Shared here today by Matthew Boroson on Facebook. (ETA: Gaining inspiration from other authors is great. Lifting passages and avoiding giving credit isn’t.)
Tanith Lee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy Award for best novel, for the second book of the Flat Earth series. She died in 2015. You can buy Tales From the Flat Earth here and here .
#neil gaiman#tanith lee#I had no idea#this has made me even angrier#and also clarifies a few more things for me#anyway I thought you’d want to know#eta: inspiration is not plagiarism — the problem is not that he was inspired by other works#most good authors are#the problem is lifting passages#and the other problem is not crediting inspiration where it’s clearly due

i think theres this idea in the general public that the "best" fanfic gets turned into real books like 50 shades of grey. but the truth is that the best fanfic can never be published as an actual book because its intricately woven into the canon material so its inseparable even if you change the names
#no shade (ha) to 50 shades. ive never actually read it so idk if its good#but imo the idea of creating an au fanfic thats so divorced from the original work is boring! why are you even making a fanfic atp#the only good fanfic is when you can tell the author loves the source material and uses it#the best fanfics ive ever read could never be published as actual books because it wouldnt work without the context of the original story

Mentioning Tusk Love and the potential of other independent stories set in Exandria reminded me of an old discord conversation about how they could Fix the courting of the crick for publishing (seeing as it's canonically a Bad Book due to being super dry and also racist towards drow) without breaking canon:
Rename it 'The Courting of the Kryn - a Reimagining of the Classic Story, by Jester Lavorre'
Present it as an in-universe fanfic-ish rewrite. There's a foreword where 'Jester' elaborates on the inaccuracies of the original, the impact the story had on her, and the importance of Dynasty-Empire relations. There's an acknowledgement section where she thanks Caleb and Beau as 'consultants on Empire culture', as well as an unnamed/under fake name/clearly Essek as an 'expert on the Luxon, dunamancy and Dynasty culture'. All his information on spy networks is eerily accurate and has his former co-workers scrambling. (He makes her keep all the dry historical accounts, but now it's accurate (with added dick-related puns)). She mentions that she reached out to the Bright Queen who reluctantly (after 5 messages in a row) gave some pointers. In her frantic research she possibly made some breakthroughs on the nature on the Luxon that has Essek reeling (there's a 'further reading' section where she lists the academic paper he wrote building on her discoveries and an entire list of the sources her consultants used).
For extra fun and meta-ness, include footnotes where she comments on things she changed/removed from the original and why, how various scenes may have been inspired by a real life couple or events, etc. Some of the footnotes are written by her consultants. Caleb and Essek get into arguments on dunamancy theory which is actually thinly veiled flirting. There's anatomically accurate drow sex (it's unclear whether the consultant was Essek or Caleb or possibly a certain brother, who was also consulted on Dynasty military practices).
#I don't know what the actual story would be though#it would be funny if the main couple was clearly inspired by shadowgast#but also i think the story itself should be able to stand on its own without the framing narrative similar to tusk love#part of this was copied from my old discord messages bc man i still really like this idea#*quietly slides this under critical role's studio door with my contact info attached*#critical role#nella talks cr#if you want to make it extra EXTRA meta the story could still clearly be by jester but under a pen-name with no notes of her own#and the footnotes/authors notes are by a future researcher who's studying the work#and has connected it to the famous artist jester lavorre#and is now puzzling together her and the nein's entire lives in the footnotes

hi we’re looking at kotokos legs

!!! this is still a restraint! i think this is specifically to keep her from fully extending— shes always cowering now, giving a sort of frightened animal vibe i think is really good to put on her specifically..

look at how it relaxes when she does! making someone who uses and needs that strength and anger to carry out their goals feel unimaginably weak is an absolutely crazy punishment i think. shes been DEFANGED milgram you’re crazy
#chattering#kotoko yuzuriha#milgram#i think along with the idea she has to ask for help when it comes to anything needing hands..#she’s been made a weakling. she can’t be the judgment call. the warden role has been ripped from her and shes lost authority#(eating rocks) I DONT LIKE THIS TRIAL

I wrote two songs for a concept album based on that fic that will never see the light of day. It was actually insane.
One of my favorite fanfics I’ve ever read was for a public access edutainment show for elementary schoolers. And the author was a mother, right? And in the authors notes for every chapter there was a bible quote that only made sense if you interpreted it as the main character being an allegory for Jesus Christ
#txt#the fic is really fascinating to me because the dynamic the couple in it has is sooooo unhealthy#but the author has no idea?#like it’s so romanticized but the characters health keeps getting worse#and it’s impossible for me to tell if the writer is self aware or not#because it’s like ok he just gave up his entire sense of identity willingly because this girl asked him to#and he tried to off himself over it because he feels like his life is meaningless without her#and she’s like. coddling him and encouraging this behavior right#and the author is like#in the authors notes#they’re such a cute couple!!#and I’m like. my eyes widen as I turn to the crowd#what are we talking about here man#like don’t get me wrong#I love toxic romance as much as the next guy#but the lack of self awareness was truly fascinating#it’s like they read a Wikipedia article on things not to say to your partner with bpd and took it as a tutorial

I need more dca fics to read, not just because they're all so cool and special and unique-
I want to collect their y/n's in my pocket, and bring back the y/nverse. All of them in a lil pocket dimension (the dca stay in their respective stories, this place is reserved for the self inserts and side characters/family to interact. The boys can have their own pocket dimension)
The y/ns live on the same street or apartment complex, being bunched into groups that are roomies
For example. Bamsara's Solar Lunacy y/n, Paper-Lilypie's CCRT y/n, and bones-of-a-rabbit's staffbot y/n. SB is there so CCRT can perform routine maintenance, plus CCRT can be a but messy, plus they could help clean up after ccrt's kids. SL is where, you may ask? Their room has been vacant for some time, but CCRT and SB keep it clean and regularly dusted, out of respect. They don't know if or when their friend will return, but they'll be welcome at any time.
Naffeclipse's y/ns share a suite, probably.
spadillelicious's LDR y/n could stay with saltciphblr's lovebug au y/n
Again, I need to read more to get a better feel of the different wonderful y/n's
This probably won't be uploaded, maybe someday, but this is mostly self indulgence that my brain has been blasting on repeat all day
Into the y/nverse, I raise you from the depths

headcanons for the employers have somehow turned into a crossover with de skills
#madness combat#so the thought process is this#based on the episodes the auditor is most likely to be associated with physical pain raw strength and endurance#he appears to be descended to the level of mortals and their physical world and he clearly doesn't mind drinking some sugary drinks#i also like the idea of stygian being his counterpart thematically related to souls and rituals#and through understanding other’s emotions they could be frighteningly comforting to those they guide through the mortal coils#the authority expressed by calling someone a worm seems comical#and the conductor sounds like someone who has something to do with interfacing#it would be interesting if they were the one who set nevada in motion with lightnings and stuff like that#that leaves the deliberator who holds all the knowledge and ability to reason for the rest of the employers#and like what if they were a little more dramatic.#madness project nexus#de skills#madness combat employers

there's a lot of Jason as a fanfic writer headcanons (which I love) but we're sleeping on the bat that is canonically not just a huge nerd but also a great writer: duke
where's he's at now he doesn't do hobbies he barely does humaning, he's The Signal practically full time, all his fics are on permanent hiatus
theres a better future where he learns to take breaks and has a note on his mega fic like "life ya know?" like No duke we Don't know
#duke thomas#please tell me in the tags what kind of fics you think duke writes#boygirltreehouse gave me the idea but he 100% writes warrior cats fic#he has a 500k uncompleted fic and u know damian is 🤏 to doxxing the author only to find out he lives down the hall#batfam#bread talk#this is incredibly unpolished an i can't force myself to word better#but its been sitting in my drafts since this morning and i can't stand it so take this shit

Okay so I have a lot of thoughts about the whole thing of the Gerudo being a race of entirely women, with the only exception being one man born every hundred years, and that man automatically being their king. Now this worldbuilding comes from Ocarina of Time, and there's obviously a metric fuckton of unfortunate implications there, because it was 1998. And it seems that Tears of the Kingdom is sticking with the lore of Gerudo men being extremely rare and becoming the King of their people, which once again has a metric fuckton of unfortunate implications because it's 2023 and Nintendo has somehow gotten even worse about this shit.
But let's set aside the whole... everything, and look at this from just the in-universe perspective. How does it work? I mean, it's pretty clear that there is no overlap between the kings; the old ones are normally long gone by the time a new one is born, but the Gerudo manage to take care of themselves during the hangtime. So they must have an established system of government and leadership that doesn't involve a king, and somehow that system is set up in a way that does a smooth transfer of power once a new king is born and old enough to take the throne. But why bother always declaring a random guy to be your King when you already have a perfectly functional system in place?
I mean again, the whole thing has a lot of sexist implications, but we're not looking at this from a real world context, we're examining it in-universe. And we could just go the lazy route and say that their king is in charge just because he's the only man, but I don't like that. I mean come on, the Gerudo are a race of entirely women, and most of their outside problems come from Hylian men being creepy about it. They are entirely a matriarchy; there is literally no reason for their culture to have an inherent respect for men, even if the man in question is one of them. And they're desert people; they live in an extremely harsh and dangerous landscape, if they don't have their shit together, they will die. By sheer necessity, their culture needs to put a lot of value in being practical, because if they're stupid about things, people die. They really can't afford to have a shitty leader take over, and just letting some guy take the wheel doesn't really fit with the way their culture must otherwise work.
So again, why the fuck do they bother having a King?
I think it's mainly just a ceremonial position. Yes, if the guy is a good leader he'll be in charge, but if he isn't good at being a King or isn't interested in the job... fuck it, they've already got a functional government system that's been leading their people the whole time, why fix what isn't broken? The title of Gerudo King isn't about leadership or power. I think it's more about belonging. Because the Gerudo are a culture where every single one of them can be defined in the same way... and there is exactly one exception once a century. Men are considered to be inherently outsiders at the best of times, and more often they're enemies. A man born into this culture is a natural outsider; he is completely unique, and that means he doesn't really fit into his community. And well... when someone is fundamentally different from the rest of their community, they tend to be ostracized.
So I think that's why the position of Gerudo King exists. It isn't about them needing or even wanting a man to lead them. The title of King doesn't need to involve any leadership at all. It's about giving the man born every century a place in their society. It's a way of saying yes, you are one of us, you are a Gerudo, you belong here, you are wanted and you are loved.
The Gerudo know that every hundred years, one of their children will be fundamentally different from all of his peers. And so their society is built to ensure that a child who is completely different from them will still be loved and accepted. He will always have a place in their society. He doesn't need to earn their love, he has it just for existing. These are his people.
The title of Gerudo King isn't an inherent position of authority. It's a promise of acceptance.
#legend of zelda#ganondorf#tears of the kingdom#gerudo#look i have so many thoughts about how their society works#and for the record i really hate the implied bioessentialist gender stuff#but this is my headcanon on the whole gerudo king thing#if their king wants authority he still needs to earn it like everyone else#but they make sure he always has a place among his people#look growing up Different from your peers is a fucking nightmare#as any neurodivergent/disabled/queer kid can attest#i like the idea of gerudo society being structured around ensuring all their children felt like they belonged there#and having a system ready to go for the one kid they KNOW will be the most different

Do you know the number of manga authors who have died in the last decade? Do you know the number of physical illnesses a mangaka can develop due to his work? Muscle and posture problems, kidney problems, circulation problems. Not to mention that in recent years it is also common to say “being sick” to have depression, something that many manga artists suffer from due to the media exposure of their works to hundreds of thousands of ungrateful people who constantly insult and harass them.
Some of y'all are disgusting.
I hope I don't see any of you posting ANYTHING about the importance of mental health on your shitty profiles after everything you're doing with Gege Akutami. You're so self-fucking-centered and ungrateful.
#authors being constantly sick sadly has been a tendency these last years#i'm really sorry for them#also hold my japanese labor expliotation normalization and work culture#you are SICK everyone#the things you're saying to justify your forced ideas of mediocrity have reach a certain point#where i wish not to breath the same air as you#dís-gus-ting#i hope you ever get to grow up#jujutsu kaisen#@meyers#jjk 262#gege akutami#—meyers»talks🌸

I simply think this fandom doesn't give Wei Wuxian enough credit for the various ways in which he saved Lan Wangji
#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#wangxian#idk man- i just see a lot of “Lan Wangji has always been protecting Wei Wuxian” posts and its like...#I mean... Lan Wangji has always certainly been trying to protect Wei Wuxian#it took him a long time to figure how to successfully do that though#rereading the books rn and noticing theres a lot of instances that could be read as lwj being frustrated over his inability to protect wwx#like he seemed ready to cry when wwx went missing for a while and then came back with the cursed leg#lwj has always been great at protecting wwx from physical threats (ex: waterborn abyss) but had no idea how to protect him from himself#meanwhile wwx has always been instictually good at saving lwj from both#like I'm 100% lwj would've become like Jiang Cheng if wwx hadn't snapped him out of the blindly following authority thing#and also like... 15 y/o lwj wasnt happy with his life. he was lonely and stressed and literally signing up to be flogged whenever he goofed#wwx is who allowed lwj to grow up by showing him what it was like to actually be a kid (shown in story whenever lwj gets drunk)#he led lwj to having a more flexible mindset. and it both let lwj relax and set lwj up to be a better parent#looking into lwj's dynamic with the juniors- he lets them break a fuck ton of the petty rules and encourages them to question authority#he also teaches them to not be married to any one meathod of problem solving#wwx is also able to save lwj from his own stubbornness#ex: carrying lwj when he broke his leg. getting lwj to cough up bad blood. getting lwj to keep the rabbits#wwx also tends to give lwj the words he has trouble saying himself. helps him communicate#wwx also protects lwj in fights a lot but thats narratively less important#except the various times wwx puts himself in danger to help lwj. those times are what made it so lwj could never move on from wwx#like with the cave incident#or when wwx helped surpress the arm instead of using the chaos to escape cloud recesses#tldr i guess: i think this fandom tends to treat lwj being the best like its natural to him when really wwx accidentaly rewired his brain#I'm looking directly at fanfic writers who act like the Lans would've treated wwx better than the Jiangs#lwj had to do so much work and self reflection post meeting wwx to be the way he is. he is not the sole product of the Lan teachings

people who’ve only seen hatchetfield: starkid has like practically no gay characters :/
the avp trilogy which has been sitting right there for probably most of their lives and is the foundation of everything:

plus these less explicit more headcanony (but like, BARELY) examples that i really think are worth mentioning as well, i have receipts don’t tempt me i will literally make an entire video about this stuff (and i might actually):

#i will literally fight you over lavender btw#i was tempted to put her in the first category#(i will fight you about ron as well)#also like…#girl nobody Has to watch everything but if they’re gonna make sweeping statements like this and act like authorities Yes they do actually#harry is fruity as hell idc what that incorrect subtitle of scarfy in avps says#(no seriously the subtitle is wrong he says METROSEXUAL i’ll die on this hill)#that man L O V E S zac efron#in fact basically all the men do#starkid#team starkid#avpm#avps#avpsy#avpt#avp trilogy#a very potter musical#a very potter sequel#a very potter senior year#a very potter trilogy#also seamus & dean are canonically polyamorous????#if 'being open to the idea of both dating ginny at the same time' counts#in which case. draco is also canonically polyamorous
