Thats right! after tepid interest in giving me money I've finally bit the bullet and opened a place to buy my birds to put on your wall.

Some days, I have to sit back and appreciate just how crazy, weird, and magical my life can be sometimes.
Two years ago, I had a random chance encounter with a falconer who was out hunting with his red tailed hawk. It was such an incredible sight so I of course walked over, introduced myself, and began chatting with him. We stayed in contact, and this last weekend, he invited me to the local falconer's club meet and greet, where we spent the afternoon trampling through a grassy field hunting for rabbits!
It was such an incredible experience I cannot even put into words. Having hawks fly right over your head as they're diving into the grass never gets old and is such a thrill every time. We caught a few rabbits, too! But the birds seemed more interested in the voles, much to the falconers' chagrin! It was pretty funny watching the hawks hork down a vole in one gulp while their flier watched on, sighing with resignation.
But the absolute best part of the day was when one falconer brought out his team of three Harris hawks. He handed me a glove, and all I had to do was hold up my hand and the hawk flew right to me, using me as a very handy perch as we were trudging through the fields! It was a true Disney princess moment and one I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Now someone tie me to a pole so I don't do something stupid like actually go out and get a hawk for myself.

HUNTING WITH MY HARRIS'S HAWK, ARAMIS
Tumblr media
I pick Aramis up from his mews then weigh him and prepare things (food, telemetry, lure, etc.) before heading out. The field we're going to today is within walking distance.
We get to the field bright and early, Aramis is following me along the tree line and into the woods. Down here, my role is to flush out game for him.

Today, Aramis caught a partridge after a short airborne chase! I get to him as quickly as possible to humanely dispatch the prey (cervical dislocation). It's important to know how to do this to avoid drawn out distress and suffering of the animal. He's left to pluck and pick at the fresh carcass for a bit as a reward before trading off. He usually gets to eat his catches, split into a couple different meals.

Once we're back home, I place Aramis in his box to remove his transmitter then leave him a minute to put away my bag and its content before weighing him again. He wastes no time getting comfortable and is all puffed up and relaxed when I return!

I clean the blood from his talons then bring him outside. Aramis can start digesting this good meal as he enjoys the nice fall weather in the yard for a few hours.
