whose content is anti/wank content about said ship, sends the signal: “ayyooo, who would like to debate this with me?”

So, does all that make sense? If you tag your post analyzing all the reasons why you think a ship sucks with #ship, you are encouraging everyone who ships that ship to interact with your post. It’s like rocking up to somebody’s house, ringing the doorbell, and saying “I hate your fugly ass piece of shit house, asshole” and then getting irritated when the homeowner responds with “who the fuck are you, get off my lawn?!”

#anti-[shipname], #[shipname] hate (forgot about that one, also useful), and #[shipname] wank do two very useful things:

1) They let other people who want to gleefully rant with you know that you’re on the level and they give like minded individuals a chance to follow those tags so you can have more rant sessions together, and

2) they minimize likelihood of involvement by the shippers you’re ranting about, who can block the tag, while keeping the ship’s normal tag open for the people who enjoy it

tldr; *swordfather voice* it would be bitchin if people could stop bitchin in the wrong places so that we can all coexist like adults here, touch some grass, and chill. Tag ship hate #anti-[shipname], #[shipname] wank, or #[shipname]-hate and keep it out of the general pro-ship tags :)

Really not looking to start ship wars in your asks so please don’t take this a certain way or anything, you are one of the only helaemond friendly team green blogs I know! I like all the Greencest ships but am particular to helaemond and it’s been so weird to see how TG fandom has turned on these shippers. I get having problems with how Aemond has been written this season, but even before season 2 came out people were making fun of them, there’s a whole dumb Helaemond vs Helaegon ship argument that in all honesty seems fairly one sided, and now it’s a popular discourse about how hoping they (helaemond) have some scenes together in what remains of the 3 episodes we have left 😭 is treating her character poorly. Nevermind there is also no chance for us to explore her and Aegon meaningful either (I actually loved their first scene this season but anyway it is clear that is not happening) and we all want to see more of her? I don’t know it’s all very frustrating, I get people have preferences for one ship over another, it just comes across so mean spirited when we all obviously like the same characters. I also don’t remember it being this way for a very long time, I was lurking in season 1 and over hiatus. This is all so recent 🥲

It's been a while, hasn't it? :)) I haven't been on twitter in ages, but is it really that different now than it's been during the hiatus? Because I remember people being very anti-helaemond all the time, I don't even think there was a time where this ship wasn't being called into question over every little thing. Not to mention generally nasty behaviour towards shippers.

It's no secret I've been unimpressed with Aemond's development this season. I am still looking forward to the Phia-Ewan scenes, especially since they revealed they were playing them with a helaemond twist in mind, even though it will remain subtext. But the compounding problem is that they haven't done anything with Helaena this season either. Her big event was minimized as much as possible and her descent into madness wasn't even removed because they wanted her to be less incapacitated. They're not giving her anything to do now post-B&C either! She is simply sitting in rooms or walking down corridors, not having much of an opinion on anything and completely uninvolved in the lives of her family or in the conflict. She is being written without much agency at all: she is the queen, yet she doesn't even seek out anyone or initiate a conversation by herself - everything simply happens to her.

The helaemond vs helaegon argument remains dumb, because they're both equally underdeveloped on screen (the first is subtext, the second is..... criminally absent). Basically the pot calling the kettle black. In both ships and, unfortunately, in all her relationships seemingly, Helaena is just a projection for the other person to react to. She makes Alicent feel sad, Aegon feel awkward and Aemond covetous. Will we ever get a scene that's about Helaena? Forget the Bechdel test, we'll have to resort to the Helaena Targaryen test

So, in that regard, IDEK what kind of interaction she could possibly have with Aemond at this point. Will her story yet again be subordinated to her interlocutor? I hope I'm wrong, but at this point, I expect the scenes between them will actually end up being about Aemond and his characterisation. Will he be the one who figures out her gift of prophecy while she simply exists alongside him in a room? Remember that she never even received one scene next to Dreamfyre - but Aemond did!

It's just so unbalanced and it goes beyond any shipping wars - Helaena doesn't have an arc. She never received one in the first place. In the last episode, she acted the same way she did in S01E08. There's no emotional progression to her character: so far, she's been threatened by Meleys, become queen, had one child brutally murdered in front of her, witnessed her mother's affair and now her brother lies on his deathbed, with an incapacitated dragon, effectively leaving them with only Vhagar operational in a full-blown war. She was a little sad and now she's over it and back to her baseline melancholia. Come on.

It's not the concept of helaemond that's treating her character poorly. It's the fact that they have no idea what to do with her apart from having her glide throughout the castle like a ghost.

You don’t seem to violate any of my personal boundaries afterall. Don’t let me dictate who you can or cannot ship especially if it makes you happy and you seem self aware.

If you were a bkdk fan in particular I don’t think I’d have an issue with it, just as long as you A. acknowledge the ship itself is inherently toxic, B. not a proshipper, C. you’re okay with ppl disliking it (does not count if they’re attacking you directly and you’re innocent), and D. you condemn the toxic shippers.

That’s rare to come across, and to anyone else who’s reading this…particularly bkdk stans, if you do not tick all the requirements then that means the shoe fits and I want nothing to do with yall.

Fyi I’m not really a shipper in general, just someone who prefers written analysis of plots, arcs and sometimes pre-established couples that actually work. Once in a while there are one or two ships I’d obsess over, but even then I’m a tunnel vision type of fan so you won’t see me glazing every fancontent of them, I’m just here picking and choosing before going back to my small curated cave.

I hope I don’t come across as snobby or this stuck up “I’m better than you lust driven obsessed shipers” type of fan. I’m sorry if I do, sometimes my wording can come across as blunt or odd….But on the other hand I don’t find myself gravitating to shippers because the census create unnecessary discourses from their rose tinted glasses and they’re just not someone I’d turn to have a proper discussion with. They’re often delusional and feed of breadcrumbs, and its even worse when they’re a fujoshi shipper who ship (pale skinned) men but I’m getting too ahead of myself.

Hi,

I have kind of an unusual ask to put out there for my fellow P/C shippers

I have shipped PC for 30 years, (I’m 39) but I have never written fic for them. I just now am getting up enough courage to try, but I have a bit of a hurdle. I want to do the best job possible, but I have a physical disability that makes physically typing, and even more hand writing, a slow process. It probably takes me twice as long for me to type a page of writing ( or something like this post I’m currently typing myself ) due to motor coordination speed issues, as if would for one of you .

And I want to put so much emotional detail, family interaction and hurt comfort into this fic that my ideas are getting way ahead of my typing speed. I only have one page typed but have so much crafted in my head that it’s frustrating not to be able to get it out quickly. I have typed fic for myself before but it is usually short, for the longer stuff, I usually dictated to friends. But I don’t have a lot of friends who have typed for me before, that also like P/C, and the ones that both have and do, are busy right now.

Is there anyone out there in P/C land who would be willing to type this story for me, either live over zoom or FaceTime or by transcribing voice notes that I send them?

For those wondering: Doing dictation to Siri etc, would be an option, except that it doesn’t work out that great as I have a bit of a speech impediment so a human typist would be best

You could also feel free to discuss content and characterization with me if you wish as I do not have a P/C beta yet. You would be credited in my author’s note as typist ( and beta if you took on that role)

(I cannot afford to pay anyone for their time but would be willing to self type a short fic with a premise of their choosing in return for this help or write a longer one with that same premise if they wanted to transcribe it again.)

The premise of the fic at its core, is a childbirth scenario so if you that is not your cup of tea I do not want to make you sit through it. It will have a happy ending, but may be somewhat angsty in places. (The angst will NOT involve the baby’s survival or Beverly’s or Jean Luc’s etc) It will be a one shot , but may be 10-20 + pages of words. It will contain spoilers for both all of TNG and Season 3 of Picard.

Please let me know if you would be interested in doing this by sending me an ask . I will respond to it privately unless it’s requesting more information that might be helpful to anyone who might consider doing this
