Fandom hierarchies are so fucking stupid. Can't believe whole ass adults are trying to measure dicks with each other over getting autistic with media in ways that under no circumstance would you ever feel comfortable sharing with irl people. Getting competitive over who has the best fluff furry ship or trying to establish yourself in a cliche as if it's highschool hoping you make it in the table with the "popular" kids , when every single one of us here most likely got bullied in school .
Anyway, other people aren't better than you nor are you better than them for having more followers/more interactions. The moment we kill the subconscious expectation of a certain fic or certain art being the holy grail of fan creation , the better it is for everyone.
#btw im not vagueposting about anyone specific here#i had a conversation with a friend about fandom hierarchies about an entirely different fandom#and its so sad to see high school hierarchies seem to build themselves in every corner of the internet#i really think the modern social media landscape makes this behavior way more susceptible

I have a big google doc thing where I keep track of media and stuff (putting everything in loosely ranked categories), which is mostly just for my own reference so I know what tv shows I've already seen before, etc. and I never really look back through it, typically just a quick "okay, watched two movie in the past 8 months, need to quickly slap them somewhere in the lists. okay. done. save document. exit". But today I was actually reading through some of the old notes and there are like... MULTIPLE places where my comment is basically "It would have been good if it were about elves" or "I wish there was a fantasy show made in this same style" or "It's well made, but I just keep thinking about how I would like it more if everyone was an elf or was in old 1700s costumes" or etc like...... lol.... Most biased media ranking system on earth blatantly made by someone with an extremely hyperspecific range of narrow interests. It'd be like if a food reviewer only had 5 foods they actually liked, so they'd just go to a pizza place and be like "eh, the pizza was okay, but I just think it would be better if it was cereal instead. :/ ...2 out of 10"
#Which.. I mean... I am allowed to be biased because literally it's just for my own personal reference (or occasionall#y to send to friends or something if we're discussing the topic) so like.. nowhere am I saying 'I am the god of perfect taste and these#rankings are objectively the absolute truth and everyone should have my same opinion' or anything#BUT still.. it's funny to me sometimes#'Succession would be 100x better if it had the same cast/character quirks and shaky camera style and#acting choices/weird dialogue and general concept etc. EXCEPT it takes place within an elven noble family or something#managing the family business and everyone is in fantasy costumes now'' like.....okay...... but it's NOT that way..soo... thats not the show#''I like the acting style/general tone of Fleabag but i don't care for any of the characters or any of the subject matter and I wish it was#set in the 1800s and had vampires and was about magic instead'' okay..... again... you are making up an entirely new show in that case lol#OR my other beloved typical complaint ''The concept is good but theres too much plot and action and not enough people just sitting#around doing nothing and exposition dumping world and character lore'' ''this needs more goofy sideplots and filler episodes''#''this Drama was too dramatic I think it should be more lighthearted & people need to sit around doing nothing just being weird more often'#''the Action Movie was ok except for the action scenes - which I skipped through all of- but I liked the costumes and worldbuilding'' etc.#ERM sorry your plot has too much plot. also elves have to be included somehow. bye#BUT SERIOUSLY!!!!!! I literally genuinely believe that any show I like (or even dislike) could ALWAYS be improved greatly by#putting people in fantasy or historical costume/setting/etc... why the FUNK would I want to see bland jeans and cars and cell phones#when I could see elaborate velvet cloaks and fantastical landscapes and interior design and innovative takes on historical or#magical technology or etc. etc. etc. I LIVE in the modern day. I see it all the time!!! BORING! stinky!! boo!!!#ANYWAY... another social divide for me.. People love to bond by discussing media. which is hard when I'm like#'I literally will not watch something at all unless it fits into one of these 10 extremely specific categories which are all i care about i#the entire world''.. I say this and yet I still dislike most fantasy or historical things I've watched lol. ok TWO main criteria then!!#it must 1. be in a different world or time period. 2. be goofy silly. Nothing ever has BOTH. It's always overly serious boring drama action#fantasy/history stuff OR it's comedic lighthearted but with modern day characters... WHY.. anguish and woe and so on..#ANYWAY jhjnk... at least I can make that divide. Some people seem to project their own personal preferences and get really emotionally#defensive if you say you didn't like something - as if the fact that they DO like it is some Objective Truth or something rather than just#opinion/preference based. I can still easily say ''this is well made/well written/acted/good in a technical sense/has a lot of#points of appeal that most people would be drawn to/etc'' and admit that it's a GOOD show probably. I just PERSONALLY think its#bad because my tastes are very narrow. Some things ARE actually made badly but. things are not bad INHERENTLY just bc they dont suit ME lol#Better to recognize/accept whats odd about you and be peacefully aware of it than just being mad at everyone all the time for not fully#agreeing with you even when you're the one with the Weird opinion in that case lol.. I am right though :3 but.. lol... still. i get it

tagged in this thing by @gniew777! thanks!
last song: abigail by chatham rabbits - I'm still hunting down songs to compile a playlist that specifically evokes oak savanna summertimes* and every time I find a song that I think will be perfect it turns out to be textually about kentucky or something. it's still a good song though.
currently watching: finished castlevania recently and haven't decided where I'd like to go next. maybe hilda??
currently reading: still working through my ridiculous quest to download all of mainseries animorphs into my head at painful speeds (we are partway into book 35 at the moment) and also idly picking at rosemary sutcliff's 'the sword and the circle' since it's nicely pocket-sized and thus portable.
current obsession: as previously stated, you may have noticed my animorphs problem. and also the flintlock fortress project is still chewing at the inner walls of my skull like unto a squirrel trapped in my braincase. so there's that.
and I shall tag... @dxppercxdxver, @natdrinkstea, @sailorpants, @graveyardrabbit, @cytocutie, @what-even-is-sleep, @fluentisonus, @cedarboots, if you'd like to share?
#one of those tag things#*california musical tradition is fascinating to me because if there is a genre or style that focuses on this I Do Not Know of it at all.#there are most certainly Location-Based Musical Traditions here but I find that the ones that are most codified in my head are quite urban#whether that's older music that's got a specifically san francisco sense of place or more modern stuff in other very specific spots#and what more folk-adjacent stuff there is does not exactly feel grounded in the landscape in the way that I'm looking for#anyway [interlude of harmonica squawks in the redwood grove] I have got to write more strongly set California Fictions as well#every so often my excitement about a really specific sort of landscape comes bursting out of my chest like an alien :/#and I am very particular about what media is able to properly put the alien back in and reinstall my ribs over it for another few months#...this metaphor may have gotten out of hand.

Viral Landscape by Helen Chadwick
Helen Chadwick from the Viral Landscapes,1989 I don’t remember when I first saw Helen Chadwick’s Viral Landscapes – I suspect I went to the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford and saw them there in 1989 – but I do know that I have never forgotten them. I think there were only five of these extraordinary pictures in the series, although I surprise myself now by finding what seem to be variants…

What did the creators of Red Dwarf do that was bad?
not really thinking of a specific incident at all as much as the general vibe - while theres a lot of queercoded content in the show its generally intended as jokes/mocking, and the cast have said some shitty stuff about it in the past (though theres no way to know if they would stand by any of that nowadays - you have to take everything im saying here with a grain of 'this show started in the 80s')
the show has definitely eased off substantially on the jokes about queerness, and the trans joke in tpl was fucking hilarious honestly, but the intention back in the early seasons was definitely to mock. when i made that post i was thinking in particular about the stuff kaylin mentioned in her tags here - djj using the t slur to describe low rimmer, and craig charles complaining about tongue tied being gay. usually i just dont think about that stuff because the show as it is is so easy to read through a queer lens unironically, but its definitely a bummer to actually think about. the best remedy for that ultimately is the newer seasons, its obvious that the cast and writers have evolved their views and arent leaning into that stuff in the same way but its still hurtful to know that content that was integral to my growth as a queer youth was designed to mock and hurt me.
#Anonymous#red dwarf#like the original seasons were made in SUUUUUCH a different cultural landscape you really cant judge them by modern standards#but its still a bummer#and while i dont really know about the main cast/crew these days there are some shitbags in the wider bunch#the actress who played arlene is a giant terf#which is tragic bc otherwise i would be clamouring for the return of deb & arlene#anyway red dwarf is really a case of straight people making media so homophobic it accidentally whips back around to being gay#but im gay and its mine now and they cant stop me >:3#doug naylor come here i just wanna talk

Photography Capturing Time
Photography has always felt like a little slice of magic to me. I first encountered it more seriously when I studied media in college, and I was instantly hooked. There’s something so powerful about freezing a moment in time, capturing it in a frame, and preserving it forever.
The act of taking a photograph felt like an art form all its own whether it was the vibrant colours of a sunset over the horizon or the minute details in the veins of a leaf under the lens of macro photography.
While I was in college, I immersed myself in different techniques and styles. But my heart was often drawn to landscapes and macro shots. The vastness of a wide open sky or the intricate beauty in something as small as a dewdrop on a blade of grass it’s these details that speak to the essence of photography. It’s about taking something fleeting and making it permanent, giving it a story and a life beyond the present moment.
But here’s where my love for photography faces a bit of a dilemma in modern times: the advancement of phone cameras. Don’t get me wrong there’s something to admire about the capabilities of the new iPhone 16 Pro, for instance. Its ability to capture professional-grade photos with just the tap of a button is impressive, but I can’t help but feel like it takes some of the work, and even the soul, out of photography. In the past, you had to think more deeply about the process of focusing the lens just right, balancing light and shadow, and choosing the right angle to capture the perfect shot.
With modern smartphones, much of that thought process is automated. Sure, the convenience is there, but the art of photography seems to get lost in the race for the most advanced technology. It’s not just about snapping a picture but being part of the scene, composing it with intent and care.
At the end of the day, photography is about more than the gear you use. It’s the feeling you get when you frame that perfect shot the sense that you’ve captured a moment that might otherwise be lost to time. And no matter how advanced technology gets, that magical feeling will never go away.
One more thing. I adore black-and-white photography too.
