January 20, 1965
Los Angeles, California
The Byrds began recording an unreleased Bob Dylan song, "Mr. Tamborine Man," at Columbia Recording Studios. Believing that the band had yet to gel musically, producer Terry Melcher hired session musicians to play the instrumentation along with Jim (Roger) McGuinn.

The live-action TV series “Dick Tracy” debuted on ABC on September 11, 1950. It lasted 1 season with Ralph Byrd, who had played the sleuth in all four Republic movie serials and two of the RKO feature-length films, reprised his role for the series.

The Various Parallels Between the Mamas & the Papas, Fleetwood Mac and Jefferson Airplane
Mamas & Papas’ Michelle Phillips and Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick both started their careers as catalogue models before switching to music.
Michelle, Grace and Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks all joined their first bands alongside their boyfriends at the time [Michelle in M&P with first husband John Phillips in 1964, Grace in the Great Society with her first husband Jerry Slick in 1965, and Stevie in Fritz with former boyfriend and future FM bandmate Lindsey Buckingham in 1967].
Mamas & Papas, Fleetwood Mac and Jefferson Airplane all famously had lots of messy relationship drama and gossip off stage.
Each group’s most successful album was released in February [M&P’s ‘If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears’ in Feb. 1966, JA’s ‘Surrealistic Pillow’ in Feb. 1967 and FM’s ‘Rumours’ in Feb. 1977].
All three groups are renowned for their impressive harmonies.
John & Michelle and Paul Kantner & Grace both conceived blonde daughters [Chynna Phillips in 1968 and China Kantner in 1971].
FM’s Christine McVie and M&P’s Cass Elliot were unfairly not considered eye candy by the press like Michelle and Stevie were.
Michelle, Stevie and Grace all received unnecessary sexism by reporters and male rock fans.
Michelle, Stevie and Grace all moved to San Francisco when they were starting out in the ‘60s.
Some of the male band members of all three groups were associated with notorious groupies [John and Denny Doherty with Nurit Wilde; Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Lindsey with Connie Hamzy; and Paul and Marty Balin with Martha Wax].
Both Michelle and Grace preferred wearing casual clothes and not much make-up instead of looking glamorous. Stevie was also known for wearing layers and not showing a lot of skin publicly, which is rare for female popstars.
A lot of people consider Michelle and Stevie similar looking to iconic movie stars [Michelle with Gene Tierney and Stevie with Carrie Fisher].
Christine and Cass were already locally successful music artists before joining FM and M&P.
Paul & Grace and Lindsey & Stevie both recorded and released standalone LPs as duos when they were couples [Paul & Grace with ‘Sunfighter’ in 1971 and Lindsey & Stevie with ‘Buckingham Nicks’ in 1973].

"Jazz Lab:" A Quintessential Hard Bop Collaboration
Introduction: The late 1950s were a transformative period in jazz, as musicians explored new forms of expression within the evolving subgenre of hard bop. This era gave rise to some of the most innovative recordings in jazz history, many of which still resonate with listeners today. One such recording is “Jazz Lab”, a remarkable collaboration between alto saxophonist and arranger Gigi Gryce and…

The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Cream, Spencer Davis and ‘Keep On Running,’ The Animals, The Byrds, The Troggs and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, emphasized the differences between us: Youth and Them, them were the tired and old warmongers.

my forever favourite producer, terry melcher, passed this day in 2004. 🤍
terry is incredibly special to me. he was so important in shaping the 60s surf and folk rock sounds and produced for artists like the byrds, the beach boys, and paul revere & the raiders. he also made music with bruce johnston of the beach boys as bruce & terry, and released his own solo albums, which are so so beautiful and i definitely reccomended!
