I headcannon that Annie (1982) is one of Jason's favourite movies. Catherine found a copy in a bargain bin when he was a kid, and she would always watch it. It became this whole tradition that, whenever Jason or her felt a little sad, they'd pop it on and sing along to the songs off key.

Hounds of love
Summary: Jason wakes up from a bad dream, lucky for him he's got you to make him feel better. Based on the song Hounds of love by Kate Bush (and that post I made in april)
warnings: hurt/comfort, established relationship ,I think it's gender neutral but lmk if I missed anything.
wc: 1,5k
a/n: sorry for the --summarized-- psychoanalysis class lol (this has been in my drafts since april idk why I didn't post sooner)
Tumblr media
Jason had always yearned for love, any type of love he could get. Ever since he was a child, afraid and hiding in the dark cold streets of Gotham, he's always wanted to be loved- to be so full of love he wouldn't be able to take it anymore. But he's always been a coward, every time someone would get close enough he'd start fighting it, self-sabotaging as if he subconsciously knew he did not deserve it. His own father, his mom, his stepmother, Bruce, he'd been let down time and time again by the adults in his life supposed to protect him. If they couldn't give him what he wanted, love him, who could?
The dread, or rather the certainty he had over being unlovable shadowed over him, as much as he tried to push it down and pretend he didn't need it. His own biological parents left him, they never wanted him. The very people who were supposed to love him, he was their son. They brought him into this world, it was their responsibility. Then he'd say he didn't even like Bruce to begin with, who cares if he chose to adopt him? Who cared if he looked up to him so dearly once as a child? He had died under his care, Jason had almost everything he wanted and went ahead and ruined it-- all because he was too afraid to accept it, because he was too stubborn. You just had to go after him on your own, he'd blame himself.
Now he keeps having this recurring dream; he's being chased by something in some woods, and he keeps running. He wants to ask for help, he really does but his mouth won't open. Then he gets to a lake, takes his shoes off, throws them in the lake and takes two steps on the water. Some days that does it, he feels like the thing is no longer chasing him. But most days he wakes up before he can feel he's lost the thing chasing him.
Tonight he's holding a wounded fox in his hands, attacked by bigger animals, in the midst of escaping. The poor thing looks at him with kind, almost human, eyes. He feels its little heart pounding fast on its chest, the little animal feels familiar. He knows this fox from somewhere else. How else would it let him hold it? Why else would he stop running, too guilty to leave it alone? He feels ashamed of running away, but he has to. He's too scared to be there, he doesn't know what makes him so afraid to leave the poor animal on its own. None of this was real, there was nothing following him, he's never seen what's after him. So why couldn't he stay with the fox?
This night he wakes up sweating, agitated and with his heart kicking his ribs. He immediately kicks off the covers, and takes off his shirt when he feels the cotton starts to itch and stick to his skin. He knows he should try to calm himself down before he wakes you up, you had to be up in a few hours.
"Jay?" You slur, barely a whisper.
"Sorry my love," He apologizes, looking back to you rubbing your eyes "I'll go sleep on the couch"
"mmm, stay" you hum, still groggy with sleep but a hand of yours reaches out for him "bed's too cold"
He takes your hand in his before cuddling back next to you under the covers, limbs getting tangled together once again. And before he knows it he's got his head on your chest as you wrap your legs around him to keep him close.
"Where'd your shirt go?" You mumble, hands softly going across the expanse of his back.
"You complaining?" He teases to distract you and it works because you shake your head no with blushed cheeks. His hands sneaked under your clothes to hold you in a way that was almost a tradition now. He'd reach for your skin just to feel you there, to make sure you're safe and next to him and you weren't some hallucination he'd made up in his loneliness. If Jason had to he'd die and come again, crawling out of his coffin if it only meant he'd get to hold you like this one more time.
"Do you want to talk about it?" You ask
"About what?" He hums, too comfortable in your embrace to even be bothered with remembering what he was so stressed about.
"Why you are awake" There's a beat of silence after the sentence has come out of your mouth. The only thing that can be heard is the city's never-sleeping traffic in the distance. He doesn't want to burden you with something as measly as a dream, so what if it made him wake up in a sweat? It made no sense so he had no reason to be upset.
"Had a bad dream, wasn't really a nightmare..." He confesses after the silence." 's stupid go back to sleep"
"It's not stupid, tell me about it"
"Baby" He sighs, hoping he sounds pissed off enough for you to drop the subject.
"What? A dream can be your subconscious trying to get something you can't when you're awake"
"Mine must hate me"
"It doesn't, but it may want something youre not aware of"
"Since when do you know so much about dreams? Nerd" He teases, nuzzling his head to you. Realizing you're just as stubborn as him, he accepts defeat and tells you about his dream, "There's a thing chasing me and I'm running through some woods"
"What's the thing?" You ask
"I don't know" He scoffs, quick to dismiss it.
"Just think about it," You hike your leg higher up his waist and squeeze him closer to you if it was possible. "how did it feel?"
Tangling himself with you to the point where he can't tell where you end is where he feels like he can be vulnerable. Only when it feels like he might just become one with you he can let his guard completely down. So he sighs and takes a moment to do what you ask. He knows damn well what is after him, he's always known.
"Me, I think," He hides his face even further into your chest."my feelings"
You only hum in response, so he asks "Is it hard to love me?"
Now you understand where the dream came from. The moment he connected the thing chasing him with its meaning awoke an insecurity, something he was trying to keep buried down. So you waste no time in your reply.
"Loving someone has never come easier to me"
He finally lifts his head up, big blue eyes swelling up with tears. He looked so helpless but at the same time so full of devotion for you. He's loved, you love him, so it must mean that he can be. If he's deserving of your love, your selfless and pure love, then he's not unlovable. He kisses your jaw, and then your neck hearing a soft sigh of his name coming out of your lips. Knowing he's handed you his own heart in a silver platter, that he is yours to do as you please, Jason can rest at ease that you'd never harm him.
"Why do you ask?" You don't let yourself get distracted by his kisses.
"It's just that-" He sighs, maybe he can be vulnerable one more time with you. So he fights against the need to push you away and tries to find the right words "Don't think anyone's ever felt that with me, ever"
"Jay, your father became a henchman to provide for you," you point out, holding his face with both of your hands "Catherine raised you like her own, and believe it or not Bruce loves you, even if he's too emotionally constipated to show it"
He scoffs at that last part, blinking away the tears brimming his eyes, which, in your opinion, made them look shiny like a tainted glass panel in a church.
"Your older brother, loves you too, he calls me to see how you're doing every other week 'cause you won't answer him" You continue, "So does Alfred"
"Let's go back to sleep, okay?" He stops you; the sudden reality check is much more than what he could process at the moment. He's been so deep into his own thoughts, what he believed to be truth, that he didn't even bother to see it from a different perspective.
"You didn't even tell me what happened in your dream" You insist with a pout.
"I'll tell you tomorrow, I'm sorry I kept you up"
"I'm not" You smile, giving him a quick peck on the lips. A hand cups your cheek, making the kiss longer. You know that if he was on a better mood he would've said something along the lines of it not being a proper kiss. You giggle against his lips, and Jason just wonders how was he ever able to function without you.

More Damian Wayne headcanon
Because I can and this time is more about future(?) and batkids siblings and I'll also talk about some canon points, then please respect
Damian is not a Bruce clone, then he won't become a bodybuilder like his father when he grow up, but he will be more like Ra's and Talia side, something tall and elegant (and long hair like his grandfather)
Damian sees heritage as something very important, this is more on the cultural side than really a title, he is of Arab and Chinese descent so it is obvious that the issue of him being Batman's son and the devil's grandson is something important, no as a title but with cultural value and perhaps a curse
Look being Batman or Demon Head (I hate when DC is lazy and do this) is is for him a birthright, a duty as a member of that family and also a curse
I know Americans don't really understand the weight of this, but it's something of extreme cultural importance
So you can imagine what a funny thing it was when Dick stole the chair and now we have a Nightwing!Damian or whatever title the boy has brought for himself
if DC keep written Batman like that, I think Bruce and Damian's relationship will end up becoming "I still respect you, but I want distance" something worn similar to Dick and Bruce's relationship
Speaking of family relationships, Damian gives a lot of value and respect to family, just look at his relationship with his mother and grandfather, even his relationship with his cousin. They will fight to the death one day and the next they will be sitting around eating vegetarian food together
At this point I believe that stabbing a family member to see if they is worthy of staying in the family is an Al Ghul thing, Ra's started it as a big joke and they all continue it out of tradition and because it is also funny, one bonding family activity (Talia just never explained this inside joke to Bruce because she wants to annoy him)
Damian is an altruist and a lowkey suicidal (these two combinations together is what led to his death - he sacrificed himself for Gotham; and you can see it when he choice give his clone a sanctuary and also create a sanctuary for those kids in that tournament) and his family lives in fear of those events repet again
When adult he just don't give a fuck about Justice League, even when he is recognized as a great hero, Damian has no patience for any of them but he can helps if Jon, Kor'i or Connor Hawke ask for help if it's another hero, he'll say no
in the future Damian become the Jason Todd of the Al Ghul family
child and teen Damian talk about the cool older sister he has occasionally, much to the brothers' dismay, Bruce confirms the girl's existence, saying that Damian adopted her as a sister. The batkids meet Maya eventually
Occasionally Damian can also talk about his cool older brother from League but he refuses to elaborate this one
One night, when the batkids were gathered to eat a batburger, Duke asked as a joke how long it would take for Damian to adopt a child and this makes everyone relive unresolved childhood traumas. Duke just sits back and eats fries while enjoying the chaos, as now everyone is making calculations about the odds of this happening or not
when everyone finally calms down, Duke (again by pure menace) asks what kind of child Damian is most capable of adopting, and all the screaming and calculations starts again (Bruce lowkey traumatized everyone)
Tim says he (the kid) will be an assassin, so he (Damian) can save the child like Dick saved him. Dick says he (the kid) will be a little stalker who is charming the big hero. Jason calls them cowards because how sure are they that the child will be a boy and not a girl? And at some point they start debating whether the dead Robin's curse will follow these children
Duke Thomas has a good time that night
and now every member of the family has an emergency kit for the hypothetical child that Damian will adopt
Damian can use magic, but he never brings it up. The brothers suspect that he can - due to their blood heritage with Ra's - so they each (separately) have a contingency plan in case someone reacts badly to the fact that Damian knows how to use magic
Let's me explain: once they are all grown up, they don't want to go back to Damian's early days where a brother distrusts Damian in the house, individually they all understand that Damian is his own person and there is no reason to fight anymore, but they don't trust in the reaction between them (Bruce lowkey made everyone paranoid), so this contingency plan is in case "hey Damian can use magic, but now one of my brothers/Batman is mad at him again in the most nosense way, so I'm going to protect my little brother and not let This stupid member of my family hurts my little brother"
Dick reaction: "Oh this is actually more beautiful than I thought….but have you already talked about this with Bruce? He and Tim might react badly because of Ra's, so if you've already told them, we can leave the country until things calm down. Actually I have a spy friend who can help you, you like pandas, right?"
Jason reaction: "oh shit, oh shit, We have a problem now...I already told them that I'm injured and they will know that you healed me, so I want you to take my plane and go to Kor'i, I can talk to her on the phone, she owes me a favor then she will let you stay on her planet due to Bruce and the replacement's reaction because ...you know Ra's' paranoia"
Tim reaction: "I knew it! but I think now we have a problem, your father still have resentment about your grandfather then...take my keys and go to my house, I'll text Bernard about this don't worry, do you want me to pick up your pets?"
and things go this way (they most fear for Bruce bad reaction than anything else)
when kid Damian had the habit of sleeping with the sound of the Batmobile's engine, all the family members have carried him to bed more than once because of this
One night, when Damian is around 17~19 years old, Steph asks him to paint on her wall in her new apartment, in the end she gives him a ride back home and, to her surprise, Damian fell asleep on the passenger seat in the same way he always did as a child
This news made all the brothers always offer him a ride at night, Dick even bought an blanket exclusively for this (one time the baby brother is always the baby brother)
Some batkid headcanon: Damian || Duke || Cassandra || Stephanie || Tim || Jason || Dick

"#hey I have a serious headcanon that multiple of Gotham's elite were worried about or invested in Bruce's future#not even for court of owl reasons#but because he had the power and wealth to the alter the city the same way his parents did#falcone even tried killing him a bunch"
PLEASE talk more about this i'm begging. I want to hear all about this!!! Go into as much detail as you want but i'd absolutely read a 5k essay on this if you feel up to it
Though this isn't quite a 5K essay, you may come to regret asking lol. But I'm delighted to answer the question (thanks for asking):
Firstly, I guess to set up some Gotham lore, Gotham's a city of seemingly endless opportunity and is subject to constant power grabs. I think Black Mask once listed all the different factions that squabble over Gotham (street gangs, crime families et cetera). One of these groups is the Court of Owls (the society that secretly controls Gotham), made up of Gotham's oldest and wealthiest families.
And Batman comics make a point of repeatedly drawing attention to its key families, Kanes, Waynes, Elliots, Cobblepots (and the Arkhams too should you like to include them). There's an undue influence and importance they wield over the city.
But despite all the different forces that are competing to reshape Gotham in their image, it's the spectre of the Waynes that looms over it all.
This actually makes a lot of sense, since as some of the founders of the city, they were literally involved in creating the city's skyline and appearance. And then past that, there are so many instances and references to how Thomas and Martha (Kane or Arkham) were set on changing the city entirely (possibly a deviation from their more traditional ancestors).
This is the beginning of the loss of control for many others over the city (such as Gotham's wealthy and elite). Even smaller decisions, like Thomas' choice to save Carmine Falcone's life have major repercussions for the city.
The Waynes had a ton of power, buildings and institutions around Gotham hold their name. They were untouched by their potential criminal ties as they reconstructed the city, but it was clear that they were earning the hatred of a lot of powerful players. This includes the Court of Owls (historians still argue)/others, and if you're a fan of the TellTale game, it's clear that Bruce's family may have actually destroyed and usurped power from some of these other powerful families.
Regardless, Thomas and Martha's shocking deaths created a massive power vacuum that everyone would have jumped to take advantage of. And aside from gaining control over the city, all the old-money families would have wanted control over Bruce Wayne.
Because of the deaths of his parents, Bruce becomes a wildcard; he's the sole inheritor of Wayne Enterprises, all the money, power, and prestige his parents wielded. And in a way, it's almost like all the Waynes have some divine right/eldtrichy power over Gotham, by virtue of their fascinating blood line (or just their money).
So everyone would have been trying to control him/adopt him/use his access in the wake of trauma and exploit his age. When it didn't work, they likely all just settled into a stalemate of waiting for him to make moves so they could decide how much of a threat/ally he was.
In a comic I read (I'm sure there are other examples too, can't recall as I answer this), Carmine Falcone tries to kill Bruce Wayne via hired assassin, well after it's been established that nobody's even seen Bruce for a while. Carmine hears that Bruce could be at a party and sends an assassin with both a potent neurotoxin and a sword to ensure the job is done. So long after the deaths of his parents, these concerns of Gotham's warring factions continue.
And once Bruce starts acting on his vision for the city, one that aligns so well with Martha and Thomas' plans for Gotham, he likely cements himself as a threat yet again, and one that hasn't been schooled by his old-money parents in the games and underlying politics of Gotham.
So to continue on the line of thought that the tags came from: Regardless of what choices Bruce eventually makes -> I doubt that the Gotham elite wanted him making them without their influence
As a side note, because I'm kind of obsessed with the lineages that rule Gotham, if you look at Oswald Cobblepot, even as a crime lord descended from the Cobblepots, he's not just a street-level crook, but he also shapes the city.

please share your dick and bruce fic recs, both sad and fun stuff
–someone who thinks about them a normal amount
OHHH my friend my dearest friend i will totally share the best most crazy brainworm inducing bruce and dick fics i have ever read. i wish i was exaggerating when i say this dynamic changed me as a person, but it is the truth i fear. THE troubled father and son blueprint.
DICK AND BRUCE FIC RECS ON AO3
a pointless resistance by emavee
It starts with a news report running in the background of a greasy little diner, but it ends with Dick dead. Except, it doesn't stop there. It keeps on ending, over and over. Bruce's son keeps dying, and nothing he does seems to make any sort of difference.
MY NOTES: whenever i stumble upon an emotionally repressed individual i imagine a little cartoon person in my head shouting SEND HIM TO THE TIME LOOP because it truly does fix all problems. wonderful bruce and dick writing and the dialogue was so real to me i have tears in my eyes just thinking about it. it is also set during the robin jason era!
Making Time by CaptainOzone
Bruce does not remember anything leading up to this moment. He does not remember teaming up with Superman recently, nor does he remember being anywhere but Gotham proper. He does remember having Robin at his side. Robin, it turns out, is not there any longer. God does he hate magic.
MY NOTES: you'll notice a common theme with these recs and that is bruce needs to be having a horrible time and then is forced to confront his emotions and express them accordingly to dick. there is something very bittersweet about this yet it was handled so wonderfully. again, tears in my eyes.
Catch and Release by snackbaskets
There's a tradition among the family: when in danger, you grab the smallest Robin and hang on tight. But like all traditions, this one had to start somewhere, right? Alternately: three times Dick bodily attacks his father (with love)
MY NOTES: ohhh i think about the last part of this fic like all the time. something so sweet and precious about it to me. such a fun and comforting read.
Afraid of the Dark by WrongLeverKronk
The wind whispered outside his window and the dim moon failed to provide comfort. He was embarrassed. Richard Grayson sat on his bed, above the covers, with his arms wrapped firmly around his knees that were tucked against his chest. He thought everything would be fine when he parted from his friends for the evening, that his confidence would follow him in solitary. He regretted parting as soon as he turned out the lights in his bedroom and became enclosed by the eerie atmosphere. (Or: the aftermath of the episode in which Robin hallucinates Slade. He calls Batman)
MY NOTES: can u hear the sounds of me screaming crying sobbing. one of my first ever dick and bruce fics. fun fact i have never watched teen titans but watched this episode specifically just for fun and then read this and now it is seared permanently into my mind forever. anyways read this.
in the dark of the night by fanfictiongreenirises
“I already have a dad, y’know? So you don’t have to be my new dad. I don’t really want you to be my dad, anyway. We can be friends. Partners.” Bruce seems to sigh in relief, having stiffened up halfway through Dick’s speech. “Friends and partners, then.” And they were in agreement. Bruce and Dick and a series of steps and leaps and jumps.
MY NOTES: sometimes im okay and then i remember how many times dc COULD have made bruce adopt dick and DIDNT because they SUCK and so this fic is here to warm the hearts of all those who need it. so lovely.
After the Wake by nighhtwing (divineauthor)
Fathers should not bury their children. —•— When Jason dies, Dick comes home, and Bruce muses on being a parent.
MY NOTES: a shorter one, but man does it pack a real punch to the heart. i find bruce and dicks dynamic immediately after jasons death the most fascinating and this was a wonderful spin on it!
You Are My Reflection (As I Am Yours) by Fairy527
A rope snaps. A collective scream echoes in the tent. (A threatening low voice. A sinister metallic click.) The Flying Graysons fall, and Bruce is sent back to that fateful night in Crime Alley
MY NOTES: clutches my heart screaming OHH. OH THE PARALLELS. there is just something so personal about the night the graysons fell and the night the waynes died being referenced with one another AND THIS GOT IT SOOO WELL. tears. tears forever.
i can't promise (it's not written in the stars) by konan_konan
Batman is following him, surely, but he’s smaller and faster and he’s not going to let someone take him and lock him up again. Wayne Manor, he’s learned, is just another kind of prison. It may be big and fancy but it is also empty and cold and he’s not going back. Tony Zucco dies tonight, he tells himself. It is the only thing that matters. or: dick loses two soulmates, and gains three.
MY NOTES: oh this fic. i need a moment. soulmate aus can be a real hit or miss sometimes but the way it was portrayed in this literally surpasses all expectation it was just SO GOOD. the dick introspection is honestly one of my favourites like. ever.
In This or Any Other Universe by wildsofmarch
There was a new vigilante in his city: a man who smiled too much and talked too loud and knew his way around a fight a little too well. Bruce wasn't bothered by his antics. Except the man also seemed to know a little too much about him. Who was this Nightwing, anyway? ------ OR: Dick Grayson (DCU) accidentally lands himself in Battinson’s Gotham.
MY NOTES: here it is. my favourite bruce and dick fic of all time forever and ever. im so serious. the tears are not in my eyes because they are streaming down my face. the idea of battinson with a robin was lovely and now that this gives us battinson with NIGHTWING i am just inconsolable. MUST READ.

I have this Jewish Dick Grayson headcanon but I'm not Jewish so I was wondering if you'd give me feedback or something like that if it's not too much trouble. I imagine he'd be raised secular by his parents and when he starts living with Bruce he participates in Jewish traditions/holidays because Bruce uses his own family experiences to try and connect with his new kid. so Dick decides to fully lean into it and convert to Judaism. I think he'd have a Bar Mitzvah to formally show that, but Bruce didn't have any formal event for his because without his parents it's difficult. so when Dick gets to really celebrate his Bar Mitzvah it's a special moment of connection for them and Bruce is very proud. Dick becoming Jewish helped him reconnect with his mom after her death and it's all very sentimental. once again I'm not Jewish so I don't know if that makes sense
I'm always happy to talk Jewish batfam and i absolutely love when people share their HCs with me! :D I'm so flattered you reached out! If you mean you HC Dick as having a Jewish parent/parents, but just not being raised religiously Jewish, he wouldn't actually need to "convert". Judaism is an Ethnoreligion, aka: an ethnicity AND a religion, so you can be ethnically Jewish and not religiously, and vice-versa. It is enough to simply be born to Jewish parents (Mother if you're traditional, either if you're more reform). Conversion in Judaism is quite different from a lot of other religions, since Judaism is considered a "closed" religion. Gentiles (non-Jews) can convert, but the process is arduous and involves lots of study and communications with rabbis, etc.
If you mean raised secular in that John and Mary are both gentiles, but Dick ends up adopted as a kid by Bruce (a Jewish man), then he could be raised culturally Jewish, and might even be accepted as such in some Jewish communities depending on the denomination and such, but he would technically still need to convert to be "officially" Jewish.
A Bar Mitzvah does not count as a conversion, it's a separate, but very important coming-of-age ceremony that considers you a Jewish adult when a boy turns 13. It comes with responsibilities and practices, definitely something I love imagining Dick having, being supported by Bruce though, and reconciling with his past and such.
Tumblr media
For the sake of not making the worlds longest post, I'm putting the rest under the cut!
I'm totally a sucker for HCs of someone reconnecting to their religion, I'm also totally a sucker for Jewish HCs so you're totally in my wheelhouse! I absolutely invite you anytime to message me or anything cause I could go for days on this.
I wont dump my entire hoard of HCs on you, but yours are actually quite similar to some of mine!! I figured I'd share some ehe, no obligation to read it or nothin'
Bruce I HC to be Ashkenazi Jewish, on both Martha and Thomas's side. I imagine they were somewhat conservative (Masorti) Jewish, but Martha's extended family was Orthodox. I HC Bruce was raised pretty Jewishly until his parents were killed, and from then on Alfred, who is not Jewish, did his best to uphold the values and religion that Bruce's parents had left behind with him. Also, bc I always establish a latke Opinion for every Jewish HC I Have...Bruce would totally be a cream cheese and lox latke guy, bougie ass. As for a Bar Mitzvah for Bruce...I usually waffle between HCs of either
A) Bruce not doing a bar mitzvah celebration since there's many practices associated w the parents that he knew would be too painful, but as an adult he regrets not having one or might even do a belated one as an adult at some point with prodding from his kids
Or B) Alfred, knowing the importance of it, pushes Bruce to actually do it and tries his best to do the parental duties. It's sweet small and all that but still nice
As for Dick, I usually HC that his father John was Romani and his mother Mary was Jewish, born Miryam (Jewish name) but changed it to Mary to pass as gentile cause of the Antisemeitism. I HC her, and by extension Dick, as Sephardic rather than Ashkenazi (regionally different flavors of Judaism due to diaspora, very interesting to look up if you have time). Anyways, Bruce and Dick def had a "similar but different" motif about it but very wholesome. I think Dick still knew stuff and had a connection to it, but didn't like, attend services or anything pre-Bruce. He probably loved Purim, though. I imagine when Dick was young, he and Bruce would celebrate Shabbat together and light the candles every week. As for Latke pref...applesauce and sour cream at the same time on the same latke.
For Jason, I actually HC him as mixed race (afrolatino, white, etc) and raised Catholic, so pre-Bruce he didn't know anything about Judaism at all. I don't think he'd have crazy strong connections to religion of any sort, but he'd still have some adjusting to do. I think he'd participate culturally with the fam, doing Passover seders, playing dreidel, etc, but I don't think he'd be doing much praying or anything. Sour cream on Latkes truther, but he'll add pico de gallo sometimes if he's got it.
Now for Tim, I also HC as Jewish, but whereas Martha and Thomas were very outwardly Jewish, I imagine Tim's parents were not. In my hcs, Janet was raised conservative but sorta dropped it. Jack was raised reform and didn't really practice anything. I imagine they didn't want to broadcast a lot of their Jewishness out of fear it would impact their business, which they cared about more. Most of Tim's participation started and ended with the High Holy Days, or the occasional moment his parents ever rarely felt religiously inclined. Maybe some brief Hanukkah stuff, cause of the capitalism and whatnot. I think he would do a lot of his own research, though, and know enough to get by. I think he would also eat his Latkes with ketchup, bc he's bonkers.
Now for Damian, obviously he's half Jewish cause Bruce is his father, but Talia I HC as Muslim (can't remember how canon it is) and raising him practicing Islam I think makes him lean more towards that religiously even if he is ethnically both. He's interested in Bruce's culture, bc thats his dad! but not like, with spiritual intent at his age. I think the whole fam though is happy to celebrate Eid with him, support him fasting during Ramadan, etc, though! When Alfred makes Latkes though he prefers applesauce or plain, as most kids in my experience prefer.
ANYWAYS sorry this got WAY longer than I thought it would. I have more for the rest of the batfam and stuff but i'll stop here. Biggest HC dump EVER huh..anyways if you actually got to the end thanks for reading it! feel free to message me any questions or send another ask, clearly, I usually have something to say about it LOL

Assuring his son there is no pressure to date again so soon, Scott falls for the alpha much to Scott's siblings dismay. They all love Sam. They all want Sam to be part of the clan, not Steve. They will stop at nothing to let their brother and Sam recognize that they truly belong together.
Do you Realize (ao3) - stececilia sam/scott, bucky/m’baku M, 6k
Summary: Scott returns from Wakanda with some major news that will change the dynamics of the avengers pack.
in cayenne and honey, in vinegar and lime (ao3) - alby_mangroves, Nonymos bucky/m’baku, steve/bucky, m’baku/okoye E, 27k
Summary: M’Baku fought for T’Challa. But should he keep fighting for T’Challa’s vision? The king is professing change, such deep change, while the Jabari are supposed to be the guardians of tradition.
It’s a complex problem, which demands a cool head. So M’Baku could really do without an old love coming back to haunt him, an obnoxious royal teenager, and T’Challa’s secret one-armed guest.
Just as Stubborn and Strong Willed as Ever (ao3) - Marv_with_a_v T, 3k
Summary: When M'Baku is housebound after suffering an injury, Bucky discovers something he should have known all along: the Great Gorilla of the Jabari Tribe is the world's worst patient.
More From Every Moment (ao3) - BurdenedWithPointlessPurpose E, 3k
Summary: Just like all of M’Baku’s other short trips to visit T’Challa, the Alpha stays at his new apartment the night before so they can visit with each other before he leaves once more for Jabari Land. Visiting meaning fucking each other silly every moment they can manage to satisfy them while they are apart. Bucky appreciates every single second, secretly hoping they never come to an end despite how unorthodox their “not a relationship” relationship is.
my spirit swims right to the hook (ao3) - napricot bucky/m’baku E, 20k
Summary: “What’s this one?” asked Oson, poking at one of the kimoyo beads. M’Baku frowned down at it. He didn’t think the princess had offered an explanation of this one, at least, not beyond it offering a connection to the internet. Was this one for Wakanda’s internet, or the rest of the world’s? He toggled it on, and squinted as the unnecessarily bright hologram beamed up, proclaiming it to be Hathor’s List. A little message offered an explanation: let Hathor guide your search for a partner, not your elders’ matchmaking! Find a perfect match, or a night of pleasure!
Oh, that little brat, thought M’Baku.
The Boy is Mine (ao3) - stececilia maria/natasha, bucky/m'baku, everett/t'challa E, 9k
Summary: T'Challa and Everett have been dating in secret ever since the fight for Wakanda with Killmonger. Everett Ross is now stationed in Wakanda as the US-Wakanda Ambassador/Liaison which does help keep their relationship under wraps. Unfortunately, all that will be challenged when T'Challa is invited to join a gala at the White House for all new members of UN.
The challenge? Everett watching T'Challa with Nakia as his plus one when Everett wishes it was him. With the help of Maria Hill and her girlfriend they try and get Everett through the night but of course nothing goes smoothly.
Under the Guise of Friendship (ao3) - Marv_with_a_v T, 2k
Summary: Bucky gives M'Baku a present. Just because.
What did I do? (ao3) - Magicalmanda bucky/sam, bucky/m'baku T, 1k
Summary: Bucky learns new things about the 21st century. Sam and Steve learn about the after-effects of Bucky's torture.
Set in the unshown spaces of canon from civil war to tfatws
What Happens in Wakanda Stays in Wakanda (ao3) - Marv_with_a_v M, 98k
Summary: …or: that time Bucky and M'Baku gave friends with benefits a fair shot and discovered everything they needed in each other.

Son of the Demon:
I think one of the most interesting aspects here is actually the fact that it’s all about controlling the weather by satellite. Ra's, the ecoterrorist, is very interested in this technology.
It also yes is the comic that Grant Morrison failed to read, and I guess I'm going to dig out the aspects of the romance here. It's...fine I guess? Talia and Bruce are pretty clearly on different wavelengths about what actually constitutes a wedding (Bruce is very definite Ra's using old traditions does not count) and the comic wants to insist to me that Bruce has never ever ever had sex before this, which, okay, I don't believe you, but okay.
Let's run through the steps of Damian's putative conception (actually Ibn's conception, as this is not canonical except in the most handwavy of ways)
Tumblr media
Talia tells Bruce and Ra's she's pregnant! This whole story takes place in a period where Dick is not around. Of course, the timeline on this does not make sense but we don't need it to, this is explicitly non-canonical according to Denny O'Neil and I listen to Denny on things like timeline matters.
Tumblr media
To celebrate Talia getting knocked up, Bruce gives her a Meaningful Necklace.
Tumblr media
Then during a raid, Talia miscarries. Or 'miscarries'. Certainly, she thinks she's lost the pregnancy.
Tumblr media
Right before Bruce leaves to go back to Gotham (because he finally came to his senses enough to remember he doesn't actually want to be Ra's heir or hang around here) he has this conversation with Talia, who is still in the hospital bed, where she tells Bruce to leave. Talia then starts crying once Bruce has turned away. Over Bruce leaving? Over the situation she's in? Over the fact she may have just lied? It's never made explicit.
But the very next page we get:
Tumblr media
Oh look it's our lost heir Ibn, with his Meaningful Necklace accompanying him, being adopted out to a Nice Family (TM).
By implication, presumably Talia had a haemorrhage but didn't lose her pregnancy, or may have miscarried one of twins (hah! don't see anyone playing with THAT idea)
However (going to dip into Bride of the Demon for a moment), Talia clearly has some regrets because near the end of Bride of the Demon Talia pretty clearly is trying to psych herself up to tell Bruce a secret.
Tumblr media
Beloved...I never told you...what fully transpired at our last meeting...
Bruce says he's not ready to talk about it, but under the circumstances I am firmly of the view that Bruce would actually very much like to know that Talia did not correct his misapprehension that she miscarried their child. Anyway Talia uses this moment as a get out of free card and does not bring the topic up again, even though this story is hypothetically set goodness knows when after the previous story.
(Also Ra's knocks up his 'Bride' in Bride of the Demon and thankfully as this is non-canonical as far as I know we never hear of the outcome of this pregnancy).

bat royalty au where bruce wayne is the prince of gotham but is an antimonarchist seeking to set up representative government for his kingdom but knows there is too much corruption among the nobles for it to succeed yet. so he spends his time rooting out corruption and removing titles from corrupt nobles and deeding land back to the people. he is waiting for the moment it is safe, and when it is, gotham will become a representative democracy. to be clear, this at times sounds like he’s stalling, but he waits partly because his parents were killed by monarchists for ceding too much power away from the throne and breaking traditions etc. it threw the country into chaos for years, and he’s trying to keep war from breaking out.
he also micromanages his relationships to prevent having a “true heir” recognized by gotham nobility. but he cares about children too much not to adopt ones in need. so then when they get older he has to micromanage their relationships to avoid them having any relationship that could count as a political alliance that would give the wayne ‘bloodline’ too much power to monarchists who want to maintain the throne.
…which doesn’t seem to be so hard, until his eldest son falls in love with a princess. and his third son falls in love with the cousin of the lost prince of krypton. and when it turns out he has a blood heir, despite trying to take every precaution against one.
(notes: jason is killed in this one when bruce is on the verge of dissolving the monarchy. but it’s clear jason would just be the first of many deaths to follow; gotham nobility still is to corrupt and has too much power, and would truly start a war and force a tyrant onto the throne. the only way to keep gotham safe is for bruce to continue to lead it and continue the slow work of removing threats and boosting the people’s living conditions, education, and political rights)
(i’m also entertaining the idea of kory being an unknown princess serving as a maid in wayne manor for a time to look out for political information on the state of the world. she seeks refuge in gotham specifically for its anti monarchy sentiment, as her sister betrayed kory and their people and sold her into slavery. she escaped and fled to gotham to plan a rebellion and take back her people’s freedom. funny enough, bruce supported dickkory in this au when he thought kory wasn’t royalty because no one could claim royal blood in dick’s descendants if he married a maid. but alas she’s a princess. kory reassures him eventually that she wants her people to be liberated too, and would like them to have self-determination so they’re never at the mercy of a dictator or foreign powers, like her sister or the gordanians, ever again.)
yes this is all on one planet in like a 1700s-ish era. yes i just binge watched bridgerton. what about it.

I LOVE THIS.
except.
Aside from Dick (who went behind Bruce's back & ended up being Robin just so he'd have Supervision because One Does Not Attempt To Babyjail An Acrobat) and Damian al'Ghul... none of the Robins were active when any younger than 13 when they started, at MINIMUM.
The "canon" ages are Very Muddled, given all the RetCons & Certain Writers Having No Sense Of Scale... but the WHOLE POINT of Bruce becoming "Batman" can be simplified to: "babyproof Gotham City".
While, yes, EVERY Robin would have snuck out in their Predecessor's costume at some point, the only batkids who could consistently Escape Bruce AND Alfred? Dick, an Actual Escape Artist, and Damian, Literal Ninja. Cass could, technically, but Babs had "custody" when she was still child-sized. I don't see Alfred or Bruce letting multiple escapes happen, not until they'd trained the newest kid &/or they'd already "babyproofed" the crimescene (something i imagine was true of EVERY Robin's first few patrols anyway, when possible).
The First "Era" of Batman was against Organized Crime, Rampant Corruption, & Hopelessness. The only "real" supervillains were Eccentric Crimelords like the Penguin & Rogues like Selina. It was relatively "safer" for Dick to be at Batman's Side than alone in Gotham at Night: Batman was a Cryptid, Bruce's tech was FAR more advanced than anything the gangs had packing, stealth & pre-preparation meant opponents were almost always taken by genuine surprise.
This "First Era" of Batman was when Bruce, Gordon & Harvey Dent were working together (with "The Bat" helping things along) to "Reform Gotham" from being Mob-run & Corrupt from the Top Down & Bottom Up... to something Vaguely Competent. This is when the "most" change happened for Gotham City: the Gangs were disarmed, ousted and uprooted from running the City, civilians could try Actually Trusting each other again, and the vast majority of Gotham's unchecked Chaos was either Given Better Options or "Scared To Behave". Gotham was still dangerous and corrupt but reforms were happening, more legitimate jobs came up, the cops had someone to be Accountable to (still corrupt but now they had to WORK for it instead of it being assumed by default), etc. This is all "alleged" history rather than Canon but it's the general "shape" required to mark pre-Batman Gotham from "Gotham with Bat Cryptid" and enable things like Gordon becoming Police Commissioner, "Batman" continuing to exist at all (due to affecting Actual Change), and the dissolvement of the "Traditional" Gang-ruled Gotham of The Penguin & Bruce's childhood.
...so that Harvey Dent becoming "Two-Face", and the Second Era of Cryptid-tactics being used by BOTH "sides", can be as personal and scary for Gotham as a whole. Things had been Getting Better: Bruce fears he's only made things Worse, other people Become Inspired (by Two-Face, Gordon or The Bat; by all three). Babs becomes Batgirl. The Gotham Central comics start happening. Bruce starts doubling down on building an "Alter Ego" for Bruce Wayne, the slightly less corrupt cops now Aware of The Bat & hunting him (the Rich Idiot Act also serves as a "buffer" to prevent Bruce from allowing anyone to get "too close", believing he'll Doom them by Association).
The "Second Era" is the beginnings of New Types of Criminals: Manbat, Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze, The Riddler (who is legitimately scary as an Unknown this early on), The Joker but in his "pre-Miller" incarnation. Supervillains that aren't quite "Super Villains" yet, just Sad Backstories Gone Wrong (but not TOO wrong) and Ridiculous Copycats.
I headcanon that Dick gets adopted around this time, while the "villains" are still "normal humans who would take any Out given to them". Gotham is dangerous but Not For [Lucius Fox]: money & tech still give Bruce a huge edge over everyone else, even Gotham's metahumans (after some initial failures while figuring out their limits). Dick won't let himself be kept safely in Wayne Manor & he is a LITERAL Escape Artist so trying to keep him in Baby Jail is Futile. Bruce is also more confident in his ability to keep A Child safe, he's getting an idea of how Scary this 12 year old can be without Bruce supervising. Bruce recognises Dick's anger but, unlike Bruce, Dick has the strength & agility to actually back him up: Dick can actually hurt people, something that Bruce couldn't manage until he'd started Training for it. So Dick gets to be Robin, kept in check by Batman & humbled by seeing that very little of Batman's "crimefighting" involves physical violence. It's mostly smoke & "mirrors": stealth, gathering intel, sabotaging ahead of time, using better tech, scaring & Showing Up when someone calls for help.
The time between the Second Era & the Third has things starting to become More Dangerous as Dick & Bruce start butting heads about what "Robin" is allowed to do. Dick sees the [Second Era] as a time of Wacky Villains & smalltime mooks in between Serious Challenges. Bruce sees this [Era] as "Batman" becoming less effective as he loses "Cryptid" Status. The main reason Bruce started dressing up as a Bat and only showing up at night was because he was trying to prevent senseless violence: fear was effective because most criminals were only trying to survive & weren't really committed to "being villainous". Batman getting clocked as "Dude in Cape" meant Bruce was having to PHYSICALLY fight crime, the element of surprise lost & less mooks fleeing at first provocation. Dick leaves. Jason goes for the Batmobile's tires. Bruce ends up with a second kid. It's still the Second Era but, as it nears it end, things get increasingly more Tense: Bruce & Dick aren't Speaking, Bruce is becoming more Paranoid, Jason is a sweet kid, the Rogues start feeling "safe"/familiar enough with the "routine" (Arkham Asylum isn't GREAT but it's better than Prison: the unique needs of metahumans are still being learned, stays there can be too long oe too short, identifying those who need Asylum & would take it is an ongoing process).
Then Joker breaks out of Arkham Asylum. He tortures the Gordons. The extent of his obsession with The Bat is revealed.
The Joker murders Jason: it's the Third Era and it's AWFUL.
Bruce Does Not Cope: he micromanages, he "works alone", he never "stops" Being Batman.
The Bat regains Cryptid Status. It's not just amateur crooks and would-be mooks scared by The Bat anymore: Bruce is scaring civilians, the 9-5'ers who have follow "The Code" (e.g. keep it profressional, don't use lethal force if you can avoid it, DO NOT MESS WITH KIDS), the Rogues he's developed some rapport with (Selina, Harley, Riddler), Alfred & Lucius & Gordon.
People who "Knew" Batman as someone/thing that Does Not Like Senseless Violence, who gives Second Chances and Alternatives... they do not recognise this new, reckless and violent and ANGRY Batman/[Bruce].
I don't think Gotham "at large" was ever aware enough of The Robins even existing, not this "early" on. Those who Met One would "keep the secret/to the Code": professionalism, discretion, softening their punches. Most would never have noticed a Robin was there: the Batfam primarily operate in the SHADOWS, after all. There were Rumours, naturally, but who listens to anything said by The Joker? The ones who'd bring up Batman having a kid were The Wrong Sort (not following The Code, known associates of Gotham's Worsts) or "Liars". It's only the Escalation from Joker and the other Worsts of Gotham, of Batman's reciprocating that Escalated Violence, that makes Gotham's Underbelly start dreading that those Rumours might be true: the Bat had had a kid, a kid who was sweet and cracked jokes, a kid who wasn't just murdered but tortured too.
Batman's renewed Cryptid Status comes in the wake of the Dead Robin rumours: the Robin was the Batman's "conscience"; the Bat is Gotham ITSELF, come to the cries of her children; the Robin was an Orphan who summoned his Father from Hell itself and, with his child dead, there was no one to send the Demon back.
The Third Era has a drop in standard crime but a ramping up of Terror: Tim, Steph and Bab's Birds of Prey step up in response. Bruce Does Not Take New Kids Well. He is awful to Steph, furious with Tim (Babs is one of the few Bruce feels has "Understood" how Gothan has Changed: her business is her own, so long as her at know not to "interfere" with Gotham on their own).
Tim is too tenacious, too ambitious, too stupidly capable of matching wits against Bruce at his Worst: Bruce takes him in but REFUSES to put Tim in a Suit ("Robin" is completely off limits) until he was Not A Child (15+) and Bruce had TRAINED him.
Even with Tim's age going up & down according to the writer, the Mythos of Batfam in this "Third Era" does not allow for Bruce to ever put anyone younger than 15/16 in the "scope" of the Joker or his other Enemies (Bane seems very Third Era). Cass is an anomaly, wherever she fits between Jason & Tim, due to how immediately she & Bruce were able to "understand" each other. It helps that she was ALREADY more physically skilled than Bruce & had demonstrated complete mastery of non-lethal combat. The nature of Cassandra's life had her "involved" with the Dark Underbelky of the World long before she even arrived in Gotham... and, all that aside, it was Babs who "took her in" anyway.
The "Fourth Era" would be Batman "having a Robin again": it's a relief for Gotham as a whole. Bruce (& thus Batman) is still VERY paranoid and more Terrifying than he ever was with the First Robins... but Tim's presence does "stabilize" him.
(This only furthers the Bat Cryptid "leashed only by Child" Rumours: Oracle gladly adds to them in service of the Bat Agenda)
The Fourth Era is when Supervillains become "normalised", identified as People in Suits to the masses & something any member of the Batfam has become Trained to "Handle". Most of the Rogues have been caught more than once, their weaknesses have been Noted, there are Protocols ready for almost everything. Gothamites get yearly "fear toxin" boosters, schools & workplaces have Drills for "Metahuman Events" (& Emergency Lockdown systems for Arkham Escapes, courtesy of Wayne Enterprises). Thimgs are, once again, "settling" into a New Normal.
Gotham is still more dangerous than most cities, it's also been Recognised as differently dangerous: it's rare for Outsiders to 'try their luck" by "playing hero" in Gotham, Nightwing is the "official" point of contact for any Capes or Metas expecting to be in Gotham & everyone likes Nightwing.
(Oracle is a new Cryptid: a Recognised Authority for Gotham but of Unknown Connection to it, her Birds largely operating Outside of It)
Overall, Gotham is "better" than it was pre-Batman: it's only unofficially run by Crimelords now and only half of its authorities are "Probably Corrupt"! The Bat himself is more "stable": Bruce has begun reconciling or otherwise making silent ammends to those he's alienated, he's regained SOME ability to "Trust" (his Family, some friends). Bruce knows he has never really "worked alone" (Alfred, Lucius, Leslie, Gordon) and that he needs help, that he has it: he has something of a Work/Vigilante/"Life?" Balance again.
Jason Coming Back is Fifth Era.
Bruce & the Batfam are still working things out, being prone to falling out all over again (Dick has resolved to never "abandon" his Dad again, taken up the role of "Peacemaker") and the "Red Hood" gives everyone has at least one existential crisis (at minimum). Damian showing up just as the they're understanding that Jason Is Alive and Mad About It... does not help.
Idk if Bruce faking his death is still canon? That's the "endnote" of Fifth Era.
Sixth Era starts with the "Batman" mantle being taken up by Dick, Kate & Cass. Whether Bruce is genuinely dead (to then get resurrected) or just "missing" depends on which arcs you'd consider "canon". I barely recall the explanation given at the time for Bruce Playing Dead to his entire family, just when it had finally "reunited" (largely through Attempted Murder but pssht DETAILS).
Seventh Era is the present: Bruce is Batman, the Robins & Batgirls have "graduated", the Batfamily is a Family (even when they fight, they protect each other & revere Alfred). Organized crime, supervillains & metahuman events in Gotham have become Slice Of Life events for the Batfam: there's more of them than ever, they have multiple Point persons, they know how to work together, they know their own limits & when to call for Backup (except Bruce but his Kids have figured out how to "compensate" for the Batdad's Paranoia/Lack of Self Preservation/Overprotectiveness: Jason is the Best at this, obviously).
Gothamites during the Seventh Era have Adapted to seeing Grown Up Robins out in the Daytime; the "Cryptid or Very Dedicated Dad?" discourse continues, actively encouraged by Said Robins (consensus from Gotham At Large is split between those that consider Batgirls to be "Robin" figures, generally a position held by those most familiar with [Babs] &/or [Steph] while other views have [Cass] &/or [Kate] as alternate forms that the Bat Cryptid can take). Duke joins the family.
"Seventh Era" Bruce is Renewed in his dedication to combating crime before it happens by addressing its causes: affordable housing, unemployment, rehabilitation, discrimination against ex-cons, accessible healthcare, conflict resolution training by emergency services, etc. Bruce lets himself "retire" his Rich Idiot mask to further his philanthropy, the extended Wayne Family all onboard & leading different avenues of reform. Older Gothamites become Nostalgic, recalling Bruce's parents & the still-active Dr Leslie.
The "Veterans" of Gotham's Criminal Underbelly are Nostalgic over having a "Tiny Robin and Bat Cryptid" active again. The "Code" is not onlu adhered to but internally enforced: The Bat's Madness at the loss of its Robin is still too recent, injuries still newly healed, sentences only recently completed. That there are Multiple Robins and Multiple Cryptids, all of them terrifyingly protective of each other... one of the first things taught to any prospective gang member is "kids are off-limits, even Robins: ESPECIALLY Robins!". Self-defence is fine, expected, but Certain Weapons & Certain Acts of Violence? If the Cryptids h
don't get you, a supervillain or other gangs will. It's the unorganized crime that Gothamites are most wary of.
The scariest word a wannabe-bad guy can hear in Gotham is "Dad/Baba/Father". Any of the Robins might do it. Some of the Cryptids do it. If you hear a child calling for their parent? It's Surrender or Play Dead: hearing that word means They (the Cryptids, Nightwing, the Robins, Batgirl, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Two-Face!) will end you. You will wish they would just "kill" you (the Ghost Robin or the Rogues just might).
I split Batman's "Career" into "Eras" because it's a way to Mentally make Past & Current "canon" internally consistent... give or take an anachronism.
Dick was anywhere from 10 to 12 when he became Robin but it was also the Era where Batman was Mythic, his Tech outmatching most everything Gotham could offer, where No One Was Expecting A Child Ninja (Dick was an internationally acclaimed gymnast: that reads like "ninja" to the unprepared).
Jason and Tim were older (14-16) but both could easily read as "younger" due to the Cryptid Nature of Batman by that time, their only showing up at Night, kids looking Younger the Older you get, the bright colours of their suits, the stealth & social tactics used by the Batfam as a whole.
I REALLY like how this idea of "[Bat]Dad" can fuel Gotham's Underworld paranoia in their ongoing efforts to figure out "Batman": an urban legend, "Gotham Personified", "Cryptid?", dude dressed like a bat, "vampire?"... all the way to "Cryptid Parent summoned from Hell by Children of Gotham, the Robins, who are the Only Beings capable of putting the Bat Demon back to Rest".
Especially if this "mythology" is started independently of any rumours of The Batman that Bruce was TRYING to proliferate & gained traction with every addition to the Extended Batfamily (official and otherwise). Bruce can't even "get mad" about how his myth has changed because, at its core, Bruce's "Motive" for being Batman can be "summed up" as... [babyproof Gotham for every future generation].
So my Batfamily brain rot is back (not that it ever really left) and I just had a thought like…
If you’re a henchman/criminal in Gotham, seeing your life flash past your eyes is gonna be a somewhat regular occurance but… what if like… the thing that truly made a henchman’s heart fall to his ass was when they hit Robin just a little too hard and this 10 year old kid just starts crying and goes ‘Daaaaaadddd!’
That’s the moment when they truly think they’re going to die because said dad, the kid is calling for is a 6’6 demon from hell who’s all muscle and shadows and vengance and a lot of Gotham still thinks he’s a cryptid
The henchmen all drop their guns and try to calm the kid down but it’s over in 5 seconds flat. Batman breaks several bones before speaking to Robin in the softest voice they’ve ever heard him use and the criminal world, who was already a bit hesitant to fight a kid have even more reason to take it just a little easy on Robin.
And like, I can picture different reactions with every Robin.
Like, for Dick, he’s ten and we all know he was the most violent Robin second only to Damian so maybe when he’s ten or eleven and has calmed down a little, a henchback who still remembers what a little shit he used to be decides to get back at Robin, slips on a pair of brass knuckles and BAM
And then, little Dick just stares for a moment in shock, cheek already starting to bruise, the criminals he’d been fighting all stay still because it was a nasty punch and then…
“Daaaaad!!!” He cries out in a whiny voice that reminds them that Robin really is just a kid and it all clicks into place.
Even Bruce wasn’t expecting that, Dick has just started calling him dad and he still isn’t used to being called that so to hear his kid calling for him in the moment where he is startled and hurt and a little scared… the henchmen don’t even have time to react and they wake up in the hospital with concussions and maybe a few broken bones.
It doesn’t take Dick long to calm down, it was mostly that the hit from a random henchmen really startled him and got him right in the cheekbone. But Bruce still finishes patrol early and Dick still hides under Bruce’s cape all the way to the Batmobile.
Then comes Jason and Jason was such a sweet kid, I headcannon he was the one that called Bruce dad the most often while being Robin. So one night during patrol maybe he finds himself fighting Penguin or Two-Face and it’s been a long night and he has an exam the following day and Bruce is fighting another villain at the other side of the warehouse
The point is, the henchmen and Two-Face start landing hits on eleven year old Jason in his gut and at some point he loses sight of Batman fighting on the other side of the room. Jason gets scared because he’s never really fought without Batman and while he knows that Bruce is still in the warehouse, he can’t see him and the handle of a gun hits the back of his ankle and he falls and he sees Two-Face or Penguin or one of the henchmen getting ready to grab the front of his uniform and beat him up and…
“Daaaaddd!”
The criminals freeze for a moment. They’ve heard the stories of what happened the last time a Robin called scared for dad.
They’re fucked.
They all drop their guns and try to get Jason to calm down, but he’s crying just a little bit and calls again, his voice breaking and despite having been at the other side of the warehouse just a second ago, Bruce somehow drops from the ceiling and it’s over before the criminals can keep pleading with Robin to calm down.
Jason tries to apologize for ‘acting like a baby’ but Bruce is having none of it and carries him back to the Batmobile and Jason is happy to just hide his face in Bruce’s cape because he knows his dad will always be there to save him.
Then comes Tim.
And Tim gets found out while doing reconnisance and somehow he finds himself face to face with Bane who manages to wrench away his bo staff and Tim is just eleven and he is scared because Bane doesn’t look like he’s going to hold back
All Tim knows is that the crack he hears must surely be his ribs either cracking or breaking and he can’t breath and he can only muster enough air for a single word… and he calls for his dad through tears and fear
And at this point… at this point Batman has already lost a Robin, Tim may not be his legally but he is his son just as much as Jason was
Bane spends a month in the ICU
Tim is embarrased that he reacted like that. He thinks it makes him less of a Robin to called scared for Batman… for dad.
So Bruce tells him of the other two times it happened. It’s one of the first times he’s spoken about Jason to Tim so bluntly.
Then comes Stephanie.
Stephanie never calls Bruce dad when she’s Robin. She’s not his daughter and he’s not her dad. They’re not sure what exactly they are to one another.
As far as Bruce knows, Stephanie’s version of Robin never called out to him when she was scared.
What he doesn’t know is that it did happen. Just once
It was the last time she was Robin. When Black Mask had her and she thought she was going to die
At some point while bleeding and feeling nauseous and so scared she could barely hear anything that wasn’t her own heart beating wildly against her chest… she called for dad. Not for Arthur Brown, but for Bruce
Black Mask laughed at her
Stephanie never tells Bruce
And finally… Damian
Now, we know Damian would probably never be startled enough to call for Bruce out of instinct, so I can see 2 scenarios in which this could happen.
First, he sees another kid do it. He sees a kid close to his own age laughing and playing, then tripping and staying quiet for a split second before crying out for mom and dad and he just… assumes that’s something kids do when scared and hurt and startled and does it mostly in an attempt to be a little more ‘normal’
Or, my favorite scenario… he hears of the other times it has happened. He overhears maybe Dick remind Jason of what Bruce did when Jason called out to dad as Robin. Tim maybe jokes that a Robin calling for dad is still the villains’ greatest fear
So Damian stores that knowledge away as a battle strategy just in case he ever needs it… and maybe a small part of him wants to put it to the test, to see if his father would protect him as brutally as he’s protected the Robins before him
So some random night during patrol, he’s up against several henchmen, a few of them grab him from behind, trying to hold him down. Damian is fighting against them when one of them swings a cylinder of metal that Damian thinks might’ve been meant for the plumbing and…
The henchman breaks Damian’s nose, there’s blood dripping down his chin and staining his uniform
Now… it is most certainly not the first time he’s broken something, he’s more than used to the pain, in fact, he barely feels it. However, it gives him a chance to put his little theory to the test
And so Damian allows himself to sound like the ten year old that he is and in a whiny, teary voice, goes… “Babaaaaa!” (Bonus points if it’s the first or second time he’s called Bruce baba instead of father)
What Damian didn’t take into account though, is that Batman and Robin aren’t the only ones on patrol that night. They made a big bust. The biggest part of the operation was over but they were still fighting a few stragglers. The whole fucking family is here.
And they all hear his cry.
Damian doesn’t think he’s ever seen a fight end so quickly. The henchmen only have a split-second of surprise before vanishing, being tackled or shot or having knives buried on their shoulders by his siblings.
The one that actually broke Damian’s nose is being beaten up by Nightwing, Damian doesn’t think he’s ever seen Grayson so angry.
A shadow kneels in front of him, father. Baba. He’s checking Damian and Todd is right at his side, both speaking in hushed tones, checking his injuries and wiping the tears that usually came with a broken nose.
And now… Damian is used to his father and Grayson treating him like a child, trying to be as soft as they can with him. Even Cain does it to some extent.
But… having Drake wrap an arm around him, calling him baby when knocking out one of the criminals that had hurt him ‘that’s my fucking baby brother!’ and continue to hold him later into the night on the couch, having Brown willingly give up all the snacks she keeps in her utility belt and promise to take him to Batburger the following day for milkshakes because he was ‘a champ’. And Thomas wraps his favorite blanket around Damian while they’re fixing him up.
Todd decides to stay the night at the manor. Which he never does. They all decide to spend the night at the manor when Damian still sniffles on the Batmobile and they have breakfast all of them together. Which Damian isn’t sure has ever happened before and Cain gets Alfred to make pancakes with chocolate chips instead of blueberries.
They call him baby in hushed whispers but for once, it doesn’t bother him even though it really should
But most of all, Bruce refuses to let him go for a good five minutes after he first cries for him. Smoothing down his hair and whispering that it’ll be okay and just being soft in a way Damian has never seen before.
He sleeps between his Baba and Grayson and he knows that Todd and Drake and Cain check in on them at least twice in the night for some reason.
And he realizes it’s… it’s nice. Maybe this really could be an effective battle strategy to be employed again someday.

Wayne Girls AU, that was Bruce with Rachel and Janis. Especially Rachel.
Grown man had to hype himself up when it was time to lay down the law. Couldn’t stand to have any of them be upset with him. Alfred had to stand guard to make sure he didn’t go back on any of his groundings.
Diana getting a crash course in Girl Dad™️ when Batman had to lecture Robin. The man was close to sobbing into his hands after Robin ran out of the room crying “You’re breaking my heart, Daddy.”
Diana: You’re the parent, is it not normal to discipline one’s child?
Bruce: You don’t understand, she’s mad at me. She won’t want to talk to me now.
Diana: I see, so men are the weaker parent.
Bruce taking Cosmetology classes when he first gets Rachel to make sure that he’s able to do her hair. Brucie Wayne might be a ditzy himbo but his little girls are gonna be rocking the cutest hairstyle anytime they leave the house. Braids, updos, ponytails, bows, clips and ribbons he has it all mastered.
Bruce buying those child alarms that are popular in Japan for all of his girls when they first start as Robin as a precaution. They all get a case of bedazzled pepper spray for a gift at least once.
Bruce having a slight fear of when the girls decide to band together for a common goal that’s not for the greater good. Either he’s gonna get played, someone will have their self esteem destroyed, half a city will be on fire, someone will get robbed, and/or all of the above.
Bruce joking that Carter is his favorite cause he finally has a bro to talk to in the house. But really it’s cause Carter won’t roast him as maniacally when he does or wears something corny.
While all the Robins are quick witted and can talk smack, Janis was the most vicious one. She never lets anyone get the first or final word, any kind of fight she made sure to win, always making sure no one saw any weakness. She was a literature/theater nerd she had a talent with prose and word play.
Though it was never directed at anyone she viewed as defenseless or vulnerable. She tried to be the symbol of strength and protection that Robin was to her.
Tabitha being the best liar of the whole family, cause that’s just how kids with strict parents grow up to be. Can and has gotten away with lying to Superman. Could probably get away with murder but won’t cause then she’ll let Rachel down. Struggles with living up to the image of being a “Good Girl” and her actual thoughts, wants, and needs. Janis jokes that Beth’s anxiety and people pleasing issues are the only things keeping her from taking over the world.
Rachel having conflicted feelings of being settling down and having a family. Not wanting to be tied down so soon but being worried she’ll miss her window. Unsure if she’ll be willing for perform any more emotional labor for more people especially since some days it seems like her sibling will always need her on speed dial. Flip flopping between adopting or wanting to experience pregnancy.
Dami growing up with love advice that basically sums up to “Communication is key” and “Dump him” but each sister was a different interpretation for each situation that she might as well just flip a coin. Janis, a true Jane Austen die hard, maintaining that romantic outlook for her Mister Darcy but is sadly less self reflective than Lizzie.
Alfred being worried that none of the girls will have a traditional wedding but still having a dream wedding journal for each one if the time ever came. He’d be a terrifying drill master to make sure the day went perfectly but it’s all with good intentions.
Bruce having no conscious desire for grandkids cause his babies should stay his babies. But once he gets that first grand baby it’s like he fell in love all over again. All his grandkids are his best friends and he’s their “Grand B/Paw Paw/Grandaddy.”
Sorry I've had this saved in my ask forever bc I keep rereading it because it's always so much Fun when someone engages with your dumb, indulgent AU.
Bruce is, at the same time, both a stricter but also more permissive parent with the girls. You're So Right that he hates when they're mad at him and dotes a bit more on them than he did with the boys. But at the same time he is bound and determined not to make a big deal of the fact that he has daughters, that they're just as capable as sons. He stood up so much for Rachel when she first started as Robin, justifying her skills and making sure no one thought less of her. For all the fights and struggles the kids have with B over the years, they never forget that he supports them 100% and never treats them as less.
I also love exploring the relationship each of the Robins has with their femininity. Rachel came to the Manor way more girly, she was used to parading around the circus in dresses and with pretty accessories. Growing up the adopted daughter of a wealthy billionaire, not to mention becoming the first young sidekick, not to mention female sidekick, made her dial back to be take seriously. Plus as she grew into a beauty it soon became uncomfortable at times to express herself that way. Janis was a Tomboy and saw it as a weakness which is just another point of contention when Beth comes in as (seemingly) a sweet princess. Beth was raised to be a pretty, thoughtless thing so her combining her rougher, more practical side with the fun frivolities of being feminine is about her claiming herself and not what others want to make of her. By the time Dami comes along, there's a whole spectrum and femininity around and she's able to decide what amount works for her.
Tabitha is the first to marry but Janis is the first to have (ie adopt) kids and Bruce, who was so stoic with his kids, just melts for his grandkids. He loves his daughters so much, respects them but also fears them bc of how capable they are a) as vigilantes and b) at manipulating the hell out of him. Beth will turn on her big sad eyes, Rachel will shyly twirl her hair, Dami will bite her lower lip and he will do Anything. The JLA makes fun of him but they're not much better when the Bats use their evil powers on them.

Unasked for Batfam Headcanons
Because I have no impulse control.
The dead robin club ended because people kept joining. At first it was Jason and Steph's inside joke and then Damian and Dick died and it took the fun out of it. Also they always felt bad for excluding Cass (as she wasn't a Robin but Shiva has canonically killed her twice) because Cass is a part of the family dammit.
For this reason, groups that formed after the dead robins club also fall a bit flat. Dick once made a joke about him and Bruce being in amnesia club and everyone proceeded to collectively lose their minds because no one wanted to be next.
Now they just hang out and call it a girl's night (literally even when it's just the boys). It started as actual girl's nights led by Barbara that various boys would crash and then they just kept the name when hanging out with literally any family member(s).
Tim: oh sorry Steph, I'm hanging out with Jason and Dick for a girl's night.
Steph: that's okay, I'll be content to have Cass and Damian for our girl's night then.
Girl's eventually becomes code for, we're going to sit in the bathroom and have mental breakdowns together.
Bruce does not understand girl's night reference, but he has painted both Cass's and Steph's nails while ranting about the JLA sooooo
Dick and Tim organize a family bonding camping trip to mirror team bonding they did with the teen titans and young justice
It goes suprisingly well and becomes a yearly family tradition
Alfred gets the weekend for vacation because Bruce is a competent adult when he's in the wilderness - he can cook anywhere but an actual kitchen
Mostly because he takes directions extremely literally (not even going to lie, this is something I did), for example the first time he was asked to microwave a can of soup, he didn't take the soup out of the can. And of course if you nearly blow up the microwave once, no one lets you near it again.
Who ever taught Bruce how to forage for food in the wildlife just showed him how it was done and pointed out the specific visual cues.
Meanwhile an 8 year old Dick just asked him to microwave a can of soup. And Bruce did what he was told.
In other news, they learned after the first year that no one is sharing a tent with anyone.
Sleeping with your siblings is fun and games until someone has a nightmare (which is unfortunately common in the family).
They also learned Duke can make campfires look absolutely wild through manipulating the light.
They literally just stared at a fire for 3 hrs while he messed around.
Duke was then invited to the titans and young justices campouts because Dick and Tim were like omg Wally and Bart need this in their lives.
This does in fact spiral out of control, and random heroes that Duke has never met know him as the fire kid.
Oh and not like earth heroes - they know who Duke is. I'm talking like light years away some random alien hero found out through the grape vine that Starfire's ex-boyfriends adopted but not adopted yet brother can do crazy shit with a bag of twigs and a lighter.
Other club names that got shut down: killed then revived by the same person club, evil family lineage club, mind controlled club, tortured by loa club, Lazarus pit club (fun facts would currently have Jason, Cass, and Kate if you go with everything's canon), killed a person who was later resuscitated club, turned into a tentacle monster club, and many many more cor the short period of time they tried to figure out which traumas they shared with certain members (it was actually very short because no one was willing to share anything about themselves that wasn't common knowledge).

#but could we have a single thought as a treat?
Well, since you asked so nicely... hum... which one... which one...
When the press catches the leaked news that Bruce Wayne has adopted another child, of course they go wild. Now none of Bruce's children were every introduced on a proper schedule, but the press can't even get a good photo of this new one. The few times they are out, always flanked and hidden by siblings, they're in a hat and covered up.
Rumors start going around that there is something "wrong with this one". Bruce just about mauls the reporter who dares to say that to his face. (He would have if Jason hadn't stopped him. Jason is fully aware of the irony of him being the one to hold Bruce back.)
Finally though the press has a name: Thomas Wayne (and doesn't the city go wild for that) and the date of the first public appearance: a gala. The family thinks it will work best because they can have Tom in and out, with limited press time, and always well guarded.
Phantom- Tom isn't so sure about it all himself, but he's trying, of course he is. He's always trying so hard. So he puts up with the tailor's visit and the fitting and goes to the bathroom to change into the suit he was handed. It's a traditional black and white tux. Can't go wrong with that, the tailor had said.
But when Tom puts on the suit and sees himself in the mirror in sharp black and crisp white he wants to just scream. He can't be in those colors not again- no no no!
It's the first time Tom has gone full, intangible shadow in a very long time. Needless to say, the family panics. Especially when they can't find him at first.
I'm sitting here rolling in post Shadow of a Bat thoughts like NO. You have things in progress! Many things! Work on them.

I think DC neds to do a five year time skip. Take their entire continuity and more it forward five years. Give us fans something new.
Maybe Bruce and Selina finally tied the knot, maybe they even have a little Helena Wayne. Their starting to train her to follow in their footsteps. Just have a bunch of sevens of the little three year old doing splits with her mom, learning how to analyze samples with her dad. Damien teaching her to fight. And of course, all the older siblings spoiling her rotten. Bruce is simply happy to spend time with his wife and kids. Selina still loves her cats. The house is over run with them, domestic and wild.
Dick and Babs should definitely be married. They have a two year old boy, James, after Barbara’s brother. Maybe even start with Barbara’s second pregnancy. This time a girl named Mary, after Dick’s mom. They have a large apartment in Blùdhavan. Dick is still Nightwing. Barbara struggles juggling her roles as his partner and wife, Batman, and The Bird’s Oracle, and being a mom. The Alfred Pennyworth foundation is thriving, and Babs resented reclaimed Gotham Clean Energy. Being the genius she is is Barbara refuses to send her kids to public school. Dick worries that adds to much extra stress to her life. She loves it. To thank her for all of her hard work, Dick brings home little gifts for her at least once a week. These presents range from chocolate bars to new computer equipment. As much as he loves when Babs cooks, Dick usually prepares their meals.
What would truly be a bomb, would be to put Jason in serious relationship. Personally, I would go with Helena Bertenilli. They started working together as partners. As they spent more time together, it became clear that they both were looking for a more intimate relationship. Their shared understanding of loss brought them closer together, until their relationship turned into lovers. Helen’s exceptional skill as a history teacher, earned her a place at Gotham High. Seeing Jason’s talent with kids, her confided him to get a teaching job as well. He mostly teaches P.E. at Gotham Academy, but also has a black smith class. He makes knives and sword son the weekend, and sells them to make money on the side. On the Battlefield, Huntress and Red Hood are inseparable, and on of the best teams Batman has. They both deeply love each other, but are afraid to talk about commitment.
Tim and Stephine are currently have issues. They’ve had an on and off relationship for the last year. Tim has entirely taken over running Wayne Enterprises. He works all day, and is out as Red Robin most of the night. His exhaustion puts a massive strain on their relationship. He feels bad about having so little time for Steph, and to show her how much he loves, her is planning to propose. Stephine feels neglected. As much as she loves Tim, his constant stress weighs on her. After talking with her mentors, she has decided that time apart would be good for both her and Tim, but she doesn’t know how to tell him. Steph has been job bouncing for awhile, another reason she’s cautious about leaving.
Cass is still Bruce’s angel child. She has little interest in dating. Her main focus is always the mission. Barbara believes she needs to get a job and stop relying on Bruce for funding. The only idea she even considered, was Helena’s suggestion to become a federal agent. Bruce strongly opposes the idea. After her father died, Cass has been trying to patch things up with her mom, who unsurprisingly wants Cass to join the League of Shadows.
At first, Damien was reluctant to accept Selina, though he would never admit, he was still hoping for his parents to work things out. When Bruce married Selina, it became clear Talia wasn’t coming back. Over time, she grew on him. Selina was the one to figure out that Damien missed his mother. After some negotiations, she convinced Bruce to invite Talia over for the holidays. It became an eagerly anticipated tradition for Damien. Talia as brings food and gifts for him. It’s the one time of year when Damian’s almost always smiles. Dami adores his little sister, and has even sworn to protect her at all costs. His relationship with Flatline died out very quickly after their meeting. Mostly, because of how immature they both were. Four years, and a sweet ex later, they meet once again on the field of battle. Again sparks flew, leading to a passionate reunion, and another hero and villain love story.
Jade and Lian were recently reunited. Their relationship is still on rocky ground, but Jade is determined to make up for the time she missed with her daughter. She makes every effort to connect with Lian, even while fighting shadows from her past. Every night, to two will sit on the roof outside of Lian’s window. Their shared interest in astronomy is a safe topic, one they touch on often. Lian wants a relationship with her mother, but is afraid Jade will leave again. Jade’s proud that her daughter took the name Cheshire Cat, and love watching her daughter in action, even though it’s usually from a distance.
Dinah and Oliver have been married for a few years. They found out pretty soon that they can’t have kids. After the news, Dinah went into depression. Their friends and family stepped up to help. Bruce tried to convince them to adopt. Neither want to, until they meet a feisty young girl named Kayleigh. Kayleigh is closed off, with deep wounds. She’s trying to become a vigilant in Star City. Her methods are overly violent. Oliver sees his younger self in her and brings her under his wing. Dinah takes a little to warm up to her. Kayleigh gives them both quite a bit of trouble, but their determined to read her. But Kayleigh’s secrets are something that could shatter their belief in her. She knows the day the find out, will be the last time she has anything close to a family.

author’s note: once upon a time there was a tiny Luíza who thought it was a good idea to wirite a royal!au. She spent 3 months working on it, but she couldn’t make justice to the words in her head so she gave up on it. Then she watched Bridgerton and decided to give the draft another chance;
so yeah this is a royal!au. this is also my first mature work. nothing explicit just a mention of the devil’s tango.
BEWARE: minors: there is nothing explicit, but there is a mention of sex towards the end, so read it with discretion. I would classify this as a 16+

This was a business transaction, she kept reminding herself.
There were lives on the line, lives she had sworn to protect. It was her duty as the princess to guarantee the continuity and longevity of her bloodline and, above all else, her subjects. And the proposition presented to her guaranteed both of those.
She saw it coming. Her Father’s lavish spending sprees, buying fights with people he shouldn’t. The vault had emptied—not completely, although it wasn’t nowhere near the same state it once was—and the people had suffered. She inherited the mess.
Her kingdom, her prized kingdom, so brilliant, so beautiful, was in ruins. Because of an ego too big. She wasn't going to let that happen again.
The Wayne’s presented as the exit. The kingdom of Gotham neighbored her own, it would be convenient for them to incorporate hers. But above all else, king Bruce wasn’t looking for lands, he wanted knowledge, something her kingdom had plenty to spare.
He wanted the kingdom of scholars to be his own. He wanted to stop the gangs, the barbaric gangs that destroyed her precious land, and he needed help from her scholars. Bruce gave her a business offer too hard to refuse. But there’s always a catch.
‘She’ll marry into the family,’ he wrote in his letter to the Queen, her mother. ‘My second son, he’s the Captain of the Royal Guards, he’s the one to take my throne. She’ll be a fine Queen, and with her knowledge, Y/N will help defeat this evil lurking in our shadows’.
At first, she refused. She wanted to do it, but not at the cost of her future, not at the cost of her love. But she cooled her head. She couldn’t let her selfishness get in the way of the kingdom’s prosperity. So, she sent a letter to King Bruce. She accepted, at the condition they would do whatever it takes to preserve her tradition of knowledge. If to preserve her kingdom and give her people a relief she had to sell herself, then she would gladly do it

Gotham was nowhere near as beautiful as her kingdom. It had its charm, she could see why someone would like it, but it didn’t have the same ethereal air to it. On the contrary, it was quite gray and moody.
She guessed it went along with the family running it. The Wayne’s were famous for being an overly serious, and, quite honestly, incredibly brooding family. King Bruce adopted 6 children—and rumors went around that only one of them was biological; a bastard—and all of them had varying levels of moodiness. She was to marry the second one: Prince Jason, Prince of Park Row.
For a long time, he was the cautionary tale that was told to the children of the royal families. The Prince gone wrong, he snapped, rebelled, and, to many, he had fallen from grace. It was only a few years back he had resurfaced to the public attention as the one who was to be the next king. What happened between being the fallen Prince to being the heir was a mystery, one she wasn't sure she wanted to unveil.
She looked at the windows, seeing the tiny rock houses and the calm villagers walking around under the daylight. She knew that once the night fell, things would change and the streets would be filled with those she yearned to eradicate.
“You do not have to go through with this, my daughter,” her Mother started, once again trying to convince you of backing out of the deal. “We can find another way.”
“There isn’t,” she answered. Her Mother opened her mouth to try to argue. “Don’t, Mother. You raised me to do what was right by my kingdom and its people and continuing by ourselves isn’t the answer.”
“You are not sure about that,” Mother said, condescending in her words.
“Don’t patronize me, Mother,” she shot back, her tone controlled. “I know this isn’t the ideal situation, but our situation wasn’t ideal to begin with,” she inhaled, her gaze shifting to the window of the carriage. “If Father hadn’t been so careless, we wouldn’t be here, and I would have turned down King Bruce’s proposal.”
“I know,” Mother agreed quietly. “I feel for our loss of freedom, that’s all.”
“This isn’t a loss of freedom. This is a new beginning. This is our chance to right our wrongs. Is there more freedom than that?” she responded, putting an end to this conversation as the carriage approached the castle.
It was incredible and grandiose, far more than her family’s castle. It was fitting, she’d heard once from Elizabeth, one of the ladies in her court, that the Waynes vault was enormous. She didn’t know how she knew but seeing the castle alone she believed it.
The carriage pulled to a stop, the door opening for her exit. Mother went first accepting the help from the coachman. She got out gracefully next, and the coachman closed the door behind her. She saw two men standing approaching. The older one had an austere air to him, but as he got nearer, she saw the crinkles next to his eyes, indications of years of smiling. The younger one had mischief in his eyes, and she couldn’t deny that he was incredibly handsome.
“Your Majesty,” the older man bowed to her Mother. He then turned to her and bowed, “Your Highness, it is an absolute pleasure to have you in our kingdom.”
She smiled politely. “The pleasure is all mine, Sir.”
He smiled back. “I’m Alfred Pennyworth, I run the Wayne estate,” he turned once again to Mother. “Your Majesty, if you please I’ll show you to your quarters.”
“Yes, thank you, Sir Pennyworth,” Mother answered, following him into the castle.
The other man cleared his throat. “Your Highness, I’m Prince Dick, Duke of Blüdhaven,” he bowed, and she offered her hand. He kissed it politely, quickly releasing it and standing straight. “I’m the one escorting you today.”
“Thank you, Prince Dick,” she said politely.
“Shall we?” he offered his arm, and she couldn’t miss the golden glimmer of his wedding band on his hand.
         “We shall,” she said, controlled.
Both of them walked calmly, as he showed her around the castle. She noticed the extravagant décor, paintings of generations of Wayne’s before adorning the walls, amongst other priceless pieces of art she was sure were worth more than the entire treasure she had in her kingdom. She quietly observed as he showed the corridor to her quarters for the month—he gracefully omitted the fact that she was marrying a stranger by the end of it and this wasn’t going to be her room any longer than that.
She heard Prince Dick sigh next to her. “I’m sorry it has come to this,” he stated. “I’m sure I can speak for my Father when I say we all wished for a different outcome.”
She offered him a tight smile. “Yes, well, I believe what we have agreed on is what’s right for both of our kingdoms,” she noted. “And while I wonder what would have been like if I didn’t come to this decision, if I may be candid, I do not regret making it.”
He chuckled. “Yes, I’m glad you do not have any regrets, Your Highness,” he said. “And I’m glad you were candid about it. I’m positive you’ll do great in our family.”
He stopped in front of a large and sturdy double door. He knocked 3 times. “The King awaits you,” he stated to her. “You shall wait here.”
“Yes, thank you, Your Highness,” she bowed slightly. “Thank you for escorting me.”

“I will not marry her, for fucks sake,” Jason growled, slamming his hands on his guardian’s imponent desk. “I will not be a fucking bargain coin for your politics, Bruce.”
Bruce didn’t even flinch with his son’s outburst. “It is your duty.”
“Shove the duty up your ass, then. I have too many things to worry about, I don’t want another.”
Bruce continued to look at the map sprawled out on his desk, “The L/N’s are incredibly smart and their kingdom holds a lot of the knowledge that we need to defeat the Joker’s gang and the others. This is very much your concern, isn’t it?”
Jason shuddered at the mention of Joker. “It is,” he said, defiant.
“Then marry her and do your job,” he stood up, leaning menacingly over the desk to look Jason in the eye. “You are the main responsible for our safety, and although I disagree with your methods, you are doing a good job. You need to start thinking of the future, Jason. This is bigger than you.”
Jason huffed in annoyance. “I know of that,” he muttered. Then he smirked and said: “But you didn’t marry and had biological kids, Bruce,” he taunted. “Why should I do it the traditional way?”
“Because I know what it’s like to not go down that path, son,” he answered, raising his voice slightly, but still composed. “I don’t want you to be like me, I want you to be better.”
Jason was speechless. He tried to mutter a word but his brain couldn’t think of any of it. “I still don't want to marry her.”
“You will, though,” his Father answered, opening his drawer and pulling the contract out of it. “And all I ask of you is to not push her away. You’ll need her, more than she’ll need you.”
Jason wasn’t exactly sure what he meant by that. And he hated to admit—he and Bruce were constantly fighting over everything, especially after… after—but his Father was right. He wished it didn’t come at the cost of his liberty. He wasn’t looking for a wife. He found that it would only hold him back. But the prospect of the crown loomed in his horizon, and if he wanted to do right by his people, marrying was one of the requirements. It was too late to turn back.
Three sturdy knocks sounded. Jason quickly recomposed himself.

She had seen King Bruce once, when she was younger. Her Mother threw a gala for whatever reason and he attended. She didn’t remember seeing any of his kids there, or maybe she was too occupied with her own thoughts to notice.
She remembered him being charming and handsome. A lot of the ladies of the court wanted to marry him, but somehow none of them had managed to. She recalled the color of his eyes so vividly, not because it was beautiful—it was—but because it revealed something deeper about himself that left her guessing. She could never discover it, though. Some things are better left unsaid and unknown.
Looking at him now felt like she had entered a time machine. He had stayed the same, save a couple of wrinkles of worry—totally comprehensible for someone with his position.
She curtsied. “Your Majesty, it’s an honor to meet you once again,” she said.
“Princess Y/N, please come in,” he motioned for her to come in. She straightened up and calmly walked into the room. “I believe you haven’t acquainted yourself with Prince Jason,” he nodded towards the direction of the man standing angrily in the corner.
“No, I haven’t,” she smiled politely and turned to the man. She curtsied, “Your Highness, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
She could feel him rolling his eyes, even if she couldn’t see him. “The pleasure is all mine, Your Highness,” he answered sarcastically.
She uncurled and crossed her hands in front of her body. She glanced one last time at her suitor, studying him.
        He was beautiful.
Jason had the prettiest eyes she had ever seen. They were the perfect shade of blue, and she never thought there was a perfect shade of color. His hair had a streak of white, that made him look even more rugged than he already was. His hair was swept, messy in the perfect way. He was pretty in the way a bounty hunter or a thief would be, not the way a prince would. Princes were known for being pristine and soft around the edges: Jason was nothing like that.
She turned her eyes to the king. “I believe we have arrangements to make,” she said calmly.
“Yes, we do,” the king replied. He picked up a stack of papers on top of his desk. “I took the liberty of assembling a contract for the annexation,” his hand rested on top of it. “Your input will be valuable.”
King Bruce handed her the papers. “Thank you very much, your Majesty. I imagine this needs to be signed by the end of the week?”
“Yes, but I’d rather it was signed today. Forgive me for the rush, but we need your scholars’ help as soon as possible.”
“I understand,” she replied. “By the end of the day we can sign then.”
“That’s perfect, Princess Y/N. Jason, escort her to the library so she can read in peace,” Bruce commanded.
“Yes, Father,” he gritted through his teeth. She could feel his body shaking with anger and resentment and she knew she was the source of it.
He strode towards the door and flung it open for her. She curtsied to the king one last time, before turning and accompanying her suitor towards the library.
Jason’s hands were crossed behind his back, his feet heavily stomping the ground. She kept up with him, walking side by side, lifting her dress slightly.
The walk was filled with strained silence. She started to feel uneasy about the waves of anger coming off Jason, she felt the need to address it.
He stopped abruptly and opened the double door standing in front of them, revealing the most beautiful library she had ever laid eyes on. Bookshelves adorned all of the walls, from the ceiling to the floor. The stairs to the mezzanine—once again filled with full bookshelves—were of sculpted wood and she considered them pieces of art. The ceiling had the most beautiful paintings on it, and she wondered who had the patience to paint such a huge canvas. It was all breathtaking.
“Well, this is the library. If you need anything don’t hesitate on calling one of the help,” Jason said mechanically, snapping her back to reality.
“Thank you, your Highness,” she muttered, still quite perplexed at the sight. She inhaled deeply and said: “I know this situation isn’t ideal and that you might feel cornered. But, truly, I’m not here to get in your way. I just want what’s best for my people.”
Jason hummed, his anger somewhat subsiding but still very much present. “Yes, well,” he said, “I think you should get to reading that contract. Wouldn’t want to keep his Majesty waiting,” he finished, voice laced with sarcastic undertones. He turned around and left her alone with the papers.

It was late at night. The sun was long gone. Her stomach rumbled in hunger; the last thing she ate was at lunch, when she was about halfway through the papers.
It wasn’t even that long, she just wanted to be thorough. She had read every single line for what it was and all the possible meaning behind it. Kudos to King Bruce for making such a complete and meaningful contract, she had been entertained the entire day.
She rubbed her eyes, exhausted. She had managed to reorganize the contract after pulling it apart, the small piece of paper with her suggestions resting on top of it. With her hands stained with ink, she picked the papers up and headed towards the door, when it opened.
“Sir Pennyworth,” she said in surprise, “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Your Highness, his Majesty has sent me to escort you to his office. I believe you’ve settled on the final details of the papers?” he announced politely.
“Yes, I did. King Bruce did a superb job on it,” she complimented. He guided the way towards the office.
“I’m afraid it wasn’t him who wrote it,” Sir Pennyworth pondered.
         “No?” she replied.
“I’m sure it was Prince Tim, he’s the one with an aptitude for these endeavors,” he said.
“Oh, I’m afraid I haven’t met Prince Tim, yet. I’ll be sure to compliment him when I do.”
“He’ll be excited, your Highness,” he commented. “What did you think of Gotham so far?”
She smiled sweetly at the older man. “I haven’t seen the city yet, but I found the part I have seen completely charming,” it wasn’t completely a lie. It was charming. Just not as charming as her own kingdom. “The castle, though, I’m mesmerized by it. You have done an incredible job maintaining it, Sir Pennyworth.”
“Please, your Highness, call me Alfred. Thank you for your kind words,” he smiled warmly.
“Well, Alfred,” she stressed his name, respecting his wishes, “thank you for escorting me.”
She stopped as she saw the familiar door, holding the papers tightly. “It’s been my pleasure, your Highness,” he bowed, and left.
She knocked on the door, calmly. A muffled come in came through and she turned the doorknob. Walking in, she saw King Bruce and three of his sons gathered around a round desk in the corner, a map sprawled out. She curtsied. “Your Majesties, I’m here with the contract and my notes.”
She saw one of the Princes mouth ‘notes?’ to Prince Dick, (who shrug it off, just as confused) as Prince Jason rolled his eyes at her once more. “Please, Princess, sit down so we can further discuss it,” he motioned to his desk. “Dick, Tim, we will continue debating this tomorrow. Dick, you are dismissed. Tim, stay in case we need to change the composition.”
Both Princes furrowed their eyebrows. As Dick left the room without a word or bow—which she was sure broke some kind of protocol—Tim decided to sit on an armchair next to the table they were standing before. The door closed with a click and she sat down, the papers resting on her lap gently.
“I heard you said you have some notes on the text?” King Bruce initiated politely.
“I mean no disrespect, your Majesty. The redaction was splendid,” she complimented, “I just mean there could be a couple of points added to make it more complete.”
“Yes, yes,” he agreed, “please make your points.”
“I agreed to this proposition on the condition of preserving my kingdom’s tradition in academia. While there was a clause in page 5 that stated that clearly, I thought it would be to everyone’s benefit if it was expanded into specifics,” she handed him the contract and the notes.
He glanced over the notes, Jason reading it too, behind his Father. “I think these are all fair requests.”
She smiled. A much needed win for her kingdom. “Thank you,” she said.
“Tim, grab a pen and paper and add these to the text,” Bruce ordered. “We sign this tonight.”
Tim jumped up from his seat, quickly opening a drawer for the pen and paper, and grabbing her notes. He scribbled furiously and within minutes the new page of the contract was finished, both parties agreeing to it.
“Now, all there’s left to do is sign,” Tim announced handing a pen to Jason.
She noticed Jason’s eyes filled with something indescribable, a mix of what she assumed was anger and grief. She wished both of them had a choice, but this was bigger than both. She prayed to the stars that both could make the best of this bad situation.
He signed, handing the pen to her. Her fingers brushed for a mere second, and she felt heat rising to her cheeks. She quickly recomposed herself and swiftly signed out her name, her kingdom.
It was done. It was easier than she thought it would be. She hoped she hadn’t made the wrong decision, and there was all that was left to do.
King Bruce dismissed Tim, leaving just her and Jason in the room. “There’s the matter of the engagement ball,” he stated. “We hope to announce your engagement by the end of next week.”
“Of course,” she stated clearly. Jason only grunted.
“Should I expect both of you to be involved in the planning?” the King asked. It sounded more like an order and she knew Jason knew about that.
Jason nodded stiffly. She then turned to the King and opened a polite smile. “Yes, of course, Your Majesty,” she agreed.
King Bruce dismissed both of them and Jason ran out of the room.
She ran to catch up to him, his long strides almost besting her in a long gown and high heels. “Prince Jason, wait!” she shouted.
         He stopped and turned. “What?”
If she was taken aback by his rudeness she was sure to not show it. “Since now it’s official, I was wondering if I could tag along to one of your strategy meetings. I might have some knowledge to share or point the way to help.”
“Aren’t you going to be too busy planning the ball?” he taunted.
“I’m perfectly capable of focusing on more than one thing,” she replied dryly. “Gotham is my kingdom now, I want it to prosper. And I want to be a part of it.”
His face didn’t leave any indications on whether or not he was to grant her permission to participate, so she was surprised when she heard him agreeing. “I’ll arrange for you to participate in one. I’ll send Alfred to tell you details,” he dismissed and turned around once again intended to walk to wherever he was headed.
“Thank you,” she shouted after him.
He hesitated before walking. He turned to her slightly and gave her a smile--and she felt like it was an honest one. He turned back and disappeared.

A gentle breeze blew as she walked down the busy streets of Gotham. Her dress—which she felt was too light for this occasion—blended in with the crowd splendidly. Jason walked beside her calmly, his hands behind his back.
His face was serene and calm, as if he was truly where he belonged. She thought it as a good quality: it meant he was empathic, not on a pedestal like most heirs. He came from the people and he would serve his people. Her heart fluttered involuntarily. She struggled to contain it.
The people of the city were quite vivacious and charming. The city in itself was gloomy and, quite honestly, a touch depressing, but the people colored the streets and made it feel almost as if the city was breathing.
“This is so different,” she said, perplexed by the movement around her. No one as they passed by her noticed who she was, or better, what she was. “They don’t care.”
         Jason smiled. “No, they don’t.”
         “It’s quite magical,” she concluded.
“It may be to us, but to other people,” he pointed to a couple, both very dirty and very thin sitting on the floor. They tried to get people’s attention, but they just didn’t care, “well, it can be quite awful.”
She wished she was just as cold as those other people. It would save her a whole lot of suffering but she wasn’t. People’s pains found a way to her heart and became her own. She pushed through the crowd, muttering a few ‘excuse me’s along the way. She took off the only jewelry—a necklace, so simple and delicate; it was one of her favorites—she was wearing and left it in the can the old couple had in front of them.
She knelt to be at eye level with them and said, looking at their shocked faces: “Sell it, please. It’s worth some money and you’ll be able to buy some food and clothes.”
Their faces lit up and they thanked her enthusiastically. She smiled at them before getting up and rejoining Jason and continuing her walk. He had the same shock the couple had. He offered his arm, out of politeness she was sure, and her hand rested on the crook of his elbow.
“Out of all the things I thought you would do, I—” he trailed off.
“You think so little of me,” she said. “I’m not heartless, you know?”
“I never assumed that,” he muttered.
She looked him dead in the eye. His eyes twinkled in the sunlight and once again she had to fight the fluttering feeling in her stomach. “Good.”
A few beats went by before either of them spoke again. She was the one to break the silence. “Does Gotham have any social programs to help the poor? It would greatly benefit the people,” she added kindly. “If there isn’t, I’m sure I can think of something to help.”
Jason fought to contain a smile creeping on his face. “I think His Majesty deals with this type of project. You’d have to talk to him,” he said, guiding her back to the carriage.
“I’ll discuss it with him then,” she said, impassive, her lips quirking up at the end. “Have you arranged for me to participate in the meeting?”
Jason sobered up quickly. He couldn’t show her that he found her amusing. He couldn’t be so transparent. He didn’t want a wife, he repeated to himself. He didn’t need a wife, he tried to convince himself. This girl was not for him, she was too good. “I did.”
She smiled. “Great. I’ll catch up on studies so I can understand everything.”
He hoped he had remained impassive, because he couldn’t control the plethora of feelings inside his heart. Fuck.

Jason paced in his office. Tim watched him closely, studying his brother.
“Why are you so exasperated?” Tim questioned. “I’m glad you like her, otherwise you would have led a horrible life.”
“That’s exactly my point,” Jason said, running his hands through his hair. “I don’t want to like her, Tim. She’s too good for me.”
“How do you know that? You’ve barely even met her,” Tim leaned forward, his elbows resting on his thighs.
“I just fucking know it, Tim,” he snapped, yelling at his brother. “It’s bullshit, that’s what it is. I wasn’t supposed to be in this situation, I’m not supposed to fall in love and get married and have a white picket fence life, goddammit. Look at me” he motioned to himself, looking straight into Tim’s eyes, “I’m a fucking disgrace. I’m a monster who kills people without remorse, I’m—”
“Enough with the self-pity, Jason!” Tim got up abruptly, matching Jason’s volume. Jason’s mouth promptly shut. “Stop it. You’ve wallowed in it since Bruce told you about the arrangement, I won’t allow it anymore,” he added quietly. “You know none of what you said is true, you know it,” Tim walked to his brother and rested his hands on his shoulder. “Fuck what you think, Jay. Fuck what everybody else thinks, okay? You’re already getting married to her no matter what, let yourself like her. It’s the least you could do.”
“I can’t—” Jason inhaled sharply recomposing himself. “I don’t know if I can like her the way she deserves.”
“Then try. Isn’t it what you’ve spent your life doing? Trying? Try this too. What’s the worst that could happen?”
“She hates me and I have to be married for the rest of my life with someone who hates me,” he didn’t say that that was his greatest fear. That he never wanted to be like his parents, fighting and bickering and beating each other. Showing their worst to the world. Having a kid and traumatizing him to the point he’d hardly trust someone.
“So, you’d be just like another royal,” Tim tried to lighten up the mood. He noticed Jason’s somber expression and quickly sobered up.  “She doesn’t hate you. She’s trying so hard to please you, to prove to you she’s a worthy addition to the family, can’t you see?”
“She’s not doing it for me,” Jason got out of Tim’s hold, turning his back to his brother.
“She may not, but she’s trying hard, when most wouldn’t even bother. That’s something, Jay,” Tim completed.
Jason didn’t complement Tim. He had enough with the talking and the convincing. Tim sighed sadly, and left the room, leaving Jason to sulk alone.

Between setting everything up for the ball, arranging the wedding ceremony, learning everything she could about Gotham recent history, and everything else she had taken upon, she was completely and utterly occupied.
It was for the better though. The more she was doing, the less she stayed inside her head, thinking about herself and letting her anxiety and doubt eat her inside. She had done the right thing, she kept reminding herself. She had done the best thing for her people, they would prosper, they would not suffer anymore.
And yet, there was always a little voice telling her that she had signed her people’s death sentence. The more she learned about Gotham, the more she read about its history and its horrors and its corruption, the more she thought she had condemned her people to a life in misery. Look at the amount of homeless, she thought, why did Gotham have so many homeless people, so many kids?
No. No. No. She wouldn’t allow herself to get nervous. She was sure in her decision, and Prince Jason had proven himself to be reliable, even if he was distant. When she asked him a favor, he did it. When she asked him a question about his lands--Park Row--he would answer it truthfully. It was more than she could have expected in an arranged marriage. Most of those ended up in misery, both parties unfaithful to their spouses. She knew Prince Jason wouldn’t seek pleasure and comfort elsewhere. She felt it.
As soon as she stopped in front of Jason’s improvised study in Gotham’s main castle, Prince Tim opened the door. She could see Jason gazing through the window, his back turned to the door.
“Princess Y/N!” Prince Tim exclaimed, surprised. “I wasn’t expecting you to be here.”
She saw Jason tense and turn to them. She smiled. “I have a couple of things to discuss with Prince Jason,” she explained.
Tim chuckled. “Yes, yes, of course,” he shook his head and said with an airy smile on his face. He turned to Jason and shared a look. Jason looked like he could kill his brother. Tim stepped out of the way and let her enter the room. She entered and Tim left closing the door behind him.
She stared at him. He looked tired, the bags under his eyes casting shadows over his face. But somehow, his eyes looked brighter than she had ever seen it before. She has trouble breathing and her heart beated faster inside her chest. She swallowed dryly, her hands gripping tightly the papers she carried. She curtsied to him. Follow protocol. Protocol is safe, it doesn’t make anyone nervous.
“You wanted to see me?” he asked, his voice strained.
“Yes, well,” she snapped out of her daze, “there’s still a few details to be decided for the ball.”
He sighed and sat on his chair, his body looking exhausted. “Can’t you decide?”
“It’s not only my ball,” she said. “I can’t decide for you, Your Highness.”
“Don’t call me Your Highness,” he muttered, annoyed. “It’s weird. We’re going to be married,” he explained. “I don’t want to have protocol in the middle of it.”
She looked down at her feet and back up at him. There went her comfort, the line she drew to not get too close. It was a business transaction after all, no need to get personal. Well, she figured, it got personal when she promised herself as a bargain coin for politics. “Yes, of course,” she whispered. “It won’t happen again,” she finished.
He sighed. He mentioned for her to sit in front of her and she sat. “We need to establish some rules before we embark in this...journey together,” he stated.
        “Of course,” she agreed.
“I don’t want you to be restrained by protocols and etiquette when speaking to me,” he said softly. “We’re going to rule a kingdom together, one that just got bigger, we’re going to have to trust each other.”
“I agree,” she said, hesitant. “What is your point?”
“Call me Jason,” he said. “I never really liked my title all that much and I don’t want my future wife using it when talking to me,” he stated. It was the first time she heard him referring to her as his future wife, and he said it like it didn’t bother him. It sent butterflies to her stomach.
“Yes, you’re right,” she shook her head. Of course he was. Her parents never called each other by their titles when they were alone. “I suppose you’d want to form a friendship too?”
His mouth quirked up. “That would be preferable, yes,” he said.
“Okay, then, Jason,” she stressed his name. “Then we should start this partnership deciding which colors do you want the napkins to be.”
“Actually,” Jason started, “I have something to give you first.”
She raised her eyebrows. “You do?”
“Yes,” he breathed. “I wanted to start this on the right foot,” he pulled out a little velvet box from a drawer behind the desk and walked to be beside her. “Since we’re engaged, I thought it was only appropriate to give you an engagement ring.”
She looked up at him, surprised. “You didn’t have to,” she shook her head. “I wasn’t expecting this.”
He smiled at her. “Open it,” he urged her.
She picked up the box and opened. Resting inside it, she noticed, was the prettiest ring she had ever seen. There was a single ruby, sided with two simple diamonds. It wasn’t the flashiest and biggest engagement ring she ever saw--one of the ladies of her court married a rich duke from a far away kingdom and he had given her a diamond ring that almost covered her entire finger. “It’s beautiful,” she said, staring at it.
“Allow me,” he said, picking the box, and slipping the ring on her finger. His hands lingered on hers longer than it should have. “There.”
She stared at it for a bit longer. “I have no words, Jason.”
He smirked and walked to his chair. “How about we decide the color of the napkins?”
He knew he shouldn’t have done that. He was getting involved, he was cultivating feelings for her, feelings he had refused to have just mere minutes ago when he was talking with Tim. But when he was with her, he couldn’t help it, he was just swept away by her. Suddenly, around her, Jason wanted to do everything to please her, to make her happy and satisfied.
Jason knew he was in deep shit. Jason knew he was falling for her, and he wanted, consciously, to stop that. But he couldn’t: his heart spoke louder.
He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing.

They had walked side by side the entirety of the ball. Her hand rested in a variety of places, the crook of his elbow, his hand, or the skirt of her dress. It didn’t need any saying that her favorite place for her hand to be was in his.
Nevertheless, the fluttering it sent to her stomach every time he would smile at her--albeit she knew the smile was only for show--it didn’t diminish the anger she felt at him.
They walked side by side all night, him telling a fantasious story about how they met. It was love at first sight, he’d tell. They’d met under the moonlight, a sky full of stars, he looked at her and knew she was meant for him. She wore a blue dress, according to him. She smiled at him and it was like a whole new world opened up to him, a world full of love. According to him.
The worst part was that she couldn’t say anything. Because she didn’t know anything about the lie he had constructed, what he had told other people when she was talking to his brothers while he was talking to Kings of other kingdoms. And that was what made her angry. He had reduced her, at least for the night, as a mere accessory for him.
He had been so sweet with her, so charming and loving. And then he did what he did. It could have been worse, she thought. He could have been invasive, he could have ignored her ‘no’. In that way, he was an angel. But he was still shitty with her that night. And it didn’t matter that it could have been a million times worse, Jason had reduced her to an arm candy. She still felt like an object. That would never be acceptable to her.
He took her to the dance floor, as the orchestra played a slow song.
“It was a charming story you told our guests,” she said, her voice impassive.
“I figured it would be better for them to think we’re marrying for love instead of what actually is,” he explained, his hand resting on her lower back and the other holding her hand. She ignored the feeling his touch sent through her body.
“I wish you would have told me,” she said, her voice strained. She tried to control her anger.
“What do you mean?” he asked, confused.
“I discovered you had concocted a story for us at the same time all the others did, Jason,” she said. “And I couldn’t say anything, in risk of exposing the lie you’ve built.”
He looked at her confused for a mere second, before recognizing what he did. “I’m sorry,” he apologized. “I didn’t think--”
“You didn’t,” she interrupted him. “I’m not an accessory, Jason. I’m far too smart for that role,” she said. “I can’t stand by your side and smile and wave as if it’s just all I can do. I came to Gotham expecting not to be numbed by antique expectations of women of royalty. And you forced me to fit that box tonight. I hate it.”
“I’m truly sorry,” he said sincerely.
“Yes,” she nodded. “Next time you decide to lie, at least tell me what you’re planning. After all this is a partnership, we agreed on that. We can’t act behind each other's back.”
“You’re absolutely right,” he agreed, squeezing the hand he was holding more tightly and bringing her closer to him. “It won’t ever happen again.”
        “Good,” she nodded.
She knew he was trying to charm her with his tight hold on her. She tried to stay mad at him, tried to remain impassive, but she found that she felt safe with his arms around her like that. She broke a shy smile at him. He smiled at her too, his eyes bright with something unrecognizable.

She sat quietly in the corner, a notebook resting in her lap. Her fingers twiddled with the pen, as she listened attentively to what the council members had to say.
It was refreshing to be intellectually stimulated when she’d spent the entire week deciding dumb details about the wedding. It didn’t matter what flower arrangement the church was going to be decorated with, or which color the napkins were. She really didn’t care about it. If it were up to her she’d be married in a tiny room with no party. But it wasn’t, so she complied.
“—we need to send humanitarian help to the Bowery, the people are starving!” Lady Helena exclaimed, cutting Tim in his long rant about something overly complicated.
“We can send help after we eliminate Scarecrow!” Tim replied just as loudly. “If we send food, the gang will intercept and the situation will get worse, Helena. Don’t you get it?”
“What I get, Tim,” she said annoyed, “is that you are so entangled in your overly complicated plan to dismantle their operation that you are blind to the suffering of your people.”
Tim got up abruptly from the table, angry at Lady Helena, his fists balled up like he was going to punch her. Dick rested a hand in his brother's arms, calmly guiding him down for him to sit. Tim sat with a thud, his eyes flaming with rage, his face red.
Jason, who was awfully quiet the entire meeting, sighed and rubbed his hands on his face. He leaned forward on the table, looking defeated. “And here I thought we’d make a good first impression,” he mumbled.
“It’s okay, your Highness,” she said respectfully, thinking it would be better to use his title in front of the committee instead of his name. “In fact, I think I might have the solution to the Bowery problem.”
Tim scoffed. “Good luck with that. I’ve been trying for the past year to solve it and I’m nowhere near to the solution.”
She ignored his comment. “Anyway, I remember reading something about Scarecrow in my dad’s files. I’d need to reread to be sure, but I know there’s a safe way to provide supplies for those in need.”
Jason clasped his hands together. “Great! We’ll discuss details at the next meeting after we get those files.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d rather pick those up myself,” she said
“Sure, I’ll ask Alfred to arrange the trip,” he dismissed. “Well if there’s nothing else to discuss, this meeting is finished.”
The council members disbanded leaving only her and Jason in the council room.
“What did you think?” Jason asked, his voice tired.
“They mean well,” she started, “but I can see that they’re desperate for results. And desperation in these situations isn’t a good thing.”
“I know,” he sighed, his hands running through his hair. “I know, I’ve tried telling them but it never works in the long run.”
She smiled. “Good thing I know how to help,” she said.
“Yeah,” he sighed. “It’s good that you’re here.”

He knew it was coming. He thought he was prepared for it. He thought he wouldn’t feel anything when he saw her walking down the long aisle, he hoped he wouldn’t. But when Jason saw her in her white dress, walking towards him, his heart stopped for a second and the world stopped turning.
She chose to walk down the aisle by herself. She wanted to show she wasn’t led into any decisions. She was doing this by her own accord, her own judgement. Jason thought it showed a lot of her character. She stood by her decisions and its consequences. She was strong. He admired her, more than he cared to admit.
Jason could barely remember the ceremony. He couldn’t stop looking at her, memorizing every detail of her in the light of the Gotham Cathedral, the crown she was wearing, the embroidery in her dress. But most importantly, the look in her eyes. It was everything to Jason.
He couldn’t exactly place what it was yet, but it was there and it meant more to him than he realized it ever could.
He floated through the ball after the ceremony. It was weird to call someone his wife, he never thought he would see the day he could call someone that. But Jason found that it didn’t repulse him like it would have before he met her. He was left with a tingly sensation of joy inside him.
It scared the daylight out of him.
He kept a tight grip on her, walking side by side. She was enchanting. She talked smartly with Kings of neighboring kingdoms. He heard King Clark of Metropolis commenting to Bruce how perceptive the new princess was. How intelligent she was.
Jason knew all of that, but it still didn’t stop him from being mesmerized.
“Who’s that gentleman?” she nodded towards an old man on the corner of the room.
Jason hummed looking at the man. “That’s Oswald Cobblepot. He is a part of one of the oldest families of Gotham.”
“He has been staring intensely at me for the entire ball,” she looked at Jason, whispering to him.
“Well, you are the future Queen,” he commented. “People will stare at you more.”
“No,” she shook her head, her hand resting on the crook of his elbow. He guided her through the ballroom. “This is different. He looks at me like he hates me.”
“Oh,” he said. “He has a…quarrel, if you will, with the Waynes. His family was one of the few that founded Gotham. The Cobblepots almost ruled the land, but the Waynes got the kingdom. They have hated our family since then.”
“Now that I’m a Wayne, he hates me?” she asked. “This doesn’t feel right.”
        “Well, technically you’re a Todd-Wayne, but yes.”
She hummed. “He seems suspicious, Jason,” she whispered. “I think he’s planning something.”
“Cobblepot is a coward, he would never hurt you,” Jason reassured. “But he would pay for someone to do so.”
“You think he has?” a twinge of panic rising in her voice.
“He has done that before,” Jason said. “He wasn’t supposed to be invited, but Bruce insisted, and I had to dislocate more guards to the ballroom because of him.”
“Can you keep an eye on him?” she asked. “I have a bad feeling about him.”
“We always keep an eye on him, Y/N” he whispered. “He’s a criminal.”
“What?” she said, shocked. He guided her to the dance floor, as a soft song played through the room.
“We have undercover guards track him everywhere,” he stated quietly, as if no one was supposed to know. “We have to every criminal mastermind this city has ever had the pleasure to meet.”
“That’s a lot of guards then,” she commented.
“It’s a fucking nightmare,” he laughed. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anyone get to you, love.”
She looked at his eyes and smiled. “Thank you, Jason.”
“I’m your husband now, Y/N. It’s my duty,” he said.
She smiled shyly at him and glanced at their feet for a second before looking back at him. “I never thought…”
        He smiled at her. “What?”
She shook her head, smiling at him, completely lost for words. “Nevermind.”
He sighed and tightened his hold on her. “I didn’t say this yet, but you look breathtaking today,” he stated, clearly.
“You look beautiful too,” she replied.
He gaped at her, like he wasn’t expecting the compliment. He quickly recomposed himself. “Well, I guess we make a breathtakingly beautiful couple then,” he joked.
“I guess we do,” she looked deeply into his eyes, smiling softly. Her eyes glinted with something different, something familiar and warm. But something he couldn’t quite name yet.
He found that he looked forward to the day when he could.

She had dismissed the maid that would help her get rid of the dress. She was too nervous to deal with anyone else. She paced in front of her vanity, waiting for Jason to come in their room.
It was so weird to think that now there was a ‘they’. They were a couple, they were a unit.  It was a first for her, and she hadn’t had the time to think about it until all of the whirlwind of the wedding had passed.
“I thought you would have been out of that uncomfortable dress by now,” she heard him. She turned to see him. His shirt was unbuttoned, his tie hanging untied on his neck. He carried his jacket over his shoulder. He looked relaxed and comfortable, and she got even more nervous looking at him.
“I was nervous so I sent Claire away,” she shrugged.
He took a step in her direction. “What are you nervous about?”
She sighed and pressed her hands together over the skirt of her dress. “About us,” she whispered. “I didn’t think of the after. I didn’t have the time.”
He smiled and took another step towards her, finally close enough to her. She could see perfectly the sincerity in his eyes. She could see the scar above his eyebrow and the tiny freckles on his nose. “You don’t have to be nervous about anything,” he reassured her. “I won’t do anything you don’t want to do.”
“It’s not only that,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ve never done this before. This…” she hesitated, “partnership. I know things are different for men.”
“I don’t see how,” he furrowed his eyebrows.
“You know how,” she snapped. “Men are praised for their sexual endeavours. Women are expected to remain pure until marriage,” she explained calmly. “And it’s not fair to either of us, you have an unfair advantage over me and I--,” she stopped herself.
“It’s okay,” he whispered. “You can say it, I won’t be hurt.”
She shook her head. “I don’t know how to do this, Jason,” she admitted. “I’ve never even been kissed before.”
He smirked. “That’s easy to resolve,” he stated. His hands cradled her face and he leaned in, stopping just before their lips met. “If you want, of course,” he whispered, his breath mixing with hers.
Her breath got caught up in her throat. She wasn’t expecting him to be that direct. She thought he would seduce her first, like in the romance novel she had read. She’d rather his directness. “Yes,” she whispered.
He smirked and clashed his lips with hers. She closed her eyes and grabbed his shoulders tightly. His lips were surprisingly soft on hers, and she wondered what would happen if he decided to kiss with more passion instead of holding back.
She decided to, then, take the first step towards that direction. Her hands moved to his hair and she brought his lips closer to hers--which she thought it was impossible. She responded with more passion and more eagerness and he was shocked for a second before complying.
One of his hands moved to her waist and pressed her body closer to his. She opened her mouth just a little and his tongue licked her lips, entering her mouth slightly. She felt a wave of heat invade her, and she let it in pleasurably. His mouth started to make way down her neck, his fingers on her back, fumbling with the buttons of her dress.
She felt panicked at the intimacy of the act and tensed. Jason felt her nervousness and stopped. “We don’t have to go further if you don’t want to,” he whispered.
“It’s too much,” she replied, her voice strained. “It’s not you, Jay, I’m just not ready.”
He cradled her head, and placed a kiss on her forehead. “I’d wait forever for you,” he said. “I can wait until you’re ready.”
She gave him a shy smile. “Thank you,” she said softly.
“You’re welcome,” he said. “Now, let me undo those buttons and get some sleep,” he said. “It’s been a long day.”

The carriage shook as they rode through the country towards her kingdom. She looked out of the tiny window at the horizon, admiring the view.
“Did you miss home?” Jason asked.
She looked at him. “I did miss my Mother, and my friends,” she said, “But I don’t know if it’s my home anymore.”
“What is home then?” he asked, curious.
She searched in his eyes any indication of his intentions with that question. She found nothing but admiration and warmth and--if she’d be so bold--love. “I’m not sure yet,” she said. “When I found out, I’ll tell you.”
“Please do, I’d like to visit that place,” he laughed.
Now that they were officially married, they had moved back to Jason’s residence in Park Row. They were almost completely disconnected from the Wayne Castle in the outskirts of the city. Park Row was in a part of the city called Old Gotham, some would say it’s the heart of the city, right in the center, the most populous part. Others would say it’s the cancer of the mechanism of the town, littered with homeless and thieves.
Jason was born in Park Row. His parents were simple people. He didn’t give her much detail on who they were, and she could feel it hurt to talk about that subject so she didn’t push him to say anything. All he would tell was that his Father died first, and he was left as a child to help his sick Mother and him survive.
He became a pickpocket at age 8. His Mother died when he was 9. He lived on the streets up until he was 13. That was when King Bruce found him and took him in. Jason said he was trying to steal one of the wheels of his carriage when Bruce arrived and offered him shelter and food. Next day, he was already adopted and enrolled in classes. Next day he became a prince. She wondered what it was like for him to have gone through such a radical change in the span of a day.
He disappeared when he was 17. He was especially cagey about his time away. No matter what questions she asked he wouldn’t answer any of them. She wanted to attribute it to mystique, but she knew it was because of trauma.
When he came back he was a changed man, a stronger one, a more traumatised one. That was when he started to disagree with his Father more. He would question the methods Bruce would use in his hunt for justice in Gotham. He would question everything Bruce did, in Jason’s exact words. He didn’t detail anything and she started to notice a trend in his behavior: when something hurt him too deeply, he would barely talk about it.
Next thing he knew, he agreed to be the heir, he accepted the role his older brother left for him. He said it was because he knew better than any of his siblings how it was to be on the streets and suffer like most in Gotham. He would do better by them, and she believed in him. Wholeheartedly.
“So, what’s the plan of attack here?” he asked.
“We go in, say hello to my Mother and go to my Father’s study and look for the files,” she said. “It’s a dangerous mission, be careful,” she joked.
“We should have called for backup,” he said, seriously, embarking on her joke. “Maybe 1,000 soldiers would have sufficed.”
“More like 10,000,” she laughed. “Seriously, we’ll just spend the afternoon going through dusty paperwork,” she said. “It’s going to be quite boring.”
He smiled. “Nothing’s boring with you,” he stated.
She smiled back. “I quite disagree, but I appreciate the compliment.”
The carriage halted to a stop. Jason opened the door for her and offered his hand for her to come down the steps. She accepted it and stood proudly by his side. He offered his arm and she took it. He led her towards the staircase that led to the main entrance of her castle. She could see her Mother standing there waiting for her.
She had her problems with her Mother, but she still loved her. She left Jason’s hold and ran up the stairs to meet her Mother. She panted when she finally got up the stairs, but nevertheless, she held her Mother in a tight embrace. “I’ve missed you,” she whispered.
“You shouldn’t have run,” her Mother said in her ear, her voice humorous. “What would Prince Jason think?”
“Jason would think I love my Mother and I’ve missed her,” she stated. “How have you been?” she said, breaking the hug.
“I’ve been okay,” Mother answered. She looked behind her daughter and her expression became impassive. “Your Highness,” her Mother said. “It’s a pleasure to see you again.”
Jason smiled at her mother. “The pleasure is all mine.”
She smiled at her husband and at her Mother. “Shall we get inside?”she suggested. “Jason and I have to go through Father’s files.”
“Oh, those things?” her Mother said. “Good luck, I know he left those completely disorganized.”
“I remember,” she muttered. “It’s going to be a nightmare,” she said to Jason.
“I don’t mind,” Jason stated. “We can spend as long as we want here,” he gripped her hand. “This is important for us back in Gotham, it’s important to be thorough.”
“Well,” her Mother started, “I’ll leave you two to work then. I’ll send in some tea for you.”
“Thank you Mother,” she said, watching her Mother disappear into the corridor. She turned to Jason and smiled. “Shall we?”
He bowed slightly and said: “Lead the way, My Lady.”
She smiled and started getting up the stairs, Jason right beside her.
It was charming how much Jason’s behavior towards her had changed so much in a relatively small amount of time. When she had first met him, she feared a loveless marriage, with a husband cold towards her. But, slowly--or as slow as it felt--he had shifted. He started being less sarcastic and more truthful. He would still make sarcastic remarks, but never directed towards her. Jason started being soft and understanding. It was weird to think of a man so big and rough as him as soft and gentle, but it was how she saw him.
She knew he had his insecurities. He had told her once. He had told her he was reluctant to trust her, that he thought he didn’t deserve her. She said he was selling himself short. He replied that she didn’t know most things that he had done. She thought that it didn’t matter because she was falling in love with him.
Love. What a strange feeling. What an overwhelmingly dangerous feeling. It had changed her entire view of the world. She was much more willing to happiness, to the tiny beautiful things of the world. She saw things colored pink. She knew this effect would pass, but she would enjoy it while she could.
She felt his hand brush hers. She looked down at their hands, barely touching and then looked at him with a smile. He looked forward, his face impassive, like he had no idea what he was doing. She held his hand and he squeezed it.  Her mouth quirked up slightly.
She led him right to a giant double door. She released his hand and opened the door, revealing her Father’s office.
It was considerably smaller than King Bruce’s office, but it still held an air of authority. Behind the main desk there was a big window that had a view of the castle entrance.   Both side walls were bookcases, from the ceiling to the ground. In the middle of the room was the King’s desk, untouched.
“Nobody has come in here since he died,” she said quietly. “Except me.”
“I’m sorry for your loss,” he replied.
“It’s fine, it’s been a long time,” she sniffed. “I just miss him.”
Jason remained quiet, examining the room. “Anyways,” she said. “I’ll get those files, and we’ll start looking.”
She pulled a book in the middle of a bookcase. The bookcase retreated and it revealed a big safe. She opened the safe and revealed piles and piles of papers, untouched for years. “Will you help me?” she asked, picking a pile.
He picked up another big pile. He rested it on the floor. “We can pick more up after we go through these,” she said, sitting on the floor. “We’ll be entertained for a while.”
They spent hours reading. She started a system to organize the files into topics. Those that treated about economic affairs were separated into one corner of the room, those of the political affairs into the other. The political affairs were separated into topics: internal politics, external, and finally security. Those were the ones they had to nitpick through. She catalogued it in criminals: Penguin, Riddler, Two-Face, Scarecrow, the lot.
She had through those files at least once in her life. It was interesting to read through once, and she could see Jason was fascinated about the operations her Father had led once. But she found it a bit boring, like she had predicted. Nevertheless she persisted. It was more important than her entertainment.
“Y/N” he called for her, “look at this.”
She got up from the ground and walked towards him. She had discarded her shoes long ago and was almost tempted to change into some pants. “Yes?” she asked.
“Is this the file you talked about?” He gave her the document.
She scanned through the document. It detailed how they had managed to successfully cut off supplies for the fabrication of the fear gas in her kingdom and how, with that, they had managed to ban Scarecrow from there. “It is,” she said. “I can’t believe you found it, I thought we would spend another day looking for it.”
“We already did that,” he said. “We already tried stopping the production of the gas, we discovered an antidote for it, it didn’t stop Crane.”
She smiled. “It’s not only that,” she explained, turning her back and going to the internal affairs pile. “You can’t stop only Crane, you have to redirect his soldiers to a more positive occupation,” she found the file and gave it to him. “See?”
He read through the document quickly. “But we have social programs in Gotham, it still--”
“You have and those social programs are great,” she said. “But it’s not enough for you to take care of the children and the homeless, you have to take care of the poor, those who struggle to get a job and do whatever it takes to not be helped by those social programs.
“You have to direct those men and women to better jobs, give them better chances, educate them and then you’ll defeat Scarecrow fully,” she finished
“Because then they’ll know better than to join him,” he whispered. “It’s brilliant.”
“It’s how you stop them,” she smiled and sat on his lap. “This is the beginning of the end, Jason. We’re on the right path.”
“How didn’t we think of it?” he asked himself. Her hands found his cheeks, caressing it gently.
“You were too focused on the short term solution, and it’s okay,” she assured. “Now, you can do better.”
“I will,” he looked into her eyes and he said. “Thank you.”
        “For what?” she asked, confused.
“For everything,” he whispered. “For agreeing to give up being the sole sovereign of a land to joining Gotham and be its Queen, for being so wonderfully smart, for being patient with me for umm--”
She interrupted him, kissing him with passion. She stopped the kiss and rested her forehead on his. “You don’t need to thank me, Jay,” she said. “I’m doing what’s right.”
“For that I love you,” he responded. She tensed at those words. “Oh, shit, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to--”
“I love you,” she said. “I love you,” she kissed him with a passion.
“Is it too soon?” he mumbled on her lips. “Is it too soon to say that we love each other?”
“I feel like I’ve waited all my life for you,” she mumbled back. “So, no.”
        “Great,” he whispered.
Then he kissed her like his life depended on it. His kiss was filled with a fiery passion she had never felt before. Granted she hadn’t kissed much in her life, but nevertheless this was a new first for her.
His tongue made an entrance in her mouth and she felt a fire run through her. She returned his passion, gripping the base of his hair. He moaned against her mouth, bringing her closer to him. He gripped her waist with determination as his lips moved swiftly against hers.
He tilted her head upwards and his mouth kissed its way to her neck. She hummed and as he bit a sensitive part of her skin. “Jay,” she moaned.
“If you want me to stop, I will,” he replied, his mouth still on her neck pecking where he had just bitten.
        “Don’t stop,” she said.
“You shall have your wish, then, My Princess,” he smirked and kissed the corner of her mouth.
She got impatient and grabbed his face, smashing his lips on hers. She kept on kissing him, running her hands through his hair. He fumbled with the buttons of her dress and she didn’t feel like tensing and running away. She wanted him to continue to fumble with the buttons, she wanted him to open those buttons and take off her dress.
        “Jason,” she mumbled.
He hummed in response, his lips leaving hers. He kissed all over her face and she giggled delighted.
“How about we take this elsewhere?” she suggested, trying to be seductive.
He smirked and looked at her softly. “Are you sure?” he asked.
“Yes, I am,” she affirmed. “I’m ready.”
He smiled and kissed her lovingly. “I love you,” he whispered, he got up and started carrying her towards the door of the office. He couldn’t stop kissing her even if he tried.
“No!” she exclaimed. “There’s a secret bedroom next to here.”
“Is this castle full of secret passages?” he mumbled, his lips trying to find hers like a magnet.
“Yes,” she breathed out. “Pull that book,” she pointed to a book in the top corner of the last shelf of the last bookcase.
He pulled the book and the bookcase retreated revealing a simple wooden door. He opened it and it revealed a King’s bedroom.
“My Father slept here after he pulled all nighters,” she kissed his neck gently. “After he got sick he barely came into the office so it’s been unused for years.”
He smiled and lifted her chin. He looked in her eyes lovingly. “Are you really sure?” he asked once again. “I don’t want you to regret anything.”
“How can I, Jason?” she said. “You’re the best thing to ever happen to me.”
He smiled at her. He closed the door behind him and they laid together.
To think one day he had questioned how he could want a wife. He hadn’t met her before. He hadn’t known he was destined to meet such a wonderful person, determined and strong. He hadn’t known he was meant to love her.
He had been too naïve to think he wouldn’t need her. He needed her more than he needed air, water, food. And he knew she needed him. It was a partnership after all. They needed each other, they trusted each other, and they loved each other.
