I feel like "dating" izana would probably feel more like taking care of a stray cat for the first few months. He's very aloof and probaby doesn't really enjoy physical contact unless he's the one initiating it. He also seems the type to just ghost you for days only to turn up in the middle of the night with bandages on him before he slumps into your arms, exhausted. Though if you point out the similarities hed probaby just scoff at you and call you weird or something.

He also has sharp senses so he'll notice if you smell different than usual or he'll hear your quiet sighs. Unwittingly he memorizes how gentle your touch feels and leans into it without realizing only for the spell to be broken and he once again retreats into his usual cold facade.

Touka Bergatt is dead. Dame Retsu Sion, vassal of House Arleon, Captain of the Lilias Knights Circle, knighted by Her Majesty herself in honour of her noble deeds, readily pleads guilty. This is all very terrible news for Izana, who knows even before Lady Arleon’s letter arrives that he needs to find someone else to pin this on, and fast.

The restoration of order to the North has been a long and arduous process. He’s well aware of this, thanks to both Her Majesty and Lady Arleon keeping him constantly informed, the latter through genuine reports and the former through drunken ramblings. There is no one better suited to Warden of the North than his honourable mother, he knows. So he only really pays attention when it’s Haki giving updates, through her brother or her own correspondence. Touka Bergatt is familiar to him, if only because Haki’s knight says, “You remind me of someone,” and then makes a face and turns tail, and he has to hunt down Haki to ask what the hell that means and the only answer he gets is peals of laughter.

Regardless. He’s aware of Touka Bergatt, and what his existence means for the North. He’s aware of Lady Arleon’s lacking hopes in his and his clan’s true assimilation under the royal banner. He’s aware, even if she treats them affably in public and in private, of Her Majesty’s true thoughts on the matter.

But the North is not his headache to contend with. He has all the rest of Clarines to wrestle with, and a brother to raise. Her Majesty can keep her monopoly on the North, contested only by Arleon. It’s not his problem. It never will be.

Then Touka dies, and he almost thinks it’s a good thing, until the next little tidbit of news is, “Haki’s knight killed him.”

Not that anyone actually calls her Haki’s knight anymore. It’s more Captain of Lilias, or Viscount Sion, or Rugilia’s betrothed(?). He’s not sure where that last one came from, but he’s not particularly concerned. Because to him, first and foremost, she will always be Haki’s knight, because Haki will never let him forget that.

Because the letter on his desk, arriving almost faster than the scandal of the murder, says approximately this: You will have no North, if we lose Retsu.

We, of course, being Haki alone, because she’s never been abashed in leveraging her authority. He’d admired that, once. Still does, if begrudgingly, because. Well. The North has never been his problem. How could he possibly change this?

Especially when the killer herself admits it?

You will have no North, Haki’s letter threatens, so he sighs, leaves his castle to Haruka (You will have no Wistal, he writes, before clarity strikes and he tosses it in the fireplace) and makes his way to winter.

And she’s not even grateful, is the worst part. He uses and abuses his royal authority to get her out of the cells and under his own watch and all she has to say is, “Who are you?” Fine. Maybe he doesn’t need the North. Haki can keep it, along with Her Majesty, along with their dead Bergatt and his very alive and angry followers. He much prefers the Wistal winters to Wilant summers anyway.

Christmas Scenery prompts 004. on an ice rink, careful to dodge the bustling crowd that stumble and rush past.

   It’s nearly the holidays, which means everywhere feels like a kicked anthill — swarms of people like angry ants flooding their surroundings. Some were out searching for last minute gifts, others were rushing for limited time events, dinner reservations, parties, or just taking in the holiday atmosphere. What do they qualify as? Izana supposes it would be the lattermost option if it had to be confined down to a singular option. 

   He’s as graceful on the ice as he is in a fight, the world falling muted for a moment as the string lights cast a warm glow over the ice rink as he slides onto the ice. He casts a knowing look towards Ran, though amusement thrives in his eyes and coats his words when he speaks. It's a rarer lighthearted tone that appears on brief occasions when it was only one or two others rather than everyone.

   “  If you were hoping to see me fail, you’ll only be disappointed.  “  Shion on the other hand – there’s a reason that Izana and Ran were on the opposite side of the ice rink.  

   It’s also less crowded over here. Occasionally the flailing person or wandering group comes gliding across the ice near to them, but it is otherwise peaceful compared to the center and entrance of the rink where people are flocked together in tight bundles and chaotic shrieks and laughter. Being in a crowd or on his own has never seemed to phase Izana ; whenever he stands is his spotlight where he shows as confident and smiling. It was as empowering as it could be terrifying once you knew his strength. ( Such was the fate of those in juvie who had thought he'd be an easy target when he first arrived with a delicate smile — and then learned otherwise when he beat them all to a blooy pulp under his fist. ) His head tilts back, his breath forming a small cloud in the air as the stars shine high above artificial light. He glances at Ran from the corner of his eye briefly before looking ahead again. 

   “  Kakucho and I used to go ice skating sometimes when we were at the orphanage. “  It isn’t often that Izana speaks of his past, and certainly not of the times before juvie. Not to anyone other than Kakucho at least. Maybe it’s a Christmas miracle in its own right that he decides to share some coveted personal information. " Sort of. " He adds as an after thought with a chuckle. " We didn't have proper skates most of the time. Mostly because we snuck out at times. Only on occasion did we 'properly' skate. "  He cracks a smile at the memory when he looks more directly towards Ran this time and then back towards the ice..

I feel like if youre dating izana you're also sort of with Kakucho as well? It's a mutal love of sorts.

And I don't think kakucho would be jealous or upset about you entering izanas life (not that he would even complain even if he could). In fact I feel like hed probably be pretty happy that Izana found someone to love like that. The both of you end up bonding over your shared love of Izana. And though your "king" may be selfish and strict the both of you are his eternally loyal and adoring servants.

Kakucho also probably acts as sort of translator/middle man for Izana wherever you guys get in an argument. Though he does have a bias towards izana and will take his side in most arguments. Even begrudgingly, but he does try and compromise. It's not the healthiest but he's sweet enough you can't help but give in.

I think itd be funny if Kakucho sort of catches feelings for you while the two of you hang out. He probably wouldnt even realize it until it just hits him and he goes "Uh oh" because 1) youre izana's lover already and 2) hes probably never really had a crush like that before. It'll probably go unrequited but i think it would morph into a similar unflinching loyalty he has w Izana. It's a comfortable companionship. Both of you sharing silent glances that contain entire conversations. Hushed giggles as you two wander the streets. Kakucho would probably offer to teach you some self defense but since his idea of "training" is raiding criminal organizations you declined.

As for Izana, he wont show it but i think hed be a little happy that the two of you are getting along. Just a little. Though if he sees that the two of you are too close for (his) comfort he will pull you away.

Spoilers for the different timelines:

In the bad timeline where Izana becomes the defacto leader of touman, you'll see even less of Kakucho and your relationship will be strictly profressional. He'll visit now and then but usually its just to tell you that izana will be home late. The time you two do get together slowly becoming less and less candid as you dance around the elephant in the room. The both of you know that Kisaki is nothing but a bad influence on Izana, but neither you nor Kakucho can truly do anything about it. At least Izana has his "kingdom", so you guess it can't be all bad.

In the Botan timeline, I feel like his crush might turn into a crutch because the both of you loved izana and now hes gone. And while he wouldnt be as bad as Izana, i can definitely see Kakucho becoming protective to the point of being posessive. Mostly because he's worried how Mikey, and by extension Sanzu, would react to your existence. But also because youre the last piece of Izana he has, just as he is to you. And maybe, he'll start to understand the way Izana felt about you. Its a doomed relationship but its the closest thing to love the both of you will get.

Isn't that nice.

In the good timeline Kakucho is practically apart of the family. And while you are close with the other members of Tenjiku, you talk with Kakucho the most. He still acts as a mediator between you two but his judgements are a little less biased. He also helps around the house a bit too now and then. If you and Izana do ever get married he will cry the entire ceremony.
