Manager!Seijoh
a/n: im a seijoh stan and theyre my little plant babies
for more seijoh content, check this masterlist out!
this is so long oml i hate myself
theyre an actual boy band istg
lets be honest, they probably thought you were just another oikawa fangirl
they thought you just wanted to be closer to their captain bc you were another delusional girl who wanted to live out her fantasies
lmao im not trying to be salty
but when you just stared blankly at oikawa tooru after he called you a beautiful flower,
stageplay hinata calling you a mugwort
the team just about threw themselves on your feet
tbh you werent really there to get a boyfriend or for oikawa
you just needed an after school club and the other teams already had managers
the only sport that didnt was the boys volleyball team
imagine why
you were actually a little wary, since you knew of oikawa, being a first year yourself, and you were aware of his psycho fangirls who could probably kill you
but you needed a club that would last you for the next 3 years to graduate
it was kunimi who actually recommended being a manager
you were in his class and you noticed him sleeping in the morning so you gave him your energy bar
âthanksâ
you shrugged and smiled
thats why he tolerated you more than others
you were nice and you were the only one who noticed his tiredness, even the teacher left him alone, and did something about it
sometimes, you even gave him an energy drink
âcan you tell me why youve been so tired lately? i dont think ive seen you wake up until lunchâ
he opened the snack and started munching while replying
âearly morning practice for volleyball is still a big adjustment. our captain demands us to be there 6 in the morning sharp and if weâre even a minute late, weâd have to run laps. like for every minute youre late, you have to run those amountâ
oh my why is kunimi talking so much
but i love kunimi and first year seijoh boys rights in this household is valid
you furrowed your eyebrows
âbut yall are still growing and you need all your sleep. if i were there, id yell at your captainâ
he grinned slightly, imagining your short height beating up their captain
âmeh. you want to be our manager? i saw you looking at the clubs board yesterday and we dont have one so you could take the opportunity and beat him up thenâ
ofc you agreed bc kunimi was best boi and you just wanted him to have enough sleep for once
after class, he waited for you to finish packing up and when you finished, yall left the classroom
until another guy with a spiky hairstyle joined you and you noticed him as the guy who sometimes came over to eat lunch with kunimi
âoh, hello l/n-sanâ
you smiled gently
âdrop the formalities, kindaichi-kun. its only fair.â
he nodded before walking beside kunimi
âkindaichi, l/n might be our new managerâ
the onion head excitedly looked at you
âreally?! yes! so we dont have to fill our bottles ourselves anymore!â
kunimi glared at him and slapped his stomach
âshes our manager, not our maidâ
you laughed but placed an arm on him
âits okay. i was a manager for my middle school volleyball team so i know a little bit about being oneâ
the two shared a look
god, they really hit the jackpot
as yall walked closer to the gym, you noticed the big pile of girls huddling at the corner
kunimi sighed
âl/n, ill warn you ahead of time of our captain. hes kinda,,,, too muchâ
but you flashed him a smile
âhes not the first one ive handledâ
oml player-chan!!!
so when you opened the door and entered the gym and oikawa hit you with his normal antics, you just stared at him
âokay and?â
hanamaki and mattsun howled before rushing to you and grabbing you in a hug
âgirls like her really exist!!â
you gave kunimi and kindaichi a signal of help and they nodded before gently prying the senpais off of you
âsenpai, pleaseâ
you gave kunimi a grateful nod
coach irihata went up to you bc wow, kunimi has a friend with of another gender?
âhow can we help you, miss?â
âim l/n y/n, first year, and id like to apply as the managerâ
internally, the coach sighed bc you werent the first one to apply
the reason they havent had a manager for years was bc of oikawaâs fangirls hiding themselves under that false facade
but he saw you brush off that comment oikawa make with no hint of fluster or blush on your face so he decides to give you a trial run, in guise of seeing if you could handle these chaotic boys
âdo you have any experience as manager? or do we need to teach you the ropes?â
âi was a manager for 3 years in my middle school volleyballâ
he nodded
âill give you one month. a trial run of a month to test the watersâ
you agreed and your trial run began
kunimi mentioned that morning practice starts at 6 am sharp so you set your alarm for 5 to get ready and get to school on time before the boys
you remembered how to set up the nets so you quickly put them out (using a step stool bc we short) and ran to get the basket of balls
their water bottles were filled and you were in the middle of lugging the big basket of towels when the third years entered
the 4 of them usually came earlier than the rest so they saw you dragging the basket of fresh towels and wipe your sweat before smiling at the work youve done
iwa was so happy bc it was usually him who did this stuff and now that he had someone do it for him, it was like a god-send
oikawaâs eyes shone and he waved at you
âyohoo, y/n-chan!â
you cringed at the loud voice of the famous oikawa tooru
âhello, oikawa-sanâ
he chuckled at your politeness before hugging you
âyou did all this for us? youre so cute, y/n-chan!â
instead of the normal blush and love-struck eyes, you were actually very uncomfortable of the sudden skinship and you quickly ran to the side when iwa hit him at the head
âshittykawa! leave her alone!â
âiwa-chan!â
makki and mattsun stood next to you as the boys did their usual fight
âis this all an act or are you really not attracted to oikawa?â
mattsun shot him a surprised look bc why was he so straightforward
but you just shrugged
âhes cute, i admit. but ive seen much cuter and the boys in my middle school team was basically full of him so,,, and i hate guys who think theyre all that just bc theyre blessed w a pretty face. if anything, ill probably go for iwaizumi-sanâ
pop off S I S T E R!!!
you just won the heart of these two
slowly but surely, they all came to accept you and iwa straight out loves you bc you maintained this routine for the whole month of your trial run
and you still remained indifferent of oikawaâs advances and he was even impressed and slightly agitated that you werent paying attention to him
ây/n-chan, one date! just one!â
you huffed before looking up from your clipboard
âi like men, oikawa-san. not boysâ
that comment made the guys shriek
ây/n-chan! youre just a first year! you dont need a man!â
âyoure not a man, oikawa!â
you left oikawa to be tormented by his teammates and went to go and hand over the report to the coach
he was impressed by the notes you made bc they were ones he even missed
like the split-second of hesitation that kindaichi usually has that goes unnoticed but you immediately saw
or the wince oikawa has whenever he so much as jumps an inch
you could even tell the difference between iwaâs spike and if he was being easy or he was going full-out
this added on to the fact that the boys loved you and irihata actually saw kunimi try moreÂ
but he thinks its only to earn your praises
ây/n, youre officially the team managerâ
yall celebrated at the normal hang-out spot which was the ramen shop and it truly shocked you at how much these boys ate
granted, this was the first time you ate together but you didnt expect them to eat nearly 5 bowls each
you could only finish 2 and you already feel like throwing up
âhonestly, how do you guys not gain weight after this?â
the table you sat at, iwa, kindaichi, mattsun, and kunimi, looked at you and shrugged
âi work outâ
âi runâ
âi fastâ
âi poop it outâ
lmao im sorry i cackled too hard at this
you stared blankly at mattsunâs answer who said it so seriously that you snorted a laugh
they watched you and your laughter bc you havent really expressed yourself as muchÂ
so they made it their goal to see you laugh more
ây/n-chan! you need to eat more!â
oikawa shouted, clearly food drunk, but you shook your head aggressively
âi only planned to eat one bowl but he just had to shove another down my throatâ
âbut you need to grow, y/n-chan!â
âi want to grow taller! not wider!!â
As a manager:
oh boy
you basically grew into kinda their mom
âoikawa-san! you need to rest your knee or youre going to hurt yourself! i will drag you home myself!â
âkunimi, if you try to get this one more spike, iâll buy you a bag of those caramel bites you likeâ
âiwa-san! if you hit oikawa-san too much, youll destroy the little braincells he has!â
âyahaba-san, nice dump!â
âis your knee okay, watari-san?â
yall really forget that watari and yahaba exist sometimes smh
it was part of the work
keeping up with seijoh
so to keep them encouraged, you gave them praises that they always demand for and they always turn to you whenever they did something good
mattsun gives you a look whenever he blocks iwaâs spikes and you give kindaichi a head pat whenever he blocks some too
bc of how you are with them, sometimes, they forget that you are actually just a first year
they get shocked whenever you walk in with kunimi and kindaichi and talk about the current homework bc it slips their mind that their hard-working manager was actually just a 15-year-old girl
so, they try to ease the burden whenever they can
like iwa offering to help you whenever you have to take their jerseys to the laundrymat
or offering to help you with your assignments since theyve only been through it once
more like watari, yahaba, and iwa bc the matsuhana are clueless and acts like they completely skipped that grade
also
!!!!
oikawaâs fangirls ltr dont leave you alone!!!
now, its known that youre the manager of the volleyball team bc oikawa has boasted about your efforts and such
this obvs ticked off a bunch of girls bc they were jealous that you got to spend more time in a single practice with their precious oikawa-senpai than they have their entire lives
more than once theyve cornered you to threaten you to stay away from their senpai or youll have something coming for you
you never take them seriously bc you can fight too and you just give them a look and push them away
but this one time
TRIGGER WARNING-START
okay tea
the self-proclaimed president of the oikawa tooru fanclub, kenta miyo, cornered you at the bathroom with her other minions
you were just washing your hands and drying them off when she marched up to you and grabbed your hair before tugging it back
obviously you were surprised and shouted
âoi! what the hell?!â
âyou slut! you need to stay away from my tooru, got it?!â
ehm what
you hissed and wrenched her arm from your hair and pushed her away
your hair was now a mess and you were fuming, already sick and tired of the torture these girls put you through
âhe belongs to himself, not you! so stop being delusional and leave me alone already!â
she signalled for the girls to hold on to you which you slapped away but they forcefully grabbed your arm while you kicked at them and struggle to get out of their hold
jesus what do these girls eat
miyo watches you struggle with a smile and cackles
âoh? no fight anymore, little kouhai?â
you glared at her
âi dont want to beat yall up bc id get yelled at by tooru so you need to let me go or regret itâ
at the mention of his first name, her eyes widened and her face twisted and she slapped you
âoi! respect your senpai, you brat! dont you ever say oikawaâs first name!â
your lips curled
âoh? thats funny, because he actually told me to call him that since he wants his cute little manager to be very comfortable with himâ
you achieved a feat that she has been working to get her entire high school life and miyo was not happy
âive been with him for 3 years and you just suddenly show up out of nowhere and call him that?! i dont think so!â
she had her hands around your neck and you gripped her arms, making her wince
but you laughed at that comment
âheh, thats pathetic, isnât it? here you are, my senpai, who has been vying for his attention for 3 years only to be ignored yet a mere first year, who shows up out of nowhere, has been asked to a date nearly a million times every day. that must be toughâ
she shrieked at that comment and threw you on the floor, making you accidentally hit your head at the edge of the sink
yall im actually so bothered by this scene and im wincing as im typing
you bit your lip to prevent any sound of pain to escape bc you knew thats what she wanted to hear from you
but you werent going to give her the satisfaction
instead, you looked up at her, hatred swirling in your eyes
âyoure freaking psycho, you know that? once tooru and hajime knows about this, theyre going to give you hell. they wont ever let this go bc im the manager of their prized team and their little baby sister. so go ahead, do what you want with me. bc i paid too much for these nails to be tainted by dirt like youâ
saiyo, a girl you noticed to be watariâs classmate when you went and visited him, nervously tugged on miyoâs jacket
âmiyo, we should go-â
âSHES BLUFFING. AND HERE, SINCE YOUR SOCCERFIELD FOREHEAD IS BLEEDING, LET ME HELP WASH IT OUTâ
and she poured over a carton of banana milk over you, making you wince at the sticky and cold liquid
the tough facade was crumbling and you were now screaming for help in your head, hoping that stupid theory from yahaba about team telepathy to work
but it didnt
TRIGGER WARNING-END
when miyo and her girls left, you sat on the floor, soaked and sticky and bleeding
then you begin to cry angry tears
you were angry that you were being treated like this just bc you were a manager
you were angry that you let them do that to you
you were angry that you prized your nails more than punching her square in the nose
you were just angry
periodt
staggering on your own feet, you stood up and leaned on the sink, eyes widening at the dripping red liquid from the gash on your forehead, staining the porcelain sink
you were stupid and unconsciously touched it making you winceÂ
âshit, that hurtsâ
you whined quietly
there was little you can do with toilet paper and water to clean yourself up but you managed to at least stop the bleeding
you knew you had to be put on concussion protocol just in case bc you that hit was quite hard but at the moment, that wasnt your concern
practice has already started and this was the first time you werent present for daily practice
this was confirmed at the constant buzzing of your phone in your skirt pocket which you didnt listen to and instead, started thinking of ways to go to your locker and get your stuff and fake being sick but at the same time, not be seen and relayed to the team
time was ticking and you had to come up with a plan fast before oikawa will send the team to come looking around the building for you
once you looked at your reflection and smiled big, you decided it was enough to not show the pain you were in right now
girl im hurting for you
you peeked out of the bathroom door and saw the coast was clear so you quickly ran to your classroom, which was thankfully empty, and quickly grabbed your things
but as you were packing up, the tears just kept falling
it didnt stop as you bolted down the stairs, using your cardigan to hide your face from the public
once you were safely out of school grounds, you finally took out your phone and reviewed through all the worried and concerned texts from the team group chat
but you just replied, âim fine but i just feel really sick right now. girl stuffâ
you smirked, knowing that would keep the boys away
but oikawa had to go and ask you to call him
ây/n-chan! do you want oikawa-senpai to come over with chocolates and ice cream?! wings or no wings?!â
your jaw dropped at the question and clearly scandalized by the question
the team was too as shouting began and you could faintly hear iwa scream, âoh my god, shittykawa!â
âim seriously okay, oikawa-san. i just need to be alone right now and ill try and get some sleep. good byeâ
then you hung up
there was no way you could tell them
they were in their last year anyways so doing something about it wouldnt matter
and you were strongÂ
but apparently not strong enough to fight them off though
you would cover the wound with concealer and continue on with practice tomorrow as if everything was normal
but there was only so much you could take
just yesterday, they trashed your locker and a week ago, they took your bento and threw it away
you even got into a fight with this one girl but she scampered away, too scared to do anything alone
so you were actually just tired and want everyone to leave you alone
believe me, youve thought of quitting sometimes
but youve actually created a bond with these boys
like when you take hanamaki to get cream puffs whenever he loses against iwa in arm wrestling
or when yahaba calls you at ungodly hours to express his worries for next year and to fill oikawaâs shoes
it was simple moments that you shared with each player that kept you from not leaving
soon, you found yourself crying again and the looks pedestrians were giving you was starting to make you uncomfortable
a girl, with her gross hair in a bun, puffy eyes with a bleeding wound and walking down the street
that was a sight
so you cut a corner to an alley by your house to escape from the judging eyes and you were too busy wiping your eyes to see a boy who was crouched down on the floor and ended up walking over him
omg my baby kyoken hello luv!!!!
you gasped and you were surprised and quickly apologized
kyotani was originally about to yell at you, no matter what, but he saw the state you were in and concluded you were either from a fight or was beaten up
he recognized that and decided to just glare at you and go back to feeding the stray dogs and cats
you breathed a sigh in relief when he didnt yell at you bc that wouldve been the last thing you needed today
âsir, im sorry for hitting you. if there is something i could do for you, dont hesitateâ
he ignored you and you focused on him paying attention to the strays
going into your backpack, you had a milk carton and a sausage stick from earlier
you used your thermos lid to serve as the milk bowl for the cats while you peeled open the meat and used your scissors to cut chunks of it for the dogs to have some
kyotani watched as you went into action to feeding the animals that people usually ignored
he knew you
well, he recognized you
when he watched from the top of the gym, he saw you as their manager who ran around and helped everyone
sure, he still didnt trust youÂ
but he watched you grin and smile as the animals started to eat
âim in a hurry right now so i have to go but ill feed you again tomorrow, okay? you too, stranger-san. ill bring food for you tooâ
then you stood up and ran away, probably in a hurry to fix that wound
he wouldve offered to treat it for you but he remained silent, watching the cats mewl at the now empty lid
the next day, oikawa was worried for you and when he saw you at early morning practice, he practically glomped to your side
ây/n-chan! you okay?! oikawa-senpai was so worried for you!â
you cringed but nodded
âim okay, oikawa-sanâ
âsenpai, y/n-chan! call me senpai!â
âim not going to feed into your kink, oikawa-sanâ
*cue everyone busting a lung*
to this day, no one still knew what happened to you
you kept it quiet and you were sure you got everything handled
except for one person
kyotani was smart and for some reason he knew you got beat up by the fangirls and the perpetrators were easily found bc he saw them huddled around your locker, probably trashing it again, and lets just say,Â
no one is def going to mess w you now
back to manager moments!!
during practice matches, the boys rally around you to prevent other teams from sweet-talking you
they make sure no one gets past them and always have excuses to get your attention
you knew what they were doing but you pretended not to, heart warming at their protectiveness and hunger for your attention
even though you have your own jacket, the team gives you theirs all the time like oikawa has his special team jacket w his name at the back and when he feels threatened by schools like johzenji, he makes you wear it
âyoure mine, y/n-chan and i want that blondie to knowâ
âehm, no, oikawa-san. im iwaizumi-sanâsâ
oikawa screamed
lmao training camps w them is CHAOTIC
YOU WANT TO CRYYYYYY
OIKAWA IS CRYING BC IWAIZUMI IS BEATING HIM UP, MATSUHANA ARE FREAKING OUT THE FIRST YEARS ABOUT THE GHOSTS IN THE WOODS AND NOW KINDAICHI REFUSES TO LET GO OF YOU, WATARI GOT LOST GOING TO THE BATHROOM AND YAHABA IS SCREAMING ABOUT THE WEATHER MESSING UP HIS HAIR AND MAKING IT FRIZZY
reminder: threaten to quit everytime they get too much
your hugs are the best!!!!
you have a special hug for every player
oikawa gets his favorite which was the normal arm around the waist with your arms around his neck while he snuggles in your neck
iwa gets flustered easily so you hug him from behind so you cant see his flustered look
mattsun actually likes the jumping in the air so he catches you type of hug
makki is more tame and has his arms around your shoulder with his chin on your head
yahaba is the twirly kind where he just picks you up and swings you around
watari also gets flustered easily so he likes the one-arm hugs
kindaichi gets blushy at the slightest touch from you but he gives you a hug from behind you himself where he can bury his face in your hair while you caress his arms
kunimi, now he likes it when you squeeze him extremely tight bc it makes him feel loved and feel alive
kyo doesnt even talk to you what makes you think you can give him a hug
their lost for shiratorizawa really broke them though
you made them their own bentos for nearly a week to keep them encouraged and gave oikawa extra attention to keep him from sulking or practicing late
âoikawa-senpai, lets go watch that new movie laterâ
âS-S-SENPAI?!â
then the arrival of our baby kyoken
yahaba was moody the whole practice and you were currently trying to keep him from spiking a ball to someone
âeven just today, heâs lateâ
âwho?â
âthat stupid dogâ
he just keeps mumbling and grunting
and then the said dog arrived
you peaked out from behind iwaizumi, who protectively went in front of you
shock ran through you and you pointed at him
âpuppy-kun!â
lmao puppy what
youve called him that since he refused to tell you his name, but you call him that bc he paid special attention to this one baby beagle
he raised a hand in greeting and you gave him a smile
âyoure a player here, too?!â
he âglaredâ at you but nodded stiffly
the team really thought that he would lash out at you but he is surprisingly tolerant
the power of the manager
he still hasnt talked to you but he does respond to you and even helps you with chores, still not talking ofc
hes so tsun tsun and he deserves my heart yall
however, youve heard him talk to iwaizumi, and iwaizumi only, so youve heard his voice before
ngl, you were flustered by how gruff and deep it was
then their loss to karasuno
bruh, it was KARASUNO
the entire team fell apart and after the match, each of them ran away from you to stop lashing out
you were also on the verge of crying, seeing the broken look on your third years
your precious third years
you decided to give them their own space but you heard a loud banging sound from the bathroom
yahaba and watari were outside, clearly trying to talk to someone in there on coming out but it got louder
okay you were lowkey like, âhm, i should not be hereâ
but you recognized that voice
you knocked at the boys door to be respectful
âkyo-san? its me, y/nâ
he was silent but he did unlock it
you took this as a sign to enter and you gave yahaba and watari a smile
âiâll be fine. go to kindaichi and kunimi. they need your comfort right nowâ
tbh, you were surprised the bathroom was still intact but you saw the stall door at the very end being rattled and shaken
you remained by the door but you wanted to go to him
âkyo-san, please come out so i can treat your injuriesâ
he expected you to say those words like âits okayâ or âtheres always next yearâ but you didnt
instead, you knew he was hurt and wanted to help him
he continued to give a few punches to the wall and the door before emerging
you wordlessly treated the wounds and offered your hand
âim here, kyo-san. dont worry, im right hereâ
at the ramen shop, you told them to eat as much as they want and wordlessly gave them your card, slightly crying inside bc you know this was going to be like over a hundred dollars
but you were treating the boys bc they deserved it
you sat beside kindaichi, who was just sobbing and apologizing, so you were wiping his tears and holding his hand under the table
this precious babie
bruh i was sobbing when i watched this part like uuggghhhh
after dinner, you walked with the other third years, knowing they would go to the gym, so you gave everyone else your special hugs before sending them home
âtext me when you arrive safely, okay?â
âyes, momâ
âKINDAICHI WHATâ
oikawaâs speech made you cry bc despite only knowing them for not even a year, you already feel like a family
you didnt want your family to be broken but you knew they would all go their separate ways eventually
there was a big hug pile of third years on the side where you took a picture and sent it to the group chat
you had to eventually go home after helping them clean up and when you checked your phone, a fresh batch of tears rolled down
each from every person on the team but with the same sentence and same words
âwe love you, l/n y/n. thanks for everything.â
ngl i dont think this was that good and its like 8 in the morning and im extremely tired
i want to do karasuno, nekoma, and fukurodani but im so exhausted i cannot right now

A Failed Betrothal (6)
Here is a new chapter for you guys. I am terrible at writing feelings and this is my best shot.đ
Tell me what you think.
[Masterlist]
(PART 1)(PART 5)
-------
(Words in bold is French)
âTch, Drake is going to be busy trying to find Hawkmoth. He canât go around Paris, being Dupain-Chengâs boyfriend. Besides, he canât be a proper boyfriend even in his most lucid moments. I will be her boyfriend instead.â
Tim was glad he didnât take a sip of his coffee when Damian volunteered to be Marinetteâs boyfriend. But he still choked on air. Jason with his limited knowledge of french was confused. Damian didnât do what he heard, right?
âNo, you canât. Chloe already told them about Tim. If I come in with a different boyfriend, they would get suspicious. We can work on Hawkmoth while we go on those dates. Besides, I thought you donât like me. Thatâs not going to sell the image of a loving couple.â Marinette pointed out. (She also doesnât want to do this fake-date thing. Not because she likes Damian and she had always been a goner for green eyes and totally would be date him if it werenât for some stupid curse dictating her feelings for him and fake-dating him might get her catch feelings for him and she would get her heart broken when this is all over and she would stay single forever and be a lonely old lady with hamsters and cats for company.)
âActually, Mari-bug, I only told the class how romantic your boyfriend is. I never told them what he looked like. Just in case, Timothy couldnât make it. I have back-up favors to cash in.â Chloe explained.
Marinette didnât even know why she was surprised at that, this was Chloe after all.
âYou have more than one American boy around our age in your debt who you intend to be my boyfriend? Sounds like you, Queenie. So that also means that Damian doesnât have to do it if he doesnât want to.â
âMy offer still stands. I will be your âboyfriendâ before I have to go back. I will be more understanding than those other American boys when you have to rush out for an attack. That is to assume that they can come here or agree. In our initial meeting, I didnât like that weak girl act you put up. Recent events have made me realize that you are a much stronger person. (Careful Damian, that sounds like a compliment.) You are a decent partner to date.(Shit. Shit. Shit. That wasnât a compliment, right?)â
Damian couldnât see why Dupain-Cheng would refuse such a good deal. He supposed her feelings might be still hurt from his first impression of her. He would give her an apology when they are alone and away from his brothers who would make a big deal of it.
âFine. At least, the curse will at least make this fake couple thing more believable.â grumbled Marinette. The light pink blush on her face is not because he said she was someone he would date.
Oh right, the curse. He swore internally, it had possessed him to be Dupain-Chengâs boyfriend. He now would have to endure the hand-holding, kissing and staring into each otherâs eyes, and try to resist the curse which will be much harder now. Somehow, he didnât regret it a little bit. It sounds more bearable with him doing those things with her than her with Drake. This was just a mutual agreement to ward off her suitors and prove to her classmates that she was off the market.
Chloe clapped her hands,âIf we have everything sorted out, you can start being a good boyfriend by walking Marinette to school today. We want to be on time now.â
The others started packing up their stuff or finished what they were eating. Marinette was dragged out of the bakery by an impatient Damian. Chloe and Alix picked up what Marinette left behind and followed out. The rest soon left right after, leaving the two boys in the bakery.
âHey, Replacement, tell me if I am wrong but did Demon Spawn willingly ask a girl out?â Jason asked, stealing a croissant from Tim.
âTry making himself the perfect candidate to be her fake boyfriend out of many choices, including me, and get her to agree to it. Now he has to go on a few romantic dates with Marinette in order to ward off this really pushy guy in her class. Demon Spawn also has a crush on her and heâs in denial of it. We are not hallucinating either. Iâve checked.â Tim replied, sipping his coffee.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âDamian. Let go. Hey, Wayne, are you listening to me? Let me go. This is not how you treat your significant other. And you are not even going in the right direction.â Marinette all but yelled at him.
He released his grip on her. âMy apologies for manhandling you but I wanted to tell you this away from everybody else.â
âWhat?â She asked, crossing her arms and narrowing her eyes.
I- This is a little difficult to say for me,â Damian started. (Why were his palms sweaty? Itâs just an apology. He had done it before although it was mostly because Grayson told him what he did wrong and made him do it.) âBut I am sorry for calling you weak, pathetic and every other bad thing I have said about you when you have shown that you are anything but those. I was mad at myself for being caught and took it out on you.â
Her glare softened.
âApologies accepted. The school is this way.â She said with a smile and went towards the school. Damian walked by her side, his hands in his pockets.
Marinette looked at where his hands were, âIf we are going to do this fake dating thing, I suggest we hold hands.â
Damian grabbed her hand and continued walking in silence. Her hands were so small and fitted perfectly in his. Oh God, itâs the curse again. Turning him into a sap. Do not think about her hands. And the fact that she took down a man twice her size with them which was an amazing sight to watch.
âWhy are you so stiff? Loosen up a little. You are with the love of your life. Smile a little.â
Damian plastered on a fake smile, âHappy?â
âIt looks fake. Being a model he will be able to tell.â Marinette remarked, âAre you sure you want to do this? We can still go get Tim to be my boyfriend.â
âI can do this. Drake wouldnât be a better choice. It doesnât help that you are relentlessly nit-picking me. Or are you that bad of a girlfriend?â Damian couldnât help but sniped back. âMaybe thatâs why Chat Noir left you.â
He found himself back against the world and her elbow at his neck. (He would forever deny that he liked it.)
âLook here, Wayne. You know nothing about me and you shouldnât assume that you do. Chat Noir was revoked of his status as a hero for his behaviour. If you donât act the part properly, I am going to have my former partner, who has absolutely no sense of boundaries, harassing me in my civilian life and I have already dealt enough of his advances to last a lifetime. I have given you so many chances to get out of this which you refused and yet, you are half-assing it. So are you in this 100 percent or not? Because I am at the end of my patience right now.â
âThe boy who is obsessed with you is the former Chat Noir?â
âYes, I will explain about that later but whatâs your answer?â
âI will give it my best shot but I have never pretended to be in love.â
âWere you not taught in the League?â
âThere were seduction tactics shown to members when they were old enough and I left them when I was 10 but I am not sure if those skills can be applied here.â(Slamming your opponent against the wall wasnât one of them but she was doing a great job of it so far. No. No. No. He is not his father. This is different from whatever he has with Kyle.)
She released her hold on him and grabbed his hand, leading him towards her school.
âWell then, here are the basics. Everytime you look at me, just think of your favourite things to make your smile a little more genuine. Maybe call me by a pet name if you want. Keep your touch on me like you canât keep your hands off of me and act really reluctant when you have to let go. You will only keep them my shoulders, arms, hands and waist or I will break your hand. I will do the same. If you are going to have to kiss me, give me a warning.â He looked into her blue eyes and nodded.
âAlright.â
âOh. I almost forgot. In case they try to question our relationship. My favourite colour is red. My favourite song is âFearlessâ by Jagged Stone.(I love Taylor. Sue me) And we met online a few months ago. You came all the way to Paris to see me a month ago and asked me out. We will talk more that later. Oh, I also love designing and have dreams of being a famous fashion designer.-â
Marinette rambled on which Damian found a little endearing. He looked forward to knowing more about her. He added a few comments here or there about himself (because it was only fair.) and ways to improve their cover story about their relationship.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âWe are nearly at school. Letâs start the act, Romeo.â Marinette whispered at him and looked at him with a bright smile that brought a tiny smile to his face. Okay, maybe he liked Marinette a little bit but that doesnât mean heâs in love with her.
He moved her hand holding his to the crook of his elbow.
âIs this acceptable, my lady?â
She wrinkled her nose, (Adorable. No. Donât go there) âThis is fine. But can you not call me that? And princess too? I may have erased his memories as Chat Noir but it could be a trigger to bring them back.â
âUnderstandable. What about Malak?â
She blushed. Marinette had learned Arabic a while back and was very fluent in the language.
âItâs okay.â She said in a soft voice. She put her other hand on his bicep and leaned on his shoulder.
âYou donât look like a touchy-feely person so is this fine?â
âYes.â
âCool, let me tell you more about the atrocious lies that had passed her mouth.â
They walked into the school courtyard, arm-in-arm, for the entire school, especially Marinetteâs class, to see. The perfect picture of a loving couple. Marinetteâs blush from earlier was evident on her face, leaving no room for doubt about her new relationship status. (Many guys, gals and pals were upset over it.) As they both walked up the stairs, whispering and laughing about who knows what (gulliable and idiotic classmates they have to suffer learning with), two pairs of green eyes followed them.
In this case, the saying âgreen-eyed monstersâ was true. One was envious of the boy who held the girl he wanted in his arms and the other was envious of the attention the couple was receiving.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damian escorted Marinette to her class. He gave her a kiss on her cheek and said, loud enough for the class to hear, âBye, Malak. I will pick you up after school for our date.â
âB-bye, Damian.â
He took her hand, gave a kiss to the back of it and departed, leaving a very red-faced Marinette behind. The rest of the class parted the way as Damian walked past.
She rushed into her seat where Chloe sat beside it, grinning like a Cheshire Cat.
âSooooo, Mari-bug, how was your date? You two rushed out of there so quickly and left your stuff behind. So eager to spend time with your boyfriend, eh? You enjoyed it very much by the looks of it.â
âSorry about that, Chloe. Did you bring my bag and the cheese danishes?â Marinette tried to change the topic. And she also wanted to make sure a god of destruction doesnât go hungry and angsty during school. âYep, here you go,â Chloe said, handing Marinette her bag and a box of cheese-flavoured snacks for Plagg, âYour mom packed some for you.â
âMarinette. Where have you been the last two days? And you came back with a boy. I am honestly worried about your behaviour.â Lila played the concerned classmate wonderfully.
âYeah, Marinette. This is a new low, even for you.â Alya added.
Marinette readied herself to tell the cover story Damian and her worked out on the way here.
âLila, I appreciate your âconcernâ. But the last four days have been a little hard on me so excuse me if I am a little snappy today. You see, Damian disappeared and didnât return home after school on Friday. So when he didnât pick up for our weekly video call, I panicked and called his family and they told me what happened. They sent me a plane to get out of Paris so I canât get akumatized.â
âWas that why you were gone on Saturday?â Chloe asked, playing along although she already knew why Marinette wasnât in Paris the last four days.
âYeah. Sorry for not telling you guys. It was sorta last minute. Thankfully, he wasnât kidnapped actually. His biological mother picked him up but never told his father that she was taking him. I just came back last night. Dami followed me to make sure I am okay.â
âWhat a bunch of bullcrap.â Alya said, âI donât believe you.â
Oh. The irony... âAlya, I donât care if you do. My life is my own business. So keep your nosy nose out of it. Your opinions donât matter to me anymore, stranger.â Marinette internally was tired of this silly routine and wanted this to end already.
Alya wanted to pick a fight with her over the smallest things she did for the past months. She wondered why her former best friend hated her this much.
âLila told me that you were skipping school and you paid an actor to be your pretend boyfriend.â
Pretending to not hear what Alya said, Marinette turned towards Chloe, âHey, you never told me about how you met Tim. I canât believe that you two are friends.â
âWe met at one of those charity galas-â
âHey, we were talking to you.â Alya cut her off. To which Chloe glared at the ombre-haired girl.
âI thought our conversation was done. What else am I supposed to say?â
Marinette was frustrated and hid that fact well, showing any reaction would give the game away. If she had reacted, it would further fuel the fire of Alyaâs self-righteousness, making her believe that Marinette was somehow guilty of what Lila told her about. Lila managed to turn nearly the entire class against her by appealing to their âheroâ side and outbursts from Marinette and the others made them more sure of themselves of being in the right. It was so deep-rooted that nothing would sway them to logical reasoning. Maybe except Phase 2. Phase 1 was made a little easier when Talia kidnapped her and made her miss a few days of school.
Phase 2 was to not acknowledge the lies or just appear uninterested. It would illustrate the point that people donât have to listen to them if they donât want to. If possible, sow little seeds of doubt to the ones Lila had a looser grip on. The more people they can slowly get on their side, the better.
Alya was confused, usually Marinette would throw a âtemper tantrumâ about how she didnât do that and Lila lied.âI-, you should-, You should apologize to Lila.â
Marinette raised an eyebrow, âFor what this time?â
âFor saying that she was lying.â
âPray tell, when did in any of our conversations so far did I do that? I mean I donât like the fact that she just accused me with little evidence of paying my someone to be my boyfriend but I am not going to fight with anyone over it. Maybe I did do that, Maybe I didnât. Maybe there is a good reason I did those things. The thing is Lila should keep to her own business and I will keep to mine. And as should you. I know you are a reporter at heart but you should at the very least respect my privacy.â
Alya stayed silent, fuming. Everyone was looking at them now. She realized that the designer was right and if she pushed further, she would be the bad guy.
âI thought so. Now, go away. I have nothing else to say to you. Let Chloe finish her story of how she met Tim which you so rudely interrupted.â
âWhoâs Tim?â Lila asked, wanting to know more about Marinetteâs boyfriend to work on an angle to get him away from the ravenette.
âMari-Bugâs boyfriendâs older brother. Now, shoo peasants, we are talking. Anyways, Mommy took me to when I was younger so I could mingle with all the other rich kids and get connections. Timothy was there and back then, he was still with the Drakes...â
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lila and Alya returned to their seats, both were visibly upset although Lila was seething inside. When Marinette was not at school for the last two days, the Italian thought that it was the last she had seen of her. Today, she showed up with a handsome boy on her arm and by the looks of his clothes, rich too. If she manages to get âDamianâ to break up with that pest and date her instead, then she would have a rich, handsome boyfriend devoted to her and that brat would be so heart-broken that an akuma so powerful would be made that even Ladybug wonât be able to defeat. A two for one deal. Lila started planning (scheming) to take her boyfriend away.

pairing: Todoroki Shouto / Reader
length: 13,307 words / 5 chapters
summary: Shouto Todoroki had definitely only asked you out in order to ward off his horde of interested suitors. So why does he keep actually taking you out on suspiciously realistic dates?
tags: romance, reader-insert, fake dating, misunderstandings
warnings: aged up characters, eventual smut
Shouto Todoroki was standing outside your workroom.
This was unusual, as in the three years youâd both been attending UA, Todoroki had hardly been spotted anywhere near the support course rooms. Class H was typically avoided by anyone who didnât want your classmate Mei to catch wind of them -- and very few hero course students had proved willing to do so, once theyâd encountered her the first time.
Todoroki was one of the smart ones.
He looked incredibly out of place and yet almost comically festive in the doorway of the studio, his red and white mop of hair matching the horrible red and white heart banner someone had tacked above the entry for Valentineâs Day. He stopped midway through the door, eyes flicking over the other offensively bright decor, including several violently pink heart balloons and heinous red streamers that hung from the ceiling like sausages curing in a deli.
A ripple of interest went through the female segment of your classmates at his arrival, and despite yourself, you perked up too.
You didnât know much about him, but Shouto Todoroki had the most interesting quirk you had ever worked with. Youâd been paired for a project earlier this year where youâd helped develop an adjustment to his temperature jacket that used pattern recognition to help it anticipate changes in his quirk, in order to begin applying temperature controls sometimes even before heâd made the switch from hot to cold or vice versa.
You hadnât spoken much on topics outside the project, but on the subject of your work, Todoroki had proved himself smart as a whip, asking insightful and probing questions, and making sensible suggestions based on what he learned from you. Heâd been so keen on your ideas and so shockingly easy to work with that youâd lamented the projectâs end.
It had only lasted two weeks, unfortunately, wrapping up before youâd had the chance to really delve into his personality or the actual science behind his quirk, and youâd been dying for the opportunity to pair up again and really study him since.
Less importantly, Shouto Todoroki was also inarguably the most handsome boy in your year, maybe even at all of UA. He was tall, strapped with lean muscle, and equipped with a facial symmetry that was almost more deadly than his quirk. Even his scar did nothing to deter from his good looks, only adding a roughed up, roguish charm to his otherwise pretty features. The first few days of your project, youâd had to pinch yourself on the leg more than a few times in order to reroute your brain from his face to the actual jacket.
Youâd since put effort into ignoring his appearance, but you couldnât really help that your eyes were pulled to him like a magnet whenever he stepped into a room.
Like now.
Todorokiâs own grey and blue eyes scanned over the faces of your classmates, stopping when they landed on you.
âY/N,â he said in greeting, and you raised a bewildered hand. Several nearby girls shot you betrayed looks, like youâd been keeping an association with him secret. Youâd have shot yourself something of a questioning look, too, if you could have. What reason would Shouto Todoroki have to seek you out outside of class? It had been almost a month since the project together. What might he want with you now?
âHi, Todoroki,â you said, wondering if youâd awoken in some parallel dimension where he thought you were friends. âUh, what brings you here?â
âI have a personal request,â he said in his low, soft tone, stepping into the room and making his way over to your worktable. Heâd shed the grey blazer of the school uniform for the crisp white dress shirt and tie, and he looked unbearably good. As he drew closer, you could see the way his broad shoulders stretched the fabric of his shirt.
You self-consciously pushed around the messy wires and metal framing on your worktop, trying to clear space.
A personal request. Had he come for some kind of support item? Your mind suddenly ran with possibilities, and a thrill went through you at the potential to study half hot half cold in earnest. This was the kind of extracurricular project youâd been dreaming of, maybe even something that you could scope out and build as your submission for your senior project next month!
âSure,â you said, gesturing to the other stool at your worktop and rifling around in your bag for a pen and paper. Youâd probably need to take notes.
Todoroki stared at you. âAh, not that kind of a request,â he said, eyeing your pen and paper.
Your cheer dropped. Oh.
âI had hoped to ask you in private, actually,â he said, something like discomfort flashing across his handsome features. He looked almost nervous, and you wondered wildly what kind of support request would make one of UAâs big three this awkward. Was he having a problem with his quirk that he didnât want to cop to?
âOkay,â you said, looking up at him, âlead the way.â
A cool hand came up to grasp your wrist, tugging you out of your chair. Your face burned at the casual touch, and you felt the curious eyes of your classmates on you as you were led from the room.
Todoroki steered you through the hall and around the corner to a small alcove out of the way of student traffic. The alcove had clearly had the same treatment as your workrooms, festooned with a banner boasting a bizarre pattern of tiny All Might silhouettes interspersed with hearts. Your eyes felt like they might catch fire if you looked at it for too long.
âHow have you been since the project?â you asked Todoroki, in the interest of being companionable. âIs everything on your vest still working well?â
A smile touched the corner of his mouth as he turned to face you. âItâs incredible. It still surprises me that it can predict what Iâm going to do before I even think to do it.â
You flushed at the praise. âIâm glad. It was really cool work on. Your quirk is awesome - normally there are only so many variables with pattern prediction like that but the two sides of your quirk increased the possibilities exponentially, so the algorithm was hard to code. I had to get a little extra help from an actual computer scientist,â you admitted, before slapping a hand over your mouth, realizing you were rambling.
His smile widened and your traitorous eyes caught on his mouth. âYou sound exactly as you did the last time we talked.â
You winced. âYeah, sorry.â
His eyes widened and the hand on your wrist tightened. âNo, I didnât mean--itâs nice,â he said. His fingers seemed to grow the tiniest bit colder where he held you. âI would have liked to have worked with you longer.â
You tamped down on another blush, looking away. âYeah. Itâs too bad.â
Just then, footsteps sounded in the hall, and Himari Honda came wheeling around the corner.
Himari was another student youâd been paired with for a project at one time, and she hadnât worked nearly as well with you as Todoroki had. A general course student with a quirk that let her track anyone within up to a mile of her person, Himariâs goal after graduation was to become an actress, with a particular focus on playing the love interest of powerful hero characters. She was certainly pretty enough, with large eyes, high cheekbones, and shiny pink hair that she wore in a long plait down her back, but thatâs where her appeal ended. She wasnât horrible, but she was a little too self-interested and it had certainly shown in how sheâd handled your pair project.
Himari smiled winningly at Todoroki, and it became clear to you that sheâd tracked him with her quirk. You knew instantly why sheâd come to find him, today of all days.
âHi, Shouto,â she purred. His fingers tightened where he still held your wrist.
âHello,â he said politely.
You stifled a laugh at the carefully blank look heâd suddenly adopted. You guessed heâd been fending off advances of this type all day -- youâd caught sight of his shoe cubby when youâd changed into your own uniform shoes this morning, absolutely bursting with chocolate and brightly-colored valentine's notes. He was too handsome for his own good, it appeared. Still, it was interesting that Todoroki seemed not the slightest bit interested in what someone who looked like Himari had to say.
âMaybe I should go,â you said, tugging your wrist back, but Todoroki gripped you tighter.
âI still need to talk to you,â he said. He fixed you with an intense look like he could pin you in place with his gaze.
Himari seemed to ignore you. âShouto, I was hoping to talk to you alone.â
âIâm a little occupied at the minute,â he said, gesturing to you. You gave a little wave.
Himari shot you a betrayed look like youâd beaten her to the punch, then puffed up like she was drawing up her courage. âDonât accept her confession! Accept mine! I like you -- please go out with me!â
Your jaw dropped. Youâd definitely not been in the middle of asking Todoroki out, but damn it took balls to cut another woman off like that. You couldnât tell if you respected her or hated her for her shamelessness.
Todoroki shifted uncomfortably next to you. âAh, Iâm sorry,â he said softly. âI canât accept your feelings. You see, I was just about to ask Y/N out.â
Your mind went blank.
He what now? Is that why heâd brought you to this alcove to speak to you in private? Is that why heâd been so nervous back in the support studio, asking to talk to you alone? Shouto Todoroki had wanted to ask you out?
You wondered at that. You couldnât understand why, when he could have his pick of any girl at UA. You were fine, sure -- reasonably smart with good grades and a neat appearance, but you werenât anywhere near his level of mind-numbing attractiveness. More than that, you didnât even have a quirk, and it was impossible that someone who wielded a power like half hot half cold was going to wade that far into the bleak depths of the dating pool. He had plenty of other options, so why come to you...?
Then, like a slow sunrise, it dawned on you what he was actually up to.
Todoroki was trying to get rid of all the confessions in one fell swoop. If Himari went back to her classmates and told everyone what had happened, rumors would spread very quickly that Shouto Todoroki was a dead-end bet. No one would try to ask him out anymore if his heart purportedly belonged to another.
That sneaky little fuck.
âRight,â you said, perking up and playing along gamely. âAnd I was just about to accept,â you announced to Himari.
Todoroki threw you a wild look like he hadnât expected you to take this track. Shit, had you been supposed to reject him instead? You could, you supposed, but what hot-blooded woman in possession of sound mind and sound body would possibly do so? Did he also want to start the rumor that you were a complete nutjob?
âUm, I mean, I was about to respond privately,â you backpedaled. âUh, nothing confirmed at this point.â
Himari gave you a furious look, her large eyes filling with tears, and turned on her heel, storming off. Your heart went out to her, just a little.
âYouâd really accept?â Todoroki asked you as soon as sheâd gone. Something unreadable glinted in his two-toned gaze.
You thought for a moment. Did he actually want to do this? It was barely a couple months until graduation, but you had nothing to lose in helping him. Maybe this was also your opportunity to study his quirk more closely, if you were going to be spending more time together to keep up appearances. You might actually be able to use him for your senior project.
âSure,â you said, smiling up at him. âIf you wanted this, I mean.â
A smile curved the edges of his mouth. âI did, yes.â
âGreat,â you said, âThen youâre officially my boyfriend, Todoroki.â
His smile widened. âItâs Shouto.â
You looked at him in question.
âMy name, itâs Shouto,â he said. âIâd like it if you would call me that.â
Something warm bloomed in your chest. This was all pretend but damn it was cute anyway. âShouto,â you tested it out, liking the sound of it in your mouth.
Shouto seemed to like it too, unwinding his fingers from your wrist to slip his hand into yours. The cool of his fingers between yours was soothing, and you quite liked the way it felt.
âAre you free Saturday, then, for a first date?â he asked.
He did nothing by halves, huh? You laughed. âYes, Iâm free. Text me the time and place?â
He agreed and you traded phones, plugging in each otherâs numbers. Then he walked you back to your workroom and left you with promises to see you Saturday, after sending you a characteristically straightforward this is shouto text to confirm.
You smiled as you watched him leave, pleased to be in on his little scheme.
Youâd never fake dated anyone before so you didnât really know what you were getting into, but you thought this could be fun. You were looking forward to whatever Shouto had up his sleeve.

Peeling Labels
Aspec Week, Day 7: Something New--Â @aspecarchivesweek
an exploration of Jon and demisexuality! As a demisexual mspec person, a lot of this is based on my own anxieties as an aspec person and not being âace enough.â (thanks to @ombreblossom for listening to me try to parse out how being demi feels and how to word it for the fic.)
Rated T for reference to a sex dream, but no explicit language/smut words used!
-
Jon has a weird relationship with labels. Labels are good, they categorize and compartmentalize feelings, situations, states of being. An archivistâs dream, really. But when they are applied to Jon, either by himself or someone else, they feel non-Newtonian, as if holding onto the word for too long causes it to slip through his fingers.
Usually, itâs fine. He knows that labels donât really matter, but they still feel good. Itâs comforting to know that he isnât broken or a liar or confused; there are people in the world who share a word with him. They are bonded under a flag of black, white, purple, and grey.
Jon had set the precedent quickly, with Martin, on the first night they had been in Jonâs flat, pressed against a doorframe and exploring each other with gentle urgency. âI-ah, Martin,â he had broken away from Martinâs lips, eyes shining with a mix of adoration and anxiety. âI donât think Iâve told you before, but Iâm asexual. Just-uh, well. Thought you should know.â
Martin had nodded, eyes soft and full of understanding. âOkay. Do we have a boundary I should know?â The answer was yes: anything below the belt was strictly off limits, to give or to receive. And that was that. Martin was the perfect gentleman, checking in constantly whenever they were in the heat of a moment. The rule remained and was never crossed. Rules have labels and that label was: asexual.
Except, it wasnât that easy. God forbid anything was easy for Jon. Labels are nice and theyâre helpful to the part of Jon that craves structure, order. Heâd found his ace identity while dating Georgie, after she gently asked him what was up after his third gentlemanly refusal of her advances. He had stammered out that he liked her, but didnât want sex, at all, and he didnât want her to be upset with him. And of course she wasnât, because sheâs Georgie, and she helped him find the word asexual, that glorious, blessed word that made so many frustrations and doubts slot into place.
Their romance didnât end because of his aceness, far from it in fact. In fact, honestly, they were probably together as long as they were because their friendship was the strongest part of their relationship. But god, they were too similar to be in love. They were both too stubborn, too determined, unable to reach compromise when it came to the silliest things like movie nights (Jon found Georgieâs Lord of the Rings box set far too long and far too pretentious for his taste) or how their cupboards should be arranged. Their relationship was something they could win, and they were both determined to be the victor.
In the end, they both lost.
--
While Jon and Georgie had been a couple first, friends second, he and Martin had a foundation. There was friendship, shared trauma, a love that surpassed romantic and dug into something deeper. When theyâre in bed and the dark is warm and heavy, limbs intertwined, Jon is reminded of the Greek myth of soulmates: a four armed, four legged being split in two, deemed to be too powerful by the gods. Sharing an essence, completing each other, making two halves whole. It makes Jon smile and kiss Martinâs forehead affectionately. They had been too powerful for the gods, hadnât they? Unstoppable, really.
All this to sayâŚwhat he has with Martin? Itâs new. Something he has never experienced before. And itâs leading to a host of new, confusing experiences. Heâs been in a relationship with Martin for nearly six months now. Jon really thought that at 32 years old, after battling down fear entity after fear entity in an apocalyptic hellscape, there were no new feelings he could experience. But here he was, lying awake, trying to trace patterns in the ceiling and understand the dream he had woken up from.
Not a nightmare. No, quite the opposite. Nightmares he knows how to deal with: slip out of bed, make a cup of tea or a glass of water, slip on the lamp by the bed, and cuddle into bed, reading quietly until sleep steals him away. But he does not know how to deal with this new dream of Martin, hovering above him, low voice stealing his breath and pressing kisses along his jaw, collarbone, shoulder as delicate, warm, strong hands brushed his body, dipping low with confidence. Jon woke up to a heat pooling in his core, tight and powerful, one he hadnât experienced in such a way.
Jon has a libido, sure, but itâs always been a bodily desire, not aâŚwhat would you call this? Emotional one? He certainly never fantasized about another person, especially not someone he knew, that felt so invasive. He felt a flush heat his cheeks and chest as he pictured that image of Martin his subconscious has supplied him, above and around him with that concentration face he wears whenever heâs starting a puzzle or stuck on a particular difficult crossword, the one that always makes Jon grin and kiss his wrinkled forehead. But this one looked more heated, more filled with lust. And it⌠it affected him. Jon realized with a dawning that he liked it. A lot.
Jon glanced at the bedside clock and sighed at the blinking green 5:15 on the LED screen. Good a time as any to get a hot shower and let his feelings wash away with the soapy water. He extracted himself carefully from Martinâs warm arms and slipped into the ensuite, stripping to the sounds of water pounding from the showerhead and letting the steam and hot water envelop him. He scrubbed himself down harshly, watching suds rinse down his legs and down the drain, trying desperately to keep his mind off whatever that had been.
Once his skin was blotchy from heat, Jon decided he had enough. He slid into the flannel trousers heâd left abandoned on the floor of the loo and slipped back to bed, trying to do so without disrupting his sleeping boyfriend. Martin looked so lovely like this, auburn curls streaked with white plastered against the pillow and his forehead, mouth hung open and naked torso splayed so openly, so unguarded. He looked so lovely, the freckles smattered on his shoulders and stretch marks carving beautiful lines across his skin; the stars and the rivers below, a whole world in the work of art that is Martin Blackwood. How would he feel if he knew Jon had had that dream about him?
Jonâs staring, the lowercase-b-beholding of the man he loved was broken by Martin sleepily opening his eyes, a moment of confusion followed by focusing on Jon, who was kneeling on the edge of his side of the bed, captivated.
âMmm. Hi there, love,â Martin mumbled, running a hand through his hair and sleepily glancing over at the clock. âYou alright? Bad dream?â
Jon nodded; the spell broken. âAh, yeah.â He couldnât tell Martin, it was just a dream; he didnât want to confuse Martin or worse, convince him he was a liar, that he wasnât asexual, that it had all been to avoid-
Oh. Martin had spoken. He was staring at him expectantly, waiting for a response. âSorry, say it again?â Jon asked meekly, sliding back under the covers.
âDo you want to talk about it, Jon?â The voice was patient, so patient. Jon shook his head and tucked himself into Martinâs side, tying up his damp, freshly brushed hair out of the way.
âI donât really remember it anymore.â Lies. âIt mustnât have been that bad.â Martinâs hands were cool on his skin, still warm from the shower, as they brushed over the planes of his face in a slow way, stroking his nose and cheeks and forehead in the way Martin always did when he wanted Jon to go back to sleep. With some reservation, Jon let himself fall back against the pillows.
--
Jon thought about âThe Dreamâ quite a bit in the week that followed. He wanted to understand it: why it had happened at all, but also, why it was still affecting him. Every so often, between emails sent and papers graded, his mind would drift back to the image of Martin, cheeks ruddy and eyes glassy, gazing down at him with such affection and Jonâs whole body would freeze up. Why was he suddenly attracted to Martin in such a new way? He loved that man with his whole being and yet, there was suddenly a new element, something unexpected, coming over the horizon. Itâs been almost six months with Martin; why now?
The implications scared Jon. He had always identified as asexual; it was a core part of who he knew himself to be. Had it all been an unknowing lie? Had he just never been attracted to Georgie properly? Was it like when people get STIs; would he have to ring Georgie up and say, âhey, sorry to bother, I was never asexual, oops!â? He really didnât want to have to do that. Would Martin be upset, angry that he had missed out on six months of potential sex just because Jon wasâŚwhat? Prudish? NaĂŻve? Afraid?
The worst part was that thisâŚdesire hadnât come on all at once, he realized. He hadnât even noticed the way his stomach would flip when Martinâs hands brushed his thighs, blaming his touch-based love language. It was in the way he stared at Martin when he couldnât see it; eyes tracing his form and wondering what it would be like to feel every inch of him, in a way he had yet to experience.Â
God heâŚhad to tell Martin, didnât he? He didnât want to feel like a pervert in his own relationship, observing and imagining from afar without Martinâs knowledge. It feltâŚdirty.
--
Jon made dinner, nine days after the dream. Nothing extreme, tikka masala, rice, and garlic naan. Martinâs favorite. As he cooked, he vacillated between trying to plan out what he wanted to say and very-much-not-thinking about how the evening could end. The worst outcome, he imagined, was Martin storming out, betrayed and heartbroken. ThatâŚthat probably wouldnât happen. No, he knew Martin Blackwood. Better than anyone else in the world. That definitely wouldnât happen. Lo-fi techno crooned through the speakers as Jon cooked and he let his thoughts float away with the music, trying to focus on the spices of dish he was making and not the knowledge that Martin would be home in ten-
Oh. Jon heard the shhlik of the door sliding against the welcome mat and felt his whole body tense up.
âJon? You making dinner?â Martinâs voice was warm as he called through the entrance, he didnât know yet what Jon was going to tell him, that it was all a lie-
âYes!â Jon called back, determined to keep his voice light and casual. âYour favorite. Be ready in five, so get out of your work clothes.â
âSmells delicious,â Martin was behind him now, voice low against the shell of his ear. Jon felt a shiver run down his spine, to where his stomach and pelvis met and a ball of electricity crackled there, unbidden. Martin kissed the crook of his neck chastely and Jon froze, unsure how to reciprocate.
âYou okay?â Martinâs chin was on his shoulder now, voice soft.
âFine, fine. You smell like crayons. The cerulean one.â Jon nudged Martin away casually, trying to pass off a witty remark.
âHazard of the job, I suppose. You know you love it,â Martin mercifully pulled his hands from Jonâs waist and retreated to the bedroom, and Jon exhaled in relief.
Jon plated the masala. Martin poured the wine. They sat down to dinner. Jon felt it all happen, was there for it all, but it passed in strange jerky stop-motion, and he couldnât seem to slow it down. He couldnât see to find the words, so elected for none at all, eating silently. Eye-contact would give away the anxiety brimming inside him, so he kept his eyes on his plate and the wine and the sleeve of Martinâs sweatshirt, anything but Martinâs warm hazel eyes that he knew so well.
âJon.â He could hear it in Martinâs voice, the gentle prompting. He could hear the worry, the confusion. God, it was going to happen wasnât it? He was going to tell Martin and what happened happened and he couldnât do anything to change that. âHow was your day?â
âI-ah. Martin.â He said, voice jerky, unable to find a rhythm that felt right. âI have something to tell you.â The words fell from his mouth in a tumble.
âOh?â
âI. I had a dream?â Martinâs eyes widened and he set his fork down. âN-not one of the Eyeâs dreams,â Jon reassures quickly. He really wished dreams werenât such a theme in his life. âNot a statement dream, but a⌠different kind of dream.â
âIâŚI donât follow.â Martin was confused, eyes searching Jonâs face.
âA dreamâŚabout you?â he tried, unable to add the words âsex dreamâ into his vocabulary quite yet.
âOh. Oh!â Martin understood at last, eyebrows raised and forehead that adorable, confused wrinkle. âThatâs, well, nice, I guess?â Jonâs face must have given way to his thoughts, as Martin tried again. âO-or maybe not?â
âMartin,â Jon steeled himself. âIâŚI think Iâm maybe not asexual.â The words rang sharp in his ears, grating; they didnât feel right. But it was true, wasnât it? He didnât know what sort of explanation there could be.
When Jon dared to look into Martinâs face, he saw an expression he didnât know how to parse. Furrowed eyebrows, eyes searching Jonâs face, head cocked slightly. âOkay. Because of the dream?â
âUm-kind of? But alsoâŚâ Jon felt blood rush through his cheeks, was certain the Desolation had picked now to tear its way through him, and was grateful. âIâve been thinking a lot. About you. In-in ways asexual people shouldnât. A-and I thought you should know, because I didnât want you to think I was lying to you and I donât want to be having those thoughts without you knowing because that feels rude, in a way? Like I set a boundary but have been crossing it in my head this whole time?â Tears stung the corners of his eyes.
Martinâs voice was even, level, hard to parse as he spoke. âJon, can I ask you a question? Only because you seem upset and I want to try to help you.â Jon was frustrated. Why wouldnât he have the decency to be upset? At a nod, Martinâs chair scraped backwards, and Jon found Martin kneeling him beside him, hands on his knees as Jon swiveled to face him. Taking his pockmarked hands in his own, Martin rubbed Jonâs knuckles slowly, tenderly.
âHave you ever felt those feelings before?â Jon shook his head meekly, certain the lump in his throat would betray him. âHave you had those feelings the whole time weâve known each other? Like, since the Institute?â
This time, Jon shook his head. âNot-not until after we were dating. The safehouse, maybe?â
âThis oneâs gonna sound a little rude, Jon, but bear with me. Do you think youâve ever been as emotionally close to anyone else as you are with me?â He squeezed Jonâs hands warmly, adding: âAnd I am with you?â
Jon shook his head. Of course not. Martin was something new to him, something untapped in the world. A treasure, a diamond in the rough. There was nothing that compared to their relationship.
âJon. I donât want to tell you how you identify, thatâs not my place, but I, I think youâre still asexual.â Jonâs eyes snapped to meet Martinâs; it was his turn to furrow his brow. âAfter you came out to me, remember? I started looking into asexuality. I wanted to be able to impress you at Pride this summer,â Martin ducked his head, wincing at the cheesiness of his words. âBut did you know thereâs a bunch of subtypes of asexuality?â
What? This was news to Jon. Thereâs wanting sex and not wanting sex, right? He shook his head numbly and felt a comforting, grounding squeeze of his hands again.
âThere was one I researched a little extra, because it confused me, and I wanted to understand the difference,â Martin continued, moving a hand to stroke Jonâs cheekbone, to guide his face to meet his. âDemisexual, Jon. Itâs a subtype of asexuality, and itâs when-â Martinâs eyes rolled back in his head, as they were want to do when he was struggling to recite something from memory. â-you donât even have to option to feel sexual attraction until an emotional bond is established. And itâs not, like, a one-to-one thing, either. There was a woman talking about her experience on a forum and she basically explained it like sex being a door, right? And the door has a padlock on it. Emotional connection opens the padlock, but you still have to open the door.â
Jonâs mouth was agape. HeâŚthere were so many things to parse out here. âYouâŚyou looked all this up for me?â
Martinâs cheeks pinked slightly. âI wanted to make sure I understood asexuality. Itâs a whole subgroup of its own; it was interesting.â Martin had been a Researcher for a reason, Jon supposed dimly.
âI. I want to research for myself, but demisexuality?â He rolled the word in his mouth as he spoke. It felt nice, weighty. âAnd itâs still asexual?â
Martin nodded, vehemently, pulling out his phone as he spoke. âYeah! Its flag is the same colors too, just arranged differently.â He showed him the white and grey flag, divided with a smooth purple stripe and a black triangle on the edge. âA-and, I mean, if you realize youâre not asexual, or youâre something else, you know Iâll still support you regardless, right? I donât love you because of your sexuality, or your identity. I love you because youâre Jonathan Sims, and everything else besides that is bonus.â
Jon exhaled, feeling the Choke release the hold on his chest. âDemisexual. IâŚThank you, Martin. For listening and believing me. I love you too.â He pressed a kiss to Martinâs forehead, carding fingers through the tumbled curls. âLetâs eat, and maybe you can show me that forum afterwards?â

Capricorn Year Ahead Birthday Spread
Starting from the top clockwise, theme in the middle.
1. December 2020- The World- This card usually means you will have a good outcome. You have completed one stage of your life, and now you're moving on to the next. Youâre made your goals a reality, and now you want to make new ones. Often you see this card with newlyweds in marriage or someone who started their own business. You will need to get comfortable in your new life. This is a travel card. You may be more involved in issues going on around the world. With the pandemic going on, this meaning may not resonate with most of you but I want to point out that it is a potential interpretation.Â
2. January 2021-Death-Â As we move into 2021, you are undergoing a transformation. Perhaps you were warming up to a new life change last month and now you're ready to make that change happen with the death card. Although the name of this card is enough to turn you off, it could mean something as simple as a career or love life metamorphosis. You will be faced with a life changing decision. Sometimes we need endings to move on to something better, so this may not necessarily be a bad thing. Usually this is a dramatic change. You wonât come out of this the same person you were before. Keep in mind this card does have a sinister meaning. This change is going to be drastic. It can mean literal death, but it doesnât always have to. The best case scenario for your January outcome is that this is the beginning of a blessing in disguise. You will likely feel sad or depressed over these events and should take extra care of yourself. Especially if this is an unwelcome change. This is a Scorpio card, so you may be dealing with one of them.
3. February 2021-The Emperor- This February you are going to achieve a level up in status. You will be an authority figure, or will have an authority figure take you under their wing and pull you up. I feel this has to do with career advancement. This will likely be a male. This is a person you love, that is in a higher social standing than yourself. You will have powerful and stable people around you. It could be in your career, where people see potential in you and want to promote you or invest in you in some way. Remember you donât know everything. Thereâs a lot to be learned from this person. No matter how smart or capable we are, we need to enlist help to achieve our goals. If this doesnât apply to your career, it could be your father, father-figure or husband. This is an Aries card so you are likely dealing with someone of that sign here.Â
4. March 2021- The Fool- While winter melts away and spring begins to bloom, you will go through yet another transitional period. New beginnings for you this Spring! I feel like you had one stable month in February, and now your back at the drawing board ready to reinvent yourself once again. You will have a burning desire to try something new. In this case I think you should go for it! If you overthink it youâll only come up with reasons why you shouldnât. Perhaps you are comfortable in Februaryâs stable situation but you donât find it rewarding emotionally or spiritually? I feel if you follow your heart's desires, all will go well. However if this is nothing but pure rebellion be mindful of what youâre doing. Donât just run away from your responsibilities. If you are no longer happy in Februaryâs outcome there is the âright wayâ and a âwrong wayâ to leave it. This card can also mean someone else will do the running from you, so keep that in mind. This may be a risk that has no promise of reward, as a Capricorn Iâm not sure you will be comfortable with that. You may go through a period of uncharacteristic indecisiveness. On the positive sign I feel you will have a lot of fun this month. You will have a level of enthusiasm and a thirst for life that will help you recover from January. Just donât let your behavior get too wild. Especially if mental health is a concern for you.Â
5. April 2021- Four of Pentacles- In April, you are going to be holding on tightly to all you have. This is a card about possessions and possessiveness. You need to pay attention to how much your financial habits and health. In more extreme cases, this could be hoarding behavior. Perhaps all the change you went through in the beginning of the year has made you want to hold on to what you have. However itâs unlikely you will want to share with others. You may be holding onto things that no longer serve you. This doesnât have to just mean material things, it can be emotions or relationships youâve outgrown but keep holding onto. In love, you may want your lover all to yourself. You refuse to let them go. This behavior may make you look needy or even worse obsessed. After awhile this behavior may annoy your partner and push them away. If youâve been supporting a family member, you are no longer going to be footing the bill. You feel like you shouldnât have to cover their groovy lifestyle. Or it could be vice versa. Assign the roles as you will. This could also indicate a revision of a will or inheritance. However if you have money, you are lucky to be in the position to hoard in the first place. Many are struggling right now and donât have it as easy. Keep that in mind when you cling to your purse strings. Thereâs nothing wrong with being frugal, but donât become cheap. This is your own card, so I feel this is your energy. However itâs possible you could be dealing with a fellow Capricorn.
6. May 2021-Five of Cups- In May you will be hit with a wave of sadness. You may have fallen into self pity and donât know what your next move will be. This is a shift for you into being more concerned about your personal relationships than you have been for the year so far. This is a break up card. I feel the overbearing behavior from last month will bring your relationship to an end. This is going to be very hard for you to deal with, but rest assured there is someone out there who is better for you. You and this person you're having the break up with werenât a good match, your personalities werenât compatible. But you donât see that yet. Your life is not over by any means, Capricorn. Nonetheless, you are feeling doom and gloom over it. You should seek help for your feelings from a therapist or people who are understanding in your life. Just donât try to battle this alone. If that doesnât apply. It could mean a fall out in your career. This will seem bad at first but you will gain valuable experience. Divorce and strained friendships could be at play here. All is not lost here, you will get a second chance after the dust settles. The universe likes people who get back up after being knocked down. This is another Scorpio card.
7. June 2021-Seven of Cups- Halfway through the year you will be faced with decisions. You will be faced with many valid choices, and will have to pick one. To make it even more tricky you will have a time frame to make the decisions. If you donât make your choice soon you could go from having many options to having none. You will also hear a lot of opinions about it too, everyone in your life is going to give you their two cents. Keep in mind not everyone knows your situation or has your best interest at heart. The work you do this month will dictate what your future looks like. One positive thing about having a lot of options is that you will be living a comfortable lifestyle. However nothing is guaranteed in your future so think about what's best for you down the road. This is yet another Scorpio card!
8. July 2021- Six of Cups- Something or someone from your past is going to reemerge this month. This is the âexâ card. So if you want to get back with your ex-lover this is a welcome sign. If that doesnât apply to you this is also a family expansion card. A case of childhood nostalgia may resurface because you are dealing with adult responsibilities now. If you want to have a baby this card is a good sign. This card can also mean the house you grew up in, or town. Itâs up to you to apply how this would fit into your life. On the negative side, there may be people from your past coming back that you donât want to see, or old drama coming out when you donât want it to. Something near and dear to your heart may vanish this month. Watch out, because this could be because you are neglecting the things you care about. This is yet another Scorpio card.
9. August 2021- Queen of Cups- You have a loyal female in your life with strong intuition. Sheâs sympathetic towards those she loves. This could be your own energy or a female who is close to you like your mother, sister or wife. This person puts others before herself. No matter what she has their back. Sometimes this can be a negative when you're looking at a situation with rose colored glasses. This card can also mean you need to take on the traits of this person. You may not be thinking of the otherâs point of view or you're just being down right selfish. You should aspire to be more like the Queen of Cups. How can you be more understanding of other peopleâs feelings? You may be dealing with someone born on the Gemini-Cancer cusp (June 19-24).
10. September 2021-Ace of Cups- As we roll into September, we see the ace of cups which usually means a sweet and pure love! I believe this could mean the start of a new relationship for you! So expect your love life to be of interest to you this month. However this may not be a long term relationship, but enjoy it while it lasts. This is also a pregnancy card. Specifically the birth of a female child. If this doesnât apply to you it could be your mother, sister, or someone close to you. This card can also mean a new beginning after a tragic ending. This card also means you will have a lot of dinner dates with friends and family. Hopefully we wonât have to socially distance anymore by then!
11. October 2021-Queen of Swords- With the queen of swords for your October, Halloween hi jinks will be the least of your worries. There will be a female in your business who loves drama and conflict. You may already know who this person is. She just wants to know the news of your life, she does not actually care about you as a person. Beware because this month she will be more involved in your life. This is a period of your year where you are going to feel very lonely. If none of this applies to you, itâs possible you need to adapt the queen of swords mentality. This person is very direct and to the point. I feel you are like this as well Capricorn. Even if she comes across as sort of a, well, bitch- at least others know where they stand with her. She tells it like it is. You may need to stand on your own two feet here and stop relying on others. Youâve got this Capricorn! You may be dealing with someone born on the Virgo-Libra cusp (September 19-24).
12. November 2021- The Chariot- This November will be a month of triumph for you! You will succeed in all of your endeavors this month. You wonât have any competitors. You will have an abundance of energy to make this all happen. However you may step on a few toes to get yourself in a higher status. The chariot can mean that you will use other people to get what you want. You should try to keep this behavior in check. Enjoy your accomplishments, but donât live off them for too long. If you start to look down on others you will lose their respect. Modesty will benefit you in the long run. If you have a driving test coming up, you will likely ace it! If you are in a position of power watch how you treat your employees. You may be dealing with a Cancer here.
13. Theme of the Year- Seven of Swords- You or someone else in your life is causing trouble this year. Drama and conflict accompany this card. You're surrounding yourself with people who are not loyal to you. When they sell you out, itâs going to leave you feeling hurt and betrayed. You may get the blame for something you didnât do. This is likely someone who is trying to cover up their own bad behavior. You will become the scapegoat. This person may be you. Consider if you are the type of person who tries to cover up their own bad behavior instead of facing the consequences. In less extreme cases this card can mean self-deception. You may be forcing yourself into believing you are happy with something you arenât. This will start to affect you emotionally this year. Play your cards close to the chest. Be honest with yourself about what it is you truly want. You may be dealing with an Aquarius in this situation or someone of this sign will have a major impact in your year ahead.

I hope I'm not being too awkward when I ask (and feel free to ignore this): if you had full creative control of the show, how would you run season 5? You can pick and choose whatever leaks you want to include.
Not awkward at all! Thank you for the ask, @arsenicpanda! This was quite unexpected in the best of ways!
It took me a while to come up with an answer, because as much as I like to speculate, my experience of Riverdale has always been that of the passive viewer: I consume the show as is. I watch. I applaud or I whine. Thereâs usually quite a bit of eye rolling. I also read A LOT of fanfiction. The latter experience serves different purposes than watching the show and none of those purposes are a canon fix-it. In terms of TV-watching, the product is what it is and I watch it purely for entertainment and relaxation. I do not engage creatively with Riverdale, although Iâm both critical of the show and VERY appreciative of the incredible creators in our fandom. So what would I do in season 5?? Iâll try to combine some of the things Iâd like to see with some of the things I think weâll get. Here goes nothing!
1. Wouldnât it be nice if, for once, a member of the Coopers werenât after Betty? Yes, Iâm talking to you Chick 2.0 Charles. However, I absolutely love @sullypantsâ hypnotism theory, which explains all the unpleasantness of 4x17-4x18, while being bonkers enough to be perfectly plausible for Riverdale. Canon accepted!
2. My head canon is that Jughead and Betty do not break up before, during or after college. Even if actual long distance (not the 15â Stonewall Express variety one) puts a strain on their relationship, seven years is a long time not to work through their issues, especially if bughead is supposed to be endgame (the same, incidentally, applies to post-time barchie). However, Iâll go with the break up for this one.
3. Jughead publishes his book. Itâs about Stonewall and itâs called Stone-cold. Thatâs peak canon!writer!Jughead right there. Bret reads Jugheadâs book and writes explicit fanfiction about it in prison.
4. Jughead does have writerâs block but he is not an alcoholic. WTF, Riverdale? Heâs also in debt because he has to pay student loans and has used the advance money for his second book to foot JBâs college tuition. Realistically, Betty should be in greater debt (4 years in Yale cost like 300k?!), but for some reason sheâs not.
5. Polly and the twin tweens move in casa Cooper-Jones. Jellybean moves out the next day. Iâm afraid we wonât hear of her again, because Trinity Likins is too young. WTF: I googled her and sheâs 18?! Revision: JB never moves out and has a lot of scenes with Jughead and Betty. We never hear of FP again. Heâs probably gone to the place Sierra McCoy is.Â
6. Hiram has one of the main storylines. Veronica guest stars. Hermione has had enough and joins FP and Sierra.
7. Betty goes back to Riverdale when Alice calls with news of Pollyâs disappearance, then asks the FBI to create a post for her there. Archie, also back in Riverdale, wants to helpTM Betty. He goes behind her back and convinces Bettyâs supervisor to be her partner while in Riverdale. For some reason, they have to fake date. Betty is furious. While on a âdateâ at Popâs, Jughead comes in. Heâs investigating Pop Tateâs disappearance. Archie is all about selling the fake dating. Betty is not. Jughead is ⌠not sure about things. Veronica and her s1xep1 black cape make an appearance. Core four engage in 10 minutes of uninterrupted cringe.
8. Archieâs earnestTM interventions distract Betty from figuring out things or put her in danger. Betty Cooper seethes at the mere mention of Archieâs name. Archie is oblivious to the bughead UST and tries to interact as much as possible with his old pall Jughead. Jughead does not appreciate. Veronica catches up with whatâs really going on one episode in. B and V become best friends again because the show is already juggling 10 different plots at once and ainât nobody has time for characterisation and shit. Ronnie sees Archieâs glistening abs and charity work and remembers that Chad hasnât hit the gym for 6 months and is also a very shifty businessman who works with daddykins.
9. At this point I would greatly appreciate it if feminist!icon!Veronica gets a storyline that passes the Bechdel test even for 1 episode. Unfortunately I doubt it. Her vendetta with Hiram has lasted so long, that I literally have no idea what would constitute a good storyline for her?
10. Betty gets shot (weâre overdue one of the girls having a near-death moment). Preferably trying to protect Jughead. Preferably Archie is there too but she doesnât give a shit, as Jughead is always her only choice. Preferably itâs Archieâs fault theyâre in this situation in the first place. But itâs ok, because his heart was in the right place (i.e. on the left side of his sternum). Give me the killer telling Betty she has to decide whom to save. Give me slow motion Betty tackling Jughead. Iâd like Archie to chase the killer (who escapes) while Jughead tries to tend to Bettyâs wound while calling an ambulance. Directorâs note: bloody hands are slippery on the i-phone screen. Preferably nervous over-talkative Archie vs mute Jughead in the hospital. Veronica consoles Archie, because her independent storyline was wrapped up in the previous episode. Give me Jughead crying while hugging Betty Cooperâs clothes in her closet. Archie finally admits he and Betty are not dating and that she canât stand him.
11. Betty gets a scar but otherwise heals admirably. In fact sheâs out of bed chasing the Mothman down the Lonely Highway by the next episode. Â
12. Other things happen, involving other characters. I donât know. Iâd really like to see Reggie in an odd friendship/partnership with Jughead (unfortunately doubtful). Also: if Cheryl isnât Dr Curdle Jrâs successor what is even the point?
Note: Ever since reading this incredible fic by @darknessaroundus, I desperately want bugheadâs final scene in the show to be Betty and Jughead breaking and entering with their baby in a sling.

Hey love, hope you are doing well ⨠I was wondering if you have any recommendations regarding side characters (personality analysis, friendship etc.) I absolutely adore all the side characters in the YOIverse however there are not many fics revolving around them so if you know any good ones, it'd be great!! Thank you so much in advance đ
Hey dear nonnie! This took a long time, I hope you're still here. I combed through ao3 to find fics I remember that fit your request and discovered new gems along the way! Many of these are not popular/underrated but I guarantee that they're good reads so I hope you (and anyone else who finds this) enjoy! If only for that reason alone, I really hope this rec list becomes one of the most popular posts in this blog (I would really appreciate a reblog!) so these fics/authors can receive more love! Plus this is the most exhaustive and time-consuming rec list I've made so far (but I still feel that I missed a lot so other recs are welcome!).
Without further ado, here are some great YOI side-characters' stories in canonverse:
(Don't) Give A Damn by @forochel [T, 9K]
Mari, through the years.
an open door by tripcyclone [G, 8K]
Lilia never wanted children of her own, but caring for Victor gives her a glimpse into the life she chose to pass by.
Beautiful In Knowing by @val-creative [T, 1K]
Sara knew she was a girl, even if nobody else did or believed her.
She ordered Michele to call her "Lady Sara" from now on. He would roll his eyes and grumble, but never attempt to misgender her. She liked "Sara" â it meant "lady, princess, noblewoman". And she would never go back to her deadname.
by any other name by iguanastevens [T, 2K]

After dinner and a bath and quality hamster time, snuggled in bed cocooned within his eight entirely necessary pillows, Phichit indulges himself and investigates Seung-gil's hashtag. There isnât much from Seung-gil himself, but Seung-gil's fans are many and dedicated. Amid the photos of Seung-gil at competitions or practicing and the few candid shots of Seung-gil in airports or out on the streets of Seoul, thereâs a very recent professional video uploaded by user andjoy_studio.
Phichit clicks on it, and his life changes.

Yuuko thinks of Yuuriâs skating, beautiful and flawed. She thinks of Yuuri sitting with the girls instead of the other boys at practice. She thinks of Yuuri and Viktor, the posters of him he asks her to buy him for birthdays. The posters he wouldn't ask anyone else to buy.
âOh, Yuuri.â She bites her nails, ruining the carefully applied polish. She doesnât care at all.

The world around her is like the mountains.
A mortal lifespan is narrow; mortals watch the mountainâs unchanging faces, unravaged by the same measure of time that takes a human from dust to dust, and think them immortal in comparison. But stone erodes, just as flesh decays. It just takes longer.
If she watches long enough, everything changes. Languages drift until all the words she learned before are meaningless. Technology changes until she ceases to believe in magic because human ingenuity is more infinite than the stars. What is beautiful, what is polite, what is wrong, what is rightâtime, given its way, reshapes all.
But Minakoâs body remains as it has always been. Thatâs why she loves to dance, she supposes; itâs the one thing time cannot take from her.

Quinquennial Life Assessment
So, itâs been a few years. When I was 19 I posted a sort of âroadmapâ for the evolution of my life on this blog. Today I thought Iâd revisit that. I want to take a look back and see what progress Iâve made, and then in a separate post I want to turn to the future, think about how my vision for it has changed, and consider how I can reincorporate these goals into that vision.
This is the list of things I wanted to get done in varying time frames. Iâve crossed off the things Iâve done to get a sense of my progress:
1 year:
At 19, my hopes were to accomplish the following things by age 20:
- Joined, and consistently participated in, at least 2 campus organizations that suit my interests, at least 1 of which should be competitive in nature - well, I joined the ISO and KVRX, my college radio station! Neither of those were competitive, but in retrospect I donât really care about that :-)
- Made concrete plans to study abroad - Nope, unfortunately I never did this. Iâm not quite sure I regret that, all things considered - I traded that experience for other things. I did make plans to spend a few months abroad of my own accord, and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it werenât for that meddling global pandemic. But as it stands I havenât done this.
- Learned C++ and python to proficiency - Hm.  âProficientâ is a relative term. But I think I have a tendency to downplay my skills, so in the interest of counteracting that Iâm going to count myself as âproficientâ in these languages. I think thatâs fair.
- Gone on at least a several day road trip with at least 1 friend - Iâve gone on several trips with @meeshbugâ, my very lovely girlfriend and best friend in the world :-)
- Decided on a concentration beyond the extremely vague umbrella of âcomputer scienceâ - Unfortunately as far as my education is concerned I never really did this. If anything my interests have *broadened* rather than becoming more focused. More on this later...
- Made meaningful, ongoing contributions to an open-source project - You know what? Iâve published the source of everything Iâve ever made, and Iâve gotten to the point where I can make stuff thatâs not trivial. So Iâm giving myself credit for this one.
- Learned to cook enough meals to eat in most days and not get sick of my own food - I wish. Iâve learned to cook a fair amount of stuff but I still get way too depressed and lethargic to apply that consistently. Whether I consider myself to have achieved this honestly depends on the month.
- Learned to keep my living area clean - Iâm much better at this than I was at 19, but at 19 I could barely clear a path to walk across my room. So thereâs more work to do. More on these last two later.
- Gotten a pet - Meesh and I have a dog named Courage (after the dog of cowardly fame) and a cat named Jax!
2 years:
- Independently written a piece of software to completion and deployed it publicly - Iâve always pretty bad at actually seeing projects through to completion, but I do have a few full, independent projects under my belt at this point. Iâve built a simple game engine, a pathtracer, plugins for games I like, and some other stuff.
- purchased and begun regularly using some basic amateur radio equipment - Ah man. I got my license but I still havenât gotten any equipment. I guess I have to get on that...
- purchased and begun experimenting with some basic music recording equipment - This one Iâve done, but I havenât done as much experimenting as Iâd like.
- hosted a party - I did this for my 21st birthday and itâs one of my favorite memories! Honestly this was probably the last time I had all my really close friends in one place. Iâm actually getting kind of emotional about that.
- done some kind of hallucinogen - I have now done this. I definitely did get something out of it, albeit not what I expected. This is something I actually only did pretty recently and itâs still having a pretty profound effect. Maybe Iâll write a separate post about this.
- Gone camping with friends - Despite my best efforts, this hasnât happened yet. Pretty fucked up.
3 years:
- learned to play another instrument besides the piano (guitar?)Â - I donât feel comfortable crossing this one off quite yet, but I went ahead and bought myself some guitar equipment and have been messing around with it lately :-) I think Iâm going to have to bite the bullet and pay for lessons if Iâm serious about this, which I am.
- Written and recorded a song - Damn, I canât believe itâs been 5 years and I havenât even done this.
- Met a group of people I can play music with - nope
- Owned a leather jacket.  I canât believe Iâve still never even owned a leather jacket - Iâve done this and wore it frankly too much. Kinda cringe.
- Worked as a professional software developer - Yep! Worked as a software developer for a retail company for a couple years. Iâm actually not working as a software developer right now, though; Iâm working in a sort of adjacent position. More on this later.
- Participated in research related to my field - Thatâs pretty ambitious. Not sure Iâll ever do this, unfortunately. But weâll see.
- Been to a film festival - Oh shit, I totally forgot about having written this. Thatâs a cool idea. I should do this, itâs not like itâs hard (well, at least in principle. I guess covid kind of changes the situation).
- Gotten a dog - Courage is one of those, I think, although he might also be part rat.
- collected 50 records - Lol, my dumb ass really thought I was going to buy $1,000 worth of records on college money. No, I havenât done this, but Iâm on my way there.
- Purchased a desktop computer - Well, my dad gave me his old desktop. Thatâs not really a purchase but I think it counts.
5 years:
- Begun accepting freelance development gigs - havenât gotten here yet and Iâm not totally sure this is a direction I want to go in my career. Freelancing has its own stressors as Iâve come to learn from others. No career path is sunshine and roses and Iâm trying to internalize this fact.
- Participated in a student film - Nope. I donât even know why I wrote this down to be honest.
- Gotten laid by solving a 5x5 Rubikâs Cube in front of a girl because surely thatâs gonna have to work on someone eventually, otherwise I wasted a lot of time - These are getting weird. Surely I didnât really expect this to happen, right? Well, either way I now have a long-term girlfriend, so I donât - wait, Meesh has seen me solve a Rubikâs cube and she saw it before we started dating. So actually Iâm going to give myself credit for it. Iâm the one who makes the rules here.
- Fleshed out my political opinions - Yes, I now know everything about politics and can answer 100% of questions on political issues. Just kidding. But I know where I stand.
- Participated in a protest or some other kind of political event - Done! Went to a few protests as part of the ISO, participated in lots of their events, and attended some protests with friends as well.
- Studied abroad - Nope :-/
- Learned a language other than Spanish - I took a semester of French! But I donât quite want to give myself credit for this one because I really would like to learn a different language to something resembling fluency.
- Run a marathon - Lmao. I am in much worse shape now than I was when I wrote this post, and even at that time I could probably do like 7 miles if I really pushed myself. How sad.
- Gone hiking outside of texas - This is weird because Iâd literally already done this when I wrote this post. But Iâve done it more since then, so hey!
- Been out of the country with a friend - This I had also already done. I guess the point is to have done it without âadult supervisionâ or whatever. I havenât done this since writing this list so I guess I have to leave it uncrossed.
10 years:
- Lived with a girl for an extended period of time - Meesh đĽ°
- Spent at least 6 months living on the road in an RV, preferably with a dog and a girl - God, I am so close to being able to do this. I donât want it to be an RV anymore - those things are expensive. But a van? Still pricey, but doable, especially if Iâm willing to sacrifice some comfort. This has actually been front-of-mind for a while. Iâll let you know when I get the balls to pull the trigger.
- Started making Real Money - Well, yep, I have gotten to that point. I do have other thoughts on this, though. Money is weird, man.
- Lived in a long-term living space outside of Texas (i.e. not including RV time) - How long is long-term? Three months? If so, Iâve done this by living in Boston with Meesh for a few months after she went there for law school. However, I anticipate staying there much longer in the near future, so Iâll wait on this crossing this one off.
- Written a book about something, idk - Not yet. Iâm halfway to the deadline on this one and I have some ideas, but ideas arenât worth all that much, especially to me, who rarely sees them through. Weâll see where this goes. Itâs not exactly a priority and historically I struggle to get even my priorities done. It might make more sense to replace this with recording a concept or narrative album, for which I also have ideas that I happen to take more seriously.
- Learned to solve a 6x6 Rubikâs Cube - nope
- Gotten laid by solving a 6x6 Rubikâs Cube - nope
- Lived in an apartment where I pay all the rent - Yes! :-))) We love independence
- Earned an advanced degree (this oneâs iffy) - This hasnât happened, and whether it will ever happen is something Iâve been thinking a lot about. I sort of decided half-way through college that I would be totally burned out on school by the time I graduated. But in retrospect it takes way less time to burn out on work than it does to burn out on school, and grad degrees are a different kind of thing. So itâs worth revisiting.â
- Given a best man speech (Sam, this means you have to get married within the next 10 years.  Good luck out there.) - Holy shit, Sam, you maniac, you actually did it! Sam got married back in 2019 and I gave his best man speech! Itâs another one of my favorite memories :-)Â
- Gone on a cruise with someone Iâm dating - Hmm, not yet. Iâve gone on cool trips, but none on a boat. Maybe thatâs something to aim for after the pandemic passes :-)
Retrospective:
1yr: Completed: 5/9
More than half isnât bad! Iâm not gonna worry too much about whether I got these things done within their assigned âtime-frameâ. Iâm a procrastinator in my heart and I donât see any reason to put that kind of pressure on myself. The point is, they got done. Thatâs enough for me.
The things I did best in in this category were academic things, and things to do with relationships. Iâm proud of the academic achievements, I really feel like doing them has increased my belief in myself and my sense that Iâm good at the thing Iâve spent the last four years studying. And of course, I am so happy to be in a loving, fulfilling relationship that brings so many good things into my life. I almost feel like the things I accomplished sort of fell into my lap - of course Iâm gonna do programming stuff as a programming student, and getting pets / going on road trips are things I did as a result of my relationship with Meesh. I donât say that to downplay the accomplishments, but I do think itâs worth noting.
The things I havenât done are more to do with personal development, which is disappointing. I would like to be able to say, 5 years down the road, that Iâve done the personal development I expected to do in just a single year, but maybe thatâs a lot to expect. These are problems Iâve dealt with my whole life. I think what this means is that I canât expect everything to fall into my lap. Those things are going to take real concerted effort to change. Iâm not quite sure how to go about that, though.
2yrs: Completed: 4/6
Two-thirds! Even better!
Lots of these are one-time accomplishments, not so much long-term commitments to personal development. The good news is, I did them, and I think those resulted in some development in their own right :-)
Again, though, the things I didnât do so well are the things that require long-term, concerted effort. For instance, while I crossed off the one about experimenting with music, itâs really only the initial investment that Iâve really done at this point. It remains to be seen whether Iâll be able to follow through on the commitment to actually experiment and learn.
3yrs: Completed: 4/10
This category also follows the same pattern Iâve noticed with the last two. The other thing Iâm noticing is that so, so much of my effort over the past few years has been going towards developing a very particular skill: programming / computer science. Music and art are so important to me, but Iâve done very little real development in those areas. I mean, Iâve done some. But not as much as I would have hoped for half a decade.
5yrs: Completed: 4/10
This is getting a little more fun because less of my goals have to do explicitly with my degree. Iâm starting to think beyond college, which is good, because the stage of life Iâm in right now requires me to start thinking about the kind of life I want to build now that Iâm done with school. Also, Iâm at the deadline for this one right now! So this is a particularly interesting category because it really shows where I thought Iâd be by this time.
The goals I accomplished in this timeframe are, again, mostly things Iâve done through my relationship, but politics also feature pretty prominently on this part of the list. I spent a lot of time reading and researching political issues during college and really did look for ways to participate. I honestly made politics a pretty big part of my identity over the last 5 years, and I think it will stay that way forever, but Iâve gotten to the point where I think I need to devote less of my mental energy to knowing more. I know what I need to know. Itâs time to think about other things.
10yrs:Â Completed: 4/11 (and counting!)
Thereâs some career stuff in this section that Iâve been able to do, which is good news. Iâve always been scared about entering the working world. All things told, itâs gone more smoothly than it could have. But I also have lots of lingering doubts about what I want to do in the long term. So one of the most pressing goals I should aim for is to resolve those doubts.
Ultimately, I have a lot of time left, and Iâm not even done with this time frame, so Iâm not gonna spend much time dissecting the things I havenât done. What Iâll do instead is say that while I didnât do everything on this list, I feel proud of the things I have accomplished. I said when I first wrote this list that itâs sometimes hard for me to feel that my life is moving in any particular direction, and Iâm still feeling like that five years later, to be honest. But looking back on these things has helped me see that I actually am making progress in my life. Not in all the ways I want to, but thatâs OK. Thereâs still time.
In the next couple days I want to come back to this and reorganize this list into an updated set of goals, for the same time frames. Maybe that will help me think through exactly what it is I want out of the next five-ten years, with the benefit of having analyzed the things that I did and didnât do well over the previous five.

The True Story of How I Became a Sex Educator and Researcher
Our professional biographies tend to serve as a âhighlight reelââthey only say the great things weâve accomplished and donât reveal the struggles, challenges, and uncertainties that went into building a career. To lift back the curtain on this, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) recently asked a number of scholars to submit their official bios along with their âunofficial biosâ that reveal an extremely different version of the story with more twists and turns.
You can read some of the examples here. Although I didnât participate in it, I thought it would be fun to do something similar on the blog. So here goesâIâll start with my official bio, followed by the real, behind-the-scenes story. Â
Official Bio of Dr. Justin J. LehmillerÂ
Dr. Justin Lehmiller received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Purdue University. He is a Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute and author of the book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life. Dr. Lehmiller is an award-winning educator, having been honored three times with the Certificate of Teaching Excellence from Harvard University, where he taught for several years. He is also a prolific researcher and scholar who has published more than 50 academic works to date, including a textbook titled The Psychology of Human Sexuality (now in its second edition) that is used in college classrooms around the world. Dr. Lehmiller's studies have appeared in all of the leading journals on human sexuality, including the Journal of Sex Research, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and The Journal of Sexual Medicine.Â
Dr. Lehmiller has run the popular blog Sex and Psychology since 2011. It receives millions of page views per year and is rated among the top sex blogs on the internet. In 2019, he launched the Sex and Psychology Podcast. It ranks among the top sexuality podcasts in several countries and has been named one of â11 sex podcasts that will help you get better in bedâ by Menâs Health.Â
Dr. Lehmiller has been interviewed by numerous media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, CNN, The Atlantic, The Globe and Mail, and The Sunday Times. He has been named one of 5 "Sexperts" You Need to Follow on Twitter by Men's Health and one of the "modern-day masters of sex" by Nerve. Dr. Lehmiller has appeared on the Netflix series Sex, Explained, he has been on several episodes of the television program Taboo on the National Geographic Channel, and he has been a guest on Dr. Phil. Dr. Lehmiller has also appeared on numerous podcasts and radio shows, including the Savage Lovecast, the BBCâs Up All Night, and several NPR programs (1A, Radio Times, and Airtalk).Â
He is a popular freelance writer, penning columns and op-eds for major publications, including The Washington Post, Playboy, USA Today, VICE, Psychology Today, Menâs Health, Politico, and New York Magazine. He has also interviewed several prominent authors, journalists, and psychologists about their work for his blog and podcast, including Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Lisa Ling, Drs. John and Julie Gottman, and bestselling authors Christopher Ryan (Sex at Dawn) and Lisa Taddeo (Three Women).Â
Unofficial Bio of Dr. Justin J. Lehmiller
When Justinâs parents asked him what he wanted to study in college, he said âpsychology.â He had taken a couple of psychology courses in high school that he found to be absolutely fascinating; however, his parents discouraged him from this because getting into a PhD program was tough and uncertain and, if that didnât work out, they didnât see much potential in a Bachelorâs degree in psychology. They encouraged him to pursue a career in occupational therapy (OT) instead because a family friend said âthey needed more men in the field,â and also because his parents saw it as a path to job security with a pretty good paycheck.
He applied to a 5-year combined Bachelorâs/Masterâs program in OT at Gannon University and was admitted. Incidentally, he was one of two men in the entire program. He spent a year and a half in it and made straight As in every course, including biochemistry and physicsâbut he wasnât happy. He recognized the importance of OT to society, but it wasnât his passion. After showing his parents that he was taking college seriously and earning good grades, they allowed him to switch his major to psychology.
Upon completing his Bachelorâs degree, he only applied to Masterâs programs in psychology because he didnât think he had the chops to get into a PhD program right away. The inferiority complex was strong in this one, so he didnât even try. He applied and was accepted to Villanova Universityâs Masterâs program in experimental psychology. He was not competitive enough of a candidate to receive an assistantship initially, although he eventually received one after another student dropped out. Â
He really wanted to study social psychology at Villanova, but there was only one social psychologist on staff at the time and several interested students. The only option for him was to beg one of the clinical psychologists to let him do a social psychology study for his Masterâs thesis.Â
As he began looking for PhD programs to apply to, he met Dr. Chris Agnew at a meeting of the American Psychological Association. Chris was studying romantic relationships and Justin thought that sounded like a fun thing to spend his life doing. Plus, Chris was a super cool guy who seemed like a fantastic mentor. He applied and was admitted to Purdueâs social psychology program, although he was initially waitlisted (and rejected from all but one other program). Justinâs plan was to get his doctorate and become a college professor. Teaching and research sounded like things he could probably do.
Justin was assigned to teach a Health Psychology course at Purdue during his first year. He had never taught a class before and quickly realized that he was very uncomfortable with public speaking. The class was a disaster. Attendance dropped 60-70% within the first couple of weeks. He had no idea what he was doing and dreaded going to class each dayâand he received poor evaluations in the end. Â
Around the same time, Justin submitted his first academic paper to a journal, it was promptly rejected and came with this review: âThis manuscript is fatally flawed and of marginal utility, which is a shame because potentially interesting questions could have been asked given the topic and timing of the research. The tone of this manuscript represents the worst in scientific misconstrual, particularly because the claims are silly, wrong, or not warranted by the data.â Justin clearly sucked at both teaching and researchâand if he couldnât do those things well, how would he ever become a college professor?Â
He also started hearing horror stories from advanced students in his program who couldnât find jobs and were sticking around for 6 or 7 years in the hope of eventually landing a jobâany job. All of this led Justin to question what the hell he was doing with his life. Maybe he should have listened to his parents after all? Chris encouraged Justin to stick with it, though, as did his friends and mentors.Â
The next year, Justin got assigned to be a teaching assistant for a human sexuality course taught by Dr. Janice Kelly. It changed his life. He had to lead weekly discussion sections with students and answer their sex questions (a subject he knew next to nothing about, having attended Catholic schools most of his life). He read about sex extensively and instantly knew he had found what he really wanted to do with his career. He saw it as something fun and interestingâbut also a way that he could make a real difference. He realized how little most people actually know about sex, and how education can correct so many harmful myths and misconceptions.Â
An opportunity to teach his own human sexuality class opened up the following year, and he took it. This time around, teaching was differentâhe was passionate about the subject and the students were, too. He had no problems with attendance. He ended up teaching this course six times before he graduated and eventually received a teaching award for it. He found that he loved being a sex educator.Â
He also found a solution to his public speaking anxiety: he started taking a beta-blocker (propranolol) on public speaking days, which removed physiological symptoms of anxiety. This allowed him to feel like himself in front of a crowd and, after just a few months, he no longer needed to take the medicationâthe anxiety had gone away completely.Â
He started conducting his own sex research, too, including a series of studies with Dr. Kelly on friends with benefits. His research skills improved and his studies started getting accepted instead of rejected.  Â
He eventually landed a job at Colorado State University as an assistant professor, where he stayed for three years and continued his work as a sex educator and researcher. His partner couldnât get a job in the area and had just taken a job in Boston, so Justin applied for every academic job within two hours of Boston. He was turned down for all of them. As a last-ditch effort, he applied for a teaching position at Harvard but had absolutely no confidence in it. He almost didnât submit the application, but his partner encouraged him to do so. Justin had applied to Harvardâs PhD program previously and was rejectedâif they didnât want him as a student, why the heck would they want him as a teacher?Â
To his great surprise, he got the job at Harvard, where he stayed for three years. However, he had given up his tenure-track job in Colorado for a teaching position in Boston with no job security. So he decided to reinvent himself just in case things didnât work out. In his spare time, he started a blog, wrote a human sexuality textbook, and became a freelance media writer. Communicating about sex science to the public became his hobby and was going to be his backup career in case the college professor thing didnât work out.Â
Eventually, Justinâs partner wanted to move to Indianapolis for a job opportunity, so they left Boston. But Justin didnât have a job at first and his backup plan wasnât yet enough to be a full-time job. He knew the Kinsey Institute was nearby, so he drafted a letter to the director in the hope of establishing a connection, but he never sent it. He had a severe case of imposter syndrome and did not feel accomplished or experienced enough to have anything to do with what he saw as the premier hub for sex research in the world.
Much to his surprise, the associate director of the Institute reached out to him after he moved to Indiana to explore opportunities for working together. It was actually his hobby/backup plan that caught their eyeâthey were interested in working together to disseminate sex science to the public and were impressed with what he had done with his blog and social media.
Justin affiliated with Kinsey, but also jumped back on the tenure track with a job as the Director of the Social Psychology Program at Ball State University, which fortuitously opened up about 4 months after he moved to Indianapolis. After 3.5 years, he decided to leave full-time academics and do his own thing. His science communication hobby had managed to grow into a full-time job and it was no longer feasible to do that and academics. Plus, he found that the science communication work was really where his passion was. So, the backup plan officially became âthe plan.âÂ
Justin now spends every day finding new ways to help educate and inform the public about the science of sex. Heâs still not sure how things ended up this way, but wouldnât trade his current job for anything.Â

Summary: Arthur, an aspiring comedian, has struggled to find normalcy and compassion his entire life. Y/N, a hard-working paralegal and transplant to Gotham, has just been put on a case for the Wayne Foundation. When they meet, unexpected sparks fly.
Chapter warning: Angst, Swearing
Words: 2,616
A/N: Special thanks to @ithinkimawriterâ for beta-ing this chapter! Sheâs awesome and you should check out her blog if you havenât already!
The doctor at the hospital met with them in his office. Penny had had an ischemic stroke, which weren't uncommon in women of advanced age, especially if they had a history of smoking. It was unknown if the lobotomy had increased the risk. The left side of her body was experiencing severe paralysis, and she could barely stand. She was also having trouble speaking and understanding speech. But she did appear to know she was in the hospital.
Y/N observed Arthur's face as the doctor rattled through the information. The expression he wore was neutral enough, but she saw his neck tighten on and off, and his eyes remained downcast. He was also chain smoking more than she'd ever seen. When the doctor would pause for a reaction or ask a question, Arthur's responses were curt.
"There isn't a need to keep her here much longer," the doctor intoned. "Her life isn't at risk. She should be discharged by the end of the week."
At that, Arthur closed his eyes. Y/N could guess what he was thinking: that he'd be stuck with Penny, again, except now he'd have to do more for her. That assumption must have hit harder than usual, given what he'd learned three days ago. His posture became rigid the longer they sat there. After he stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray on the doctor's wide desk, the doctor stood and told them to take their time, giving Y/N a soft look as he left. As soon as the door shut, she put her arm around Arthur.
He started laughing humorlessly and rubbed the back of his neck. "It'd be easier if she'd died."
"You don't mean that," she said.
"Yes, I do."
She pressed her lips together. "It's normal to have mixed feelings."
âI donât have mixed feelings,â he replied.
Kneading his shoulder, she chose her next sentences carefully, not wanting to unduly influence him. But she hoped could lift some of the weight he carried. "There are options for her care."
Lighting up again, he furrowed his brow and stuck his pack of cigarettes back in his pocket. "I don't have any money, Y/N," he said tersely.
"There are programs you can apply for."
He scoffed and looked at her skeptically. "They cut all those."
"Federal programs, not Gotham services. They won't be cut because the Waynes or whoever else in this city doesn't want to pay taxes." That made him smile crookedly. "We should be able to get the paperwork from the hospital social worker - they deal with this all the time. We'll fill it out and you can decide whether to submit it or not." At his nearly imperceptible nod, she leaned into him. "You've taken care of her twenty years, Arthur. You've given her enough."
After speaking with the social worker and completing the applications, they walked by Penny's room. He stopped outside, his grip on Y/N's hand tightening. She watched his narrowed eyes, the way he worried his lip. "Do you want to go in?" she asked gently.
Anger flashed across his face, his nostril twitching. But after a few minutes, he released a long breath and shook his head. "No," he rasped. "I don't need to."
~~~~~
After leaving the hospital, Y/N had gone back to her apartment to get her notes and presentation. A lick of excitement went through her as she walked into Mattâs office. What she was about to go over was the culmination of hours and hours of off-the-books work, and she was relieved she'd no longer have to keep the information secret. With all the evidence she'd collected and put together, she thought thereâd be a good chance she'd be heard.
She sat on the other side of Matt's desk, wearing her best skirt suit and modestly ruffled blouse, and explained everything she'd found so far: the properties' lack of disrepair; the corresponding dates of the Wayne Foundation's motions and Renew Corp.'s letters; the matches of employees listed on the foundation's tax returns and registered agents of the corporation; and the ridiculous conversation she'd had with one Anthony Mancuso at the gala.
It took awhile. When Y/N was done, she leaned back against the chair she was perched on, unbuttoning her top collar. "So," she said when Matt didn't answer. "Are you going to stop this shit?" She ducked her head slightly to study his expression. He was squinting. And she thought he looked a little glum.
He continued to peruse his copy of her notes, tapping his pen on each line as though it meant something. "Your work is very impressive, Y/N. You put a lot of effort into this."
She smiled widely and let out a long breath. "Thank you."
"But I already explained that we can't simply drop this case."
The initial resistance didn't come as a surprise, but frustrated her nonetheless. "I'm not a lawyer," she said. "I don't have any duty to these people or their organization or foundation or whatever."
His gaze was weary when their eyes met. "They have us on retainer-"
She leaned forward. "Do you really want the Waynes to be able to own more of this city?â As her indignation grew, she stood and stepped behind her seat. "I've looked it up, Matt. Both directly and indirectly, they're the largest landowners here."
"What do you know about the Waynes?" Matt countered. It was one of the few times he had ever sounded annoyed at her. "You're a transplant. Gotham owes them a lot."
Rapidly, she was losing any hope that reasoning with him would affect anything. But she continued to try. Maybe changing her tack would help. "Let's say it wasn't the Waynes," she started, putting her elbows on the high-back. "It's some other temporarily benevolent billionaire. If we win this case, it's going to set a precedent for property to be seized and shoved into private hands. It'll be easier for anyone to do this in the future, again-"
"Y/N, stop."
"-and again." Y/N huffed, gesturing towards him with an upturned palm. "I've always thought you were a good person, Matt. I can't believe you approve of this!"
"It's not that simple. You're experienced enough to know that," he said, raising his voice slightly. "The Wayne Foundation is our largest client. Without their money, we wouldn't exist.â Counting on each finger, he continued. âThey're buying your groceries, keeping you in your apartment, allowing you to dress as nicely as you do."
Y/N felt the hair on her neck stand up at the idea she would be "allowed" to do anything. "You're scared of them."
"No,â he breathed. âI'm being pragmatic."
She folded her arms over her chest. "Yeah, well, your pragmatism is going to hurt a lot of people."
Matt stood and leaned forward onto his desk with his hands. It wasn't a threatening posture, but a tired one. "This was the first Wayne case you were entrusted with. You were so damn happy about it." Shaking his head, he sighed. "The other lawyers here didn't think you were ready, but I knew you were. Turns out you were too ready." He chucked sadly. "I'm sorry."
Y/N stilled, her mouth opened slightly. "Are you... Are you firing me?" As she waited for his answer, she mentally went over her financial situation. A couple months of pay were in her savings account, her checking had about a thousand dollars in it. She thought she'd be able to get unemployment, but there was a waiting period, and-
"No. The work you do on the family cases is excellent. I like you. And Patricia would never forgive me." He gestured towards her with his pen. "But other people in this firm would let you go. If you breathe a word of this to anyone else, you will wind up losing your job. Do you understand me?"
Gulping, she looked down at the floor and nodded. "Thank you," she said meekly. A sense of defeat, mixed with relief at still having work, settled in her stomach. It caused her to feel like the smallest person on Earth.
She exited the office before he dismissed her and sat at her desk. She still had her copy of her notes at home. But she didn't know what do to with them. Trying to distract herself, she dug out the list of upcoming family court dates and corresponding files, sinking into the routine of them until her mind went numb.
~~~~
It had been close to seven when she'd gotten to Arthur's, later than she'd told him. She hadn't wanted him to see her upset, thinking he had enough to worry about. He'd kissed her at the door and frowned when she hadn't responded enthusiastically. After a quick sorry, she'd kicked off her shoes and said, "I had a really shitty day and need some time." Then she went straight to the bedroom and lay down. She'd left the door open, though, not wanting to shut him out.
She hadn't been laying long, maybe fifteen minutes, when she heard him approach. Wondering what he would do, she pretended not to notice he was standing behind her, next to the bed. It only took a couple minutes for him to climb in next to her. "Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
"Amish."
God, she could tell this was going to be terrible. She rolled her eyes, the corner of her lips turning up. "Amish who?"
"Amished you."
Unable to help herself, she chuckled. When he nuzzled at her face, she twisted her torso to look at up him and drew him down to her mouth. One of his arms went around her head as she kissed him deeply, his other hand holding himself up. "Thank you. I needed that," she said. "Was that an old joke?"
"No, it just came to me. It happens sometimes." He stood, then. "Spaghetti's on the stove."
Stretching, she sat up and followed him to the kitchen. He already had a plate out for her, so she served herself, listening as he continued to talk. "I mailed the forms we filled out."
She scooped sauce out of a second pot. "If you change your mind, you can reject the funding."
"I won't," he scoffed as he wrapped an arm around her waist.
Turning around, she looked to see if he had dried parmesan somewhere on the counter. She didn't find any, but what she did see stopped her. There, in his pile of mail on the breakfast bar, was an unopened red letter. That same terrible feeling of disappointment that Arthur had helped her through returned.
She reached out for the envelope, biting her lip. There was no return address, but she recognized the font Penny's name was printed in. It was definitely from Renew Corp. She wasn't ready to talk with him about this, to admit she'd failed everyone, failed him.
But, she supposed, she was being pushed into doing the right thing. She had a seat at the breakfast bar and patted the stool next to her. He followed eagerly, a puzzled expression on his face. She went over a simplified version of the same explanation she'd given Matt. It came easier this time, having had that earlier practice. Mid-way through, Arthur lit a cigarette and rested his forehead on the side of his hand, elbow on the counter. He seemed to understand well enough, but became quieter and quieter as she went on, staring at the letter threatening to kick him out in ninety days.
"You're going to keep getting these letters. They're trying to bully you." She felt her patience with the situation slip away the more she spoke. "But what they're saying isn't true. It'll take a long time before they can do anything. It has to go through the cour-"
"Is this why you're seeing me?" he interrupted.
Holding the fork just under her mouth, she stared at him. "No. Of course not," she said as she took her last bite of dinner. "That doesn't make sense. This is a legal issue." It was a logical answer, but apparently not the one he wanted. When she reached to touch his bicep, he pulled away from her, taking her plate and going to the kitchen. "Arthur, I found out your building was involved last week."
He started rinsing her dish. "Before or after we-"
"After." Y/N stood but didn't follow, remaining on the far side of the counter.
He wasn't looking at her when he turned around and took a drag off his cigarette. "You should have told me."
She leaned onto the bar with her forearms. "And give you more shit to deal with? Are you kidding?"
"I've dealt with worse," he bit out, flicking ash into the sink.
Her tone was snappier than she meant it to be. "Iâve been working on it for weeks. It's not like Iâve been doing nothing." She shook her head, knowing she wasn't only upset at his stubbornness and refusal to see sheâd been trying to shield him. But also at all the time and energy she had put into caring about this case. She was irritated at her powerlessness. And heartbroken at the whole damn thing. Dropping her head to look at the counter-top, she sighed. "Dammit, Arthur. Why can't our first argument be about what restaurant to go to, or what movie to see, or whose apartment we're spending the night at?"
There was no answer to her attempt at cutting the tension between them. He simply stood, unmoving except for the twitch of his fingers as he fiddled with his cigarette. His voice was low when he finally said the wrong thing. "Penny lied to me all my life. I never thought you would."
The cut of those words went deep. Heat went up her neck and face, and she knew she was turning red. "If I had shown up at your apartment, soaking and in the state you were in, telling you to get rid of a razor, would you have told me?"
He flinched at that, but she continued anyway. "No, you wouldn't have." Stepping to the entrance of the kitchen, she threw up her hand. "And don't act as if you've been completely honest. You must have done more than drop off a letter for Thomas Wayne to tell you about Penny's file."
Arthur nodded stiffly, then narrowed his eyes as he smoked. "I need you to leave," he said. "I have to practice."
She folded her arms over her chest. "You're doing this again?" At his lack of response, she slipped on her shoes and started putting on her coat. "Fine. Be angry at me for trying to protect you." Even as the words left her, she knew she didn't mean them. But his obstinacy pissed her off. When she picked up her canvas bag, he went to her and opened the front door.
As she stepped out she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. This entire argument was stupid. They were both wrong and right, in their own ways. And they'd hurt each other. Sheâd been waiting to see him all day and was loathe to end the evening on a sour note. She turned around to face him. "Hey," she said, consciously softening her voice. His eyes bore into hers as he set his jaw. âArthur, weâre being idiots.â Then she set her bag down and tried to put her arms around his neck. âLetâs not be angry. At least, not at each other.â
He caught her, gently but firmly, mid-embrace and pulled her arms away from him. "Just go," he said, then turned around and closed the door.

Charlieâs College Crash Course #1:Â How to write a 10-page paper in 1 day
Background info first: Iâm in the last year of my English undergrad degree and Iâve had to write at least 3 dozen 10+ page papers in that time. That being said, Iâve never once started writing a paper more than a few days in advance, and 9 times out of 10 I go for one day only. Honestly, this should be considered my trademark at this point because after all my high school AP courses and my English degree, itâs been going on 7 years of 1 day papers.
and so, dear friends, I would like to pass on this skill to you all. I should mention, none of this will work if youâre not already pretty solid on paper writing, i.e. if you only ever get Câs on your papers now this isnât magically going to get you up to an A with one day. This is just to streamline the process, allowing for more time for other things or, more commonly, allowing you to not freak the fuck out when you realize the deadline is tonight at midnight and youâve procrastinated all month on the final paper for your class.
(I should also mention that Iâm currently procrastinating a 2.5k word paper due tomorrow night that Iâve only read one of two books for, so. Thereâs that.)
Anyway, without further ado, here we fucking go:
Step 1: Prep for the Day
this is going to be a marathon, not a sprint, so make sure you prep the day accordingly. Ideally, youâd wake up before noon, make sure thereâs nothing else planned for the day, and tell your roommates/parents to leave you alone until you officially reemerge at midnight (or, if youâre in college and have a 24 hr library, try going there. Mine has closed off study rooms that I can chill in, but if youârs doesnât just find a relatively comfy quiet spot). If youâre at home, pick one spot, clear it off super quick, grab some snacks and energy drinks, make sure you have everything charged and ready to go. I donât recommend cafes or the like simply because thereâs lots of distractions and also those places close before midnight, so you canât stay there the entire time and therefor waste time moving halfway through.
Also, I would recommend taking a break between all the steps after this one. Donât let the break take too long, but just long enough to walk the block, or grab another snack, or do some stretches, or watch a ten minute video, something like that. I personally never break at a natural stopping point, because then Iâll never get back to it, but how you break is up to you.
Step 2: Preliminary Research
now normally I do some preliminary research beforehand. Basically looking into the topic, figuring out generally what resources would be best, etc. That can usually be done in five to ten minute bursts throughout the week or so before the due date, whenever the topic comes to mind.
But then again, Iâve also procrastinated that until the very end as well, so. Usually all that takes if you go for the day of is some quick google scholar searches, or if you have access to the MLA database that works as well. Or, if youâre more like me, you could just deep dive on wikipedia and check out what relevant facts pertain to what numbers in the bibliography, then go ahead and cite those wherever possible.
Basically, get a good base knowledge of the big facts. This step should be quick and dirty. For instance, for my paper my sophomore year on Robespierre (14 pages written in a record 6 hours) I combed through his wiki, some websites on the French Revolution, and watched the Crash Course youtbue video on the subject. The rest of the research was done after I did my first outline.Â
Step 3: Outline #1
This is just a basic âWhat the fuck am I talking aboutâ outline. It can be bullet points, numbers, stream of consciousness, i donât care as long as it works for you.Â
For the Robespierre paper, my first outline was something to the effect of: -born poor -school -elected to govt -took over govt -killed people -got killed
and that was it. Itâs like, before you build a house you have to clear off the right amount of land, make sure thereâs nothing in your way, and give yourself a vague area in which to build. Super simple stuff.
I did get some advice, from somewhere I canât remember, that a paragraph is basically equal to half a page, and so (excluding one page length for your intro + conclusion) you should have around two paragraphs or ideas per page. So my outline above would need some more points, there, to keep me on track for my page count. I eventually added a whole paragraph about how he was chosen to read for a visiting King Louis at his school and was then ignored which made him hate the monarchy, and another about what happened after he died what with the government in shambles, etc etc. So two bullet points per page should do it.
Step 4: More Research
This is where you get a little more in depth. Look at your bullet points and learn everything you need to about them.Â
For my first bullet, I found stuff like: âRobespierre was born in France in 1758 as Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre (the third of this name), to a lawyer and the daughter of a brewer, he had two siblings, and he could read by age eight. he also loved pigeons and started a lifelong feud with his sister over one that he gave her that she let die."
and then I would move on to the next bullet point, and so on and so forth, filling in the gaps. Make sure to keep track of where your info comes from, as well. It doesnât have to be a full citation, but just the hyperlink after the fact is going to save you so much time, i promise
Pro Tip: donât throw out anything as irrelevant just yet. Just gather all the facts, no judging. Trust me on this.
Step 5: Better Outline
this is where you start to have fun with it. I would like to remind you that no one, unless you have some crazy micromanaging professor, sees your outlines. This is for you and you only, so write it in whatever way makes sense to you. It can be colorful and fun and whatever you need it to be.
I actually took screenshots of my outline for that robespierre paper (hence why i chose that one as an example) so hereâs a look at what I do:
so, really, honestly, as shitty as you need this to be, or as many jokes, or whatever works for you my dude. Explain it like you would if it were a story you were telling, not a biographical/argumentative paper. Get informal with it.
Step 6: Write the Damn Thing
Okay to now that you did the research and wrote your fun outlines and all that, all you have to do now is write it! I tend to do this in the same doc as I do my outline, but starting again from the top so I can see what I need to add next right under where Iâm typing, then delete it once Iâve covered the material.Â
If you did your outline well, this is really just cleaning that up so itâs âschool appropriateâ and ânot an affront to peopleâs eyes and sensibilitiesâ or whatever. At this point, it should go super quick, maybe 2 hours max to finish up writing what you need to write, here.
Pro Tip: do your citations as you go. Better yet, make your bibliography first so that A its already done and B you know what your in text cites will be from the start so that you donât have to add them in later. If you kept your hyperlinks next to your research, just open up citationmachine and get those cites, then replace the links in your outline with the actual citations so itâs easier to line them up with in text cites while you go
Step 7: Fudging
oh, you thought we were done after writing the paper? nah fam. Chances are, you didnât hit the page count you wanted to, youâre probably around 1 full page short, unless you love long sentences. This is where my pro tip from all the way back on step 4 comes in.
First, before you do anything drastic, make sure your formatting is correct. If your prof wants the big long âname, date, class, assignment, etcâ in the top left then that adds a lot of length. Fonts will also change your page length, and so will footnotes and citations.
If you did it right and saved all the less relevant details, congratulations! Just sprinkle a few of those in there and youâre magically at your page count. This is the only reason I included the pigeon story in my paper (and this post), because I was about 3/4 of a page short of passably saying I got to 14.
If you didnât save those inane details, donât go looking for them now. Trust me, itâs much more pain than itâs worth. Your best bet, then, would be to either A. Add one more point if you can think one up, B. do some more research for relevant details to add in, or C. expand on the details you already have with more examples or effects or whatever applies.
do not, i repeat do NOT, just try and expand the words you use, like changing âtoâ into âin order toâ or whatever those deflate your phrases charts tell you Not to do. They tell you not to for a reason. 1. it sounds stupid adding them in after the fact, and 2. your professor absolutely 100% will know and will mark you down if you do that in excess. Inflated phrase charts like that are well known by professors, and also adding them in after the fact wonât fit in at all with the voice that the rest of your paper was written in, so itâll stand out like a sore thumb. just donât do it unless itâs your last possible âi have ten minutes to turn this inâ effort.
Step 8: Celebrate!!
And thatâs it! If you did it right, this whole process should have taken you around the equivalent of 1 hour per page you had to write or so, so in a regular twelve hour day youâve got time to take breaks and eat and all that shit. Go turn it in and celebrate your victory!

Taking Care
Pairing:Â Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count:Â 1,579
Warnings:Â mentions of blood (very slight), soft Bucky, fluff, probably typos because itâs 1 am
Summary: Y/N and Bucky take care each other after he returns home from a mission.
A/N: How is it that Iâve posted twice in the past two days while having to attend school, but it took me two months to update TDDUP when I was completely free? I had the idea a week or two ago and have been working on this for a few days now. Anyway, I really hope you like it!
Masterlist // Ko-fi
Despite the unusual quiet in the compound, you still have a headache. In an attempt to distract yourself from the throbbing pain, you make your way into the kitchen to fix yourself some dinner. Normally, you would all eat together, but with a good portion of the team out on a mission this past week, those remaining would just eat whenever they felt like it.
Youâve taken only a single bite out of the small meal you cooked up for yourself when Natasha pops her head into the kitchen.
âMissionâs complete. They land in 20,â she says before disappearing.
Excitement bubbles within you, and you scarf down your food so youâre finished when they arrive. It was Steve, Sam, Bucky, Wanda, and Clint on this mission, but Peter was off at school, Rhodey was on business elsewhere, and Thor was in Asgard. That left only you, Natasha, Vision, Bruce, and Tony in the compound, but it might as well have just been you, Nat, and Vision. The other two were off in their respective labs.
Youâve missed your friends dearly. Of course you love talking and training with Natasha, but you miss running with Sam and having coffee in the morning with Steve, or sparring with Wanda and watching movies in the common room with Bucky.
Natasha pops back in a little while later to inform you that they would be back at the compound in 5 minutes. You hop down from your stool, swiftly clean up your mess, and follow her to the landing pad.
âAny injuries?â you ask, a little nervous although you hope she would tell you anyway.
âSteve told me that Clint and Wanda have a few scrapes and bruises, but nothing to be worried about.â A relieved sigh escapes your lips.
Within the next few minutes, the quinjet comes into view, and youâre just short of bouncing on the balls of your feet. The craft lands gracefully, and soon your teammates are filing off with their gear in hand. Wanda and Steve are first to come through the doors, and you nearly tackle them to the ground in a bone-crushing hug. Sam is next, and he drops his bags to give you a proper greeting. Clint waves to you as he and Natasha embrace. Soon after everyone begins making their way further inside the compound, but you stand there waiting for the last member of the team.
âWhereâs Bucky?â you shout to Steve from down the hall. The volume of your own voice makes your head throb even more.
âHe should be coming inside in a minute,â he calls back.
Leaning against the wall, you patiently await the super soldierâs arrival. Finally, you see his figure descend the stairs of the quinjet before making his way toward the doors. You can barely make out his face in the shadows cast over him, but you notice something different, something dark. And then it clicks.
Despite the rule against walking on the landing pad unless boarding/exiting a craft or treating the wounded, you run through the doors toward the former Winter Soldier, skidding to a harsh stop not more than a foot in front of him.
âWhat the hell happened to you?â you ask, referring to the deep laceration on his left cheek. A couple of smaller scrapes and cuts litter his forehead and nose, with dark purple bruises beginning to blossom around them. âI was only told of a few minor scrapes on Wanda and Clint.â
âYeah, âcause itâs not a big deal. Itâll all be gone in two days at most. Didnât want anyone to worry,â he says, so nonchalantly it irritates you.
âBuck, thatâs a deep cut. I know you heal a lot faster than the rest of us, but it could still get infected.â
âIâll be fine, donât worry.â
You grab his bag from his hand and sling it over your shoulder before leading him inside to your bathroom.
âSit,â you tell him, gesturing to the closed toilet.
âY/N, you donât have to-â
âI said âsitâ.â He takes a seat as you rummage through your cabinets, retrieving disinfectant, gauze, and the rest of the supplies you need to tend to his wounds.
âWelcome home,â you say with a lighthearted giggle as you prepare a cotton pad with some disinfectant.
âThank you,â he replies cheekily.
âThis is probably gonna sting, but not as much as it did when you got that,â you joke before dabbing the blood from the gash on his face. He winces, squeezing his eyes shut as he grits his teeth. âYeah, thereâs gonna be a bit of that for a few minutes. I apologize in advance.â
âSâalright, doll. Iâm a big boy, I think I can take it.â You roll your eyes at the pet name as you prepare another cotton pad. As you turn to face him again, he gently grabs your wrist. His eyes scan your face, studying you. After a moment, he stops, and youâre about to open your mouth to speak but he beats you to it.
âYou have a headache,â he deadpans.
âAnd you have a gash on your face. Now, if weâre done pointing out each otherâs ailments, Iâd like to continue treating that cut of yours.â Bucky doesnât protest, just sits there and waits for you to continue.
About 15 minutes later, youâre just about finished tending to his cuts, and heâs told you all about the mission. He spoke softly the entire time, trying not to worsen your headache.
âThere you go. Youâre all done,â you say as you apply the final bandage.
âThank you again, Y/N.â His smile is so sweet, it makes your heart flutter.
âOf course,â you say as you gather up all of the bandage wrappers and toss them in the trash.
âDo you want some tea?â He barely whispers the words. âI-I mean, I know you like tea, and Iâve read that it can help soothe headaches. I can make you some if youâd like,â he continues. It catches you off guard. The two of you were friends, of course, but you werenât nearly as close with Bucky as you were with Sam or Wanda.
âI- Yes, that actually sounds really nice. Thank you.â You try and fail to suppress the grin that grows upon your lips. Bucky only nods in response before mindlessly linking his fingers with your own and exiting your room. The two of you walk in silence to the kitchen, which is empty. Youâre not all that surprised, though; even Steve looked exhausted as he came in from the quinjet.
You take a seat on one of the stools at the little island as Bucky goes to the stove to begin preparing your beverage. You would never admit it, but you miss the warmth of his hand against your own already. Luckily, though, a fresh cup of tea is warming your hands only a few minutes later. You close your eyes as you bring the mug to your lips and take a sip, but flinch when you feel the slightest amount of pressure against your temples.
âIâm sorry, I shouldâve said something first,â Bucky says apologetically. You can feel the heat radiating from him against your back.
âNo, no itâs okay. I just didnât expect it is all,â you assure him. He nods before tentatively reaching forward again and begins gently massaging your temples. He smiles at your hum of satisfaction and continues the gentle delicate motion until youâve finished your cup of tea.
âThank you so much, Buck,â you whisper before patting the seat beside you.
He takes a seat. âItâs no problem at all, especially after what you did for me.â
âAw, it was no problem. Iâd do it for any of you.â
A soft smile crosses his features, and he suddenly looks somewhat distant, as if heâs thinking about something. Youâre about to ask when heâs thinking about what he speaks up.
âWould you want to go out sometime and grab dinner, or maybe just coffee or something?â he asks, sounding a bit unsure of himself. When you continue staring at him for a moment, he grows even more nervous. You shake yourself from your daze when you notice the uneasy expression on his face.
âIâm sorry,â you start, a broad smile blossoming on your lips. âDinner sounds really nice, actually. Iâd love to.â Bucky exhales deeply, realizing that he had been holding his breath. You let out a giggle at that, and he grins, setting your heart racing again.
âHow about tomorrow night at 7? Thereâs this nice spot that I think youâll love,â he says, and youâre sure that he doesnât realize just how charming he is.
âThat sounds perfect.â
âItâs a date then.â
âIâm looking forward to it,â you say with a silly smile as you get up from your seat. âIâm gonna head to bed.â
âIâm gonna do the same in a few minutes. Goodnight, doll.â
âGoodnight,â you tell him as you walk toward the doorway. You stop just below the doorframe when you realize that the throbbing in your head is gone. Soundlessly, you come up behind him.
âMy headache is gone,â you whisper, and then even softer, âThank you.â You press a chaste kiss to his cheek before exiting the room, leaving Bucky blushing in the dimly lit kitchen. He traces his fingers over the spot where you kissed him, grinning to himself and thinking about how tomorrow night canât come fast enough.
