SR Riddle Rosehearts - Nightmare Suit Vignette
"Absolutely against the rules!"
Tumblr media
[Halloween Town – Alleyway]
Riddle: We lost so much time because of that unexpected mishap. We should finish up the Halloween preparations as quickly as possible.
Jamil: Right. We should begin by checking out how the rest of the town is doing.
Riddle: I agree. While Halloween Town was mired in all that confusion, some other issues may have cropped up.
Tumblr media
[Halloween Town – Town Hall]
Riddle: Jamil, take a look at that. The candy that we prepared ahead of time seems to have decreased in number since we last looked…
Jamil: You're right. There should have been overflowing mounds of candy in three baskets. But now, I only see one.
Riddle: Someone may have unintentionally moved it, or some ill-advised malcontent may have stolen it…
Jamil: ――Hm? I feel like I just saw something move out of the corner of my eye…
Riddle: THERE! YOU WON'T ESCAPE ME!!
[chair slams against door]
???: Waah! What's with this chair!?
???: Why'd it just appear in front of us out of nowhere?
Jamil: I see, you used your magic to move the chair to block the exit. Good thinking.
Shock: We can't leave 'cause this chair's in the way!
Shock: It's all 'cause you two were so slow in carrying the candy. You blockheads!
Barrel: I'm not the blockhead, he is.
Lock: She's talking about you!
Riddle: Oh, it's you guys… The troublemaker trio.
Lock/Shock/Barrel: URK!!!
Jamil: There's candy spilling out from the bag they're dragging. They're for sure our culprits.
Riddle: Good thing we captured them before they made off with the candy. There's no place for you three to run now.
Shock: You're so mean, cutting us off from the exit when we're trying to leave!
Riddle: Mean? You seem to be mistaking me for yourselves.
Riddle: No single person can claim all the candy for themselves. It is an unforgivable act to steal it.
Riddle: And just after causing all that chaos in town… Have the three of you not reflected on your actions at all?
Lock: C'mon, we ran around so much earlier that we're so hungry, though.
Shock: Plus, this is the first time we've seen candy like the ones you guys made, and it look suuuper yummy.
Barrel: There's no way we can wait until Halloween to eat 'em.
Lock/Shock/Barrel: [chomp, chomp] … See, it's sooo good.
Riddle: Wha… How dare you add to your crimes by eating the candy mid-testimony! Absolutely barbaric!
Jamil: They keep doing whatever they want, as if they're not to blame for any of the problems we faced in town earlier… Honestly, I can't help but be a little impressed.
Riddle: If we just leave them be, they may cause another problem sooner or later, so if I'd rather it be off with their heads…
Lock: Huh? Off with whose head?
Barrel: Probably Jack's. 'Cause he can take off his head, can't he?
Shock: Sounds awesome! I thought this guy was just a nagging bore, but he can say some fun stuff, too!
Lock/Shock/Barrel: Let's go! Let's go right now! Let's go take off Jack's head!
Riddle: Silence!! You three misunderstand me. When I say "off with their head," I am not speaking literally.
Lock: Eh, really?
Shock: Boooring, I thought it was gonna be something fun.
Riddle: Sigh… I feel a headache coming along just being around you three.
Jamil: Not only do they not show any signs of remorse, they immediately leap at the chance to start something new… They are completely out of our control.
Riddle: However, if we were to leave these children to their own devices, they may interfere with the Halloween preparations again.
Riddle: If that's the case… Jamil, the two of us should keep an eye on these three.
Riddle: And as the Housewarden of Heartslabyul, I shall ingrain into the children proper discipline!
Jamil: It's fine and dandy that you're raring to go, but you didn't need to drag me into this without asking…
Riddle: Did you say something just now, Jamil?
Jamil: …No, nothing at all.
Riddle: Well, then… Ahem! See here, you three. Listen to me well.
Riddle: From here on out, you will not run around as you please, but will accompany us. Understand?
Lock: Ehhhh! Why'd we have to be with you guys?
Riddle: That is because you all keep breaking the rules.
Riddle: In essence, this is the result of all your mischief. …Now, how do you respond?
Shock: I don't really get it, but whatever! We were bored, anyway, so we can stick with you for a tiiiny bit.
Riddle: Good! Then first, return all the candy you stole back onto the table. As soon as that's done, we'll go survey how the rest of the town is doing.
Tumblr media
[Halloween Town – Gate]
Riddle: The first stop is the gate to confirm the state of their decorations… And already it seems that we've found the bats they have decorating it with are crooked.
Riddle: As of this moment, they are at about 160° from the ground. However, they should be kept at 180° parallel to the ground.
Jamil: You really have an eye for the smallest detail. I don't know if I should say it's too much, or what…
Riddle: I will not permit any carelessness that could ruin the perfect Halloween. Besides, adjusting the angle is easily fixed with a quick spell…
Lock: Huh? You want to fix the crooked decorations on the gate?
Shock: Then we can fix it for you… With this ball!
Shock: Hyah!
[throws ball]
Riddle: Ack!? That almost hit me! Why would you ever think to fix something like that by hitting it with a ball!?
Barrel: 'Cause we can't reach the decorations ourselves.
Jamil: Then, you should use a stool or a ladder…
Lock: We thought it'd be faster if we used a ball.
Riddle: Hmm… It seems it will be more difficult than I thought to teach these kids proper discipline.
Riddle: Listen up, you three. You shouldn't throw a ball towards where other people are.
Lock/Shock/Barrel: WHY???
Riddle: Because if it hits someone, it could injure them. It's dangerous.
Shock: But balls are for throwing, though?
Riddle: ...I see, so that's the hang up. If that's the case, we may need to begin with re-learning the definition of a ball.
Riddle: I shall start your lesson with what a ball is, and it's origins. There are many theories as to where it was originated, but at first…
Jamil: YOU'RE STARTING THE LESSON FROM THERE!?
Tumblr media
Riddle: …And that is why you should not throw balls. Did you understand all that?
Lock/Shock/Barrel: Yup, totally!
Jamil: Liars, none of you were listening at all!
Riddle: Whether they understood the lesson or not will be apparent with how they conduct themselves from now on.
Riddle: We've finished with confirming the decoration progress. Next, we'll look in on the music…
[scamper, scamper]
Jamil: Big problem, Riddle! Those three are already gone!
Riddle: What!? We only took our eyes off of them for a second… We need to hurry and find them!
Shock: MOVE OUTTA THE WAY! YOU'RE STANDIN' IN THE WAY!!
Jamil: Hm? I hear their voices from behind… WAAH!!
[thud]
Riddle: A bathtub with legs just crashed into Jamil!? Are you alright, Jamil? Any injuries?
Jamil: …I'm fine, it's nothing.
Lock: Seeee, this all happened 'cause you're just standing there all spaced out.
Barrel: Lame-o~
Jamil: Krgh! It's obviously their fault, but they have the nerve to speak like that.
Riddle: What do you three think you're doing, now!?
Shock: What do you mean, what we're thinkin'? We were tired of walking, so we brought something to make it easier to move around.
Lock/Barrel: Yeah, it's our favorite ride!
Riddle: That may be so, but you should take care not to bump into anyone.
Shock: That's why we shouted to move out the way.
Lock: Or are you sayin' Jamil owns this road?
Barrel: You sayin' we're not allowed to use this road or somethin'?
Riddle: Well, no…
Lock/Shock/Barrel: THEN EVERYTHING'S FINE!!
Riddle: EVERYTHING IS NOT FINE!!!
Jamil: Those three don't feel any remorse at all, huh… They're so blatant that it's actually refreshing to deal with.
Riddle: Similar to the ball incident earlier, any actions that may bring harm to anyone else is absolutely against the rules!
Riddle: Furthermore, a bathtub is not something to ride in and use as a mode of transportation.
Shock: Eh, but a bathtub is totally something to ride in.
Lock/Barrel: Yeah, it's our ride!
Riddle: …What? How exactly are bathtubs utilized in this town?
Shock: So, you see, basically…
Tumblr media
Riddle: Mhm… Mhm… I see.
Riddle: Which all goes to say that this town approves of bathtubs as transportation?
Shock: Right-o, Riddle. If it wasn't, we totally wouldn't ride in it.
Riddle: I see… My apologies, I was in the wrong on my understanding of bathtubs here. I take it back, you may ride it!!
Jamil: THEY CAN!?!?
Lock/Shock/Barrel: YAY!!!
Lock: Seee, you totally get it.
Riddle: However, you are to ride it with care so as to not injure others. And you are to apologize to Jamil.
Lock/Shock/Barrel: 'Kaaaay. Soooorry, Jamil.
Riddle: Good apology, you three.
Lock: Right, right? We did good!
Jamil: He's just letting them off with that half-done apology…? They don't look like they're sorry at all!!
Shock: Riddle! I totally thought you were just gonna yap at us non-stop, but you're actually a good guy who totally gets us.
Shock: We like you! Join our crew and play with us!
Barrel: Here, we'll even let you in our bathtub, our treat.
Riddle: Eh? No, I'll pass on―
Shock: Let's go, you two! Push Riddle into the bathtub!
Lock/Shock/Barrel: HEAAAAAVE… HO!!!
Riddle: Waaah!!!
Tumblr media
Lock/Shock/Barrel: Nyahahahehehe! He's in, he's in! Riddle's riding in the bathtub!
Jamil: Hey, Riddle! You alright!?
Riddle: …Yes, although that shocked me slightly, I am fine.
Riddle: Actually, this bathtub isn't that uncomfortable, either.
Shock: Well, yeah, this bathtub's our pride and joy!
Riddle: I see… From my brief time with you three, I see that you have your own rules you abide by.
Riddle: I suppose I was a little too strict on you. For me to teach you all discipline, I would first need to know more about this town.

SMM: I just, where I feel sympathy for Doohan is just in the fact that when a driver finds themselves in a, you need to prove yourself or you'll lose your seat scenario, that doesn't normally come in the very first races of your career, and it doesn't normally come two months before you've even got in the car for preseason testing. Every single question Doohan gets asked now, it's going to have an undertone of, you might lose your drive. Every session that he does is going to be done with the backdrop of, you could lose your drive. Every time he makes a mistake in a session or something goes wrong for him, there'll be a TV camera cut to Franco Colapinto standing in the Alpine garage. That is how it's going to be for him now. I just, just to say that word again, because sympathy is kind of very rare that we would dish it out in such circumstances. I think the sympathy lies in the fact that I quite like Doohan, I like the way he goes about things. He's trying to be as professional as he can, and he's very determined. He's clearly a decent driver, and I say decent in F1 context, he's obviously a very good driver in pretty much any other context. Is he a superstar? I don't think so, but I do think he deserves a real chance to show how he can perform in F1. I am just a little bit worried he won't necessarily get that in these first few races. The counterpoint is if he steps in and does do a really good job, that I think that will speak volumes for his ability and his capacity to handle pressure, because I can't imagine a worse kind of setup to be making your [debut]. The only recent equivalent I can think of really, is it kind of felt a little bit like Nick De Vries was on a road to nowhere within the Red Bull organization, after the weird way that he came into Formula One. But even that was such a bonus for him, it almost didn't matter. Whereas for Doohan this is everything. He's worked super hard from this, and he's having his legs chopped out from underneath him before he's even started. ES: Yeah, it's certainly not ideal. I don't think it's a great situation to bid him in, and I do think it's worth trying to make sure your drivers are in the best possible environment to thrive, but at the same time, the point I'm sort of making is that it's within his power to make sure that the worst doesn't happen to him. I don't think we should underestimate Jack Doohan. He's a very quick driver. Without that chassis-crack problem, it's possible he could have won F2 a couple of years ago, and I think then people would view him a little bit differently.
Scott Mitchell-Malm and Edd Straw discussing Jack Doohan's situation within the Alpine organisation and his future in F1 within the context of Franco Colapinto being signed to the team as test and reserve driver on The Race podcast

Extremely long rant on 001 & 457:
3.3k words
Intro
Yesterday I finished season 2 of Squid Game. I have so much to say about In-ho’s and Gi-hun’s dynamics and writing.
Keep in mind this is my interpretation of these characters and their dynamics. I’m just yapping because I have a lot to say. Maybe this takes on a much more optimistic view than is actually the case, but I fear it makes sense to me.
I have seen two takes about 457 around pretty often:
“They’re in love.” or:
“In-ho feeds off of Gi-hun’s pain because he’s just an evil guy.”
These can both be true in a way, but when no one talks about the little details of the character writing and the relationship between these two guys, it feels like the incredible potential and writing that this duo has is being overlooked.
Note, I will be referring to this Youtube video throughout this post:
youtube
Now let’s start with what we know already. It’s pretty evident that In-ho is not totally emotionless like many people are trying to imply or interpret him as.
Here’s why.
Hwang In-Ho and The Traitor Archetype
There are two ways in which a character like 001 can be portrayed.
TYPE 1 : The undercover ‘friend’ who is working against the main character can be shown to the audience as the ordinary cast member, and then it will be a plot twist when the protagonist learns with the audience the truth of this character. Usually the demeanor of this undercover ‘ally’ is not shown too obviously because it might take away from the impact of the plot twist later.
TYPE 2 : or You can go down the route that Squid Game did go. We knew Frontman’s face, so it was no use trying to convince us he was a good guy. His personality was not exaggerated like some Type 1 characters can be. Characters like this are not particularly hidden from the audience’s suspicion/accusation because we already know. And in these cases, the writers do not often need to give these characters disguise-personalities. In Squid Game, we as an audience know where to look for the cracks in In-ho’s character, where the ways in which his real identity shows through.
There was that time he killed someone in front of Jung-bae. It would have been out of nowhere for a story where they hadn’t shown his identity before, but we knew exactly what was going on. So let’s look at the instances before it was shown directly to other characters.
Here are the instances where we know for sure that his real self is slipping through.
In-ho more than once asks people questions and engages with them in a manner that might not come across as too strange to them. But to the audience, those who know he is an outsider, and thus know to pay attention to the possible intent behind his every word, it stands out.
In-ho engages with the people who are truly inside the game as specimens to observe. That’s partly why he’s there, after all. For example, take the instance during the Mingle game where he questioned Geum-ja about her son’s character. He doesn’t need to hide his sort of objective, detached curiosity (which extends slightly outside Gi-hun), about these people and how they work, because no one is keeping an eye out for it.
Because of this, I believe he did not need to make any extra efforts to mask his natural personality, beyond the bare necessary minimum.
In-ho’s Humor
Another reason I think that him not faking his personality a good amount of the time is his humor. The jokes and the ideas for jokes that one comes up is very telling of their inner processes, their ability to make connections between things and then an insight as to what they themselves think others around them will find funny.
First the joke he made about Gi-hun’s last name, and then about Jun-hee’s child as a sixth member in the Mingle game, both display a sort of consistent sense of dad joke type of humor. It is hard to fake humor that you are not well-versed in, and even harder if you put yourself in an unfamiliar environment with little preparation, purely to observe people.
Considering the fact that In-ho is evidently still in the process of observing these people up close as people rather than players, it would have been difficult to first think of a joke that they would enjoy and then deliver it successfully.
He could have gone without. He characterized himself in the others’ eyes well enough to go without making these jokes. It’s not like he was putting on any false performance for us, the audience (as noted above), and he was only omitting certain information from the other characters. There should be nothing ulterior that motivates him to go further and come up with a new/different sense of humor.
This leads me (personally) to read these interactions as genuine. These were jokes he thought of and spoke aloud, not to fool Gi-hun and the others, but because they naturally came to his mind and he decided to share them.
And villain-type character as he is now, he is still a person.
In-ho and his Family
There are other moments we saw from him that were genuine.
There was the information we got from his mother and Jun-ho, how he gave his brother his kidney and how his wife died.
Then In-ho lost his composure when Thanos told him to lecture his own kid. This was not an act—It would have been entirely unnecessary if he wanted everyone to believe he was a nice guy capable of little harm. This was genuine from him, he lost control and it was reasonable and it was real.
So when he told Gi-hun about his wife and unborn child that he is supposedly now in the games for, the things we have seen so far also point to that scene being a genuine interaction from him. His expressions did not hide it either.
And if all of that is not enough, he did not kill his brother. He sent Captain Park to find Jun-ho. In-ho put his brother, who knew exactly who Frontman is now, who now has something to work with, over his whole operation—It wouldn’t be too large a reach to say this.
Hwang In-ho is Not Without Emotion
Now we’ve subverted the whole idea of In-ho being some emotionless monster that some people online want to say he is. He may lack morals but he does not lack personality/emotion.
I didn’t even get into the way he cheered in the 5-minigame rounds or the way the first thing he did when he found Gi-hun in the Games was knowingly shit-talk him to his face, but I already have this much. This is all my evidence for In-ho being very and incredibly human, my case for him having a defined personality, fake player aside.
This is almost all sourced from lines in the show, rather than just visual acting which can be interpreted multiple ways. Thus every bit of the things I talked about is likely intentional.
Justice for my queen In-ho he is a great character and I enjoy him and his writing a LOT.
457 Introduction
I like to call 457 toxic yaoi as much as the next guy, but it’s so more than just the visible tension/chemistry between them. It’s more than enmity, it’s more than friendship and it’s more than romance too. Why stick labels on it when it’s so much more complicated?
Although on that note, before I get into the deeper stuff I just want to point out that all this staring at each other’s lips and whatnot was probably not something the actors decided to throw in on their own, considering the ‘I don’t understand it but it’s not unpleasant’ comment about the ship from Lee Byung-hun. So was it scripted for them to be doing allat? Lord knows, we’ll find out in June (fitting).
I am not even getting into how In-ho spoke to Gi-hun without his mask on and let him hear his real voice when Gi-hun won his first set of Games. There is something that has the potential to be very intimate about that.
I am not even getting into the little storytelling bit of how Gi-hun’s stubbornness reminds In-ho of his dead wife, and then how Gi-hun that exact determination at the end.
Pre-Games 2024
Let’s start with the limo dialogues, when In-ho told Gi-hun he wished he would’ve led a happy life.
He has no reason to wish Gi-hun ill, especially after Gi-hun won the games and left. In-ho likely saw himself in Gi-hun even back when Gi-hun won, and genuinely did wish him the happy life that In-ho himself did not end up having.
And how many people like Gi-hun has In-ho seen? Ever?
What kind of person does Gi-hun have to be, how notable in In-ho’s eyes does he have to be, for the person that administrates the Games to show himself to the person who wants to end them?
Gi-hun survived the Games without directly causing anyone’s death. In this place that tries to bring out the worst in anyone, even when Gi-hun fucked up in the marble game, he regretted it and turned back. This already sets him apart from anyone else, and especially sets him apart from In-ho, who took the darker road and climbed up the system.
You could say, ‘But other people have regretted their actions in the Games.’ But how many people get 45.6 billion won over 455 people’s deaths, and then come back, not for money, but to prevent further death? And how many people come back and become the Front Man?
Gi-hun went back with all that money to find his mom dead, presumably in a similar way to how In-ho went back with all the money he won but his wife died anyway.
There is a system that crushes people under it, In-ho realizes somewhere down the line, and then there is a way to remove those people. Gi-hun sees it another way: change the system.
Friends
Both of these people came into the Games for the sake of their loved ones. One came out of the process corrupt, and one returned determined to root out the corruption.
This year, aside from In-ho, there are 454 other people in this year’s Games that he does not know or necessarily care about. And then there is Gi-hun.
He knows Gi-hun. In-ho is a previous winner, just like Gi-hun, he is returning to the game for Gi-hun just as Gi-hun returned for In-ho. In-ho sees Gi-hun as more worthy of his time than anyone else. And all of this comes dangerously close to seeing Gi-hun as an equal, someone he has attached his narrative to, more than anyone else around.
And I think this opens up the possibility that In-ho could have come to see Gi-hun as a friend in some moments. There were moments in the games where he was a little too enthusiastic about their own wins for someone who does not need to put on a fully fake persona. So surely there could have been moments where In-ho genuinely considered Gi-hun a friend, however short-lived the moments were, however foreign the concept of a friend has become to him.
This could be what In-ho’s ‘conflicted feelings’ about Gi-hun (from the video linked up top) are all about.
How In-ho Sees Gi-Hun
Gi-hun refuses to remain powerless. He acts for change, refuses to give himself over to the system like In-ho has. He doesn’t shut up and take the money he’s given. He keeps fighting to end the Games, for other people who are caught in it.
And this does not make sense to In-ho. We don’t know enough about him. Maybe he tried this exact same thing that Gi-hun is trying. Or maybe he never did, and became who he is without putting up a proper fight.
This is someone who, so far, has remained unbending in his goal for change. This is someone who, in a facility designed to make people prioritize their own survival, gave a man he barely knew for 3 days a magazine, while he himself was getting shot at, while ammo was short.
In-ho lies to Gi-hun about his name, but he tells him about his wife. He bares an old part of his soul to him, the part of it that lingers from back when he was like Gi-hun. He has seen immeasurable death and has caused it, but there was a time he might have wanted to stop it too, and now there is someone like that again.
In-ho bared a part of himself to the person who came here to take him down because he saw his old self in him. And in turn that person did something In-ho never would’ve done at this point in time—Gi-hun extended this seemingly-pointless goodness to him too.
I like to think In-ho was so interested in Gi-hun because he wanted to see how he himself might've become, had he only taken a different view of life.
In-ho might deep down be expecting him to fail, yes, but he roots for him, roots for a version of himself that never made it. He’s curious. Lee Byung-hun has said In-ho is conflicted about his feelings towards Gi-hun, and secretly might even root for him (see the link at the bottom of this post).
In-ho stares at Gi-hun so intently to try and understand him as best he can. He wants to know what’s going on in Gi-hun’s head, the changes someone undergoes in short periods of time in enclosed death game facilities, a new experiment in the head of someone who is returning a second time. How will Gi-hun hold up? He wants to see his future.
The Breaking of Gi-hun’s Resolve (or the Changing)
Gi-hun loses the plot.
He couldn’t save everyone at first like he intended, he couldn’t get out fast because they got his tracker, and his resolve weakens, and he deems it necessary to sacrifice some people for the greater good.
When Gi-hun realizes he can’t save everyone, when he trades in an unnumbered amount of people for a shot to end the whole system, and he gives in.
Maybe In-ho sees himself in that weakening of Gi-hun’s resolve. It’s possible he doesn’t like it because he genuinely wanted Gi-hun to remain unwavering, as Lee Byung-hun said In-ho rooted for him. Or maybe In-ho does like it, because he’s satisfied for the confirmation that his view was right, that his path was inevitable all along.
This could be another point of conflict for In-ho’s feelings towards Gi-hun. Maybe that’s why he decided to fake the death of Young-il right then and put a stop to that operation: Of course, it’s partly because he’s Frontman and he can’t let the Games end. But on another hand, the coup was failing anyway, even without his betrayal and return as Frontman.
This then brings to light the possibility that he decided that, because Gi-hun gave in, In-ho decided he’s seen enough from by Gi-hun’s side. It confirmed something for him, confirmed that Gi-hun’s failure was inevitable because of human nature. And that was enough observing from up-close.
But then that confirmation, Gi-hun’s reluctant admission to the need of collateral, is thrown into question again, only a couple of hours later, when In-ho meets up with Gi-hun and Jung-bae. Gi-hun gives In-ho a magazine when ammo is short, and even when In-ho asks him, “Are you sure?” Gi-hun insists.
Sure, Gi-hun traded all those lives for this opportunity, but he is willing to risk lessening his own chance for survival for the sake of his friends, too.
“Are you sure?”
Then there is the question: Why did In-ho ask Gi-hun if he was sure about giving him the magazine?
Why would he provide the opportunity to think again on this? It wouldn’t benefit him at all if Gi-hun were to take the magazine back—Not that Gi-hun would. Gi-hun doesn’t say things he doesn’t mean, especially not in situations like this, and this even In-ho should know.
It could be a final test of Gi-hun’s character. Or it could be that this is one of those moments where In-ho genuinely saw Gi-hun as a friend.
Lee Byung-hun has said (from the video) that In-ho’s character was a very nuanced and detailed one that he had to be very careful portraying. That look on In-ho’s face when Gi-hun gave him that magazine was not any error on the actor’s end. It did mean something to In-ho, whatever it may have meant.
Jung-bae, Gi-hun, In-ho, and soju
I’m gonna get into the technicalities of exactly what In-ho’s motivations were in taking this specific bit of Gi-hun’s and Jung-bae’s conversation and using it with Gi-hun later.
I don’t entirely disagree when others call it jealousy, but it feels unfitting to arrive at that conclusion with no further thought. So here’s how I see it.
When Gi-hun and Jung-bae were talking about going out for soju, In-ho was eavesdropping. Then later, In-ho tells Gi-hun later to go out for soju together someday.
If In-ho really intended the unfulfilment of the shared plan between Gi-hun and himself to devastate, this was not an ideal or necessary move, and I’m sure he knows that. And I’ve covered earlier, to my interpretation he does not bother to act like someone he is not unnecessarily.
It would’ve been smarter if he had his own conversation about future plans with Gi-hun, instead of leeching off the soju date idea that Gi-hun already planned with Jung-bae.
In-ho probably did plan on killing Jung-bae at that point, be it eventually or through the later Games, because he does not really care about anyone besides Gi-hun enough to spare them. And maybe he intended to use Jung-bae’s, and Young-il, death as another test of Gi-hun’s character.
But In-ho/Young-il’s ‘death,’ objectively and inevitably, means less to Gi-hun than the death of his best friend. This is not to say that Gi-hun subconsciously measures the weights or grief values of these deaths, obviously. It is just to say that he has known In-ho for only a couple days and it is bound to impact him less, just like how Ali’s death did not hit him quite as hard as Sang-woo’s did.
(Admittedly, season 1 did have a lot less focus on character relationships than season 2 does, but it wasn’t so little that a lot would’ve changed in Gi-hun’s reactions either way).
This, combined with the order and intensity of events in the last episode, most likely means that Jung-bae’s death overshadows In-ho’s ‘death’ in Gi-Hun’s mind.
And this would be obvious. So what purpose does ‘You can treat me with a glass of soju when we get out’ even serve? It’s not going to affect Gi-hun in the long run as much as Jung-bae would.
Gi-hun had a much-needed conversation with his good friend and their plan to get soju was borne of reminiscence of their shared past and desire to make it out. But when In-ho brought it up, it was done in an offhand manner in a two-sentence exchange. This is impossible to happen anyway and In-ho knows it.
If he wanted Gi-hun’s full investment in a plan to go out together, maybe for the purpose of hurting/testing him with it, surely he would’ve done something more than this. He knew it wouldn’t stick as well. So then why did he say it? What purpose would this actually serve?
If, even after all this, In-ho he thought that this soju appointment would affect Gi-hun as much as Jung-bae’s might have, then I might say jealousy nurses delusion.
Or maybe it was something genuine. Maybe that moment, when Gi-hun thanked him for saving his life and In-ho said ‘You can get me a glass of soju when we get out,’ maybe that was another one of those short-lived moments in which In-ho did see Gi-hun as something like a friend.
Conclusion
Because of the fact that he is more genuine than one might originally guess (according to my interpretation), I would like to say that he did consider Gi-hun a friend sometimes.
And their dynamic is just so fascinating to me. Likely the first I’ve ever seen of this kind.
They’re in love, they hate each other, they’re friends, they’re opposites.
They’re the first person the other looks for upon separation, they’re trying to put a stop to the other’s plans, they’re good friends.
They’re representations of the roads the other didn’t take, they’re mirrors, they lean into each other more than necessary even when cuffed together, In-ho finds the pieces of humanity he lost in Gi-hun, they’re foils, they were friends.
I won’t be recovering for a while.

Wolf Faunus Weiss AU (omakes)
Weiss: [eating a steak so rare, an expert doctor could still save it].
Ruby: Everything alright?
W: [lips red from blood] Yes, why?
R: Well, you don't usually order red meats.
Yang: Or the blood accompanying them.
W: [realizing and cleaning the blood from her lips with a napkin] Oh, you're right.
R: You think it has anything to do with... [waves hand vaguely].
W: I don't know.
RW_Y: [they all look at Blake].
Blake: [enjoying her noodles with raw fish] Yes, a bit.
--
Weiss: Wow, having night vision is really another thing.
Blake: [used to it her entire life] I guess I never really considered the difference. So, humans just don't see in the dark?
W: Not really. [Looks up at the moon] Oh, wow.
B: [smiling understandingly] It's beautiful, isn't it?
W: It kind of makes me--
B: Want to break into song?
W: OMG, yes!
[A whole night later]
Ruby: [with baggy eyes, about to break into crying] This needs to stop somehow.
Yang: [messy hair, full of murderous intent] They didn't shut up all night!
--
Jaune: [playing with a ball against the wall on the school's back side]
Weiss: [shows up out of nowhere and catches the ball, growling happily]
J: I'm sorry, what?
W: [realizing what she just did, pitting the ball] This never happened.
J: I'm not even sure what happened.
W: Exactly [picks up the ball and leaves].
J: My life is weird.
--
Ozpin: [large conference for all students] It has come to my attention that many students at Beacon are hiding part of their identities.
Blake and Weiss: [lower themselves in their seats]
O: And while how you express or even reveal your identity is to be respected, I can assure you we at Beacon's staff will always protect our students, no matter who or what they are.
W: [whispering] Do you think he knows?
O: Even if you feel you're not safe being yourself with your family, you will find both a refuge and a home at Beacon under my care if needed.
B: [whispering] I'm pretty sure he's rubbing it in our faces he knows.
O: Even if you're secretly a faunus.
_WB_: [suddenly shouting] Oh, come freakin' on!
--
"Ah, to hell with it." Weiss reached up and undid the black bow Blake tied for her, revealing her new wolf faunus ears.
"Oh, this makes everything so much easier," Yang sighed.
"What do you mean?" Weiss was really confused.
Instead of replying, both Ruby and Yang got up from the bed. Yang undid her belt, and from behind her, a crocodile tail showed up. Ruby by her part rustled her hair, revealing a pair of wolf ears similar to Weiss', only slightly larger.
"What?" Weiss and Blake were flabbergasted.

I’m still thinking about Umemiya’s team as well as everyone else involved in the AU but! For now! Take our beloved blushy boy!
Tumblr media
Current Team:
Absol (Partner Pokemon)
Riolu
Eevee
Togepi
Pichu
To address the obvious theme here: friendship. Yes, they’re also all adorable and Sakura deserves cute things, but primarily they’re a good representation of his canon-typical character growth — as in, you’re going to see these babies evolve at crucial moments during Sakura’s journey, and almost exclusively to show he’s opened his heart to another traveling companion.
And then there’s Absol, my personal favorite misunderstood Pokemon. A so-called harbinger of disaster who’s actually vital to preventing loss of life and resources. It’s my favorite pick for Sakura because it’s just so damn fitting for who he is and how his friends come to see him.
I’m leaving the last spot open for now but I’m leaning towards having him run into Type: Null at some point (don’t ask me how, this is all vibes and no plot at this point). It’s another friendship evolution so it’s especially good for this line-up, plus I appreciate that its in-game relevance lines up with Sakura’s canon themes again.

Ulmo alone came not to the Trees, but went down to the beach of Eldamar, and there he stood gazing into the gloom far out to sea, and he called often with his most mighty voice as though he would draw back those truants to the bosom of the Gods, and while he played deep longing music on his magic conches, and to him alone, lest it Varda lady of the stars, was the going of the Gnomes [Noldor] a greater grief than even the ruin of the Trees. -J R R Tolkien, The Book of Lost Tales, "The Tale of the Sun and Moon."

Usually it's not the reading per se but what comes with it:
if you're not fast enough, if you didn't understand something, if you couldn't focus ect.... some teachers won't give you the benefit of doubt or help you while others will downright humiliate you and scare you from touching a book forever. they often force you to read the way they want you to read and a lot of people think they cannot read well because of that.
That's why a lot of people are traumatized. They associate it with books because that's how they lived it.
Just because it was not traumatizing for you doesn't mean others don't have actual PTSD symptom from it.
You can encourage people to try new thing, to get out of their comfort zone without invalidating their life experience.

The What Corps?
“we have you now spook! there is nowhere you can run and hide with our new spectral tethers active!”
Danny winces at the small metal clips that have hooked themselves in his leg, some new GIW tech that is messing with his powers.
“oh yeah? I was just dying for you guys to give me a challenge” plan. plan. He's gotta think of a plan to get out of here and fast. He takes a steadying breath and starts to look for anything that can help him.
he can’t get caught here. He just can't. He simply won’t allow himself.
suddenly the two GIW goons in front of him click their earpieces to clearly listen to what someone else is telling them, Danny is very glad for his own enhanced senses.
“Operatives K and O, be advised, there have been sightings of a new ectoplasmic entity near your location. Other operatives report that it’s incredibly small and moves fast. watch your backs, this may be an ambush”
small and fast? it better not be some poor little blob ghost, Danny sort of hopes it’s some manner of ectowasp, at least that could be entertaining to see.
“you better not be hoping for back up, ecto scum”
“I have no idea what you are talking about”
It's then that a small bright green light zips on scene and weaves through crowds in the distance with ease and then speeds up towards the two operatives who do not hesitate to shoot, missing completely like the storm troopers they are.
Whatever it is, it is indeed going very fast but Danny manages to figure out what it looks like and it appears to be a… ring?
“hold it you tiny accessory shaped ecto fiend!”
The ring does a speedy circle around Operative O while K is lining up a shot and ends up blasting the poor guy point blank in his face, “O!”
Danny takes a step forward with an arm outstretched and a “oh damn! Are you alright?” on his lips when the ring takes the chance to slip on his finger. “Daniel Fenton of Earth”
Danny already had a freakout about a ghost jewelry getting on him, his experiences with those so far have been incredibly bad after all, what with the rings and crowns and pendants… now this damn thing is just straight up outing him!
Thank the ancients the two GIW stooges are too busy with each other right now to pay close attention to what this weird ring is saying.
“You have the ability to overcome great fear” ah so this is related to him steeling himself just now? Maybe? or something??
You have been chosen” never good, we are back to freaking out again.
“Welcome to the green lantern corps”
… the what?
Danny notices that his usual outfit suddenly has more green going on, and his DP symbol has some sort of… he guess it’s supposed to be a lantern, maybe? shape around it.
He’s somehow even more glowy now, and there is something on his face. Feeling its shape makes him think it’s some sort of mask.
The metal clip things are no longer attached to his legs though so that’s great!
“You’re not getting away so easily ecto scum! sentient ghost paraphernalia coming to your rescue or no!” They both aim their weapons to take a shot.
Danny figures he can now easily hold them back with his usual shields,“you guys realize you just called this weird ring sentient and thereby negate the whole nonsentie-ack!”
“Attacking a corps lantern is punishable offense as of the instatement of the galactic diplomatic immunity as declared by the-” Okay so now Danny is just raising his eyebrow at this weird as fuck ring. Just what is it going on about?
“notifying nearby lanterns and requesting assistance with apprehension of hostiles”
what?
“getting your friends to help you out vile spook? such a thing is useless with the Blackout still very much in place”
Well… the two streaks of green light in the distance is making Danny doubt that statement.
Maybe there is more to this Lantern corps thing than he thought… And something tells him his life is about to get even more complicated than it already is.

⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖࣪  lover !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ᝰ.ᐟ even if he doesn't exude this energy to outsiders, you're happy to know that your boyfriend is the biggest simp around when it comes to you. or: the cute things he'll do for you.  (fem!reader)
featuring yoichi isagi, seishiro nagi, reo mikage, rin itoshi, rensuke kunigami content contains hotel bathroom sinks designed by a man, slight jealousy (reo is the jealous boyfriend), height differences (nagi + kunigami + rin are described as taller), wearing his clothes + clothes is described to be oversized on you (nagi), called a simp by his teammates (kunigami), clingy bf (yoichi <3) author's notes hq version coming soon!!! i just wanted to write something soft n fluffy for once <3
Tumblr media
౨ৎ YOICHI ISAGI — goes viral on tiktok when the two of you go on vacation to celebrate your second year anniversary. you're recording yourself from the bathroom of the private villa he rented out for the two of you, and you originally wanted to record what an absolute joke the sink is. there is literally no counter space. nowhere to place any of your makeup or skincare products. yoichi interupts the video unknowingly, knocking softly and asking if he can come in. he doesn't realize you're filming, and it's entirely genuine when he asks, "is everything okay? you sounded frustrated? did you need help opening something?" you laugh before explaining the situation, and he's silent for all but one second before he goes, "oh! i'll just hold your makeup bag, and i'll hand you the stuff when you need it." (poor yoichi means well, but he's standing there for over an hour as you laugh at him when he can't tell the difference between a tube of lipgloss and liquid blush. the look of concentration on his face as he nods intently while you explain what each product is for is absolutely adorable; it's the same concentrated look he gets when he's reviewing game footage, meaning he's taking this seriously for you.) he's also the type that loves to follow you around. it's a common joke for his fans to comment "walk him like a dog, sis!" on any candid photos of you + yoichi because he is almost always holding your hand while trailing behind you. he's like your shadow as he follows you around different stores in the mall, and even when you tell him he can just sit down with the other boyfriends while you just try on some clothes, he refuses to leave your side. tries to follow you to the dressing room, and gets all pouty when he realizes he's not allowed in. makes you walk outside the dressing room with the new outfits on so he can rate them (he is incredibly biased and believes everything looks good on you and forces you to bring everything to the cashier so he can swipe his card to get it for you <3)
౨ৎ REO MIKAGE — cannot handle anyone else taking up large chunks of your time, especially when he rarely gets to see you during game season. makes a face anytime he realizes that the server at the restaurant is a guy. the server will smile at you and tell you that he'll get started on that meal for you right away, and reo leans forward once he's gone and goes, "i can't believe he was flirting with you right in front of me! disgusting!" he's actually convinced that every man in the world wants you for themselves, and if you tease him by threatening to run off with any of these men, he'll instantly frown and start telling you to take that back right now! however, he is entirely convinced that you are the greatest thing to ever grace this earth, and he feels so proud whenever you two are out in public and a fan or an employee compliments you. they could say anything postive about you, and he'll beam with pride, going "i know, right? i tell her this all the time!" it's almost common knowledge that the easiest way to get on reo's good side is to treat you well. he also loves listening to you gossip, and is the type of boyfriend who loves all your friends (even if he can't quite remember their names; it's only important that they treat you kindly and loyally), and hates everyone that you hate. he's also less forgiving than you; if someone backstabs you but you forgive them and grant them a second chance, just know that reo still hates their guts and he'll make it incredibly obvious.
౨ৎ SEISHIRO NAGI — can’t help but make video game versions of the two of you any chance he gets. he’ll pretend to not notice the way your eyes light up when you pass by any claw machine containing plushies of your favorite anime characters, but somehow he’ll manage to find himself at the machine, casually winning you your favorite as if the game isn’t designed to make everyone lose. (he’s just that good.) even if you’re not as big of a gamer as him, he’ll watch you play sims 4 (and subsequently watch you spend 3 hours on the create-a-sim section because you’re trying to create a perfect carbon copy of the two of you.) looks for his favorite hoodie only to glance over at your still-sleeping form on his bed and realizes that you’re wearing it. you look adorable in it; he’s taller than you, bigger in every aspect, so the material swallows you up. (he doesn’t wake you up nor does he ask for it back.) despite the fact that he’s taller than you, nagi is definitely a big baby, and is constantly the little spoon. he loves to come home and bury his face in your neck, loves the way you gently run your fingers through his hair (it’s the easiest way for him to fall asleep), and he’ll constantly try to find ways for you to hold him.
౨ৎ RIN ITOSHI — grants you “scary dog privilege.” literally will mean mug every man in the street as the two of you are walking together. everyone thinks that rin would be a selfish lover from his outside appearance, but he surprisingly puts up with a lot of your antics because he loves you so much. you don’t bother buying a step stool because you count on rin to get you anything you need from the tall shelves (and when you’re mad at him, he’ll purposely find ways to get all your most-used items on a hard-to-reach area so you have to sulkily seek him out and ask for his help. there’s no way in hell you put your face wash on top of the fridge, and rin looks all too happy to grab it for you.) he has a very bare social media account and most of the time, he just posts whatever his publicists draft up for him. the only post he has personally created and shared himself is the one of you on your birthday; in a sea of promotional posters and professionally taken game highlights, the smiling faces of you and rin stand out. (it’s the happiest any of his fans have ever seen him look.)
౨ৎ RENSUKE KUNIGAMI — his teammates make fun of him because he is notoriously loyal to you. they tricked him and took him out to a strip club, and there’s a viral video of kunigami staring intently at his phone, never looking up once at his surroundings. (he was going through your instagram feed + then ran out of photos to look at, so he started going through his camera roll to look at pictures and videos of you.) is the boyfriend who embodies the phrase ‘wear whatever you want, baby, i can fight.’ there’s a photo of you two that did numbers on pinterest. kunigmai is such a big guy, towers over you, honestly, but he readily gets down on his knees for you. in the photo, you two are dressed up to attend a gala. he’s on his knees, and you have one high-heel clad foot resting on the top of his thigh as he looks down and is adjusting the ankle strap of your heel for you. his friends shared the photo in the team groupchat and called him a simp, but kunigami knows that if they had someone half as great as you, they’d act just the same.

The Fentons might have settled in the middle of bumfuck nowhere but they did have quite the reputation from their crazy antics. It is well known that:
1. Atleast one of the partner pair is always built like a brick shit house.
2. They all have a time period where they pick up a ton of random skills and useless knowledge before settling down on their particular niche.
3. A person of Fenton descent will always fall for the most dangerous person around them.
4. A Fenton will always bounce back from anything. They can die but they cannot be killed by mortal means.
5. They have the bad habit of unconsciously putting themselves in harms way.
The traits mentioned wouldn't have been a problem if the heros found out about them however due to facts 2, 3, 4 and, 5 the Fentons were well known to the villains.
This leads to the situation Danny now found himself in after he tripped off of a rooftop and got hit by a car into a warehouse building.
Picking himself up from the rubble with groan and a crack of his back Danny took stock of his situation. The closest was a pretty lady that vaguely looked familiar along with a few goons and a dude in a bat furry costume with a bunch of people. The youngest was cosplaying a traffic light. A girl with a purple cloak. A girl in black was dressed similarly enough to the bat furry. Etc.
It looked like he interrupted some kind of fight and now they all just stood there uncertain of what to do.
The lady suddenly grabbed him by the collar and yanked his head down to her level as she examined him. "Oh fuck me sideways your a Fenton... If your here then..." She quickly let go of him.
It took Danny half a second before he could place her. "Oh yeah! You are that lady uncle Robby was pinning after, Shiv something."
The cosplayers all looked uncertain and he could feel the concern radiating from them.
"I am Lady Shiva and yes Robert certainly is something. First time I found a man I couldn't kill." The lady, Shiva, a fond look on her face.
"You got any allergies? Mom and dad's 30th anniversary is coming up this November. Just about the whole family is coming." Danny said giving her a piece of paper with the date and location.
"is Alicia going to be there?" Lady Shiva said as she gripped her blades tighter, a predatory smile on her face.
"I did say the *whole* family. Even Gruncle Ra is coming." Danny explained with a shrug.
"Yes!" Shiva exclaimed. "Between you and me I still don't know how Cheetah manages to pull your aunt."
"I try to forget. I just remember that they are banned from 40 countries." Danny said as he shuddered. After a quick glance at his watch he bolted for the hole in the wall. "Oh shit I have to go pick up my sister from Arkham!"
As he ran he distantly heard Lady Shiva yell "I'll be there and call me aunt Shiva!"

The Sanitized Lore of Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Tevinter is the heart of slavery in Thedas. This lore has been established in every game, novel, comic, and other extended material in the Dragon Age franchise to date that so much as mentions the nation. But in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, when we are finally able to actually visit this location for the first time… this rampant slavery we’ve heard so much about is nowhere to be found. It’s talked about here and there; Neve mentions The Viper has a history of freeing slaves, as does Rook themselves if they choose the Shadow Dragon faction as their origin, for example. But walking down the streets of Minrathous, you’d never know. Because Dragon Age: The Veilguard, for all its enjoyment otherwise, has one glaring issue: It’s too clean.
The world of Thedas is full of injustices. Humans persecute elves, fear qunari, and belittle dwarves. Mages of any race are treated like caged animals in most places. The nobility is corrupt. Although, Dragon Age has not always handled these injustices well, mind you. Many, many times I’ve found myself frustrated with moments that just feel like a Racism Simulator. But what makes it worth it, is when you can actually do something about it. These injustices are things that a good-aligned character strives to fight back against, maybe even for very personal reasons. Part of the power-fantasy for many minorities is that this fight feels tangible. I cannot arrange the assassination of a corrupt politician in real life, but I sure can get Celene Valmont stabbed to death in Dragon Age: Inquisition, for example. Additionally, these fictional injustices can be used to make statements on real life parallels, like any source of media. For example, no, the Chant of Light is not real, but acting as a stand-in for Catholicism, through a media analysis lens we can explore what the Chant of Light communicates on a figurative level.
When starting Dragon Age: The Veilguard and selecting to play as an elf – this should be unsurprising to anyone who is familiar with my bias towards them – I was fully prepared to enter the streets of Minrathous and immediately get called “knife-ear” or “rabbit”. But this did not happen. I thought perhaps it was just a prologue thing, but returning to Minrathous once again, there was not a single shred of disapproval from any NPC I encountered that wasn’t a generic enemy to fight. And even the generic enemies, the Tevinter Nationalist cult of the Venatori, didn’t seem to care at all that I was a lineage they deemed inferior before now. This is a stark difference from entering the Winter Palace in Dragon Age: Inquisition and immediately getting hit with court disapproval and insults. Are we now to believe that Tevinter has somehow solved its astronomical racism and classism problems in the ten years since the past game? Or perhaps are we to believe all the characters who have demonstrated Tevinter’s systemic discriminatory views were just lying or outliers? Because it makes absolutely no sense at all for this horribly corrupt nation to not have a shred of reactivity to an elven or qunari Rook prancing around. But here were are, and not a single NPC even recognizes my character’s lineage. And because this is so different from every single past game, it feels weird.
As an elf, you have the option to make a comment about how “too many humans look down on us” in one scene early in the game. You can also talk to Bellara and Davrin, the elven companions, about concerns that people won’t trust elves after finding out about the big bad Ancient Evanuris… but this is presented as if elves don’t already face persecution. It’s all so limited in scope that it could be all too easily missed if you are not paying very close attention, and coming into the game with pre-existing lore knowledge.
All this made it easy to first assume that the developers simply over-corrected an attempt to address the Racism Simulator moments. And if that was the case, than I would at least give credit to effort; they did not find the right balance, but they at least tried. However, the sudden lack of discrimination against different lineages in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is not the only sanitized example of lore present.
In Dragon Age: Origins, Zevran Arainai is a companion who is from the Antivan Crows; a group of assassins. He discusses in detail how the Crows buy children and raise them into murder machines through all kinds of torture. The World of Thedas books also describe how the Antivan Crows work, echoing what Zevran says and expanding that of the recruitment, only a select handful of those taken by the Crows even survive. When you start Dragon Age: The Veilguard as an Antivan Crow, you immediately unlock a re-used codex entry from the past, “The Crows and Queen Madrigal”, that says the following:
“His guild has a reputation to uphold. They are ruthless, efficient, and discreet. How would they maintain such notoriety if agents routinely revealed the names of employers with something as "banal" as torture.”
Ruthless, efficient, and discreet. Torture is banal. This is what the Crows were before Dragon Age: The Veilguard decided to take them in a very different direction. The Antivan Crows in this latest game are painted as freedom fighters against the Antaam occupation of Treviso. Teia calls the Crows “patriots”. And while I can certainly believe that the Crows would have enough motivation to fight back against the Antaam, given that it is in direct opposition to their own goals, I cannot understand why they are suddenly suggested to be morally good. They are assassins. They treat their people like tools and murder for money. Even as recent as the Tevinter Nights story Eight Little Talons, it is addressed that the Antivan Crows are in it for the coin and power, with characters like Teia being outliers for wanting to change that. It makes the use of the older codex all the more confusing, as it sets the Antivan Crows up as something they are no longer portrayed as.
I personally think it would have been really interesting to explore a morally corrupt faction in comparison to say, the Shadow Dragons. Perhaps even as a protagonist, address things like the enslavement of “recruits” to make the faction at least somewhat better. (They are still assassins, after all.) Instead, we’re just supposed to ignore everything unsavory about them, I suppose…
We could discuss even further examples. Like how the Lords of Fortune pillage ruins but it’s okay, because they never sell artifacts of cultural importance, supposedly. Or how the only problem with the Templar Order in Tevinter is just the “bad apples” that work with Venatori. I could go on, but I don’t think I have to.
It is because of all this sanitization, that I cannot believe this was simply over-correction on a developmental part. Especially when there is still racism in the game, in other forms. The impression I’m left with feels far deeper than that; it feels corporate. As if a computer ran through the game’s script and got rid of anything with “too much” political substance. The strongest statements are hidden in codex entries, and I almost suspect they had to be snuck in.
Between a Racism Simulator and just ignoring anything bad whatsoever, I believe a balance is achievable; that sweet spot that actually has something to say about what it is presenting. I know it is achievable, because there are a few bright spots of this that I’ve encountered in Dragon Age: The Veilguard too. For example, some of the codex entries like I mentioned, and almost all the content with the Grey Wardens thus far. It is a shame there is not more content on this level.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is overall still a fun game, in my opinion. But it’s hard to argue that it isn’t missing the grit of its predecessors. The sharp edges have been smoothed. The claws have been removed. The house has been baby-proofed. And for what purpose?

Thinking about a certain scene in Dungeon Meshi that completely encapsulates the Autistic experience of making friends as an adult and how hard it is to try and navigate it without ending up getting hurt.
Tumblr media
Like IDK about y'all, but this is a common problem ALOT of Autistic Adults face when trying to make friends with other people, because unlike children who aren't good at keeping their opinions to themselves, Adults ARE. In society, we're even encouraged to "keep the peace" "be polite" and etc, which commonly leads to awful scenarios as shown above when Laois finds out his buddy has come to resent who Laois is without actually telling him. All too often the friends that we love to hang out with, people that we're so happy to spend time with, don't feel the same way and in many cases, come to blame us for our social cues or lack thereof.
And when/if we do eventually find out how our friend feels, Dungeon Meshi hits us with another painful panel of how that usually ends up playing out.

It's hard for Adults with Autism to make friends, and even harder to maintain them because alot of the ways Neurotypicals tell other Neurotypicals that they don't like a certain behavior is by quietly disengaging. Whether that involves having one sentence answers, going quiet, or having a certain tone in their voice, all those things signal annoyance or disapproval, but for the Neurodivergents, those subtle cues are completely missed.
And yet when we inevitably discover we DID do something, it is natural to ask "well why didn't you tell me?" because in our minds, it should've been the next step in the equation. However for the Neurotypicals, that's NOT something to bring up. Its important to be SUBTLE about the issue at hand and rely on signals to tell the other person. Blame is placed on us for not noticing the "obvious" signs of disapproval rather than the idea of talking it out as such things are uncomfortable and harder to do. Alot of the time what ends up happening is resentment due to the idea that it was "obvious" and the fact one didn't notice indicates a deliberate ignorance rather than a complete unawareness. It ends up calling into question our quality as a person and our sincerity. We get called "fake" or "malicious" or even "stupid" for failing social cues rather than questioning the decision to be indirect and vague.
For a manga about exploring the dungeon, it seems that the artist would rather explore very real and prevalent dynamics in society with the adventuring premise as a backdrop. I felt VERY seen in these panels, and many others, because it happens so suddenly and dare I say it, plainly. There's no dramatic build-up or spectacle made and in essence, it just Happens.
I think that's what makes the scene hit even harder. It seemingly comes out of nowhere for Laois, like how it always comes out of nowhere for alot of people, and it's never a dramatic twist either. It's always mundane and hurtful. A sudden unforeseen bump in the road that ends up calling into question one's entire friendship with someone and consequent other friendships. It asks "what if other friends feel the same. What if the people that I really like actually hate me and I don't know it?" Or at least that's what I came away with after reading the chapter. I've been where Laois was and the only reason I'm not there now is because I lost the naivete I had and doubt everyone else's sincerity.
