British Expressions: Name Edition
Some of my favourite phrases and expressions that I feel more people should know and use. These phrases and expressions all use the names of real people or fictional characters.
1. Gordon Bennett
An exclamation of incredulity equivalent to "Jesus Christ!". A reference to an American James Gordon Bennett Jr., who became infamous in Britain due to his many scandals. Example: "Gordon Bennett, where did you come from?! I didn't hear you come in, are you trying to scare me to death?"
2. Sweet Fanny Adams
Often shorted to Sweet F.A, it is a reference to Fanny Adams, a child who was murdered in 1867. Originally, it meant something of bad quality. Nowadays, it's used interchangeably with "fuck all" (nothing). Example: "That lass knows sweet Fanny Adams!"
3. By Jove
An equivalent to "oh my God". A reference to the Roman god Jupiter (also called Jove; Zeus in Greek mythology). Example: "[Crash] By Jove what was that?!"
4. Scrooge
Named for Ebenezer Scrooge, Charles Dickens' main character in A Christmas Carol, to call someone a Scrooge is to call them a miser, mean or un-festive. Example: "You can be such a Scrooge. Maybe I should start calling you Ebenezer?"
5. Bejesus
Derived from "By Jesus", bejesus is said when someone is surprised. Common in Britain and Ireland. Example: "Bejesus, don't scare me like that!"

Many Top Quality Wines from Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery to Enjoy
Many Top Quality Wines from Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery to Enjoy #bcwine #bcvqa @mtboucheriewine @winebcdotcom #winewriter #somm #Riesling #Chardonnay
Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery I have been a fan of Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery‘s wines for many years. I still have a bottle of their 2003 Summit Reserve Semillon I purchased at the winery that I hope to open this year with friends. On my recent trip to Kelowna, I messaged their winemaker, Jeff Hundertmark, to see if I could meet with him. Not knowing if the grape harvest was underway yet for…

Of Jupiter & Saturn
I once had a conversation with my brother about one of his many sons.
About the simple way.
The grace of nature and it's many boons.
This life is simple.
To understand the divine regents, the source of all things and all things themselves is simple if you live with your heart.
He remarked on how this was a glorious trait both our children shared.
I agreed.
As simple as a moment could be.
The smelling of a rose.
Of all the glorious children that came forth from the houses of heaven we saw a similarity between the greatest.
It lay in the gentle bosoms of flowers.
Boys who grew into men then forged empires and farmers alike all found the truth of the divine in the scent of a flower.
We called these children the romantics.
They sought in love to respond to love in their honest and immediate natures.
So too to a flower or a fruit tree or vine would they naturally respond.
In depth.
To learn from honest intent to love all of that which could be learned, to then know how best to respond in kind through preference.
So to a tree that they would take fruit from they would plant and water many seeds or feed the tree that bore them fruit or both.
So too to any vine or bush.
Then more deeply they would question, still from intent to love and respond to love with love.
Who planted the first of these seeds?
Who lay the earth down for the seeds to be planted or the sun in the sky for them to grow.
Who moves the clouds still even, they questioned.
From this they grew.
Into mighty souls beyond compare, resplendent in their glory which was naught but of all creation perfectly reflected in them.
Toward knowledge and enlightenment they moved with haste with the winds of love, passion and curiosity filling their sails.
It was then that we called an end to our war.
It was then that we decided that in time we would walk among them again to raise them up as once we had before.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville
"A gentle joyousness-a mighty mildness of repose in swiftness, invested the gliding whale. Not the white bull Jupiter swimming away with ravished Europa clinging to his graceful horns; his lovely, leering eyes sideways intent upon the maid; with smooth bewitching fleetness, rippling straight for the nuptial bower in Crete; not Jove, not that great majesty Supreme! did surpass the glorified White Whale as he so divinely swam."

No matter how much I might complain about my new job, money is actually pretty fucking magical for mental health. I paid my rent and my bills and my account isn’t even empty. o_O I can literally feel a permanent bit of financial worry I didn’t even realise was there begin to melt away.
