Yesterday (Wren Day/Lá an Dreoilín ) I walked the bounds with the wren I use symbolically on my altar and an amulet bag I made that holds my found Carolina wren feathers. I started at the creek—a personal sacred space—where I made an offering of wassail. We then visited many of the trees that are sacred to me.
My partner purchased the wren from CamilleDesigns on Etsy.com
*no wrens were harmed

(removing this from my drafts since I forgot to post it but it still applies lol)
hello people who hopefully don’t have social anxiety, do you live in Hanover, Pennsylvania? Do you have a car or someone who can drive you? Would you like to help an endangered species?
The houses-converted into appartments on 21 Pine street has a backyard with a fully grown butternut (juglans cinera) tree in it, and the fruit should have started falling by now, August 25th, 2021!
Butternuts are an endangered species of walnuts, similar to black walnuts, but the trees have silver bark instead of black/brown, the husk of the fruit is smooth and fuzzy, and the nuts themselves are shaped like spiky footballs! They are edible for humans as well as people, but I don’t know what they taste like because I’ve prioritized planting them than eating them!
I moved out of that appartment and we moved all the way to Georgia, so I can’t collect the seeds this year :(
But if you like gardening, or just want to help an endangered species, and aren’t afraid to knock on someone’s door, you can ask literally anyone in this appartment if you can go in the yard and collect the seeds and they’ll probably say yes! They’ll probably thank you because it means they don’t have to rake them up!
Because I was the only one there who cared! At all!
You can collect the seeds, and plant them directly into the ground or into a container, and you don’t have to take the husk off either! The husk actually helps the seedlings retain moisture, apparently!
The husk won’t stain your hands as long as it isn’t opened, but they are a tiny bit sticky, so you don’t really need gloves to collect them!
if I had money I would literally pay you to do this, but I’m unemployed and no one is hiring and yeah.
Please. At some point in the future I will 100% sincerely pay you $100 if you go to this place and ask if you can collect the seeds from the tree. Then you can either plant them in the ground in wild areas where other trees are growing, or plant them on your property if you own it  I’m not joking.

The native range of butternut trees ranges from all of northeastern United States and into southeastern Canada. The tree was once highly valued for its rich, sweet, and buttery flavored nuts and its light, golden wood. Butternut trees can be planted in spring or fall and usually show yellowish-green flowers in late spring. The flowers are replaced by fruits which then ripen into nuts in the fall. The trees can grow to be 40 to 60 feet tall and wide (12 to 18 meters) but grow quite slowly with less than 12 inches added to their height per year. It’s better to plant butternut trees away from other plants. They emit juglones, chemicals toxic to other plants, into the soil that can either kill them or stunt their growth.

The white one is Mj she is a partial imprinted Racing Homer and is Loki's Wife
The black one next to Mj is Loki and he is a human imprinted feral
The smaller black one is Emilio and he is a pure bred Portuguese tumbler
And the one who gives off the most frat bro vibes is Fluffernutter there at the end. Fluffernutter is a companion bred mutt of different breeds but is mostly Classic Old Frill here is a simplified family tree below. Fluffernutter is "bonded" to me meaning he sees me as his mate.

Christmas week and we are on a warming trend with lows in the 50s & highs in the 60s with off and on light rain. Looks like we'll have at least seven days without danger of frost so I uncovered the garden so the cool season vegetables could get some direct sunlight & rain:

I’ve been thinking a lot about old trees. In my backyard here in Catskill, there is the stump of an old butternut tree. I have yet to measure it, but it must be at least 5-6 feet in diameter. It is old and rotten. Years of mowing has shaved it down to its roots. Today it is covered in mugwort, mushrooms and mosses. For hundreds of years it must’ve been growing in that spot. I never saw it standing. I always wish I had.
Recently, a significant tree to many people in the area was cut down due to rot. It was beautiful. I passed it every day. It was obviously much older than the sidewalks that it refused to cooperate with. What intrigued me the most was that after it was cut down, I heard a flood of stories about this tree. It seemed to have significance to everyone I met.
I wonder how many stories there are about the tree that was once in my backyard. I wonder who keeps these stories. I wonder what my house looked like when it was still in the shade of this massive tree. I wonder about the tree before my house was beneath it. I wonder who was the last to harvest and roast the butternuts.

I mean, she's technically half tree but she didn't even KNOW she was half tree until the events of the book. She's completely uninformed about tree culture. Honestly, this just feels like bad tree representation the author just threw in there in for woke points
Raven Cycle series, I love you. I adore you. But what do you mean Blue is half tree?

128 Grazer with cubs, ( The Nuts) 2016
someone had posted this video to the bear chat friday on explore.org. I thought some of my followers might be interested in seeing Gully 903 as a cub back in 2016. Gully was the largest blonde cub. his siblings were all nicknamed after nuts. Gully was known as Butternut in those days. his darker brother was Walnut and Gully’s little sister was Peanut. Some folks call her fifi now. she was a little cutie. I would love to see her again. She was last seen in 2022. Peanut is bear 902. There is a lot of speculation of exactly who Walnut grew up to be. some people think he is Bucky 164 ( but I don’t ).  Some people think Walnut is bear 97.  It is often confusing to people when sub adults show up at brooks falls in the spring by themselves as to their identity.  When bears receive their numbers it is after being observed 3 times ( on their own ) by the rangers. So often because a sub adult changes his/her looks so much from a cub it becomes really hard to identify for sure. I mean for people lol. The bears certainly know their own brothers and sisters as adults and there is lots of evidence of that. Maybe folks think Bucky is Walnut because he was so often seen playing with Gully when they were both sub adults and they are still friends today. Idk but I don’t think Bucky resembles Grazer very much.  Anyways, as far as I know Gully is the only one of his siblings that comes back to brooks falls every spring and stays all summer. I mean his siblings from this litter in 2016. Gully’s other sisters  428 and 429 born in 2020 ( The Grazerettes ) both come back every year. I will look and post a pic of Gully from this year. He was a cute little guy then and a beautiful bear now. It is also interesting to see how big the island just below the falls was and how much grass it had then. It is basically just a little sandbar now. I remember when it even had a tree and Otis used to like to sleep under it. ~ johnny

Spotted these white walnuts (butternuts) on our morning walk. I’ve foraged these in the past to use in baking and natural dying and ink making.

yepppp it's my baby :D now I have to find her older sister...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two photos.
The first is in fall, showing a young butternut tree in a blue bucket, sitting in a red cart, with one leaflet still hanging on. The young tree has two stems emerging from its base, one mostly straight, and a smaller one that curves to the side.
The second is in early spring, now with the tree planted in the ground, surrounded by dried grasses and leaves, its branches bare, but in the same shape as the first photo, with one almost straight stem, and a shorter curved one.
End ID.]
Well now that I know where she is, she needs a name. She's turning either 2 or 3 in April. Her older sister will be turning either 3 or 4. They'd be bigger if they'd been in the ground this whole time, but we've been in apartments both times, which is why I donated these two to the collage when I saw they'd planted black walnut seedlings and realized they might accept donations for a good cause, considering Butternut trees are critically endangered!
if you live in Hanover, Pennsylvania, pleassssssse consider going to 21 Pine street to bug the people who live there to see if you can collect seeds from the tree in the yard in August. They will probably thank you because it means they won't have to rake them up.

Butternut Trees (Juglans cinerea)
While butternut trees are some of the hardiest nut trees, they are becoming more rare in the wild and aren’t frequently found in nurseries. This is because the tree is susceptible to butternut canker, a deadly fungal disease. In some states, butternut canker killed up to 80% of butternut trees. There is no cure for this disease and affected trees typically die after a few years. Hybrid butternut trees usually have better resistance against butternut canker.
The fruit husks of the tree can be used to make yellow or orange dye. Some substances from the inner bark of the roots are used in medicines. The original butternut tree George Washington Bush brought over during his trip along the Oregon Trail is thought to be the oldest butternut tree in the United States at more than 170 years old.

Cool Open Access Paper Alert!
Skarù·ręʔ (Tuscarora) food forest restoration project, primarily focused on nut-producing trees and food sovereignty. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy's practice of three sisters corn-bean-squash is well known, but less talked about are the nuts. Traditions past and present include oak acorns, walnuts, hickory, butternuts, and new chestnuts. This paper talks about the project, how they engaged with the Skarù·rę community, and hopes for the future.
