Schools and NHS caterers ‘must stop’ antibiotic overuse

Hospital and school caterers are not doing enough to stop farmers from overusing antibiotics in their animals, according to campaign groups.

Such overuse raises the risk of antibiotic resistance rendering key human medicines ineffective.

Health and animal welfare campaigners analysed 10 UK caterers’ policies and found a lack of a ban meant controls on antibiotics could be weak or absent.

The government, caterers and suppliers say voluntary measures are effective.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) points to a 55% drop in antibiotic use in food-producing animals since 2014 and an 83% decrease in the use of antibiotics most critical for human use.

Caterers who supply the public sector said they were committed to reducing unnecessary antibiotic use in animals farmed for food.

There is a global drive to reduce the use of antibiotics, in both human medicine and agriculture, to tackle the rise of ‘superbugs’ – strains of bacteria that can no longer be treated by certain drugs.

The Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics (ASOA) assessed the publicly-available food procurement policies of 10 of the UK’s leading caterers supplying the NHS, the education sector, care homes and prisons.

In a report released on Thursday, it claimed the firms had either “weak or non-existent” policies on antibiotic use.

It said the companies were “lagging well behind” the standards set by supermarkets and elsewhere in the commercial food sector.

Meanwhile, it found there is no current requirement for responsible antibiotic use in the government’s own public sector procurement standards. These are the mandatory food buying rules for the NHS, armed forces and prisons, and recommended best practice for schools and local authorities.

The alliance also found that Defra itself, which leads efforts to reduce antibiotic use on farms, has a contract with one of the firms criticised in the report.

Cóilín Nunan, the Alliance’s scientific advisor, told BBC News that the government could use its considerable purchasing power in public service contracts to encourage better controls on antibiotic use.

“The current situation shows a lack of joined-up thinking,” he said. “Defra is proposing legislation to ban the routine use of antibiotics on farms, yet it is concerning that a company that is not making a significant effort, based on what is publicly available, is winning a Defra contract.”

The catering company, ISS, said it took the responsible sourcing of food “incredibly seriously”.

“Every meal we serve meets stringent UK regulatory requirements and we work only with food suppliers who meet the high safety, animal welfare and traceability standards we demand as part of our contract terms,” a spokesperson said.

“We are currently in the process of updating our buying standards policy to formally address the use of antibiotics in our supply chain and will publish this document on our website in due course.”

ASOA comprises medical, environmental and animal welfare organisations who are worried that the continued overuse of antibiotics will render many of the lifesaving medicines we have today less effective.

That is because the infections that they are used to treat are continually adapting and they can evolve into forms that are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

One assessment in medical journal The Lancet calculates that more than 1.25m people worldwide are dying each year as the result of the emergence of new superbugs because of the overuse of antibiotics.

In the UK, the figure for deaths from drug-resistant infections is more than 7,500. These numbers are likely to increase and it is feared the development of new medicines to combat new infections will not keep up.

Governments across the world have acknowledged that the best way to slow the emergence of superbugs is to restrict the use of antibiotics, both in human and animal health.

Antibiotics are widely used on farms to protect animals from disease. But there has been concern that they can be routinely overused by the industry to prevent healthy animals, particularly those that are farmed intensively, from becoming ill. Consequently, government, agriculture and industry in the UK have agreed voluntary measures to limit their use.

Catherine McLaughlin, the chair of the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture (RUMA) Alliance, said UK farmers should be recognised for their antibiotic stewardship programmes.

She said: “UK livestock sectors have achieved great results over the past decade.

“The concept of responsible use of medicines, and the importance of using the right medicine at the right time, and in the right way, is now engrained in everyday language on UK farms.”

Thursday’s report by ASOA looked at the publicly available policies of 10 of the UK’s leading catering companies.

It found that Apetito, ISS, Newrest, OCS and WSH had no publicly available antibiotic use policy; Aramark, CH&CO, Compass Group UK, Elior and Sodexo do have policies, but none of the 10 prohibited the routine use of antibiotics.

UK laws ‘exceeded’

The BBC approached the caterers for comment. Those that responded said they were committed to stopping inappropriate antibiotic use in their supply chains and used recognised traceable suppliers and farms, including those accredited by food standard assurance schemes such as Red Tractor.

They pointed out such schemes require farmers to avoid the use of antibiotics unless there is a specific need to treat an illness and even then only under the direction of a veterinary practitioner.

They said they were fully compliant with the government buying standards for food and catering services.

Apetito said it had a “steadfast commitment” to “curtailing inappropriate antibiotic use” and carried out supplier audits to “ensure that traceability of our food and standards are maintained.”

CH&CO said it was removing preventative use of antibiotics from the supply chain by the end of 2024 and was working with suppliers to ensure all meat, fish, dairy and eggs served in their public and private sector cafés and restaurants do not contain preventative antibiotics.

Compass Group UK said its current standards around the use of antibiotics in the supply chain “exceed UK legislation and guidance” and that its animal welfare policy makes it clear that the routine prophylactic use of antibiotics must be avoided.

Sodexo said its supplier charter obliges suppliers to implement the highest practical standards of farm animal welfare and provides the use of antibiotics should not be routine, and that antibiotic reduction plans should also be implemented.

Elior responded to the BBC but said it was unable to gather the relevant information to provide a statement in time.

A Defra spokesperson said the government was currently revising veterinary medicines legislation to tackle antimicrobial resistance and reduce the preventative use of antibiotics to groups of animals.

“We do not support the routine or predictable use of antibiotics, particularly where they are used to compensate for inadequate farming practices.

“That is why we are working to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics in animals, while safeguarding animal welfare,” she added.

Will Anyone Want To Buy 2,000 Rhinos? We’ll Soon Find Out.

A South African entrepreneur built the world’s largest rhino farm. Here’s how everything fell apart—and what that means for the future of these at-risk animals.

John Hume once had an audacious plan. To combat rhino poaching, the South African entrepreneur aimed to create a massive rhinoceros breeding farm where the animals would be kept safe and their numbers could flourish on his vast, privately owned savanna. He’d fund the operation by sawing off and selling his animals’ horns.

With a legal rhino horn trade and a consistent supply from farms like his, he reasoned, horn prices would eventually drop and make poaching less attractive. Made of keratin, the same material as fingernails, rhino horn can grow back at a rate of about four inches per year. So selling horn, mostly to buyers in Asia for traditional medicine, carvings, and jewelry, could be sustainable—if it was ever legalized, according to his plan.

Now, about 15 years after he officially launched his farm and still without any legal international trade, the 81-year-old claims he’s reached a financial breaking point. He started with close to 200 southern white rhinos and now has almost 2,000.

This month, the rhinos and his entire 21,000-acre farm operation will be put up for auction online, with a starting bid of $10 million. Also for sale are his five hippos; 11 giraffe; and hundreds of buffalo, sheep, and goats—though not the gigantic horn collection he’s amassed. The sale begins on April 26 and ends on May 1, international Save the Rhino Day.

Hume announced he wants bidders who have “passion for conserving rhinos and the means to keep the breeding project going”—but exactly who might have the funds and the willingness remains an open question. And whether this sale could help conservation hinges entirely on the buyer.

“This case really does bring into focus a lot of issues that have been either put in the back burner or conveniently ignored when it comes to rhino conservation,” says Taylor Tench, a senior policy analyst who specializes in rhinos at the Environmental Investigation Agency, a watchdog group with offices in the United States and United Kingdom. For instance, though Hume's operation has helped increase rhino numbers in captivity, Tench questions how the practice is benefiting the species in the wild.

Tammy Hume, the auction’s spokesperson and John Hume’s daughter-in-law, told National Geographic that the farm’s finances underscore that any buyer—or buyers—will need a stronger revenue stream going forward. The hope, she says, is that it could come from biodiversity credits—a scheme akin to carbon credits in which individuals or countries would be rewarded for environmental stewardship.

Yet as with global rhino horn sales, that type of credit system isn’t a reality. Hume, who earned his wealth from real estate development and had some prior experience breeding rhinos, financed most of the farm out of pocket.

John Scanlon, a former secretary-general of CITES, the global treaty that regulates the wildlife trade and prohibits international horn sales, is cautiously hopeful about the sale. “There are more white rhino on the planet as a result of [Hume’s] intervention,” he says. “There’s an opportunity to relocate animals—where there are willing buyers.”

Any buyer, however, will also have to take on the cost of defending the animals. Hume spends more than $425,000 per month on farm operations—with more than half of that sum supporting security, according to posted auction documents. Since the farm’s last poaching incident in March 2017, Hume’s Platinum Rhino Conservation Project has managed to keep poachers out, but it’s required a behemoth security apparatus of helicopter patrols, a radar system, and dozens of armed game rangers and dogs.

Conserving Rhinos

There are now only about 22,000 rhinos across Africa. Most are near-threatened southern white rhinos, like those at Hume’s farm, though there are also almost-extinct northern white rhinos, and about 6,000 black rhinos, which are slightly smaller animals whose three subspecies are critically endangered.

Hume’s almost 2,000 white rhinos comprise a sizable portion of South Africa’s—and the world’s—wild population. Kruger National Park, home to the largest concentration, has long been a poaching hot spot, and it now has fewer than 4,000 rhinos—down from more than 10,000 in 2010.

The picture for rhinos isn’t rosy. Poachers killed about 450 rhinos in South Africa last year and roughly the same number the prior year, too. In Kenya and Zimbabwe, rhino poaching has dropped, but in South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia, it has “increased or effectively remained at consistent, concerning levels in recent years,” Tench says.

Moreover, the rhino horn market has been complex to interpret during the pandemic: Transport challenges likely fueled stockpiling of rhino horn and other wildlife goods, at least temporarily affecting rhino horn prices and supply. Perhaps, some conservationists fear, demand—and poaching—will climb as the world reopens and the stockpile is exhausted.

Captive rhinos could theoretically give a boost to wild populations: In 2009, five eastern black rhinos born in European zoos were successfully released into Rwanda’s Akagera National Park.

Last year Hume announced that he planned to release a hundred of his white rhinos into the wild each year, but no one offered to fund the effort.

That’s not surprising, according to Tench. There are very intense logistical and security requirements involved in finding a habitat with appropriate food, water, space, and safety from poachers, he says. It’s also unknown whether Hume’s rhinos, which are accustomed to supplemental feedings, would even be able to survive without ongoing assistance.

Complications in new places are also common.

In 2018, 11 black rhinos moved from two of Kenya’s national parks to another national park by WWF-Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service died, largely due to dehydration and disease. Four of six wild black rhinos that nonprofit African Parks attempted to relocate from South Africa to Chad died too, likely from starvation.

Rewilding, however, remains John Hume’s hope. “Captive breeding isn’t a forever situation. It’s an intervention to help prevent a species from going extinct,” Tammy Hume says.

Likely Buyers?

Historically, South Africa has exported hundreds of rhinos for breeding and display at zoos. Between 2010 and 2021, China imported more than a hundred live white rhinos from South Africa, according to National Geographic’s review of CITES trade records.

Conservation groups have worried that a Chinese company might start breeding rhinos and set up its own domestic horn market—skirting CITES restrictions—but there’s no evidence of such horn operations currently, says Mark Jones, head of policy for the United Kingdom-based Born Free Foundation, a nonprofit that opposes taking animals from the wild.

“It is unlikely that South Africa would knowingly allow live rhino exports to China or any other CITES party if it suspects the rhinos will be utilized for medicinal use. However, unlikely is not the same as impossible,” says Tench.

Asked if the Humes would sell their rhinos to China, Tammy says Platinum’s current focus is selling off the entire farm in one block, and she wouldn’t comment on if they would refuse certain purchasers.

State-run entities, provincial level parks within South Africa, private reserves, zoological institutions, or foreign countries could all be bidders for at least some of the rhinos, though there isn’t a scarcity of rhinos for zoos, Tench notes.

African Parks, which manages 22 national parks and protected areas in Africa, told National Geographic that it will not be a bidder. No other individual or group has publicly said it would bid on the animals, either.

The South African government says it can’t yet comment on if it would buy any of Hume’s animals or prohibit certain kinds of sales to foreign buyers—something that’s within their purview under CITES, since they’d need to issue export permits.

A Real Tall Story

If you read my last post, The Man Who Never Was?, you’d already be aware my family owned a dairy farm which doubled as a hotel. There, sometime in the late 1930s, my then thirteen-year-old brother, Sonny, and our cousin, Alex, hatched a plan to grow… Wait, I think I’m kind of getting ahead of myself.  

It all started with a boy I’ll call Jerry who’d come up from New York City for a few weeks one summer on vacation with his parents. Seeing my brother and cousin, who, as it happened, had just undergone growth spurts, Jerry was amazed at how tall these country boys were and kept pestering them for their secret.

It took Jerry some persuading because they were reluctant to divulge the source of their knowledge (or that Alex was actually from the Bronx visiting family).

At last, Jerry broke down their resistance. Swearing him to secrecy, they explained that country boys grew as tall as they did because of what they discovered raising crops.

Taking Jerry to the barn, they filled a pail with cow manure, had him take off his shoes and socks and stand in it for half an hour. To Jerry, it made perfect sense. After all, fertilizer worked on crops, why not people?

Every day, after the treatment, they measured Jerry’s progress by having him stand with his back to a support beam and notching off his height with a nail.  And every day, the latest notch would be at least half an inch higher on the beam than the previous day’s. At the rate he was growing, this city kid would be catching up with these country boys and maybe looking down on them long before it was time to go home.

The plan was working out just fine till Jerry’s parents you might say, caught wind of it. Why they wondered did their little darling smell like a bovine’s behind?

Pressed for answers Jerry cracked like a soft boiled egg, his oath of silence jettisoned faster than a made man in the witness protection program.

As for Sonny and Alex, the shit hit the fan. How they were punished, however, has been lost in the mists of time. However, I was led to believe their punishment was tempered by stifled laughter and just a hint of pride.

Not totally turned off by crass, unabashed commercialism? Good. I mean Good!

Rhinos, tigers, pangolins – we’re used to hearing about the mammals that are snatched from the wild so that their body parts can be sold. But did you know that you can buy and sell 36 percent of all known reptile species over the internet?

That’s more than one in three species, including the endangered speckled tortoise (the world’s smallest species of tortoise) and the Seychelles tiger chameleon.

Reptiles are consistently overlooked by trade regulations. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is the world’s mechanism for protecting wildlife in global markets.

This global agreement is supposed to regulate the trade of species to prevent them being overexploited, but a new study has revealed that more than 75 percent of reptiles traded online are species that are not covered by CITES. And as the online trade has grown, even reptiles protected by CITES are being taken from their natural habitats and sold to buyers around the world.

Reptiles are mostly traded for two reasons. In the fashion industry, their skins are made into leather. Reptile skins are what CITES mostly records, as this trade happens on a commercial scale. Thousands of skins of crocodiles, in particular, but lizards and snakes too, are shipped around the world to make boots, purses, and watch straps among other things.

Much less well documented, according to the new study, which I have also found in my own research, is the smaller scale trade in individual reptiles for “personal” use, like the pet trade.

Scaling back the trade

At first, it may not seem that the sale of one reptile here and there presents a problem. But the wildlife trade is a global phenomenon.

The tens, if not hundreds of thousands of individual sales of reptiles taking place around the world every year add up. The result is that small populations of reptiles – some of which only live in one particular place – are threatened with extinction.

The demand for rare and unique companion animals helps fuel this.

Farming reptiles, or breeding them in captivity, is often touted as a solution, but this approach has its own problems.

Captive breeding has been a source of illegal activity in the past. Businesses that were supposedly breeding reptiles in large quantities to meet demand were found to likely have been taking them from the wild instead.

This kind of laundering is difficult to control unless there are robust practices in place to trace reptiles all the way from source to final purchase.

Captive breeding in the reptile trade also has horrible consequences for animal welfare. As colleagues and I have argued, the reptile leather industry is extraordinarily cruel. Animals are often kept in unhygienic conditions and slaughter is usually done while the reptile is conscious. That means many animals are skinned while still alive.

The pet industry is little better. Reptiles are crammed into small boxes and flown as cargo all over the world, enduring days without food and water and in fluctuating temperatures. There is no guarantee that they will be better kept once they arrive at their new home.

The biggest demand for pet reptiles is in Europe and North America. This is an important and often overlooked point: advertising the harm that the exotic pet trade causes could help reduce demand where it is greatest.

The new research illuminates some of the areas where our understanding is most limited. We known that many reptiles are sold as ingredients in medicines for example, but we know almost nothing about the scale of this trade.

This requires investigation, as does the role of social media – including Facebook and WhatsApp – in supporting the buying and selling of reptiles and other wildlife.

The new study also raises an alternative to the way the wildlife trade is currently regulated. What if no trade was the default starting point?

Trade would only take place if there was sufficient evidence to show that it would not harm the survival of the species. This precautionary approach would address the lack of data for many species and also potentially simplify customs checks.

It’s time to rethink how this trade is regulated, and our relationship to wildlife altogether.

This past weekend my husband and I were out walking the pups when we saw a kitten sitting behind a nursing home.

I walked down to see if it had tags so that I could get it back home, but there were no tags.

I was telling my friend that I had brought her into the vet where they gave me a free dose of Frontline to take care of any fleas.

I then asked if she wanted me to go back and grab more for her, but she declined, saying they always got their flea preventatives online because it is both cheaper and more convenient than running to the vet.

Like I said, I have always gotten my flea medication from my vet.

The major downside to ordering through this site is that it’s isn’t as easy and straightforward as many of the other sites listed here.

On a personal note, I will say that my shopping experiences with Chewy have always been pleasant.

Plus, when I’ve requested to do a return, they have been accommodating and asked I donate the product to a local shelter instead of sending it back.

Regarding Chewy and medication, I am happy to report they are associated with a licensed pharmacy.

After comparing pricing with other online companies and my vet, I can confidently state they have the best pricing available on most medicine, especially on Bayer’s Seresto collar.

The first thing I will say after completing my research is that I am absolutely blown away by the large variety of flea medications on the market.

“Wan” is Japanese for “woof,” so is this collar only effective against Japanese fleas?

I was familiar with several of the brands, but to be honest, the majority of the brands were new to me.

My first recommendation when shopping online for flea medications, whether it is over the counter or prescription, is to be sure that you find a reputable online store.

In my research, I was disturbed by the comments I found regarding those who exercised less caution, and their pups paid the price.

Overall, I think Chewy.com offers the most competitive pricing for pet medications, especially with auto-ship.

However, as you can see above, I did note three common flea medications and who had the best pricing for each.

The drawback of ordering medicine online is that there are two delays.

The first delay would be for the prescription to be verified, and the second would be for the shipping.

Neither delays would be something you would deal with when picking up flea medication from your vet. 

Conclusion

Having three dogs is expensive, and I am all for saving money, but not at the expense of my dogs’ health.

However, after researching online shopping, I found that I could save over $100 a year on flea preventative and almost $900 a year on all other medications by buying their medication online!

My final thought is that it is well worth the time to shop around for flea medications.

7. What packs do you wish you had in your game? I have all the packs I wanted to buy. What I DO wish the game had was more unique and original kinds of packs, like WA, ITF & SN. Looking at the direction The Sims has been going since TS4, I think the game as a concept is getting incredibly dull -- it’s always the same thing, series after series: dates, celebrities, parties, woohoo -- over and effing over again.

Where are the creative hobbies and skills? “Creative” as in things sims can CREATE -- actually putting all those collectibles/harvestables to good use to craft things like knitting/embroiderers/weaving (at a loom or spinning wheel would be great -- to tie in with shearing FARM ANIMALS), or carpenters/lumberjacks (I’m so jealous TS4 got flower arranging, I really wanted that in TS3 for gardeners), or blacksmiths or cobblers or something.
