ISAT's OST is very economical in that it constantly reuses one central motif. I want to go on a very brief tangent to cover this motif because I feel like that's worth doing. ---What the fuck is a motif?--- i want you to repeat something with me, okay? deep breaths. A MOTIF AND A LIETMOTIF ARE NOT THE SAME. A MOTIF AND A LIETMOTIF ARE NOT THE SAME !!! PLEASE DONT USE THEM INTERCHANGEABLY MY HEART HURTS EVERY TIME !!!!!! thank you. so, a motif is a little piece of music information - usually a melody, but not always, i think? - that is reused and changed. It doesn't represent anything, really. That's the difference between it and a lietmotif - a lietmotif represents a person place or thing, and a motif just doesn't. ---Great, So what's the motif?--- it has two parts, this first part:

this is the second part:

(which has the last part change a little bit when repeated in order to resolve.) There's some nice rythmn made with the dotted crotchet and the quaver, but nothing crazy like syncopation. It's mostly conjunct, but there's one or two little leaps in the melody. It's a fairly basic melody -- perfect for changing and adjusting to the needs of each piece.

this is used in every single track in the game! I'm not kidding, it's in every single one, try and listen for it! it's a very smart use of a motif. Onto the actual piece of music!

It uses the motif as it's melody (see above), and while I won't cover that again, I will cover the harmony! The instruments are fairly simple, there's a chiptune piano and some kind of strings (?) helping with the harmony in the background. The two play together throughout.

While the key will obviously change between pieces and songs, harmony is a very important and sneaky way to hide meaning in a piece. Harmonies are also very hard and hurt my brain, so if i'm wrong feel free to tell me. (Also i hate reading bass clef)

[Dsus -> Esus4 -> G (kindanotreally) -> A sus4 -> A // ii -> iii -> V -> VI] A lot of suspended chords - suspended chords don't really hold on major or minor, so this leaves it feeling a bit unstable + airy. But, each suspended chord eventually resolves onto the major of each chord, so it still feels major. The thing that decides if a chord is major or minor is generally the second note in that chord - 3 semitones away from the first note on a major chord, and 2 on a minor chord. Suspended chords have the second note be either 1 (BUT IT'S NAMED SUS2????) or 4 semitones away (sus2 / sus4). This lets it dance around either, and it keeps tension until it resolves into either one. [ to quote directly again - "and then the chord progression you outline seems like gobbeldygook to me. measure 1's downbeat is not a Dsus chord, it's pretty clearly a power chord, and it leads into an F not an Esus4. measure 2 is mostly fine though, only think is that it is definitelly a G chord! if you wanted to be pedantic you could say it's a Gomit5 but i really wouldnt bother specifiying that and whoops your roman numerals are wrong! the big issue is that this 2 bar phrase DOES contain a tonic chord. in fact its the first of the measure! this is pretty clearly in D dorian, but i think you've confused it for C major since they share a key signature. but nope! given that correction and the ones above the roman numerals looks more like a [I -> III -> IV -> V]." YEAH IM REALLY BAD AT THIS I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY 😭😭]

[Dsus -> F -> G -> Gsus -> Asus4 (kind of???????) // ii -> IV -> V -> ii -> ii] this little countermelody continues (i'm not sure if it's because i'm looking at the piano version and OOPS it's too late now, or because there is just a countermelody. what am i saying this would be countermelody either way????) and layers quavers over a crochet and minim harmony. The harmony itself mirrors the same as before - loads of sus chords with occasional, brief resolutions to major chords. But, what's weird is that I haven't seen a single I / Tonic chord yet? there's not a single chord that's just the first note of the key. That's kinda weird - most pieces even start with that. There's something there - technically, we're not at the start of the journey, we're at the very end of it, the very end of this year-long journey that all of the character's have been taking. [ corrections: "closer with measures 3-4 its just that measure 4 is an an Asus4 to A and that adjusting for you being in the wrong key the chord progression is still that same [I -> III -> IV -> V]" ]

[Esus -> Gsus2 -> C -> Esus -> Gsus2 -> C // iii -> V -> I -> iii -> V -> I] WHOOPS I LIED. there's the tonic chord! there's C! There's a good reason for a tonic to appear here, though - we have a perfect cadence, and that is very interesting. Those roman numerals are about the placement of a chord within a key. kind of - it's important for stuff. A cadence is the harmonic ending to a phrase - in this case, a perfect cadence, from V -> I. This sounds "complete" to our ears, it feels like the piece could end there. what's weird is that it repeats twice, and keeps going on the second one. Furthermore, the melodic phrase is ending here, the motif is ending. This would be a far more "complete" ending if it stopped here. But it doesn't.

It changes from block chords to ostinatos (MIGHT BE THE WRONG NAME.), but each of these semi quaver / demi semi quaver progressions return back to one note while playing out a countermelody at the same time, still allowing for some kind of harmony. This change also builds up the pace in the piece, letting it build to the ending - this is the only thing that really drives the piece beyond this point, this building rythmn. Even then, it stops on this little crotchet chord! And then keeps going, into what is probably the most interesting part. [corrections - "a couple of things wrong with this one. first of all i analyzed the chords for measures 5-8 as [Fmaj7 -> Gadd9 -> Amin7 -> Cmaj7-> Fmaj7 -> Gadd9 -> E -> A] with roman numerals: [III-> IV -> V -> V/III -> III -> IV -> V/V -> V]. no PAC here! also, even if this was actually in the key of C major there is no V -> I in the bass and none of the soprano movement need to be an actual PAC. just a bunch of movements by fifth :]. you say the rythym is the only thing pushing the piece forward, and while it sure is definitely a fun effect that's building some nice tension the constant movement by fifth's is definitely also contributing to the tone. be wary of blaming an entire piece's success on one element!"]

[Asus -> Gsus -> G -> Esus4 // VI -> V -> V -> iii] In terms of intrumentation, something weird happens here - the chiptune piano falls away into a far more real-sounding one, while the strings stay the same within this section. in terms of harmony, again! tons of suspended chords, with one or two resolutions that keeps the piece feeling major. This cadence is. Weird. [V -> iii] isn't really a resolution at all, and as far as i could find it doesn't have a formal name the way some others do. some parts resolve (the E notes) but others don't, (the A notes), so it ends up feeling only half-satisfying. This makes sense - the music is gonna loop, because this is game music, so it does make sense to have it not resolve. But. It resolved perfectly eariler - we did have a perfect cadence. So then, why break into this tiny little two bar ending, that doesn't even resolve? That can smoothly go back onto itself, and also back into the beginning of the piece? This part is quieter, the demi semi quavers have rested back into minims, and it feels a little bit like an anti-climax to the build from earlier - it doesn't feel like a dramatic ending that the build was maybe working towards, more like a quiet moment. Despite that, the texture in this two bar section never thins - the piano is never left behind by the strings - the strings don't get quieter either, just the piano. Why is this two bar section here, then? Why end on this, and not on the part before? Two bars, huh. What a strange number to choose. [corrections - "chord progession is: [A -> G -> E -> A]. i'd argue that the previous secondary dominant to the A tonicized the A, placing us in the key of the domimant (A minor). so because of that i''d say the roman numerals are [I -> VII -> V -> I].

maybe pedantic but i dont think its actually that weird or bizzare of a choice for the chiptune melody to be replaced by an acoustic(-sounding) piano. the isat soundtrack consistently uses both acoustic and virtual instruments! this is just establishing that and letting the listener know to expect more of this specific element of the soundtrack. as title themes tend to do!

and the piece is quite resolved by the end actually. if i believed what you believed about the sheet music and never listened to the track i could see how i could think that, but giving the track a listen and using your ear to sus out details reveals how resolved it actually is!" thank you for the corrections im real bad at this]

I wish my autoimmune disease made me specially abled instead of regularly ill. I'm a pro now at managing constantly-changing treatment regimens, coordinating monthly (if not more) doctor visits & endless bloodwork, but alas- that's not a superpower. it's the day-to-day reality of living with a disability.

I can only speak as a someone who was relatively healthy before I got sick, but the mourning period I went through was brutal. getting diagnosed with an incurable disease brings a metric fuckton of grief with it, requiring a huge perspective shift.

I'm an intensely independent, self-reliant person- sometimes to my own detriment. unsurprisingly, coming to terms with this new reality was no small task.

when I was finally diagnosed, I made a playlist (my go-to coping mechanism). I played one song on a loop because of its namesake line, & it still packs an emotional gut-punch for me: "I needed to lose you to love me."

I was angry at my body for 'failing' me- for having zero control over such an all-important outcome (my health). I had to reconcile myself to the reality that my life was different now. I had to lose my old view of myself to love the new version that needed more sleep, more sick days, more accommodations.

it took me years to get comfortable using the term "disability" to help describe what's now a big part of my lived experience (especially since mine is invisible). it went from being a foreign term I could've never imagined using for myself to my bridge to self acceptance.

(note: I have my own complex relationship with the term, as do most people. I’m talking about the harm in equating terms here, not implying that anyone should use these words to describe themselves. that’s entirely up to the individual.)

there's nothing romantic about my disease- a quality that "specially abled" imbues for me. do I- & all disabled people- have special abilities, valuable experience & unique skills? you bet your ass we do. one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

every person has the right to choose the terms they're comfortable with to describe their experience. for me? treating "disability" like a dirty word 1) glosses over (if not entirely erases) the very real, life-altering struggle inherent to my condition, & 2) muddies the waters, potentially making it even more difficult for disabled people to get the accommodations we need when we need them.

using terms like "specially abled" isn't some evil, awful thing, though. if anything, it tells me that the person is trying to be delicate & respectful with their word choices. I genuinely appreciate that, even if it's misguided (in my opinion).

when in doubt? listen to how people describe themselves. honor them by using the same descriptors (unless they tell you otherwise). choose to believe people when they tell you how terms affect them.

forgive yourself if you don't always get it right- who does? perfection isn't the point- effort is the point. kindness is the point. respect is the point. how we get there is as varied as people, but it starts with the words we use.

I'd like to know how or why things changed for Jungkook, what happened in the past that brought him so close to madness.

A/N: Obviously warning for Yandere content, psychological horror, mental illness. Don't read if that makes you uncomfortable, I'm not responsible for what you consume.

Jungkook has always been a little.. vulnerable, mentally. He's easily stressed, and stress makes him act irrationally sometimes- but no one ever thought it would become an issue, down the line.

He's just soft. It'll be fine when he grows older.

Wrong. It just got worse.

So much so that after yet another incident of someone finding out his phone number and mass calling him, he's brushed off as no issue at all. That he's old enough to deal with this on his own now- 'You're 21 now, that's an adult, Jungkook. And adults have to make their own decisions.'

Suddenly. Huh?

Suddenly he's supposed to be independent.

After years and years of being babied and belittled and having everything chewed up for him so he wouldn't have to use his teeth for anything. Suddenly he's supposed to hunt down his own food and provide for himself.

And it's when he realizes it, in the darkness of his small private apartment he got scolded for buying last year.

He's nothing but a product. No one actually cares for him- only for what he represents. A brand. A puppet. Something to buy. Nothing to love.

He's told to just ignore it, use another phone or request another number and just move on from it. But how can he move on if there's people out there who call him nothing but a dog for simply missing a comment on a livestream? He can't just play after everyone's tune, there's too much music at this point, beats bleeding into one another so much so that he can't find a spot to place his feet any longer.

He keeps tripping, and everyone blames him for it.

They've even taken his phone away from him entirely, years back. Now they're doing different things to control him. Tell him to concentrate, loose weight, gain it back, loose it again. Get surgery, don't get it, or rather get it but hide it. Promote this, just to get blamed if the brand does something stupid, stop promoting it just to get called a coward.

Die, but stay alive, but also die, but also keep going. What's going on?

Right?

Is there a middle to choose instead?

He's got no voice. He sings, loudly so, stable as ever- but his voice doesn't belong to himself. Is what's wanted, it's what fits the concept, just like the rest of him.

One day he's the boyfriend, next he is the brother, then he's the boy next door, just to become the sexiest crush all the girls want. What is he?

Who is he?

He hasn't called back the company, has locked his doors and shut the blinds. He doesn't want to do this any longer, this is all just insanity, doesn't anyone see this? Is everyone just so obsessed with wealth that they don't care about being honest?

He's walking alongside Han River, hood deep over his head, facemask hiding what's exposed, clothes dark. He doesn't want to be known, by anyone, ever again. But even if he moved to the other end of the world, starting again as a no-name is a luxury he'll never be granted.

Someone's sitting on the ground, clothes wetly sticking to the skin. Long hair. A girl? He's not sure.

You're moving, barely so, shivering, body trembling in the cold temperature. He lends you his jacket, eyes wide open as they look at yours. You're like a scared little animal, nothing behind those eyes that's coherent, but most importantly-

there's no recognition.

Even when he pulls his mask down a little to test it- you don't seem to know who he is. You don't talk at all, even when asked for your name.

You just cry, scared, terrified, leaning closer to him when he tries to get up.

Is that affection? Or maybe what affection could feel like?

If so, this is affection without any thought behind it. Nothing to gain. Nothing to receive. You just want to be close to him. To him.

Not to him.

It's so wrong. God it's so wrong, it makes him nauseous, makes him panic a little when he realizes that he somehow managed to get you into his home, where you now sleep in his bed, freshly showered, arms wrapped in bandages, hair dried, dressed in his softest clothes, safely tucked beneath the covers.

He should call the cops. But then he'd be blamed, right? They'll think he's insane, a creep, a criminal- and when it get's out, he's a wanted man, even if he somehow doesn't get put into jail.

No. He can't do that.

He can't have that.

But he can have you.

And he wants to have you.

Someone who wants him.

And not the version of him staring back at him from the billboard across the street.

You're just what he needs.

And he'll become all that you'll need in return.

I’m making a headcannon that cloud guy would go after classical trolls and country trolls the most. Because A: classical is very refined, no funny business type of trolls who freak out over small things like poor manners, and B country trolls are very hardworking trolls who don’t play around till a jobs done.

(To me) Cloud Guy is all about messing with people (who to him) “can’t take a joke” and goes after those who are more serious and less playful. Makings country and classical, perfect targets.

I feel like he would leave techno Branch alone since he’s more happier and because techno trolls are like pop trolls (who I’m pretty sure cloud Guy leaves alone except for branch) but this is mostly just some headcannon stuff, since cloud Guy sucks and doesn’t care who he messes with.

Cloud Guy does for the most part seem to target people who don't care for pranks or have an attitude of someone he thinks 'can't take a joke'. 3 of his victims (Branch, Laguna, Dante) are serious types as well as introverts and one step further they all three honestly seem to be autistic coded to me.

This is in part one of my biggest gripes with TTBGO/Trollstopia Cloud Guy. A lot of his bullying sort of perfectly aligns with the kind of bullying that neurodivergent people face, particularly in schools. I've talked about my own experiences but it's very frustrating when someone's saying something to you and people are laughing and you don't even fully get why it's so funny, you just know they're picking on you.

Cloud Guy especially seems to pick on them in ways where they can't even fully understand or verbalize the issue. Like the one hug event. Branch isolated himself for 20 years and the Snack Pack is constantly jumping to the assumption that Branch has 0 idea what any holidays are but Poppy explains the 'clouds don't count' as if it's obvious. This bit is also another thing that clues me in to Branch being autistic: Literal and Black and White thinking. He takes things at face value and often times extracts the wrong message from a sentence. The word 'Troll' is used interchangeably with 'Person', so 'One troll' could be reasonably interpreted to him as 'One person' unless followed by 'other species not included'. She didn't specify that Clouds, Bergens, etc etc were exceptions so Branch would not have assumed that.

While Techno Branch is way more fun loving, he shares a lot of traits with Laguna, another victim of Cloud Guys. I could see Cloud Guy messing with the both of them.

Side note: Do you think Synth could launch him into the sky? He has water powers, clouds are water...

Hi! 👋 Question for you about Thai language/culture.

I know that the polite particle for men is "khrab" (or "khrap/khab/kub/korab" etc), and for women it is "kha". I've gotten pretty decent at hearing it in context and understanding why it is being used in any given situation by a character.

Sometimes, a male character will use "kha". And I've also gotten explanations from other Thai speakers about why that choice is being made - to be cute, to sound sweet, to be soft, etc. Kang uses it to be sweet with Sailom in Dangerous Romance, and Ton used it a lot in 23.5 to be sweet and flirty with all the women around him. I also know that sometimes out gay men will use "kha".

My question is, is there any scenario in which a female character might choose to use the male particle, i.e., a woman saying "khrab"?

So 'gendered' language in Thailand can be tricky... because Thai gender politics are different than, let's say the US, where non-binary identifiers exist and are more common/openly used in daily conversation.

In Thailand, while a general "rule" exists, it's not strictly prescriptive. Men can use kha and women can use khrap, it's really just dependent on the speaker and the situation. For example, (like you said) in the same way that men choose to use kha when being sweet and endearing, women can use khrap to indicate authority and assertiveness. (Pronunciation comes into play here too where kha could have the same effect... it's all very confusing hehe)

Overall, it shouldn't have to be interchangeable in only these specific cases. Informally and in familiar circles it is not unusual to use whatever particle you feel like using (if they're being used at all)... but this is not the case everywhere. Most people might find it strange and want to 'correct' you— to say the least. The reason you might not see women using the male particle as often is because it's viewed as "less acceptable".

In more formal settings, though, it's probably best to adhere to gender particle norms.

In my opinion, general non-adherence to gender correlated language (which is constantly changing) is an effort, led by less conservative folks in Thailand, to be more inclusive. I, personally, am all for it... though I know it won't always be met with acceptance.

Whenever I see sum1 talking abt how gross and disgusting and traumatizing cis men are, but double back and then say "oh well not trans men tho" it makes me feel like less of a boy if that makes sense.

I know that people have been fear-mongered into never trusting cis men specifically, but I just can't help but feel like they're downplaying MY identity as a boy, and saying that I'm "less of a boy" compared to cis guys.

"Oh yeah I only hang out w/ girls and trans men" why are you grouping me in with people who I clearly have expressed I am not a part of ? And why do you express disgust at masculine features *I* want to have ?

Is it because you actually don't think I'm a boy, and you think you're allowed to just disregard my identity because I don't look like a boy ? Because if so, you're a real fucking awful trans ally.

hello! i was wondering if you knew how i could write a character who starts off good and everything but just with this slight jealously but slowly grows extremely envious over the course of the story and slowly has their good traits overshadowed by this overwhelming envy? as someone who doesn’t really feel that way towards others i find it hard to imagine envy being so all consuming that it becomes someone’s downfall

Jealousy Causes "Good to Bad" Arc for Character

[Trigger warning for toxic/abusive behaviors...]

First, it's important to note that jealousy and envy are not the same thing and are not interchangeable...

Jealousy is about people/relationships, and is rooted in fear of losing that person or relationship. It can include fear the relationship will become less important to the other person, fear someone else will take away the connection with the other person, and fear of being replaced by someone else in that person's life.

Envy is about things... possessions, qualities, or achievements, and is rooted in a fear of never having that thing for ourselves.

So, you would be jealous that your co-worker bestie has been hanging out more with another co-worker lately, but you would be envious of that co-worker's recent promotion that you wanted for yourself.

I'm not sure if your question is specific toward envy, jealousy, or both, but I'll do the best I can to answer with both in mind.

In reference to jealousy: it's interesting to note that jealousy is hard-wired into our brains, and is believed to be a throwback to early humanity when jealousy served as a tool to help us preserve beneficial relationships.

It's also important to note that jealousy occurs in the emotion centers of the brain, which is wired separately from the reasoning centers of our brain, allowing emotion to override logic where jealousy is concerned. For that reason, when jealous feelings occur, it's important to identify them and deal with them appropriately. Otherwise, the feelings can snowball into intense emotions and behavior.

For the purpose of the following: A = jealous character, B = loved one, C = other person

1 - Noticing B + C Situation and Feeling Jealousy - This is obviously step one, having them notice B + C's interactions and feeling slight jealousy.

2 - Attempt to Identify and Deal Appropriately with Jealous Feelings - Normal identification and appropriate dealing with jealous feelings looks like this: paying attention to what thoughts/feelings are occurring and why, turning focus inward to examine self's role in why things are changing, taking own insecurities into account, opening up and addressing situation with person or someone else, opting for trust, staying calm. So, in the "slight jealousy" phase, you can have them go through these steps and come to a place where they temporarily feel better.

3 - Failing to Identify and Deal Appropriately with Jealous Feelings - But as things between B + C evolve, or as A perceives an evolution taking place (even if it's not), they begin to drop the ball on these points of identification and analysis. They fail to recognize their growing jealousy, they they fail to question why these feelings are occurring and analyze what their own role might be, they ignore their own insecurities--and potentially do things that cause these insecurities to get worse--choose not to opt for trust, and slowly lose their grip on calm.

4 - Unchecked Jealousy Becomes Toxic - A becomes suspicious of B (and possibly C), constantly doubts them, constantly doubts self (if there are echoes of reason trying to come through), constantly doubts others speaking reason, are unable to trust B or C, become so afraid of betrayal they're constantly on the lookout for it, become preoccupied with B and C (where they are, what they're doing, who they're with, etc.), hover over B and C when able to.

5 - Toxic Behavior Turns Abusive and Dangerous - They begin to stalk B and/or C, begin to attempt to control B and/or C, try to bait and entrap B and/or C to "catch them" in acts of "betrayal," engaging in emotional and/or physical abuse and/or abduction and/or false imprisonment, etc.

In reference to envy: you'll want to start with establishing A's dissatisfaction with their own life. What is it they're lacking? Financial success? Business success? Political success? Popularity? A certain title or position?

Next, you'll want to establish which character/s have the thing/s they're lacking. Maybe B has the financial success A so badly wants. Maybe C got the promotion they wanted. Maybe D has the social popularity A wishes they had.

Now, you'll establish A's belief that they themselves are more deserving of these things than the characters who have them, along with dissatisfaction and bitterness with those things being given to the "undeserving."

Over time, the envy will become increasingly more toxic. They will refuse to congratulate the achievements of the people they envy, refuse to celebrate their successes, downplaying those successes, express unhappiness when the others succeed, experience joy when the others fail, preoccupation with what others are doing, constant scrutiny/judgement of what others are doing, becoming upset (and eventually even enraged) when others compliment them, spreading rumors or lies about the others in an attempt to downplay or delegitimize their successes. In extreme cases, this may lead to similar behaviors as seen in #4 and #5.

Purple/Pink Gate - Another one I can't remember if it's already been covered. Despite most fan artists color picking a dusty rose for Crona's hair, lavender wigs are still more common for cosplayers. I am a pink wig truther.

Shinobi - Okay, this is a PS2 game that predates the manga by two years. The main mechanic is a katana that sucks the lifeforce/soul of the user unless it's constantly fed other souls. I am fairly sure this is the inspiration of the uncanny sword. Even the cover art gives post time skip vibes.

If not, both pieces of media have to be referencing the same thing.

Zagreus + Dionysus : Death the Kid's role in SE has similarities with the god of the rebirth. Particularly the part of the legends where he's dismembered and eaten. There is some confusion in greek mythology if these are just different names for the same god or just two gods whose roles overlap, thus why I put both names.

Ragnarok - Particularly how he stops being a character after Salvage. Will also check off for mention of the war of the gods.

Merch - There's a lot of merch out there. Apparently they made a speaker inspired by bonus art. I'm sure there's a bunch of official stuff I haven't seen before.

Official Cosplay - There's a few talking points here that come to mind. Like how Soul is the only weapon with an official cosplay prop. Any Spirit, Ragnarok or Tsubaki props you see were made by the cosplayer. Death the Kid rings get sold one at a time, even if they're advertised as a set.

Translations goofs - There's little things like Afreet and Kishen being used interchangeably in the sub. The Witch hunter evolutions have a few different names. I'm sure there's other translation stuff that I don't know about that might pop up.

Demi-god Black Star - Another umbrella square. Black Star's arc towards the end seems to be referencing something specific. Idk what it is, but Marie goes out of her way to put him and Death the Kid on the same level and snubs Maka at the end of the manga.

The Dread Queen - Comparing Chrona to Persephone is really common in the Kirona crowd. After listening to some deeper dives on the topic there's actually precedence for them to be an allusion ancient underworld goddess that predates Persephone and Hades, but not the abduction myth. They're never referred by name only by titles. Crona's name being literally Dark One in Japanese fits with this theme, as well as usually being referred to as the Demon Sword rather than by their given name. This could be more coincidence than anything else though.

Unlocalized content - The iceberg has already covered the games, but there might be audio dramas or other in-character content that didn't make it's way over when SE was popular in the US.

Daniel hides Sean's cigarettes, especially as they get older. Sean can usually figure out his hiding places okay, but getting to them is a different matter since they're usually only accessible re Daniel's power. Daniel sometimes lets him have one on a special occasions (or post-gang war murder attempt), though.

Daniel thought "Sean" was interchangeable with "Mom" as a little(r) kid because they sound kind of similar and did, in his mind, similar things (Sean couldn't decide whether this made him upset or filled a bit of the gap from Karen's departure). He figured the distinction out, eventually. more or less.

Sean used to go as wild as Daniel for Chock-o-Crisps, before he became a teenager and decided he was too grown-up to be openly invested in sweets. Daniel loves Chock-o-Crisps in part because he associates them with his big brother being happy.

Matching wolf tattoos. Daniel grows taller than his brother (much to Sean's chagrin) but his wolf is a little bit smaller.

Daniel is the one who does a lot of the work caring for Sean's eye and gets him the cool glass eyeball, out of both guilt (no matter how many times Sean promises he doesn't blame him) and because he loves that level of trust and intimacy

Sean is the one who talks with most of the customers at their shop and they sometimes joke about the bites constantly visible on his neck and his wrists, telling him he must have a rambunctious girlfriend. Sean smiles and blushes and doesn't make eye contact with his little brother, who's usually smirking in the background like the chompy little shit he is.

Machines of Wartime AU character study #1: Unparalleled Innocense

Buckle the fuck in folks this is gonna be another long one because I'm passionate about how I characterize them here. Long post again, so more info comes after the cut. Note for reference and clarity that throughout this post UI will be referred to with they/ae pronouns quite interchangeably, so instances of either set are in reference to them.

No real major content warnings here, although I'll give a small warning for self destructive behavior, as well as a more minor precautionary warning for brief mentions of neglect and dehumanization from their admins.

UI is, essentially, a high energy constant stimulation seeker at their core, and a lot of what they do shows it in some way. It's a major reason (along with far less personality shaping going into their generation) behind why they used to be quite mean here before making steps towards improvement. They were never taught a healthy outlet to seek stimulation, so they will try pretty much anything to see what sticks; pretty much anything that gets a form of reaction from others is included in what does stick.

Spreading rumors and other bits of info makes people react, whether good or bad. This means results. People who learn them often further spread them. This means even more results. And when you build a reputation for yourself as "the mean rumor spreader", these results will get back to you all over again. Messages, reactions, more people coming to them to start shit; it's all results and reactions and stimulation. It's an easy way to get what ae want... even if it means people thinking less of aer for it. But hey, can't get lonely if you're constantly too stimulated or too busy seeking more of everything to really think about how nobody quite genuinely likes you! It's easy when you don't let yourself focus on feelings, just shut down any attempts at self awareness!

The reason they're like this, in reality, primarily comes not from being truly mean or spiteful at their core, but just from being built in a way where lack of proper guidance or true care from their creators after creation has left them both feeling a little abandoned ("why bother behaving when nobody cares about me anyway") and physically incapable of tolerating understimulation ("if I'm not doing enough it almost physically hurts"). They have incredibly high processing power; a measurable amount more than even Pebbles, and Pebbles and UI are respectively the first and second iterators of their generation to be created. If they're not using enough of that processing power, it drives them up a wall a little; they genuinely cannot stand being in a state where they're not receiving enough stimulation of some sort. They hate boredom and lack of activity and even just sitting still for too long. Movement, sound, reading messages, running 5 background processes at once, taking on multiple high intensity projects, whatever; it's all the same as long as it gives aer what their systems crave. More stimulation. And saying and doing shit to get reactions is heavily related to that; it's negative stimulation seeking behavior that was never properly taught as "don't do this it's not healthy", because quite frankly aer admins don't care what ae do, as long as ae have a high work output. They're just an iterator after all, right?

And then we come to why they're not really like this anymore, way more toned down in how they act. One big reason is simply time and maturity; they've gained more life experience and kind of just grown away from this sort of behavior in favor of better outlets. They're still young and reckless, but not as overwhelmingly so after a good few decades of time to live and grow. They've seen that it makes people not like them to act like that; even now they still have no real friends due to their reputation. It makes them lonely now that they've calmed down enough to actually think about how others view them instead of living in the moment; they don't want to be lonely. They don't want to be sad. Ae don't want to experience negative emotions, because feelings as a whole tend to be very intense for aer and bad ones really suck to deal with. And they want to get away from these feelings.

Another big reason is because of Pebbles, as was alluded to a little in this post. He's their partner, he cares about them, and they care about him too. For one thing, they don't want their own behaviors to reflect poorly on him by proxy; they're self aware enough now to see that this could happen, and they don't want anyone else to be made to feel like a bad person simply because of being associated with them. They don't want this for someone they love. For another thing, he honestly just makes them feel seen. He can see that they struggle quite badly when understimulated; but unlike aer admins who simply ignore anything that's not work and results and responsibilities, he actually cares enough to help them find a healthy outlet to, well, actually properly stim instead of leaving them to seek unhealthy, and ultimately self destructive since it blows up their ability to maintain friendships, methods. He views them as an entire person deserving of respect, not just a machine with a purpose. That's why they're actually together quite a lot; he's willing to give them what they need to get that stimulation in a more healthy way, whether that be engaging them in direct conversation or letting them constantly fidget with his clothes or just giving them a good squeeze because ae like the feeling. He loves them and cares about them and will go out of his way to keep them happy and engaged and focused on more positive outlets. He involves them in projects a lot because they're actually a very good worker when they care about the task at hand, and they love being delegated tasks to engage with! Giving them more tasks + generally more ideas on how to properly and healthily stim is exactly what they need, and he gives it to aer. It's a big part in why the two of them have a very strong relationship now, the level of genuine care and respect they've cultivated for each other.

They're actually getting a lot better now! They've mostly moved away from the more toxic sorts of behaviors they used to display, since they now have much better outlets. They're not a completely different person personality wise; they're still quite socially driven, and ae do love a good bit of interesting information. They're just mature enough now to not spread things they shouldn't. Ae still don't have true friends really, but they're working towards that and finally starting to gain acquaintances who actually like them and value them for who they are as a person. And they're a lot happier for it; they feel seen and valued and like they have actual reasons to try and be better now. They are loved, they are seen, and they are better off for it.

TL;DR UI is essentially a high powered supercomputer with ADHD that went completely unmanaged for a long time, and as a result they started seeking out negative stimming behaviors. They were never shown anything more healthy as an alternative. They matured over time and were finally shown better stimming methods by someone who cares about them, and it's helped them grow and improve a lot.
