Harmony Syndrome Part 5/5

god. GOD the Ezra transmission at the end of season 1 still makes me fuckigng sick to think about, especially with the context of Mira and Ephraim hearing it. To think that for eight years his parents had been ripped away from their son all for the crime of speaking out for hope, never knowing what became of their Ezra, of that tiny seven year old left on the streets scared and crying and alone, to spend days and months and years in that awful place with all of that emptiness and then, and then and then and then.

And then they hear their boy's voice again, and they know him immediately, even without name, because of course they do, that's their son, that's their Ezra, and he's speaking out for hope just as they did, and they've been apart from him longer than they ever had him, but his voice is here, his hope is here, and he talks about how they inspired him, how he's carrying on their legacy of courage and community hope, how he has a new family - thank God he has a family, he is safe and he is loved, even if they will never know who has loved him so much as to earn the title of family - and that hope will one day prevail, just as they taught him it would.

They hear his voice, by god they hear his voice, and it's one of the last sounds they ever hear.

The writing quality drop, the rushed pacing, character assassinations across the board... But hey, if Season 2's story did one thing right, it was to make this scene hit all the harder:

it's kind of funny that we're back at the start, as it was known from the very beginning, as the story always was, the old lore: "the Divine Gate was built in response to the destruction and suffering of the Calamity as the Prime Deities realized was far too much and, as such, they needed to also remove themselves from Exandria to protect it from the ruin that the gods dwelling here brings"

Tumblr keeps popping up to sell me ad free dashboard. But what it doesn't understand is that me and the ads have a sort of symbiosis at this point.

i cant. Stop thinking about hetaoni. its classic literature. i just sit in the dark and think about hetaoni italy for hours at a time.

it's shown in veneziano's scenes in vol 1 that his struggles are:

1) that he doesnt have Any friends (that don't benefit from/use him in some way); he hates being alone

2) that he is a massive coward (probably because he's been kicked around so much) and is VERY easily sent into hysterics

3) that he is a terrible liar and could not be less suited to combat/espionage/military management. this is stated outright (credit hetarchive)

ok. do you understand this character? now put him in a situation where he is forced to

be alone all the time. because . yknow. his friends keep dying in the timeloop. also his friends don't remember that they ever became his friends because, again, they keep dying in the timeloop

2. keep a cool head IN SPITE OF everyone else panicking, face a giant horrific monster time and time again, and deal with things that he is, to speak frankly, used to delegating to other people.

3. LIE. lie to his friends, lie to himself. lie about what he does and doesn't know. lie not just in what he says, but in how he acts. he also has to try and coordinate not his own actions, but the others' actions too, and keep them "on script" (idk if you know this but the nations are a bunch of hotheaded and arrogant people, and they're not really eager to be "directed" by their Actual Enemy, esp one they think so little of as italy, so this is a miserably difficult task)

literally NO ONE could be less qualified for the role of ryuuzu than italy. and a huge portion of the (delicious) tragedy of hetaoni is that the expectation of "maybe it will help italy mature!! y'know, character development through horrific trauma!!" is never realized. he HASN'T evolved into a suave, detached time-loop master. he's tired and frustrated and in grief and so so confused and completely and utterly hopeless... AND HE'S NOT EVEN GOOD AT TIME-LOOPING. HE CONSTANTLY MAKES MISTAKES AND GETS PEOPLE KILLED.

the reason it works is BECAUSE italy is in the wrong genre here. when you think "timeloop protag" you think of a certain jaded, cool character. italy is neither of these things. he's hysterical and the furthest thing from collected. he doesn't have answers. he doesn't have a concrete plan. he barely knows how to tie his shoes.

it's so delicious. veneziano's flaws and weaknesses come into play as running jokes in the original series, but in this kind of situation they leave him directly to blame for so much of the events of hetaoni -- and he knows this -- and it's such a sick twist. i love it !!

Firefly Wedding is so…

It’s so

It’s them. It’s "It’s just a firefly, they’re meant to die soon. Why should I care about the sick, or the poor?"

It’s "I was purposely trying to scare you and push you away to see how far you were willing to go with your act, how desperate you were to play with my feelings as if I was a fool, but it didn’t work."

It’s "I know you’re just using me but now I care. Please keep using me. I need you to need me."

It’s choosing to give her her freedom anyways. Because your love is no longer all about you, no longer selfish. Because this love isn’t just a shallow balm to soothe your complexes anymore.

It’s being betrayed, finally facing the lies and no longer pretending you both don’t know that this is a farce, but desperately wanting to keep it going anyways. It’s "I should hate you now. Why don’t I? Hey, tell me we’ll go through with the plan, tell me you’ll marry me after all. Otherwise, why am I still here? Why don’t I want to leave? You act like you don’t need me but I still need you."

Like that’s so revolutionary for a yandere story. The self-delusion is strong, denial that things have changed despite it being impossible to truly believe, BUT HE STAYS. It’s no longer selfish 😭😭

"I don’t care about you anymore, I won’t help you. Get yourself killed for all I care." <- Jumps to her rescue 3 milliseconds later when she almost falls down a ladder/roof. It happens twice. The ‘lying and trying to emotionally distance yourself from something to protect yourself and not get hurt’ defense mechanism is blatant and it’s failing really bad.

It’s "My sense of duty and goals to have accomplished something useful in my short life are making me do this, but I do want you to stay with me." The yandere stuff here gets turned on its head because what he says is empty where it matters and meaningful where it matters. It’s knowing that if Satoko asks him not to kill anyone he won’t, but knowing that he won’t give up on her no matter what, even if she’s unattainable, even if she’s sickly, even if she pushes him away like just before. It’s so thinly veiled for "I’m determined to see my goal through, but that’s not what I want. If you just so happen to take me away and I don’t try to run away hard enough then we can elope and be free. I want to have an excuse to leave with you. Please give up on marrying me. Please don’t. I want that, but I can’t."

It’s "If I didn’t burn brightly in my short firefly life, then what was the point?"

Except that burning brightly doesn’t have to mean making big achievements, or being useful to your family.

It can be living happily, living for the ones you love, fighting for them. It can be worth to risk it for things that actually matter to you.

It’s giving your heart to someone, figuratively and literally. To lend it to them even if it might get used or battered, for as long as it beats to use your body to protect them, even if you have to sacrifice yourself. A love that burns bright into a bonfire before they both turn to ashes. Unwise but wholehearted.

It’s despite even that, needing grandiose gestures to be able to trust that this is real. It’s needing external cues that prove it to feel safe in their love existing, other people to confirm that he’s not crazy, that this is happening and this is how they both feel. Their love has been fake, both being a warped love and being a lie, only being out of necessity or because the other was the only one willing to offer it to them, offering comfort, safety, support and care. And showing that they care is the most loving of all. It’s despite everything falling back into old habits that "Oh if she was miserably worried for me then that means she’s not indifferent to me! That’s good!" And then once again being taken aback by her, by her earnestness and by her will. Because oh, no, this goes deeper than that. She cares. It’s love.

It’s opening your heart up to love, and both being punished and rewarded for it.

And yet it’s also

The complicated and hurtful nature of love and the joy and light it brings are two sides of the same coin, because that’s what inevitably happens when you care about something. But caring about a firefly isn’t a waste even however short lived it is, or how hard the loss will inevitably hit you. Isn’t their light just such a wonder to witness?

I have a vivid memory of a comic by Rahafwabas where Nightmare calls Killer a freak and is visibly quite unsettled by him (if I remember correctly, it's the same one where he chokes Killer until he passes out while Killer is telling him how to beat his enemies like the ungrateful petty abuser that he is-) and I don't think that's acknowledged enough in this fandom.

Like, even the eldritch horror made of pure negativity that's holding him captive is freaked out by him. And yet I more often see people make Dust the scary one in extended Bad Sanses scenarios. As if that guy isn't literally just a guy who had a particularly bad mental breakdown and has been actively suicidal since. He's the least terrifying of these fuckers, therapy and proper medications would likely allow him to hold down a regular 9 to 5 and I cannot say the same for any of these other guys.

Anyway, rant about Dust aside, we need to make Killer freakier in the horror movie creature sense instead of the horny sense more often.

He literally keeps jars with the remains of his victims, I physically need to see Nightmare be put in the position of the guy who made a deal with the devil and fearing the moment control is gonna slip from his hands the whole way through. All while Killer is simply standing there, smiling. Menacingly.
