“𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓, 𝒊'𝒎 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒓…” part 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝗺͜𝗶͜-͜𝗵͜𝗶͜&͜𝘂͜𝗹͜𝗿͜𝗶͜𝗰͜𝗵͜
Mi-Hi has always dreamt of being on Earth - and alright, she kinda wanted to not be for an infinite time, and yet, she's very happy to be here. It's probably the reason she's that grateful for Ulrich. Yes, it happened by accident - and yes, he's been trying to send her back to Hell ever since, but still, she knows he's the one she should thank, for offering her the life she has now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝘀͜𝗲͜𝗼͜-͜𝗷͜𝗼͜𝗼͜𝗻͜&͜𝗵͜𝘄͜𝗮͜𝗻͜
Seo-Joon has always been the caretaker - and yet, deeply incapable of taking care of himself. Maybe that's why he likes to have Hwan around him so much. They do share a deep connection, that sometimes scares him, and yet, he knows the older boy would go to the end of the world for him, if he asked him. And honestly? Seo-Joon would do the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝗵͜𝘄͜𝗮͜𝗻͜&͜𝗷͜𝗶͜-͜𝗵͜𝗮͜𝗲͜
Hwan doesn't do well with authority - except if that authority comes from Ji-Hae. Of course, they argued a lot, especially during the beginning of the Glade, where there was just as many boys as they were fingers on one hand, and they didn't always see eye to eye. Yet, Hwan holds an immense respect for Ji-Hae, not as a leader, but as a best friend, and is grateful to the way he always kept him on check, if he ever needed it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝗺͜𝗶͜𝘀͜𝗵͜𝗮͜&͜𝘁͜𝗮͜𝗲͜-͜𝗵͜𝗲͜𝗲͜
Misha is like a sheep thrown into the wolves' den - except inside this sheep's clothing hides a meaner, bigger wolf. And while a lot of people considers her a bitch, Tae-Hee is one of the only boys who's able to see right through her, and care for her like he would for any of his friends. And Misha would burn the world for him - sometimes quite literally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝗷͜𝗮͜𝗲͜&͜𝘀͜𝗮͜𝗿͜𝗮͜
Jae never had the chance to know what it's like to have a sister - his stepfather made sure of that. But apparently, the universe was hellbent on giving him one anyway, and it came in form of his mean best friend, with the same scowl as him, and scars that go beyond any injuries. And yet, Jae loves Sara. Immensely. It's for her he'll lose sanity, everyday if needed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝘁͜𝗵͜𝗼͜𝗺͜𝗮͜𝘀͜&͜𝗹͜𝘂͜𝗰͜𝗮͜𝘀͜
Thomas has always been affectionately called the "mother hen" of the group - and that's only because of his little brother, Lucas. He always loved him, more than anything else in the world, and it got ten times worse after his accident. Thomas now knows what it's like to live without him - and God how he is grateful to have him back, and to ensure it's never going to happen again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝗺͜𝗶͜𝗻͜𝗵͜𝗼͜&͜𝗸͜𝗮͜𝗶͜
Minho has been so used to his loneliness, he sometimes forgets he's not that lonely anymore - and for that, he can entirely thank Kai. Sure, he had Thomas and Lucas before, but nothing compares to the way he is with Kai, knowing he was his first real friend as an adult, the one he can easily confides in too. Minho would always do everything to lighten the burden on his shoulders, just so Kai can breathe a little easier, from time to time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝗲͜𝘂͜𝗻͜𝗵͜𝗮͜&͜𝘀͜𝘂͜𝗻͜𝗴͜𝗻͜𝗮͜𝗺͜
Eunha likes to take care of everyone around her - she's good at that, she knows she can do it well. Yet, sometimes, she forgets to take care of herself, because that's not as easy. So of course, she's thankful for Sungnam, who always helped her carry her burden, and made sure she was going easy on herself. He's always been her first soldier, and she would always be his first defender.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝘀͜𝗼͜𝗼͜𝘆͜𝘂͜𝗻͜&͜𝗳͜𝗲͜𝗹͜𝗶͜𝘅͜
Sooyun can bear the pain and the guilt of they've done alone - and for that, the fact that the others suffer because of her is unbearable, especially with Felix. She always adored him, more shyly than with the others, sure, but he held a special place in his heart. And while she's thankful because he gave her a second chance, he's also grateful for the way he took care of Yongsun and Adam, when she couldn't do it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝘆͜𝗼͜𝗻͜𝗴͜𝘀͜𝘂͜𝗻͜&͜𝗮͜𝗱͜𝗮͜𝗺͜
Yongsun is like a lost puppy - always trailing behind his group, searching for validation, always wanting admiration. Maybe that's what caused his downfall in the first place - yet, the guilt he has, he's incapable of projecting onto the others. That's why he's still friends with Adam, so close to him. Because if he loves Adam a little bit harder now, maybe he'll learn how to love himself too.

Cazador's Ritual Runes, Translated
Tumblr media
Inner: AMPLIFY + HIM + FLOW + EMPOWR [sic] Middle: WE OFFER THE FORCE OF LIFE Outer: WE GATHER HERE TO INVOKE THE POWER OF BLOD [sic]
Mephistopheles can't spell for beans.
(Detailed analysis & conjecture regarding this text, the Rite of Profane Ascension, & Astarion's translated scars under the cut.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second ring was the easiest, as the characters are very similar to Latin letters and clearly read out "WE OFFER THE FORCE OF LIFE." Characters were now known for C, E, F, H, I, L, O, R, T, and W. It wasn't clear yet if there were cases.
I was struggling with the first ring, though after decoding the second, I could get a likely "_M_LIF_ + _IM + _LOW + EM_OWR". Guessing the character for P, Y, and A based on context gave me "AMPLIFY + _IM + _LOW + EMPOWR", but I had doubts over the first characters for words two and three. I suspected they would be HIM and FLOW, but the H and F characters didn't match the H from the second ring's "THE" or the F from "AMPLIFY". Also, "empower" was misspelled, which made me pause.
Abandoning those for a moment, the third ring mapped well onto "WE _ATHER HERE TO I__O_E THE _OWER OF _LO_". Ruling out known letters which were not present, I could guess "WE GATHER HERE TO I__O_E THE POWER OF _LO_", but again the P from "POWER" was not the same as the P from "AMPLIFY" in the inner ring. However, it was very, very similar, and nothing else fit, so I committed, now suspecting there were capital versions of some letters included in the text.
At this point I went digging for resources. I found a copy of an Infernal alphabet on the Forgotten Realms wiki, and while it looks like the typeface Larian used is a bespoke creation for the game rather than a 1:1 copy of this alphabet, the letters for lowercase G, N, K, B, and D were nearly identical. Y (from AMPLIFY) also matched perfectly, confirming that earlier guess. This gave a clear "WE GATHER HERE TO INVOKE THE POWER OF BLOD."
This resulted in: AMPLIFY + _IM + _LOW + EMPOWR WE OFFER THE FORCE OF LIFE WE GATHER HERE TO INVOKE THE POWER OF BLOD
Looking at the wiki for capital letters, the only ones I could find which might reasonably fit the _IM missing character (assuming the Larian alphabet was based off this wiki typography) were A, B, H, O, T, V, and Y. Of those choices, only AIM, HIM, TIM, and VIM were words, and as cheesy as Cazador is, I couldn't imagine him saying AMPLIFY TIM FLOW EMPOWR. Given the alternatives, HIM was the only choice which made sense.
I went through the same process for _LOW, but this character seems unmatchable to me. By far it looks the most like the E from the Infernal alphabet, with maybe a capital Y being a distant second. However, ELOW and YLOW are certainly not words, and absent all other comparatives, the character in question does resemble a fancy F. Barring other languages, FLOW with a capital or unique F fits best.
AMPLIFY + HIM + FLOW + EMPOWR WE OFFER THE FORCE OF LIFE WE GATHER HERE TO INVOKE THE POWER OF BLOD
I did double-check the texts available in Cazador's mansion just to make sure this hadn't been translated elsewhere (after I'd done all the work, of course), and the only written text of relevance is from the Black Mass scroll you find near Vellioth's skull. It reads:
The Rite of Profane Ascension Oh, piteous dead! Oh, ravenous dead! Immortality is your gift, but darkness is your prison and hunger its gaoler. The Rite of Profane Ascension will release you. Walk in the sun. Suffer not from hunger. Grow your power beyond anything you imagined. A pact has been made with the Lord of Hellfire. Deliver unto him seven thousand souls, each bearing an Infernal mark, and you shall be free of your chains. You shall know true power. Deliver the souls. Speak the words. Ecce dominus, Has animas offero in sacrificio, Nunc volo potestatem quam pollicitus es mihi.
The Latin translates (as best I can tell with my incredibly weak Latin) to:
Behold [the] Lord, I offer these souls in sacrifice, I want the power thou hast promised me.
Which is interesting, but not clearly mapped to the Infernal above. Then I started wondering what relationship Astarion's scars have with all this, but thankfully, someone else has done the work here!
Astarion's scars have been transcribed and translated in a wonderfully detailed Reddit post by northpaw_s in 2020, but the salient points are that they appear to be in a mishmash of mangled Latin and Romance languages ("Infernal") and read:
Hoyc inferiu non iurare per igneu Naec virba loquor Eoai mundo muoat
Which appears to roughly translate to:
This soul swears no oath by fire Nor words does he speak In the realm of death
This makes sense if it's a fragment of a contract. I suspect the other spawn's scars are all identical to Astarion's for game mechanics/development reasons, but it'd be wild if they did have minor differences to complete the rest of the phrases! I know the scars don't show on their backs they way they do on Astarion's outside of the moment of the ritual, but it really does make me wonder if there's a complete text of the poem in some writer's documentation somewhere.
Anyway, what did you do with your Thursday night?

Hi angel on Earth. I tried to commit suicide on Friday. As I went to complete it I was distracted by the Saint Benedict medal that was on my desk. I never knew what it meant and for some reason I had to know in the moment so I went on a deep dive googling it and eventually fell asleep before I got around to committing the act. I’d like to think that was divine intervention of some sort. It’s Sunday now. I still want to do it but now it’s in passing waves. Can I receive a prayer? I know that I have the strength to keep going but I am so tired and sad and hopeless and lonely and don’t really want to anymore. I’ve been holding on for so long but it only gets worse. Idk what lesson I’m supposed to be learning from all the trials and tribulations. Thank you for your work. Gods love flows through you and unite many. Have a blessed day
Visit these links tonight!!
——
I don’t have the entire medal memorized because it’s rich in prayer but my favorite from it on the back, it’s literally an exorcism prayer. Look at the medal:
C. S. S. M. L. (Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux):
“The Holy Cross be my light.”
N. D. S. M. D. (Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux):
“May the dragon never be my guide!”
The Latin Exorcism Prayers:
Saint Benedict said the following words after monks tried killing him. Once he realized they poisoned his drink, he said this:
V. R. S. (Vade Retro Satan):
“Get away, Satan.”
N. S. M. V. (Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana):
“Never tempt me with your vanities!”
S. M. Q. L. (Sunt Mala Quae Libas):
“What you offer me is evil.”
I. V. B. (Ipse Venena Bibas):
“Drink the poison yourself!”
——-
I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Exorcism Prayers for the Laity
SAINT BENEDICT MEDAL PRAYER
(2-min. read)
“𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞.” (𝐄𝐱𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐆𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚)
1 HISTORY
During a trial for witchcraft at Natternberg near the Abbey of Metten in Bavaria in the year 1647, the accused women testified that they had no power over Metten, which was under the protection of the cross. Upon investigation, a number of painted crosses, surrounded by the letters which are now found on Benedictine medals, were found on the walls of the abbey, but their meaning had been forgotten.
Finally, in an old manuscript, written in 1415, was found a picture representing St. Benedict holding in one hand a staff which ends in a cross, and a scroll in the other. On the staff and scroll were written in full the words of which the mysterious letters were the initials. Medals bearing the image of St. Benedict, a cross, and these letters began now to be struck in Germany, and soon spread over Europe. They were first approved by Benedict XIV in his briefs of 23 December 1741, and 12 March 1742.
(Catholic Encyclopedia)
2 LATIN INVOCATIONS
C. S. S. M. L. (Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux):
“May the Holy Cross be my light.”
N. D. S. M. D. (Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux):
“Let not the dragon be my guide.”
V. R. S. (Vade Retro Satan):
“Begone Satan!”
N. S. M. V. (Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana):
“Never tempt me with your vanities!”
S. M. Q. L. (Sunt Mala Quae Libas):
“All that pours from you is evil!”
I. V. B. (Ipse Venena Bibas):
“Drink your own poison!”

“I am an oblate of a Benedictine Abbey. A couple of years ago, we had a terrible tornado in our town. I prayed to St. Benedict that my home and neighborhood would not be touched and they were not. I credit the prayers of St. Benedict.”

“My entire family has been wearing the Saint Benedict medal since the beginning of the pandemic. My husband is a physician working at one of the busiest hospitals in New York. I have a toddler that puts everything in his mouth. We travel a lot. We never got sick, never tested positive for COVID. We pray to Saint Benedict every night. He’s protecting us.”
(houseofjoppa)
Maria
Maria, a mother of three from Italy, recalls a time of great distress in her family. "There was a palpable sense of unease in our home," she says. "Nightmares, unexplained tensions, and a general feeling of malaise were frequent." A devout Catholic, Maria turned to her faith for solace and protection. After consulting with her parish priest, she placed St. Benedict Medals in her home and on her children. "It was as if a weight was lifted," she recounts. "The atmosphere in our house changed, and my children slept peacefully again."

Latin Composition Part 6: Tips and Resources
Link to the masterpost with other parts
Some nuances worth knowing
Literary devices—here’s a nice list
Mute liquid Vowel combinations. A mute (b,c,d,g,p, or t) followed by a liquid (l or r) can count as a single consonant, as long as they are in the same word. This does not happen across words. So, amat rem viri must be scanned /u – – u–/. However, ille prope me can be /– u u u –/ or /– – u u –/.
I vs. J – Vergil famously scans Laviniaque in Aeneid 1.2 as Lavinjaque. Do what you need to make the meter work. I’d avoid doing it across too many letters though, and it’s frowned upon with 3rd declension i-stems. That is, avoid omnjum or proljum. (Though omnja is fine).
Iambic correption/brevis brevians— some words can become [u u] even when they’re ‘supposed to be’ [u —]. Be careful with this. It’s not very common except for mihi and tibi.
Some others include cedo, cito, duo, ego, homo, modo, puto, (ne)scio, uolo, ibi, ubi, mihi, tibi, sibi, nisi, quasi. Just don’t go too crazy.
A few stylistic notes
Apparently you don’t want lines in a row to have the exact same meter if you could avoid it, especially in hexameter
Leonine although end-rhymes were somewhat gauche, it was common to create leonine rhymes within hexameters across the caesura.
Try to avoid having too many words line up with the feet. Arma vi|rumque ca|no is far better than Vae tibi!| tu facis| aspera!
Use dactyls when you want to speed up the tone (either action or levity). Use lots of spondees if you want something to be grave or serious.
The first and last words of the line are the most important. Try to use word order to show extra-grammatical relationships. e.g.: saevae memorem iunonis ob iram.
Roman rhetoric preferred a level of "suspense" so that the last word or part of thought would be the kicker that brought everything all together.
Generally, less elision is better though you can play some fun games with it for ambiguity or tone. Aeneid 1.28 is my all time fave. Vergil even elides over his caesura to drive home how mad Juno is: et genus invīsum, et raptī Ganymēdis honōrēs.
Earlier poets (Catullus) elide more than later poets (Ovid). Don’t break your back over it though, and don’t ruin your artistic vision for it.
The last the syllables of an elegiac distich are usually a two-syllable word, but that’s mostly just for love poetry. Three-syllable words really ought to be avoided though.
You should generally avoid ending a line with a pronoun or a single syllable word, with noted exceptions, like forms of sum.
Tutorials
Writing Latin verse from Classical Journal (1957)
An introduction to Latin lyric verse composition by Lupton, J. H. 05
Progressive exercises in Latin elegiac verse  by Gepp, C. Granville This book has an intensely in-depth list of "do's" and "do-nots" for more advanced poetae
A series of lectures with notes—this one goes pretty in-depth, both Greek and Latin. I’d def read other stuff first, but it’s a decent course to really solidify knowledge.
Resources while writing
Logeion/Retro — Eng-Latin dictionary
Latinitium dictionaries— Both Lat-Eng and Eng-Latin, but less info on attestation and quotations. Use the two in tandem!
Wiktionary— good info on vowel lengths in oblique forms
Gradus ad Parnassum-- AMAZING resource: acts like a thesaurus and also gives syllable quantity. PLUS it has a list of words by meter!
Macronizer my beloved. Great for checking your meter
PHI Latin texts – searchable for attestations and all kinds of good stuff if you’re worried a phrasing isn’t Latinate enough
Musisque Deoque – searchable archive of Latin poetry from the beginning to the 1500s. Search by word, meter, and more! Great for finding examples or if you’re worried about if something sounds good or bad.
Tyrtarion – listen to lyric poetry as music (since it’s supposed to be a song). They do a better job than most.
Aeneid scanned--
Negenborn – multilingual Catullus guide, including scansion!

hi there angel!!
first thank you for your blog, I really didn’t know there was such a beautiful Catholic community here and your posts and everything help remind me of God and to focus on Him ultimately when I’m too deep in scrolling… your post recently about suffering and lying in bed was absolutely so beautiful and it helped me think of my own suffering differently and it really helps because I suffer from constant mental illness and migraines.
anyway, do you have any favorite prayers? recently I was listening to a sung version of the Anima Christi and wow… that prayer is my favorite now.
thank you for spending your time praying for all of us!! ill be keeping you in my prayers c: hopefully you recover from your cold soon!
Good Evening! 🌌
Aww, thank you so much! I didn’t know there was one either before I made this blog over three years ago. A handful of them aren’t active anymore so once in a while you can find some gems but be careful tumblr tags, they aren’t all holy, let’s say, since anyone can tag anything they want.
I know the pain of those migraines for sure. See, you too can offer your own suffering up. Even on the darkest moments where you feel weakest or like you lost control, or maybe lost or unwanted by others, you too can offer up your pain and suffering.
I have some favorite prayers like the St. Michael Prayer and then an exorcism prayer Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux found on the St. Benedict Medal is also a favorite. It goes like this:
C. S. S. M. L. (Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux):
“The Holy Cross be my light.”
N. D. S. M. D. (Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux):
“May the dragon never be my guide!”
V. R. S. (Vade Retro Satan):
“Get away, Satan.”
N. S. M. V. (Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana):
“Never tempt me with your vanities!”
S. M. Q. L. (Sunt Mala Quae Libas):
“What you offer me is evil.”
I. V. B. (Ipse Venena Bibas):
“Drink the poison yourself!”
There is a wonderful video of this exorcism prayer sung by Harpa Dei that you can watch with English subtitles here. I find it quite comforting.
youtube
————
I LOVE Anima Christi! By any chance, is that video this one below because this one got stuck in my head for like two weeks. 👀

Thank you so much for your prayers! 😭🙏🏻 I cherish praying for all of you.

do you ever fall in love with a twelfth century german poet?
i do. since we don't know his name we call him the archpoet, and i could not have thought of a better name for this guy
The Archpoet (c. 1130 – c. 1165), or Archipoeta (in Latin and German), is the name given to an anonymous 12th-century author of ten medieval Latin poems, the most famous being his "Confession" found in the Carmina Burana manuscript (under CB 191). Along with Hugh Primas of Orléans (with whom he has sometimes been confused), he is cited as the best exemplar of Goliardic poetry and one of the stellar poets of the Latin Middle Ages.
Wikipedia, "Archpoet"
please read the rest of the article. it is full of people trying to sound objective and scholarly about someone who i have to assume was the best drinking buddy of the christian era. (there was probably at least one maenad who did it better, [χαιρε καλλιστε εμε :Þ], but the point stands)
...bocaccio is the best AUTHOR of the christian era. archpoet had to have been the best DRINKING BUDDY, and also wrote poetry about the most ETERNAL #MOODS. ich bin ein biiiiißchen betrunken aber ich use meine wörter in specific ways.
yeah, my master's degree is in german translation, so it does feel slightly traitorous to be like "my favorite german author is known for Latin poetry". deal with it. providing aid and comfort to the enemy is my favorite pastime.
Reasons I love Archpoet:
all of his stuff can be sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle
"mihi numquam spiritus prophetiae datur, nisi prius fuerit venter bene satur" (i never get the gift of prophecy on an empty stomach)
He is always like this. It's always "Listen bud, the 'stellar poet[ry] of the Latin Middle Ages' comes AFTER the drinking and fucking. It's not my fault I have a body made of meat."
ScorpioMartianus, who built his youtube presence on Latin translations of Disney songs, has an amazing voice which he put toward providing a proper rendition of the Archpoet's work.

In New Zealand you can call professors by their first name or Title Surname, I default to the latter for non-men professors mainly because nobody else does. Good to know for the UK!
I was first taught to write good business emails in my first job after I pissed off a major supplier's office manager by being too [what I thought was] efficient [it was actually read as brusque][I was 19].
Dear/kia ora/good morning/mōrena So And So,
[General well wishes, e.g. hope your day is going well, thanks for handling that last thing I asked for so smoothly, &c]
What you actually need to say
[Polite sentiments, e.g. I look forward to hearing from you, let me know if you need any more info, always here to help]
Kind regards/ngā mihi/yours truly
Your name
Your contact details
Your professional qualifications if you're being snotty and/or making a point and/or they're underestimating you
not to sound like a boomer, but I need some people to learn how to write emails in a semi-professional (at the very least) format so you're not cold emailing a business/potential employer/any other stranger about formal matters in the exact same way you'd DM a close friend on instagram
the formality/language can loosen up in the email chain once you've established a rapport and you match the other person if they're being less formal, but please don't have the very first email you send a stranger be written in all lowercase ultra-casual sms slang with no greeting or signature and a billion emojis
