It's been rolling around in my brain the last few days for some reason, but I still hate the family backstory reveals for Sophie and Eliot. I've seen some of the meta for it, but quite frankly, it still makes no sense. If it had been something actually thought of and intentional in the original, I think it could have been so fascinating. I mean, Sophie's willing abandonment of Astrid to contrast with Nate's loss of Sam or Eliot's adoption in contrast with Hardison's and Parker's? Could have been excellent! But they came out of nowhere in Redemption and don't work with these characters.

Sophie was still actively using the fucking alias that she met Astrid under! She met with someone from her past on the show! Like. Quite frankly, that one is unequivocally bullshit that they made up and threw in and pretended could fit with the established canon. (And I'm sorry, but the idea of Sophie abandoning Astrid and never telling Nate about her just... So much of Nate's trauma was rooted in the loss of Sam, and I think that introducing this element after he's gone and unable to respond to it taints Sophie and Nate's relationship in a way bc I'm not exactly sure how Nate would've responded to learning about this but I think that it's something he'd have needed to know. I don't know how to fully express my thoughts on that but yeah.)

As for Eliot, I don't like the adoption aspect literally at all. The way that he would interact with his family and the memory of his family would be different, and I think that it's flat out ridiculous to think that he'd have never mentioned it to the team in the original show, especially when dealing with the kid cases. (I also dislike the biracial adoption as its own element because if Eliot was actually raised by Black parents in the... idk what 80s/90s? That just. doesn't feel congruent with how they write Eliot interacting with PoC, not necessarily in a bad way, but babe, he's written like a white southern man raised in a specific kind of culture that does not jell with that. It also makes Eliot look... really bad that he was apparently raised with the knowledge of how fucked up the military was and his parents' history and made the choices that he did.) Like the show may not have explicitly stated it but the implication of that relationship was vastly fucking different throughout the original show.

Just. These were not backstories that were congruent with their depiction and characters in the original show, and they're also just moves that I don't particularly like or find interesting directions for those characters. There's also something to be said about how it was apparently unacceptable for a woman to not have kids or someone not reconciling with their biological family when that was something that the original show handled a lot better. Out of all the directions to take Sophie and Eliot's stories, that's just not really one that I think was a good idea.

Sanemi never loved her, and it was uncertain if he even had a slight crush or not when he was a teenager, for countless reasons, he's a complex character and assuming that Kanae had any concrete importance on him is factually incorrect. the only relevance she had was that she reminded him of how much he missed his mom, and how much he's different from her as an older sibling...they could've been friends at best, but they didn't even know each other well enough to be actually considered such though,,, saying this as a platonic SaneKana enjoyer bc I think their friendship would be a found family trope that I find accurate and cute

and don't let me start on the fact that Kanae never even remotely liked him "that way", she's nice to everyone and he wasn't an exception, she was worried about him because he acted kinda insane ever since she got introduced to him lmao😭😭 plus it makes my blood boil whenever we water down a female character to a mere love interest even when she's not.. "oh HE liked her so they're canon" ??? that's not how it works, she was created and written only for her sisters, not for any man. Fusion requires a deep connection and a strong bond to work.

D) Wally and Bart have such a strong bond that they can speak to each other through the speedforce and sense each other's emotions from anywhere in the world.

Conclusion:

I always thought of it as people drawing her in her mid thirties. I'm still working on reading the Odyssey itself, but when I watch the premier/live-stream with my parents, my mom made an interesting point. She said that if Penelope and Odysseus got married at 16, then twenty years would mean she's 36. Still plenty old enough to have kids/young enough to not have experienced menopause.

The suitors do want the crown and power, yes. But what stopping Telemachus from taking the throne? (/rhetorical, not part of the point I'm making) They're after Penelope, who's pretty smart and still (kinda) young. Young enough to give them sons.

For context, in ORAS Tabitha said that he has recently turned 27. I've always seen Maxie and Archie the oldest of their respective trio. And like yeah, they would still be like 30 or something, but my brain is just catching up to the potential ( key word potential) that these guys are just some dudes in their late 20's and not like. In their 30's or so. Like they would be younger Birch( he's 35) and only a few years older than Steven ( and Cyrus!). Also I'm realizing that Tabitha is I think younger? Asher: The shit you pull on that mountain, you’re insane, you know that. Phoenix: [smiles] Thank you. Asher: I bet you could make snowboarding videos, probably make more than you do now, and I bet you’d enjoy it more than politics.

Phoenix: It would be more fun, sure, but I don’t know if it would be fulfilling. I wouldn’t be doing anything to make the world better. Asher: Are you now? Phoenix: [laughs] Fuck you. Asher: [shrugs] It’s a simple question.

Phoenix: I’m trying. To be honest, it seems the more power I have, the less power I have. I just keep running into more roadblocks, and the mayor vetoed our last two fair housing proposals, which makes no sense. It’s like I can’t get anywhere. But I have to keep trying. It’s important to me, by the time Annie is out in the world on her own, I don’t just want her to be ready, I want the world to be a little better for her.

When I met Dawn, I could see myself raising a family with her, but it wasn’t until… when we lost our first, that’s when it really hit me. When I went from, “yeah I can see us having kids” to “I can’t imagine our life without them”. Asher: Right. I remember that. I’m sorry.

Phoenix: It’s okay. Why do you ask? Asher: I’ve always been pretty neutral on the whole thing. Like, it would be cool to have little kids running around, raising a family together y’know. But it would also be cool to have the freedom to just live our lives and follow our dreams and travel the world too. So, I was never bothered that Atlas didn’t plan on having any. Phoenix: And that’s changed?

Asher: [nods] Our last night in Selvadorada, I had this dream…

I was just sitting in a dark room. It was so dark I could barely see my hand in front of my face. And it was terrifying. I wanted to get up and find my way out, but I couldn’t move.

And then this little boy walks in, couldn’t have been more than ten years old, if that.

He sat next to me, wiggled his way under my arm and rested his head against my chest, and just like that, I wasn’t afraid anymore. I wanted to ask him who he was, where we were, but I couldn’t speak. So, we just sat like that in silence for a while.

And then he sat up like he heard something, and when he looked back at me… he looked at me with these big dark blue eyes, almost teal y’know, eyes I’d know anywhere, and I imagine you would too… and he said, “It’s going to be okay.”

He started to get up, but then turned and wrapped his arms around me in the tightest hug. I was so shocked; I didn’t know what to do.

Before I could hug him back, he stood and ran off. And, when he disappeared around the corner, it felt like he took a piece of me with him.

Asher: It was our son; I know it was. And look, I’m not trying to compare any of this to what you went through. I know it’s not the same; I can’t even imagine. But I don’t know who else to talk to that could possibly understand the feeling I woke up with. It was like he was ripped away from me. I haven’t felt right since. And I don’t think I will until he exists.

Phoenix: Ash, you know I’m not the one you should be talking to about this. Asher: I know. I’ll talk to Atlas soon, I promise, but I feel like I need to prepare myself for the possibility that he’ll say no. Phoenix: Okay. Worst case scenario then: What will it mean for you if he does? Asher: The end of everything. It will mean I have to swallow these feelings, and hope they go away, until they inevitably tear us apart. That boy, he doesn’t exist without Atlas. If I lose him, I lose them both. I lose everything.

Phoenix: That’s a pretty intense worst-case scenario. Asher: [shrugs] Yeah, well… Phoenix: Let me ask you something, and if it’s none of my business, then tell me so. But when you two talked about having kids before, did you get the sense that he doesn’t want to be a father? Or was he just afraid he wouldn’t be a good one? Asher: The latter, I think. He was worried about making his kids feel unwanted, the way he felt growing up.

Phoenix: I suspected as much. Dawn and Atlas, they had it pretty rough, and neither of them escaped unscathed. But I think you know as well as I do how strong they both are, how far they’ve come. It’s probably worth checking in to see how Atlas is feeling now. Not to mention, the way he is with his nieces, I would be shocked if there wasn’t a part of him that wanted the same things you do. But even if he is still feeling apprehensive, don’t you think he’d be willing to face those fears if he knew how important it was to you?

Asher: Yeah. You’re right, he would. Phoenix: Exactly. So, stop fucking torturing yourself and just talk to him. Asher: Thank you. Phoenix: Anytime. I’m heading back up, are you coming? Asher: Right behind you.

i actually do kinda like delivering groceries on the side because it gives me such a unique cross-section of the community. i never know whose groceries im shopping for until i finish the delivery and see them/their home and it's like it adds more detail to the picture of who they are. the baby supplies going to the apartment that i know for a fact is one bedroom (they'll be moving soon - i bet they're apartment hunting, i hope they find a place). the new cat litter box, bowl, and kitten food going to the house covered in "i <3 my dog" paraphernalia (a kitten definitely showed up on the porch recently and made itself at home). the fairly healthy boring grocery order that includes an incongruous tub of candy-filled ice cream going to the home of an elderly woman with toddler toys in the yard (it's clearly for her grandkids, whom she sees often).

shopping for someone else's groceries is a fairly intimate thing. i've bought condoms and pregnancy tests, allergy medicine and nyquil, baby benadryl and teething gel, a huge pile of veggies paired with an equally huge pile of junk food, tampons and shampoo and closet organizers and ant traps and deodorizing shoe inserts and a million other little things that tell a million different stories in their endless combinations. one time someone had me buy one single green bean. i messaged them to confirm that's actually what they wanted, and they said yes - neither of them liked green beans very much, but they had a baby they were introducing to solid foods, and they wanted to let him try one to see if he liked them. another time i had someone request 50 fresh roma tomatoes - not for a restaurant, but for a person in an apartment. the kitchen behind them smelled like basil and garlic when they opened the door. another time i brought groceries to three elderly blind women who share a house. that was one of the few times i have ever broken my rule and gone inside a place i've delivered to, because they asked if i could place the grocery bags in a specific location in the kitchen for them to work on unloading and there was no way i was going to refuse helping.

i gripe about the poor tippers, but people can also be incredibly kind. one time i took shelter from a sudden vicious hailstorm inside an older lady's home in a trailer park, while i was in the middle of delivering her groceries. we both huddled just inside the door, watching in shock as golf-ball-sized hail swept through for about five minutes and then disappeared. she handed me an extra $10 bill on my way out the door.

when covid was at its deadliest, people would leave extra (often lysol-scented) cash tips and thank-you notes for me taped to the door or partially under the mat. i especially loved the clearly kid-drawn thank you notes with marker renderings of blobby people in masks, or trees, or rainbows. in summer of 2020 i delivered to a nice older couple who lived outside of town in the hills, and they insisted i take a huge double handful of extra disposable gloves and masks to wear while shopping - those were hard to find in stores at the time, but they wanted me to have some of their supply and wouldn't take no for an answer.

anyway. all this to say people are mostly good, or at least trying to be, despite my complaints.
