7. Also planning on reaching out to friends today who are likely equally down in the dumps to check on them.
8. Planning and budgeting for big purchases before Inauguration in case of tariffs or chips act issues (I work a bit in the semiconductor industry in the US and abroad). Example: buying a new vehicle (have needed to do this for a while but this speeds it up), we need a new dishwasher, doing some quick and small renovations in our house like new lighting.

At the height of the pandemic during mid 2020, I decided to enter the personal computer (PC) market since I needed a computer for online school and software programming, as well as wanted one for leisurely activities such as gaming. However, I saw a big increase in prices of pre-built PCs compared to before the pandemic and wondered why this was the case. After some research, I learned more about what was going on in the world and the causes of the increased prices for PCs during the pandemic.
Firstly, there was an immense increase in demand for not just computers, but for almost any electronics that require semiconductor chips in general, leading to something called the global chip shortage. This was partly due to the rise in remote distancing, remote work, and remote learning which was caused by Covid-19 lockdowns. It turned out that I, as a consumer, directly contributed to the increase in demand for chips as I was in need of and wanted to buy PCs and more electronics. During this time, we also saw a huge growth in the use of cryptocurrencies, a notable example being Bitcoin. These currencies were obtained by mining using GPUs, or Graphics Processing Units, which is one of the most important parts in any computer, let alone a gaming focused one. All of this contributed to a rise in demand for PCs, which in turn contributed to the rise in prices for PCs.
Secondly, there was a notable decrease in supply for semiconductor chips, mostly due to the worldwide lockdowns during the height of the pandemic when I entered the market. Companies were forced to lower their in-person workforce, and this was especially detrimental to manufacturing companies like chip makers. Even after the height of the pandemic and lockdowns, chip production could not be greatly increased to meet demand. This was because of the complicated and time consuming process of producing semiconductors and the very limited number of chip manufacturers in general. Extending production could take months and millions to billions of dollars, so increasing supply is not feasible for the short term.
This increase in demand and decrease in supply of PCs can be explained in the graph above. Here, the demand curve is shifted to the right from D to D’ and the supply curve is shifted to the left from S to S', causing the equilibrium price to be increased from P to P’, while the effect on equilibrium quantity is still ambiguous (although I suspect that the magnitude of the demand shift is greater than the supply shift, so the equilibrium quantity is increased a little as well). This increase in equilibrium price, for the most part, explains why the prices for PCs I saw online were so much higher than before the pandemic. During the pandemic, people, including myself, shifted towards a much more virtual world, whether that be through Zoom for distance learning, Discord for calling with friends, or video games to spend free time. Personally, one notable factor for me that was affected by the pandemic was the market of video game consoles, specifically the Nintendo Switch. Around this time, I had decided to browse the market for a Nintendo Switch since I had exhausted most of the games on the Wii U and Wii for the time being. This original equilibrium quantity demanded and equilibrium price can be represented as Q1 and P1 respectively. However, the demand for this console had increased overall during the pandemic due to the spare free time people had as they social distanced and the desire to play with loved ones online. Consequently, this shifts the demand curve to the right, and the quantity demanded increases, leading to a higher price as shown below by equilibrium quantity demanded Q2 and equilibrium price P2.
However, Nintendo kept their prices at $300. The price increase, in reality, took the form of scalpers mass buying out supply and reselling that same supply of Nintendo Switches at a higher price. When I had looked at the prices for the console during the pandemic, the Switch had increased from its original price of $300 to $500, even sometimes $800. These were all by unofficial sellers, selling them used or new for extremely high prices due to the increase in demand for the console during the pandemic. As a result of the high demand, there were people who were still willing to pay the high amount for the console, as shown by the reviews below from people who had purchased it for $400 or $500.
Consequently, I had to decide if I should buy the console for an extremely high price, leading to an opportunity cost of the hundreds of dollars that could be used for food or even more video games on my other consoles or computer. Ultimately, I had decided to wait a couple of months in which it then returned back to normal price, using the money to buy other goods.
Today, demand has decreased as the Switch has been out for a relatively long period of time and is no longer as much of a fad. However, supply has also decreased due to a semiconductor chip shortage. As a result, they are not able to make as many Nintendo Switch consoles, thus shifting the supply curve to the left along with the demand curve shifting left. Consequently, the equilibrium quantity decreases to Q2 as shown in the graph below while the price remains ambiguous since the equilibrium price depends on how far the demand and supply curves shift leftward.

NVIDIA Corporation NVDA was bouncing about 3.5% on Thursday, in tandem with the S&P 500, which was surging almost 2% higher off Wednesday’s closing price and almost 5% off Thursday’s open.
The Labor Department reported an 8.2% year-over-year increase in the consumer price index for September, which caused many stocks to gap down Thursday. However, bearish volume came into the S&P 500 intraday, causing the market to spike higher.
Newegg Commerce Inc. NEGG announced that Nvidia’s NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards are now available at its online store. The new graphic card delivers up to four times the performance of the previous version and are powered by the new NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture.

The news caused a relief bounce in Nvidia’s stock, which has been weighed down heavily recently following the U.S. government’s decision to place restrictions on exports of some high-end chips to China.
On Tuesday, Citigroup analyst Atif Malik maintained a Buy rating on Nvidia and lowered the price target from $248 to $210.
The Nvidia Chart: Nvidia has been trading in a downtrend since Aug. 16, with the most recent lower low formed at the $112.43 on Tuesday and the most recent confirmed lower high printed on Oct. 6 at $136.56. On Thursday, Nvidia was spiking higher but not enough to negate the downtrend with the formation of a higher high.
If Nvidia closes the trading day near its high-of-day price, the stock will print a bullish engulfing candlestick, which could indicate higher prices will come again on Friday. If that happens, bullish traders will want to see Nvidia regain the eight-day exponential moving average (EMA) and trade up toward the 21-day EMA.
If Nvidia closes the trading day with a significant upper wick, lower prices may come on Friday, which could suggest that the next lower high within the downtrend has occurred. The second most likely scenario in that case is that Nvidia will print an inside bar pattern on Friday to consolidate Thursday’s move higher.
There’s a gap that exists on Nivida’s chart between $145.47 and $149.59. Gaps on charts fill about 90% of the time, which indicates Nvidia will eventually trade up to fill the empty trading range, although it could be a long period of time before that happens.
Nvidia has resistance above at $119.46 and $125.86 and support below at $108.50 and at the psychologically important $100 mark.
