Hackers Use Fake Solana Phantom Updates to Steal Crypto (Report)

Scammers have reportedly sent consumers a new Solana Phantom security update assuring it will grant additional protection.

However, wrongdoers have installed password-stealing malware through airdropped NFTs and used them to drain cryptocurrency from the affected wallets.

Another Scam in the Space

A recent coverage revealed that the scheme started two weeks ago when NFTs called “PHANTOMUPDATE.COM” or “UPDATEPHANTOM.COM” reached some Phantom users. Upon opening, they were advised to click on the enclosed link or visit a website to download and install the latest security upgrade.

“Phantom requires all users to update their wallets. This must be done as soon as possible. Failing to do so may result in loss of funds due to hackers exploiting the Solana network. Visit www.updatePhantom.com to get the latest security update,” the message stated.

Once choosing one of the two options, victims automatically downloaded a batch file named “Phantom_Update_2022-10-08.bat.” Accepting the conditions guided users to another file called windll32.exe. According to the cybersecurity system VirusTotal, though, that feature is a password-stealing malware that attempts to drain browser information, including history, passwords, and cookies.

The main purpose of the hackers was to use passwords and steal digital assets from the victims’ cryptocurrency wallets.

Individuals who have installed that malicious file should scan their computer with an antivirus program and then move their holdings from their existing Phantom wallet to a new one. Changing their passwords on all sites related to cryptocurrency trading is also a must.

Having a unique password for each website could be the best idea as it prevents credential leaks between different databases.

Despite the aforementioned fraud, 2022 has been a rather successful year for the Solana-based cryptocurrency wallet Phantom.

There are so many parts to moving (going through and getting rid of stuff, selling this house, market research, finding the next house, buying the next house, saying goodbyes) that the 3.5 in between weeks from leaving TX and arriving in Georgetown have been overlooked. But to be fair we didn’t know they wanted a rent back until they had already accepted our offer.

We priced out air bnbs but there are a few issues. First we still need to be within 90 minutes from Justin’s job for him to commute. Second, it’s summer, so a lot of places are already booked for certain days or weeks and we want a continuous stay for George and the cat. Third, service fees for 3.5 weeks are woah. It’d be cheaper/easier at this point to stay in a hotel. Not quite sure how that will work but it’s temporary so we’ll figure it out.

In positive news, helping my friend house hunt has made me appreciate Georgetown even more. It’s so close to his work, it’s (much) closer to the water and Maine than Groton was and it’s almost as pretty. It feels more remote than most other places we looked at (a positive) but is still close to everything. I think Georgetown is a perfect landing spot. I’m not as worried about the house, talked to a few people and apparently it’s not that weird to not have a master bathroom out there. And apparently it doesn’t affect the septic tank to add a bathroom, so adding one wouldn’t be as challenging as previously thought. But I also don’t think we’d need one, the kids’ bathroom is right outside the master bedroom. Had a lot of people confirm that the lack of AC isn’t a huge deal, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was 97 on a day we were there in May. Justin cannot be soothed on the AC front because climate change freaks him out. But he runs cold so he’ll probably be fine. We could always put a window unit in the master or install ceiling fans.

I am a little sad about chickens not being allowed. I wanted to make an incubator and hatch chicks with the kids in the spring. Sigh. We could get a pig or two. Or a tortoise. Perhaps goats? I don’t know. Their laws are written so weirdly. It says no grazing animals but per the internet a goat is a browsing animal, not a grazing one. I don’t even like goats, but I do like options. It says something about 2 swine allowed on less than 5 acres, but why on earth would they allow pigs and goats but not chickens??? Goats are destructive and pigs stink. Sigh.

I’m not ready for any new pets anyway. Honestly, it’s been so crazy since the twins were born. I’d like to focus this next year on getting everyone adjusted and thriving. I want to explore the area and make memories. Maybe in a few months we can rip out the carpet downstairs (living room, guest room/playroom, hallway) and replace with wood floors.

I also want to focus more on growing our own food. I want each kid to have their own garden bed, I want to start composting and researching the best method, and I would like to get a greenhouse. And thinking of the yard, I would like to build a tree house for the kids. We had a couple growing up and there is just something magical about them.

I really like the layout of the new house. Office and library will be in the finished basement. 4th bedroom is downstairs and will be the playroom/guest room. We will probably get another pull out sofa for the basement. Living room, kitchen and dining are also downstairs. Upstairs has two massive rooms and a third good sized one. And the fun blue bathroom. I am excited that our bedroom will be relatively close to the kids’ rooms. Here they are on the other side of the house and I hate how far they are.

So. Lots to look forward to. Now to survive the next few weeks...

That’s without even taking into account all the various near-automatically bankrupting endgames built into the American experience that most people try as much as possible not to think about: serious illness, an elderly relative forced into care, divorce, surprise legal problems, etc.

The fact that a year ago, anyone thought it made sense to tell the millions of people forced daily to navigate all this stupidity that they needed to focus on a labyrinthine political controversy in Ukraine — and to blast them for deficits of “sobriety and clarity” when they didn’t — told you everything you needed to know about the cluelessness of the people who run this country.

Then the pandemic happened.

No conspiracy theories are necessary to point out that all of the institutions Americans were in the process of rejecting just a year ago have since increased their power and influence. Be it opportunism or coincidence, the international emergency has written a dramatic heel turn into our history.

A sweeping Fed-based rescue program resulted in enormous booms in asset values, allowing America’s wealthiest to increase their net worth by nearly a trillion dollars since the start of the pandemic (in mid-summer, American billionaires were collectively earning $42 billion per week). The news in recent years often reads like accounts of America before the Sixties upheavals. That was also a time when long-held myths were rapidly losing force and people were beginning to question the palette of life choices celebrated in places like the Book of the Month Club and Life magazine. Men wondered why they were being sent around the world to kill poor people, only to come home to what Paul Goodman described as a “style of life dictated by Personnel… to work to pay installments on a useless refrigerator.”

Women had it worse, consigned to tend house and give themselves nightly as a reward for men who’d completed their “covenant of murder” in places like Vietnam. Americans are tired. They’ll forget soon and learn to walk right past mass media blather as if it were just amusingly terrible wallpaper, the way Soviets eventually did with Pravda and Izvestia. Student debt is crushing and college is an overpriced scam, but a reckoning of sorts is coming when people stop being ashamed of vocational school. Facebook and Instagram turbocharged the impact of fear-based “ring around the collar”-style marketing, but what happens when the pandemic recedes and going offline is possible again? Throwing off worries about likes and rediscovering real-life interaction feels destined to become a fashionable dissident statement, in the same way tuning in, turning on, and “dropping out” was an obvious response to the stultifying conformity of the fifties.

Day 6: Bruises

-------- The next day, Lori was tasked with helping Abilene around the house. Despite the size of the house and how many people trekked through it on any given day, very little of the work centered around cleaning. No, today, Lori was going to be testing her patience with cooking and food prep.

Lori knew how to cook. In theory. She knew how to use an oven (electric, gas, and the occasional wood-burner). She knew how to heat up something in a pan or a pot. She could even make a few things from scratch, assuming she had the ingredients handy, mostly eggs and pasta.

Food prepping for a ranch was a much different story.

There was no experimenting to see if the temperature dial was accurate. There was no obsessively checking the clock in lieu of a timer. There was no double-checking the instructions written on the box. 

Nope. Abby’s kitchen was run with fresh ingredients that were either being prepped for a later meal or being used in a current one. Abby had (semi-correctly) assumed Lori didn’t have much experience with cooking like this and just put her in charge of cutting vegetables or stirring sauces. Technically she was also a Taste Tester but that seemed more like an honorary title than a useful role.

She was chopping some apples under Abby’s not-so-subtle watch when the doorbell rang. “I’ll get it,” she said, leaving Lori to her chopping. A few moments later, she heard giggling and the sound of loud footsteps coming near the kitchn. “Oh, Cordi’ll be so happy to see you! It’s been ages… Oh, Lori! Hoyt, this is Lori. She’s one of Stella’s friends from school; her dad’s out of town so she’s staying with us for a while.”

Lori smiled softly and waved. “Hi….”

“Howdy.”

Abby snorted and gently pet Lori’s back. “I’m gonna go check on Bonham and Liam. Will you two be alright alone?”

“Yeah.”

“Sure.”

She turned back to her chopping. Hoyt came around the counter and grabbed a few pears to chop with her.

“So,” he started. “What happened?”

“Pardon?”

Hoyt chuckled. “You’re at home for the day on a school day, you’re working in the kitchen instead of being sick in bed, and I noticed that bandage. Something happened.”

Well. That was her caught. Lori shrugged, clearing away some apple chunks to make room for the next one. “I got into a fight. Some girl was being a bitch to Stella and August so I broke her nose.” There was no point in lying; it’d probably just come out later anyway.

“I can respect that,” Hoyt said. “Sounds like the kind of stuff I used to get into back in those days.”

Lori nodded, focusing on her chopping.

“You’re a good friend. Stella’s lucky she found you.”

She liked the way he said that, like she wasn’t some lucky charity case that got picked up out of pity. That didn’t make it any (potentially) less true, but still. Lori wondered if he had his own experience in a situation like that.

Lunch was miraculously uneventful. Hoyt didn't even ask her about why Liam was being careful around her, course he was likely too busy telling wild stories about whatever mess he’d gotten involved in while he was away. She was just glad not to be the topic of conversation at a meal for once.

She felt her phone vibrating in her pocket while she was putting away the last of the dishes. Checking to make sure no one was paying attention to her, Lori ducked into the next room and pulled out her phone. The text was from an unknown number, but she knew who it was. Only one person would text her out of the blue like this without an introduction.

She wanted to respond but the number was blocked. Of course it was. That was how he operated. She’d never get used to that. He’d get her the address later, probably through email, and they’d just go from there. Like they always did.

All Lori had to do now was figure out how to sneak out….

One day, Lori was going to suggest the Walkers invest in a security system that wasn’t accessible through a smart device. She’d have to figure out how to bring that up without mentioning she’d been able to bypass the alarms on Cordell’s phone with relative ease first though.

Regardless, she was out and headed for her destination. Why are these things always held in the most out of the way place possible? she thought as she entered the abandoned warehouse. She worked her way through the crowd, holding her duffle bag with her gear close to her chest, and headed for the locker room area. Once she was there, she got dressed and checked her first aid supply while she waited

“I was afraid you might back out,” came the all too familiar voice.

“Like I’d ever squelch on a deal with you,” Lori replied with a grin. She turned around and there he was, standing uncomfortably close as usual. “How’s the crowd looking?”

Darian grinned. “Very good turnout. I worked the room a bit, lot of people looking forward to seeing you in the cage. And, get this, they put you against a Were for your first fight!”

Of course they did. Hunter v. Monster fights drew a crowd as it was. Pitting a Hunter against their Thing? Pure gold. “Do you know anything about them?”

He shrugged. “Just that he’s a small thing with a big temper. It’s not his first rodeo but he’s not as well known as you. A lot of people are betting on you to win.”

“I take it you tossed your hat into that ring too?”

Darian smirked. “Always. Don’t worry, you’ll get your cut of that once you get to the top.”

Classic Darian, working all the possible angles. He was a smart guy, for a shapeshifter. She was about to respond when the fighting bell rang and her name was called over the loudspeakers.

“Showtime, babygirl. Make me proud!” Darian waved her off as she headed for the arena.

Lori took a deep breath and her mind cleared as she entered the cage. The crowd roared and she let it all wash over her. The sounds, the lights, the smells, everything. This was it. In here, she wasn’t a pitiable soul taken in by a friend. She wasn’t a reminder of her mother. She wasn’t a forgotten soul in the wasteland of The System. Here, she was Lori fucking Graves, one of the best fighters in the ring and the youngest hunter in the system. She was a badass, an icon, the love-to-hate-em fave. And she owned it.

The bell rang and the fight was on. Werewolves were tricky because of their claws and teeth, especially when she didn’t have a weapon of her own. But she’d been in worse situations before. A swift kick to the nuts took him to his knees and gave her the chance to land a few solid punches to his face before he got back up. A part of her couldn’t wait to see the bruises later. The larger part of her was regretting she couldn't run away faster when he lifted her above his head and threw her at the chain-link wall. That was going to smart later. But she could handle it.

Punch, kick, jab, punch, dodge, swerve, punchkickjabdodgepunchkickswerve and on it and on it went. Once she got into a rhythm, she could work off muscle memory and fall into a state of near zen. This is why she loved the fights. This is why she’d never walk away. This is why the payout was always worth it. This is why working around the bruises and scrapes would always be worth it, no matter who she was with.

It felt glorious. 

Her opponent was tiring out and she took advantage of that to elbow him in the face and knock him to the ground with a kick to the shin. She pinned him down and spit in his face while the ref counted her. 

She won.

She was bloody and bruising and she was definitely sleeping in tomorrow. 

But she won.

“Excellent work, darling.” Darian smiled proudly and gently clapped her on the shoulder as she stepped out the ring. “Payout for tonight is $915. Well, minus my cut, of course….” He handed Lori the cash and she stuffed it in her bag.

“Thanks. When’s the next one?”

“They’re gonna finish out the first round over the next couple days. I’ll text you the morning of so you have time to figure out your excuses.”

Lori shouldered her duffle bag and made her way to the back exit. “Alright. I’ll see you then.” 

It was a long walk back home, but the bills she counted later were more than worth it. She just had to figure out how she was going to hide the evidence from the rest of the house…..

OCT Week 1: Director’s Cut

Day 1 From Portland, we took four buses to the beginning of the trail in Fort Stevens State Park, with eventful layovers in the city of Astoria (fish and chips + bloody mary and beer on the waterfront + soft serve custard 🤤) and the legendary PNW superstore, Fred Meyer. Set up camp in the Fort Stevens hiker-biker area and walked north along the beach in search of the official OCT start marker (does it exist? We still don’t know!). A five mile hike turned into a ten mile hike and we returned to camp at 10:30 pm after trespassing in a jetty construction site and almost getting gored by an elk. Same deal as bears and mountain lions: walk away backwards, talk loudly, make yourself big, don’t run.

Day 2 Woke up and met our camp neighbor, a European biker girl who had a lazy morning smoking cigs, drinking pourover coffee, reading, and sitting in the sun. Sexy! When I get over my fear of being hit by a car and start bikepacking that’s how it’s gonna be.

Hiked 7 miles south to Sunset Beach, where we caught a bus to the town of Seaside. Zoey and I enjoy a hostel experience from time to time so she booked us two nights at the Seaside International Hostel and it was…pretty weird! All I will say for now is that it inspired a new running list, “Most Employees Stoned Most of the Time” Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Day 3 Spent the day hanging at the beach in Seaside and buying a few things we needed. This town is weird as fuck, it feels like the setting of a Goosebumps book: too many candy stores, an old-timey indoor arcade and amusement park, a suspicious fog that darkens the promenade in the afternoon… Every store and restaurant is staffed by teens who harass each other in a way that feels made for TV. At the Elephant Ears stand (it’s like a funnel cake I guess?) this kid who couldn’t have been older than 16 ran a very tight ship and was overheard telling his subordinations that just because he was the manager didn’t mean he had to work more days than anyone else. Now that’s some corporate culture, some top down management! Right on. This kid will be president in 2040.

Steve and I felt the same way about the hostel.

Day 4 A weird middle aged dude named Tony (sorry @MilviaTony) tried to woo Zoey last night at the hostel campfire, so we had to peace out quick in the morning. He’s also hiking the OCT (allegedly) so we’re still on guard in case we encounter him again. As we were getting ready to leave Zoey realized she’d lost her key and I had the idea that it might have fallen behind the baseboard, which was installed extremely shoddily and wasn’t fully attached to the wall. When I looked in the crack I spotted a $20 bill!! Enough to pay the hostel lost key fee AND buy us both bagels. I grabbed some marshmallow sticks from the kitchen and we spent at least ten minutes digging it out. Here’s what we got:

We finally left the hostel and got some bagels and I had my first Red Bull “infusion” with cherry, vanilla, and lime “flavorings”. I wanted to be energized in case I had to fight new Tony later on the trail. Goodbye Seaside! We hiked up Tillamook Head to a magic backpackers camp which had three cabins (two bunk beds in each) with a fire pit in the middle, and many more tent spots in the surrounding woods. We had it all to ourselves! I loveeee places like this and I always think about how cool it would be to take over the spot for a night and throw a big + stupidly extravagant party and have all my friends backpack in speakers and feast food and a million bottles of wine, etc… For me and Zoey’s bdays, someday.

Only problem with this camp: no water! The map screwed us. We basically had nothin left when we arrived so we just ate snacks for dinner. Fun to sleep in the cabins (for me) but Zoey had to get up in the middle of the night and fight off some rodents who were eating her books on the top bunk.

Day 5 Hiked 5.5 miles down Tillamook Head to Ecola Point (water!!!) and then into Cannon Beach, which was actually cute and more the vibe we were expecting in Seaside. We had iced coconut lattes and a green smoothie (me) and veggie sandwich (Z) for lunch. Wow so healthy. Took the bus to Manzanita and bought snacks, then walked another 2.5 miles down the beach to the hiker-biker camp at Nehalam Bay State Park.

Day 6 Walked a few miles down the beach and got ferried across the Nehalam River by a Jetty Fishery employee. This place is cool - you can pay to spend the day crabbing off their dock or you can be lazy and just buy the crab, oysters, and clams that they already caught that day. They cook it for you and provide all the accoutrements (lemon, butter, hot sauce, etc.), and then you can chow on the patio with a cold beer. The dock store was small but mighty and had all the essentials including hot cheetos and cucumber lime Gatorade, which we saw a group of children-workers munching on during their 15 minute break. My kinda gals! Are there labor laws in this state?? Please comment below… The store also sells mangonada paletas, which I didn’t even know existed!!! What a spot. If you do the OCT save a few hours to get drunk and fishy here.

We walked 7 miles or so down the beach, stopping in Rockaway Beach for lunch at an Indian food cart on the side of the 101. This place has Guy Fieri’s name written all over it. We ordered giant naan wraps/burritos, mine with lamb curry and rice and Z’s with veggies and rice. I upgraded my naan to garlic, duh, and we used the tamarind and mint chutney as salsa. As Guy would say: it was money!

We walked some more and camped at the Bar View Jetty hiker-biker camp, right behind the dunes, and had our first campfire. For once in our shared existence I put my pack under the vestibule and Zoey left hers out, and we woke up to pouring rain and thunder and lightning at 4 am. Our shoes got wet but we rescued everything in time 👍🏻

Day 7 Lots of road walking today, which is a notorious issue with the OCT…some waterways are impassable with no ferry options and in some areas the road shoulder is the official trail… From camp, we walked along the railroad tracks to Garibaldi where we caught the bus to the Tillamook Cheese Factory. No coat check (ya not exactly MOMA…) so we did the self-guided tour and ate cheese samples with our bags on, then bought fried cheese curds and ice cream for lunch. Btw chocolate peanut butter is the all-time best Tillamook ice cream flavor!! It has like sheets of sweetened peanut butter in it, make sure you eat all that before anybody you live with gets to it.

Tangent: @Tillamook, as a PNW-based ice creamery, why do you have so many berry flavors that are all VANILLA BASED?? Give me a straight raspberry or blackberry ice cream, puhlease! My favorite PNW ice cream place of all time, Mora, has like five pure berry flavors, now that’s the real shit. Go there and get a brownie hot fudge sundae with every berry ice cream they have and thank me later.

After the dairy fest we walked to Fred Meyer for a quick resupply, then got on another bus to downtown Tillamook to catch another bus to Netarts. The bus system here is so great! You can get off wherever you want and the drivers are sooo nice - we almost missed our Netarts bus cuz the first one was running late and multiple transit employees got involved and made damn sure we caught that bus. Transit drama is the best. Where’s the Grey’s Anatomy for transit workers, NUMTOTs would go fucking nuts for that.

There’s no official way to cross Netarts Bay, so we were supposed to flag down a fisherman at the boat launch and ask for a ride. Only one boat went out in the time we were standing around, we were both tired, and I had a fresh zit/didn’t feel like turning the charm on, so we decided to walk the highway around the Bay instead. Another hiker-biker camp, another campfire night, and quesadillas on the firepit grill 🤙🏻
